This One Song… Noble Rot on Casting No Light
Tell you what – we love hearing from artists when things go right. We equally love hearing from artists when things go dreadfully wrong. A song that was a piece of piss, written in 20 minutes? Or years in the making and a bastard to write? Whether it’s a song that came together through great duress or one that was smashed out in a short amount of time, we’re getting the lowdown from some of our…

I would not really call Candy Claws shoegaze. Many of the reviews mentioned this - yes the vocals sound shoegazy, but the music isn't anywhere close.
"Ceres & Calypso in the Deep Time was the 4th album from this Fort Collins, Colorado band. Members of the band later formed Sound of Ceres (Joyful Noise Recordings) with members of The Apples in Stereo and The Drums.
This album is a concept album developed with the help of poet Jenn Morea. The album tells the story of a white seal named Ceres and a little girl named Calypso traveling through the Mesozoic Era. The music does give one the sense of a wondrous world and story. To me the music does recall the work of any number of Elefant 6 bands (i.e. Of Montreal or The Apples in Stereo) and MGMT.
This is a 10-year anniversary release and comes with a bonus CD. It is being reissued by the original label - Twosyllable Records.

Greg Saunier — We Sang, Therefore We Were (Joyful Noise)
Tumblr media
youtube
As ¼ of noisy indie-rockers Deerhoof, drummer Greg Saunier has decades' worth of experience in frenetic music as fun as it is difficult (if not more so). Across hundreds of other recordings, he's hidden himself away joyfully. Now, with the encouragement of his bandmates, he finally has his own solo outing, We Sang, Therefore We Were. Deerhoof fans won't be surprised by the sound here — it plays much like you'd expect a side project from the band to do — but they will likely be taken by Saunier's multi-instrumental prowess and songwriting glee.
The album comes from restlessness and anger, but more than anything, Saunier's wry playfulness comes through. He's witty and funny and while some of these lyrics may push toward the absurd, there's a deep seriousness running through the album, which stops just short of being a full-on concept record. Much of the record considers our relationship to the earth, or how we think about either ourselves or the natural world. Single “Grow Like a Plant” takes a somewhat comical look at the topic, suggesting that humans (and animals) aren't inherently more special than plant life. Saunier sings, “Meate only thinks it thinks” [sic], highlighting the feeling that we don't really know what we know.
As much as the album can sound wild at times, Saunier's deep thoughtfulness (unless he only thinks he thinks) repeatedly comes through. In “Not for Mating, Not for Pleasure, Not for Territory,” Saunier sets himself up as “the 500-celled creature, 500-celled creature / I am not, I am not / No 499 creature, no 501 creature.” With that phrase, he oddly posits himself as the simplest multicellular integrated organism (happily an algae and not “meate”). At that stage of development, he can play, cry and shriek, but Saunier the artist can also undermine the whole work by adding, “Goes the song ironically.” The whole enterprise of We Sang, Therefore We Were seems to undercut any sort of epistemic stability we might think we have (in which case singing outclasses thinking, because only extent beings could have sang).
All of this destabilizing comes through a musical approach not dissimilar to Deerhoof's, which makes sense. There's a manic sense of time and jagged guitars, but clear melodies run through the songs. He plays with classical music to end the record and digs into musical theory elsewhere. His own comments suggest a mix of Nirvana and Captain Beefheart, a goal he achieved. Ultimately, though, the record isn't only about theory or deconstruction, but about the joy of playing this music and of the epiphanies art can lead us to. “Playing Tunes of Victory on the Instruments of Our Defeat,” before swinging toward classical, challenges us to pause in the chaos and take stock of how we live (whether animal or vegetable). Saunier may play with irony and misdirection, but he sounds earnest when he sings, “So when you say goodbye to someone / Do you ramp down your love till the adieu? / Or, do you treasure every last moment? / Doing things healthy, fun, and rewarding?” You might not want to be meat, and you might not know if you can think what you think, but you can always sing, and you can always find the rewards in whatever this life is. Saunier blasts along to help his listeners do just that.

