Pilot - Part 2 (Three sandeks walk into a stable)
(Any words that may be unfamiliar to you are briefly explained in the appendix situated at the bottom)
☆ ☆ ☆
'What's that, lassie?'  Sneered the witch. With her repulsive, deformed snout, wart-covered nose, and those decaying yellow teeth, and the sickening manner in which she contorted and squirmed her index finger whenever she dared to point at someone, beckoning them to enter the wretched place that was anywhere within a six-foot radius of her, she might as well have been one. Straight out of a storybook, I tells ya!
'I ain't said nuthin'.'
One of the braver little asshats in her class perked up.
'She was sayin' sum, I hears it, Missus!'
'Oh, eat shit, Marty-
'She says sum more jus' now! She tellin' me to eat shi- !'
'An' I'mma shav it right intah that bastard piehole of yours if ya don't shut it right the fork now, you-'
'Mee-sus!'
'Alright, alright-' She tapped her foot-long ruler a few times on her desk. 'Enough roughhousing, you two, we'll sort who's shoving what-where after class-'
'But Missus Halberd- !'
'Marty, we spoke about this already! Last week, remember?'
The boy blinks his bug eyes. Once. Then twice, as his mouth hangs open, devoid of an answer. Heh, lamebrain...
'At the... bring-your-pet-to-Sunday-school day?' He decides to speak up finally. 'When y-you said that... Malinconico didn't count as a pet? And you gave me an F?'
Clearly, that day still hurt deep. Even Shu-Shu could feel bad for him. Almost, but not quite. Get stuffed still for snitchin' on me, Marty!
'Wha-no! That was the week before that! I'm talking about the time when we went over Schmooze 1 to 12, remember? Anyone?'
A hand shot up almost immediately from the desk next to her. Of forkin' course.
'Minnie-Trudy, yes, care to stand and remind us?' She did so unfailingly, like the little stuck-up bootlicker she was. Bleh.
'The Book of Shmooze. Pesuqim three twenty-three:' Her words were blunt, roughly cut, each syllable sung in its own individual pitch. She continues, while Shu-Shu's ears feel like they're about to drop off! "If one doth bear witness to the transgressions of another, he shall not bring forth his report unto the Lord, but rather remain silent. For the eyes of the Almighty doth encompass all things. It is an affront to the divine to point out that which is already within His sight, for it is an act of blasphemy. Thou shalt not be a snitch – for if one snitches, he shall get stiches. End of extract,'
Shu-Shu rolled her eyes so hard that they might've popped out of her head! Everything she says is just so – ugh... perfect. Like - all the time!
Hah! What a stinkin' nerd! No wonder she's still single!
'Very good, Minnie-Trudy, you can sit down now.' She obeys. Her eyes continue to stare dead ahead at nothing in particular, as much as anyone else would care. All that disgusting ass-kissing made Shu-shu hack. Loudly.
'*Cough!**cough!* - brawn-nozah - *cough!*.'
Some kids around her snickered. Minnie-Trudy only tilted her head curiously, like she wasn't already extremely well-accustomed to this.
Marty, on the other hand, was losing his marbles.
'B-But – that's!' He dared spare her another look.
'Pfffft!' Fortunately for him, blowing a raspberry was all that she had up her sleeve at that moment.
'T-That's n-not fair! Missus, s-she -!'
'Ach, ach, ach, Marty! You're insulting my sight, and by extension God's sight by pointing out Shu-Shu's sin - which is sleeping during my class."
'I ain't been sleepin'!' Said the defendant as she wipes some leftover saliva from the inside of her ear.
'Is that so, huh, lassie? Well, if you weren't sleeping, then pray tell - when The Celibate Merry gave birth to Ajus Kristee, who is not our lord and savior, as Kristian and Katholic propaganda would have you believe, he was brought three gifts. Who were the three people that brought them and why are their gifts important?'
'Uhh...'
Well, that put her in a pickle. How was she suppose to know this one? Crap! Concentrate at least damnit!
As she continued humming though, something had, in fact, popped into her head! Not the actual answer, no - but something better. Something brilliant.
Shu-Shu's idea had began to catch form into her head. It was looking good! It's time to put your confident shoes on, bustah!
'Oh! Why, it was that guy, obviously! Y'know?'
Already, some brows were raised. Oh ho ho, this was gonna be gold!
'Which guy, Shu-Shu? I already specified that there were three of them, didn't I?''
'Nah, there ain't.' Heh, slick 'n smooth's the way.
