Notes: Yesterday, I became an aunt again to the most beautiful niece in the world (seriously, everyone. She is adorable. No, I am not biased, I am just being objective and stating the truth). And so, I'm fully in my baby feels, and what better way to celebrate her appearance with a burzek fix-it fic.
So this is her welcome to the world fic. Her brothers got artwork, but she's getting a more mentally stable aunt so I think she wins. And in a way, I'm happy it isn't the crack fic I'm going to write 🌸🌸🌸

Everyone said that it’s not often you get pregnant on birth control.
Everyone said it’s not often exes can be friends.
Everyone said it’s not often you can be comfortable co parenting and sharing a home with said ex.
Kim has been greeted with surprise and almost pandering tut tuts when she explained about her and Adam all through this pregnancy. She had almost came to expect it. Which is why, when the doctor said that it probably won’t do anything, and that only a few women actually ever have their water break naturally, and that women tend to have their first baby late, Kim really should’ve expected that she’d be one of the exceptions.
They had gone to the doctor early that morning. Kim is edging closer and closer to her due date, Alice being more and more active inside her. The doctor wasn’t too concerned with thinking that she’ll go into labour soon, repeating that first babies tend to take their time. Kim was fine with this. She’s uncomfortable, yes, big and feeling very much like she’s going to explode. But as the due date drew closer, she was becoming more and more emotional at the thought that her daughter wouldn’t be inside her, that she couldn’t protect her like that anymore.
On the way home, they stopped to grab—extra—breakfast, Kim being hungry again and Adam can always eat. Alice was making herself known, kicking and turning, Adam resting his hand on her belly whenever they were stopped in traffic, a smile on his face.
Kim was beginning to think that maybe people were right about one thing, that maybe they won’t be able to co parent. Not platonically, anyway. His smile twisted something in her and all she wanted to do was stroke her fingers across his jaw.
She settled for just entwining her hand with his.
The pregnancy, seeing their daughter grow inside her, preparing for her arrival, it has brought them closer. Especially when the hormones hit. There has been moments when the air between them is filled with that tension, the love between them palatable. But they’re not crossing that line.
In a very unlike them sort of way, they had the conversation about it. Both agreeing that they can see them doing this, having a relationship, being a couple raising their baby. But communication and keeping together has never been there strong point, Alice being why they’ve only just started to be successful in that way. And mixing up a baby in their problems, it’s not something they want to do. They were both messed up by their parents and the one thing they want is for Ally to be okay.
So they made an agreement to wait, to reassess when Alice is here, when they’ve got past those first months where even the strongest couples can fall apart in.
It doesn’t stop them absent-mindedly seeking each other out most of the time, always looping their hands around each other and cuddling on the couch and playing with each other’s hair. It doesn’t stop them, when Kim’s hormones turn to a hundred, from being intimate. And before Kim got so big, before sleeping is so uncomfortable for her she can barely stand having the cover on her, let alone another warm body lying beside her, it didn’t stop them from sleeping in the same bed.
They’re just friends, having a child, and are very much in love with each other.
It was after they grabbed the extra breakfast when Kim’s back starting to ache. At this point, she’s used to having aches, so she just tried to adjust herself in a more comfortable position.
Adam had noticed and when they got home he told her just to be comfy on the sofa, so that’s what she did.
The back pain was persistent, and Kim started getting her Braxton Hicks again. The first time she got them, Adam freaked out and called Sylvie—the blonde very patiently explaining it to him again. Now, Kim didn’t think to tell him, them being used to this, instead just ran her hand over her belly.
They had a few visitors stop by, to say hello to Kim now she can no longer go up the stairs to Intelligence. Jay and Hailey were first, then Trudy. They asked Trudy to be their daughter’s grandmother and she had already taken the role to heart. Mouch, too, being their baby’s honorary grandfather. He didn’t come to visit with Trudy, being on shift. Then, finally, Kevin came, Jordan accompanying him.
The Atwaters stayed longer than anyone else, but then they also had left—it once again just being Kim and Adam. And then it was just Kim, Adam getting the message that something they ordered for the baby was in the shop.
The pain in her back had tripled in intensity, and Kim found herself having to get up, needing to walk a little to see if that would help. She thought she’d walk to the bathroom, having to need to pee like she always does now.
