propaganda under the cut. (Spoilers for KOS and ROW). Nikolai info taken from the grishaverse wiki.
Threads:
Threads is a 1984 British-Australian apocalyptic war drama television film jointly produced by the BBC, Nine Network and Western-World Television Inc. Written by Barry Hines and directed and produced by Mick Jackson, it is a dramatic account of nuclear war and its effects in Britain, specifically on the city of Sheffield in Northern England. The plot centres on two families as a confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union erupts. As the nuclear exchange between NATO and the Warsaw Pact begins, the film depicts the medical, economic, social and environmental consequences of nuclear war.[2]
Nikolai Lantsov is a former King of Ravka. He is the second son of Alexander III (though later revealed to be the biological son of Magnus Opjer). He spent many years undercover, taking on a variety of jobs and hobbies.
Personality and traits
As Sturmhond, he appears to be cocky and brash, always "using ten words when two would have sufficed." He is rather mysterious; no one is able to tell where he is from or what his real name is. Sturmhond is said to have the respect of his crew, not their fear; he is able to retain their loyalty without resorting to threats of power plays that Alina has seen the Darkling employ, and it is said that he "does things his own way," implying that he abides by his own rules rather than conventional ones.
He is shown to be proficient with a number of weapons and is always seen to be bearing an assortment of weapons, including a brace of pistols, several knives, and a sword. He seems to have a particular fondness for the sword, even being willing to instruct Mal in the use of it. Usually, Sturmhond is observed wearing a bright teal frock coat with gaudy gold buttons and huge cuffs that Alina thinks would be more at home in a ballroom than on a ship's deck. When Alina and Mal dine with him, he shows a preference for fine cooking – the ship's crew includes a chef employed for this purpose. In conversation, he is jovial and intentionally lighthearted; though, when he is challenged, he betrays a much harder edge.
Alina and Mal are impressed by Nikolai's ability to appeal to the people around them and present them with a persona that they want to see. During this time, he shows himself to be extremely socially intelligent and willing to do whatever he can to manipulate the public into supporting him. He is really fair and just and cannot stand the mistreatment of innocent people. Nikolai is very intelligent and is said to excel at practically anything he tries. Nikolai suffers from being told he is ‘Nikolai Nothing’ by his brother and comments about his parentage but he hides his insecurities and does his best to satisfy everyone. He is adored by the public.
Skills and abilities.
Nikolai is a gifted fighter, swordsman, and marksman having learned to fight in street brawls as a child and serving in the First Army.
Nikolai is a natural leader, diplomat, and strategist.
Nikolai is a master actor able to pass off as Sturmhond which helps him be very manipulative and persuasive with his natural charisma.
Nikolai can juggle.
In King of Scars and Rule of Wolves, Nikolai is able to use his monster form while remaining conscious. He can fly and use his fangs/claws.
Nikolai can pilot airships and fighter planes, dating back to his experiments with his ship the Hummingbird.
Nikolai is a gifted inventor, when he was a child he turned a priceless Lantsov clock into a bizarre contraption.

Here’s the thing because I cannot believe Alina would just willingly throw her support into the Lantsov monarchy. If Alexander III hadn’t sexually abused Genya, Alina wouldn’t have any personal beef with him. Despite the fact that the Old King would still exploit the Grisha while being a bigot to Alina’s FACE!
“It is my word against hers,” the King said, waving his finger at Genya. “I am a King—“
I stepped between them. “And I am a Saint. Shall we see whose word carries more weight?”
“You shut your mouth, you grotesque little witch. I should have had you killed when I had the chance.”
It honestly says it all. He sees them as witches, he sees them as a thing to be used and he insults Alina in the presence of everyone!
And the worst part is that none of Alina’s inner monologue reflects on that. She doesn’t note how he generalizes all Grisha into witches and sub-human. She doesn’t come back to the fact that his bigotry is very much alive and well and he’s the effing king. The head of the state that dictates much of which decrees passes into law is a bigoted fool. And she doesn’t want to kill him? Blames the Darkling for ever making moves against this piece of trash and all his line? Aleksander was right!!! this motherfucker and all his ilk deserves to choke.
And yeah, I’m sorrry to say, Nikolai too.
I obviously I don’t think he’s trash or bigoted at all like his father. But he stood by and watched his father call Alina a witch without defending her from this particular discrimination, or at all try to change his father’s mindset about Grisha as a whole. It wouldn’t change the Old King’s ways of course, but the point is that I wanted to see Nikolai stand up for the Grisha in the moment that it mattered the most, not whispered promises and ideals behind closed doors.
And this is exactly why I think he’s pretentious and trivializes the Grisha plight if only if it is for his own ambition to rule.
The monarchy was trash. The Darkling was right. And Alina couldn’t care less about the crisis of the socio-political situation her kind are living in. If Aleksander wasn’t so lonely and craved to end his solitude with his immortal equal that is the Sun Summoner, he would have had much more success in making the country safe for his people.

