Pokemon Dynamorph AU Masterpost
Based on THIS POST
The short of this AU is that the climax of the Eternatus fight had an even more profound effect on the Galar region and its people. The excess energy made people fuse with their pokemon! Oh boy! So below the cut I’m going to outline all the ideas behind this AU thanks to everyone’s asks showing an increasing curiosity about all this! I’m used to writing original content, nothing based on an existing property so bare with me…
Tumblr media
Events Leading Up to The Dynamorph Event
So for this AU, the events of the game leading up to the Eternatus conflict are the SAME except for some details.
Gloria/Victor and Hop never encounter Zacian or Zamazenta. The Rusty Sword and Shield were lost to time.
When Leon goes to confront Eternatus, he is joined by everyone up on the roof. The Gloria/ Victor, Hop, Bede, Marnie, the Gym Leaders (minus Opal because she’s back in Ballonlea enjoying retirement.)
This confrontation happens AFTER Gloria/ Victor beats Leon, for simplicity’s sake.
So when everyone confronts Eternatus, thanks to Rose’s eager impatience to do good for the Galar region, they are unable to stop it properly since Zacian and Zamazenta are nowhere to be found. Instead, the combined efforts of everyone force Eternatus to flee.
But not without releasing an overwhelming blast of Dynamax energy.
The blast rippled throughout a portion of Galar, and had a chain reaction with power spots and the dens of the Wild Area. When the dust settled, the pokemon everyone had out that they were using in the big fight were...gone. Not in their pokeball, just..gone. Naturally, people assume the worst but they have a lingering feeling that the Pokemon are still...here somehow. But they don’t know why. So when everyone’s calmed down, and clean up begins, they all go their separate ways.
About a day passes, and then it starts to happen. From the time of the blast and when the changes start to happen externally, everyone experiences some oddities superficially (better hearing, acute sensitivity to stuff etc.)
Leon was in his newly acquired office and the just obtained Battle Tower. He had the blind closed, sat in the darkened room thinking over everything that happened, and his loss of the Champion title. When the changes started happening, he nearly burned the office, leaving claw marks in his desk, the floor, and the walls. The noise attracted someone from the Battle Tower staff and he yelled at them in panic to call Sonia. His own phone started ringing. It was Hop.
Gloria/ Victor (I separate them cuz it's more of a ‘who you imagine in this role.’ Can only have one Champion) were being briefed on Champion duties and what that entails. It’s a boring meeting, but they excuse themself to go to the bathroom. In reality they duck away outside to just get a breather. They suddenly feel a sharp pain and start to change, probably biting into their arm to muffle any scream to prevent causing a scene.
Bede headed back to Ballonlea, distraught that Hatterine was nowhere to be found. He wanted to distract himself by continuing his gym leader training, but Opal sat him down for some tea to talk about grief and loss. She’s way older and definitely has experience in that field. What she doesn’t have experience in, is what to do when your protege starts growing traits of a pokemon…
Hop, after that whole ordeal, missing Dubwool, and having lost the gym challenge just had so many feelings to vent out, he wanted to just scream. So he heads deep into the Slumbering Weald to just scream out his frustrations. When he sits down after tiring himself out, his changes start happening. In pain, scared, and alone, he calls Leon.
Marnie went back to Spikemuth with Piers. Team Yell welcomed them with open arms and gave them the idea to have a tribute concert for the pokemon they believe they lost. Marnie declined, electing to stay at home and be alone for a while. She didn’t want to be around people right now. Then her changes started happening, and she uncontrollably let out a burst of electricity, causing an outage in Spikemuth.
Piers, meanwhile, was setting up for an impromptu concert. He dealt with his feelings by doing literally anything to distract him from them so yelling into a microphone for a couple hours seemed like a good idea. Just as he was about to test the mic, a huge power surge came from his place and shut down all of Spikemuth’s power. Concerned for his sister he runs off stage, taking alleys as a shortcut. In his adrenaline he doesn’t even realize his changes started until he tripped over his own new claws and writhes just outside their place.
Raihan, being in Hammerlocke, wastes no time in helping with the clean up. While at the highest point in the city, he and his gym trainers were hard at work. Until Raihan collapsed, trying to hold himself up with his broom. His trainers looked on in concern and horror as he began changing, even starting up a sandstorm in the process. As a result, one trainer almost gets pushed off the roof but, bearing through the pain, Raihan leaps in and grabs them in time.
Gordie and Melony head back to Circhester. On the way, they had talked a lot about their issues and gripes that had torn a rift in their family, in earnest. The assumed loss of their pokemon worked as good common ground to remind them about the importance of family. They were both at Melony’s home when it happened. The heat and cold put a completely new kind of barrier between the two.
Bea wanted to get her mind off everything that happened by training in the outskirts of Stow-on-Side. She pushed herself too far, and her pokemon urged her to stop. But she fought them off. At first with difficulty, but then as her changes happened, more easily. Her pokemon backed off and started looking for help.
Alister, figuring that his Gengar maybe wandered off on its own again, headed to the graveyard during the night. One of Gengar’s favourite spots. For a moment, Alister thought he heard Gengar’s chuckle and it’s cry but turned to see nothing. Something compelled him to look down at himself and he could see himself becoming translucent and a suspicious shade of purple. He had always had an affinity with ghosts but becoming one was something else entirely. Ensue panic attack.