'What do you mean there 'ain't', lassie, answer the -'
'Nah, nah, see, here's the doozie – you're testin' me right now, ain't cha? This is cuh-lear-ly a trick question! Since every born 'n raised orthodox D'jew would know the answer to this one!'
'Girl, what're you going on about - !'
'It's - the – san- dek!' She practically sing-sang, pointing at her teacher triumphantly, as if saying ''got'cha!''
She hadn't thought that far ahead though, as she just stood there, pointer slowly falling. No one was laughing yet! It's ok, it's oh-kay! She just needed to improvise from that point onward! Yeah! Easy lemons.
'The... sandek! Yeah, yeah – he's like - suuuuper important! Every child only gets one, not three, and – and, he usually brings the babe all kinds of infant whatchamacallits! Heh, like, um, par exemple...'
Come on, down fall now! Think, Shu-Shu, think!
'...a kiddush cup?' Some chuckles had started echoing through the class. Good, good! It's working! Keep going!
' - an' diapers? A... mezuzah, money, or generally anything with the star of Conjubilant on it, it don' matter...'
The whole class had erupted into full-blown laughter at that point. Ha-hah! Suc-cess! One girl, Yael Horowitz, even started choking on her own uncontrollable cackle and struggled, like – actually struggled - to hold onto her stomach, each pant of laughter emitting an ongoing stream of tears and mucus. That's how hard she was laughing! It was not the most flattering sight, sure, but - she appreciated the compliment nonetheless. Snot an' all.
Marty, on the other hand, was still marinating in his own salt like the little crank-muffin he was. Everyone else was enjoying it though! Even Minnie-Trudy's monotone 'ha-ha's' weren't bugging her out as much! Crazy!
Heh, so worth it...
Shu-Shu leaned back into her chair with an air of self-satisfaction, hands propped casually behind her head, legs crossed on the desk, with a triumphant smirk adorning her face. Everyone was in unanimous agreement – the comedic timing and sheer hilarity of her antics were just too clever! Genius even!
Yet... amidst the uproar, one - Missus Halberd - stood devoid of amusement.
Instead - she was filled to the absolute brim with something else. Something that boiled, and that was bubbling out the edges.
Something... rage. She shook where she stood, gripping that ruler so hard that her knuckles turned white.
She'd be lying if she said she didn't know where this was gonna go. What a day full of her jokes amount to. As they always do. Yet she does it anyway, Sunday after Sunday - like an insane person. She just did it again now, and she, and everyone else had to face that demon – a real mean one. Pure fury.
Said fury was so hot that it began to spew.
Right. Out.
'Eee-nough!'
*Crack!*
She slammed the ruler so hard on the desk that it broke off a quarter -
'*Sniff - snif - * Eep!'
- and said quarter flew right past Yael Horowitz's head, then landed, tumbled and eventually slid to a stop on the linoleum floor.
Yael goes mute. Frozen. The rest of the class does too. She could swear that, in that one rigid second, even the cars outside went quiet, and that she could hear a fly snore from somewhere in the class.
'Shu-Shu!' Well, a second lasts only so long. 'I've had it with you! Why can't you be more like your sister, huh? You two look identical, yet you are nothing alike!'
'E-Eh, what can I say? Even with twins, h-humour's irreplicable!'
'Well, a good attitude can certainly be learned! Minnie-Trudy!' Her sister stood up straight, ready to fire. Metaphorically that is.
'Input command.' That squeaky voice stated.
'I trust that you, unlike your delinquent sister, can answer the question properly.'
'Input command.'
'Yeesh, you kids and your funny words...' She shook her head briefly. 'Answer the question, Minnie-Trudy!'
The girl simply stares dead ahead of her. The other kids start chuckling.
Shu-Shu on the other hand was not having any of it! Ugh, who does she think she is?
Minnie-Trudy looks around and inspects her surroundings. Turns left – she looks down - DEAREST SISTER.
Turns right - looks down - PURPOSELESS PREMATURE LIFE FORM.
Looks forward - PURPOSELESS ADULT LIFE FORM.
No command inputted. Initiating inquisitor assistance protocol...
'Does not compute. An error has occurred in processing your request. Please submit a report for device malfunction and seek assistance at the headquarters building in Munich - '
'Alright, alright, sit back down!' The whole class was in hysterics at that point. Shu-Shu hated it. She was supposed to be the funny one! Not...uh, forget it.
Minnie-Trudy settles back into her seat, hands folded neatly on her lap, while the rest of her body stood motionless as if frozen in time. She then abruptly turns her head towards Shu-Shu and attempts to mimic a smile, her very own interpretation of a friendly gesture.
