It was all Nancy Wheeler's fault.
I mean, literally. Quite from the beginning. Because it was all about Nancy Wheeler, wasn't it? It was all because of Nancy Wheeler, it was all for Nancy Wheeler.
Okay, let’s start from the top.
Jonathan has always kind of been there. He didn't say much, he didn't present himself much, he didn't get quite noticed. But he has always been there. And you had a thing for those who weren't actually seen, but that had always been there anyway.
Your interest was purely out of curiosity, though, of course. Because you wanted to understand the whole thing. Sure, you had the bigger picture — abusive, absent father, overprotective mom, young brother, and the whole heavy weight of teen parentalization on top of Johnny-boy's scrawny shoulders.
Multiply that for, like, a billion, and we get what we got after November 6th: missing young brother, over-overprotective mom, asshole opportunistic father, and the whole heavy weight of guilt on top of Johnny-boy's scrawny shoulders.
And, in the middle of all that, enters Nancy Wheeler.
Okay, wait, from the top again.
It was mid-May, and Jonathan was just there, as usual. Revealing some photos, the bigger and the smaller pictures you were so deeply curious to see. A precisely requested assignment for a History project — you really loved History, you'd put all your effort into it — and, oh wow! You were also there!
Both of you revealing your pictures, Johnathan had used that shiny new camera he showed up with after Christmas break — after Nancy Wheeler's boyfriend, Steve Harrington, broke the previous one (I mean, if the rumors were true, Johnny-boy was being kind of a creep. But apparently he apologized or whatever, because after Steve's purple eye and Will Byers' death and resuscitation thing, you've seen Johnathan, Steve, and Nancy Wheeler having lunch all together. As crazy as it all sounded).
That’s a digression, back from the top again.
You and Jonathan were sharing the silence only a red room and its buzzing little red lamp lights could provide, minding your own business. Well, he was minding his own business, you were kind of curious about the bigger and the smaller pictures. Minding his business as well.
Shoulder to shoulder as you worked on your photos, you hanging your own as Jonathan took his down from where they've been drying.
It was literally a bigger and a smaller picture, okay, I kid you not.
Jonathan seemed to get lost in his thoughts as he analyzed the bigger one, the one you've seen already — what seemed to be a reunion of sorts between the Byers and the Wheelers, parents and children, and those other two little gremlins that Will and Mike (was it Mike? Nancy’s younger brother, Will’s best friend) were inseparable friends with.
The younger ones were sitting on the floor, those huge smiles on their baby faces, happiness exhaling from, well, probably finding out that their friend that had gone missing for a week wasn't actually dead.
The parents, Joyce Byers, and Karen and What's-His-Face Wheeler were sitting on the couch behind the kids, pride and joy in the mothers' faces and boredom on the father's face — it was his permanent state, you were aware of it by now from seeing him from time to time on the streets.
Pretty, preppy, prissy Nancy was standing behind the couch, just behind her daddy, younger baby sister in her arms as she smiled that tiny little pouty smile of hers. No pretty, preppy, poshy Steve in sight, you wondered where he was, as Jonathan was standing beside Nancy and the baby, hands in his pants pockets, that perpetual blank stare in his eyes of someone being constantly haunted.
You found it cute, somehow.
Cute in, like, a curious kind of way. Wanted to find out what was haunting him so badly.
And then. In the present, real, out-of-picture time or whatever, Jonathan snapped out of his thoughts as he went to get the other picture — the smaller one — from where it was hanging. His hand stopped a single inch before touching it, and you saw from the corner of your eye that he was looking at you from the corner of his eye. Combine the peripheral vision situation with his hesitancy to grab the smaller picture, your life-long curiosity and an impulsive strike, and before you even thought about what you were doing, you were suddenly grabbing the fucking picture before Jonathan could.
You grabbed it, and he let out what sounded like a gasp and a whimper at the same time, and you walked backward until your back met the wall behind you. And Jonathan was all over you in a second, trying to grab your arms as you put them behind your back, hiding the picture — you didn't even get to see it, had no idea what he was so mortified about. He was saying, or screaming maybe, something at you that you couldn’t distinguish because his head was too close to yours. Distress all over his cute scrawny face, and you barely had the time to register the guilt bubbling in your stomach — because, fuck, why did you do that? It was a personal thing, you weren't even friends, you had talked to him like five times tops if you didn't count the whole trimester where you were basically best friends because of that Science project in freshman year.
You missed freshman year.
Anyway, there was no time to think about freshman year.
Over from the top, for real this time!
In the middle of all that, enters Nancy Wheeler.
Literally, physically enters the red room while you and Jonathan are pressed together against the wall, your arms behind your back, his arms on your arms and waist or maybe hips — you were unfocused, to be honest, by the fact that he was basically manhandling you with all his scrawny kid strength.
Well, Jonathan did win a fight over Steve Harrington, handed the School King's ass to him on a golden plate, so you shouldn't be that much surprised.
Alas, Nancy stopped at the door, her huge doe eyes getting even huger, sharp jaw going slack, long pointy fingers wrapped so tightly around the door handle that her knuckles were white.
"Oh! I- Jesus, I'm sorry! Jonathan, I-" Jonathan hadn't said a word since she entered, his whole body had gone frozen, and you were afraid he had stopped breathing altogether. "I'll come back later? I- Or, you'll come find me? I- Oh, god, I'm sorry!"
She ran off after her eloquent speech, not waiting for an answer and slamming the door behind her. Jonathan walked away from you and started murmuring something under his breath while walking in circles within the tiny space in the red room, forgetting about you and your stupid kidnapping of his picture, and finding out a new something to stress about.
You brought your arm to your front, finally looking at it and seeing what he really didn’t want you to see in the picture.
Guess who?
Nancy Fucking Wheeler.
It was on the same day as the other photo if Nancy’s clothes were to say, and she was away from the camera, her profile showing. Holding a single flower — you had no idea which one, you didn’t understand much about flowers. You knew it wasn’t a rose — in between her thin fingers, nose close to the petals, a delicate smile on her lips. She was in front of a window, the light from the outside encompassing her in a kind of godly aura, specks of dust around her, and yet she was the main focus of the whole frame.
As far as a picture could talk, this one was screaming ‘love’ so loudly it was deafening.
Something stirred in your belly, something raw and annoying and mean, but you ignored it and approached Jonathan carefully — as he was still kind of shaking, palms pressed tightly against his eyes.
“I’m sorry,” you whispered, already stretching your arm to give him back his Nancy Wheeler love portrait. “Curiosity killed the cat and whatnot,” you muttered as he looked at you with anger and snatched the photo from your fingers.
“Yeah, and it’s gonna get you killed too.” His voice was restrained, his whole strength going into not yelling at you again even if his words were threatening enough. “You should go,” he commanded before remembering that his pictures were ready and yours weren’t. “I should go.”
He gathered his photos, his tools and his backpack, and you couldn’t will yourself to tear your eyes from every single movement he made, even if it was painful to watch because he was so clearly pissed at you — and rightfully so.
“If it’s any worth, she looked jealous,” you said, right before he left the red room.
Jonathan paused, door half open, his hand gripping the handle so tightly his knuckles were going white — a perfect mirror image of what Nancy looked like just a few minutes before. He didn’t turn to look at you or to answer your remark, just huffed, shook his head, and left, slamming the door behind him.
You rubbed your face, felt like tearing your hair off your head, took a few long, deep breaths before resuming your task of revealing the photos for your History Project. Buried every single feeling into your head and heart, they weren’t worthy to feel or talk about, and you had more pressing urges.
The History Project. Something about your local community, how a small town revolved around its few citizens, and you thanked every god you could come up with that Jonathan left before you revealed your last picture. Or, that you distracted Jonathan enough by prodding onto his secrets before the revealing liquid did its job and revealed the secrets you were hiding yourself.
You took the picture from the container with the revealing liquid and hung it alongside the other ones you had already put up to dry. You looked at your secret smaller picture.
Out of frame, you knew that Joyce Byers was at the cashier counter of Melvald’s, handing little Will some random candy as he looked excited at the gift. In the frame, in the picture, focused on, behind Will, was Jonathan. Also on his profile, almost the same angle as his own picture of Nancy. He was smiling softly at the sight of his family once again reunited in such an uneventful task such as grocery shopping. The natural daylight from outside the store made his skin glow, and the little crisp texture and reflexes of the not-so-clean window between you and him made the picture look somehow cozy — the opposite effect of distancing that you’d think it would give it. He was at the very center of the frame, soft brown jacket over his shoulders, hands holding plastic bags as he waited for his brother, his pink cheeks making your own face heat up — you remembered. You were infatuated with how relaxed he looked, some of that whole heavy weight finally off his scrawny shoulders; so relaxed that he didn’t even notice you from across the street, taking the picture like a fucking weirdo stalker.
And as far as a picture could talk, this one was screaming ‘love’ so loudly it was deafening.
Thankfully, your own ears were the only ones at range. And accustomed to the noise already.

