the way people don’t talk about him enough and ONLY mention him when talking about other characters. like fandom people PLEASE HE IS A CHARACTER OUTSIDE OF MAKAROV PLEASE PLEASE HE’S SO INTERESTING AND IF YOU JUST LOOK AT HIM YOU’LL UNDERSTAND

his entire backstory is so good. the original trilogy had like four pairs that all reflected each other and i’m so excited to ramble publicly about this instead of annoying my brother— like. okay. we all know that price-soap was THE duo of the OG games. but there’s also shepherd-allen, zakhaev-makarov, and makarov-yuri. HEAR ME OUT ON THIS.

price-soap is very much a mentor-mentee relationship. price basically took soap under his wing after the latter joined the SAS and helped him become the best of the best. this really reflects shepherd-allen and zakhaev-makarov, which are both darker adaptations of this duo. shepherd-allen involves someone “good” (allen) being manipulated and influenced by someone “bad” (shepherd) in order to achieve a goal. zakhaev-makarov is even darker, with someone “bad” (zakhaev) training someone (makarov) to become even worse, or, in their minds, the best of the best. it’s all in reverse.

makarov-yuri is a LITTLE bit different here, since the two are closer in age. they met sometime in 1994 or (more likely) 1995, when makarov was 24-25 and yuri was “young”, but old enough to be spetsnaz (likely ~22 years old). the two became friends because zakhaev liked yuri’s patriotism and loyalty to his country, so he and makarov welcomed him in with promises of “restoring russia’s glory” and all that bullshit that the ultranationalists preached y’know. still, makarov and yuri became close friends and yuri spent the next 16 or so years thinking he was doing right by his people and helping his country, ONLY TO FIND OUT WHEN MAKAROV NUKED 30,000 PEOPLE THAT OH?? WE’RE THE BAD GUYS???

most people think that yuri didn’t betray makarov until 2016, during the airport massacre/no russian. HOWEVER. soap’s journal (my beloved) mentions yuri a couple times, and one of those times soap says something along the lines of “nikolai vouches for him (yuri), says they go way back.”

nikolai was literally introduced as an ultranationalist informant. it’s completely possible, if not LIKELY, that the two met while nik was undercover, and that after the nuke (which happened after nik was compromised), yuri got into contact with him. yuri says in his flashback sequence that the nuke was when he realized “this wasn’t war, it was madness” and i’m just like… y’all really thought a man saying that was gonna be chill for the next five years? i’m convinced he was feeding nikolai information, and the reason why makarov didn’t confront him until the airport massacre was because makarov trusted him, so he didn’t discover the betrayal until then.

HE’S SO COMPLICATED OKAY HE THOUGHT HE WAS DOING SOMETHING RIGHT ONLY TO DISCOVER THAT HE WAS IN THE WRONG AND THAT HE HAD TO FIX THE MISTAKES HE MADE. like, when he’s introduced in MW3, nikolai straight up tells price that yuri’s the only person that hates makarov more than he does. most of that hatred is DEFINITELY yuri feeling betrayed by the person he was closest with, but i’m willing to bet part of that anger was his own self-hatred for what he had done. it’s easier to project it onto someone else, to find someone easy to blame for his own mistakes. he WAS manipulated and lied to. however, he was still responsible for his own actions. makarov never forced his hand, yuri made his choices.

i could say more. his tattoos give so much info. the fact that he even ended up in that situation says so much to me. but froggi. bestie. his personality. no one talks about it enough.

his personality is a little difficult to see because he’s silent most levels and only talks occasionally during cutscenes. BUT THAT’S WHY “DUST TO DUST” AND “BLOOD BROTHERS” ARE THE BEST LEVELS. he’s literally just— like. okay. he literally starts off dust to dust by making a fucking joke. he and price are getting shot at, about to kill their greatest enemy, and this dude cracks a joke. makarov’s men are yelling and shooting at them, and yuri looks at price and just goes, “i think they know we’re here! :)” like YEAH. THEY SURE DO. KISS ME RIGHT NOW.