Written for @zoyanazyalenski‘s Zoya Week. Day seven (28.07): the queen of Ravka.
While writing this I’ve come to the realization that I don’t have a firm grasp on Ehri’s character. Please forgive me if she’s slightly OOC.
Zoya’s nights had been much quieter since the king’s wedding. Nikolai still had to chained up for fear of the monster but now Tolya and Tamar handled it. People had assumed that Zoya’s late night and early morning visits to Nikolai’s chambers meant they were having an affair, which obviously wouldn’t fly now that Nikolai was married. The marriage had helped their relationship with Shu Han, but that was different than saying rumors of the king continuing a long standing affair within weeks of his wedding would be okay.
So Zoya had her nights and mornings to herself, and she tried to pretend she was happy about it. In all actuality she missed the conversations she and Nikolai had had at night before she locked him in, and she missed the sleepy mornings when Nikolai blinked up groggily up at her while she put the chains away. She missed having breakfast with him and planning with him and generally having more to do than lay in her bed, stare at the ceiling and contemplate just how messed up the world had become.
She hadn’t been really asleep when someone started pounding on the door to her chambers. She was on her feet in an instant and hauling on a robe before running to the door and pulling it open. “What?”
A terrified young guard--perhaps the one who had replaced Isaak--was standing outside. “Commander,” he said. “You need to come now. The king and queen-”
Zoya’s stomach clenched. Nikolai had been spending the night with Ehri. Immediately Zoya began running through the possible things which could have gone wrong. Maybe there had been an assassination attempt. Maybe Nikolai had been wrong when he’d said Ehri wasn’t going to hurt him. Maybe they’d just gotten in a screaming fight. Hopefully they’d just gotten in a screaming fight.
It took her a moment to realize that the guard had not gone on. “Well?” she demanded. “What happened?”
The boy looked terrified at having the Commander of the Second Army glaring at him. “I-I-I don’t know,” he stammered. “Captain Kir-Bataar just told me to get you and not tell anyone.”
“Alright, thank you,” Zoya was already out of her room and closing the door. “Stay here. Do not speak to anyone. If you do I will know.” and then she was running.
She stayed on the ground the whole way to Ehri’s bedchambers. She could have flown and halved the time, but she was trying to keep her new powers on the downlow for as long as possible. They had enough problems without someone accusing her of being an abomination.
By the time she reached the hall where Ehri’s chambers were, the guards were milling around looking terrified and confused. They stared at her like she’d grown a second head. Too late she realized she was still in her silken nightgown with her robe open over the top and her hair loose. “What are you looking at?” she snapped. “Get back to your posts. Say nothing to anyone until you are debriefed!” She desperately wanted to ask for a report, but if the guard who had been sent to her knew nothing she figured these probably didn’t either. It was best to just look like she knew exactly what was going on and have Tamar and Tolya fill her in.
She let herself into Ehri’s chambers. She was braced for the worst, but thankfully there was no blood splattered all over the room. The first person she saw was Ehri, standing flat against the wall. Ravka’s new queen was wrapped in a robe, her hair was wild and her eyes were the size of dinner plates. She looked like a person who had just witnessed something terrifying, impossible and world-changing but hadn’t had the chance to figure out just what it was yet.
Zoya closed the door behind her and took in the rest of the room. Tolya and Tamar were standing on the far side of the room over an ominous and far-too-familiar lump on the floor. Nikolai. The monster. However you wanted to think of it. The creature was still and silent in Heartrender-induced sleep. One of its wings stretched across the floor as if reaching for Zoya.
“What happened?” she asked, though she already knew. She headed across the room towards the twins and the silent, still form of the monster. Someone had smashed a lamp and there was glass all over the floor. She stepped carefully, wishing she’d thought to put on boots.
“He must have fallen asleep,” Tamar said. Her hands were held up in front of her in readiness. She and Tolya were both tense as wires about to snap. “And this happened. Luckily Ehri woke up before the transformation finished--she said something hit her, maybe a wing or something. She smashed him upside the head with a lamp and screamed for us. None of the other guards saw him.”
Zoya looked over her shoulder at Ehri who was watching with fear but obvious interest. “Can you go wait in your solar, Your Grace?” Zoya asked, infusing as much respect and iron into her voice as possible. “Take some guards. We’ll be there to explain everything to you once it’s safe.”
Ehri stared at her, for a moment Zoya didn’t thought she was going to argue, then she said, “Alright.”
“Good,” Zoya said, forgetting herself. The queen began to leave, but Zoya called after her, “Ehri.”
“What?” she asked, turning around. She lifted her chin, but it was obvious she wanted to get out of the room.
“Now that you’ve seen this we have no choice but to tell you some very important secrets,” Zoya said. “Please, prove that we can trust you and say nothing to anyone until we have a chance to talk to you.”