“I fucked up.”
Those were the first words you heard from Jonathan after the whole Nancy Wheeler love portrait fiasco in the red room. It was Friday already, and three whole days had passed - not that you were waiting for him to come talk to you sooner, because you never even talked before that, but something about the way you’d cross eyes in the hallways of the school made the air between you two weighted with something other than your crippling guilt.
“Come again?” you asked, setting down the Bukowski book you were pretending to read for your English class - ugh, Bukowski annoyed you.
Jonathan, for some reason, seemed annoyed at you.
‘Some reason’, okay, other than the obvious reason.
“I avoided Nancy after that day for as long as I could, but then she cornered me earlier today and I got too nervous and might have made the whole situation worst than it already was,” he answered, looking around him as if someone in the school parking lot was about to come out from behind a car and punch him in the face.
Hm, maybe Steve Harrington would.
“How did you manage that?” you asked again, crossing a leg under the other where you were sitting on the bench.
“I might have told her we, you and me, I mean, are… in a relationship.”
There was a ringing in your ear that kind of popped before the world went abruptly silent. You could see Jonathan in front of you, staring at you, waiting for your answer, but he was kind of blurry and the people walking behind him seemed to move in slow motion all of a sudden. It felt like years before you gathered just enough brain power to answer him.
“You. What.”
He groaned, and that made the world go back to normal inside your head, before he rubbed his eyes with the tip of his fingers.
“She came at me, asked who you were and if everything was okay that day, and all I could think of was you saying she had been jealous and, I don’t know, it felt like I blacked out or was possessed or something and then, out of nowhere, I was saying we were dating.”
“To make her more jealous?” you confirmed, and he shrugged violently.
“I guess!” he almost yelled, and then curled over himself in embarrassment. He hid his whole face behind the palms of his hands and you wanted to push them away, hold his cheeks yourself and-
Nope, block that thought out.
“Okay,” you said instead.
“Okay? ‘Okay’, what? Jesus, are you even more insane than I thought?”
You shrugged and pretended his words didn’t sting. “I’m saying we should go for it.” You saw his mouth opening, and spoke before whatever words were going to come out of him could hurt you further: “I can be your fake lover, you make Nancy jealous, she finds out she wants you and not Steve, dumps his ass and you and her will live happily ever after.”
Why were your impulsive thoughts making you so willingly throw yourself into a scenery that was only going to hurt you badly? You had no answer for that.
Jonathan frowned and actually seemed to consider, which was probably worse because you were pretty sure he was going to immediately deny your offer. It was a crazy fucking offer after all, who did you think you were? Molly Ringwald in a rom-com?
Well, apparently Jonathan thought he was Anthony Michael Hall, because the next thing he said was: “Yeah, let’s do that.”
“Dude. You’re kidding me?” you asked, twisting your entire body to fully face him and he seemed confused. “I was being sarcastic!” You weren’t, not really, but he didn’t know that. “We can’t do that, it won’t work! Just grow out some balls and ask her out, or whatever.”
You got up and started gathering your stuff since your free period was coming to an end, but Jonathan held your wrist before you could leave, a wave of shock starting where your skins connected all the way up to your brain. You ignored it.
“I already embarrassed myself too much in front of her. Please?” he begged, those sweet eyes of his staring deeply into your soul, and you huffed.
Closed your eyes so you wouldn’t see him, pulled your arm away so he wouldn’t touch you. He had too much power over you — and he had no idea.
“You owe me one, boyfriend,” you said just in time for the bell to ring, and then you were on your way to your English class, Bukowski ignored and forgotten, Jonathan’s pleading eyes the only thing on your mind.
“So, boyfriend, how did our love story begin?” Your question startled Jonathan, who hadn’t seen your approach.
He was sitting on the bench furthest from the entry of the park, looking at every direction around him just as he was in the school parking lot earlier that day. Still scared Steve Harrington would pop out of nowhere to beat his ass in revenge a few weeks late.
Jonathan had the luck of not sharing a single class with you over the rest of the school day, so he slipped a little note into your locker at some point, like a middle schooler trying to flirt. His note, however, did not read “WANNA GO GET MILKSHAKES WITH ME? [ ] YES [ ] NO - MARK WITH AN X”, but a simple “meet me @ train station park after school, gotta plan this right” instead.
Underwhelming.
You, however, were a pro at nothing else except committing to a bit, and it had been your stupid idea after all. So you went to the damn train station park to meet him and plan your damn love story, just so the two of you could make damned Nancy Wheeler jealous.
Jonathan was jumpy and kept as much distance in between you on the bench as he could, as if he was afraid you were going to attack him and devour his flesh like a monster coming from a sci-fi horror. You buried all your thoughts and feelings for him in the deepest of corners inside your mind (you’ve been doing that a lot, lately) and tried not to take any of his skittish reactions personally.
The two of you worked nicely, considering all the circumstances, and came up with some ideas that weren’t half bad. If you stopped to think why you were even doing all that in the first place, you’d have a hysterical laughing fit, so you just pretended like you were rehearsing a school play or something.
“You… need a ride?” Jonathan asked and you thought for half a minute before denying.
Surely it would be better if the two of you spent more time together since you were supposed to be dating. But Jonathan was still acting weird — more than usual — and you really didn’t want to impose or to feel worse than you already did from all his mistreatment.
“Uh, no, house’s not that far,” you lied, it was a good walk to your home, but Jonathan seemed relieved at your answer so you felt like you picked the right one.
You suppressed the need to huff, roll your eyes and push him in annoyance or do something else a middle schooler would do.
You also suppressed the will to smile politely at him as you said your goodbyes because, frankly, he wasn’t so deserving of it.
Phone numbers were exchanged in case of emergencies or needs to plan further, and you left before he could come up with something else. You were tired, drained really, from suppressing so much the whole day, and you couldn’t wait to sleep throughout the whole weekend if you could. Hoping no ‘Jonathan Byers loves Nancy Wheeler and would do anything for her’ emergencies would come up. Building up the courage to continue your own ‘You love Jonathan Byers and would do anything for him’ stupid plan.

Well, the hardest and also easiest mental worldview deconstruction to be made was that Nancy Wheeler was actually a nice gal.
It was easy because it happened only after your first lunch with your brand new boyfriend Jonathan, and his great best friends Steve Harrington and Nancy Wheeler herself. Because it took Nancy one single lunch to win you over with all that wit, brains, charm of hers. And it was hard because, let's be honest, you've been holding a grudge over her for absolutely nothing (let’s call it nothing, okay?) for… a couple of years, now.
It happened Monday, and Jonathan was waiting for you outside your classroom right before lunch break, ready to take you to meet his friends or whatever they were. You were caught by surprise, but you were also a great improviser, and so you tucked his hands into yours (ignored his astounded demeanor and the blush in his cheeks, and that electric wave that hit you again) and let him lead you down the hallways.
You tried not to pay attention to all the looks you received. If all that had happened before November, you wouldn’t even be noticed — neither you nor Jonathan noticeable enough to gather attention from your peers. After his… well, after everything that happened to him and around him after November 6th, though, Jonathan was a little more perceived around school grounds.
Your face burned and your palms sweat with all the eyes turned on you, but you mastered the art of looking blasé all the way to the cafeteria. All the way to the table where Steve and Nancy were sitting side by side, his arm over her shoulder as they talked quietly.
“Hey,” Jonathan greeted as you reached the table, and the couple looked up at you. Steve raised an eyebrow and Nancy’s face contorted in some way before settling into a smile. Jonathan introduced you by name. “we’re dating,” he said, mostly to Steve who didn’t seem to know the news.
“Oh, wow. Cool, man. And nice to meet you,” Steve nodded at you with his million-dollar smile.
“Same,” you answered before letting go of Jonathan’s hand, sitting down and getting your sandwich from your backpack.
Jonathan sat down beside you and you could feel how stiff he was moving. You’d normally reach out and try and reassure him through physical contact if he was a friend of yours. But even though you were dating, you didn’t know if he would react nicely to that. So you kept to yourself.
“It’s nice to finally meet you properly,” Nancy called out, reaching across the table to rest her hand against your arm. Her skin was warm. “I’m sorry about… the other day.”
Steve turned to her clearly confused, and you answered before he could ask questions.
“Don’t worry about it. Hey, we have Math together, don’t we?” you asked instead, and Nancy nodded before going on a rampage about the Math teacher who was an absolute asshole.
She didn’t seem like a huge talker, but that was just one of your misconceptions about her that she went off on proving you wrong about. She seemed cold and distant, but she was actually really attentive and asked questions about you all lunch. She seemed uptight and annoying, but she was actually really funny and amusing. She seemed arrogant and presumptuous, but she was actually really down to earth and offered to help you with some English assignments in exchange for you to help her with some Math assignments.
She talked quietly and smoothly, and had witty remarks to every single comment her boyfriend made — not all of them were dumb, and not all of Nancy’s answers bordered on mean, but some of them certainly did. Steve didn’t seem to mind, though. He looked at her as if she hung the Sun all the way up in the sky. It was funny to see them side by side. They had a lot in common, physically. Top line, casual-chic clothing, elegant fabric softener smell, ironed to no faults. Sharp-edged jaws and expressive eyes, silk-smooth tongues and winning smiles, charisma all over.
That’s as far as it went, though.
Her nerdy comments went in through Steve’s left ear and out through his right. Jonathan laughed at them. Her journalistic eye caught onto little details that went unnoticed by her boyfriend. Jonathan noticed them with her. Steve smiled politely at Jonathan’s dry jokes, not always understanding them, but Nancy hid her laughs behind her wrist.
As if god was trying to show you that opposites attract, and if the devil was trying to give him a counterpoint of: no, actually, similars attract. All happening right in front of your skeptical eyes in the middle of school lunch, in between Science and PE.
Jonathan walked you to your next class after it was all over, and you were overwhelmed with how much you enjoyed Nancy Wheeler’s company. Which made it all extra difficult, since now you understood Jonathan’s infatuation with her.
“See you later,” he said his goodbye at the gym entrance.
A group of people walked past the two of you and Jonathan thought it was a good idea to land a kiss on your cheek. Your breath hitched and you didn’t have the time to say goodbye back before Jonathan was walking to the main building, to his own class.
Your cheek burned the whole day, and so did the hand you used to hold his through the hallways, and your heart ached with the thoughts on your mind of how much Jonathan and Nancy seemed meant to be, and how much you wish they weren’t.