Shu-Shu, however, sits unimpressed, and rolls her eyes in a display of exasperation and emits a dismissive scoff. What a nitwit!
'Now, now, don't think that if your sister's had a nervous breakdown that gets you off the hook, lassie!' Said Halberd, waving that accursed finger cockily. 'You've just earned yourself extra homework for next week! On top of our usual weekly work, you have to write me an essay about the not-messiah and how his birth impacted D'judaism today. And - on top of that, you also have to learn all the archaisms and recite them to me by heart next Sunday.'
A choir of mocking 'ooh's!' rose and circled Shu-Shu's head like a pack of vultures, making her sink deeper into her seat in annoyance. Marty, especially, had the most shit-eating grin and the effort to bawl up her fist and punch it right off was just too exasperating! This was all so bogus!
'You got all that lassie?'
Blah blah blah, yeah I got it alright! Flippin' sick of this already!
'Choke on a potato...' She spat out with half a mouth as she slumped her head on the desk. Some kids around her laugh. She doesn't care! Why even would she? It's not like hearing those laughs will lull her back to sleep. Back to her dream... wait.
Her... dream?
'What was that?'
'Uh-ah - I smell a tornado!' The class erupts into laughter once again. Even more laughter than when Minnie-Trudy did her thing! Hah, take that, ya twit! Never mind their betrayal, this feeling rocks! She turns to her, ready to indulge in sister's jealousy.
Minnie-Trudy grins from ear to ear. Welp, that killed her mood.
'Oh. I too smell incoming destruction! But, since we have the Birkat Habayit at the entrance, we should be fine. Plus, we sprayed some goat blood on the entrance earlier this month, so you could say that we'll be – passed over.' She pauses to laugh at her own pun. Ugh. During days like this, no one could possibly succumb to this sort of humour! It was just too cheap!
Shu-Shu rolled her eyes as she began explaining it. The joke, the religious implications, the Torahdorian lore, it bored her and the rest of the class to tears! Not even Minnie-Trudy was making any slight attempt at entertaining her. Good!
But finally, they've been spared a single sliver of mercy as the school bell tolls. Yes!
A welcome relief washes over them, releasing them from the clutches of their prison-like desks.
Yet... even amidst the rush of liberation and screams of joy, Shu-Shu's mind remains fixated on her elusive dream. Was it truly a dream? The more she tries to recall it, the more it slips through her grasp. Fragments of memory tease her consciousness—something about swimming and... dancing?
The throbbing ache in her head amplifies with each futile attempt to recapture the fading images. Pounding relentlessly, it threatens to consume her thoughts. Just as the pain begins to subside, she realizes with a pang of disappointment that the dream has slipped away entirely, lost in the recesses of her subconscious.
Huh. Well, that sucks.
'Eh, no trouble, it'll most likely just destroy the Katholic School down the street. Those papists have it way overdue...'
Whatever thought lingered in her mind made that expression of hers turn sour. Even more so than usual. She was getting some odd glances from the kids as they passed her on the way out.
'Ach, never mind that! Say your prayers before bed and remember to keep Treif or you won't be spared when the Armageddon finally comes!'
'Yes - Missus - Halberd!' The students parroted right as they flew out the door, grateful – as ever - to have lived to see another Sunday.