But when she stood, Kim felt a flood of water and her eyes widened, as she quickly realised what had happened. That the pain wasn’t just back pain, that the Braxton Hicks was actually contractions. Having get so caught up in the possibility that her baby will be a bit late, Kim just accepted that this was fake labour signs.
Adam left, saying he’ll be back within the hour. Kim had been prepped that labour is long, and even though they had been told to hear to the hospital if her water broke, she waited for Adam to be back. She could’ve called him, but she didn’t want him to rush and get into an accident.
It’s only an hour, Kim had thought.
And forty minutes later, Kim kneeling on her bathroom floor, in intense pain, she regretted that thought. Because of course this would happen. That on top of everything, apparently Alice wanted to make a quicker appearance.
“Hey, darlin’! I’m back,” Adam calls to her and she could’ve cried in relief that he’s finally here; Kim had left her phone in the living room when the contractions hit, hard.
“Adam!” Kim calls back to him, not caring how urgent and distressed her voice sounded. Adam was instantly in the bathroom.
“Kim? Kim, are you okay?” He says as he gets there.
“I’m in labour,” She tells him, although as she looks at his face, she can tell he’s already gathered that. She must be a mess, on the floor, hot and sweaty, crying. But he doesn’t look like he’s even bothered, the shock fading fast and he’s leaping into action.
Adam kneels beside her, softly stroking back her hair, laying a kiss on her forehead. “It’s okay, darlin’. I’m here now.”
After her comforts her, indicating for her to take his hand as another contraction comes, Adam is fishing his phone out of his pocket, calling for an ambulance. Kim’s too far in to even bother wondering if he can drive her, that it’s better for Alice to come in their bathroom with towels all around them rather than in his car.
Although, both would prefer if she didn’t come before the ambulance.
It’s two minutes later Adam’s phone lights up with a text. We just got the call to your address!! Is Kim alright?
It reassured Kim—and Adam, really—that Sylvie is the paramedic who’s coming, them needing that familiar face at this scary, new time in their lives.
Kim’s labour was painful, intense, but short. Alice appears before the ambulance does, Adam and Kim staring in wonder and amazement at their new born daughter.
Adam made a joke that he’s glad he bothered Sylvie with so many questions, as he expertly wrapped up Ally, hugging Kim as she hugged their daughter. She’s still connected, and Kim still needs to deliver the placenta, and luckily it’s only two minutes later when Sylvie is here, and they greet the paramedic with a smile.
“Your goddaughter was a little impatient,” Adam says to her and Kim smiles at him, nosing into him slightly as she does it, love in her heart.
“Just like her father.” As if to prove that point, Adam leans down and gently kisses her, not caring what they agreed or that Sylvie is there. All that matters is them, is Alice, is the love they share; the love Alice is born into.
It isn't the perfect birth story. But nothing about their story was, imperfect relationship, imperfect conception, imperfect family. And that makes it all that more beautiful, that despite the imperfections, it is perfection without a doubt.
That Alice, and the love that surrounds her, love pure, whole and unselfish, is what defines that, redefines what it means to love, to live, their daughter the perfect amongst the imperfections.

Second Chances Chapter 24 - Once More With Feeling
Summary: Kim makes a realisation, but an accident jeopardises everything. The team finds out about Kevin's personal life. Series masterlist here.

“We are never eating sushi again. Ever,” Kim complained, sitting at her desk and trying to keep herself together. They’d both ended up with food poisoning from sushi that they thought was just on the right side of ok, but it wasn’t. Hers was lasting longer than Adams, the nausea almost constant.
“Yeah, it probably wasn’t a good idea to have discounted sushi for our anniversary dinner. You doing ok?”
“Yeah, fine. I haven’t actually been sick today. I’m fine apart from the nausea, it’s great.” She forced a smile, Adam staring at her.
“Fine, but if it’s still like this in a day or two, you need to go to the doctor, ok? I worry about you.” She squeezed his hand as he went back to his desk, getting back to running the search she was doing.
“Atwater, Kim, I need you to do a stakeout on a location. We think one of the ringleaders of Los Tiranos is staying there, it’s a chance to get the drop on them.” Hank gave the orders and Kim stood, swallowing hard as her stomach rebelled against the sudden movement.