New Video: SUUNS Share Sludgy and Shoegazy "Wave" @suunsband @JoyfulNoiseRecs @pitchperfectpr
Montréal-based experimental rock outfit SUUNS— founding members Ben Shemie (vocals, guitar) and Joe Yarmush (guitar, bass) with Liam O’Neill (drums) — can trace their origins back to 2007: Shemie and Yarmush got together to make some beats, and it quickly evolved to a few songs. The duo was joined by O’Neill and Max Henry (keys) to complete the band’s first lineup. The band signed to Secretly…

84: Yonatan Gat & Gal Lazer // Physical Copy
Tumblr media
Physical Copy Yonatan Gat & Gal Lazer 2015, Joyful Noise (Bandcamp)
I have been pretty thoroughly on something each time I’ve seen Yonatan Gat, the Tel Aviv-born guitar matador who has become a cult figure due to his smoldering small combo stage shows. Gat and his typical trio or quartet like to set up in the middle of the venue, upending the usual artist-on-stage, plebes-on-the-floor dichotomy. Multiple times I’ve seen audience members helping hold up a cymbal stand that won’t stay upright, or gaping at Gat’s fretboard from over the guitarist’s shoulder, privileged to be the second head of a virtuoso. Gat’s music is loud, loose, and incantatory, predominantly instrumental punk/psych/passport rock rave-ups, occasionally interrupted by Gat’s drowsily romantic vocal interludes.
The first few times I saw him I was just starting to experiment with MDMA and acid, and I would spend the sets torn between my desire to lose myself in the music, and to write every liquid thought sloshing in my head. As a result, I “watched” a lot of the show through my phone’s notes app, standing next to the band trying to write as improvisationally as they played. I’ve just opened up one of those documents for the first time in years, from a Toronto gig accompanied by the dream trio of Gal Lazer on drums (AKA Gladys Lazer), Sergio Sayeg on bass (AKA Sessa), and Thor Harris on percussion and vibes. What follows are some excerpts from ten pages of very stoned responses, lightly edited for embarrassment.
youtube
The drummer’s so close it feels as though I could ghost through his back, talk to his array of golden plates easily as I tell my own hand to close round the throat of a flower, the handle of a watering can.
Check the bassist too, in his immaculate linen suit. When I saw him a year ago he wore the exact same outfit. It’s hard to imagine him ever taking it off— the white cloth just turns translucent as he soaps himself in the shower, becomes opaque again in the tumble-dry that fluffs his hair. White, on that note, seems to have the fashion diktat for the tour, undoubtedly conceived of by the singer under the influence of whatever sun rises in his brain that incinerates embarrassment, and a modicum of choice hash.
I’m one to talk: I’m so high my right buttock is trembling to the music of its own accord.
(If I were as gorgeous as the balding Shireborn playing vibes, I wouldn’t care about the black leather fanny pack marring my aesthetic either.)
The guitarist holds the neck upright, the way you do when a tough part in Guitar Hero hits, but for him, it’s like when you want to talk to someone with your mouth to their ear, while the foot traffic splits unnoticed around you.
Most times this part of the show is just jerking off— do you remember Richie Sambora? He was in Bon Jovi and played like Joe Perry sealed under a film of cellophane, like mushrooms priced to move. That guy jerks off; this deserves the longer word in Latin. There’s a drum solo too and people clap, and for the first time ever, not merely because it’s over. My carrier informs me my new plan has begun, with a whole new block of data to bore through. The singer does his sexy thing in a language made foreign by layers of mystic reverb. He introduces the players in long bars of well-meant fuzz.
Tumblr media
"Shireborn" Thor Harris: Perhaps more dwarfkin?
And so on! Anyway, at the show I’d sworn up and down not to buy any merch (was broke!), but as the rolling waves of instant nostalgia about the like ephemerality of experience continued to smash me in the face like a toddler trying to wade into the ocean, I became fixed on the title of this little Steve Albini-produced single: Physical Copy. An answered prayer, something designed to last! Jump-cut to 2023 and I can’t find the fucking thing for this review, so I’m streaming it and still remember everything fine without the tactile reminder. It’s good, but don’t shop on drugs and be careful what you write is I guess the message of this post, oi vey.
84/365
Encore
if my ears are not ringing am I hearing at all? tinnitus is the air thick with angels.
I part their unseen ranks like a curtain of plankton, eardrums resounding to their pitchy carols.
I don’t know if it’s true this tingling is the last time I'll ever hear this sound; if it is, let’s say the tone was burnt up reentering the world from the silence of memory.

Deerhoof - “Wedding, March, Flower”
Tumblr media
A rare ballad within the Deerhoof sonic multiverse, “Wedding, March, Flower”, the latest preview from the experimental art rock band’s new album, Miracle-Level, hears Greg Saunier on lead vocals, hushing words written by Satomi Matsuzaki, Between a tender piano played by Saunier and Satomi plotting its drum line, the listen moves with an understated beauty even as it bouquets something grander in the big picture.

REBLOGS ARE APPRECIATED, Enjoy!

