Branding in Seongsu (2024, South Korea)
Director: Jung Hun Soo
Writers: Choi Sun Mi & Jeon Seon Young
Mini-review:
Look, I'm not gonna say this was good, but it kept me engaged throughout. And it's all thanks to the two leads. They basically save the whole thing with their chemistry and their comedic chops. I was particularly impressed by Lomon, who went out of his comfort zone for this role and delivered in every single scene. The show worked better as comedy than anything else, since it was pretty funny at times. But yeah, whenever it tried to highlight serious issues, it ended up falling into the same old stereotypes. And some of the final twists made little to no sense. I don't regret watching Branding in Seongsu, though, cause the episodes were short and it never had time to get boring. But I do wish the writing and directing were as good as the acting, or less messy at the very least.

My guess? Young Ki is responsible for the accident and Sung Jun knows about it. Do Joon will eventually be out of the picture and Young Ki is going to get the CEO position in the end, so we will have to wait for the board meeting to see how that will happen.
I am not ready to see the downfall of Jin Yang Cheol. By downfall I mean going from a strong and imposing business man to a frail and weak old man. Nothing wrong with that, it's life and he has serious health issues, but looking at the preview and seeing him showing signs of dementia is truly heartbreaking (LEE SUNG MIN WITH HIS GENIUS ACTING).
I know he is not the best man around but the show really made us actually care for him a bit. All in all he is the antagonist of the show, but not really. He is an emperor who built his empire from scratch and wants someone to understand that. To understand the struggles he went through and what it takes to mantain that empire. Unfortunately, his first son and grandson can't grasp that idea, the second son only wants affection but does not have what it takes to take over, his only daugther is automatically out of the race and his fourth son was practically disowned. However, his youngest grandson does get it and their interactions are getting increasingly precious, even after knowing how ruthless JYC can be.

Reborn Rich
Year : 2022 | Country : KR | Nb of episodes: 16
My rate: 9/10
Synopsis :

During a power struggle between Jin Yang Cheol's children for control of the empire, Hyun Woo is ruthlessly betrayed and killed under the orders of an unknown member of the chaebol family. Miraculously he wakes up as a kid inside the body of the youngest member of the family – Jin Do Jun.
After he realizes what has happened, Yoon Hyun Wo plots to use his new “identity” to formulate a hostile takeover of the group – and punish the people who killed him. But, will the cold-blooded and money-hungry CEO of Soonyang Group, one who firmly believes in right of primogeniture, be so easy to win over or conquer? Will Hyun Woo be able to wrest the reins from Jin Yang Cheol's children? And what role will be played in all this by a dogged public prosecutor named Seo Min Young, nicknamed “Soonyang Group Grim Reaper”?
Main cast :
Song Joong Ki as Ji Do Joon / Yoon Hyun Woo
Lee Sung Min as Jin Yang Cheol
Shin Hyun Bin as Seo Min Young
Yoon Je Moon as Jin Young Ki
Jo Han Cheol as Jin Dong Ki
Kim Young Jae as Jin Young Ki
Kim Shin Rok as Jin Hwa Young
Kim Nam Hee as Jin Sung Joon
Park Hyuk Kwon as Oh Se Hyun
Tiffany Young as Rachel
My thoughts on this drama :
This is a drama that made we go What The Hell at the end. Like, really.
It's a masterpiece. As far as modern, cheabol themed dramas go, this is by far one of the very best. We're again dealing with some big money revenge plot but it is so well executed! Song Joong Ki aced his role. I'm still stuned by his performance.
Highly recommended if you wish to enjoy a fast paced, well built story with interesting characters.

Things to Never Say to People Who Just Came Out
Bit: I'm gayer. (It’s not a competition.)
Wonchul: You still owe me $45. (They do, but give them a minute.)
Dongjae: I knew you were gay the second you told me you were gay. (Although not wrong, there's no need to repeat what they just said to you, as everyone gets the point now.)
Yeonjae: In that outfit? (Not everyone comes out as stunningly as you.)
Sahyun: Hi gay, I'm dad. (Actually, this one is fine. Everyone loves a classic.)
Taeha: Would you like to go on record stating that for our organization's diversity initiative? (Come on. At least wait a week before swooping in with corporate requests.)
Gun: I was planning to come out this very moment, and you just stole my thunder 🙁 (Just wait a few days and come out some other time.)
Sewon: This has been so obvious ever since I started stalking you.