“Sarge, can I go instead? Kim’s still recovering from the food poisoning we had earlier in the week, she can stay here running point.” Adam cut in, and Kim watched Hank’s eyes widen slightly at her pale face and slightly dishevelled hair.
“Yeah, Ruzek, you go. Kim stay there, do you need the day?”
“No, I’m fine. Thanks.”
She sat there getting texts from Adam about how bored they were, and texts from Kev complaining she wasn’t well because he was stuck in a car with an excitable Adam. It made her laugh at their ridiculousness. Detectives in an elite unit in CPD, but they acted like children. To take a break from the screens she walked into the bathroom, staring at her face in the mirror. Ally was hitting a not wanting to sleep spurt, so exhaustion was hitting hard. Adam was managing better with it than Kim, but they were both tired and stressed.
“Kim, thank God. Do you have a tampon?” Hailey asked, Kim grabbing one from her purse. And she realised the little toiletry bag she kept in her purse was still full. Kim couldn’t remember the last time she’d filled it.
“Fuck.”
“It’s ok, I can text Vanessa if you don’t, it’s fine.”
“No, no, here. Just crap. I need to check something.”
She pulled out her phone, opening her period tracker app. Since the mishap with Ally’s conception and not being sure she’d made sure to use the app consistently, but it was showing her last period was nearly six weeks before. And she was exhausted, and nauseous, and this was feeling all too familiar like when she was pregnant with Ally. She didn’t even need to take the test. She was pregnant again.
Hailey came out, washing her hands and looking at Kim closely.
“You ok? What’s wrong? Are you still sick?” Kim let out a laugh, running her fingers through her hair.
“Yeah, sick. Something. Can you cover my searches for thirty minutes? I need to run out.” The seriousness in her voice was clear, and Hailey just nodded.
“Sure. Kim, are you ok? You’re worrying me here.”
“I’m fine. I just thought of something that I need to do now, and if I don’t it’ll be on my mind all day. Thanks, Hailey.” Kim hurried out and put on her jacket, popping her head into Hank to let him know she was taking thirty for lunch.
It was a seven minute drive to the pharmacy, Kim staring at the rows of pregnancy tests in front of her. How did she know which to take? What to do? The choice was overwhelming and she grabbed two boxes, one that said it was digital and one with a good old fashioned plus sign. She grabbed two bottles of water from the fridge to drink to be able to take them, paying quickly and getting the way too long receipt. She popped the top of one bottle as she got into the car to get back to the precinct, chugging down the first water bottle by the time she returned, her pharmacy bag safely in her coat.
It took another thirty minutes for her to finish the last bottle and be ready to take them, going back into the bathroom. She ignored the looks from Hailey as she went back in, closing the door to the stall. This was not how she’d expected to take a pregnancy test, in the bathroom stall in work. She’d hoped to have Adam beside her, waiting in their bathroom at home with Ally sleeping in the next room. But now that she was so sure she needed the proof. She needed to know for certain.
Her phone buzzed, the three minutes were up and the two positive tests were exactly what she’d expected. Ally was going to be a big sister, she and Adam were having another baby. She was ecstatic about it.
Coming back out to the bullpen she settled back in, finding the LKA of their suspect and sending Hailey and Vanessa out to them. Jay stayed at his seat, looking across at her.
“You good?”
“Everyone’s asking me that today. I’m fine, Jay. Just need to shake this bug, that’s all.” She smiled up, the first real smile she’d had in a while.
“Ok, just making sure. Need to make sure my partner’s doing good.” As he finished speaking their radios flared to life, Adam’s voice coming through.
“50-21 Ida, we are in pursuit of the suspect’s vehicle, requesting backup immediately going down South Island. Suspect vehicle is a blue Honda Accord, Illinois license plates Echo Victor Seven Three Five Eight Nine. That’s Echo Victor Seven Three Five Eight Nine. We are in a high speed purs—“ Adam cut off, and they could hear squealing tires and the crunch of metal, Kim’s adrenaline on high alert.
“50-21 George, requesting immediate response from 50-21 David and 50-21 Ida. Atwater, Ruzek, come in.” The tension was clear in Jay’s voice.
