“Hydra’s Pinwheel” by Peter Ward.
Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille first observed what later became known as the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy on 23 February 1752 from the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. This image, taken exactly 270 years later, combines a deep set of H-alpha exposures along with color data to highlight the ruby-like star-forming regions of this beautiful barred spiral galaxy.

Candle in the Dark
Jastes Verdan | Civitrecce | Present Night
Civitrecce soars and dives across its coastline in equal measure.
The sea laps at its edges, docks and platforms straying onto the sands and spidering across the water, carefully maintained by a wide array of maintenance droids.
To one of the many spaceships flying over the glass and steel metropolis, it is a glittering mass of lights visible even from beyond the atmosphere as they decelerate for landing in its port.
To passing boats, the city shines as a beacon in the dark, its automated lighthouses welcoming their much-needed goods and money to spend on its vast collection of businesses.
It was nearly destroyed not long ago.
Monster attacks, natural disasters, technological failures. Each swept through the city in its turn, leaving its mark on its buildings and trolls. For a time, the QPIN corporation offered desperately needed aid - aid the Fleet offered only minimally - to get its hooks deeper into the city.
One of Civitrecce’s main exports is its high quality helmstrolls and the technicians who maintain them.
It is one of the engines that powers the empire’s ever-expanding galactic conquest.
Some asked, in light of this, why the fleet did not assist its people more in the wake of all it suffered.
The reasons were many. The politics were complex.
Fundamentally: there are always more lowbloods.
The Civitrecce Resistance - most of them, at least - gathered on old chairs and beanbags around an equally old television, with one or two also hanging off the back of the fairly beaten-up couch.
The assembled trolls - a few dozen, all ages and castes from maroon to olive - were only half-watching the show.
The real entertainment was the man who laid on the couch, one arm hanging off its side as he stared intently at the cooking competition occurring onscreen.
Jastes’s eye twitched as a chef used completely the wrong spice for a dish, and he covered his face with a hand as the woman continued to then mangle her poor zucchinis into oblivion.
“Oooh, that’s not good!” Called Abbeth, a six sweep old yellowblood boy with a missing eye and ear. “He’s starting to lose hope!”
“Ten caegers it’s the next one who makes him fall off the couch.” Chipped in an eight sweep old brownblood girl, Edri.
“Shit, that’s just one hand - wait til he has both on his face, then I’ll start betting.” This time it was Xineck, the ten sweep old maroon’s voice dry and pointed.
The resistance leader didn’t mind his groups chatter; this had been a weekly activity for the past half-sweep or so, and while he’d been surprised by its popularity, he didn’t have anything against their spectating. Or…betting, which he found a little more bizarre, but it seemed to be fun for them.
Wait, what was the next chef doing?
No. He couldn’t stand this. That was not how you prepared eggplant in any culture. No.
He put another hand to his face and sighed softly. A flurry of arguing and bets broke out among several of the resistance.
He did keep watching through his fingers, just to see if there was anything of value to be found in the next contestant. He didn’t quite believe that was possible.
Well, they weren’t doing anything blatantly wrong at least, no crimes against cookware or ingredients. But he didn’t shift his hands.
The others debated in whispers if he would crack soon or not, and the ones who had held out were the smart money, because when the yellowblood saw someone burn a perfectly good bunch of green beans he finally let himself roll off the couch into the floor and closed his eyes, facedown on the cool old tile.
He groaned softly for a moment as the others made each other make good on bets or exclaimed at the antics of the amateur chefs themselves, and then pushed himself up and turned the TV off with its scuffed remote, which usually had a few buttons stuck.
“That’s it for tonight, everyone. Come back next week, if you dare.” Jastes said dryly, but with a hint of humor; where else would they be? As long as they were alive, they’d almost certainly come.
Most of them had almost nowhere else to go, unfortunately.
He got some looks for that. He shrugged apologetically; Xineck wasn’t wrong that he’d always been bad at being funny. Maybe if he kept trying he’d get it right some night.
“It’s meeting time now.” He added. “Do whatever you need to do, but be back in five minutes.”
Trolls walked off to use the restroom, grab a snack or drink, check their phones, but they were all dutifully gathered at the end of the break.
Jastes walked over to a large wooden chair - a rarity in the city - that some of the younger trolls had decorated with ribbons several weeks ago. He carefully made sure to not rip them when he sat down.
