i think learning about wilma and leonie kind of started sprotte's own sexuality crisis. just the way that she keeps thinking about it and thinks things like „was, wenn mir das passiert wäre?“
something about Wilma being a lesbian fixiert Sprotte, and i’m gonna take that as what i want it to be
Trude…
you know. leaving everything else (her crush on melanie, her quotes about leonie) aside - i believe a lot of what trude says to wilma about liking girls is self projection.
i really agree with @all-chickens-are-trans' interpretation, that melanie is a very repressed bisexual who’s projecting her own internalized homophobia onto wilma.
„über mich sollen sie nicht so reden.“
you know.
over all, my general headcanons (when it comes to orientation) can be summed up by the scene where they talk about leonie. (scene of all time)
melanie is being derogatory. see above
trude is… kind of saying things without too much thought, tbh. She had an obvious crush on melanie, and she never hid her adoration, and in the same way she just kind of says things like „wenn ich lesbisch wär, würd ich mich auf der stelle in leonie verlieben“ (trude that is not a straight thing to say)
she doesn’t have it figured out, yet.
(but she sure is saying words)
kind of just. no filter.
Especially in their conversation at Wilma’s house.
„aber man sagt doch, mädchen haben das manchmal. dass sie sich in andere mädchen verlieben. und dass das nichts bedeutet“
könnte mir gut vorstellen, dass das etwas ist, was trude sich manchmal selber so sagt
frieda is definitely not new to this.
she knows about queerness, she’s familiar with it. i’m pretty sure she’s aware of her own queerness, even if she doesn’t talk about it openly.
and sprotte is having her own internal crisis, as stated above
wilma i think has known for a while.
i don’t think she knew in „glück der erde“, but maybe she was starting to have a feeling (thinking of that scene where melanie says „ach nein, wilma ist ja immun gegen jungs.“ and wilma replies „na, wenn sich das ändern sollte, werd ich’s dir bestimmt nicht erzählen“)
in general, there were signs (sprotte thinking about how all the other hühner have had a boyfriend except for her. and wilma, but wilma is different)
just the way that wilma talks about being a lesbian in their conversation in her room.
yeah, she’s known for a while, or at least she had a feeling. and she tried to like boys, she really did, but it didn’t work. and then she fell for leonie

“Chief among these was the eighteen-year-old Anne de Pisseleu d’Heilly, whom Francis first encountered in March 1526. She had arrived at court in 1522 aged fourteen; the daughter of a Picardy nobleman, the Seigneur de Pisseleu – a name meaning ‘worse than wolf’ – she understood the milieu that she inhabited. Her position as a junior lady-in-waiting in Louise’s household gave her access to the most important person in the kingdom both before and during the regency, as well as a great deal of influence. It helped her cause that Louise was desperate to oust Françoise de Foix, Madame de Châteaubriand, and have Anne succeed her as the king’s acknowledged mistress; Louise detested Françoise for her open meddling in her son’s affairs and the influence she had over the king. Instead, she desired a more malleable companion for her son. Anne was a blossoming young beauty, with flowing golden hair and a voluptuous figure, but she was no innocent.”

Rumours that he was murdered by Philip are no more than romantic fiction; a more plausible explanation is that the Infante died of pneumonia as a result of his bizarre habit of sleeping totally naked on a huge block ice in order to keep cool during the summer months.

Francis I: The Maker of Modern France by Leonie Freida
Francis I: The Maker of Modern France
Leonie Frieda
Audio / Audible
As a well known Tudor-phile I made the very conscious decision to start reading books that were adjacent to,  related to, and/or impacted Tudor era histories. Francis I seemed like a natural place to start, seeing that he was the natural rival of England’s King Henry VIII.
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. This is not the first book by Frieda I have listened to and it followed much of the same style as Frieda’s other books which made it easy to follow. I will admit that sometimes I had a hard time following along sometimes. Names and dates were often referenced out of chronological order, but with the purpose of adding context to another date, event, or person. Since I don’t have the firmest grasp on French history this was a little jumbled to me since I kept trying to place French events and people in context to a very niche set of English events and people. I am all of my own problems when it comes to historical context.
Having never really done a deep dive into anything French this was a refreshing read. The political intrigues, war, and politics were all there, but really only in reference to how they related to Francis specifically.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a place to start in Renaissance France. This book creates a great foundation for the future “why” of what became of France.

How Much of The Serpent Queen Is Based on Real History?
How Much of The Serpent Queen Is Based on Real History?
Catherine de’ Medici has been depicted as The Black Queen in a number of different period dramas, with each take tending to be more extreme on her life and choices than the other. Starz’s The Serpent Queen, based on the book Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France by Leonie Frieda, looks at the oft-misrepresented Queen of France from a fresh perspective. Was Catherine de’ Medici really…

Francis and Suleiman
When Suleiman led an attack on the Habsburg stronghold of Vienna in 1529, he wished for a sympathetic ally within western Europe who might be interested in forming a partnership against the loathed Holy Roman Empire. Francis therefore found himself treading the line between public adherence to his Christian faith, both celebrating the Turks’ retreat from Vienna in October 1529 and continuing underhand dealings. If pushed, he might have claimed that his interest lay in protecting Christians in eastern Europe, but this would simply have been a ruse. Informal talks took place between the French and the Ottomans during 1530 and 1531 which came to the attention of many throughout Europe. Thomas Cromwell remarked that no Christian scruple would deter Francis from bringing the Turk and the devil into the heart of Christendom, if it would ultimately enable him to recapture Milan.
This was an exaggeration, but only barely. As Francis stated to the Venetian envoy Giustinian in March 1531, ‘I cannot deny that I keenly wish to see the Turk powerful and ready for war, not for himself – for he is an infidel and we are all Christians – but to weaken the power of the emperor, to compel him to make major expenses, and to reassure all the other governments who are opposed to such a formidable enemy.’  Thus, as Francis made much of allying himself with the pope against the infidel, he continued sending his ambassadors to meet with Suleiman, at a time when intelligence suggested that the sultan was preparing to attack Habsburg territories in central Europe. Francis contemplated his options, knowing that, while a Turkish assault of that nature would benefit him in the short term, it would also solidify Habsburg support. He therefore sought an alternative strategy.
When the news came that Suleiman was planning another attack on Austria, Francis was ready with his alternative scheme of an Ottoman invasion of Italy. The ideal outcome for the French king would have been for Suleiman to attack Charles V within Italy, weakening the emperor to the point where Francis would have been able to invade, with guaranteed success, and to present himself as a defender of the Christian faith into the bargain. But the Ottoman army was met with defeat, Charles V made a triumphal entry into Vienna at the head of his army in September 1532, and the plot’s details were common knowledge. As a result, Francis’s claims to be regarded as ‘The Most Christian King’ could now justifiably be mocked by his enemies, who instead made much of his alliance with the dreaded Turk and now called him ‘The Executioner of Christendom’.

Poisoner, despot, necromancer -- the dark legend of Catherine de Medici is centuries old. In this critically hailed biography, Leonie Frieda reclaims the story of this unjustly maligned queen to reveal a skilled ruler battling extraordinary political and personal odds -- from a troubled childhood in Florence to her marriage to Henry, son of King Francis I of France; from her transformation of French culture to her fight to protect her throne and her sons' birthright. Based on thousands of private letters, it is a remarkable account of one of the most influential women ever to wear a crown.