There was silence on the radio until they heard a patrol officer’s designation come across “21-14, we have a 10-1, officers down. Requesting three ambulances immediately for two detectives, one offender.”
Kim sank back into her seat, her hand over her mouth and eyes wide. No. Adam had to be fine. He needed to be. They were about to have another baby. They were going to grow their family, they’d just had their fourth anniversary and she was still eating from the fruit basket he’d gotten her. He’d be fine.
“Kim. Kim. Kim!” She shot up at her name being called, Hank and Jay standing there looking at her. “C’mon, we’re going to Med to wait for them. I’m gonna call Will to let him know it’s Kev and Ruz coming in. There’s no news yet, but we’ll get some soon. Ok?”
She nodded, still in shock. “I…I have to call Al. I can’t leave the hospital and Ally has to get picked up. He can do it. We’ve talked about if we died on the job, not something like this.”
“Ruzek, c’mon.” She stood at Hank’s words. “Let’s get to Med, we’ll wait for them there. With Halstead looking after the two of them they’ll be fine. Let’s go.”
She followed them down the stairs, still feeling dazed and shaky. Kim held onto the railing, and Jay grabbed her arm. When they reached the desk Trudy looked across at them, worry clear on her face.
“Ruz and Kev were in a car accident. We don’t have any news yet.” Jay gave the news, Kim swallowing every time she heard it.
“Let me get cover, I’m coming behind. Kim, do you need me to get Ally?”
“I’m gonna call Al to do that and meet us there. We’re going to Med.” Hank spoke, escorting Kim out of the building.
She didn’t remember the drive to the hospital. She didn’t remember what Jay said to her, not even what was on the radio station that played. All she could think was she was supposed to be with Kev. She should have been in the car when the crash happened. It should have been her, not Adam. She stayed focused on the radio in the car, waiting to hear someone say something.
“Ambulance 61, two minutes out from Med, CPD on board.” It was Sylvie’s voice she heard as they were getting out of the car.
“C’mon, we’ll get inside first and see who’s there.” Jay hurried her in, Kim’s hand going over her stomach as they walked, Will waiting for them just inside.
“Atwater’s in 61, they’re on the way in now. I talked to Sylvie over the radio, it’s just taking time to get Ruzek out of the car but Severide’s on it. Once he’s out they’ll be bringing him here. When I have information I’ll let you know.”
The ambulance bay doors opened and Kim could see Kev on the gurney being brought in, Jay’s arm firmly around her as they watched their friend be wheeled straight into a trauma room. Soon they were directed to the waiting room, staking out the chairs closest to the door so they could be there. It didn’t take long for Trudy to arrive, Hailey and Vanessa coming in just after. They formed a ring around Kim, whose eyes didn’t move from the ambulance bay doors.
She spotted familiar light brown hair and stood, realising it was her husband being pushed in. And Adam didn’t look good. There was blood over his face and clothes, gauze taped to his arm and chest, and his leg was pointing the wrong direction.
“Oh god, I’m gonna be sick.” Kim ran to the washroom, bringing up water and stomach acid, hugging the toilet. Even in the stories she’d been told after her shooting she hadn’t looked that bad, and she’d nearly died. Adam couldn’t die. They needed him.
When she came back out the room had begun to fill with cops, all giving Kim pitying glances. She kept her head high, badge around her neck as she went back to the team.
“Al has Ally, he’s bringing her in if you want. Or we can get him to bring her home, does he have a key?” Hank’s voice was soft, and that scared Kim more. She didn’t want him to be soft, she wanted him to be firm and tell her it’d be fine that of course Adam was going to be fine. But they both knew that it would be a lie, they had no idea. But if she was going to lose him, she needed her daughter there. She could be strong for Ally, stronger than if she had to be there on her own.
“Bring her in.”
It didn’t take long for Al to arrive, Ally running in ahead of him.
“Mommy!” She yelled, Kim scooping her up and pressing kisses to her rosy cheeks.
“Hey Baby, did you have fun with Grandpa Al?” Kim was aware of the eyes on the two of them, but focused just on her daughter. That she could do.
“Yeah! Daddy?” She looked up with Adam’s eyes, Kim’s breath catching in her throat.