“Fine,” Ehri said. Her gaze skittered to the monster and then back to Zoya’s face. “You can trust me.” and she left.
Zoya stepped carefully over monster’s outstretched wing and crouched down by it’s head. The creature was drooling in sleep, blood from a head wound trickling down it’s face. Zoya gently pushed some of the hair aside to inspect the wound. Ehri had gotten him pretty good. The monster shifted and grunted. Tamar and Tolya both gestured and sent the creature plunging back into sleep.
“That keeps happening,” Tamar said. “The creature is stronger than it used to be. Way stronger.”
“How is that possible?” Zoya said though she already knew the answer. “He hasn’t transformed since the Shadow Fold.”
“Sheer force of will,” Tolya said, running a hand through his hair. “I want to kick either him or myself. He hasn’t been sleeping particularly well, if at all. I thought it was stress, but maybe this has something to do with it.” He waved his free hand at the monster. Zoya didn’t think she’d ever seen him so agitated. “I knew he was exhausted yesterday, but he said he’d be fine and like an idiot I believed him.”
“It’s fine,” Tamar put a hand on his arm. “It was always going to happen eventually. No one’s even dead: not even any livestock.”
“If this is going to start happening again, we have no idea how to fix it, do we?” Tolya asked, ignoring his sister and looking straight at Zoya. “The monk’s promises were the only lead we had; now that that’s gone there’s nothing.”
“Well there is our special friend that we’re housing the dungeons,” Zoya said.
“That’s never going to work,” Tolya snapped. He wasn’t wrong; they probably had a better chance of asking the monster nicely to leave Nikolai alone and it actually listening than they did of the Darkling agreeing to help them, but he was the only lead they had. Unfortunately, he knew that and was going out of his way to be as unhelpful as possible.
“As much as I hate to admit, Tolya’s right,” Tamar said. “We’re probably going to have to start planning for the worst case scenario,” she didn’t say “which is that we’ll have to kill Nikolai to stop the monster” but they all heard it anyway. “He has no heir and the Lantsov succession has never been murkier. Who inherits if something happens to Nikolai? Ehri? Alexander III again? One of the myriad people claiming to be Vasily’s bastard who aren’t lying? He needs to declare an heir, Zoya, and he needs to do it now.”
Zoya thought of a night in the Fold, surrounded by the strange castle. “It think he already has,” she said quietly.
“What do you mean?” Tolya asked.
“When we were in the Fold,” Zoya said slowly, choosing her words very carefully. “Nikolai showed me a document he’d written. It named me protector of Ravka and commander of both the First and Second Armies.”
Tolya’s jaw dropped and Tamar swore.
“I told him it was ridiculous,” Zoya said quickly. “And I’ve been trying to convince him to tear the order up, but he just changes the subject whenever I bring it up.”
“Why didn’t he just marry you then?” Tamar snapped. “We all that’s what both of you really want. If he’s going to give you the power to be queen in everything but name, why not just make it official and damn the consequences!”
“That couldn’t happen,” Zoya said, ignoring the tightness in her chest that confirmed that Tamar was right about what she and marrying Nikolai was what Zoya really wanted. “A Grisha queen? The nobles wouldn’t stand for it. The country would fall into turmoil.”
“That’s already what’s going to happen!” Tamar sounded frantic.
“Actually, Tamar, this might actually help us,” Tolya said. “Nikolai’s talked about Vasily Lantsov’s oldest bastard before. Apparently the boy is lazier and stupider than his father ever was. If Nikolai declares the kid his heir, Zoya could act as regent as first and then pull strings in the background when he comes of age. It would work.”
“You really want to make me the queen of Ravka?” Zoya asked.
“Have you been listening to this conversation, Zoya?” Tolya asked. “You’re already the queen of Ravka in all but name.”
“He actually might be right about this,” Tamar pinched the bridge of her nose. “You probably have more power than Ehri does right now. So much power, actually, that it’s probably a good thing you and Nikolai agree on everything or we’d be in trouble.”
“No one knows about it,” Zoya said. “So it’s worthless.”
“Then it needs to become official, like, tomorrow,” Tamar said. “The people need to have a chance to get used to this in case…” she still couldn’t say it. “Just in case.”
Zoya looked from the twins to the unconscious body of the monster. She half wished Nikolai would change back into himself and wake up, but she knew that he was more likely to side with the twins than with her in this instance. She was surrounded and outnumbered.
“Fine,” she said. “We’ll do this your way.”

Remember Alina, you DON'T have any rights...
Siege and Storm- Chapter 12
Tumblr media
Another Grisha to drag out of bed in middle of the night?
Or are there other hostile groups we're not shown?
Tumblr media
I've read antis with this opinion. Tragic.
As if they didn't pay for that privilege with their freedom and lives...
Tumblr media
Alina still doesn't quite realize, how does ~that~ translate.
You're a serf, you're the Sun Summoner.
... doesn't sound so empowering, does it?