but also just. he’s a mixture of methodical planning and research – he memorizes info, he pays attention to people and their patterns. he was makarov’s right hand man, the second-in-command of the inner circle, one of the loyalist commanders (and probs the most involved of the three). his literal job after joining the ultranationalists was to escort and guard makarov. he was constantly working against overt AND covert enemies, he didn’t survive that job for 20 years by NOT knowing how to read people.

i said he’s a mixture because he’s also reckless as hell. not anymore so than someone like soap, but in “dust to dust”, price has to reel him in. after the elevator sequence, yuri just. picks up a frag grenade, throws it, and sprints right after it?? also vaults over a couch so that was hot as fuck, but price literally has to go, “yuri your armor’s gone, BE FUCKING CAREFUL” because he’s just rushing in. he wanted blood and i’m just… 🫣. usually he’s patient and takes the time to do things smart. but he’s also perfectly willing to use dangerous tactics and risky maneuvers to get the job done. he keeps his composure alarmingly well, but there are things that can make him lose it because he’s still human. like in blood brothers? after he and soap fall from the tower and are laying on the street?? yuri’s barely awake, barely ALIVE, and he’s desperately reaching out to soap, one of his ONLY true allies, trying to save him. i’m so confident in that moment being horrible for yuri. one of his only friends and allies was killed by his former friend, and even though yuri’s presence wasn’t the reason for the bomb being planted, i can guarantee that he blamed himself for soap dying.

i’m just. AUGSSKDLWJWHFKDBWBDLFOWJ. i’m sliding down the wall ripping my hair out screaming crying rattling my cage bars losing my mind. i love yuri so much. he’s so interesting and the fact that people only talk about him when talking about makarov makes me so sad. like yes the two are very important to each other’s stories but C’MON. yuri may have a buzzcut and blue eyes but he’s also my gorgeous babygirl that can SPRINT while carrying a 6’2” man on his shoulders in a sandstorm 🤭

he’s also legitimately the reason why my brother thought COD had super soldiers. the amount of shit yuri survived and the sheer amount of stuff it took to kill him is insane. it took a consecutive TWO direct-impact rockets, being set on fire, impaled on metal, AND three bullets to the chest and head to finally kill him??? he deadass survived being shot point-blank, another rocket that led to him falling down a cliff into a raging river five days after being shot, falling out of a clocktower (like TEN stories??) and slamming into scaffolding before landing on a stone road, price punching him down a flight of stairs like 30 minutes after, ANOTHER DIRECT-HIT ROCKET—

it’s wild. he’s my indestructible beloved military wife. my main oc is a medic because this man needs someone to treat his wounds around the clock. i love him so much it’s not even funny. if he’s not in the reboot i’m marching down to IW and activision and starting a riot. if he does appear then i’m gonna write fics faster than the speed of light. i’ve already got plans for a makarov/reader/yuri fic that’s gonna be pure filth because i’m a simp.

Fun fact to start with: lucifer is scared of ghosts but not real ghosts, just the way fictional ghosts are presented. Yes that’s a deranged way of acting. Lucifer sees real ghosts who are covered in gore and viscera and having mental health episodes but also goes “shit is that a fucking ghost??” when he hears things fall over.

When Niki first sees lucifer, he sees him while he’s interacting with Zephyrus, meaning that lucifer is not willing to break his “non-threatening and kind of dumb in a silly way” act. So lucifer just plays dumb, and pretends he cannot see a ghost there. In addition to this, ghosts can see each other’s real appearances, so Niki sees what looks like the corpse of Ares Usotsuki (but different??) getting blood literally everywhere, and lucifer sees a guy who looks like he got blown up with a bomb and has chunks of viscera surrounding him. This isn’t how anyone else would see either of them.

Later on, Niki meets another undead character who directs him towards lucifer as the one who can give ghosts the abilities to appear more clearly or show them how to interact with things. And Niki does not believe this one bit, especially not understanding why ghosts would be scared of the guy.

While Niki lost his skill after death, lucifer didn’t lose his, he can still create illusions, and due to never having had a physical form fully, he’s more accustomed to the way he needs to interact with things. So not only can lucifer appear to people, he can also choose exactly how and in what fashions he wants to. The sand he controls gives him a semi-permanent body as well, so despite being a ghost, he’s even stronger than most living people, making him the most powerful ghost character by a very long way.