Kabu returned home to quietly meditate and think rationally about everything that happened. In a trance-like state, he could feel Centiskorch right there next to him. He felt at peace. The smell of burning snapped him out of it, however when he realized he, as well as a good part of the room, was on fire. He quickly escaped, realizing the fire didn’t hurt him.
Nessa just wanted to be alone, so back at Hulberry, she walked along the docks, shrouded in early morning fog. Her changes started happening, but she really only felt itchy as the scales came in. Upon checking her phone, did she herself in the screen’s reflection and freak out.
Life moves on and Milo had a farm to tend to. His family urged him to take a break but he smiled back at them and assured them he was okay. He wasn’t. While working was when his changes happened. His whole family rushed to his aid. And again, through a smile, he insisted he was okay.
Oleana was working feverishly on getting money together for lawyers and bail money to get Rose out of his self-imposed jail sentence. She knew all he wanted was good for the region, but he was just too blind to see the potential damage he was causing. She wanted him to have a second chance. But her changes slowed her down.
Rose, in a cell, reflected on his actions. How rash he was that he didn’t see the big picture. He should’ve listened. When his changes happened in his cell, he was horrified. Not at what happened to him, but what was no doubt, happening to the others. And probably more. What had he done? He needed to fix his mistake.
The ones present at the event were not the only ones to change, however. This was happening all over the region, closer to power spots (which includes the towns, but the morphs aren’t all as drastic) and the wild area (trainers fused with wild pokemon and went hostile. This is covered in depth in another section). After one of the quickest trials, Rose had offered to the court that instead of a full prison sentence, he spent his entire resources and wealth into funding on solving this new, now coined ‘Dynamorph Crisis.’ They agreed and the Macro Cosmos got to work.
How the Dynamorph Actually Works
Bare with me because this is where I kind of bend canon and make assumptions about things for the sake of explaining how this AU even works. So. Eternatus caused all this by basically converting things into energy. On humans, it would just tear them apart. On pokemon it would just turn them into dynamax energy temporarily. The normal situation is that dynamaxing makes the pokemon grow and change form, yeah? Well for this AU, the pokemon, seeing that their trainers are potentially going to die, decide to fuse with them to ‘fill in the gaps.’ Saving them. At first, it appears like they were able to change into the parts missing, but after a while, the pokemon traits start showing, which is my excuse for why the actual changes were delayed.
The severity of the dynamorph is dependent on proximity to the blast/ powerspot. And just personal preference if you wanted to make your own trainersona dynamorphed (which I totally encourage! It’s fun and I like seeing what you all come up with!!).
Dynamorphed trainers gain the physical traits, special abilities, movesets and odd quirks that come with the pokemon they are dynamorphed with. (Bonding with Morpeko makes you hungry, bonding with a Xatu lets you see the future, etc) Though, since the humanity is still there, they are able to curb some of the more aggressive quirks with diligence.
If the pokemon bonded is not fully evolved, applying the correct evolutionary method will evolve and change the outward appearance of the dynamorphed trainer. Normal level up are accomplished by fighting, not by age.
Since being part pokemon, the trainer is a lot more resilient and could, if they REALLY wanted to, fight other morphed trainers. Trainers feel the type weakness and resistances. They would faint just like a pokemon fight. Potions and pokemon centres would help them recover. Though death is still something that can happen.
Trainers fused with food-like pokemon are not edible please don't eat them, there's a place where the food stops and the flesh starts and we don’t need to find out where that is ok??
Normal pokemon that are caught and trained will REFUSE to attack a dynamorphed trainer unless absolutely provoked. So you can’t really have a pokemon battle where a dynamoprhed trainer is beating up a pokemon or vice versa. That’s messed up.
Dynamorphed trainers cannot be caught in any kind of pokeballs. That’s also messed up.
They cannot breed to make a weird hybrid plz stop asking.
Dynamorphed Trainers can NOT be Dynamaxed. Too much energy, man.
Trainers CAN bond with more than one pokemon, but that's where complications start to occur. The more pokemon bonded to the trainer, the harder it is form them to hold on to their humanity.
1 Pokemon = Okay
2 Pokemon = A struggle to keep humanity, but it’s possible.
3+ Pokemon = This is not a person. It is a hostile beast.
There are no legendary pokemon/ ultra beasts dynamorphed. They’re all in other regions and wouldn’t be in the Galar region when it happened so there just wouldn’t be. But if ya’ll make one with one anyway, I won’t stop you but the legendary pokemon may be too strong for a trainer to handle.
If the pokemon’s nature is different than the trainer’s than it might affect their personality. The extent of this is varied.
**No two dynamorphs look the same! If you have two trainers bonded with like...a Pikachu for example. One might get yellow fur, ears, and a tail while the other only gets a tail and the cheeks. Go nuts.
If the pokemon dynamorphed with the trainer is the opposite gender, the result is whatever you want.
Speaking of complications, that brings us to the next part…
The Wild Area Trainers
During this whole event, I previously mentioned that the Wild Area was significantly affected. Those unfortunate enough to be out camping during the blast had the chance of 1 of 3 things happening:
They dynamorphed with one of their pokemon.
