literally like shoutout to the beast and creature and critter transgenders. Shoutout to the people whose gender is only even remotely described, by the existence of werewolves or bugs or perhaps a little shrew..........

Happy Fossil Friday! With sharp teeth, long legs, and sickle claws, Deinonychus antirrhopus was likely a formidable predator. This dinosaur, which could reach lengths of about 7 ft (2.1 m) from nose to tail, lived during the Early Cretaceous, some 107 million years ago. It belonged to a group of dinosaurs called maniraptors, or “hand-robbers.” Its hands and feet were equipped with sharp claws for catching and grasping prey. Like modern-day birds, it had hollow bones.
Fun fact: The Deinonychus on display in the Museum is a real fossil skeleton—and the only one of its kind on display anywhere in the world! See it up close in the Hall of Saurischian Dinosaurs! We're open daily from 10 am-5:30 pm. Plan your visit.

All the "birds are dinosaurs" deniers got me thinking:
Is there a specific word to refer to dinosaurs as common non scientific perception defines them??? Like, everything I can think of is either too specific (ie 'jurassic period dinosaurs') or just. "Extinct/prehistorical dinosaurs" or something like that, and that's just... eh. "Extinct" is at least kinda funny because it includes ivory billed woodpeckers but not pileated woodpeckers lol
Sometimes when I speak about dinosaurs to friends and stuff (and what that one person who was like "I want to see a dinosaur and it makes me sad that I can't!" person was probably getting at) I want to specifically refer to the sorts of species that are old enough to be fossils, you know? Including the old avian dinosaurs! :)
Apologies if you've answered this sort of ask before! But since I don't know the word I cannot search your blog for it lol. Thank you in advance, I love seeing you on my dash and learning things!
so there's a few different things you could mean depending on the situation.
here's the thing:
what's a bird, to you?
if you want the smallest group you can pick, ie the clade that consists of all the birds of today and nothing else, then you mean
"non-neornithine dinosaur"
aka
dinosaurs that aren't in Neornithes, which is that smallest possible group
so if you want to say "nonavian dinosaur" (aka, a dinosaur that isn't a "bird") you have to know what you're saying
bc there is also "nonavialan dinosaur", that is often just "nonavian dinosaur", aka the group of dinosaurs that have traditionally been considered as such exclusive of things that sometimes got put with birds instead
aka it includes Velociraptor but not Archaeopteryx
but the difference between the two is honestly miniscule at this point and things jump around a lot. many scientists do not think that's how we should define bird versus "classical dinosaur"
hence non-neornithine, aka neornithes being just the dinosaurs that survived the end-cretaceous extinction (most likely don't worry about it) and into the cenozoic, and non-neornithine dinosaurs being all that went extinct
being the most exact term for what you're looking for
you also could just go simple and do "classical dinosaurs"
but most often you'll see "nonavian dinosaur" which usually means, in practical parlance, non-neornithine dinosaur, or maybe non-avialan. sometimes non-pygostylian if they want to be contrarian, even non-maniraptor(iform?) if they want to be hipster
it's a fun time
what is a bird, indeed

My gender and my theriotype/kintype are closely linked to the point where my gender is literally just, in increasingly broad terms, "Velocitaptor. Dromeasaur. Maniraptor. Theropod. Dinosaur. Archosaur. Amniote. Tetrapod. Vertebrate. Animal/Creature." and I think that's great
That is great!!

Oh yeah, I've also been spending my time on 4dopt lately and have a species waiting to be approved :D Look at my children! The auto generated names are very funny to me. Made a sinosauropteryx out of a velociraptor(esque) because they are the superior maniraptor(jk love them both)

No clue if this weekend's opening window is still open but if it is :) got a link here. Not really a game for everyone but as a guy who likes to press button endlessly I like it for now.

TFA Talon would still find her way to Earth but some how gets lumped in with the Dinobots (simply because her alt mode is a techno-organic maniraptor type dinosaur), and because of this somehow becomes their spokesperson since she's weirdly well spoken despite the whole aspect of her being seen as less than normal. She handles matters between the Dinobots, humans, Autobots, and a few other Cybertronians who end up on Earth.
Don't know how the Jettwins would factor into this, but they are pretty much the reason she escapes from containment.
Okay she's gotta have interesting interactions with the dinobots, and her becoming the middleman here has to lead to funny moments (especially regarding say Captain Fanzone and the dinobots)

I don’t do much digital painting but here I am attempting my first dino piece. Gota get rid of the grass, clean up the rocks and plants, add more to the water and pick a cretaceous therapod to put on the ledge.  Thats supposed to be some cretaceous maniraptor, deinonychus specifically but i’m unsure if that’s obvious or not.  So much to learn. Essentially, i have NO idea what im doing but im doing it.

finished watching a life on our planet. if prehistoric planet didnt exist id say WOW THAT WAS AMAZING but it does, and it Raised The Bar So Fuckin High so i wwill instead say its mid. i enjoyed the visuals ESPECIALLY when seeing things set in the cenozoic (the maiacetus....MWAH! CHEFS KISS, A GOOD WATER DOG) but the stuff set before that looked.....Bad....happy to see feathered maniraptors but even then it looks like really iffy and weird. something about the arrangement and positioning of the feathers. big theropods like tyrannosaurus rex and sinraptor all look like ass </3
THE NARRATION SUCKS BIG TIME ALSO. leans very....awesome-bro-y....it stinks so bad but i kinda got used to it lol. it has way more live-action footage (of modern-day earth) than i expected and i skipped most of them cuz theres a billion other documentaries out there if i wanna see like wolves and lions and antelope and crocodiles
ITS OKAY I GUESS. it looks pretty. if anything i hope it is just the beginning of more beautiful (and hopefully more accurate) prehistoric documentaries..

Another redrawing. The first My Little Pony fan art I ever drew. Original from 2012 for comparison below. Little did I know I'd still be at this 8 years later...
