AFTG Readalong- FAQ
Hello all! Do you:
Want to read more in 2024?
Want to reread AFTG (or read for the first time!)
Want to talk to other fans, but need structure and find Discord scary and chaotic (*me*)?
If so, this event is for you! Read on:
What is it?
Through Storygraph (Goodreads, but better), they now have a Readalong feature, which is essentially a digital book club.
Where?
When?
The readalong is set to run for all of 2024, since there are conveniently 48 chapters in the series. So, it would be one chapter a week, with a catch-up week between books, a wrap up at the end, and a break week in the middle with fun activities/forums.
How?
In order to participate, you need to have a StoryGraph account. It's super easy, and even has a way to import your Goodreads shelf to their system.
Then:
Each week, a forum topic for the chapter we're on will open. So, for example, chapter 1 of The Foxhole Court will open on January 1 until January 7.
During that week, people are free to make posts commenting on that chapter's events, and chatting with others on their posts.
Then, the next week, a new chapter will open up. You are still free to comment on previous chapters, so don't worry if you're late or fall behind!
That's it!
Additional Info
As far as rules, I only have one:
Don't be an asshole.
That means, don't start fights with other people about their opinions. This is not a discord: I am not a mod and I am not your mom. I'm opening the space, but I am not here to mediate arguments between people, and honestly, I'm not going to be watching the space that closely except as a participant.
Keep in mind the trigger warnings inherent to the series; I expect that everyone is mature enough to know that these books have a lot of sensitive topics, and you should only participate insofar as you are able to handle that. But again- not your mom.
Finally, don't spoil future chapters- even if you're rereading, someone else might be reading for the first time.
With that in mind, this is a space to get to talk about a series we love in celebration of TSC, and remake the forums of old on FF.net and LJ. So have fun!
Send me an ask if you have questions, and spread to people in the fandom! I look forward to seeing y'all on Jan. 1!

Daily Blog June 22, 2023
So that was fun yesterday in starting this blog. I seriously do hope that as time goes by that others will start doing the same. :) I do want to add that in my posts I will be adding some fandom history now and then. Today is one of those days. I may have been a bit self-indulgent. *blushes*
What I'm Reading:
I'm trying to savor the Ginny sorted into Slytherin story I mentioned yesterday. In my first read of it, I raced through it and know that I probably missed enjoying it in it's complete form. I'm on a few Discords and one of them being Harry Potter Fanfiction Club. They have a vote every month to choose what fics the members can read together and discuss. This month they chose for Drarry aideomai's Dwelling. I'd read this masterpiece before but decided to look for a shorter fic by this amazing author. I chose Nice Things. OMG all 22K of this fic is such a treat. If you ever need a warm, dreamylike fic, choose this one. It's an 8th year fic where only 7 of the classmates come back. Ron, Harry, and Hermione are in the mix. Draco is there along with Theo. They are assigned to live in a cottage on the grounds of Hogwarts. The progression of Harry and Draco's relationship is lovely. Read it now or Bookmark it for later when the need for this type of fic hits...as we all know there are times it's needed.
Tumblr Posts of Interest:
I only have one today and that's just because I have a bit to say about it as it holds a special place in my fandom heart.
HD Fan Fair (Career Fair) is open for prompts! They have openings for 250 prompts and so far have 153. Prompt closing is on June 30th. Claiming begins on July 1st.
First of all, I think we need to give a huge shout-out to Fan Fair mod @phoenixacid. This will be her 10th year of modding this fest. I do believe she worked on it even earlier. Anyone who's modded a fest before knows the dedication it takes to see it through. Her co-mod, @sassy-cissa has been involved since 2018.
Here's a little history about this Fest
This fest has been going on annually since 2009, with the exception of 2011. It was conceived by @marguerite26 and myself, with @vaysh11 and Jamie2109 soon joining in. I was unable to mod for personal reasons that first year and only partially the second...after that I pretty much left fandom. Back then, you really couldn't just start a fest when other established fests were already on the calendar. It was considered impolite and it would be posted on LJ about what an arse you were. LOL When hd_inspired closed shop, we jumped in and took their spot in Autumn. Fan Fair started with Career Fair and then moved on to Travel Fair. Since then, they've had Book (books mentioned in HP), Sex, Food, and Pottermore Fairs with repeats for Career, Travel and Food. Both Inspired and then Fan Fair were novel in being a prompt fest as opposed to an exchange fest like @hd-erised (back then it was hd_holidays). We felt it gave greater control to the authors to write to a prompt they liked as opposed to be assigned one, which from personal experience can cause angst and meltdowns. That is why it was called a Fair as opposed to a fest. A fest usually meant an Exchange Fest.
When I came back to fandom, I about cried seeing that @Phoenixacid had not only kept Fan Fair alive but it was thriving. I wrote for it that first year I came back in 2021, and I made a promise to read and comment on every fic and art piece posted for the Fairs. I only skipped one fic last year. It was brilliantly written but was beyond my comfort level for psychological horror. I don't listen to Podfics, I'm sorry to say. When I used to commute hours to and from work, I could but now I don't have the where-with-all to pay attention.
So go PROMPT!!!!! And give tons of love to the two mods!!!! Mods are the backbone of fandom.
For more history on Fan Fair and links to all the previous Fairs and their masterlists, here you go. Fan Fair on Fanlore.
Tumblr Drarry Fic/Art Resource:
Did you know the amazing @snowgall created and maintains a Drarry fanart archive at @snowingalway. She had noticed that fandom art of old was being lost and artists were leaving fandom. The pieces available for viewing are those that the artists have given her permission to archive. She personally contacted the artists to ask for such permission. I think when you visit the sight and view what she's saved, you too will be thrilled and indebted for what she's done for Drarry fandom. Please not she also posts and collect current works, too!
Last Tidbit:
I mentioned yesterday that I'd be reccing a fic today. I'm going to hold off on that until tomorrow. This is long enough. *blushes again*