They dynamorphed with with more than one of their pokemon
They dynamorphed with one or more wild pokemon Examples found HERE.
In the case of being bonded to a wild pokemon, this takes a heavy toll on the trainer’s mind as its constantly fighting with a wild pokemon. This causes them to lose their minds and become hostile, just like a wild pokemon. Unfortunately a large number of “Wild Trainers” roam the Wild Area. Their previously caught pokemon usually try to flee or stick around to protect their trainer out of sheer devotion. As mentioned before, they cannot be caught with a pokeball. But the region is working on a program to deal with this. …
How the Galar Region is dealing with the Dynamorph Crisis
Professors Sonia and Magnolia are appointed the top researchers, being granted the resources of the Macro Cosmos thanks to Oleana and Rose, wanting to atone for his mistakes. However the government, doubting Rose’s competence, sends out their own officials to oversee and make decisions. (I have no idea how the government of this region works. Is there a parliament? Is the gym league the authority? I’ll say for this AU there is actually a system of government…).
They have labs and rehabilitation centres set up to be able to study and help help dynamorphed trainers cope and eventually go back home. They are not kept there against their will. Most, anyway. The main cast were quarantined in a lab/ facility for the early stages of the crisis so they could learn/ test their capabilities in a safe environment. Shenanigans ensue. Because of this, the crisis put a hold on the gym challenge league entirely.
At first, the authorities wanted to keep this under wraps in case their morphs were an isolated incident but quickly realized that was going to be impossible. Travel to and from the Galar region became incredibly restricted. Dynamorphed trainers are not allowed to leave the region, for everyone’s safety (don’t want to risk an outburst that could harm anyone :c ), but unchanged people were free to travel once they were confirmed as ‘human’ by a mandatory test.
The Wild Area became a huge problem, what with Wild Trainers running about. Defenses were set up just in case to prevent Wild Trainers from wandering into populated areas and causing havoc, though a few occurrences still happen, what with flying pokemon and all. Eventually, a special force was assembled that consisted of consenting dynamorphed trainers that were tasked with going into the Wild Area and subduing and retrieving Wild Trainers to bring them to a more secured location to help study them and to try and find a cure. And to confirm to families the fate of their missing family member(s). The attempt is to be as humane as possible.
The special force (Do I really wanna call it Dynaforce? I feel like I’m abusing the prefix if I do), consists of all the current gym leaders, Piers, Leon, Victor/ Gloria and a bunch of other trainers who signed up who are 18+. (you don't want to send kids out doing this kind of dangerous work, I know pokemon is all about children taming powerful animals but you gotta draw the line in the sand somewhere. Gym leaders are exempt because they why not. They insisted and already proved their strength to the region. It’s an AU based off a fuckin game/ anime.) This force has two jobs:
Go into the Wild Area to subdue Wild Trainers and bring them home
Protect the towns in case any wild trainers get in.
So what happened to Eternatus if it just escaped? Theories indicate it might be living in a massive den in the heart of the Wild Area, waiting to strike again. There are a lot more Wild Trainers near this area, so excursions here are difficult.
Is a cure eventually found? Honestly this is just an AU so that's up to you. My personal answer is no. Improvise. Adapt. Overcome. //Bear Grylls voice
So….this is a lot. This is just some silly AU that inspired me to expand on it for fun since you guys showed a lot of interest! I’ll edit this as I get more asks about things I may have missed, but I will be going in and deleting a lot of previous asks so I can clean up my blog a bit. I had WANTED to keep a lot of this ‘secret’ cuz I wanted to draw stuff for it. I STILL WILL DRAW for it, but realistically I don’t have the time or energy ahah. Especially for an AU of a published franchise aha.
If you want to make a dynamorph trainersona, totally go for it! Just tag me when its done! I love seeing what people do!

How do you think the gym leaders and Hop would feel if they find out Leon passed out due to being overworked by Rose?
Leon is getting ready to go out for an event or smth, and he’s in the locker room with the other guys (there’s a separate one for guys and for girls, and since it’s a sport and they have uniforms, ofc they have a locker room). He kind of just collapses on the hard tile floor, out cold. The other guys wake him up in a panic and he just says he’s been working too hard. He’s had a lot of events and they know Rose hasn’t given him any time to rest. The event gets cancelled and the guys tell the women of the league what happened.
Milo is worried. He stays away from Leon because a week of nothing but rest is what he needs. He does send some fresh produce though since healthy food will help him recover. He also sends a note that says “Feel better soon! Call me if you need anything! :)”
Nessa is angry. Leon is too nice to be treated like a work Mudsdale. She confronts Rose and demands that Leon gets some time off. Rose tries to argue, but Nessa just shuts him down over and over until he relents. Her and the other gym leaders that came to yell at him leave. Then she calls Leon and tells him to take some time off.
Kabu is concerned. He visits Leon very briefly to make sure he’s okay and tells him he’s going to take a few days off. Then he goes with Nessa to yell at Rose. He then recommends that Rose do some work for himself instead of passing it all off to Oleana. So basically he roasts tf outta Rose until he gives Leon time off.
Bea is angry at Rose too. She goes with Nessa and Kabu to yell at Rose. Shee lectures Rose on how Leon is a person, not a tool for him to use. Then she makes her way over to Leon’s to see if there is anything he needs. Probably not, but she tells him to relax and not to worry about Rose. They took care of it.