It was two whole weeks of that. Two whole weeks walking hand-in-hand with Jonathan and sitting with him, Nancy, and Steve at lunch. And sitting beside Nancy at the Math classes you shared, because she invited you to and you couldn’t say no.
And there was something about the three of them, something weird that they seemed to have in common. When they’d reminisce over something that happened around the time Will went missing, and they would stop and look at you mid-sentence sometimes, and one of them would suddenly change the subject.
You were curious, of course, it was part of your nature to be exceedingly curious at all times.
But they all seemed to hate to talk about it, even if they brought it up from time to time, and you seemed to recognize that constantly haunted look of Jonathan in his friends’ faces as well, and the look wasn’t as cute anymore.
So you didn’t pry.
Somewhere between the end of May and the beginning of June, Nancy and Steve asked you and Jonathan to go out with them on a double date, as if reading your mind for what could possibly be your worst nightmare, but again you couldn’t say no.
You might have picked your best outfit, and you might have done your hair more carefully than you usually did, and you might have put on an extra ring or necklace. And your parents might have noticed, and you might have lied and said you were going to a colleague’s birthday party and not on a double date to the movies and a restaurant with your weird fake boyfriend and his weird preppy friends.
Jonathan picked you up at seven sharp in his old Ford and he didn’t seem much different than usual outfit-wise, but he was definitely using cologne.
“You look nice,” he said as you entered the car and you tried not to swoon at the crumbs of his attention.
“You smell nice,” you answered, and it pleased you enough to see that blush of his creeping up his neck and cheeks.
Steve and Nancy were already there waiting under the marquee. Jonathan parked and the two of you left the car and went on your way to meet the other couple. Nancy greeted you with a tight hug. You wanted to throw yourself into oncoming traffic just as much as you wanted to stay in the unusual embrace for a long time.
“This is where your boyfriend gave me a taste of his amazing right hook,” Steve said to you, pointing at the little alley by the theater.
“Steve!” Nancy reprimanded, but it seemed like she was holding back a smile.
“What was all that about, anyway?” you asked, giving into your curiosity, eager for the whole story now that you could finally have it.
You forgot that dating Jonathan should probably mean that you’d know what it was all about already. He would’ve told the person he was dating, right? Thankfully no one seemed to notice your little slip.
“Jonathan was a bit of a creep, I was a huge of an asshole and Nancy sadly got caught in between us,” Steve answered honestly. “We’re all good now, though, aren’t we? All in the past.” He smiled at the other two, who nodded along and smiled back.
Jonathan and Nancy’s smiles didn’t seem as sincere as Steve’s. And that didn’t feel like the actual whole story, but again you didn’t pry because they were getting that weird haunted look.
Steve threw his arm over Nancy’s shoulder. “Let’s get some popcorn, my treat,” he said and started walking into the theater. Jonathan touched your lower back, guiding you, and you held back a sigh.
You were in for a long evening.
Indiana Jones conquered the Temple Of Doom, or whatever. You didn’t pay much attention, it was hard to with Jonathan’s arm draped over your shoulder the whole time and the whispered little comments he would make with Nancy — instead of you — through the film.
You went to a restaurant after, Nancy’s choice, not too far from the theater so you all walked there. Hand in hand again. Nancy and Steve behind you, talking about the movie. Jonathan tried to rile up a conversation about it with you — finally — but, as you hadn’t paid much attention, you didn’t have a lot to say.
Food was good and thankfully the topic of conversation wasn’t the movie, because you couldn’t pretend to have paid attention to it in front of the three of them at the same time. Instead, you talked about your summer plans. Well, mostly Steve’s summer plans, he was going on vacation with his parents, somewhere on the East Coast, maybe Hawaii? Nancy was just going to see her grandma for a couple of weeks up in Chicago. Your parents weren’t fans of travels, and Jonathan was… well, the guy was poor. So Steve’s plans were the most thrilling ones.
“Too bad your parents won’t wanna travel, you could have the house to yourselves,” Steve said with a smirk and a wiggle of his eyebrows.
You laughed loudly — mostly nervously — and Jonathan blushed. It was your usual responses at this point.
“Sure, yeah,” you said, if only not to leave a weird silence up, before looking at your wristwatch. “They’re very strict anyway, and look at that! I gotta be home soon,” you continued, and Jonathan coughed to hide a laugh.
“We should ask for the check,” he said and raised his hand to get the waiter’s attention.
That weird conversation was over, finally, and you paid for the dinner individually. By the grace of gods Steve didn’t comment on Jonathan not paying for you, since he paid for his own girlfriend, but he sure eyed you curiously as you handed your money.
“This was so nice, we should do it more often!” Nancy commented on your way back to the cars, her arm intertwined with yours as Steve and Jonathan steered behind. “It feels nice to have a normal friend after-” she stopped herself and her eyes widened, and she gulped loudly and didn’t finish her sentence.
You remembered Barb Holland, and her great English essays and her amazing grades in History, and her suspicious disappearance near Will’s back in November. How she supposedly ran away from home. How she didn’t seem at all like the type to do that.
Nancy was looking guilty and haunted, that look the three of them shared, and your curiosity was turning into apprehension of knowing what had happened. She let go of your arm, and she never finished her sentence. The boys also went quiet behind you. There was a weighted tension on top of the four of you.
You reached Steve’s bimmer and he touched Nancy’s arm to lead her to the passenger side, and she was still in a kind of haze as she waved goodbye from the window. Steve seemed worried, and so did Jonathan, but none of them said anything. And neither did you.
Jonathan took you home, one of his hipster band’s tape on the sound system, the stars out brightly and the most awkward of silences between the two of you.
There was no one out in your street to see you as he parked in your driveway, but he kissed your cheek goodbye all the same. And you held him tightly in a hug, wanting to comfort him even though you had no idea what haunted him. Crippling curiosity equal to a crippling fear, wishing for the truth and wishing to never having to find out the truth.

You had two final weeks of school before Summer and the great excuse of having to finish your essays and projects to hide in the library and not have to talk to the trio that confused you more and more every day.
But still, sometimes Nancy would stop by and study with you. Always helpful, and kind, and nice. You never talked about that night. Sometimes she’d bring Steve with her, and she’d tutor him and they didn’t bother you, and it felt good to have the company.
Sometimes Jonathan would stop by. He’d bring you lunch, he’d bring you books, he’d bring you comfort. The warmth of his presence was addictive, reminding you of late freshman year and the Science project you built together. And you dreaded the day this would all end, he’d forget about you with Nancy Wheeler in his arms, and you’d be nothing but an embarrassing and funny story to maybe tell their grandkids.
You were able to escape them one single day, to retake your final picture for that History collage, the one you used to replace Jonathan’s love portrait. As the class to present the projects came up, you shared a knowing look with him when you noticed he also replaced Nancy’s love portrait on his own collage. A secret between you, him, and little red lamp lights. A secret neither of you talked about. Those were starting to grow.
“How cute that you two have so much in common, you even chose the same format for your projects! I love collages,” one of your colleagues said to you after class was over.
Jonathan was waiting beside your table for you to gather your stuff, and you felt your knees weaken at the way he smiled from the compliment, none of that blush anymore, a pinch of almost confidence. You couldn’t know if you loved it or hated it.
“Mine doesn’t look as good, though,” he answered, pointing at your pictures as if he wasn’t the professional photographer, and you weren’t just someone with a hobby.
“You’re both adorable,” the colleague said before leaving, Jonathan thanked her all nonchalant as if used to it by now.
And you couldn’t come up with any words throughout the whole conversation, your throat constricted with the need to tell her to shut up and tell Jonathan how you felt for him, beg him to let you go. It wasn’t fun anymore.
He didn’t let you scurry away to the library, no more excuses to do so since the History project was the last one, and he held your hand through the hallways, and he held your bag for you, and he sat so close to you at the table bench, while Nancy ranted on about her Spanish essay, that you could feel the heat of his thigh pressed against yours, but his eyes never left Nancy’s as she spoke.
It felt as if there was an elephant at each of your shoulders, and you couldn’t stop staring at him, and he didn’t spare a single glance your way even as his arm was almost glued to yours with the heat and the sweat and the stickiness of early Summer. Your heart tight in your chest, beating fast and loud and strong against your ribcage, as if begging to be let out, to go rest on Jonathan’s hands where it belonged.