5 Tips for Improving Your Song’s Melodic Hooks
Melodic hooks can be the heart of a song. These tasty bits of ear candy can make the difference between an “almost” – and a life-changing hit. They can be instrumental or sung and can occur in any section of a song – the intro, verse, chorus, pre-chorus, post-chorus, bridge, or outro. Catchy musical phrases hook in your listeners and keep them on the proverbial line. They can occur in multiple sections of a given song (i.e., a verse, a pre-chorus, and chorus) and although it is not typical, there can be more than one musical and/or vocal hook per section. But they are most frequently found in choruses and post-choruses. Ideally, unforgettable hooks pop into our heads–or pour out of our keyboards or guitars–spontaneously. But when they don’t, we can apply craft to create these extra-memorable melodic moments and add additional hooks to maximize our songs’ chances for success. Let’s look at five ways to embellish our melodies and help them burn into listeners’ brains. 1. Use a Stutter A stutter in a song occurs when melody is crafted so that part of a word—typically the first syllable—is repeated one or more times by the vocalist. A perfect example of a song with a st-st-st-stutter is Carrie Underwood’s smash hit, “Undo It” (written by Underwood with Kara DioGuardi, Marti Fredericksen, and Luke Laird). The title is sung “Uh-Uh-Uh-Uh-Uh-Uh-Uh-Undo It,” turning the stutter into the primary hook in the chorus. For another example, listen to Elton John’s “Bennie and the Jets” (written by Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin). It’s hard to imagine that #1 song without its signature stutter, the “Buh-Buh-Buh” that precedes the name “Bennie.” 2. Repeat a Rhythm Write a melody that includes a unique, instantly memorable rhythm in the vocal melody of a given section of your song (i.e., verse, chorus …). Then repeat this rhythm multiple times within the same part of the song. In order to accomplish this, each line that has the same rhythm needs to have the same—or approximately the same—number of syllables in the lyric that accompanies it. This technique resulted in a powerhouse hook in GRAMMY winning Best Rock Song, “When I’m Gone” (recorded by 3 Doors Down and written by band members Brad Arnold, Todd Harrell, Matt Roberts, and Chris Henderson). Note how the last note of each line of the chorus is emphasized, and that every line of the chorus melody repeats almost the same rhythm, creating a melody that delivered it to the top of Billboard’s Top 40 Mainstream and Hot Mainstream Rock charts. To hear another great example of the power of this technique, listen to the quirky rhythms in the melodic phrases that repeat in the verses of Old Dominion’s “No Such Thing as a Broken Heart” (written by Jesse Frasure, BMI’s reigning Country Songwriter of the Year, with Matthew Ramsey, Trevor Rosen, and Brad Tursi). Also note the musical phrase that repeats in the choruses. 3. Include a “Nonsense Syllable” In this context, a nonsense syllable refers to a sound that is sung but has no meaning. These include: “Ooh,” Oh,” Yo,” “Ay,” “Ahh,” “Ooh,” and “I.” These (and other sounds) can be joined together to create vocal hooks that combine melodies with sounds such as, “Oh-I, Oh-I, Oh,” “Ooh, Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh,” and “Ay-Ay-Ay-Ay-Oh-Ay-Oh.” Camila Cabello’s breakthrough smash, “Havana” (featuring Young Thug, and written by Cabello with Jeffrey Williams, Frank Dukes, Brittany Hazzard, Ali Tamposi, Brian Lee, Andrew Watt, Pharrell Williams, Kaan Gunesberk, and Louis Bell) added the sound “ooh-na-na (ay, ay)” to the title to create an unforgettable hook. Similarly, Sugarland used “Whoa-oh, whoa-oh” to take their song, “Stuck Like Glue” (written by Jennifer Nettles, Kristian Bush, Kevin Griffin, and Shy Carter) to the #1 slot on Billboard’s Country Digital Songs Chart, racking up more than 2.6 millions digital sales along the way. 4. Add a catchy post-chorus A post-chorus can be defined as a part of a song that occurs after the chorus, providing an additional hook that typically includes vocals. It introduces melody that is not heard in the chorus or elsewhere in the song, and in many instances, it has few lyrics that have not previously been heard in the song. It often reiterates the title and incorporates nonsense syllables. Examples of strong post-choruses include Keith Urban’s “Wasted Time” (written by Urban with James Abrahart and William Wells). For more information about post-chorus references, check out “The Power of Post-Choruses.” 5. Include a Catchy Instrumental Lick A musical motif, sometimes referred to as a signature lick, is a melodic phrase that is typically introduced in a song’s intro and recurs throughout the song. Some hit songs, such as Vanessa Carlton’s “Thousand Miles” and Jason Derulo's "Talk Dirty" have multiple instrumental phrases that serve as hooks. Carlton’s #1 hit includes a motif that is played on piano during the intro and in the verses, as well as the instrumental hook played by the strings in the second half of the verses. One of my favorite instrumental hooks is the guitar lick that introduces Rascal Flatts’ recording of “What Hurts the Most” (written by Jeffrey Steele and Steve Robson). This version of the song reached #1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs and Adult Contemporary charts and received a Country Song of the Year GRAMMY nomination. The same lick can be heard (with slight variations) played on a synthesizer in Cascada’s pop/dance recording of the same song. At a recent songwriting workshop, I led my students through an exercise during which they applied each of these techniques to one of their songs. They explored including a stutter, repeating hooky rhythms, adding nonsense syllables, writing a post-chorus, and incorporating a catchy musical lick. One unforgettable hook can be your song’s ticket to the top of the charts. But why stop at one, when multiple hooks can maximize your chances of success? Try these tools in your own songs. Not every song will be benefit from each of these techniques; the decision needs to be made on a song-by-song basis. But you won’t know whether one or more of these melodic tools might take your song to the next level unless you try.

A very busy Monday
August 19th
Monday. Last week.