Allister stays with Leon for a few hours, just to make sure Leon doesn’t try to get up and work any more. He does stuff for Leon so he doesn’t even hove to get off the sofa. He’s kind of worried because he knows Bea and some other gym leaders are going to yell at Rose. He doesn’t tell Leon.
Opal also goes to yell at Rose. Well, she goes to watch the others yell at him and give him a disapproving glare. That’s probably the worst part for Rose. Opal just has a presence. Then she goes to Leon and is all sweet and loving. She takes care of Leon for a little bit.
Gordie hangs with Leon for a while to make sure he’s not sick or hurt from falling (the floor of the locker room was pretty hard after all). He comforts Leon because he’s pretty upset about the whole thing. He makes sure Leon sits down and does not get up, since he’s bound to try. He’s also texting Piers to see how it’s going with Rose.
Melony also stays with Leon. She’s afraid he’s hurt or sick, so she takes care of him closely. She makes sure Leon has nothing to stress about while he rests and recovers. He is left alone mostly, but Melony is usually around making sure he’s taken care of and actually getting the rest he needs.
Piers went to yell at Rose. He got his own turn lecturing, but it ended up being more screaming about how he could be so careless. He then goes to visit Leon over the course of his break. He makes sure he’s taken care of, and he talks him out of his fear of Rose. Leon’s stressed about how Rose will act when he gets back, and Piers makes sure he’s not worried about it.
Raihan didn’t go to yell at Rose, but he was definitely in touch with those that did go. Leon was panicking about the whole thing, so Raihan keeps him calm while the whole thing goes down. Therefore, when Raihan gets the call that Rose agrees to give Leon some time off, Raihan lets him know immediately. Raihan comes to visit and help Leon relax quite often.

Paradise AU ask: This is the separate ask for the rest of the Galarian Gym leaders. I guess I got to carried away with the last ask. lol srry :'3
No worries, Anon! Really, I'm the one who got carried away. Meant to summarize Leon's faction, but, well... You saw how that went. Allister and Gordie are assuming you’re playing the other one!
Again, a reminder that Paradise AU contains heavy themes! Please skip over this post if you're not okay with weapons, references to past slavery and implications of it, or anything else you see in the post. And if it does trigger you, please let me know so I can add it to a list of things to tag!
Milo is a farmer. His family's farm was just south of Hammerlocke, but as the Legion pushed north, he and his family crossed the border and moved up into Wyndon territory. His family is pretty much the only people who keep the city fed- which is something the player will address for Leon's faction. He is a temporary companion during a quest to fix the pipes for his irrigation system and is involved with a quest wherein you free a woman that's been passed from the Legion to the quote-unquote “red light district”. This serves as his personal quest, as the woman moves in with his family and helps on their farm. Gordie can encourage them to be romantic. (This woman is my friend's OC, they are okay with her being used in this way.)
Nessa was also from a settlement south of Hammerlocke, but rather than escaping when the Legion came through, she was captured. In order to free her and have her as a companion, the player has to purchase her from the slavemaster. However, playing as Allister, your companion has to be the one to make the transaction. Allister must stay out of sight of the slavemaster. She is ill-suited to battle, so while you can have her as a companion, it’s really suggested to just let her stay in Wyndon. Her personal quest involves getting her something from her home.
Kabu used to be part of a pseudo-military/science faction that’s been destroyed for two decades when the game takes place. He is the first companion available to Gordie. He is very skilled in combat but very secretive about his past. Bringing him with to Hoenn to encounter Teams Aqua and Magma, or to Sinnoh to encounter Team Galactic gets some unique dialogue with the team leaders. His personal quest involves collecting other former members of his faction to try to restore them and help the region.
Bea and Allister are traveling north together. They’re a random encounter on the road between Hammerlocke and Wyndon. Gordie can escort them to Wyndon and if he does, he hears about how their city was ransacked and burned, how their parents died to let them escape. Bea has become Allister’s guardian despite being so young.
Playing as Allister, Bea can be found just outside the smoldering ruins of her hometown. She asks him for help trying to save her parents and kill the Legion boys that have attacked the town. You’re too late to save her parents, but she can be recruited as a companion after completing this quest. Later, she acts as one of Allister’s few ways to increase his Innocence if it gets too low. They play I Spy while walking.
Opal can be recruited as a storyteller and a performer for Leon. She’ll take her role very seriously, even if it’s just to continue the education of the children and entertain them. She doesn’t talk about her own past, but during Kabu’s personal quest, you discover that she was also part of the faction. She doesn’t talk about it but agrees to join to help them remember their history and faults.
Bede is a member of Galar’s Rose. He’s one of the first members of the faction you encounter, and he is clearly young and inexperienced. He believes that Galar’s Rose is the best thing for the region, and serves as that faction’s supportive companion. Though once you get to his personal quest, he can no longer be a companion. How he continues really depends on your choices in his quest.
Melony is part of Sonia’s doctors, helping people with their injuries and diseases. She’s not the primary one searching for new medicines, but she is close to the person who is. She can be recruited as a companion for both Allister and Gordie. As Gordie, she is available from the get-go. You arrive, talk with Melony, and she’ll be your companion if you ask. As Allister, you have to bring Gordie to talk to her. She is one of the easiest companions of the game.