Summer came, and you stayed home. Not many friends to go out with, not many party invitations in your mailbox, no one else to see on a day-to-day basis except your parents. They asked about Jonathan once, because they saw him picking you up and bringing you back on that double date you had with Nancy and Steve. You said he was probably traveling, that you weren’t so close, you didn’t know, and they knew better not to ask again.
It was August already, a whole long month of Summer break where you’d missed him every day, missed his sweet smile, the way his blush would start by his neck and go up until it reached his cheeks, missed his calm and soothing tone of voice, missed the way he’d smell of pancakes and mint shampoo in the mornings.
Didn’t miss the way he would look at her.
But you missed her too, though. You missed Nancy’s company, and her sweet smile and her calm and soothing tone of voice. You even missed Steve and the way he’d compare everything to a basketball game, and how he high-fived you when Nancy quizzed him on the library and he’d get an answer right. In the weirdest turn of events, they became your friends. And you missed your friends.
Your body seemed to know how your brain thought and your heart ached, because when your father asked you to get groceries, your feet automatically walked further than needed and took you to Melvald’s on Main instead of the market near your house.
And of course he was there.
You knew he’d be there. He told you (and Nancy, and Steve, during that double date) he’d be taking a summer job with his mom, was dreading the tasks already but he could use the money.
He was stocking, standing in the cereal aisle seeming a little confused about where to put the Honeycomb and the Fruit Loops. And that same natural daylight from the outside reached him and made his skin glow, and there were no dirty windows between you two as you reached him without even noticing you had been walking towards him.
“Hey,” you called out, and he turned to you and smiled weirdly wide.
“Hi. Long time no see. How’s your summer?” he asked, putting down the cereal boxes.
You shrugged. “Nothing exciting. How’s Melvald’s treating you?”
“It’s not so hard. Not a big place,” he shrugged as well, and he was still smiling and he was taller than you so the sunlight behind you was hitting his eyes just right and your heart thumped.
“You’ve seen Nancy?” you asked because you liked to suffer, you’ve come to know. “She’s back from Chicago already?”
“Oh, I think she is. Will went to Mike’s yesterday, but I haven’t seen her, no.”
“Don’t you want to?” you pressed, because you weren’t suffering enough, apparently. He shot you a comically puzzled look before shrugging and smiling again.
“I guess? No more than I wanted to see you, though. Or, like, Steve, for that matter,” he answered and you huffed.
“Sure. Anyway, where’s the pasta sauce in here?” you changed the subject and he pointed towards a specific place.
You started walking without saying anything further and, to your surprise, he followed you.
“What, you didn’t miss me back?” he was teasing you, and it would’ve thrilled you just a few months ago how close you got to each other, and you would’ve reveled in any kind of attention he’d paid to you, but you just wanted to scream because it wasn’t fun anymore. It was painful.
You didn’t answer, because you wanted to tell him the truth, and tell him that yeah, you’ve missed him so much it ached, you’ve missed him so much you cried yourself to sleep once, you missed him so much and you couldn’t have him, he wasn’t yours, but you were his even if he didn’t know. Even if his eyes were never focused on you as yours were focused on him.
“C’mon, don’t go breaking my heart,” he teased again and you stopped abruptly right in front of the tomato sauce stand.
“Jonathan, please don’t do this,” you asked, voice wavering, and his smile dropped instantly at the sound of it.
“I’m sorry. What is it?” he asked earnestly, really had no idea, and you didn’t have it in you to be patient enough to spell it out for him.
“How long do we have to keep this up for?” you pleaded, turning to look at him. Your heart ached, your eyes burned, how could he not see it? How could he not see you? “We can just call it off now, yeah? We haven’t seen them yet, don’t even know if Steve’s back already, we can just say it happened over summer when they weren’t here.”
“What are you talking about?” he pushed the knife in deeper, your hands were shaking, you were almost begging for him to look at you, to see right through you so you wouldn’t have to say it out loud.
“Really, dude?” you asked loudly, saw his mom looking up from a magazine at the cashier counter to look at the two of you. “Our fake relationship thing? That amazing fucking plan of ours? It’s clearly not heading anywhere, Nancy and Steve are still together and she’s actually become my friend so it sucks to be in this position.” You gestured around you as if your mentioned friends would pop out of nowhere to your surprise. You were still loud, and you didn’t care. “Just do as I said that day, grow out some balls, and tell her the truth.”
Rich advice, coming from you.
Do as you say, don’t do as you do, or whatever.
You didn’t wait for an answer and forgot about the fucking sauce, and just started walking towards the store entrance so you could let all of this go and never have to deal with the ‘Jonathan Byers loves Nancy Wheeler and would do anything for her’ fiasco.
Joyce — Jonathan’s fucking mom, for Christ’s sake — called out to you as you stormed out of Melvald’s, you didn’t even know she knew your name, but you didn’t stop anyway. Not until there was a warm hand holding your arm, and you knew that hand by now, all its softness and its calluses, bends and curves and dents, and your heart was already broken but it somehow hurt and bled even more.
“Dude, please!” you begged again, and he was looking at you, searching for something in your eyes and yet he still couldn’t see it. Couldn’t see you.
“I’m sorry, what did I do? What can I do?”
“There’s nothing you can do, I think, just leave me alone,” you answered, and he let go of you and he seemed hurt by your words.
You walked back to your house and apologized to your dad for not bringing back his groceries, and he didn’t ask why when he saw your wet eyes. He made you tea, patted you on the head and you cried yourself to sleep again.

“A friend of yours is here,” your mom said as you left the shower, three whole days after your (fight? Was it a fight?) encounter with Jonathan. “Waiting in your room,” she said.
It should have confused you, made you wonder. But it didn’t. You knew it was him. Who else would it be?
It was Nancy Wheeler.
Sitting on your bed, and her hair was shorter and her cheeks were a darker shade of pink than they were when you last saw her on the last day of school before Summer break.
“Hi?” you said or asked, and she smiled when she saw you were there.
Got up and walked towards you and hugged you tightly, you missed that hug, and her freshly cut hair smelled of something floral.
She pulled you by your hand until you two were sitting in your bed, side by side.
“I broke up with Steve. Jonathan told me everything,” she said, and your tiny broken heart still had some strength in it to break even further, shockingly.
“Uh, good for you, I guess?” You shrugged, not sure what she wanted you to say. “When’s the wedding?” you clouded your pain with humor because, when didn’t you?
“I just said I broke up with Steve, what wedding?”
“Yours and Jonathan’s?” Why were they so difficult? Oblivious. Why did they enjoy torturing you?
“No, listen,” she called your name as if you weren’t paying attention. “Jonathan told me everything. The whole deal, the whole plan, the whole picture, everything.”
It was a funny déjà-vu. There was a ringing in your ear that kind of popped before the world went abruptly silent. You could see Nancy in front of you, staring at you with a weird misplaced smile, waiting for your answer — what did she want you to answer, honestly? — but she was kind of blurry. It felt like years before you gathered just enough brain power to answer her.
“He. What.”
She giggled, and that made the world go back to normal inside your head, before she rolled her eyes with amusement.
“You two are so dense,” she said, still smiling. “I had to spell it out for him, and I kinda saw it coming, but not from you.”
“Nancy, for the love of all things holy, what are you talking about?” You held her hands in yours, and she looked at your hands held together for a second before looking into your eyes again to talk.
“You’re in love with him,” she answered, and you weren’t surprised that she knew.
“Fucking duh, he’s the only one who can’t see it.” She laughed, and her eyes twinkled.
“And he’s in love with you,” she completed, and it wasn’t funny anymore.
“No, he’s not.”
“You’re the only one who can’t see it,” she threw back at you and you rolled your eyes at her wit — you loved it so much.
“Nancy, he likes you. Literally how we got here in the first place.” You gestured around you as if she could see how miserable you’ve been lately without him, and without your study sessions and your lunches together as a group. “If not to get with him, why did you break up with Steve?” you asked.
“There is… a lot that held us together. Not just Steve and me, but us and Jonathan as well. And I was just using Steve as a crutch, trying to pretend everything was fine and normal, but it isn’t, and it isn’t fair to either of us. And I noticed all that thanks to you being my friend.”
You remembered the date — again — and the way Nancy recoiled to herself at the end of it, and your friends’ collective haunted guilty look, and Will Byers and how he came back, and Barb Holland and how she did not.
“Jonathan came to my house to talk, we got a little lost in the middle of it all but he knocked some sense into me, and I like to think I’ve knocked some sense into him back,” she said, and she was still so calm and collected, but she felt lighter somehow, and she never stopped smiling sweetly at you. “You should go check.”
It was all Nancy Wheeler's fault.
I mean, literally. Quite from the beginning. Because it was all about Nancy Wheeler, wasn't it? It was all because of Nancy Wheeler, it was all for Nancy Wheeler.
She convinced you to go talk to Jonathan, and at this point you trusted her so freely that you did just that. She convinced you to give him a chance, and you convinced yourself you were doing it because she asked you to, you were doing it for her and not for yourself or Jonathan. She was a very persuasive little lady, you’ve come to find out.
The street where the Byers lived was weird as fuck, and the forest surrounding it gave you the worst chills ever, but you kept your calm as you rode your bike all the way to the Byers’ front yard.
You knocked, and Jonathan answered. He seemed surprised to see you, and that blush of his creeped up from his neck to his cheeks and you fell for him again just then.
“Hi,” he said, still staring.
“Hi. Can we talk?” He shook his head, came back to himself, and opened the door to let you in. “Where’s your family?”
“Mom’s still at Melvald’s, Will’s at Mike’s,” he answered, and started going down the hallway, so you followed him.
His room looked, felt and smelled like him and it was both comforting and distressing to be surrounded by Jonathan in all senses. You were still scared of how this conversation would go.
He went digging through some stuff in his desk, and when he found it he walked closer to you where you were still standing awkwardly by the door. He handed you something, a picture.
“You called it ‘Nancy Wheeler love portrait’, that day at the train station park,” he said while you observed again Nancy’s profile in the photo. You had it memorized at this point, burned to the back of your eyelids. “It really was,” he continued and you shot him a puzzled look. “It was a love portrait, it was love I guess.”
He shrugged, and only then you noticed he was holding something behind his back. He moved his hand, brought it forward and you saw that it was another picture but you couldn’t see what it was about. He smiled down adoringly at it before handing it to you.
It was you.
A photo taken of your profile. You were sitting at a desk at the school library, in front of a window, the light from the outside encompassing you in a kind of godly aura, specks of dust flying around you and a big smile on your lips as you looked down at your hands resting on top of the table.
It was so similar. It was the same angle, the same lightning, the same pose. And yet it was so different from the Nancy Wheeler love portrait.
“Your own love portrait,” Jonathan said, voice almost a whisper, and you wanted to look at him and check if he was blushing the way his voice made it seem like he was, but you couldn’t take your eyes off the photo. “Steve and Nancy are out of frame, you were laughing at something he just said, so relaxed and happy around our friends you didn’t even notice me taking the picture like a weirdo.”
He softly touched your hand that was holding the picture, just the tips of his fingers, and they were enough to ignite a spark that made your whole body burn. You stared at that contact of your skins for the very few seconds they lasted before Jonathan pulled his arm back and continued talking.
“I got a little lost in the middle of it all, I think. Forgot there was a plan. Forgot why it all began. Forgot about Nancy, and all I could think about was you. How I wanted to see you again day after day, and hold your hand through the hallways on our way to lunch, and sit beside you at the cafeteria table. And take you on dates without Steve’s stupid comments, just you and me, and you’d laugh at my jokes ‘cause you always do. And to take more pictures of you. Take pictures with you. Just, do stuff together. All the time.
And I was so scared that you’d notice that change in me, notice how far gone for you I was. I didn’t want to spend time apart but I also couldn’t even look at you without wanting to kiss you so bad. I’d be glued to you at all times, hurt from wanting you so much, and yet I couldn’t let you go. Didn’t want to ask you to let me go.”
You finally looked at him and, yes, he was blushing. But he was so determined, so confident. You decided you loved it.
“Me and Nancy, we… got a past. Not even romantic, but, we’ve been through a lot and I’ll tell you all about it, but. I think you’ve always been there, ever since that Science project freshman year, you’ve been there on the sidelines, and when we started talking again because of our stupid plan, I realized how much I’ve missed you. And I didn’t care about the plan anymore, and I didn’t want it to end because I just wanted it to be real.”
It was unbelievable how much you recognized those words, as if you were saying them yourself. You couldn’t help but smile, and Jonathan smiled back at you, and you wanted to kiss his smile senseless.
So you did just that.
You held the pictures far from your bodies, because you didn’t want to damage them, and you threw your other arm around his neck. He hugged your waist close to him and you kissed his smile, and he kissed your smile back. He tasted of pancakes and maple syrup and coffee with cream no sugar, and you feasted on that meal as if it was your last. You let your fingers wander through his hair, and it was soft and it smelled of mint shampoo, and your senses were overwhelmed, surrounded by Jonathan in all senses and it felt like dying and going to heaven.
You kissed for a long time before your lungs ran out of air, and your lips separated but your foreheads were still touching. You handed the pictures back to Jonathan, and he took them with a confused expression. You fished something out of your back pocket, your wallet, and you fished something out of your wallet, a picture. You handed that to him too.
“Jonathan Byers love portrait,” you both said at the same time and laughed together.
You kept your picture of him and he kept your picture of you, and you held onto his face that was still blushing and warm and soft, and he kissed you for a long time. And the plan didn’t work out, not really, but it kinda did, and it was all Nancy Wheeler’s fault.

