Future Diary Radio TL

Here’s the (long time coming) update on the Future Diary Radio CDs! I’m sorry it took so long to finish this project, as always, school has me on a chokehold, but I’m glad to say the translations are finally done! In case you missed the original post, the Future Diary Radio CDs are an obscure piece of media from Future Diary that include commentary from some of the show’s voice actors, regarding their experiences voicing the characters and opinions about the series. You can now find the three tracks with the translated subtitles on my Youtube channel (daisynilla) or on the links down below. Special thanks to @iwanpepsu, @syrpai and @the-chosen-blood-teller for helping me gather the tracks from the radio CDs.

And on a semi-related note, I also wanted to use this post to comment on a couple of things that came up while doing research for this project.

1. In all of the three Radio CDs, the voice actors mention something about a live concert that happened at Shibuya AX on July 29th. I'm not sure how well-known this concert and the music featured in it are among the fandom, but given how much it is talked about in the radio CDs (and how much information I gathered on it incidentally), I figure I should make a separate post dedicated to that. Especially because of… this:

2. On one of the Radio CDs, there was a mention of the DVD cast commentaries done by the Japanese voice actors. I don't own the DVD, but I was accidentally sent the audio for these Japanese cast commentaries in response to my last post about the Radio CDs. For my sanity’s sake, I’m not translating this, (I feel like the radio CDs are a good enough stand-in for the cast commentaries) but given its mention, I wanted to provide some of the context surrounding it. Like your regular cast commentaries on any DVD’s bonus features, the voice actors share their comments of the show as they watch the episodes. The order of the voice actors featured in each episode goes as follows:

Episodes 1-2: feature commentary from Misuzu Togashi (Yukki’s VA) and Tomosa Murata (Yuno’s VA).

Episodes 3-5: Aizawa Mai (Minene’s VA, ps her voice is so high it caught me off guard), Kawahara Yoshihisa (12th’s VA) and Sendai Eri (Tsubaki’s VA).

Episodes 6-8: Sanada Asami (Reisuke’s VA) and Mizuhara Kaoru (Rea’s VA).

Episodes 9-11: Ishida Akira (Akise’s VA), Matsuoka Yuki (Hinata’s VA) and Hiramatsu Hirokazu (10th’s VA).

Episodes 12-14: Ishii Makoto (Nishijima’s VA) and Tanaka Masahiko (Kurusu’s VA).

Episodes 15-17: Seki Tomokazu (Marco’s VA) and Kuwatani Natsuko (Ai’s VA).

(Also, I'm pretty sure the English version of the DVD includes cast commentaries too, but I don't know if those are the Japanese cast commentaries with translated subtitles or if it's commentary from the American cast… probably the latter, but I guess I’ll have to look a little deeper into that.)

At the same time, in the city of Vedenga in Tianzhu, Zhang himself, the planner of the Bull Demon King's recovery experiment, and Princess Yumian, the lover of the Bull Demon King, issued an obliteration order to Red Boy to get rid of Sanzang and his party. Xuanzang Sanzang was an abandoned child floating in the river. He was brought up by Master Guangming Sanzang of Jinshan Temple, and because of this, he was discriminated against by the monks in the temple. The murder of his master dealt a huge blow to his mind, and thus he developed a withdrawn and rebellious character. Sanzang is arrogant and uninhibited, pursues freedom, and does not want to be bound by anything. He wants to find absolute strength and strength to protect his important things. The weapon he uses is the Ascension Spear, and his unique skill is "Lord of the Rings".

Sun Wukong, who always follows Sanzang closely, is a strange life form born from a stone 500 years ago. He uses a wishful stick that matches his agility as a weapon. His personality is extremely simple, his way of thinking is simple and direct, naughty and gluttonous, but when he removes the demon power control device on his forehead, he will completely lose his mind, full of desire to destroy and kill, and become an extremely dangerous person. The only person he is defenseless and deeply dependent on is Sanzang, because that is the "sunshine" that soothes his century-old loneliness.