So Niki goes into talking to lucifer with incredibly low expectations and he is Proved Fucking Wrong. unfortunately. this is athanasios nikitas we’re talking about. he does not like being proved wrong nor being wrong at all. He doesn’t ask for help. He refuses to, says he didn’t need it actually, and just wanted to test if lucifer was actually who people said he was. And he does not for a second show how terrified he was. Because not only could lucifer control basically how long Niki is trapped in hell (hell? For him at least), but he’s also got the mind of if Ares Usotsuki was never told to Fucking Stop Messing Around With Dangerous Things, and the mental illnesses to prove it.

But Lucifer also very vaguely remembers Niki existing, because he has his own memories of his own life, so there’s this unspoken assumption that they both know the other person when really neither of them has a clue.

Niki avoids him after that.

Ahhhhh!!! I'm happy you got to go but also I'm SO JEALOUS!! That must had been so much fun. Same, I'm not into Fear Inoculum as much, but glad to hear that it didn't diminish the experience at all. Maynard is an absolute beast on stage. Hope he did his customary mix of energetic but very experimental writhing. I see they're destined to come to London next summer. Depending on the price, I maaaay finally be able to fulfil a long-held dream to see them live.

I have a huge backlog of asks and posts I haven't reblogged yet, and id like to apologise to those ppl waiting for me to respond and such but,,,,,,,,I'm not really in the best place rn!!! ive been posting via my queue (which is once or twice a day) and its because we’ve been hit with another devastating storm that really hit much much harder than last time. I actually lost electricity and water for a bit!! I still dont have water now, and have been using leftover pool water to try and get by and honestly we cant even cook food without water but gshdgghJGH ANYWAY!!! its left my country in a devastating state, and a lot of other problems surrounding my said shitty country is really affecting me and overwhelming me to a point that I can't function !!! online classes are kind of suspended until only today (coz of the storm) and I dont think I can even focus on that either, everything is really super overwhelming. quarantine still hits hard even at this point, and I also want to admit openly that its absolutely driving me insane. no, not because I wanna go out, but because of my family. I won't explain, but basically im near them 24/7 thanks to quarantine and have to walk on eggshells everyday aughhHHHHHHHH

also I love that at the beginning of the issue we see whirl with the missile launcher thing, and that’s what cd uses at the end here....good bookends. jro is really great about putting stuff in the story that just seems like innocuous filler/fun character building but turns out to ALSO be plot relevant later

HOLY SHIT I forgot about the cast page with the big red X’s thru the dead people’s profiles....jesus christ

AUGH this issue was a rollercoaster, phew...and the emotionally devastating conclusion to this arc is still yet to come!

I will say that it’s super interesting looking back on this, in the sense that rewind & chromedome are introduced as the first ever gay tf couple, and a few issues after we get told this explicitly, rewind is killed. this doesn't really end up being an issue representation-wise bc literally everyone is gay and there are a bunch of other significant gay characters/relationships later on, AND rewind comes back later

but still! it’s interesting to think about how, at the time this came out, the phrase/concept ‘bury your gays’ wasn't really something that was talked about a lot (or like, it was, but not as often as nowadays, and not really under the term ‘bury your gays’ iirc), but at the time of publication this would have fallen under that trope (though rewind coming back later negates it imo). I think it would've been tough for this story to come out nowadays due to the backlash that would've occurred from rewind’s initial death (it also makes me wonder if there was any backlash when this DID come out)

to be clear, this isn't a writing criticism - in fact, the reason this is able to work at all is because of the crazy amount of representation mtmte has. it’s like, youre able to kill off gay characters without it being ‘bury your gays’ if literally all your characters are gay by default, and there are a bunch of significant gay relationships happening - technically speaking, any death in mtmte is bury your gays lmao

this is a completely disjointed rant but my point is like, if this issue came out in 2020 people would probably be pretty put off by rewind dying (understandably), but in the context of the series as a whole I don't consider this to be bad writing/bad representation/bury your gays

and like, WERE people really mad about this in 2013? I am curious now, bc I would definitely feel kinda betrayed if I didn't know all the stuff that happens later

but its pretty nice, because now I'm free to enjoy the writing and be emotionally devastated by rewinds death in a normal way, and not a ‘I'm angry at the writers for killing off one of the only gay characters’ kinda way

anyways I'm tired as hell so I'm going to bed, ill continue the emotional devastation later, phew

‘‘tis without a question that I am focused. Casting spells take time, even if I am filled with Mana. I have nothing practical to do in the meantime.’