Gordie is a courier for the faction. He’s mostly seen running around picking up packages of medicine or materials for new medicine, books, or whatever else the faction needs. He is fairly knowledgeable about medicine but not as skilled with it as Melony. His personal quest can end with his death if the player chooses.
Piers is a sniper, used to be for Galar’s Rose. He left the faction after an incident that has to do with his personal quest (the one where you reunite him with Marnie). He’s bitter at the world and really only still kicking because nothing’s killed him yet. After his personal quest, he is much happier. He joined Galar’s Rose after the Legion attacked and destroyed his hometown.
Marnie’s past is secret. You never learn much about what happened to her before she was sold to the Legion. All you learn about her is what she had been doing while recovering. She spends most of her time in Wyndon Tower but is sometimes found walking around the city.
Raihan’s primary role is to introduce you to Leon’s faction. He also plays a possible role in the Johto DLC depending on the choices you made with him and another companion (OC). He is supposed to be the leader of the settlement inside Hammerlocke, but because of the area being contested, he’s little more than a wanderer.

Could you give me some angst with Milo, Piers and Gordie? I live and die for Milo angst aaah;;;
((I feel sorry for these gentlemen))
Milo
“Is that all you got to show for yourself?”
“You’d think he would give a challenge. Has he grown soft lately?”
“Nessa kicks more ass than he does. Not surprised though,”
The comments were relentless. You’d think that after a few years of being a Gym Leader, the comments that fans made wouldn’t mean as much. However, there are some weeds that just don’t disappear that easily. Milo knew that being a Gym Leader had its sore moments, especially considering the fact that he’s the first Gym Leader that challengers face during the tournament. And as the first Gym Leader, it’s prohibited that Milo doesn’t use any of his strongest Grass type Pokémon, due to him being the supposedly easy stepping stone challengers can defeat. There are times when the losses did not affect Milo much, because he is okay with losing. After all, isn’t being a Gym Leader suppose to be an opponent that can offer a challenger a chance to beat and earn a badge? Every Gym Leader knows this and some take their losses with humility, such as with Opal and Kabu, while other Gym Leaders can get frustrated, as for Nessa and Raihan. Milo took his defeats with humility and didn’t mind at all if he lost. Battling can be a good time, but for others, battling is seen as competitive.
Milo knew about the ugliness of battling and what it can do to die hard fans who have certain levels of expectations. They can look at Nessa and comment on how her battling technique shines far brighter in contrast to Milo’s, whose more subdued and prefers to show little. With Nessa, her fan base revels in how much she improves and strives forward, thus making her popular among many people. Though Milo does get praise from his fans, there are plenty who lurk in the shadows and are typing away on their phones, commenting on how Milo’s battling performance has gotten weaker. Due to that kind of attention, it has caused Milo to become very self-conscious on him being a Gym Leader. A few comments that get underneath his skin, they manage to rip a chunk of esteem, spatting it out with such ferocity and judgment that it has gotten to be....sickening.
“Why can’t Milo be better?”
This question has been tossed around a lot and, frankly, this question plagued Milo’s mind. He wished he could tell his fans why, but due to being in a circle of professionals, the answers are concealed in confidentiality. The Pokémon League has been aware of the activity that has been going on, which Milo wonders if they happen to monitor any of the activity going on with the other Gym Leaders. Still, this was Milo’s business, with which he tries to conduct himself as the gentle, friendly giant. It wasn’t a facade; that’s just who he is as a person, because being overly competitive like Raihan or Nessa just didn’t suit him. He couldn’t bring himself to look in a mirror and stare at his reflection, trying to mimic that confident, almost superior attitude that his friends have. Despite being able to put on a smile and walk out onto the pitch with ease, that nagging insecurity of being a pathetic excuse for a Gym Leader latches on to Milo, like a weed poisoning the flowers beauty.
Piers
Music has always been a part of Piers and who he is as an individual. Growing up, his father was a musician who used to go around the Galar region, putting on shows here and there during halftime during the Gym Challenge. Over time, his father retired from that profession and settled down with his life long sweetheart, which eventually leads to the here and now. Piers sticks to music like glue. Separating the singer from the microphone is a no go, which is why Piers insists on taking his portable mic everywhere with him. Hey, you never know if someone wants a concert. But, lately over time, the relationship between Piers and his music has been put on hold ever since he became Gym Leader. This was not his choice. When Piers first told his parents that he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps, his mother told him that by doing so, he wasn’t going to get anywhere in life. His father got lucky because he was able to get sponsored by people who saw musical talent in him, which is rare to come by in Galar since the region focuses more on battling than anything else. By announcing his dream in front of his parents at the tender age of ten, Piers felt himself being sucked down into a pit of roadblocks and detours. Taking part of the Gym Challenge was also not a choice that Piers made. Instead, his father knew someone who he was good friends with and had him sponsor Piers to take part. Regardless of his negative feelings of the entire thing, the Gym Challenge proved to be somewhat worthwhile and it even inspired Piers to use Dark types since he has a fascination with them.