Zhu Bajie is a master at using stomatal techniques, with a gentle and kind personality, easy and approachable. With a smile on his face all the time, he is thoughtful, considers issues meticulously and comprehensively, and can always see through other people's thoughts. But in fact, Bajie is also a human being same as Sanzang. Because his lover was destroyed by monsters, he crazily retaliated and turned himself into a monster. The crime and punishment that can never be eliminated is an irreparable wound in his heart, and under that gentle smile is the sadness that longs to be healed.

The red-haired Sha Wujing is the child of monsters and humans, so he is hated by his stepmother. His elder brother killed his own mother in order to protect him, which made him think that he was the real murderer and deeply blamed himself. From then on, Wujing realized the pure and unrestrained form of the waves, a lustful and outspoken prodigal, but he was still a bold man who loved to fight against injustice. The weapon he uses is a crescent shovel with a chain. Although he often bickers with Wukong, he is actually very considerate of his companions.

This group of characters with full of personality quoted the names of the characters in the Chinese classic "Journey to the West", but completely subverted the original image. Although the background of the story is set in ancient times, their language and behavior are no different from modern people. Make the film full of post-modern colors. The four people who are mixed with humans and demons each have their own inner wounds, and the delicate portrayal of their psychological processes brings the audience into a world that is sentimental and yet warm.

Since it popped up on the Podcast, how would you rank the sibling dynamics from healthy to trainwreck?

This is an innocent-sounding question until you go over the franchise and realize just how many sibling relationships there are in Digimon and that all but like three of them have elements that might raise eyebrows. In the interest of being comprehensive, this includes all named characters in any anime, manga, and game I’m familiar with, treating the reboot separately and including Survive because... (looks at Kaito and Miu’s bios) ...holy crap.

Sibling Relationship Rankings! (Healthy is Higher)

Joe & Shin Kido (Adventure): Shin understands Joe’s hang-ups and offers support to make his own choices without steering him in any specific direction, for or against the family. And Shuu exists too (depending on the language you’re watching in)

Juri & Masahiko Kato (Tamers): For all of the awkwardness and potential points of fracture in the family, Juri and Masahiko are very close. Fun Fact: She started carrying around her iconic hand puppet to amuse and entertain him!

Keito & Nozomi Tamada (Re:Arise): Even with very different personalities, Keito and Nozomi have a lot of respect for each other. Unlike some big brothers, he comes to a mature conclusion when he realizes she’ll be just fine with Pumpmon at her side.

Yamato Ishida & Takeru Takaishi (Adventure 2020): Yamato’s worry over Takeru only affects his reluctance to take on time-consuming side quests when he might be in danger. Far more chill about trusting Takeru with the rest of the team, he’s a motivation rather than a mental handicap.

Masaru & Chika Daimon (Savers): Perhaps a more controversial pick for the healthier side, but Masaru and Chika have a playful relationship that proves that Chika dishes out as much as anyone in the family. Given how much harm DATS and Digimon have done to the family, Masaru risks her love to keep them away from her.

Joe & Shin Kido (Adventure 2020): Shin’s still supportive and still encourages Joe to make choices for himself, but having that bugout bag ready to go raises some serious questions about that family and which side Shin’s really on.

Ai & Makoto (Tamers): Toddlers fight. It’s okay. They come together for Impmon’s sake and the fact that they’re the only duo in the franchise with mutual custody over a digivice has to say something about the strength of their relationship.

Nene & Kotone Amano (Xros Wars Manga): Nene’s tactics are still desperate but not quite as extreme as the anime, and it counts for so much that Kotone fights so hard for Nene once the tables are turned. And good lord that backstory...

Takuya & Shinya Kanbara (Frontier): There’s definitely a sense of Takuya lapsing into thinking Shinya encapsulates everything frustrating about having an older brother, but he gets over it.

Miyako Inoue + Three (Zero Two): Perfectly normal large household. And while wondering what it would be like to be an only child is something every youngest does... top of mind fantasy, Miyako? Really?

Jianliang & Shaochung Lee (Tamers): Speaking of four-packs... there’s no doubting how much they care about each other, but Jian’s occasional short fuse with Shaochung betrays his usual calm demeanor, and we never get a picture of the full family dynamic once Rinchei and Jaarin are included.

Daisuke & Jun Motomiya (Zero Two): Everyone likes to paint Jun and Daisuke as something uglier than it really is. As much as they annoy each other, it’s still a pretty conventional sibling dynamic and they’d still fight hard for the other... even if the feeling’s closer to obligation.