As if "they" never needed the Darkling before her, as if "they" offered Grisha a place to live out of goodness of their hearts. As if the Darkling couldn't destroy the whole capital, when push comes to shove. Yet somehow, they're all free game.
Tumblr media
Serf, honey, that's what you are, Crown's slave of different name, and that's why the Darkling wanted things to change.
Looking at this passage, I'd love to read the King talking like a KING:
“He thinks she can be trusted,” the King quavered. “We’re not so sure. Her escape from the Darkling seems a very unlikely story, but we cannot deny that Ravka might have a use for her services.”
Yes, Alina is less than a person for him. Why not refer to her as if she weren't even present? Addressing people below one's station in third person...
Tumblr media
In short- "If I decide to get rid of you, nothing will stop me from doing it. I don't need a reason, for there's always one."
Remember, Alina? You're ... the Sun Summoner. They need you...
Tumblr media
Alina's confidence would be more applaudable, if she weren't strong only thanks to two amplifiers, and her repertoire included more than shining and the Cut.
Was this how the Darkling had felt? Yada, yada, let's stop him! Why does Alina always have these flashes of reason, if they never turn into something more?! On one hand she realizes what he has to keep enduring for the scraps of power ensuring he'll be able to work for his people, on the other he never quite makes in out of the shadow of her bigotry (Pun totally intended.) to become a human being worth active empathy in her eyes. The best she does is offer him decent burial.

Netflix's Shadow & Bone series, based on the bestselling books by Leigh Bardugo, has a rich mythology and vibrant characters; here it all is explained. The gritty, dark fantasy Netflix series was first announced in January 2019 with Eric Heisserer (Arrival) serving as showrunner, creator and executive producer, with Bardugo herself also serving as EP on the series, guaranteeing it will stay faithful to the spirit of the books.
Bardugo's series of novels has earned itself a large and faithful following thanks to their intricate world-building, an interesting system of magic, and unforgettable characters. The scope of the new upcoming Netflix TV show is ambitious; thus far Bardugo's "Grishaverse" consists of six books: the original trilogy, a mostly unrelated duology set in the same universe, and a direct sequel to the original trilogy meant to pick up where the events of it left off. Rather than adapt them all exactly in order or cut the duology out completely, the approach Heisserer is taking is to weave both stories and sets of characters together in an intertwining narrative.
Related: Everything We Know So Far About Netflix's Shadow & Bone
With the crossing A plot, B plot approach of both stories being adapted simultaneously, that means the series will introduce an awful lot of characters into a universe that's brand-new for many viewers. In order to prep for Shadow & Bone's anticipated release in April, here's a handy breakdown of the books and how the series differs from them, the characters, and the world of the Grishaverse.
Tumblr media
The original Grishaverse trilogy consists of three books, Shadow and Bone, Storm and Siege, and Ruin and Rising. They tell the story of teenage orphan, Alina Starkov, who grows up in an orphanage in the kingdom of Ravka with her best friend and fellow orphan, Malyen Oretsev, or Mal. Both Alina and Mal are conscripted into the Ravkan army but Alina, who has never been good at anything, doesn't take to it the way Mal does.
They're sent on a mission to cross the Shadow Fold, otherwise known as the Unsea, an unnatural tear of absolute darkness full of monsters that has split the once-great kingdom of Ravka in two. During the dangerous crossing, their regiment is attacked by the monsters, called volcra, and Mal is brutally injured. In her fear and panic, Alina exhibits a rare and to-that-point dormant power that saves his life while changing hers forever, for it's revealed Alina's power may be the key to saving their war-ravaged nation.
Soon, Alina is whisked away to the capital Os Alta, to be trained as a Grisha, the magic users of the world. Her greatest champion, and source of confusion, is General Kirigan, a.k.a. the Darkling, the ultra-powerful leader of the Grisha and head of their magical armed forces. As Alina's power grows, she learns more about it – and that someone may be using her as a pawn for their own ends. Suddenly, Alina has to learn how to carry the burden of being the country's great hope while navigating the pitfalls of royal intrigue and betrayal, all the while fighting her attraction to her mentor, the Darkling, and worrying about Mal and how he fares on the front lines.

Tumblr media
Leigh Bardugo's Grishaverse is a rich tapestry of magical fantasy and gritty, realistic conflict. It's set in a fictional world that mirrors ours, with the various countries in the world being based on real-world countries and cultures. Ravka, where the majority of the action of Shadow & Bone takes place, is modeled after 18th-century Tsarist Russia, with its capital Os Alta, serving as a stand-in for Moscow. But other countries are visited in the book series, including Kerch and its capital, Ketterdam (the Netherlands and Amsterdam), Fjerda (Scandinavia), Shu Han (Mongolia & China), Novyi Zem (American & Australian colonies), and the Wandering Isles (Ireland).