Today is packed with events and lectures. Starting at 9, a Danish class. We discussed poetry today, our own translations, to be more precise. Monika talked about Danish design, and I got really interested in the subject. Her voice is very calm, and I generally feel very at-ease at her presence.
We discussed Danish food just before lunch and that was enough to get my stomach working. For lunch today we had sandwiches, rye bread with some cold chicken, eggs and salad.
5 km walk to Skibelund Krat after lunch. Skibelund was once at the German border, since North Schleswig was part of Germany at the time. The park offers a great view of the Jutland dale, and the idea was that from that point you could look towards the lost lands.
A lecture on Danish art, architecture and design at 4. Really interesting, Henning went on talking for almost an hour and I didn’t even realise it. Too bad for Kristian though, because he had to squeeze all of his 40 slides into 15 minutes. We talked Poul Henningsen and Bjarke Ingels, functionalism and structuralism, and light.
Dinner. We had yet another arrangement, the students from Askov efterskole had prepared a presentation. At this point I was so exhausted and my headache grew stronger, so I decided to pass on this one. Marti stayed in, as well.

What do you see the Jets honestly doing this off season? What are your predictions of who is coming back?
Oh what a question! Let’s see if I can not upset myself here…
Let’s start with the good stuff. I think Patrik and KC will be back. Those two I can say I’m as close to positive as I can be in this league. If either try to sign an offer letter, the Jets WILL match it, whatever it is. I think it might come to that with Patrik, but I think KC will just sign.
I think Jake will walk because he’s going to ask for too much money and the Jets can pay three guys with what they’d have to give him, and he’s not worth it. If this happens, Nate will be back. If Jake stays, Nate will not. If Jake goes, it’s possible Tyler stays, but there’s NO way to keep Jake and Tyler. And I’d rather have Jake, but honestly, I don’t care if we lose Tyler either way. I like him well enough, but I don’t think he’d be that big of a loss.
I think Ben will be back, but they’re going to have to pay him to keep him. If Jake goes, he’ll be back 100%, but even if Jake stays, I think they can afford him. He won’t get that much of a raise. (We know that Kiselevich is going back to Russia, and I don’t blame him, so that’s $1mil free that we can use for them.)
I don’t think Kevin will be back. (I’m sorry, Martie!) I think he’ll want too much and we just don’t have the money to pay him what another team could. I think he’s this season’s Paul Stastny. (And Paul regretted it. Will Kevin?) We don’t need Matt Hendricks to cheerlead for us, he’ll go (again). I wouldn’t be shocked to see Joe Morrow go, and I don’t know if anyone would mind.
Andrew and Brandon are the ones I just don’t know about. I think Brandon will stay, because I don’t think they’ll get more anywhere else. I think he knows his role, and I don’t think he’s going to go out looking to be someone’s second line guy. On the other hand, I can’t say the same for Andrew. I think he could go out and try to get a bigger role with someone else. I don’t think it will work well for him, but I could see him try. Depending on what kind of offer sheet he signs, I could see them match or let him walk.
Especially if they both walk, I think next season will will see more Mason Appleton and Kristian Vesalainen. Even if they don’t, though, we’ll see them. And of course, more Sami. I don’t think he’ll see the Moose again.
Will we see a trade? I kinda think so. And I kinda wonder if it will be a big one, too. And I kinda wonder if the person that’s going already knows it (and maybe wants it, asked for it). I would pay careful attention at the Draft, because I would not be shocked to see a move. But even if not then, I think it could still happen. I don’t know if I should say out loud what I think it will be.
THANK YOU FOR ASKING!! This was a great question!

TNT - The People Network - directors cut from The Panics on Vimeo.
Amsterdam agency Etcetera turned to The Panics director Mischa Rozema to take on the challenge of their hugely ambitious Human Network script. Central to the integrated global campaign for TNT, is a stunning 50 second television spot highlighting the delivery giant's far-reaching network of dedicated couriers. With an accompanying tvc cutdown of 30 seconds, personalised video for TNT's existing clientbase and several key print visuals, The Panics took on producing the main bulk of the integrated campaign followed by localising to 32 countries.
The hugely ambitious script appealed to director Rozema's taste for taking on the epic, "There was just no way to turn a script like that down," says Rozema "Even though it had ‘IMPOSSIBLE’ written all over it. The complexity, the size, the craziness. Maybe that’s what really pulled me in to this. I just loved stepping into the unknown and finding out how we could make this work."
