On the 29th of July, ten years ago, f(x) released their second studio album, Pink Tape.
Tumblr media
The album peaked at the number one position on multiple music charts internationally including Billboard's World Albums and South Korea's Gaon charts.
youtube
Pink Tape garnered widespread critical acclaim; the album was the only K-pop album to be featured on US music channel Fuse's "41 Best Albums of 2013" and was named the "Greatest K-pop Album of the 2010s" by Billboard. "Rum Pum Pum Pum" was ranked at number 59 on Billboard's "100 Greatest Girl Group Songs of All Time" list. In a panel of 47 music and pop culture critics organized by The Hankyoreh and Melon, it was ranked at number 96 in their list of the Top 100 Korean Albums of All Time, making it the only album by an idol group to make the list.

My Review of A Dream of Splendor / 梦华录
Tumblr media
A Dream of Splendor tells the story of three women of mixed pasts who travel to the capital and open a teahouse. Zhao Pan’er (Liu Yifei) is a former courtesan with experience in the tea business, Song Yinzhang (Lin Yun) is a current courtesan and talented musician, and Sun Sanniang (Liu Yan) is a divorced woman with culinary talents. They are joined by the male lead, Gu Qianfan (Chen Xiao) who is an intelligence officer from a powerful family.
This is a woman-centric story. You see the ugliness of the patriarchy, but you also see women finding ways to protect themselves by helping each other. It’s nice to see this in an idol historical drama, because most idol historicals gloss over or even romanticize the historical gender dynamics.
However, the drama doesn’t live up to its marketing about female empowerment. The female lead is primarily empowered by the male lead, and the male lead is empowered by his father. Furthermore, the drama felt the need to purify the female lead by emphasizing her virginity?? As a former courtesan who later had a three-year-relationship with another man, there is no reason (and no need!) for her to be a virgin. In a drama that seeks to humanize an “impure” class of women, it feels deeply wrong to see this kind of purification.
Honestly, the writing was mediocre. The story is full of plot holes and absurdities. The storyline peaks very early, so there are large stretches of the plot that feel boring or poorly organized. And when the characters face problems, those problems get resolved by unrealistic solutions (or a man showing up to save the day) that don’t really challenge the characters or help them grow.
The level of acting within the cast is mixed. Chen Xiao is generally a pretty good actor, and while I don’t think this is his best performance, he’s still great to watch. Liu Yifei seems to have improved a bit, but her acting still isn’t great. She still struggles to convey complex emotions, and during moments when she’s being a bit more expressive, her gestures and reactions look quite unnatural. I was really impressed by Liu Yan’s acting, and I liked her character too. Meanwhile. Lin Yun is probably the weakest link.
That being said, Liu Yifei and Lin Yun are both very pretty so I guess it makes up a bit for the weak acting? The courtesan Zhang Hao Hao is beautiful too.
A note on the chemistry between Liu Yifei and Chen Xiao: honestly, Chen Xiao would have chemistry with a potato, so of course the chemistry here is good. But tbh I also watched Simmer Down recently, and I found Chen Xiao’s chemistry with Wang Xiaochen in Simmer Down to be better than his chemistry with Liu Yifei in A Dream of Splendor.... (And it sucks because Wang Xiaochen’s character in Simmer Down is a total dud lol)
The sets and filming locations are beautiful to look at. It’s not the same few locations that you see in every historical drama, so the change of scenery is nice.
Sloppy cinematography warning: the choice of shots seemed amateurish at times.
A Dream of Splendor was a drama that I had been patiently waiting for, but it ended up being a little disappointing. I do think it’s a pleasant drama if you approach it as an unserious idol historical. Its biggest strength is the nice visuals, from the people to the sets. The female friendships are lovely too. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have very good writing, nor does it deliver outstanding acting. But depending on what you care about, the visuals might be enough for you.

Almost Famous. 5
Story: 6
Acting: 8
Chemistry: 7
Comparable to: Heartstrings (kdrama) ; Dream High (kdrama)
At first glance the drama doesn’t seem to be all that bad. It’s cliche predictable and cheesy, yes, but so is half of all the other dramas that are out there. I mean heck, It doesn’t take much to get me to watch whatever before I switch to something different. In this case the acting is sort of mediocre and the storyline is ‘meh’ up till episode 7. Didn’t bother me one bit. It wasn’t until after that episode everything went topsy turvey for me. Stories weren’t making sense in the the sense where in one scene there’s a conflict between characters and immediately after in the next scene after making such a great deal over a situation and not even addressing it, boom everything is back to normal. Friendships are mended, relationships are back to ‘platonic’ handholding. Nonetheless the first half isn’t quite that bad. Second half I’ll admit it’s oofing hard to get through but that’s where the ‘multiple couples’ storylines take off. So…..🤷‍♀️

Ultimate Ship Challenge ✳ 1/10 Ships
↳ I thought I just owed a life to my best friend. But I owe her a love worth sixty thousand years. Maybe more than sixty thousand years. Yuemi was gone. No one knew what she had done, loved and sacrificed. It was like Yuemi’s precious wine that had been sealed in Tianqi’s temple in the dust all these years. He hadn’t drunk a single sip for so many years.