“We now know Chimer Latrai is serious about converting Starsight Industries from helm power to other sources of energy. I don’t have to tell you all how important that is.” Jastes said, tone solemnly earnest.
“She may not be the most influential of her caste, but she’s still fuchsia. If she succeeds, others will follow. The factory suffered a hack from its former owner while I was there - possibly because he was searching for me, I’m still looking into it - and I’m sure he won’t be the last.” Said Jastes, grim but determined.
“There are plenty of people who want to see her fail and will do worse. That’s where we come in. Questions?”
He could not have failed to notice the disapproving and worried looks of his group and sure enough, as soon as he paused, several hands shot up.
“Yes, Edri?” He asked the brownblood politely.
“I hate helming as much as the rest of us.” She said, hesitant. “But is this possible? Everyone knows it’s the strongest source of power the empire has. Some of us have our own ports.”
Jastes nodded; it was a fair question. The imperial education system naturally presented helm power as the best option available and ignored other sources. He only knew more than the average lowblood thanks to getting his hands on caste-locked materials normally restricted to trolls cerulean and higher.
“Helming has several advantages over other energy sources.” He said. “It also has several disadvantages. Even with newer, more streamlined columns, yellow helm-grade psiionics tend to last maybe fifty sweeps; sometimes longer, depending on the ship and its activity level, the type, all sorts of things…but the maintenance also gets heavier and more complex as time goes on and the troll’s body wears out.
It’s a diminishing return for all but the strongest helms, because the organic parts are necessary to produce psiionic power, but they require very specialized tech to sustain them. Solar-powered ships aren’t as fast, but they’re far more reliable in the long run, and they don’t need to be tailored for a psiionic’s individual powers.”
He could clearly see that some of the resistance looked a bit bored - especially the younger members - and he tried not to let his annoyance show. No, this wasn’t the most exciting stuff in the world, but ignorance of it was how the empire controlled them.
“So it’s possible, even if it won’t be easy.” He said firmly. “That’s why we’ll protect the place while it changes over.”
Shuffling and muttering spread throughout the group until Jastes quelled them all with a psiionic-green warning look. Silence fell instantly.
“Say your problems to my face.” He said calmly, but with the complete expectation of obedience.
“Why does a fuchsia need our help?” One troll complained. “She has more than enough guards. Everyone knows that thing works for her.”
Jastes rolled his eyes. “We don’t technically have proof, but yes, it’s likely the thing in the red coat is her jade guard, and the cerulean one is also quite dangerous. But that’s two trolls - or otherwise - and her ordinary security team, which isn’t that big. She keeps her staff small, so she can pay them properly.”
The yellowblood took a breath, then tried a different tack, a slight smile creeping across his narrow face.
“Of course, if you don’t want to sabotage every gang and corporation who wants to try something, I guess I understand…”
Protests broke out and Jastes laughed softly.
“That’s what I thought.” He said with amusement. “If anyone wants to read anything further, check the library registry. There’s audiobooks too, and models. If you want anything else, let me know. Any more questions?”
“What are we going to be doing?” Piped up Abbeth nervously.
Jastes managed to not wince. The young yellowblood always asked that. Jastes had had to shut him down every time he asked to go on a field mission. That missing ear and eye of his…
“More reconnaissance at first.” He answered. “We need to know the extent of her changes, her trade channels, how she’s dealing with fleet. Then we can figure out how to make sure the competition doesn’t try any sabotage by giving them their own problems to deal with. It’s been too long since we rescued helms.”
Everyone grinned.
“Where the hell will they be going?” Grunted Xineck. “Our last drop-off point got busted, or did you forget?”
“We have a new contact.” Said Jastes evenly. “They think we’re a gang, as usual.”
Much of the resistance nodded, though with unhappy expressions. That was how they hid in plain sight; pretending to be another of the city’s many gangs jostling for power, resources, and money - supposedly from selling stolen or rogue helms, in this case.
Unfortunately such business could also lead to turf wars, which were annoying, but he’d rather deal with those than imperial attention. It would have looked strange if they didn’t pick fights or do deals like the others.
It suited the empire to have its criminals at each others’ throats, rather than theirs.
“Oh boy, more people who think we’re huge assholes.” Groaned the maroon. A few trolls muttered in agreement.
Jastes sighed.
“Pretending we’re trying to make a profit is an easy way to keep the empire off our scent. Do I have to remind everyone what happened when Coloth nearly found us?”
