“Bangladesh has achieved a huge success in reducing infant and maternal mortality rates in the last five decades, securing the top position in South Asia.
According to the World Bank's estimation, the current infant mortality rate for Bangladesh is 21 deaths per 1000 live births making 85% decline from 1971 as the rate was 141 deaths during Bangladesh's independence.
According to health experts, Bangladesh achieved unprecedented success in every health index in the last 50 years since independence...
According to Health and Family Welfare Ministry, Bangladesh maternal mortality rate was 269 per 100,000 live births in 2009. The ratio has reduced to 165 recently.
The government has set a target to reduce maternal mortality to less than 50 per 100,000 live births...
After the independence, the Bangladesh government had put emphasis on maternal health, family planning, child nutrition and so on.
Special importance was also given on different five-year plans, health policy and latest health, population and nutrition programme. Special allocation was also kept at annual development programme (ADP) on those issues.
Annual Global Childhood Report 2019 of the humanitarian organization "Save The Children" says child mortality rate has reduced to a great extent in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal in the last two decades.
Among the four countries, Bangladesh has made the highest progress. The child mortality ratio declined 60% in Bhutan, 59% in Nepal, 57% in India, [and] 63% in Bangladesh in the last two decades...
Family Planning Directorate Assistant Director Matiur Rahman said that 3,364 union health and family welfare centres are providing maternal and child health facilities apart from family planning services across the county.
Of them, 2189 union health and family welfare centres are providing 24 hour safe delivery facilities every day.”

A newly published rule from the USDA, which is set to go into effect on Feb. 12, officially codifies several parts of the Access to Baby Formula Act of 2022.
The legislation, whose passage was led by Hayes in May of 2022 amid the national baby formula shortage, is designed to maintain continued formula access for families who participate in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, known as WIC.
“When the baby formula shortage began last year, many parents were left wondering how they would feed their children. For parents enrolled in WIC, there was an added pressure of having to purchase specific formula based on program requirements,” Hayes said in a press release announcing the codification.
According to Hayes’ office, formula purchased through WIC account for approximately 50% of all formula purchases in the country.
More than 6 million people in the U.S. participate in WIC, including 11,000 infants in Connecticut, according to estimates from USDA.
"I know first-hand how critical WIC is to families, but the shortage revealed how dangerous those limitations can be,” Hayes added. “My Access to Baby Formula Act and the new USDA rule, will help families in the face of crisis. This rule helps strengthen a program that has historically been associated with improved infant health outcomes and reduced infant mortality.”
Provisions in the Access to Baby Formula Act, “Waive requirements that can slow down the process to get formula back on the shelves, without sacrificing safety standards,” and “Strengthen coordination and information sharing between the Secretary of Agriculture and Secretary of Health and Human Services regarding any supply chain disruption, including supplemental food recalls,” according to Hayes’ office
It also grants waiver authority that allows states that contract through WIC to purchase supplies from non-contract manufacturers in response to “emergencies, disasters, and supply chain disruptions.”

Nurturing Convenience: Breast Milk Storage Products Market Report
The global breast milk storage products market size is expected to reach USD 834.06 million by 2030, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc., expanding at a CAGR of 8.28% from 2022 to 2030. The expansion of the market for breast milk storage products can be attributed to growing public knowledge of the advantages of breast milk. Various governments around the world urge moms to breastfeed their children until they are 6 months old. A number of industry participants, including Medela LLC, Laura & Co., and Ameda, and universities, such as Washington University and Fudan University, are educating women about breastfeeding and its advantages by organizing workshops and offering educational periodicals. This is, in turn, impelling the market growth.

Globally expanding milk banks are predicted to significantly increase the demand for breast milk storage products including bottles and bags. For instance, Germany has roughly 18 breastmilk banks that can aid premature children by giving them donor milk. In order to assist clinical institutions in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland with the establishment and management of human milk banks on a national scale, the European Foundation for Care of Newborn Infants (EFCNI) has also launched an international project. This is expected to increase the milk donation, thereby impelling the need for breast milk storage products.
Furthermore, it is anticipated that increasing awareness and a number of government measures to normalize the use of breast milk will benefit the market growth. For instance, a congresswoman introduced a bipartisan bill in August 2022 to safeguard parents who are traveling with breast milk. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is now required to clarify and regulate updates on handling breast milk and infant formula. This law will make it possible for parents to transport breast milk as well as other infant formula while feeling safe and at ease. This could result in driving the demand for breast milk bottles and bags.

“An unborn baby was treated through her umbilical cord for a rare genetic condition—the same disease that killed her two older siblings—and the pioneering procedure prevented the infant’s death.
It’s the first time in history Pompe disease has been treated in utero, and it could represent a life-saving new standard of care that’s safe and effective for both mother and infant.
In Canada, the parents of 16-month-old Ayla were relieved when she was born as expected, with no signs of the disease that can cause lethal heart complications. Pompe affects fewer than 1 in 100,000 infants, but this inherited condition arising from a defective gene copy is often fatal...
In March of 2021, Ayla’s mother entered an Ottawa maternal hospital and over the following weeks received 6 injections of an infant-Pompe drug called alglucosidase alfa into the umbilical vein, a delivery method that’s established for treating anemia in a fetus.
Ayla was born on schedule without any signs of the disease. She’s met normal developmental milestones and doesn’t show any loss of motor function. She still receives regular ERT. The results were compiled and published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
“Our results are consistent with in utero ERT attenuating or even halting the disease process in the fetal period,” the doctors wrote in their case report.” -via Good News Network, 11/29/22

Card et al. study the impacts of childbirth in a hospital with high cesarean delivery rates versus low. Cesarean rates vary across hospitals in the US from 19 to 48 percent. That's huge variation! They use a distance based IV strategy to classify mothers living near high C-section hospitals versus low.
There is some reverse causality worry here since giving birth by C-section is often due to complications during labor, but using this IV should account for that. They have a strong first stage with a higher rate of cesarean deliveries among mothers that live closer to high C-section hospitals. They also show that patients living closer to high C-section hospitals don't seem to be significantly different from those living near low C-section hospitals.
They find some interesting evidence. C-section births provide benefits in that infants are born healthier and are less likely to be readmitted. However, they are still susceptible to respiratory problems.
I think there is more room for research on the effects on the mothers. They note that their data are limited and the paper focuses on the infants.