When the story opens, Ravka has been embroiled in a long civil war after the rebellious Darkling's first attempts to depose Ravka's weak-willed king, Alexander III. As a result, the people of Ravka are no strangers to military service, but Ravka's has two separate militaries: those who practice the Small Science - what we'd call magic - known as the Grisha, and who serve in the Second Army, and the non-magical people (referred to as otkazat'sya by the Grisha) who serve in the First Army. The two Ravkan armies sit uneasy with each other, with the First Army fearing the Grisha's magical power and influence, and the Grisha often having a disdainful disregard for non-magical people, fueled in part by the fact magic users used to be persecuted. Understandably, the kingdom of Ravka is tired and impoverished due to its constant state of war with itself and hostile nations that would seek to take advantage of the inner turmoil, with the royal Lantsov family ruling over it all.
Tumblr media
The Grisha are separated into three magical groups: Corporalki, Etherealki, and Materialki, each with their own subgroups and uniforms. Of the three, the Corporalki are the highest tier in the Second Army and the most feared magic users, as their magic is the kind that manipulates the body at the smallest molecular level, bringing either death (Heartrenders) or life (Healers). The Corporalki are identified by their crimson red kefta uniforms.
Etherealki are also powerful and an important part of the Second Army as they deal with the elements, manipulating air (Squallers), controlling and creating fire with a flint focus (Inferni), and those who can control water (Tidemakers). Squallers and Tidemakers are especially important to the Navy and a pair are found on every Ravkan ship, their blue keftas denoting them as Etherealki.
Related: Cursed Season 2 Theory: How Nimue Could Be Saved From Death
Lastly, the Materialki may not have skills that are as flashy as the first two branches, but without their magic, the Ravkan armies, and Ravka itself, would fall apart, for Materialkis, also known as Fabrikators, are able to manipulate inorganic material to create incredible weapons and inventions. The Durasts can manipulate any solid object, whether it be glass, metal, stone, wood, and more, while Alkemi deal in more alchemical matters, such as poisons and blasting powders. The Fabrikators are known by their purple kefta.
Then there are the extremely rare kind of Grisha known as Summoners. Though technically Etherealki, they get their own name as their powers are so unique among their kind. In the world of Shadow & Bone, only two known summoners exist: The Darkling, a.k.a. the Shadow Summoner, who can summon the dark, and Alina Starkov, a.k.a. the Sun Summoner, who can summon the light.
Tumblr media
There are many characters across the six books published so far, and Netflix's Shadow & Bone series is using characters from both the original Grishaverse trilogy and the Six of Crows duology. Here are the main characters in the Netflix series.
The Darkling, a.k.a. General Kirigan - The Darkling (Ben Barnes) is the leader of the Grisha Second Army. He is mysterious and powerful, the only person on Earth known to be able to summon darkness. Thus, his abilities and the pressures of leading the army have isolated him from the rest of humanity and while he is not to be trusted, he's possibly to be pitied. When he meets Alina Starkov and realizes what she is, it creates an instant connection as he believes he's found someone who can finally understand him.
Related: Why Netflix's Shadow & Bone Is Hiding Ben Barnes Being The Darkling
Alina Starkov - The Sun Summoner, Alina (Jessie Mei Li) is a teenaged orphan who discovers she has a rare and world-changing power during a mission through the Shadow Fold. Suddenly, Alina's life is turned upside-down as she goes from a quiet life in a small village to the center of the capital city of Os Alta as the one who can perhaps destroy the Shadow Fold for good. Alina tries her best to live up to everyone's expectations, but the weight of it is lot to bear and it draws her closer to the Darkling in their shared loneliness.
Malyen "Mal" Oretsev - Mal (Archie Renaux) is Alina's best friend; they grew up together in the same orphanage. Mal gets drafted into the First Army where he proves himself to be an exceptionally gifted tracker and soldier. As their lives head in different directions after the revelation of Alina's powers, the distance and conflicting objectives put a strain on their friendship, even as their connection forged from childhood refuses to break.
Kaz "Dirtyhands" Brekker - Kaz Brekker (Freddy Carter) is the de facto leader of the Dregs, also known as the Crows, one of Ketterdam's street gangs, and one of the most ambitious thanks to Kaz being a criminal mastermind and bolder than the rest. Kaz is only a teenager, but his legend has grown in Ketterdam's back alleys and nighttime shadows. Kaz is known for being willing to do any job, no matter how violent or dangerous, without showing an ounce of fear, thus earning him the nickname Dirtyhands.
Inej "The Wraith" Ghafa - As Kaz Brekker's right-hand woman, Inej (Amita Suman) is as feared as Kaz himself. Of Suli background and raised as an acrobat, Inej uses her catlike reflexes and incredible grace to be the Dregs' spy. She can get into any room, scale any wall, infiltrate any building, thus earning the nickname The Wraith in Ketterdam's criminal circles. Despite this, Inej has a strong moral code, and though she always has at least half a dozen knives somewhere on her body, all named for a saint, there are some lines she won't cross, not even for Kaz.