20 Questions for Fanfci writers
I was tagged by @thetragicallynerdy ! Thank you!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
278. Please remember I've been writing for 20+ years and I did port everything over when I left LJ.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
4,491,070, but that is artificially inflated from the 800k repost of Leda Verse in one file, so it's actually 3.6 million give or take.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Right now just OFMD, but uh...many. So many.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1. How (thanks to Gabriel) Dean and Castiel (accidentally) raised each other (and Sam). Supernatural. Dean/Castiel. Sam/Gabriel. I wrote this 11 years ago. It's a juggernaut.
2. A Mountain I'm Willing to Die On. Zootopia. Judy Hopps/Nick Wilde. I have no defense, I was compelled as soon as I saw the movie.
3. (Redacted because fuck J.K. Rowling, but I refuse to take down work and pretend that I was never in the fandom. The story comes with a very clear disclaimer that I do not support or agree with her in any way.)
4. Jonathan to his David. MCU. Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes. The one were Steve has a tiny penis and Bucky is into it.
5. All the First Times. MCU. Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes. One of those stories where Bucky heals in the Avengers Tower.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
YES! Because I love to stay thank you and it helps build community! <3 Love you all.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Treacherous Waters. The Hobbit. Fili/Kili. I got many shrieking comments on this one, including 'I actually curled around my computer making distressed sounds of horror' Very proud of myself for that one.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
That's pretty subjective. A lot of my fics end pretty happily with personal growth, found family, and parties.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
So far I've mostly managed to avoid being picked up on that radar. I've gotten stray comments, but it's rarely hate. I think it's mostly because I've never quite gotten popular enough to draw that kind of attention. I know the more attention a fic has gotten, the more likely I am to start to get odd comments or asks. I'm also not very active on Twitter which I think helps.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Rarely! I used to subscribe to the theory that if you don't put in smut, no one will read your work, but as birthday present to myself five or six year ago, I just stopped writing it as an experiment and while my hits went down, not nearly as much as you'd think. Now I only write if the mood really strikes me and am much happier for it.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Yep! I don't think it was crazy, but I wrote a short Avengers/Mad Max one that I'm pretty proud of: Fresh Eden
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not stolen. I did have them put on Goodreads without permission which was a weird moment in fandom a few years back. I mean it's possible someone's stolen something and I haven't found out yet, I guess. My book has been pirated though.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! Thanks to all the translators out there, you do incredible work for your community.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
A few times! Nothing super recent though there's WIP out there.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
I don't have one. I'm a consummate multishipper. I will say my most consistent ship over the years is Brian/Bender of The Breakfast Club. I will always go back to that well.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
The SMAU I was working on in OFMD. It was a really fun experiment and I don't really have that much left to go, but the amount of work to make it was extensive.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue. I really love writing how people talk to each other and I think a lot about tone and vocabulary and styles.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Plotting. I tend to go by the seat of my pants.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I will generally just note when someone has switched languages. I don't have any confidence in auto translators and unless it's an established canon nickname or endearment, I try to avoid it. I admire multilingual authors so much!
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Buffy! I was fifteen and it was a Willow/Spike fic. That was...almost twenty five years ago.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
The answer changes, and for a long time it was this Sam/Gabriel fic where I put my whole philosophy major ass into it. But these days, it's definitively Leda House and the Kraken Verse. How could it not be?
---
Thanks so much for the tag, this was a lot of fun!! Neat to look back, too.
I'm gonna tag (but only if you feel like it friends!) @internerdionality @museaway @napneeders
If you didn't get tagged but see this and want to do it, consider yourself tagged!!