Reborn Rich episode 8 ✔️
I usually take notes as I’m watching, because I don’t want to forget something, but this time I was enjoying the episode so much I forgot to start taking notes.
Not much to say this time. I’m enjoying the flow of it. If I had to talk about something in this episode, then…. The wedding? Events keep happening in a different way than in Hyun Woo’s timeline, but the end result really remains the same and now I’m convinced of it. Another moment I loved from the wedding was when the camera went off for the family portrait That one snap of Do Jun smiling and his grandfather looking at him. That moment gave me chills. (And later we saw the full conversation behind it which makes that much sweeter.)
I didn’t expect Jin Yang Cheol to decide to give them a race for the succession so easily, but then again, things really haven’t been happening his way and now that he knows he’s running out of time really quickly…. In his heart he must want Do Jun to take over. I think he’s recognized him as the one that “takes after him the most” very early on, but because he’s wanted to continue the tradition of oldest takes it all, he didn’t want to admit it. He is to blame for how his children turned out to some degree, but they’re also really just greedy, spoiled bastards and I think he’s starting to realize that too. Before he’d blame himself for how they’ve turned out, but now he also sees that these are the people they really are inside and they’re not longer little kids to be disciplined.
I’m glad that Do Jun is running them around with this New Data Technology investment thing. For a second I had a scare Oh Se Hyun was really about to betray Do Jun, but then I remembered the note the driver was holding that said “New Data Technology”. There’s no way he would’ve heard that inside, Do Jun must’ve given him that note so he must’ve chosen Do Jun’s side after his “vacation”. I really want Do Jun to take revenge on Jin Hwa Young for what she did to his mother. Having already seen the preview for episode 9, I cannot wait for it.
And a big surprise! Jin Yoon Ki (Do Jun’s father) was not Lee Pil Ok’s son. Her words surprised me too. She told Yang Cheol that she didn’t raise Yoon Ki the same as her kids because of motherly love, but rather to protect Yang Cheol’s reputation, and that he should always remember that. I suppose she really doesn’t want a kid who is not hers to inherit it all. She wants to be good to them for the sake of what will people say, but she’s really the same as them inside. I don’t feel let down; I’m pleasantly surprised the show got me with her.
I think this is about it. I hope I haven’t forgotten something important. So far everything is more or less going the way I thought it would. With a few small exceptions. I’m really enjoying this.

Bel Ami. 6
Story: 5
Acting: 9
Chemistry: 8
Comparable to: Playful Kiss (kdrama) ; Cheongdamdong Alice (kdrama)
Ahhhh the kdrama where the storyline is absolutely batforking crazy and the main male lead’s character is written as the most egotistical narcissistic unforgiving tool. Like there’s no redeeming quality to him except that the actor who plays him, Jang Geun Suk, is good looking, which is essentially the whole reason for the character. The character is written as an ambitious man and wants to make a lot of money using his beautiful appearance. What’s double terrible about the character is he knows it and uses the woman around him, especially his childhood neighbor played by IU (awesome in this although can get annoying on how she caters to his every whim). Now here’s the thing the storyline is nutty and utterly ridiculous but for some reason I kept watching. I don’t know what it is, but yeah…..it’s one of those ones where you keep watching to see if it gets any worse but it’s still watchable. 🤷‍♀️