Related: Cursed: The Original Lady Of The Lake Legend Explained
Jesper Fahey - The Dregs' sharpshooter, at first glance, Jesper (Kit Young) doesn't seem like someone you can trust in a fight: He's a gambler, cocky, and always quick with a joke no matter the situation. But Jesper is a cool head in a fight and has a near-perfect aim no matter what. Unknown to many, Jesper is also a Durast, but won't use his power thanks a childhood trauma. Due to his powers not being released, Jesper is often fidgety and impulsive, the excess magical energy making him constantly restless.
Nina Zenik - Nina (Danielle Galligan) is a Heartrender from Ravka who also works with the Dregs from time to time. She's beautiful and curvaceous, and her boisterous personality and forward manner belies a compassionate person. Nina is a big personality, who feels everything and loves fiercely, whether it's food, people, or laughter. Despite this, Nina is loyal to her country and often puts Ravka's needs above her own.
Matthias Helvar - Matthias (Calahan Skogman) is a Fjerdan Drüskelle soldier who captures Nina when she's on a mission. The Fjerdans are suspicious people with a hatred of witchcraft, immediately viewing all Grisha as devils to be destroyed. Matthias is uptight, bullheaded, and unfriendly, but there's also a softer, more open person struggling to break out from the years of brutal living that have made him so cold.
The big difference between the books and the new Netflix series is that the series will be weaving together characters from both the original Grishaverse trilogy and the Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom duology at the same time. In order to keep the timeline intact, this means the storyline with the Dregs will be a prequel story to those familiar with the books, with the events involving the Dregs in the series happening before the events in the books. This leaves open the possibility that Six of Crows may be adapted in later seasons. Likewise, there are two major characters already confirmed to not be appearing in Shadow & Bone season 1: Nikolai Lantsov, the prince of Ravka, and Wylan Van Eck, a member of the Dregs. They'll likely appear in a second season provided Netflix orders one.
Shadow & Bone premieres on Netflix on Friday, April 23.

When darkling was giving genya to the queen's household did he truly know what were king's intentions or was that a miscalculation on his part? He knew genya would be in danger but didn't see THAT coming at all.
I'll answer in the simplest way:
The Darkling is no clairvoyant, otherwise he'd be ruling Ravka by now.
I've wrote or reblogged a lot on this particular topic, for more you can just go through my Genya tag, or here are some specific posts: x, x, x, x, x.
Most of it boils down to three points:
Genya should've been safe under the Queen's protection.
Servants are something akin to furniture. Invisible as human beings. Why would the King want to fuck that, when he can have every single one of those perfumed, carefully maintained, soft-handed ladies of the Court? Or an actress! Opera singer! That's where royal mistresses usually come from. But no, this one doesn't want that, he likes defenceless, young, pretty mattresses to stick his cock into.
When it comes to it, not even the Darkling could refuse the King, should he pay him a visit at night. It's not about physical power, but political influence and the King has only Saints to answer to.

I never understood why genya staying there was in any way necessary though. Surely extraordinarily beautiful Grisha would have no problem on catching the eye of this one drunken foolish king. He could have easily removed Genya from there (in his own words he could have sent her away) and then sent some other grisha to seduce him/act as a spy. Or sent multiple to see whoever manages to catch his eye. Of all the problems they had, a lack of beautiful women was not one. Yes he gave her a choice, but she was so young and she wanted to impress him, not to mention revenge is a tempting offer. Her suffering was entirely unnecessary.
The problem lies in the King's preferences.
If he only wanted "extraordinarily beautiful" woman, I'm certain there are some among the usual classes, from which monarchs pick their mistresses. The fact he didn't feel the need to make even Genya official also speaks for itself.
This king doesn't want a willing woman, but helpless servant, who cannot possibly say no without repercussions.
He didn't want a sexual partner, but a victim.
Genya's also surprising, because she was a part of the Queen's household. Alexander III/Pyotr obviously doesn't mind crossing his wife, Fjerdan princess. If their royal family still had strong ties to her, Tatiana could cause decent trouble for being humiliated in such a way. Unfortunately at that point she also managed to cuckold him pretty publicly, so he decided it's worth the risk.
Seduction would be too obvious even for an idiot like A3/P. Besides, he despises Grisha. Either Genya truly caught his eye so well, he didn't mind he's sticking it into "a witch", or he went after her intentionally in retaliation for Tatiana's affair. There should also be a very good reason for presence of your hypothetical Grisha spy. Genya's obvious, but since there are no other Tailors, I can't think of anything that wouldn't be painfully evident. This generation of royal family bears no love for Grisha.
Genya's extraction would never be easy. Once she became the King's new favourite toy, nothing short of her death (true or staged) could get her out. Hell, even as the Queen's property, only the King could simply send her away.