However, over the course of his Gym Challenge and beyond, Piers began to feel burned out from the whole Gym Leader gig. The idea of repeating battles over and over and being forced to Dynamax your Pokémon at the tail end of a match started to lose its rhythm with Piers. Especially the Dynamaxing. As a kid, Piers took zero interest in the whole Dynamaxing appeal. He thought it looked cheap and something that made battling quite unbalanced given the extra power up. Given that Spikemuth was nowhere near a Power Spot, which was a mandatory requirement for every Gym in Galar, Piers was put into Circhester’s Gym for battling matches much to his dismay. After a few more matches that involved pointless Dynamaxing, Piers outright refused to Dynamax due to the disrespect of being able to battle in his own city because of a minor issue. Because of his announcement, it left Piers facing both criticism from the fans and some media outlets, who took Piers’ words as disrespectful to the Pokémon League as well as to the culture of the Galar region. Still, there were some Gym Leaders who were understanding towards this, such as Milo, Kabu, and Raihan.
After a few years of battling in his home city, Piers became a lot more cynical to battling and he found time to jot his feelings down into lyrics as upcoming songs for his concerts. This entire journey for Piers has been a back and forth ride where Piers wants to show how great Spikemuth is without Dynamaxing and him wanting to pursue his own passions of being a singer, the latter of which he wants to achieve. There are many factors that keep holding him back though, such as being a disappointment to his family if he decides to quit, being portrayed as selfish when all he wants to do is pursue his passions by the media and his fans, or just...fearing everything altogether. Luckily, Marnie helps console him and, to some extent, the grunts of Team Yell. Not a large music fan base, but they keep Piers from getting too discouraged.
If Piers can manage to break away from the battling environment altogether, then that would be a song worth singing.
Gordie
Gordie loves his mother, let’s just make that clear. Despite the arguments, there’s no bad blood between them. As the eldest child in the family, Gordie has a lot on his plate. For one thing, his siblings. Although they give him so much strife, he loves them. Gordie wouldn’t trade them for the world. Secondly, his relationship with Melony, his mother, has always been a positive one. I mean, this woman is part of his fan club for goodness sake! Still, with the positives, there are some negatives that have nearly tempted Gordie to cut ties with his family. Being a person who specializes in Rock types, Gordie never became interested in Ice type Pokémon. Sure, Snom looks adorable but Gordie finds Rolycoly to be even cuter! Melony has always known that Gordie likes Rock types, something of which she doesn’t understand but tries to. However, even when she tries to be a good mentor to Gordie, she doesn’t know a single thing about Rock types which causes her some frustration.
Gordie has dealt with his mother’s tough love before, especially considering he has faced her as a Gym Challenger before during his time in the Gym Challenge. Their match was something like a spectacle, but it proved difficult when Gordie tries to convince Melony that he can be a good Gym Leader without using Ice type Pokémon. Over the years, once Gordie became a certified Gym Leader, he would run the Circhester Gym alongside with his mother, which proved even more difficult. Both the mother and her son would not see eye to eye as much and everyone around the city took notice of this and would try to steer clear. One argument in particular has caused some emotional harm to both parties, more with Gordie whom once said that Ice types are useless in the heat of battle. This set off Melony, who returned his remark by saying if he didn’t spend so much time with his Rock type Pokémon, he would’ve saw something differently and be a better Gym Leader.
That argument set off a week long tension filled silence, with Gordie not speaking to his mother at all. At home, it got worse with Gordie moving out and staying at his apartment until things settled down. If until things settled down. At some point during the prolonged silent treatment did Gordie decide to call his mom to apologize. Even with the apology and the two making some progress to mend their relationship, Gordie knew that there would be no common ground between them aside from being related. The strain settled in and it frightens both of them that one day they might never see eye to eye again. It’s a fear that no parent and child should ever have to face.

Pokémon SWSH fiction ~world building~
How the Pokémon Sword & Shield world works inside my head:
Pre-game: Definitely open to writing some stories that take place pre-game! At ages 10 and 12 respectively, Leon and Sonia were gym challenge rivals; Nessa (11), Milo (14), Gordie (14), Raihan (11) and Piers (10) were also part of their challenge cohort, but their rivalry was well known to be the most fierce. Hop and Marnie would be 4 and 2 years old respectively when Leon becomes champion. Bede, living in a foster program due to being an orphan, was 6.
In game: Hop is 14, Marnie is 12, and Gloria and Victor are both 13. Bede is 16, though we all know he rocks the grandma vibe. I always pictured Marnie a little younger — she more than makes up for it in maturity, though. Additionally: Leon is 20, Sonia is 22, Raihan is 21, Nessa is 21, Milo is 24, Gordie is 24, and Piers is 21. Kabu is in his 50s and Opal is exactly 83, she will gladly and truthfully tell you, before scolding you for not offering an elderly lady a seat and refreshment (there’s a mischievous glint in her eye when she does this, though the poor target usually doesn’t see it).
Post game: Personally, my favorite. Five years later. Hop is 19, Gloria and Victor are both 18. Marnie is 17 and kicking ass as usual. Bede is 21. Leon is 25, moving on to his “real” career. Sonia is 27, Raihan and Nessa are 26, Milo and Gordie are 29 (neither is particularly concerned about the big 3-0, but you can bet Raihan will be when his time comes). And sweet Piers is 26.