The entire resistance shuffled uncomfortably.
Their leader’s expression turned both grim and sympathetic.
“I know it’s not fun.” He said more softly. “I don’t like how they look at us either. But we need the money to keep our own aid funded. How many of you had to be treated for something when you came? How many of your quadrants and friends?”
Several trolls looked away uncomfortably. One of the services the resistance offered was better medical and biotech care than any lowblood could usually afford otherwise. Port rot, implant issues, injuries or illnesses their stipend couldn’t handle the expenses for…with the dangerous jobs several of them had, nearly all of them had needed the help at least once.
Jastes still hated it, and he didn’t blame his people for hating it either. The look of betrayal in the helms’ eyes as they realized they were being sold again, even if it was to freedom…it wrenched at him.
But if they were exposed - a risk even from someone they were helping - they were worse than dead.
He clapped his hands, trying to clear the gloomy atmosphere.
“Why don’t we make dinner? Who wants to help prep?”
Several hands shot up, especially from the younger trolls.
Jastes chuckled and picked a few - including Abbeth - and let them chatter and bustle around him as he walked to the kitchen, glad he could at least offer a bit of time away from their worries.
Now he just had to make one more very important decision: what to cook.

A new scientific report has debunked astrology claims that Saturn is moving in Pisces in March 2023 after several outlets reported about the same event. Here’s the chart from Philadelphia, Home of the Philadelphia Flower Show. This years theme is Philly goes Electric for Ben Franklin . As you can see on the chart Saturn is at 00 Pisces 10 today March 8, 2023 but New York Post, reports this is…

Hello good fellows! If I may ask, could you tell us some stuff about your own Clusters?
Absolutely! I’ll start with myself (Lark) and then try to force Paris to answer the next question asked, since that was about his own Cluster. :D
As the first letter of my name suggestions, I was born to the Lacaille cluster! My parents roamed in a small group of four and loved to teach me of alchemy. We always carried vials and pouches that we collected spell components within, so that we could later brew potions that heighten our magic. I guess alchemy would be the defining trait of my cluster, as I have very rarely seen other clusters attempt to craft potions and script spell scrolls.
We Lacaille also stand out from the others through our willingness to embrace the changing times. The city sorcerers have crafted some wonderful inventions, so I don’t see why we should refrain from using them ourselves! Like this cellular phone, for example - it is now much easier to research where I could find spell components, or to contact friends of mine who also own phones.
I do remember, once, that a city sorcerer I spoke to at the market place referred to my parents appearance as “cottagecore steampunk”. I still don’t quite understand what that means, but it sounds cool!
Speaking of my parents, two of my parents were born to and remain Lacaille, but the other two switched over to Lacaille from their original clusters. My dad came from the Orion cluster, whilst my Mapa came from the Bayer cluster. I plan to try and visit my parents to interview them about their old clusters, so keep an eye on this blog for that! Until then, I’ll say that having influence from three different clusters as a child has left me feeling... open, I suppose? I call myself a “Lacaille drifter”, because although I feel most tied to the Lacaille, I would happily join Orion and Bayer clusters as if I had always been a part of them. I suppose it’s why I’m so eager to document my culture: I already embody three unique points of view of my people, so why not discover all of the other viewpoints too?
Ah, apologies, I have gone on for quite a while! I do hope this has given you somewhat of an insight into my Lacaille heritage! Time for me to go and grab Paris and try to drag some answers out of him. :D

Fun facts about “Kingdom of Wishes” characters
I’m bored, so have some random facts about the characters from my wish rewrite!
Tumblr media
Random picture just cause I like to have eye catching pics as “thumbnails” for my blogs and also I can totally see my version of Asha making this pose.
Anyway, if you haven’t read my Kingdom of Wishes- A Wish Rewrite then this post might not make much sense, feel free to read it anyway though, there’s no spoilers.
On to the fun facts!
Asha✨
Asha sometimes sits hunched over when she's drawing. Her friends constantly have to remind her to keep her back straight otherwise she'll get a bad posture.
After Simon gave away his wish and became… Well, sleepy, she had to become the voice of reason in their group, the big sister in a way, since she was now the eldest. She wasn’t that good at leading before though so she left most of it to Dahlia.
Asha's favorite color is purple, obviously, and she dresses in purple for her birthday, however, her second favorite color that she also wears often is orange.
She's not very good interacting with kids, believe it or not, of course she likes kids, but she has a hard time knowing how to play with them.