I know you’ve posted about ratings in the past but I would be sooo curious to hear what you think about the finale ratings? They’ve been dipping so low the last few weeks that a part of me thinks it’s definitely that last scene that brought in more viewers. But, I dunno. 👀 It’ll also be interesting to see how the premiere does.

Okay, I had to do some research on this one. Before I get into the Season 4 ratings, I wanted to first look at 9-1-1's seasonal averages to see how they compare. (M = Million; D = Demographic)
General Data:
Season One:
premiered with 6.8M views and scored 1.78 among the 18-49yo demographic and ended with a 6.3M viewer average and a 1.65D average
Season Two:
premiered with a 9.8M viewers and scored 2.56 among the 18-49yo demographic and ended with 6.0M viewer average and a 1.37D average
Season Three:
premiered with 7.1M viewers and a 1.59 among the 18-49yo demographic and ended with 6.8M viewer average and a 1.38D average
Season Four:
premiered with 7.1M viewers and a 1.22 among the 18-49yo demographic and ended with approx. 6.4M viewers* (seen conflicting reports) and a 1.05D average.
(ALSO: Not really relevant but totally of interest: S1E1 of 9-1-1 Lone Star premiered with 11.4M views. WOW)
Season Four Data
Season 4 ended with a total Nielsen rating of 1.7 which is average for scripted network shows of this caliber (for context: Grey's Anatomy also ended with a 1.7). Scripted network shows are NEVER going to beat out football/live sports or reality television like but for what it is, 9-1-1 does pretty well. (source)
To your point about the ratings dipping low lately, the truth is that Season 4's episodic ratings have dropped significantly compared to 9-1-1's previous seasons (1.53, 1.21, and 1.19 were their lowest episodic ratings for S1-3 respectively with 0.85 being Season 4's lowest episodic rating. OUCH). Even though 9-1-1's episodic ratings have dropped this season, their viewer average remains the same. 9-1-1 has NEVER dropped below 5.1M viewers (their highest viewer count, of course, being 9.8M for S2E1). Their highest views this season was Episode 2 "Alone Together" with 7.2M, and their lowest views this season was Episode 12 "Treasure Hunt" with 5.8M. (source)
It's hard to say what, exactly, caused this decline but the world was in shambles for a minute there so I'm not stressed about it. Interestingly, 9-1-1's episodic ratings for Season 4 dropped after their midseason hiatus; not sure why or if that's even calculable, but it is fascinating. As for the uptick in viewers like you mentioned, it's fair to say that the end of Episode 13 did draw more viewers. Whether it's the buddie of it all or something else, 9-1-1's demographic responds well to story arcs that follow their main characters (ex. episodes 3-5, the Daniel Buckley saga, clocked in the second highest views all season, and the tsunami arc clocked in some of the highest views of Season 3). Incidentally, I think this is why their views were kind of messy this year. A lot of episodes this season were filler episodes. There weren't a lot of major plot points to pursue and there definitely wasn't a lot of character development, especially not among the original cast members.
Now, okay. Here's where we dip into opinion territory.

Opinions
While I personally love when 9-1-1's season finales are wrapped up in a nice little bow with little-to-no cliffhangers, I'm not sure I would have done that this year. As I mentioned before, there were very little substantive storylines in 9-1-1 this year. The "meatiest" storylines either focused on other people (Albert in the pileup, Hen's mom being ill), were only one or two episodes, or didn't have enough development that would have made the story, and eventual resolution, worthwhile (i.e. the shooting). Maddie's PPD has yet to be resolved, but when it comes to sensationalist television and what actually draws people in, Eddie's recovery from the shooting would have been far more engaging (NOTE: I love Maddie and I think her story is important, I'm just speaking in general). Obviously, this season was cut short for COVID reasons, but those missing four episodes really do make a difference when it comes to character growth/plot development. I'm looking forward to those additional four episodes next year!
While I'm on the topic of storylines and audience engagement, I think one problem 911 is running into is where and how they stand against 911LS. When you have two shows of relatively the same caliber, you have to figure out how to distinguish one from the other, otherwise your viewers will just be watching two versions of the same story. Tim and Brad have decided to distinguish the two shows by having Lone Star lean into the more serious, gritty storylines (i.e. Judd and Grace's accident, multiple on-screen suicide attempts, the arsonist immolating himself, etc), and that's great, but the problem is that 9-1-1 has drifted into "safe" territory. You can always expect a goofy little laugh and to end the episode on a relatively happy note, and that's nice and all, but that's not how you build a successful show. The WORST thing 9-1-1 could do right now is play it safe. They only have about one or two more seasons before viewer fatigue starts to set in if they keep going this route. Sure, they'll keep the majority of their loyal viewers by virtue of the fact that they've spent years invested in this show and have no interest in not watching, but that's a lazy way to keep viewers. 9-1-1 should continue with their velocity of having Eddie get shot. That scene alone made all 40+ minutes of the episode worth it. Give the characters more storylines that don't always focus on their emotions. I love Buck's growth, Bobby's struggle with sobriety, and Hen's journey into med school, but 9-1-1's writers need to push the boundaries of the boxes they've written themselves into.
And this isn't about Buddie, but if the relationship between Buck and Eddie were to go fully, explicitly canon, ratings would SOAR. They're not bad as it is, but if they went that extra mile, I imagine it would push them well out of the 1.7 range and possibly into the 1.9-2.0. The LGBTQ+ community is a very loud community; combined with the quality of the story being told through Buck and Eddie and how revolutionary it would be to have two gay/bisexual, attractive, leading men on a primetime network show fall in love and build a family together? That'd be a ratings goldmine. 9-1-1 is comfortable and they have strong network backing; if ever they were going to take a risk like that, the next two-ish years would be the perfect time to do it.
Finally, to your last point I think 9-1-1 Season 5 is on a pretty good trajectory to premiere well. Their premieres always pull in their highest views (S1: 6.8M, S2: 9.8M, S3: 7.163M and S4: 7.193M, respectively), so if I had to guess, I'd say Season 5 is going to premiere with a comfortable 6.9M - 7.1M viewers. We'll see where things go with the development of Season 5, what kind of storylines they come up with, and how we leave off by the end of the first half of the season, but I'm optimistic and I'm really looking forward to it!