From your wording, I assume you mind Genya's continued presence. For that I'd say she was already raped. That cannot be undone. Her age isn't specified, but she was maturing before the King approached her, so she was no child, especially once the deed was done. She didn't only have a choice to impress/avenge, as you're writing, but to regain as much control over her fate as she could. Not to mention in S&B, she's aware there are others like her among the servants. Why does it never occur to anyone she might not want to let more girls go through what she already did?!
I know current society likes to babify teenagers, but this is pseudo-historical setting, when teen's more likely to be expected to assume a role of an adult, than stay a child until they're in their twenties. Hell, they're drafted at sixteen. If she can decide to get herself killed, she can decide to make the fucker suffer.

Siege and Storm- Chapter 11 (Leigh Bardugo)
Assuming Alina's not wrong- how the hell can Nikolai have spies in Grand Palace, and then be all surprised his daddy's a rapist?! In previous book Genya says the worst thing about his assaults is that everyone knows. How come Prince Exile wasn't informed about King's frequent transgressions against his servants? Especially if there is an all- encompassing law against rape and Nikolai intends to get the throne through abdication of his predecessors?
Who is he lying to? Us or just himself?
That said, I'm curious how much of Tatiana's refusal to let Grisha near her husbands is healthy causion, and how much her Fjerdan upbringing?

Regarding Nikolai. it’s insane how the author and the fandom close their eyes and baby him. When he SA Alina, pushed her in a carriage so she could react, and then immediately gaslit her to think out was okay. He’s the one who actually used her and manipulated her to and succeed in getting the Ravkan crown. but the worst crime he has is the one where right after Genya tells him his father* and king is a rapist…..Nikolai rewarded the king. Nikolai covered up the king’s crime, made sure he received no trial at all, that no girls received justice, and to rub salt in the wound he gave the King a full expense paid retirement vacation with a “life full of luxury….safety” and even let the king choose where he would retire..oh sorry…LB calls it “exile.” So the King who never wanted to rule the nation, only wanted a life of luxury and attacking girls…gets a life of luxury far far away where he has no care or worry and he is free to attack any and all servants I’ve had in his luxury retirement. Leigh Bardugo should have re-read chapter 11 of ruin and rising. Rich white savior born with a silver spoon that manipulates, SA, and uses Alina go get in power let’s his father figure who literally SA’d genya and other girls go free and rewarded.
*father figure - publicly his father privately not really the bio dad And I call BS on the R&R proclamation that Nikolai didn’t know the king was a rapist. Nikolai was raised in the same halls, if the king’s reputation was so well known like LB keeps claiming it was in RoW then Nikolai would 100% know about it before he left for the military.
I have a problem with understanding Nikolai's actions.
It's caused by his moral alignment.
I simply cannot grasp how can someone put rules, established by other humans- therefore possibly faulty-, above preventing possible injustice. (Yes, I'm true neutral.) How can "a good" person be stopped by immaterial concept? If he believed there's some higher power, eventually judging all human actions, but he's an atheist!
What makes it more complicated, is his seeming moral flexibility. I'm not even halfway through Siege and Storm, and he doesn't seem bothered by lying, stealing, manipulation... is a piece of paper truly such a difference? Nobody wrote down rules about particular situations, so he can do whatever he pleases?
A bit of a hypocrite, isn't he?
... As he was helping me back into the coach, he slipped his arm around my waist. “Please don’t punch me,” he whispered. Then he yanked me hard against his chest and pressed his lips to mine. The crowd exploded into wild cheers, their voices crashing over us in an exultant roar. Before I could even react, Nikolai shoved me into the shadowy interior of the coach and slipped in after. He slammed the door behind him ... I turned on Nikolai and kicked him hard in the shin. He yelped, but that wasn’t nearly satisfying enough. I kicked him again. “Feel better?” he asked. “Next time you try something like that, I won’t kick you,” I said angrily. “I’ll cut you in half.” He brushed a speck of lint from his trousers. “Not sure that would be wise. I’m afraid the people rather frown on regicide.” “You’re not king yet, Sobachka,” I said sharply. “So don’t tempt me.” “I don’t see why you’re upset. The crowd loved it.” “I didn’t love it.” He raised a brow. “You didn’t hate it.” I kicked him again. This time his hand snaked out like a flash and captured my ankle. If it had been winter, I would have been wearing boots, but I was in summer slippers and his fingers closed over my bare leg. My cheeks blazed red. “Promise not to kick me again, and I’ll promise not to kiss you again,” he said. “I only kicked you because you kissed me!” I tried to pull my leg back, but he kept a hard grip. “Promise,” he said. “All right,” I bit out. “I promise.” “Then we have a deal.”
Siege and Storm- Chapter 11
This isn't gaslighting. It's another kind of manipulation, if anything. He's playing it down, but in his case I'd say it isn't caused by some malevolent intentions, but different view on the matter. He's playing a part. While he isn't repulsed by the idea of kissing Alina, he didn't do it for his personal enjoyment, but to cement their union in eyes of the people.