“Daddy has a boo-boo. Uncle Jay’s brother is gonna make him better.” She knew Ally couldn’t understand, but she knew boo-boo and Daddy, and she was very aware of her aunts and uncles.
“Jay? Hiiiii Jay!” She turned and waved at him, Jay opening his arms for the squirming toddler.
“Hey Ally-cakes. Wanna play?” He looked at Kim who nodded, and he brought Ally to the kids toys in the corner. Al took his vacated seat.
“You ok, kid?” His warm hand over Kim’s made her feel better as she sat waiting.
“Better she’s here. But the longer it takes for them to come out, the worse I feel.” She took a breath, letting it out slowly. “I want to cry and I want to get a hug and I want to scream, but I have to be unit member Kim right now, not wife Kim. It’s a fine line.”
“We’ve got you. Don’t worry about that.”
They stayed like that until Ally announced she needed to be changed. Kim went to bring her, but Trudy stopped and told her to stay there.
“If they come in with news they won’t tell anyone till you’re here. This way we find out fastest.”
She was staring out the doors, barely listening when Jay’s voice caught her attention.
“Is Kim ok? I mean, Adam wasn’t this bad when she was missing a couple of years ago, I’ve never seen her like this.”
“He couldn’t tell any of us he was worried when she was missing. She’s holding together, and she’s doing a damn sight better than I think any of the rest of us would.” Al hissed, squeezing her hand. Kim turned to look at Jay.
“I’m not ok. I just need the news. The longer we’re stuck waiting, the longer I have to think about the worst happening…it’s harder and harder. I need to know.” She was silent, but the door opened and a paramedic walked in.
“They said I could wait here for news about Kevin?” Kim kind of recognised her, but they were all confused. “I’m Violet…we’ve been dating for a month or so. I got called to the scene, but Sylvie had already left with him. I brought his partner in, but I need to know how Kev’s doing before I leave.”
Al stood, offering his chair to Violet. “Welcome to the waiting room. Everyone here’s from his unit, I used to be but I’m retired. Halstead shouldn’t be long.”
“You brought Adam in?” Kim’s voice was tight, and Violet turned to look at her.
“Are you Kim? He was mumbling that Kim would kill him.” Her words got a huff of laughter from the surrounding cops.
“Yeah, I’m his wife.”
“He’s badly injured, but we got him here quickly. I don’t know anything more than that.”
They sat in their group, waiting for news. Finally the glass door opened and Will walked in, everyone standing to greet him.
“Kevin’s going to be fine. He’s got a sprained wrist and some cuts and bruises, but he got lucky. The impact was on Ruzek’s side of the car.” Kim gasped, forcing herself to stay standing. “We’ve taken Adam up to surgery. He’s got a broken leg, some broken ribs and some internal trauma. He’s also got cuts and bruises on his arms and face from the impact. Rhodes is checking out his liver and spleen, it looks like there’s some fluid there so we just want to be sure that he’s going to be ok there. He’s in more serious condition, he’ll probably have a night in the ICU, but we’re hopeful.”
It hit Kim like a freight train. Adam wasn’t out of the woods. They were hopeful. It wasn’t that she could go see him, he was up in surgery.
“How long will they have him up there, Will?” Kim was proud of how even her voice was.
“We’re thinking two hours, but it could be longer. It depends on what he finds. I know how this is going to sound, but don’t worry about the length of the surgery unless it starts hitting four hours. Rhodes is going to check for fluid, make sure any lacerations are closed, and then he’s going to check all the organs to make sure Adam won’t need any extra surgeries. It’ll take time.”
“Thanks.” She wrapped her arms around the doctor who’d given her the best and worst news of her life, Will returning the hug.
“It’s Adam, he’s strong. I’ve got faith in him.”
Trudy arrived in then with Ally, and Kim put her mothering face on, picking up the girl.
“Daddy’s still getting looked after, but he’ll be ok in a while, Baby. Did you have lunch?”
“Yeah!”
Kim sat down with Ally on her lap, pulling out her phone and opening a book for her on the kindle app. They’d pulled Ally out of daycare before nap time, and she was getting cranky and tired. As the noise from the cops who were there waiting began to grow while Kim was reading, Voight glared at them to hush. But finally Ally started sleeping, so Kim put her daughter down on an armchair, her jacket over Ally to keep her warm.