Anne with an E Season 3
What a beautiful season! I loved Anne’s character growth and her relationship with Matthew and Marilla. This season had so many interesting storylines and compelling characters. I always love the life lessons and women empowerment this show presents. The romantic aspects of the season and the kiss in that last episode were perfect.
Parasite (2019)
This is a masterpiece. I watched it with my family on cinemas and we all loved it. The acting was great, there was a perfect combination of comedy and drama and the ending was amazing; it was depressing yet very realistic that it hurt my soul.
F E B R U A R Y
Ragnarok Season 1
Never thought I’d like a show about Thor, but this take on norse mythology was amazing to watch. I loved the protagonist and the setting of the show. This is a Norwegian fantasy show and all the actors are very talented. The characters (although weird) were very unique and the ending left me so excited for season 2.
Altered Carbon Season 1
This is not only a show, is an experience. The cast, the setting, the plot and the relationships are fantastic. It has many action scenes I enjoyed, it has mystery and a great protagonist. The world building is so rich and interesting. I love Joel Kinnaman and Martha Higareda, they did an amazing acting job and their chemistry was wonderful. Everything about s1 was so great but, don’t watch s2, it is terrible. You can just watch season 1 as a mini series and be happy.
Jojo Rabbit (2019)
This movie broke my heart but also made me laugh so hard. I love the characters and the actors. The soundtrack was brilliant and the development of the story was so well done. It has many remarkable moments and quotes I loved. I never thought I’d like a movie about the second world war this much but I did. This movie deserves so much more recognition because it is fantastic, one of my all time favorites.

Elite Season 3
Not the best season of the show but it was great. It was one of my most anticipated season premieres and I binge-watched it like crazy. I love the characters and the relationships, I’m so invested in all the stories and the vibe of this show. The new characters were the weakest part of the season but overall there were many amazing moments I loved. Even Kevin McHale made a cameo!! Can’t wait for season 4.
The Chronicles of Narnia trilogy (2005 - 2010)
I watched these movies after reading the book series and I feel in love with the characters. I love the Pevensies so much, Edmund is my favorite but I love them all. The lion the witch and the wardrobe is my favorite movie out of the 3 but they all are great movies in my opinion. Caspian is also a fantastic character. The magic and the meaning of the stories are amazing and timeless.
The hunger games saga (2012 - 2015)
I rewatched this saga with my sister and we loved it. We cried and suffered throughout Mockingjay part 1 & 2 of course. I love this world so much, it is vast, interesting and full of epic moments. Katniss is a queen and Peeta is my beautiful soft boy. I love Finnick, Haymitch, Effie and many other characters. The social commentary of these movies and the rebellion are very impactful aspects the saga achieved.

El hoyo (2019)
This movie is disturbing in many ways but it is so great. This is a dystopia that talks about the worst aspects of society. It’s hard to see people’s behaviors and attitudes towards each other but you know they are realistic. The movie shows many things you can reflect on. The acting was great, the characters were interesting and the tone was grimm and mysterious.
Outer Banks Season 1
Teenage drama, summer setting, a hidden treasure and many adventures. The characters are interesting, the cast is gorgeous and the found family relationship of the group is beautiful. This show feels so fresh and exciting, the plot is very fun to follow but it also deals with hard topics like toxic relationships and abusive families.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1 (2010) & part 2 (2011)
I rewatched these movies after reading the book and I fell more in love with the world, with Harry and with the conclusion of the story. I love part 1 a little bit more but both movies have such an epic feeling to me. I love the anticipation for the Battle of Hogwarts and the exciting fighting scenes. The ending always makes me cry, I love it.
The imitation game (2014)
This movie is so important, everyone should watch it. It is based on true events and Benedict Cumberbatch is amazing in it, his performance was stunning. I loved the protagonist, the story and the side characters. Upon this rewatch I noticed more how everything was remarkable, there were a lot of well written dramatic scenes and the moments near the end broke my heart.

Gotham Season 5
I love Gotham so much!!! This season was amazing but so short, I needed more. I love Bruce and seeing how he became Batman was an epic experience. I love the heroes, the villains, the dynamics between many characters and the humor of this show. I will miss Gotham and the many great episodes and adventures it gave me. Also, I love Oswald and Nygma together and for me they are married and in love.
Dark Season 1 - 3
I rewatched the first 2 seasons in preparation for the third one’s premiere and I watched s3 in a day. I was so obsessed. This show is so brilliant, it plays with your mind and it deals with a lot of existential topics. I love it so so much, is one of my favorites forever. Season 2 is my favorite but overall the show has so many great things to offer. It has drama, great characters, shocking plot twists, an ideal amount of romance and the weirdest, most complicated family tree ever.
Star Wars Original trilogy (1977 - 1883)
I’m surprised I finally watched these movies, and I’m even more surprised I loved them! Luke is a fantastic protagonist, Darth Vader is an epic villain and the world is so immersive. I want to be a Jedi, I want to have adventures around the galaxy. I love Han and Leia’s love story and I love R2, C-3PO and Chewie.

Star Wars Sequel trilogy (2015 - 2019)
These movies for me were amazing, well episode 9 not so much but overall the trilogy was great. I love the new characters and all the references to the original trilogy. Episode 7 feels so nostalgic to me even though I watched the whole Star Wars saga this year. I love the character development of practically every single character here and I love the epic feeling of the fight scenes. In my opinion this trilogy is worth watching, you can’t change my mind.
Barbie and the magic of pegasus (2005)
I’m a sucker for old Barbie movies and this year I made a rewatch marathon with my sister. This one was the one that stayed on my mind for many weeks. I love the magic of the story and the relationship between Annika and Aidan.
The truth about the Harry Quebert affair Season 1
Amazing actors, intriguing premise and a well written mystery. I love this show and its book so much, this is an awesome book to tv adaptation. The plot is brilliant, the setting is beautiful and the characters are interesting. I love Harry and Marcus’s relationship, I love Nola, I love how the pieces fit together so perfectly and how there are no loose ends. This show is very underrated, it deserves more recognition because it’s fantastic.
The baby-sitters club Season 1
This show is so cute and funny. I love the cast, they’re perfect for their roles. It has quite a simple premise but it talks about many important topics of today’s society. The aesthetic of the show is so beautiful, is perfect to watch with you family and it has great pop culture references. I love the vibe of the show and I’m so glad it got renewed for a second season!

The umbrella academy Season 2
I watched this twice and I liked it better the second time around. I still can’t decide which Hargreeves I love the most, they’re all amazing in their own way. This season was great, it had many beautiful moments and great action sequences. It also had baby Pogo. Do yourself a favor: watch it and listen to the soundtrack.
House of Anubis Season 1
I rewatched one of my favorite shows of my pre-teenage years and I loved season 1 a lot, s2 is not that great and s3 doesn’t exist for me but s1 is perfect. I love the mystery, the boarding school setting, the teen drama and the characters so much. Fabina forever!!!
The truman show (1998)
This movie is FANTASTIC. It has comedy, drama, romance and sci-fi elements with a concept that makes it an instant classic. This was the first time I watched it and I’m amazed by how brilliant it is and how many references to spirituality and capitalism it has. It has a great villain and a protagonist whose character arc is wonderful to watch. I loved the iconic Truman Burbank quote and the ending was just perfect.

A series of unfortunate events Season 2 & 3
Rewatching and old favorite always feels so great. I have no words to describe how much I love this series and the Baudelaire siblings. This show is perfect, it has a hilarious sense of humor I love. I love the drama, the tragedy and the ridiculous schemes Count Olaf plots. It also has music and a cast of actors I adore. Season 1 is also amazing but my favorites are 2 & 3.
Tinker Bell and the great fairy rescue (2010)
I made a marathon of all the Tinker Bell movies with my sister and this one was a surprise. I never thought I’d like it because my memories of it weren’t particularly good but wow, this movie was so cute and full of heart. Everything you hope to see in a fairies movie is here. It’s entertaining and very magical.

Julie and the Phantoms Season 1
BEST SHOW EVER! I’ve been screaming my love for jatp everywhere, I even made a video about it. This show came to save my 2020. I love the characters, the cast, the ships, the MUSIC, the plot... Every single thing is amazing. I can’t recommend it enough, please watch it and you will see the great masterpiece Kenny Ortega created.
The rocky horror picture show (1975)
I rewatched this movie for Halloween and I realised how much I enjoy it. I love it. It is weird and very sexual but it’s brilliant and has awesome songs. The characters are unique and the situations are bizzarre, the plot starts being simple but it ends in full science fiction madness. Now I need to go to a screening of the movie.