For Rozema, the biggest challenge was how to avoid the vfx becoming the focus of the tvc. "The Panics is set up differently then most production companies because we have our own in-house post production team which works instinctively with the directors. The temptation would have been to apply all that specialised knowledge and make this into a vfx fest but actually we threw out a lot of vfx when we started the project. We stepped into this trying to create as much ‘in camera’ as we could." This meant the production company had to set up major shoots in 5 locations across Europe ranging from live action drone-powered aerial mountain road scenes to complicated motion-capture acrobatic performances. Rozema, "We decided to really push what could be achieved in camera by actually creating a full size human truck on the set. It worked by having a huge, truck-sized, metal rig that could be pulled by an actual truck. We then filled it with an incredible Czech stunt team (famous for big Hollywood blockbusters) that had been rehearsing for weeks and gave the whole project a realistic approach. To be honest in the end, we used more VFX in the backgrounds (creating a non-existing airport, alpine road-tunnels and cities) than on the actual vehicles where you’d expect them."

We need healthy habits to live meaningfully and purposefully

Happy Father’s Day to all the incredible fathers of this world!
Fathers play a vital role in shaping our children’s views of men and the role men play in our lives. Children’s relationship with their father is usually the very first connection they make with a man, and that foundation changes their outlook on future relationships.
Being a good parent takes more than just having a child. It takes real dedication to show up, love unconditionally, and put your child’s needs above your own.
In order to be committed to the mental and emotional well-being of the child, parents must also look after their own health. We cannot offer our children what we do not cultivate in ourselves.
For the past few weeks I’ve been focusing on my own mental and emotional growth. Constantly indulging in the superficial and materialistic facade of social media can be an obstacle to processing the real depths of our feelings. It can be easy to ignore how we really feel inside when we lose ourselves scrolling endlessly through the highlights of other people’s lives. After slowly reconnecting and engaging with my inner well-being, I realized that we cannot be fully healed unless we are whole physically and emotionally.
Self-care is a conscious balance between listening to what your body, mind, and spirit need. We must strive to maintain healthy habits in order to live meaningfully and purposefully. After researching various ways to care for myself through self-help books, therapy sessions, and online podcasts, I now devote my time to anti-aging programs, online exercise classes, and shopping for exercise equipment.

Healthy aging
There are many ways to healthy aging. Proper diet and other lifestyle factors play important roles in adding years to your life and life to your years.
When I was younger I thought 50-year-olds were near the end of their lives. Now that I’ve got this midlife brand behind me, I have a completely different mindset and perspective on getting old. I’ve realigned my priorities to extend the number of years I can live free from the ailments associated with aging – from unwanted wrinkles, memory loss, and creaky joints to a weakened immune system and more!
In order to defy the effects of aging without going under the knife, I have found some helpful tips to “feed” the brain, “eat” for beautiful skin and “sleep” for regeneration. Staying fit in old age is an important aspect of longevity.
Diet and exercise are important preventive measures to slow the onset of age-related cognitive decline. The brain needs healthy fats like omega-3 fatty acids in order for our brain cells to function. Oily fish, like mackerel, can help stave off the deterioration in our minds. Nutrient-rich salmon is also a popular source of omega-3 fatty acids and also contains high levels of vitamins D and B. For vegetarians, omega-3 fatty acids are also found in chia seeds, walnuts and extra virgin olive oil.
Plant-based foods are linked with higher levels of nutrients that benefit the brain. Red, blue, and purple berries can also help protect brain cells from aging. After learning that you can “feed” your brain to stay sharp, I realized that my daughter Jordan Prieto-Valdes’ vegan lifestyle may have made her an even more brilliant writer and artist. She edited my weekly columns and made good use of her magna cum laude screenwriting degree from Chapman University!
The longer you practice maintaining a healthy lifestyle, the more long-term benefits you will have. It’s about finding the right habits that make you feel good. I was happy to read that wine is actually on the “good for the brain” list. Sometimes we drink enough wine to say smart things, but we end up doing stupid deeds. So remember: moderation is key.

Well-fed cells
Living health starts with well-nourished cells. Since eating right all the time can be challenging, it is important to take supplements to provide us with the right nutrients.
Usana CellSentials are so much more than your average multivitamins. Each daily dose provides essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and additional key nutrients. Made with Usana’s patented Usana InCelligence technology, the exclusive InCelligence Complex goes beyond just nourishing the body. It also helps activate your body’s natural ability to respond to stress and keep your cells healthy.
In addition, Usana BiOmega contains omega-3 fatty acids, the fatty acids that keep you healthy in old age.