Maybe I’m missing something, but some questions I’ve had to find answers to include: If you can technically set out to become a trainer and join the gym challenge at age 10, what kept Hop from doing that, as keen as he is? Why did Leon act like he had never met Gloria/Victor before when he met them at the train station? Why was he so hesitant to endorse the kids for the gym challenge? Do these kids have school of some kind to go to?
My answers: I think Leon was a Pokémon prodigy who left to join the gym challenge the first chance he was able, cheered on by family and friends. If Leon joined the challenge at 10 and became champion at that age, that would only add to his notoriety. But I think it would be difficult for Leon and Hop’s mum to agree to send off her second son quite the same way, after seeing her first gain celebrity and then rarely come back home. Hop’s mum (who I call Moira) forbade Hop from joining the gym challenge until he was a little older, and made Leon promise not to give Hop an endorsement until they agreed he was old enough. And as far as Gloria/Victor are concerned, their mom, who I’ll call Emma, is a florist — she’s not steeped in the Pokémon training world, so naturally her kids aren’t going to be out the door at age 10. They recently moved to the area, which is why Leon had never met them before the day he gives Hop and the player their starter Pokémon.
I like this approach because of how Hop’s mom holding him back from the gym challenge for a few years speaks to a slightly better parental relationship than most fics grant him. I still fully subscribe to the narrative that Leon gets most of the attention and that Hop feels overshadowed and insignificant compared to his big brother — but his parents certainly love him and try to look out for his well-being. He might not always see it that way, though. However, in my mind’s eye, Hop ends up appreciating the delay and the extra time for traditional schooling it provides him when he pursues higher education on his way to becoming a Pokémon professor.
Now, importantly: SHIPS. Because that’s what you probably came here for, hmm?
I am personally a Hop x Gloria, Raihan x Nessa, and Leon x Sonia shipper so I will definitely be interested in writing those stories! Since I don’t have strong feelings on anyone else I’m down to write whatever people may request. (Rules in a separate post.) AND I’m also down to write any of my aforementioned ship characters in a different ship scenario! Just be warned that those are the ones I like the most so you’ll likely see them the most.
Ok that’s enough! If you’re in the market for any SWSH stories with this kind of setup, please do ask! Zero charge, and I’ll write until I feel like the requested scenario is done justice.

I’m curious as to how other gym leaders reacted to piers becoming a gym leader, especially ones like Kabu and Opal who could probably see how he was struggling more before that. Do you have any other gym leader hcs?
Great question, anon. Before we get into it, we have to cover a few quick things.
Timeline of Piers’ life:
Went on Gym Challenge (Age 12, still lived with abusive parents, Marnie was not born yet) –> Marnie is Born (Age 13, Parents are still around, and still abusive, but only to Piers) –> Parents Left (Age 15, Marnie is Age 2) –> Became Gym Leader (Age 18, Marnie Age 5, Morpeko is given to her shortly after)
Piers’ family wasn’t very wealthy, but they had a house and enough food for one meal a day. I’ve been skirting around it for a while, but Piers’ parents were really shitty. They spent most of their cash on drugs and alcohol, and were verbally, emotionally and sometimes physically abusive. They manipulated Piers almost every day. They were not cruel in any way to Marnie when she was born, but they were still addicts. They were neglectful to her. I know these things can be kind of touchy, so I will add a tw in the tags. I always say this when I have smth like this, but if there’s an additional tag that you need me to add, please let me know and I will be happy to do it for you.
Not all of the gym leaders that are gym leaders in the game were gym leaders when he became one. The gym leaders that are still around in the game and were there when Piers joined their ranks were Milo (Who Was Pretty New), Nessa (Also Very New), Kabu (Who Had Been a Gym Leader for a While), Melony (Had Been a Gym Leader for a while), Opal (Had Been A Gym Leader for a Very Long Time), and Raihan (New). Leon had been Champion for some time now, and was also part of the group that Raihan and Piers had been in when they went on the gym challenge, though he was probably the youngest there, as he was 10 and most other kids were 12.
OKAY, now we can get into the actual headcanons.
Milo:
-He was a new gym leader when Piers joined the ranks.
-Milo was part of Piers’ group in the gym challenge, but they didn’t interact much.
-When Piers became gym leader, there were a lot of rumors about him being a bad person (bc he’s a dark type user) that Milo believed so he avoided Piers for a while.
-However, when someone becomes a gym leader, the others are supposed to visit and get to know them. This is when Milo really met Piers and learned about his situation with Marnie (vaguely, Piers doesn’t pour his life story out for anyone). And he changed his mind.
-They get along alright. They don’t hang out much, but they’re friendly towards eachother.
-Bonus headcanon: Milo is the tallest person in his family. He and his younger brother get along very well and are quite close.
Nessa:
-Like Milo, Nessa was new when Piers joined.
-She did not partake in the gym challenge, so she never saw Piers battle before. She was a bit skeptical since he always looked “dead” to her.
-When he became a gym leader, she was the first to march over to Spikemuth and welcome him to the team. She learned about Marnie and Piers’ situation (again vaguely) and was absolutely smitten. She thought it was so sweet that Piers was taking care of her and she absolutely loves little kids. She thinks Marnie is just the cutest.
