When you think big, there’s no substitute for resources. Alto saxophonist and composer Steve Lehman’s ideas are typically broad and deep, but Ex Machina is especially massive. The project combines big band jazz, spectral composition, and interactive electronics. Any one of these elements takes study and skill to master, and while Lehman has the instrumental chops and integrative intellect grasp the parts, it takes a lot of time in a well-stocked kitchen to assemble them all into something that isn’t just a lumpy influence stew. requires a lot of time in a well-stocked kitchen.
In order to pull off this project, Lehman collaborated with the Orchestre National de Jazz, a big band funded by the French government. He also involved IRCAM (the Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Musics) to incorporate electronics that respond to the live musicians in real time. After years of composing and workshopping, Lehman and his long-time American collaborators, trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson and vibraphonist Chris Dingham, joined the orchestra for eight concerts, and then settled into the studio for four days at the beginning of 2023.
The time and resources have not gone to waste. This music feels not only sui generis — the only records it really sounds like are Lehman’s earlier octet recordings — but lived-in. The exchanges between dopplering horn sections and single soloists, and the meshing between orchestrated frequencies and precisely mutating rhythms, is spot-on.
But enough about how impressive it is; what is it? Essentially, it’s a transfer of Lehman’s spectral jazz concept, in which an understanding of frequency relationships yields access to alien sounds and an engagement with rhythm concepts spanning the ages of bebop and hip-hop makes the whole thing swing, to a post-Gil Evans orchestral environment. It has plenty of big brass punch, crips rhythms, and abrupt shifts in velocity and tone, all of which create fertile opportunities for adroit soloists to assert both structure-oriented and emotion-evoking responses. Ex Machina is everything it set out to be. And if you’re looking for a recording that’ll give you new things to hear every time you play it, it is without peers.

Mary Halvorson | Away With You
My quest to check out great women jazz musicians continues even after I’ve already done the special episode of my radio show, and one of the last albums I bought prior to that special was this one, which is one of the more recent (but not the most recent) albums by guitarist Mary Halvorson.  Halvorson’s style is definitely out; her music is usually either classified as avant-garde jazz or free jazz.  It’s not the most jarring or abrasive by far, though - if you can stomach the likes of Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy , or Vijay Iyer, you won’t have any issues with Mary Halvorson.  Her music is often built on fairly simple and melodic guitar lines with more and more layers added via the horn section, sometimes rising all the way into a free jazz cacophony.  Sometimes her lines remind me a little bit of the mathematical quality of Ned Goold’s original compositions.  
Halvorson’s band is a big one here - saxophonists Jon Irabagon and Ingrid Laubrock, trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson, trombonist Jacob Garchik, pedal steel guitarist Susan Alcorn, bassist John Hebert, and drummer Ches Smith, almost all of whom I’m familiar with to some degree from other people’s bands.  I’ve heard Irabagon with Brandon Lee and Hebert with Fred Hersch, and I know Ches Smith is in Tim Berne’s band Snakeoil.  Likewise, I know Smith and Jonathan Finlayson also work in avant-garde groups of their own as well.  This is, in other words, an all-star group of modern young innovators, and they’re performing an excellent set.  It’s not always exactly my sort of thing, but I liked it more than I often enjoy modern avant-garde jazz.

Hawkeye, the TV series featuring Marvel’s masked marksman, has found its directors. Or, at least, some of them.
Bert and Bertie, the nom de plume for Amber Finlayson (Bert) and Katie Ellwood (Bertie) and known for helming Amazon’s coming-of-age comedy, Troop Zero, have been tapped to captain a block of episodes of the Marvel Studios series that will air on Disney+.
Also pulling the string for a block will be Rhys Thomas, a Saturday Night Live helmer who has also directed Staten Island Summer, Amazon’s action comedy series Comrade Detective, and John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch.
Jeremy Renner, who played the role in the big-screen films, will be reprising Clint Barton, who first made his comic debut back in 1964’s Tales of Suspense #57. One of the arcs of the series is Barton’s mentoring of a new generation of archer, Kate Bishop. Hailee Steinfeld was previously in negotiations for the part but it is unclear if her deal has closed. Marvel had no comment.
Jonathan Igla (Mad Men, Pitch) is writing the series.
Hawkeye is part of the first wave of Marvel shows that was due to hit Disney+ starting in fall 2020. The first show was to have been The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but the series has been delayed to the coronavirus pandemic affecting production. Other shows include WandaVision (spring 2021, if things go as planned), Loki (also spring 2021), then Hawkeye. All will see the silver screen thespians toplining the series.
At D23 in 2019, Marvel chief Kevin Feige announced that shows featuring She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, and Moon Knight are also in the works.
The past credits of the director hired suggests that the show will have a light-hearted tone and that the directors could be following the path set by Joe and Anthony Russo, who helmed comedies before undertaking the massive Captain America and Avengers movies.
Bert and Bernie made their debut with 2016’s Dance Camp, then followed it up with Troop Zero, which made a splash at 2019’s Sundance Film Festival where Amazon snapped it up. Colorful and energetic tones have been a signature of their work, as has snappy relationships. The duo have also directed episodes of Hulu’s buzzy period show, The Great, starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult.
Bert and Bernie are repped by Verve. Thomas is repped by WME, 3 Arts Entertainment, and Ziffren Brittenham.