Five minutes’ time to escape… you mean you need five minutes to cast this spell. Knowing the truth just spoils it for me. And why aren’t you using any poison anyway, Mr. Poison Dragon?

‘Oh, be quiet. ‘tis the same reason I had mentioned before. If I were to use my poison, no one will survive.’ “Now, my ultimate weapon, slay the dragon who corrupted the dragonslayers!” “Sir Elfé! He is mighty and righteous! Do not waver, men!”

Controlling the hydra from within, Virage repeated spewed noxious gas onto Veno. However, Veno’s Yggdrasil completely countered it. Virage’s followers attempted to do the same to the surrounding dragonslayers and townsfolk but were ineffective due to the same reasons.

“Damn you, you evil, deceiving dragon!” “You deserve nothing but death for your sins! Hurry, Sir Elfé!” “What makes you think you can tell me what to do?! And I know that much! The dragon cannot maintain this barrier forever!”

Virage and his goons struggled and struggled. But, I know. I know that their efforts against Veno’s Yggdrasil amounted to nothing.

“This is a miracle… o Sacred Yggdrasil… we have not misplaced our faith in you.”

Celes and her comrades continued to pray to Veno. Absorbing their prayers, the already stable Yggdrasil became stronger and more resistant. Five minutes have already passed during this exchange… and the magic was ready.

“Now… I have given you five minutes’ time. Virage, receive thy punishment for thy sins! I cast the almighty spell of destruction and the divine punishment upon Sodom and Gomorrah, Fire and Brimstone!”

As soon as Veno casted his spell, the skies swirled with grey clouds. A pillar of light penetrated through, striking straight down along with the crackling and rumbling of thunder and lightning.

“This magic is nothing compared to my—”

Virage commanded the Bio Corpse Hydra to defend itself, but Veno’s spell destroyed its defenses and pierced through the monster in an instant.

“Aughhhhhhhhhh!” “Wh—” “No w—” “Im—“

Virage and his assailants didn’t have enough time to cry out. By the powers of Yggdrasil, Celes and the other dragonslayers were once again protected from the great fire that raged from the lightning strike. Within ten seconds, the monster and men had been reduced to nothing but ashes. “Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah…”

The elf’s voice trailed until the fire fully consumed him. What was left was but a crater in the ground.

“Whew.”

Perhaps Veno was feeling generous after casting his spell. He used more Mana to fill in the crater and repaired the nearby buildings which had been destroyed by Bio Corpse Hydra.

“Ahh… that felt great. ‘tis very satisfying to finally unleash my powers.”

I could almost imagine Veno lighting up a cigarette after all that. It seems to me as if you’ve overdone it a little though, don’tcha think?

‘I am sure things shall be fine. I have restored the town to status quo ante bellum.’

I mean, I guess… Now then, it was time to clean up this mess. Surely, Veno could undo the magic casted on me, right? I now totally understood how it feels to be a spectator and I had had enough. Whatever it takes for you to return me to my world though.

‘Aye… then I shall… gah. It… seems that I am all out of Mana.’

You what?!

‘Perhaps we will need to… aaaaaaahhh’

Kersplash! Veno disappeared into a beam of light and I was switched back to the physical world. Then, I gently floated to the ground. Maybe it was because I was holding onto Karma Blaze. Luckily, I somehow landed safely.

“Yukihisa!” “Muuuuuuuuuuuuuu!”

Arleaf and Muu rushed over to my side.

“You did it! You too, Lord Holy Dragon!” “Muuuuu!” The world tree Veno spawned with his magic faded into the light as well.

‘Aye… however, the Mana I had been receiving from Karma Blaze stopped flowing.’ “Will Yukihisa turn into the Lord Holy Dragon again?” “Umm, y’know, me and Veno are totally separate beings, right, Arleaf?”

You don’t seriously think I’m the human form of Veno… right? We’ve already talked about this before, so she should understand.