Lost Season 4
I mention only season 4 because with this rewatch I realized it’s my favorite but ALL SEASONS are part of my best tv shows of the year. Lost is a show that changed my perspective on tv and gave me so many great life lessons. It is a masterpiece. It has an awesome cast of characters, drama, comedy and mystery. This show is superior to newer shows in many ways, it is so well done and the season finales are always packed with action and emotive moments. It uses foreshadowing, flashbacks, flashforwards and many other brilliant narrative devices that make the show a unique experience. Worth watching even after many years after its ending.

Gravity Falls Season 1 & 2
Another rewatch. This is my favorite animated show. I love it so so much. Dipper Pines and me are practically the same person, I relate to him a lot. I love the mystery of the show, all the supernatural creatures, the science fiction and the plot twists. This is more than just a show for kids, this is a masterpiece of storytelling and animation.
Alice in Wonderland (1951)
I decided after re-reading the books to give this movie another chance because I didn’t use to like it. But oh boy, this time I loved it. I loved the songs and the madness of Wonderland. I get now why is many people’s favorite.
The queen’s gambit Season 1
I guess I love chess now, like every person who watched this show. The acting was superb, the characters and the plot were very well written. The pacing, the soundtrack, the setting, I loved everything. Anya Taylor-Joy is a queen, I have no doubt of that. I loved the ending, I was so proud of Beth Harmon!
A Christmas carol (2009)
My sister has always loved this movie but I wasn’t a big fan. This year I read the book, and watching the movie again made me appreciate the story a lot. I’m a big fan now, I think this movie is unique because it has motion capture animation, a timeless story and Jim Carrey acting multiple roles. A true gem in my opinion.

OBX Season 2 Review
I just finished and I have too many feelings so y’all gotta have to put up with me hehe.
I’m gonna talk about the main plot in general and then gonna talk about the most interesting characters and some other stuff.
I’m not putting a spoiler tag on this so it’s more accessible for the people that don’t mind reading spoilers but it should be obvious that this review isn’t spoiler free.
Main plotline
It was okay. Nothing too crazy but also not very realistic but it’s fiction afterall, so I don’t mind. I loved that they kept the treasure hunt theme going even after the gold was lost. Also loved that it was Pope’s plotline and he got more to his character thanks to it but it was also pretty obvious that every other character suffered because of that. So I’m hoping they’re gonna stick with that, S1 was John B, S2 was Pope, hoping for S3 to be JJ but from how the season ended, it looks like it’s gonna be John B again but who knows, I have hope.
There were some things that I didn’t like for sure, timeline issues, continuity problems but it’s fine, I can overlook it for the sake of the story. I was just missing some real Pogue action, they kept them apart quite often or just split up in smaller teams. I’m also a little meh about the whole fact that they’re okay with being on a deserted island in the middle of nowhere where they could potentially die? Idk that was weird but they hopefully can just get off the island whenever they want.
JJ
My boy first, of course. He was as beautiful as always but I lowkey hate how they treated him this season. He was more of a comedic relief character than he was already in the first season with less iconic lines and even his friends treated him like a stupid child even though he had some great input. Yes of course he is a reckless character that fucks shit up quite some time but he is still the most loyal of them all. He would willingly go to jail and die for them and yet, I feel like they don’t appreciate him enough. Now that Luke is gone too, he’s basically homeless without a legal guardian and he only has his found family. Please treat him better and please give him some actual character development next season, thanks.
John B
I’m really conflicted about him. He is fucking stupid sometimes but then again he is a good guy. He can be such a good but also such a shitty (boy)friend. Idk man, I like watching him but sometimes someone needs to slap some sense into him. I’m glad he is doing okay and I’m really curious to see what Season 3 has in store for him.
Pope
I’m so happy he got more storyline this season. Who would have thought he would have such a great family tree? He for sure didn’t haha. I’m glad he wasn’t just a full nerd all the time and actually got into a few fights. He deserved the screen time and Jonathan did a wonderful job portraying him. I feel really bad that he didn’t get a single thing this season. No gold, no cross, no Kie.
Kiara
Eh, I can't get to vibe with her this season. Most of the time she was just stupid, running around yelling dumb stuff, treating her parents and especially Pope like shit. We all knew that Pope and Kiara wouldn’t be together for long but honestly girl, what was that? Flirting with him but never reacting when he tried stuff, then having sex with him, knowing full well he has feelings for you and then just dumping him? Nah girl, that’s not it. You’re better off at boarding school.
Sarah
Poor baby girl. You deserve better, why are they putting you in so much pain? Honestly, first she’s getting kidnapped, then she’s a fugitive at the brink of death multiple times, she watches her father explode into pieces in front of her only to get kidnapped again to find out that he’s alive and still wants to take her with him AND THEN HE TRIES TO KILL HIS OWN DAUGHTER? Girl needs therapy, I’m telling you. She had already been so conflicted in season one and season two didn’t make it any better. Give her a break, please.
Rafe
He can still go choke. For real. Like, we know that he’s apparently been turning into a psychopath since he was ten and Ward only pushed him further to the brink. Don’t get me wrong, it was amazing to see how he was spiraling during the season, how he was losing his mind more and more and Drew did that so well but god, he did it so well that I just want Rafe to die.
Topper
This is a quick one. I was really hoping for a good redemption arc and he kind of started to get one but then his unhealthy Sarah obsession kicked and I was like nah boy, get the fuck away from the Pogues, thanks. Let’s see how it goes in the next season.
Side Characters
I’m too lazy to list more in detail. Ward is a shit but too smart for his own good. Rose is such a gold digger but she really loves her family. Wheezie is the MVP and she deserves to be with her sister in peace. Kiara’s parents...I feel bad for them, they just want the best for her kid but get treated like shit. I also feel bad for Mr. Heyward who is so worried about Pope without really knowing anything. I’m glad Shoupe came around in the end, there’s some good cop in him. Luke is still a shit father and I’m glad he’s gone but for some reason I doubt this was the last time we’ve seen him.
Overall
The season started off quite slow but as soon as the Pogues were united again I started to get the vibe back. My favourite was probably the middle part of part 4,5,6. The ending was a little too crazy for my taste but it wasn’t bad in general.
I’d give this season a 7/10. There’s a lot of things to improve and things I’m looking forward the next season, hopefully with more development for JJ and some therapy for Sarah.