Koji Minamoto & Koichi Kimura (Frontier): There’s no questioning the bond they develop, but there’s no way Koji and Koichi go from “don’t know the other exists” to “ZOMG Twinzies!” without a ton of awkwardness and feeling each other out. They’ll get better, but from our standpoint this is where we start to drift into trainwreck territory.

Tomoki & Yutaka Himi (Frontier): Tomoki can spin it all he wants but Yutaka comes off as a real jerk. Not that some resentment isn’t a little justified given how much Tomoki is coddled, but taking it upon himself to be the bearer of tough love is still not cool.

Taichi & Hikari Yagami (Adventure 2020): Hikari has a blind faith that Taichi can save the day in any circumstance, up to and including international shipping crisis. Meanwhile Taichi sees Hikari lapsing between typical friendly eight year old to brainwashed robot and doesn’t find any problem with it.

Yamato Ishida & Takeru Takaishi (Adventure): Lessons in how not to be an overprotective big brother. Yamato freaks out at the slightest notion that Takeru might be exposed to danger, including his very presence in the Digital World. When you have a complete nervous breakdown realizing that little bro’s actually pretty capable on his own, it’s not about your relationship with him anymore.

Touma & Relena Norstein (Savers): There’s caring about a little sister, making her plight a central cause in your life, and then involving her in a chess match with a madman. There’s a lot to forgive here (they are raised in a family where your kneejerk reaction to Grandma is “I bet she supported the Nazis in World War II”), but everything about their relationship just makes you uncomfortable.

Kaito & Miu Shinonome (Survive): Maybe it’s not fair since their game is the franchise’s unicorn, but their bios have warning flags all over it. He’s overprotective, ready to fight at the slightest hardship, and she repays this attitude by being rebellious and weird and eager to pursue trouble. May end up being worse once the game actually comes out.

Rei & Hajime Katsura (Appmon): Another one where their backstory makes you sympathize with the lengths they go to in order to stay together, but risking the security of actual guardians to go it alone? Jesus. Even with their ride or die attitude, you still sense a bit of friction in their relationship, and so many of their hardships are their own doing.

Nene & Yuu Amano (Xros Wars): There’s nothing seemingly wrong on the surface between Nene and Yuu, but that’s why their actions are so extreme. Yuu’s more than happy to treat her as an enemy general in his game, while Nene’s aligning herself with dark forces and causing real trouble to get him back. It’s all very loud and intense for a relationship that, without external influences, is just nice and cordial.

Yuuko & Yuugo Kamishiro (Cyber Sleuth): You can be anything you want on the internet! So why not take the identify of your big brother who was stricken with a mystery illness at a young age and lead a legion of hackers? And if you’re Yuugo, use your digital body to take control of that avatar! Nothing weird about any of this!

Ken & Osamu Ichijouji (Zero Two): Like Tomoki, Ken can come up with whatever rationale for Osamu’s abuse he wants, and Osamu at least had some kind moments, but there’s no denying that this family was a mess. And of course Ken’s reaction to Osamu’s death... could have been better.

Taichi & Hikari Yagami (Adventure): Hikari’s introduction to the series was intended to be a little creepy, and that just sets the tone. Her blind loyalty to Taichi is a primary point of emphasis through three series, and Taichi sometimes goes ballistic worrying about her... when not accidentally endangering her life. And that’s before she unleashes a world-destroying abomination at the mere suggestion that Taichi’s dead, and why telling him “what you’re doing is wrong and I kind of hate you for it” is a big moment for her, even though she’s wrong.

Neo & Rei Saiba (V-Tamer): There’s going a little overboard to keep your family together or save a sibling’s life, and then there’s aligning yourself with evil forces to avoid having to deal with your sister’s manageable disability. Call it being jaded or delusional, but when it drives your sister to attempt suicide there are definitely issues you two need to work through.

Erika & Ryuji Mishima (Cyber Sleuth Hackers Memory): Because aligning oneself with Arkadimon is always a fantastic idea. He’s overprotective, she manipulates him because of it, there’s resentment, there’s anger, and basically the entire game is spent watching these two outdo each other in terms of causing wanton destruction throughout the city and cyberspace.