Reborn Rich episode 11 ✔️
Wow this episode was really something. I have less to say about it though, because I think what I said about the las episode it still valid for this one.
I’m not going to talk about Min Young anymore. My opinion remains the same, even more so after this episode.
I did almost guess who the culprit behind the car accident was. First I thought it was Sung Jun and Hyun Min that planned it, together. But she found out later on that it was him. The reason why I thought they did it together, is because I think they were behind Hyun Woo’s death as well. Sung Jun and Hyun Min’s relationship makes way more sense than Min Young and Do Jun’s to me. Their love/hate dynamic is something I thought would suit this show and I said I wanted such a relationship in my previous post. Now I can see it with them.
The rest of the episode was really just a lot of wholesome moments that I was longing for after so much drama. I love that Do Jun’s character has kept that calmness of a 40-year-old man from his previous life, but when so many exciting and dramatic events happen, his calmness begins to feel a little stifling.
I was surprised (but not?) that the driver, In Sook, saved Do Jun and the chairman. I hope his character lives and recovers. Although we haven’t seen him and Do Jun interact that much throughout the show, I get a sense of warmth thinking about the two. I could easily imagine what In Sook was feeling when he decided to sacrifice himself and save Do Jun, even though we haven’t seen that much relationship development.
What I was surprised by, was Do Jun’s father – Yoon Ki. I’m really glad he stepped up like that and told his siblings off, but I’m a little confused what’s happening with his movie business and is he actually managing both that and the hospital? I know logically they probably hired someone to manage it for them, but it would’ve been a little nice to see it, or have a hint of it.
Overall excited to see more of Do Jun’s family. I completely understand his mother’s worries and reasoning, logically I would agree with her in such a situation. But I still want Do Jun to just go ahead and do his thing with his parents’ full support. I love his family and I love his brother! Hyung Jun brings such a fresh energy and it’s a nice breather whenever he’s in a scene. We haven’t seen much of him either, but I love him so much. He’s probably the most precious and wholesome character in this show. He’s just a dude that wants to sing, loves his family and loves what he does, doesn’t need anything else (except Do Jun’s money, lol).
One thing I’m still a little bit confused about is – Was Do Jun born as Do Jun first, or as Hyun Woo? Because in his memory as Hyun Woo, when he remembered the photo of 4-2, he saw his own face. I originally thought (like from the very first episode), that Hyun Woo was actually Young Ki and Hae In’s son. Since Hae-In showed up and asked what happened to her son, I assumed the siblings did something to take him away from the succession picture, which doesn’t necessarily be murder. I thought maybe they somehow took him away from the family when he was young and he lived his life as Hyun Woo without knowing he’s Do Jun. Then why he got reincarnated as as Do Jun would make more sense too. After this episode though, I’m a bit shakey on that. While remembering about 4-2, he saw his own face and said “The reason why I don’t remember anything is because I died”. I’m really unsure of how the two overlap still. So, in some universe, the two lives happened simultaneously, for Do Jun to be able to restore a memory about himself, but in Hyun Woo’s life? But I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
The cherry on top for this episode was when the chairman took Do Jun’s hands. For the first time he was showing his feelings. Jin Yang Cheol kept looking for the one who resembled him the most in terms of values, not qualities. Which is something all of his three other children got wrong. All he wanted in the end was to have someone cherish Soonyang and grow it more, as it was the fruit of his long labor of a life. He desperately wanted it to be his oldest son and grandson, because those are deep rooted traditions that have even made it into law, in many countries across the world. He was conflicted about keeping those traditional values and breaking them to protect his own. In the end however, he came to face with the truth he couldn’t run away from – that Do Jun is the only one capable of carrying out his legacy the way he envisions it. I shed a single tear while he was holding Do Jun’s hands. He may not have been a good father, but he’s not a bad person and he’s a damn good businessman who always kept his eyes on his dream. A man’s life coming to an end with the end of a century. It’s bittersweet.
I’m excited for next episode. I know it’ll be sad to see the chairman like that. Such a strong man is suddenly riddled old and weak, terminally ill and mentally suffering. As a plot it’s a brilliant ending for his character, I think. Well, it’s not the end yet, but we can see it. Joong Ki is an amazing actor and his character is the main focus of the show, but my personal favorite might just end up being Jin Yang Cheol. Such a good, rich character (I don’t mean in money). It was a story about him just as much as it was about Hyun Woo/Do Jun and boy did he nail it.
I cannot wait for the end of the show and what it has in store for us. There’s only one other drama I’ve wanted to end sooner so I could have a finished story in my heart, this is a close second. Some people may disagree with me, but if the ending is wrapped up really good, I don’t want this drama to ever have a second season. I want a full story to be able to hold in my heart, or the feelings of it. A complete journey that deserves to end with Jin Yang Cheol.