“Oh… sorry. I didn’t mean it like that. I was wondering that because the Lord Holy Dragon had spoken how he couldn’t undo Forced Possession Summoning.” ‘Aye. But…’

Veno shifted his attention to Celes who had walked up to us.

“Cohgray, you really were the dragon…” “Like I said, it’s complicated, but I’m not actually the dragon, right?” “But if you had seen it… no, you are correct.” “Do you still want to duel? Though we found out how we’ve been had already…”

Celes silently shook her head. The rest of the dragonslayers followed suit as well. Wait… when did all of the people in Lif’el gather around us? This… is bad? I mean, we really did cause quite a stir.

‘Shall we escape? Though, thou art surrounded…’

I sat down and looked around…

“You need not be on guard, Cohgray. People have not assembled because they hold resentment towards you. Rather… yes, let me offer a prayer first then let me apologize afterwards.”

As the leader of the Dragonslayer Corps, Celes led her team and about half of the townsfolk in a prayer.

“Wh-What the…” “Umm…” “Y’all have made a real ruckus here.”

Wayne and Rurika showed up to the plaza.

“Uhh… what’s happening here?” “Well, this because you turned into the Holy Dragon, created a world tree, and saved the town, I s’pose.” ‘Hmm? What is the meaning of this?’ “And so what does this mean?”

Veno and I couldn’t quite make heads and tails of this situation, but Arleaf lightly cleared her throat and stood up along with Celes.

“Many of these people have found our lord, the Holy Dragon. He had appeared and brought salvation with him, saving the town from the brink of extinction. It is very much like a god had descended from the heavens.” “The others are us followers of the Teachings of the Sacred Yggdrasil. Our scriptures tell of a miraculous spell called Yggdrasil that will clear miasma, save the fallen, and protect the people. It is said that the one who casts the spell should be worshipped as a saint as well.”

Rurika raised her index finger and quickly added to the conversation.

“And then, the third religion in town is the Church of Saint Oevarl, a harmony of the other two. The name is a reference to a certain dragon, it seems.”

Saint Oevarl… your name is Veno Yveval, right?

‘Aye… but sayeth thou it to be similar?’

Well, yeah, it’s kinda similar. It’s not identical, of course, but if it’s a mixture between the two religions… well, it wouldn’t exactly be unreasonable.

“To sum it up, the magic used and the divine punishment we witnessed today is something of legends… even if it was casted by a dragon. I am sure the people who have observed today’s battle believe that it was the return of the saint.”

Ah… so in other words, Veno’s magic and the miracle of Karma Blaze roused up a few religions.

“Let us relay news to our countrymen, telling them that the culprit behind our afflicted family members was Elfé—or rather, it was the ancient elf by the name of Virage!” “Yeah!”

The dragonslayers all cheered while they were in the middle of praying to us.

“Then, the whole killing me thing…” “What do you take us for?! If we were to slay the dragon after it had called forth the world tree… we should be the ones punished.” ‘This proves that I had made the right decision in casting my spells, does it not?’

Sure, it does, Veno. Whatever makes you happy. But you and I both know that you only casted those spells ‘cause you were aching to try them out.

“Yeah… well, I’m glad that we’re good. Actually, Celes, we should probably hurry to save your sister. There might be more of Virage’s people coming after us.” “And even now, you still worry about me… you truly are a man of good character, Cohgray.”

Oops. Celes looked a little shocked.

“It’s the second coming!” “Lord Holy Dragon!” “The legends have come true!”

Everybody seemed to be overjoyed with how things turned out. They gather around me and tossed me in the air.

“Whoa! Hey, hold on!” “Eek!”

This is crazy!

“Please, hold on!” “Muu?!” “You two are with the Lord Holy Dragon as well, right? Up you go then!”

With that, people from all religions reveled together with the whole town for today’s monumental victory. There was a ceremony in the middle of all that celebration… at least it gave me a moment to speak to Celes and the rest of them. Well, the people of the Sacred Teachings have already sealed off the curse-ridden prayer altar yesterday and are now taking care of it. Veno told me he’d look further into the issue later. Oh, and it seems like Wayne’s issue was most likely related to the infectious altar too. A few days before symptoms started hitting him, his acquaintance showed up to his home with a Teachings symbol in hand.