Honorable Mention: Bagramon & DarkKnightmon (Xros Wars): The battle of who can stab the other in the back last.

"Drifters" Ova Preview Promises Everything from Classic Heroes to Mummy Men

The anime adaptation of Kouta Hirano's historical figures versus fantasy Drifters will be returning in an episodes 13 and 14 Blu-ray, scheduled for December 23rd. The OVA will add banker/trader Bunzelmachine Shylock the 8th, voiced by Tomoaki Maeno (Log Horizon's Naotsugu, UtraPri's Camus, Yowapeda's Juichi Fukutomi). 　米国では電子タバコによる呼吸器疾患の患者が急増し、亡くなる人も2桁になっている。パンデミック（伝染性の大流行）という表現も使われ、大きな社会問題になっている。いったい何が起きているのだろうか。

■《電子タバコでどんな病気になるのか》　米国CDC（疾病予防管理センター）によれば、電子タバコによる健康被害は、 {{ 2019年10月3日の時点で48州と1つの米国領において1080の肺損傷症例と15の州で18人の死亡を報告 : https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/basic_information/e-cigarettes/severe-lung-disease.html#what-we-know }} している。患者の約70％が男性、約80％が35歳未満（18～20歳が約21％）だという。

　タバコを吸うと気管や肺などの呼吸器に吸い込んだ物質が触れ、あるいは身体中の細胞に入り込み、直接的に悪影響を及ぼす。その結果、肺がん、COPD（慢性閉塞性肺疾患）、気管支喘息、鼻腔や口腔などの頭頸部がん、といった病気になる（※1）。だが、最近の電子タバコによる呼吸器疾患の場合、少し病気の種類が異なるようだ。

　ニコチンが添加されたリキッドを使う電子タバコは、日本を除く各国で売られている。電子タバコで病気になった事例はいつ頃から現れてくるのだろうか。

　例えば、急性好酸球性肺炎（Acute Eosinophilic Pneumonia）という病気がある。日本から加熱式タバコ（アイコス＝IQOS）を吸ったことで急性好酸球性肺炎になったという症例報告があるが（※2）、電子タバコでもこの病気になる危険性はありそうだ。

　以前から、タバコを吸うと急性好酸球性肺炎という重篤な肺炎になることが知られていたが（※3）、この病気はわりに珍しく（※4）、他の肺炎と紛らわしいため、症例報告に上がりにくかった可能性もある。好酸球というのは白血球の一種でアレルギー反応を制御する。タバコに含まれる物質が劇症のアレルギー反応と好酸球の活性化を引き起こすのではないかと考えられている。

■《好酸球性肺炎よりもリポイド肺炎か》

　では、電子タバコを吸ったことによる急性好酸球性肺炎の症例報告はあるのだろうか。

　過去の文献を検索すると、2009年に出版された急性好酸球性肺炎の症例報告のレビュー（※5）には、紙巻きタバコによる論文は紹介されているが、まだ電子タバコについての言及はない。

　電子タバコを吸って急性好酸球性肺炎になったという症例報告は、2014年に男性で1例（※6）、2019年に女性で1例（※7）あるだけだ。最近の電子タバコ騒ぎで入院した患者17人の肺細胞の臨床検査によれば、好酸球はあまり見られなかったらしい（※8）。

　結論を出すのは早いが、おそらく今回の電子タバコの健康被害は急性好酸球性肺炎ではないのかもしれない。

　ところで、電子タバコを吸うことによる呼吸器疾患の問題がクローズアップされるのは2012年になってからだ。しかし、2012年前後の段階では電子タバコによる健康への害は不明で、リキッドに含まれるグリセロール、プロピレングリコール、ニコチン、添加された香料などを容疑者として探索が続けられていた（※9）。

　電子タバコによるグリセリンはリポイド肺炎（Lipoid Pneumonia）という、これも珍しい呼吸器疾��との関連が示唆され、例えば呼吸困難とひどい咳、発熱で入院した42歳の女性の事例では、約7ヶ月前から電子タバコを吸い始めてから症状がひどくなり始めたという（※10）。