Alina, on the other hand, doesn't intend to become anything more than her own private person. She views the kiss only as a transgression against her.
Nikolai is a people-pleaser, who obviously displeased Alina. While he might be manipulating Alina so he doesn't have to deal with her anger, it might also be an attempt to make it better. Children often do this. I did a bad thing, but if we both agree it wasn't SO bad, it will get better.
His swift reaction outside the carriage was about preventing Alina to ruin the image he just painted. It's not hard to figure out she's quick to anger and much slower to think. He already tried to introduce her to the concept of being a public person. When pure theory fails, apply more practical approach?
This is another example of Nikolai "The Diet Darkling" Lantsov in action. Collar Alina to take over her world-changing abilities to end wars is absolutely despicable, while mere kiss to use her status of Living Saint for run on position of power's possible to overlook, because Nikolai's motivations are noble. I guess that's the difference between Royalty reaching for the Crown and serf reaching for the chance to live.
The rape confrontation feels weak and unsatisfying, thanks to NIkolai's lack of spine, or fixation on Ravkan law, depending on your POV. Apparently he acted according to their legal system. I have a half-written post on this, but since we're on the topic, I agree it's one on those examples, when law guarantees neither justice, nor prevention of future crimes, so instead of cheering for Nikolai's fairness, we're left upset with his decision.
“You will write the letter, and tomorrow you will leave on the Kingfisher. It will take you to Os Kervo, where you’ll be seen safely aboard the Volkvolny and across the True Sea. You can go someplace warm, maybe the Southern Colonies.” “The Colonies?” the Queen gasped. “You will have every luxury. You will be far from the fighting and the reach of the Darkling. You will be safe.”
Ruin and Rising- Chapter 7
Sure, it's exile, loss of power and prestige... but how is luxury a punishment? How is relocation to a peaceful place instead of constantly warring Ravka a punishment? And most importantly- how does it prevent the rapist from raping more servants? Or other helpless, young destitutes?
It's like sending a serial killer on a paid vacation, weapons of choice included.

Siege and Storm- Chapter 12 (Leigh Bardugo)
Because the greatest tragedy is to cooperate with the Darkling.
It doesn't matter Genya would still be a serf, it doesn't matter Grisha would still be widely distrusted, it doesn't matter ~other~ servants would suffer King's unwanted advances...
Besides, what does Alina know about Genya's life? She was shocked, when Genya called the Queen "old cow", she never seemed too invested in her life. The most we learn about it comes from The Tailor, story from Genya's own POV...
I guess whatever Queen did, it had to be horrible, if it forced another girl to support the Darkling...

Ok sooo, what is the king's name in the trilogy? In the quote he is Alexander the 3, yet in the show and all of the media based on the show (fanfiction and metas), he is Pyotr. What'd going on?? Why the change??
In books he's Alexander III Lantsov. The show likely changed the name to Pyotr so the audience doesn't confuse him with Aleksander- the Darkling. A move that might be understandable, yet it never fails to make me wonder how can even a casual viewer be so stupid they don't grasp the concept of several people sharing a name.
But nvm that...

I was looking through the Genya tags, and came across a post of yours from a while ago that I wholeheartedly agreed with (Genya have been the King's mistress taking advantage of his treatment of her) and it got me thinking:
That would've been an incredible opportunity for Genya and The Darkling to get a grisha in line for the throne. If she gets pregnant by the King then he would have an heir that's no more a bastard than Nikolai, but as a child of Genya would also likely be grisha as well. It would just be a case of getting rid of the others in line and Genya could be regent.
It's a personal headcanon of mine that Genya made the king infertile (out of spite or to protect herself I don't care) but I wouldn't deny that she would be capable of having a child with someone else and claiming it as the King's, especially with her tailoring abilities.
Genya, my beloved never-draining source of squandered posibilities...
Let's start from the end- huge yes for the infertility! While not exactly supported by canon, I like to believe since Genya knows about other servants suffering the way she does, she likes to help both out of compassion and to gain invisible allies. She might need to smuggle other girls to see a Healer, when royal STDs are concerned, but why not prevent unwanted pregnancies at source?
Now, realistically... if Genya were to assume position of official royal mistress, it would be tricky at best. The King's own opinions aside, the people would hardly accept Grisha so close to the throne, especially since some would think about possibilities of succession just like you did. We're talking about country, that's not burning Grisha on town squares, but its citizens grab weapons as soon as there is a tragedy to blame them for. Besides:
· “Did you see that?” - “Of course I saw it.” · “She looked right at you!” - “So she did.” ~ “They say Grisha girls can put spells on you.”
Overly attractive witch, seducing the Tsar, only to use her bastard to steal Ravkan throne?!
Recipe for a disaster.
But if we were to change the setting and make the masses less hostile, I'd love to see Genya on the throne.