-They get along well, and bc crazy shit always seems to happen at his concert, Piers will call Nessa just so she can get her drama fix.
-Bonus headcanon: She’s got an insane appetite. She can eat for like hours and still be hungry (and skinny cause she’s also got a crackhead metabolism). She’s scared away more than one date with this.
Kabu:
-Kabu’s not great at reading people, but when Piers came to challenge him, he could tell he was stressed and upset. He figured it was nerves, so he gave Piers the same advice he always does “You can challenge me as many times as you’d like.” Piers beat him in the first try (w/o dynamax so yeah he doesn’t need help with battles Kabu)
-Years later, Piers became the gym leader and Kabu came to congratulate him. Learned about Marnie and was all “oh is this what you seemed upset about? People are usually unhappy about being separated from family during the challenge” and Piers was like “um no she wasnt even born yet” so Piers ended up telling Kabu about his parents.
-Kabu tries to be supportive of Piers and help him feel better about his parents and past abuse (but Piers is already doing better bc he has Marnie). Piers appreciates it, but Kabu and Piers aren’t very close.
-They get along pretty well because Kabu really respects Piers’ strength both in battles and emotionally.
-Bonus headcanon: Opal thinks he’s a fool who focuses too much on pokemon battles to even notice anything else around him. She is correct. Sometimes he gets so involved in training he doesn’t notice his pokemon accidentally set his clothes on fire.
Melony:
-By the time Piers made it to Melony’s gym, he was tired, upset, frustrated. His parents had berated him for not dynamaxing, but he wanted to stay true to Spikemuth. He ended up telling Melony this after their battle. She comforted him and stayed with him until he was ready to move on from Circhester.
-Not long after Piers’ parents vanished, they got back in touch. Piers needed her help with Marnie and she practically adopted them. She brought them groceries, invited them to dinner and holidays. Really, she saved Piers more times than he cares to count.
-She was so thrilled to hear Piers was a gym leader. She always knew he was a talented trainer and was sad when he decided he didn’t want to do battles anymore. She’s glad he’s able to do both training and music at the same times, bc he loves them both and is good at them.
-They get along fantastically and see each other on a regular basis just bc they’re practically family. Piers gets along well with Gordie bc of this, but now that they’re fighting, Piers comes around less. He doesn’t like to hear people getting angry and doesn’t want to have to pick a side.
-Bonus Headcanon: Absolutely the best hugger. She always wears fluffy clothes, she’s pretty tall and somewhat stout so she’s pretty soft herself. Everyone loves Melony. There’s not a single person alive who can say they genuinely hate her.
Opal:
-Opal may be a fairy type trainer but she’s like a PSYCHIC. Give her 3 seconds and she’ll know your name, your favorite food, your favorite color, your BMI, your great great great great grandfather-
-She knew something was up with Piers the second she saw him, and being who she is, used her quiz to figure out what it was. Eventually, he spilled and told her everything during the challenge. She gave him some solid advice about protecting himself and sent him on his way with his badge.
-Later, when he became gym leader and she came to see him, she was able to get what had happened after the gym challenge out of him. She offered some more advice and then played with Marnie like old ladies do.
-They’re pretty friendly. Piers is slightly scared of her and she knows it, but she really cares about Piers and hopes he’s doing okay.
-Bonus headcanon: “I’m old, I can do what I want.” -Opal
Raihan:
-Raihan was the challenger that knocked Piers out of the gym challenge during the finals/semi-finals. Raihan was obsessed with how strong Piers was and kept trying to coax him into challenging him again and dynamaxing. Piers left after he lost and didn’t bother to see the rest of the challenge. Piers went home to his parents, who were livid that he lost.
-Not long after Piers’ parents left, he ran into Raihan again, who quickly figured out that it was just him and Marnie. Not long after that, Raihan became a gym leader and used that to help Piers get by and coax him back into training his pokemon.
-It was Raihan who got him to become the new Gym Leader for Spikemuth, so he was very happy. He was the one who introduced Leon and Piers.
-They’re close friends, even though Piers doesn’t act like it.
-Bonus Headcanon: Raihan was raised by a single father. His mother died when he was very young and he has no memory of her. Time to be sad, fellas.
Leon:
-Leon became champion in the finals that Piers was beaten in. He bested the old champion and then met back up with Raihan, who became his friend over the course of his gym challenge. Raihan spoke of nothing but beating Leon and finding Piers. Leon wasn’t very familiar with Piers. They never really met.
-When Piers became Gym Leader, Leon was supposed to go congratulate him, but he was really busy. Raihan weaseled his way into his schedule and dragged him to Spikemuth. There, he met Piers and Raihan explained Piers’ experience from his parents (which Raihan found out about later on) to his situation with Marnie. Leon really began to feel sympathy.
-Leon attempted to become friends with Piers, and it worked to an extent (through Hop I suppose mostly). It wasn’t until much later that Piers and Leon would become good friends.
-They’ve always been on friendly terms, though.
-Bonus headcanon: When Leon became champion, he became very arrogant and distant from his family. Hop was born after he became champion and he wasn’t the best bro at first. He simmered down, though, and really began to bond with his family again.
Thanks for the ask! This one took a while to write because I hadn’t really thought of that.