Vitamin C is an essential nutrient that must be obtained through food because your body cannot make it naturally. As a source of vitamin C, Usana Poly C offers a number of important benefits such as antioxidant activity that neutralizes free radical damage to help maintain cell health.
Regular exercise could both reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease in healthy adults and increase cognitive performance in people with little memory loss.
For timelessly beautiful skin, there are many beauty products that help reduce all unwanted lines and age spots. Eating a nutritious diet that includes antioxidant foods will also help keep skin clear. The antioxidant vitamin E helps against wrinkles; some good sources are almonds, spinach, and sunflower seeds.
If you want to have beautiful skin, what you eat is important. To reduce age lines and inflammation, as well as increase collagen and moisture for healthy skin, add foods that contain vitamin C, lipoic acid, collagen, ellagic acid (helps prevent wrinkles), and omega-3 fatty acids. You can find these nutrients naturally in watermelon, bone broth, coffee, salmon, and dark chocolate. Probiotics can also prevent skin damage.
For the fathers out there who are grandfathers or even great grandfathers now, I wish you a very special Father’s Day as you enjoy a day of blessings you deserve. May the Lord shower you with healthy, strong years of fulfilling joys and relaxing times. Take the time to take care of yourself so that you can take care of your loved ones even more! INQ

One America News Network Stays True to Trump Months after the inauguration of President Biden, One America News Network, a right-wing cable news channel available in some 35 million households, has continued to broadcast segments questioning the validity of the 2020 presidential election. “There’s still serious doubts about who’s actually president,” the OAN correspondent Pearson Sharp said in a March 28 report. That segment was one in a spate of similar reports from a channel that has become a kind of Trump TV for the post-Trump age, an outlet whose reporting has aligned with the former president’s grievances at a time when he is barred from major social media platforms. Some of OAN’s coverage has not had the full support of the staff. In interviews with 18 current and former OAN newsroom employees, 16 said the channel had broadcast reports that they considered misleading, inaccurate or untrue. To go by much of OAN’s reporting, it is almost as if a transfer of power had never taken place. The channel did not broadcast live coverage of Mr. Biden’s swearing-in ceremony and Inaugural Address. Into April, news articles on the OAN website consistently referred to Donald J. Trump as “President Trump” and to President Biden as just “Joe Biden” or “Biden.” That practice is not followed by other news organizations, including the OAN competitor Newsmax, a conservative cable channel and news site. OAN has also promoted the debunked theory that the rioters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 were left-wing agitators. Toward the end of a March 4 news segment that described the attack as the work of “antifa” and “anti-Trump extremists” — and referred to the president as “Beijing Biden” — Mr. Sharp said, “History will show it was the Democrats, and not the Republicans, who called for this violence.” Investigations have found no evidence that people who identify with antifa, a loose collective of antifascist activists, were involved in the Capitol riot. Charles Herring, the president of Herring Networks, the company that owns OAN, defended the reports casting doubt on the election. “Based on our investigations, voter irregularities clearly took place in the November 2020 election,” he said. “The real question is to what extent.” Herring Networks was founded by Mr. Herring’s father, the tech entrepreneur Robert Herring, who at age 79 runs OAN with Charles and another son, Robert Jr. About 150 employees work for the channel at its headquarters in San Diego. Nielsen does not report viewership statistics for OAN, which is not a Nielsen client. (Charles Herring cited Nielsen’s “heavy fees.”) In a survey last month, Pew Research reported that 7 percent of Americans, including 14 percent of Republicans, had gotten political news from OAN. By contrast, 43 percent of Americans and 62 percent of Republicans had gotten political news from Fox News, the survey found. While OAN appeals to a relatively small audience, its coverage reflects views commonly held by Republicans. In a Reuters/Ipsos poll last month, about half of Republicans said they believed that the Jan. 6 attack, which left five dead, was largely a nonviolent protest or was the handiwork of left-wing activists. Six in 10 of Republicans surveyed said they also believed Mr. Trump’s claim that the election was “stolen.” OAN, which started in 2013, gained attention when it broadcast Mr. Trump’s campaign speeches in full before the 2016 election. In recent months, it has courted viewers who may have felt abandoned by Fox News, which on election night was the first news outlet to project Mr. Biden as the winner of Arizona, a key swing state. In a mid-November promotional ad, OAN accused Fox News of joining “the mainstream media in censoring factual reporting.” OAN’s stories “appeal to people who want to believe that the election was not legitimate,” said Stephanie L. Edgerly, an associate professor at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. “These