One of the things I enjoyed about the mobile app was how it used to let you format posts through HTML or Markdown coding. Would it be possible to bring it back? It's kinda weird that the NPF Editor is used on all different platforms, but HTML and Markdown are exclusive to desktop and the mobile website.
Answer: Hey there, @violetganache42!
Sadly, we are not going to bring it to the mobile apps. While we understand that it can be handy to a few people, we are sorry to say it is not handy enough, to not enough folks, to warrant prioritizing that work now.
Should this ever change, however, you will find this at the usual channels: here or over at @changes.

Fun fact. Markdown... is a markup language
If you do not know what markup is... you should look it up. It is basically HTML that works both encoded and as clear text. Meaning it is the perfect note taking "language". In reality it is "just" a convention for how to write super nice-looking notes that have been tested by millions of people to be the very best it can be.
No big deal.
Oh also it is free, you do not even need a special program to look at it. Your browser can do it perfectly.

I fucking hate markdown because it turns roleplay stars (asterisks) into italics
Like
No???

ngl i genuinely think that learning to use markdown for word processing stuff is the nicest thing i have ever done for myself. before i was like "oh, i wish there was an easier way to make documentation to my conlang!" and then i saw people conlang with markdown and i was like oh shit that's fire.
so yeah, shoutouts to markdown.

Because of who I am as a person, I’m now writing fic in a Markdown editor.
Google Docs is great, but i twitch at the formatting issues that happen when I copy/paste from Google Docs into AO3’s rich text editor. Extra spaces between paragraphs, words, punctuation, etc. (It doesn’t bother me at all when reading other people’s fic. But it bothers me a lot when it’s my own.)
So I’ve been writing the HTML by hand, and geez that is tedious and error-prone.
But with Markdown, I can write text like normal, using simple text formatting tricks we learned in text-only forums, and then have it magically turned into proper HTML afterwards. Examples under the cut.
For example:
Italics
*asterisks for italics*
will turn into <em>asterisks for italics</em>
which will become asterisks for italics
Bold
**double asterisks for bold**
will turn into <strong>double asterisks for bold</strong>
which will become double asterisks for bold
Strikethrough
~~strikethrough like this~~
will turn into <strike>strikethrough like this</strike>
which will become strikethrough like this
Blockquote
> blockquote like this
will turn into <blockquote>blockquote like this </blockquote>
which will become
blockquote like this
Horizontal rule
Three dashes like so:
---
will turn into <hr/>
which will become a horizontal line
Hyperlinks
[Make links like this](https://www.markdownguide.org/cheat-sheet/)
will turn into <a href="https://www.markdownguide.org/cheat-sheet/">Make links like this </a>
which will turn into linked text, Make links like this
App
I’m currently using the app Pretext on iOS so I can write on my phone. There are various apps around — search for “markdown editor” on whatever app store your platform has.
I’m still on the hunt for a Markdown app that understands footnotes. (You can do footnotes with Markdown, but not every Markdown editor understands how to turn them into HTML.)
But even if I have to manually edit the HTML for footnotes, it’ll still be less work than manually editing the HTML for everything.
Google Docs compatibility
Bonus: Google Docs can understand Markdown (it’s an option you can turn on). So if you still want to use Google Docs to collaborate/beta-read, you can copy-paste your plain text Markdown into a Google Doc, turn on the “Automatically detect Markdown” option, and it will be magically turned into proper formatting. https://support.google.com/docs/answer/12014036?hl=en

I could probably make a clearer version of this video but hopefully it's got useful info for someone. Writing in markdown is key to making your #ttrpg creations accessible.

Tumblr, don't kill code blocks
In markdown and html we have code blocks, easy ways to represent code. This normally switches the font from the default to a monospace font which results in more legible code and with things like highlight.js even highlighted code
Tumblr media
The above was highlighted, rendered client side. The only work that needed to be done server side was convert the markdown code block to html, I would show the appropriate code conversions but I can't without it being butchered by tumblr's nue post format. This has killed posting for me. I'm new to tumblr and the main thing that kicked of my real use of tumblr was the ability to post in markdown, which gives you the power to have readable code. For someone who mainly post's code not having code blocks kills the experience for me. Tumblr its not that difficult to support code blocks, many websites do support it. Don't downgrade the experience and go mainstream. Keep code blocks, let us post and share code. A lot of us are developers. Don't butcher our posts for your fancy new UI

Testing
So, I am learning markdown and surprisingly, Tumblr is supposed to handle it natively. So this post is really just a test. Let's see what happens when I post it.