It’s a bit deceptive to state simply that Five Elements has been around for a few decades. While it’s true chronologically, the statement obscures the fact that 5E is constantly changing, the base workshop for altoist/composer Steve Coleman’s relentless conceptual and musical imagination. There are musical constants — intricacy, density, and tons of rhythmic momentum — and some longstanding personnel, too. But what makes Coleman’s music so vital is how he keeps turning over and reinventing his sound, even as his alto and compositional imprint are unmistakable.
For the group’s first live recording in 15 years, comprised of two sets at the Vanguard, Coleman is joined by trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson, guitarist Miles Okazaki, bassist Anthony Tidd and the outrageously good drummer Sean Rickman. It’s not just that Live at the Village Vanguard, Vol.1 (The Embedded Sets) contains over two and a half hours of music; listeners also get the opportunity to explore the group’s varied approaches to some of the same tunes from set to set. It’s something that we jazz nerds love to do, and there are riches here.
The first set pops up with the filthy mid-tempo funk of “Horda,” and just like that the group finds the sweet spot: a deeply organic groove that’s simultaneously the most ridiculously balanced complexity that you can’t quite count along with. This particular configuration of Five Elements has some serious chemistry built from many years of playing. That’s nowhere more evident than Coleman’s and Finlayson’s synergy, playing off each other or nailing the unisons. But it really is about the group sound in total. Things are always trailing off, overlapping someone else’s rhythm, shading bright or lurking just below. There is just so damn much going on in this music — so how does it sound so tight all the time?
One answer is that each player understands that they aren’t a typical soloist so much as a moving part in Coleman’s whole. Consider Okazaki (whose recent solo recording of the entire Thelonious Monk oeuvre is required listening, by the way). He’s got a real talent for finding nuggets of rhythm or melody at the heart of a large sound, turning them inside out and reinventing them. On “Djw,” for example, he locates a stuttering Jimmy Nolen figure that’s a bracing contrast to the Tidd-Rickman flow. Likewise, Okazaki bounces brilliantly through the circuitous, burbling post-bop funk of “twf.” Finlayson is just outrageously good, dialed in completely to what makes Coleman’s music work. On the whirligig “Figit Time” and on “Djw” he cranks out some simply bonkers improvising, growling lines, trading polyrhythms with Okazaki, playing so much trumpet that sometimes you feel as if you need to hold on for dear life.
And yet there’s a surprising amount of space for music so dense. Despite the complexity of the barnstorming “Change the Guard” or the tense, multi-tempo “rmT,” the structure isn’t a cage, but a framework for play. This is another benefit of the live versions: on many tunes, Coleman’s own a capella openings reveal how he hears the tempo and phrasing on deck. His alto sounds inquisitive to start “Little Girl I’ll Miss You/Embedded #1,” whose group performances takes the cues for some fairly chill counterpoint, tight harmony, and tasty brushwork. The slow, deliberate opening to “idHw” yields more spacious and free music than one often hears with this group. And the harmonic minor riffing that opens “Nfr” uncorks one of the finest neo-bop heads here.
The music resists closure or summation. But if one thing sums it up, it’s the sheer energy of it all. You know this from Coleman’s own vocalisms throughout, from his direction (“Open up! Open up!”) to his scatting duos with Tidd, to his end-of-set address to the audience (directing them to his website, he says “There’s lots of videos to teach people how to lose gigs”). Tight but loose, able to start and stop on a dime, this music is effervescent. Bring on Vol. 2!

Steve Coleman - Live at the Village Vanguard, Vol. 1 (The Embedded Sets)
Alto saxophonist Steve Coleman’s Live at the Village Vanguard, Vol. I (The Embedded Sets) is his first live release in over 15 years. It captures his band Five Elements in two joyous sets at the historic New York venue where some of the most famous jazz recording from the likes of John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, and Bill Evans have been made. Coleman’s personal history is tied deeply with the club: One of the main reasons he moved to New York City from Chicago was for the opportunity to play in the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, of which he was a member from 1978 to 1980. After playing there with singer Abbey Lincoln in 1984, there followed a hiatus of over 30 years before he was invited to perform at the club as a leader in 2015. Since then, he has led his band Five Elements at the Vanguard every year, including these two sets recorded in May, 2017. Unlike his two most recent releases, Morphogenesis (NPR Critics Poll #2 album of 2017) and Synovial Joints (New York Times #1 jazz album of 2015), both of which are highly orchestrated, Coleman’s recent goal has been to perform as spontaneously as possible, often completely extemporaneously, and yet still retain form and structure. Interspersing the set with tracks that feature these new compositional tactics with long-time Coleman favorites, the musicians tackles Coleman’s typically intricate music with an effortless grace. The band’s mastery over the cross-hatching rhythms, tricky counterpoint and percolating groove, inspired by the magical vibe of the Village Vanguard, is captured here at its absolute peak.