my favorite thing to do is to read other people's favorite books. it also doesn't necessarily have to be a book either, it can be a screenshot of a poem your friend sent you five years ago, a fic from LJ that you've kept in your bookmarks, a copy of a script from when you were a part of a high school drama club... i see reading as a dialogue between me and the author, but having someone introduce me to a written work adds a new layer of intimacy that makes reading all the more special... your favorite poem in the hands of a friend is an offering of not only the author's vulnerability but also of yours... i hope it haunts you... i hope it haunts us both...

Hi Shadow! I know you’ve read the TVD books and since I just finished reading Midnight, I wondered if you happen to know where to find LJ Smith’s continuations? I’d rather keep going and read her continuing vision than the new ghostwriter they replaced her with, although I may go back and read those as well someday, but I can’t work out where to find them! Thanks!
Hello! An absolutely awesome person put up links to the pdfs here for download:
And if you want to just read them, there will be ads though, you can also go here:
Unfortunately since Kinde Worlds became defunct, LJ never got around to posting Part 2 and Into The Wood. Hope this helps you anon! Happy reading!

hiii !! i hope youre well <3 i was wondering if you had any reccs for season 6 fics like aus where the soullessness is dealt with faster/everyone knowing sooner or just good s6 fics please hehe
Hi, nonnie!! I'm well, but I've been very scatterbrained lately. I hoped to have a nice little list for you before my surgery, but it's been really difficult to concentrate and then the lj deletion problem the other day. Since post-surgery might make this take even longer, I want to send this request out for crowdsourcing.
Hey fandom friends! Got any good s6 AU recs for nonnie? Maybe some classic ones that aren't as easily found with tags, too? (I'm assuming wincest/gencest here, but genfic also welcome.) 💕
_
In the meantime, you might find something that scratches the itch on my recent s6 AU Rec List
And this is technically s7 AU, but we just read this in the Wincest Book Club and I loved it. Codepenchesters FTW.

Assuming that your name actually is Stacey…were you active a very long time ago on LJ in Buffy and Stargate fic verses? There is something about your writing, both fic and when you talk about work, that is very familiar. And I can’t remember the LJ handle to ask “Hey, are you so-and-so?”
I wasn't, but it's wild to think I might have a fic doppelganger out there! My name is a tribute to Anastasia/Stacey "Boontsie" McGill, aka the bestest and blondest member of the Babysitter's Club. Fun fact about Stacey: she's from New York City, which she doesn't talk about much in the books, so a lot of people don't realize she is very cool and hip and urban. (Note: this is a joke, don't @ me.)
All that to say, I adore Buffy, but was never into Stargate. Still, this makes me want to watch it!

The difference between writing fics about the pros' work and writing fic about your fellow fans work is the presence of a community. Book authors don't tend to be in a community with their fans. Do you? Do you share your hobby spaces with your fans? Even if you don't, it can't be hard to grasp why people don't want it done to them, and why the people who share the same hobby spaces as them should ask before making fic of fic. A big part of it is that it implicates the writer of the first fic in whatever they are involved in, and fans of fans usually let them know.
There's a difference between writing fic of the work of a person who doesn't know or care about you and the person who goes to book club with you. If the second person says no, it's going to affect them if you do so against their wishes.
--
Sure, but this is assuming the author is JKR and that fandom is a book club.
In the 90s, on average, fandoms were for really major pro work where the author wasn't anywhere near oneself, and a given fandom camp was pretty small. Even by the LJ era, I'm often only a degree or two of separation from most people who were active...
But that view is totally inaccurate for 2022 fandom. Plenty of active fandoms are for some youtuber who encourages overly intimate parasocial relationships even if they hate fic. There are webcomics and all kinds of smaller time media with fandoms. And "fandom" in the AO3 fic sense is immense. These people aren't friends of friends. They're literal millions of people who often have no connection to one another.
It's not surprising that people feel there's a difference, but it's also not surprising that not everyone agrees about where to draw the line.
