26. Forgotten hero everyone should know about
This could have been a perfect occasion to talk about Claude-Antoine Prieur again, but given that I plan to devote him many future posts on my blog, I thought it would have been more appropriate to use this ask to share my knowledge about an important and unfortunately still rather unknown STEM personality, who truly inspired me when I was a young student. I'm referring to Sophie Germain.

Born in Paris in 1776, Sophie was one of the rare mathematiciennes of the 18th-19th century. She had her first approach with mathematics during the days of the storming of the Bastille, when it was too dangerous for a young 13 years old girl to go outside. To pass the time, she turned to her father's library and a book named "Histoire des mathématiques" by Jean-Étienne Montucla captured her interest. The story of Archimedes narrated in the book fascinated her deeply, eventually leading her to start studying mathematics on her own through the works by famous mathematicians like Euler, Newton, Cousin. Her interest and dedication to the discipline was so strong, that during winter, when her parents denied her warm clothes and a fire in her bedroom to prevent her from studying - maths was not considered appropriate for a girl - she kept doing it anyway despite the cold. When the Polytechnic school opened in 1794, women couldn't attend, but the policy of the school allowed to everyone, who asked for them, notes of the lectures. She requested them under the pseudonym of Antoine-Auguste Le Blanc, a former student who had dropped out. Given that one was expected to send written observations about the lectures - a sort of homework - Germain wrote and sent hers to Lagrange, one of the teachers. The latter was so positively impressed by her essays that requested a meeting with the brilliant student LeBlanc, who unexpectedly had improved so much. She was forced to reveal her identity. Lagrange was pleasantly surprised to realize Monsieur Le Blanc was in reality a young and talented woman and decided to support her, becoming her mentor.
Her most noteworthy contribution to mathematics was in number theory, where she proved a special case of the last Fermat's Theorem, one of the hardest mathematical theorems to prove and whose final proof was actually found in 1994. Other notable works of hers include treatises on elastic surfaces, one of which, "Recherches sur la théorie des surfaces élastiques", awarded her a prize from the Paris Academy of Science in 1816. Although she often faced prejudice for being a woman, Germain was praised and also supported by reputed and famous mathematicians of the time like the above mentioned Lagrande, Legendre, who thanks to her work of the Fermat's theorem was able to prove it for another special case; Cousin himself, Fourier, who managed to grant her the permission to follow the sittings held at the Academy and last, but obviously not least, Gauss, who after Germain's death advocated for giving her an honorary degree in mathematics.

Le corsage ouvert en cœur à très longue pointe est entièrement bordé de cygne, et terminé par un flot de ruban de velours cerise. La gausse jupe est recouverte de 4 volants de dentelle blanche sur transparent rose. Bas de soie rose; souliers de satin rose et bouffettes de dentelle. Coiffure, plumes blanches.

Besides that, I disagree. For instance, you talk about group theory, as a late 19th century concept, but already (abelian) groups are noticed by eg Kummer/Dedekind type algebraic number theory, in the mid-19th century, following Gauss’s earlier work on composition laws.
Other examples to be included are (1) Riemann surface theory/covering spaces, the direct precursor to turn of the 20th century algebraic topology a la Poincare, and (2) calculus of variations, 18th century and still exceedingly active in various guises.
Frankly, the nascent developing conversation seems misguided to me. The question must be refined. Of course the subjects alluded to above can be described in “20th century” terminology, but part of developing that terminology was to organize previous efforts.

So, ok, there's a sense in which many of these ideas existed in a different guise before they were formalized in the modern way. But the streamlining of all these messy, complex-seeming results from disparate parts of math into a single coherent set of frameworks is itself a useful development, it makes math easier, and these frameworks are part of what make modern math what it is. Modern mathematicians use them to fruitfully to do their job. Everything makes reference to groups, to topological spaces, to vector spaces, and so on.
The proto-topology of the nineteenth century contains in a sort of Platonic way "the same ideas" as the topology-per-se of today, but in terms of the ability to grab a problem and fruitfully throw topology techniques at it, they are not the same. The framing, the streamlining, the packaging—these are parts of the tool. In fact, you could argue that it's these very things that make all of mathematics powerful in the first place. It's not really the case, I think, that you could usefully frame the Zariski topology in terms of nineteenth century ideas about spaces. Maybe you could. But what we have today is much more powerful for that.

Texte : Sophie Germain, philosophe et mathématicienne, née à Paris en 1776, est morte dans cette maison le 27 juin 1831
Quelques précisions : Sophie Germain (1776-1831) est une mathématicienne, physicienne et philosophe française. Elle se forme aux mathématiques en autodidacte, étudiant les travaux des plus grands mathématiciens de son temps comme Leonhard Euler ou Carl Friedrich Gauss. Elle correspondra d'ailleurs avec ce dernier, et avec d'autres figures scientifiques comme Joseph-Louis Lagrange, en se faisant passer pour un homme, sa féminité étant un obstacle à sa carrière scientifique. Une fois la supercherie dévoilée, elle sera toutefois reconnue comme mathématicienne, même si elle devra faire face à une opposition vis-à-vis de son sexe jusqu'à sa mort (son certificat de décès la décrit d'ailleurs comme rentière et non scientifique). Elle mène et publie nombre de travaux remarquables, s'intéressant à la théorie des nombres et au problème des surfaces vibrantes, proposant des travaux qui attirent l'attention (et parfois l'inimitié) de nombre de ses pairs, en particulier Adrien-Marie Legendre, son mentor. Atteinte d'un cancer du sein, elle meurt en 1831. Son nom est donné à de nombreux établissements scolaires.

Une longue étape. Un ciel gris. Au départ, une température de Kiravi (12°) qui ravit pas vraiment. Kiravi ? Pour les moins de 60 balais, c’était de la jaja vendue dans un litron avec 2 étoiles qu’on allait chercher au Coop avec son six-trous. Jaja ? Ben du picrate, quoi, du gros rouge qui tache ! Six-trous ? Faut tout vous apprendre, les jeunes, ou quoi ? Bref, il fait frisquet. On passe les deux tiers du trajet à monter jusqu’à la Gaussturm, un relai hertzien sis au sommet d’un ancien volcan (pour autant que j’ai compris du panneau d’information) et pourvu à sa base d’une buvette qui a fermé depuis longtemps, rajoutant une note de morosité à la tristesse du lieu. La Gaussturm s’appelle la Gaussturm en hommage à Gauss, le célèbre physicien qui, petit, n’était pas toujours propre (le fameux sale Gauss. Ha ha !). Voilà pour la page culture. Puis descente dans les bois puis les champs puis un long village puis remontée dans les bois pour rejoindre, enfin, et sous un peu de soleil, enfin, notre Jagdhaus au milieu des bois. Jagdhaus « drei Sterne » mais sans Wifi dans les chambres et sans réseau, ce qui explique la livraison tardive de ce billet. Enfin, cela n’a affecté que ceux qui attendent avec impatience notre livraison quotidienne. J’en profite pour faire une grosse bise à Josette !