It didn’t take long for Kev to come into the waiting room, relief flowing through everyone as he walked in. Kim watched as he wrapped his good arm around Violet, holding her close and pressing a kiss to her forehead. Even with her worry for Adam she grinned seeing the two, the way they just fit together reminded her of she and Adam. But once he let Violet go he came over to Kim, who just hugged him keeping his sprained wrist away from her.
“Kim, I was driving, I’m sorry. I don’t know what happened. I didn’t know this would happen, I’m sorry.” She stood back and looked straight up at him.
“You have nothing to say sorry about. Absolutely nothing, I don’t blame you. You’ve done the defensive driving course, you’ve trained people in it. You drove me around most of our days in patrol. I trust you. This isn’t your fault.”
They found him a chair beside Violet, and Kim realised she needed to eat something. Needed to do something. She had at least an hour until they came back about Adam, so she stood and walked over to Hank.
“I need ten minutes out of here, away from everything. Can you look after Ally? I just…I need to be able to be wife Kim instead of unit member Kim.”
“Go for it. I’ll call if we get news before you’re back.”
Kim walked out of the small room they’d led everyone waiting for Adam into, watching the mass of cops who were around the building waiting for news. After everything that had happened with Bob, part of Kim had always wondered that if anything like this had happened would they turn up for either of them. It was proof, CPD showed up for their own.
Natalie was walking back to the ED as Kim came out, but made a beeline for the detective when she saw her.
“Any news?”
“He’s still up in surgery, nothing for the moment. Nat…I did a home pregnancy test today and it’s positive. Adam doesn’t know yet, are you able to make sure everything’s ok? Just with the stress of today, I’m terrified something could have happened.” The doctor’s face softened, a smile on it.
“Any cramps? Bleeding? Anything feel unusual?”
“Nothing. It feels the same, but I’m so anxious over it.”
“Come with me.”
Natalie led her into the ED and into one of the bays, pulling a portable ultrasound into the room. Kim lifted her shirt and pulled down her jeans slightly to let Nat get the best view, and the baby was visible on the screen. They were tiny, smaller than even the first ultrasound she’d had with Ally, but the baby was there and visible and it made Kim so happy. Nat flipped a switch, and she could hear the heartbeat, racing along, clear as could be.
“If Adam asks, this never happened. But I couldn’t lose both of them in one day. I’m not strong enough to lose one of them, let alone two.” Nat was the only person who knew the pain Kim would have felt, and squeezed her hand.
“You’ll get there. Head on back to the waiting room, and if I hear anything I’ll come in to tell you.”
Kim felt lighter walking in. Their baby was ok. Adam was going to be ok. It’d work out. Because even though Adam didn’t know about this new baby, Kim knew he’d never leave her alone with Ally.
It was another forty minutes in the waiting room, Ally sleeping soundly and everyone quiet. Kev and Violet sat at one side of Kim, Trudy on the other holding her hand. The time moved both achingly fast and terrifyingly slow, but Connor Rhodes entered the waiting room, Kim standing as he did.
“Detective Ruzek?” He asked, Kim stepping forward.
“Yes?”
“First things first, he came through surgery well. We found some lacerations on his liver and were able to patch them up. He had a cut to his splenic vein that was causing the bleeding, but it was repaired and it’s holding perfectly. Apart from the surgery his left tibia is broken in one place. He broke four ribs, and one of them pierced his lung so we had to put a chest tube in. The ribs are stable, but the tube is in for support until we can make sure that everything is drained, it’ll come out tomorrow or the next day. Apart from that he’s got a pretty bad cut to his upper arm that was deep, it required some stitches where metal from the frame cut him. His face is bruised and scraped, but he doesn’t have any head trauma. He’ll be in ICU for the night, but after that it’ll be three or four days here and he should be home. We’ve moved him to ICU, you can go up now.” The room was able to relax, and Kim went to pick up Ally, half asleep in her mother’s arms.
“How many can go up?”
“You and one other. You can rotate out people while it’s happening too, if that’s easier. We don’t allow kids as young as your daughter up there. There’s a lot of tubes, and it might be scary for her. She can see him when the tube is out and he’s in a normal room.”
“Kim, let me take her,” Hank held out his arms, Ally going easily into them.
