The Royal Diaries
Growing up, born in the early 90’s, my absolute favorite book were The Royal Diaries series from Scholastic. These books were a spinoff from the Dear America books (which I also read). They followed the middle age/teenage years of historically important royal women. To be honest, my obsession with monarchies and my interest in history (and my history degree) can be firmly traced from this series.…

Book used for research: Maya Cultural Heritage, How Archaeologists and Indigenous Communities Engage the Past by Patricia A. McAnany - contributions by Sarah M. Rowe
Situated at the intersection of cultural heritage and local community, this book enlarges our understanding of the Indigenous peoples of southern México and northern Central America who became detached from “the ancient Maya” through colonialism, government actions, and early twentieth-century anthropological and archaeological research. Through grass-roots heritage programs, local communities are reconnecting with a much valorized but distant past.
Maya Cultural Heritage explores how community programs conceived and implemented in a collaborative style are changing the relationship among, archaeological practice, the objects of archaeological study, and contemporary ethnolinguistic Mayan communities. Rather than simply describing Maya sites, McAnany concentrates on the dialogue nurtured by these participatory heritage programs, the new “heritage-scapes” they foster, and how the diverse Maya communities of today relate to those of the past.

Cotton Candy Skies, 2022 Cartagena de Indias, Colombia PT6 of the Colombia Journals It was my last full day in Colombia, my last sunset. And so we took ourselves to the viewpoint that’s said to have Cartagena’s best sunset. My mind not yet ready to process the idea of leaving this place that had brought me so much joy over the weeks. As we took it all in, the mixture of visitors pushing themselves to the front of the wall to get their best selfie, the ladies from Palenque rushing to be in every photo opp, and me just reflecting on my journey over the past weeks, I saw this guy pushing his way through the crowds. A play of colours so beautiful, it was the perfect send-off. Day five!
Yohl Ik’nal was ruler of the Maya city state of Palenque from 583 to 604.  Her dynasty would see two female rulers: herself, and her probable daughter or granddaughter Sak K’uk.  Palenque was one of the greatest of the classical Maya states, known for its architecture and art as well as military strength.  During her reign, Palenque lost a major battle to their rival, Calakmul, and were forced to pay tribute, but Yohl Ik’nal managed to hold on to her life and throne - an accomplishment in and of itself. Palenque struck back soon after, regaining its position as a major Maya power.
Yohl Ik’nal was the earliest known Maya queen regnant.  Her burial place is unknown, but multiple images of her adorn the famous tomb and sarcophagus of her best-known descendant, Kʼinich Janaabʼ Pakal, also known as Pacal the Great, who would lead Palenque into its golden age.

Lady of Palenque: Flower of Bacal, by Anna Kirwan. I took Spanish for all seven years of my secondary education and learned a lot about the Aztec empire, but little about the other early civilizations of what is now Latin America, including the Mayans.
The story is a bit hard to follow because there are so many characters and most have long names or titles, like hers. So I am not surprised that they called her “Lady” on the cover. Though Palenque and Bacal are two names for the same area, so it’s a little redundant.
Small note- the neon pink used for the cover is very bright IRL so those with photosensitivity might not want to look at it too long.
Goodreads star rating: 2/5

Native American History Month / Figures ➵ Kʼinich Janaab Pakal I
Born March 603,  Kʼinich Janaab Pakal “Pakal the Great”, was the Prince of the City Palenque, in present-day Chiapas, at a particularly violent time. His Kingdom was continuously at war with others, namely Kaan, throughout his youth, at which many of his family died. His family were forced to flee the City when Palenque became too dangerous and damaged by war with Kaan, and they found refuge in Tortuguero in 612 under the leadership of Ik’ Muuy Mawaan I. However, Pakal and his family returned to Palenque, where, At the young age of 12, Pakal was crowned as King by his mother. He was crowned so under his mother’s arranged pact with surrounding clans that, should he be crowned, he would become the divine ruler, and there would be no strife between the Kingdoms. His coronation not only now confirmed him as a ruler of Palenque, but its spiritual leader and protector, and the leader of the military order of Palenque. His parents served as his advisors for the rest of their lives. Pakal married Lady Tzʼakbu Ajaw and had three sons, & was succeeded by his son, Kʼinich Kan Bahlam II. Pakal’s reign and life is remembered most notably by his contributions to construction projects, rebuilding of Palenque, and monuments, including aqueducts (some of which still work today) and the Palenque Palace. While Pakal’s leadership was largely successful, his Kingdom was never totally at peace, yet is still marked as the fifth longest confirmed reign in History.  After his death, Pakal was deified and was said to communicate with his descendants.

Is there Royal Diaries CC you have done or could recommend? Thank you so much for your work.
I am not aware of any CC that is directly related to the Royal Diaries. However, that is something I am willing to consider in the future.
Until then, I have compiled a masterlist of CC that could work for various characters.
Didn't find anything that suggested Cleopatra's chiton, the Lady of Ch'iao Kuo, Lady of Palenque, Anacaona, Mary's traditional Scottish, Nzingha, or Weetamoo.