　リポイド肺炎というのは外因性の場合、パラフィン（流動パラフィン≒ベビーオイル）などの油性物質を吸い込んだり誤嚥したりして起きる急性の肺炎だ（※11）。肺の内部にべっとりと油成分が貼り付いて呼吸機能を阻害する。幼児が誤飲することが多く、火を噴くパフォーマーがパラフィンを使って誤嚥し、リポイド肺炎になるという症例も報告されている（※12）。

　2016年に出された電子タバコを吸った症例報告のレビュー（※13）では、25人の患者に健康への悪影響があった。そのうち呼吸器系の症例報告が6例あり、内訳は外因性のリポイド肺炎2例、気管支炎、急性好酸球性肺炎、肺炎、過敏性肺炎がそれぞれ1例となっている。

　今年2019年7～8月に米国ノースカロライナ州の2つの病院で、電子タバコを吸ったと思われる呼吸困難の患者5人が治療を受けたが、5人とも急性の外因性リポイド肺炎との診断だった（※14）。だが、前述の肺細胞の生検のレポートでは、外因性のリポイド肺炎の特徴を示していないという指摘がなされていて混乱している。

■《複合的な作用かもしれない》

　こうした報告をざっと眺めた印象では、電子タバコに含まれるグリセロールやプロピレングリコールといった化学物質が気化して呼吸器に送り込まれ、肺の中に貼り付いてしまい、好酸球性肺炎やリポイド肺炎のような症状を引き起こしたのかもしれない。

　ただ、9月24日の米国46州の患者805人を調べたCDCの疫学週報（MMWP、罹患率と死亡率の週報）によれば、男性69％、13～72歳（中央値23歳）となっていて、さらに患者514人を調べてみるとTHC（Tetrahydrocannabinol、テトラヒドロカンナビノール）という大麻成分の入ったリキッド使用者が76.9％、ニコチン添加リキッド使用者が56.8％となっている（※15）。

　また、イリノイ州とウィスコンシン州の患者127人を調査したMMWPによれば、項目に回答した86人のうち75人（87％）がTHCリキッドを使用し、61人（71％）がニコチン添加リキッドを使用していた。また、THCリキッドを使用した人の89％が友人や家族、路上の違法売人などから入手していたこともわかったという（※16）。

　こうしたことから米国の電子タバコによる健康被害は、THCとグリセロールやプロピレングリコール、さらにニコチンといった複合的で複雑な作用で起きている危険性が考えられる。

　2019年10月4日、米国FDA（食品医薬品局）は、電子タバコのどの成分が影響しているのか現状では不明としつつ、 {{ THCを含んだ電子タバコを使用しないように警告 : https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/statement-consumer-warning-stop-using-thc-vaping-products-amid-ongoing-investigation-lung-illnesses }} し、自分でリキッドに変更を加えず、違法なルートからの購入を止めるよう指示している。THC成分の添加を米国政府（FDA）は禁止しているが、合法的に認可している州も多い。実質的には野放し状態といっていいだろう。

　また、 {{ カナダのケベック州でも電子タバコによる重篤な肺疾患の患者が出て : https://www.msss.gouv.qc.ca/ministere/salle-de-presse/communique-1927/ }} いる。米国での事例を含め、2019年9月28日に {{ カナダ保健省は電子タバコを吸うことの健康上のリスクについて警告 : https://www.healthycanadians.gc.ca/recall-alert-rappel-avis/hc-sc/2019/70919a-eng.php }} した。

　電子タバコのリキッドにTHCを添加することは、以前から健康への悪影響が指摘されてきた（※17）。米国内のタバコ産業は、同国内の大麻の合法化の流れを受け、THC成分を加えたタバコ製品を全米で発売しようとしている。

　日本ではニコチン添加リキッドを電子タバコで使用することは規制されているが、加熱式タバコはかなり広まっている。加熱式タバコからもニコチンはもちろんグリセロールやプロピレングリコールが吸収され、複合的な作用の起きる危険性は高い。

　前述したように実際、アイコスを吸うことによって、急性好酸球性肺炎という重篤な呼吸器疾患になった症例報告もある。日本でタバコ製品の安全性について行政機関の審査などは全くない。米国と同じ状態にならないという保証は何もないのだ。