Asha did meet the king in person ONCE before her 18th birthday… I’ll leave it at that.
Aster 💫
Aster is canonically the star Lacaille 8760
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Picked this one because it looks like he’s boxed up in the middle of other brighter stars that make up the Microscope constellation, and yeah there is a microscope constellation and it’s straight up just a square. He’s one of the nearest stars to the Sun, at about 12.9 light-years' distance, however his light is so faint it’s almost impossible to see with the naked eye.
2. Aster’s eyes can see what people desire, more clearly if he holds the person’s hand, like an empath, but even without touching the person he can see what they want, but only if he focus, and the way he sees it is like words surrounding the person.
3. I said this once in a ask but I’ll say it again, I see Aster and Rapunzel’s powers as connected, not that all Disney movies are connected with KOW, but Tangled at least is pretty close. So, Rapunzel got her powers from a sun drop, right? Well, the sun is a star, we can assume she has star powers. My point is that if Aster was to sing the Rapunzel’s healing song they’d glow and heal any injured person around, and make the elderly younger, Magnifico sure didn’t know that though because if he did he’d just do what Gothel did and lock Aster up.
4. Aster could hear Asha reading stories with Sabino every night, and that’s one of the many ways they became interested in human culture.
5. Aster often annoyed some stars by complaining that their constellations didn’t look like what humans called them as, like the Cetus constellation doesn’t look like a sea monster, or the Leo constellation didn’t look like a lion, even though the stars had no control over how humans saw them as and they couldn’t change their positions in the sky.
Magnifico 🫧
Magnifico could look younger if he drank his wife's rejuvenating potions, but they taste horrible and every time she drinks them (Twice a year) she screams in agony like her insides are burning, only to then turn to him with a smile and ask "Want some, my love?" and he just replies with "... Thanks dear, but I think I'll stick with my skincare routine."
Most of his "passionate king" persona he got from copying his brother's mannerisms, after all, his father always said he should be more like his little brother.
He kinda hates that little hair strand coming out on his forehead, but no matter how much hair gel he applies on it, the hair strand always comes back... Also his brother had an identical one.
Kings and queens in Rosas usually don't wear crowns, as the culture is for them to feel close to the people, not above them. However, Magnifico gifted Amaya with a tiara, that has a red garnet on her forehead, red garnets are associated with love, passion, and desire, but it has also been known to represent other things such as courage, strength, and protection. Basically he gave her a lucky charm. He also gave her the sash with the drawing of a moon she wears on her waist, it used to be his when he was a prince.
I can’t for the life of me decide which one of these Magnifico would wear to sleep:
Tumblr media
I can see him wearing either of them. Same for Amaya.
Amaya 👑
1.Amaya pretty much had to teach Magnifico how to be a likable figure. I implied it a little bit in the story with Magnifico saying stuff like “Well, I did have the best teacher” to Amaya after he made a little acting scene on chapter “When Blue Turns Green”. Point is, before meeting her Magnus was pretty much an antisocial, reclusive prince that avoided even being seen in public. For him to become the larger than life, enthusiastic king we know in the story he and Amaya had to practice his social skills a lot, think of it like Belle teaching the Beast proper manners, Amaya changed him… But for the worst.
Tumblr media
2.Like I explained on her backstory, Amaya is from Greece, and she committed some very serious crimes over there. So every time Rosas receives visitors from Greece Amaya puts on the hood of her cloak over her head during the wish ceremonies. It’s kinda funny, any other wish ceremony she looks normal, but whenever Greek people are around she goes:
Tumblr media
3.I imagine some fun shenanigans must have happened over the years with Amaya’s potions going wrong, like she tests it on a rat and it turns into a giant rat running around the castle, or she mislabels the potions and drinks one that turns her into a worm 🐛 so Magnifico gotta prove he’d love her even if she was a worn and turn her back to normal.
4.Amaya is kinda like the moon in this story, because the moon doesn’t shine every night, in some phases the moon is barely visible, just like how Amaya is most of the time more in the background while Magnifico shines like the sun, but, when it IS her time to shine, just like a full moon, she outshines Magnifico himself.
5.She likes to feel comfy, she often walks around the castle with no shoes on most of the time but no one can tell because of her long dress.
Aaaand that’s all I got, hope you guys like this additional content, might inspire some fun asks hehe 😜
Thank You For Reading!