The recording starts off with a black screen and shuffiling noises, after about a couple a seconds the video clears up to show a you. Sitting across from the camera in a dimly lit restaurant booth. "Jean, what are you doing?" "Shh, it's a surprise. Okay, what's your name?"
You look at him dumbfounded. "You're fuckin' with me, right?" He smacks you hand that lays on the table lightly. "Language, now answer the question. And look at the camera too." You scoff, rolling your eye's with a smile before doing as told, "My name is [first & last name], soon to be [name] kirstein...hopefully." "Alright." Jean says from behind the camera in a warning tone, you giggle. "Okay, next question, where are we right now?" The camera shifts upward a little to get a better view of you. "We are at [favorite restaurant]." "Why is it special to you?"
You smile fondly, the restaurant that you were sitting in currently is where Jean took you for you're first date and where he asked you, officialy, to be his girlfriend. "It's special to me because this is where i first fell in love with you." He smiles with warm eyes. "I love you too. Now how far along are you in you're pregnancy?" "About 5 months." "How old are you?" "Okay, why are you interro-" Before you could finish your sentence you hear someone, probably a restaurant employee, singing happy birthday off camera. Soon a plate with you favorite dessert was sat in front of you, Jean joins the server in singing happy birthday.
Let's just say it wasn't the greatest, but it was a sweet gesture. They clap as you blow out the candle. Your sever goes back to the kitchen as you inspect the plate. "Did you call in before hand? Cause there is no way they just decided to make this for me." you say lowly, looking at him suspiciously. "Don't worry about it." He takes one of your hands and kisses your knuckles softly. There was a slight tremble to his hold but you decided to pay no mind to it.
Looking back down at your plate you notice something written on it in chocolate and in cursive. Turning the plate slightly you see the words clear as day, 'will you marry me?', your eyes widen in shock. You stay like that for a minute or two before joyful tears well up in your eyes, hand slowly creeping up to cover wobbling lips.
You look up to find Jean holding open a black velvet box, a beautiful silver ring with a oval shaped moonstone in the middle, diamonds resting around it, sits in the middle. He smiles nervously as you take it all in. Tears stream down your cheeks once you've finally processed it. You shake your head before letting out a tear-choked "Yes." His eyes light up as he smiles harder, "Really?!" "Yes!" He practically jumps across the table as he kisses you, softly and affectionately. Putting the ring on your finger gently.
The 'play' button pops up as the recording ended. "Mommy pretty" your daughter, Nova, spoke with her mouth full, turning herself around in her chair. Golden eyes staring back at him, seeming brighter due to the early morning sunlight. He smiles softly, "I agree." "You made breakfast?" Jean whipped his head around to you.
Rubbing the sleep from your eye. A blanket wrapped around your shoulders, shielding you from the chill of the apartment. "Mommy!" Nova hopped down, giddly racing to you and hugging you. "G'morning.", you mumble. Jean stood up from his seat, walking over and kissing your cheek. "I already made your plate. Just go sit at the table." His hand on your lower back as he lead you to the table. As you shuffle to the table Nova follows you, telling you all about the video.
"I didn't know you recorded that." you said lowly as he places the plate in front of you. "I wanted to keep so i could remeber it perfectly." He kissed you cheek before sitting back down.

Kavus Torabi is a London, England based musician who's been part of the music landscape for over two decades. And while that may be true, it's also undeniable that his influences go back further. Think Syd Barrett in the 1960s and The Dukes of Stratosphear (the sound of the vocals specifically recall Andy Partridge) in the 1980s. It also reminds me of The Bevis Frond.
In other words, "The Banishing" has its feet firmly planted in the realm of psych-pop. And while this is only his 2nd release under his name, the music has a much older soul and shows signs of a meticulous musician with an attention to detail.
This looks to be issued on Torabi's own Believers Roast label. It should be noted that Torabi was on a 3 band digital release on Joyful Noise Recordings.

I am, as you may know, a Fanfic Monster. I love my KnY fics and, as you may know, have devoted many, many, many hours to them over the years. However, I started a text-heavy job and have not had the brain power leftover on the weekends to be able to write much, much less be able to do art of much quality.
However, I had the itch to do more with my fics this weekend. If I cannot nice art for the existing ones, and I don't have the brain to write news ones well... I have a voice! I'll record my own fics, if people like listening to fics stolen and read by bots. Why let bots do what would be more fun to do myself?
But then I realized after a joyful day of recording about 45,000 words of fanfic that: 1. My mic quality doesn't cut out background noise 2. I don't feel like doing my eager attempt at sound editing 3. I don't feel like learning how to do video editing 4. I don't remember my password to a YouTube account that doesn't have my name on it 5. I am lazy
But was it a joyful day anyway? Yes.