are two mutually reinforcing narratives of people who want to believe it and continue to get that fire stoked by OAN.” Marty Golingan, a producer at the channel since 2016, said OAN had changed in recent years. At the start of his employment, he said, it concentrated more on neutral coverage based on reports from The Associated Press or Reuters. He saw it as a scrappy upstart where he could produce cheeky feature stories, he said. During the Trump presidency, it moved right, Mr. Golingan said. And when he was watching coverage of the pro-Trump mob breaking into the Capitol, he said, he worried that his work might have helped inspire the attack. He added that he and others at OAN disagreed with much of the channel’s coverage. “The majority of people did not believe the voter fraud claims being run on the air,” Mr. Golingan said in an interview, referring to his colleagues. He recalled seeing a photo of someone in the Capitol mob holding a flag emblazoned with the OAN logo. “I was like, OK, that’s not good,” Mr. Golingan said. “That’s what happens when people listen to us.” Charles Herring defended OAN’s coverage. “A review process with multiple checks is in place to ensure that news reporting meets the company’s journalist standards,” he said. “And, yes, we’ve had our fair share of mistakes, but we do our best to keep them to a minimum and learn from our missteps.” Mr. Golingan added that, since Inauguration Day, OAN’s news director, Lindsay Oakley, had reprimanded him for referring to Mr. Biden as “President Biden” in news copy. Ms. Oakley did not reply to requests for comment. “OAN’s staff White House reporters use the term President Biden and then may use Mr. Biden,” Charles Herring said. “The term Biden or Biden administration may also be used.” He declined to reply to a question on the channel’s use of “President Trump” for Mr. Trump. Allysia Britton, a news producer, said she was one of more than a dozen employees who had left OAN in the wake of the Capitol riot. She criticized some of what the channel had reported, saying it was not up to journalistic standards. “Many people have raised concerns,” Ms. Britton said in an interview. “And the thing is, when people speak up about anything, you will get in trouble.” Charles Herring confirmed that about a dozen OAN workers had left in recent months, saying many of them were not high-level employees. Assignments that the elder Mr. Herring takes a special interest in are known among OAN staff as “H stories,” several current and former employees said. The day after Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, Mr. Herring instructed OAN employees in an email, which The New York Times reviewed, to “report all the things Antifa did yesterday.” Some “H stories” are reported by Kristian Rouz, an OAN correspondent who had written for Sputnik, a site backed by the Russian government. In a report in May on the pandemic, Mr. Rouz said Covid-19 might have started as a “globalist conspiracy to establish sweeping population control,” one that had ties to Bill and Hillary Clinton, the billionaires George Soros and Bill Gates, and “the deep state.” Ms. Britton, the former OAN producer, recalled checking a website that Mr. Rouz had cited to back some of his reporting. “It literally took me to this chat room where it’s just conservatives commenting toward each other,” she said. In an email to staff last month, Ms. Oakley, the news director, warned producers against ignoring or playing down Mr. Rouz’s work. “His stories should be considered ‘H stories’ and treated as such,” she wrote in the email, which The Times reviewed. “These stories are often slugged and copy-edited by ME as per Mr. H’s instructions.” OAN’s online audience is significant, with nearly 1.5 million subscribers to its YouTube channel. One of its most popular videos, with about 1.5 million views since it went online Nov. 24, criticized Dominion Voting Systems, the election technology company whose equipment was used in more than two dozen states last year, including several won by Mr. Trump. Hosted by the OAN White House correspondent, Chanel Rion, the video shows a man who said he had infiltrated Dominion and heard company executives say they would “make sure” Mr. Trump lost. Dominion has sued Fox News and two of Mr. Trump’s lawyers, Rudolph W. Giuliani and Sidney Powell, accusing them of making or promoting defamatory claims. A lawyer for Dominion, who did not reply to requests for comment, has said the company is considering further legal action. Mr. Golingan, the producer, said some OAN employees had hoped Dominion would sue the channel. “A lot of people said, ‘This is insane, and maybe if they sue us, we’ll stop putting stories like this out,’” he said. Weeks after Dominion filed its first defamation suits, OAN broadcast a two-hour video in which the chief executive of MyPillow, Mike Lindell, made his case that widespread voter fraud had occurred. YouTube removed the video the day it was posted, saying it violated the platform’s election integrity policy. Last month, an OAN report described Dominion’s “voting machines” as “notorious.” Two of the current and former employees interviewed for this article — Dan Ball, a talk-show host, and Neil W. McCabe, a former reporter — described OAN’s coverage as unbiased. Mr. McCabe, who now writes for The Tennessee Star, said the network gave a “voice to people that are just not covered.” Susan Beachy contributed research.