“Han?” She asked, rubbing her eyes as Hank soothed her back to sleep.
“Al? Will you come up? Everyone else decide when…I’ll be back down later to take Ally home and more can go then.”
“Don’t worry about her. I’ll take her home with me tonight, we’ll keep her happy and safe. Adam needs you now.” She took the one armed hug from Hank, holding onto him for a moment before kissing Ally’s forehead.
“Thanks, Hank. Everyone. I couldn’t have done this without you all.”
They followed Connor to the ICU room where Adam lay, Kim’s heart in her mouth as she saw her husband lying there. He was so still. Adam was never still. Even when he was asleep, he tossed and turned, the only time he didn’t was if they were curled up together. He never lay on his back. He never stayed so still, so stiff.
His leg was in a cast, the white plaster showing on his sallow skin. She could see where he was bandaged with stitches, and the tube with blood dripping slowly out of it into a container from his chest. There was the start of a black eye on his face, and the IV was delivering blood and fluids to him. She barely recognised him as Adam.
The chair was the same side as his hand without the IV, and Kim sat there, holding his hand loosely, Al’s hand on her shoulder.
“What do I tell Ally? She knows he’s got a boo-boo, but she doesn’t…how do I tell her?” Kim’s voice was low, pleading for advice.
“I don’t know. You just tell her that you love her and Adam loves her, and we’ll all do the rest. I just wanted to see him, I’m gonna bring her home with me in a few minutes. She needs more than being in the hospital, but you need to be here. We’ve got you. You asked three of us to be her grandparents for a reason, and the rest of the unit is there for you too. Let us help.”
“Thanks, Al.” She was quiet for a moment before the words that kept running through her mind came out. “It should have been me. I’m still getting over food poisoning, Adam volunteered to go instead. I should have been in the car. Not him.”
“You know as well as I do that even knowing what’s happened he’d have made the same decision a million times over. He’s protective of you, he wouldn’t risk anything happening to you.”
He stayed for a few more moments before leaving with a hug to Kim and a squeeze of Adam’s arm. She could see the worry on his face for her husband, and she appreciated it.
Nobody came up to them, and Kim sat there, watching his monitor as it beeped with every one of his heartbeats. He was alive. He was there. And that’s all Kim could care about. He was there for her and Ally and their new baby, and he’d get to find out about them. She lifted up his hand, pressing a kiss to it gently.
“You need to wake up soon, ok?” She asked, staring at his face. Kim didn’t know how long it took, but she slowly watched his eyes flutter open, a small smile on his face.
“Adam? Can you hear me?”
He coughed, groaning slightly as he focused on her.
“Kim.”

25 - How do they see themselves 5 years from today?
I think Kim doesn't know how to see herself five years in the future. She sees herself with a thirteen year old Makayla, but everything else is blurry. She wants to be married, she wants to have a family around her, but the with who she's still not sure of. Except in the quiet of night she'll admit she wants it with Adam, but she doesn't know if she's ruined any possibility of that for them and it kills her every time she thinks about it.
26 - Do they have any plans for the future? Any contingency plans if things don’t workout?
She tries to plan, but she's seen how planning doesn't always make things happen. Her biggest one is she wants to take the detective's exam, but she's also aware that if she does she may spend more time at work. She's already basically doing detective work though, so she should get paid for it.
28 - Who do they see as their best friend? Their worst enemy?
Kevin Atwater is her best friend. He's her brother, her friend, her shoulder to cry on. She doesn't tell him absolutely everything - his friendship with Adam means she doesn't want to put him in the middle of their interpersonal relationship - but he knows everything that makes Kim, Kim. She doesn't really have enemies. If she had to pick someone she wished she hadn't listened to as much and had treated as less of a friend, it's Sean Roman. She traces back a lot of what she dislikes about her life to listening to him.
33 -Concept of home and family?
Family for Kim isn't blood. She's not close to Nicole anymore, she's not really close to Zoe, and she barely talks to her parents. Her unit was her family until Makayla came along, and now she's the focus of Kim's home and family. But it's like Kim said - she was going to have a baby with Adam, and no matter what, that makes him her family. And even with whatever happens between them he's always going to be a huge part of her family and who she loves.