Cobra Kai LOVE
So I finally got to watch all of Cobra Kai after loving the first two free episodes on Youtube but not affording it or having access til Netflix.
Dad and I nostalgia tripped it together and it's so good and it was also a great little family thing to do for us, since we always watched the movies as a family and are missing Mom, and I cried (there were some moments in season 2 especially hard) and laughed and we both loved it and I can't wait for season 3.
What can you say about a show that picks up 30 years after a properties heyday and kills as a tie-in! That honours the themes, and even better the cheese and feelings of the originals. Be it kick-ass karate, 80s style and music, the over the top plotting, and the profound kinda searching for inner life peace mixed with silly karate moves or metaphors and longing for Dad guidance.
I absolutely adore Johnny, who is by no means a perfect person. He's a stunted functional alcoholic who reopens his best part of his life, he tragically peaked in high-school (Christ!), for the best intentioned reasons, not realizing until committing the same mistakes how toxic it was the first go round.
Daniel. Oh you sweet fucking it up-ward man. Every movie was Miyagi having to help you pull your hot head out of your own ass because you were desperate to earn inner acceptance through outer validation and he's not around to do it anymore and you sweet pea think you've got it figured out, that you can give it to kids or protect them from the bullying toxicity of the way that high-school and a loss of place moving to California and Cobra Kai did you in, but you just keep jumping from victim to projecting and anticipating victim-hood and responding against Miyagi's first lesson, learn karate so you don't have to use it to fight.
It's sad and beautiful that these two are twinned and stuck in their pasts. Man-children in their 50s still trying to grow up (And figure out technology in Johnny's case LOL) hurting their future generation.
The teen themes are great.
Teen Breakdown of S1 & S2
The beginning popular crowd being easy and simple bullies. Morphing in Season 2 as both Cobra Kai and Demetri, Robbie and Sam trade off with Hawk and Tory on are we the bullied or the bullies all at once. Free for all high-school fight!
Aisha and Miguel represent the honesty of strength of self and confidence in finding themselves and their voice in Cobra Kai.
Hawk and Demitri, of using a newfound self to bully or staying safe to play victim.
Robbie as the growth from getting respect and guidance from Miyagi karate and Daniel, being the truest student, to the heartbreaking reality it doesn't mean you still don't crave wanting to be declared ultimate right or winner and fuck yourself over with your past issues.
As Miguel does the twin tango with him in having innate respectability and good moral guidance, even passing it to Johnny, but slipping into loss at the karate finals, mentally giving into loss of morality being violent to show his strength and losing himself and his GF, and physically when he's hurt (please be just hurt) defending the good guidance of mercy and stopping fighting.
But yeah, I could do essays on all the teens.
Then there's Sam, Daniel 's daughter. Robbie's mirror student and Aisha should be her foil but I fear based on a rumour and the way of season 2, they went with the easier and show attractive rival GF Tory. Samantha Larusso is a problem. She is marked good, to be going the way of Robbie to being the child of the former protagonist that leads into a creation of harmony among the two karate's and teachers/families/philosophies. Instead despite the show sympathizing and trying to identify with her as that role, she's straight up a cause of strife and exhibits neither the good traits of Miyagi karate, or a inner self confident bravado of Cobra Kai. She's almost the bizzaro evil version of a teen Ali, and that guy from the third movie. She thinks she's both victim and bad ass and she's just someone who needs a good dose of someone sitting her down to tell her she's owed or earned either status. And Aisha, the friend she wasted for faux status as a popular pretty girl, as well as her adult parents letting her currently skate responsibilities of teenage dramas and violence, and her suitors, whom she waffles unhealthy betwixt so that they all suffer, are the ones to do it. She doesn't need her ass kicked by Tory, who is a one note character, she needs her mindset toggled by realizing her self-wants aren't priority. Basically grow up, and outta the me mentality.
What's fabulous is the show honoring it's roots in teen drama and life so it's not like the drama is too over the top. How their world revolves around them and their perception of the importance of their wants. Romance. Party. Popularity. Identity.
Leading to the teenage version of power posturing. Bullying. (Which even the adults haven't mastered escape from.)
The high-school pettiness and importance of structure and status and coolness. The different norms of today versus the 80's that are still about wealth, the right looks (cultural or physical), and violence being the forever enforcer. Of course kids will break down along the lines of Cobra Kai and Miyagi karate. Brute correctness or passive acceptance?
Seeking strength and refusing to accept weakness of self builds confidence. Using that strength to physically fight in anything but defense brings a cycle of conflict and violence.
Neither the past nor the present generation ignore the other big life influence of the age. There you have the Daddy or parental abandonment angles.
Johnny's step dad failed him in absentee. Kreese used his position as teacher to abuse him. Johnny failed his kid in absentee. Johnny tries to uses his teacher position with Miguel to fix all these errors. Meanwhile Daniel is over there in the opposite corner with lost his father figure, and then Miyagi taught him respect and guidance and Daniel regained one and clung, and now Daniel is a lost or losing father figure to his own son and daughter, the family unit does not respect him or seek his guide. So he entwines his then teaching Sam and Robbie as a fix.
But does karate fix this shit?
So all these kids they drag in are confounded by the lessons because a step would be stop you yokels and talk or acknowledge what really happened in high-school and with All Valley and Ali and Kreese and Miyagi. And move on.
You won 30 years ago Daniel. Miyagi was a great old man and your teacher and like a Dad but you never had to be the best or have the girl to earn him. You got bullied by Kreese & co, were devalued because you weren't rich or popular in high-school. Some people were dicks. Or worse. Tell the world. You don't have to beat them now and forever to hold to knowing that. Be a happy car salesman and focus on your own kids.
Johnny, 30 years have passed my dude. You were okay with defeat when you gave Daniel that trophy and said he was all right. Cling to that guy, not the jerk with a shitty teacher/Dad, pining for a girl you were in conflict with. And stop reliving the mindset you were the loser in those things ending. You missed out on living with your losses and celebrating the moments between and after. Find a GF. Reconcile with your biological son. Admire and mentor your students of now. Take a lesson from your Miguel and be like the young man you clearly are learning from. You will never be a loser to this kid, you will always be the bad ass who defended him.
Also also, I hilariously crack-ship Daniel/Johnny as a love hate bromance. HEAD GAMES vid it!!
Also, Daniel's wife is a treasure with her snark on the childishness of this karate feud. She the MVP.
And I legit cried with my Dad and the Miyagi grave visit. At the Tommy scenes. At the Miguel voicemail. At the Mrs. Larusso Dad on my shoulder scene.

who is your favorite character in 2?
Eliot Waugh has my whole entire heart. So everyone on this show is ridiculously smart, but I love how quiet Eliot is about being smart. Like he’s so extra in every other aspect of life, but his intelligence is the one thing he doesn’t really flaunt. I also relate to how guarded he is, and all I want for him is happiness.
who is your least favorite character in 1?
I feel like with a bunch of characters on The 100 I’m pretty indifferent to them, but I think this is a tie for me between Finn and Jaha. I pretty much found Finn annoying right off the bat. And I think I was pretty indifferent to Jaha before the whole City of Light mess? But then I was like, mmm nope.
what is your favorite episode of 4?
WOWEE this is very tough for me, because I feel like I say a lot of episodes of Schitt’s Creek are my favorite. For this I’m picking 3x13 “Grad Night” because it has so many sweet moments between different characters. I love how Ted comes to Alexis’ graduation, and then Moira surprises her with the Jazzagals performance. And of course Patrick asking David out to dinner thinking it’s a date, but then David invites Stevie not realizing that. Ugh, the whole thing is just so great.
what is your favorite season of 5?
So Gossip Girl does get a bit crazy (even though it was already crazy) when they go to college, so I think season 2 is my favorite, though I almost picked season 3 because it has the best Thanksgiving episode (The Treasures of Serena Madre for anyone interested). I really like watching Chuck and Blair’s dynamic throughout s2, so I think that’s a big part of it for me.
who is your favorite couple in 3?
Um, they’re not together yet, but Angie and Will? I absolutely love their dynamic, and it’s the perfect set up for good slow burn, which has been really fun to watch so far.
who is your favorite couple in 2?
Quentin and Eliot. They’re just so soft with each other, and I think about the Mosaic Timeline at least once a day, tbh. Don’t mind me, I’m making myself sad haha.
what is your favorite episode of 1?
4x07 “Gimme Shelter”. Emori is my favorite character, and this is such a good episode for her. Every moment she thinks she’s safe, she has this realization that just because she’s with Murphy doesn’t mean that people will necessarily accept her or treat her as one of them? And like Murphy says, she made a survivor’s move because she’s spent her whole life working to stay alive. I also think it’s a very good Bellamy episode, because he has to wrestle with the not being able to save everybody thing and all the guilt he carries. Good episode for my two faves.
what is your favorite episode of 5?
2x18 “The Age of Dissonance”. Because oh my goodness, I love when characters participate in the school play. There’s so much drama surrounding their real lives and college acceptances which is very real omg. And as a theater person, I really feel so bad for that poor stage manager because the whole production just went terribly wrong.
what is your favorite season of 2?
Season 3! It has my two favorite episodes (A Life in the Day and All That Josh). And I think just seeing them all on this quest throughout the season is a really good way to connect all the events. It was definitely the most fun. And there was a lot of singing? All around great time.
how long have you watched 1?
I started watching The 100 in the summer of 2017. Me and a friend binge watched the first two seasons when I was visiting her one weekend. I started s3 myself but only got a couple episodes in before someone (it might have been Octavia at the time?) was getting on my nerves so I put it down. I didn’t pick it back up again until last January, and by then I had forgotten so much of what happened in the first couple seasons that I watched the rest and then watched s1 and s2 again just to remember what happened. But then I got to watch s6 live! So truly, I haven’t watched it for that long, but it feels like it’s taken over my life.
how did you become interested in 3?
I missed having Leighton Meester in my life, since I haven’t seen her in anything since Gossip Girl. So I said, well guess I’ll watch this.
who is your favorite actor in 4?
Catherine O’Hara. But Annie Murphy comes in close second.
which do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5?
Gossip Girl will always hold a special place in my heart, so if I had to choose, it would be that one for sure.
which show have you seen more episodes of, 1 or 3?
The 100, since it has more episodes.
if you could be anyone from 4, who would you be?
I would be Alexis, definitely. Her outfits are my aspirational style goals (I also already kind of dress like her?), and I was her for Halloween. Also now the executive director where I work told me that whenever he watches Schitt’s Creek now he just thinks of me when Alexis makes her hand gestures, because I do a lot of those.
would a crossover between 3 and 4 work?
I could kind of see a Single Parents and Schitt’s Creek crossover being funny? Like I think that all the characters are pretty ridiculous, so it would be fun to see them interact. But would it make sense? Probably not.
pair two characters in 1 who would make an unlikely but strangely okay couple?
I’m actually very into Niytavia? I just think Niylah is such a calming presence and person, and Octavia needs that. They would have a really chill relationship. Also if someone told me they hooked up in the bunker, I would believe it.
overall, which show has the better storyline, 3 or 5?
It’s kind of hard to compare Single Parents to Gossip Girl since they are so wildly different. But I’m gonna say Single Parents, only because I find it to be more realistic.
which has the better theme music, 2 or 4?
I really love the horns in the Schitt’s Creek theme, like it’s super distinct.

godddd i’m on the last episode of season 1 when keith is thinking practically about not going back to save allura and it comes off to the team as ruthless. and FUCK i miss that guy, he was so gd interesting. imagine the keith/lotor parallels they could have set up with keith struggling with his impulses to make these utilitarian decisions as leader. how keith could have had to confront his own convictions -- his own flaws -- by seeing them mirrored in lotor instead of just handwavey maturation offscreen and “oh yeah guess keiths the fully fledged leader now”... tbh i’m a little scared to move into s2 bc i Was Not a fan of that season the first time around, specifically bc it’s where keith’s arc started going in a direction that bored the hell outta me, but regardless i’ll always treasure the potential of s1 keith in my heart

The TV shows I have watched in 2021, part 1.
Shows I finished:
The Uncanny Counter: Exciting, full of humor and heart and found family, and the character is so lovable and pulls very hard on your heartstrings. That is the strongest aspect of that show, for me. There's a lot of talk about human greed and corruption and other things as that is how the demons in the show feeds, which I sometimes felt a little too heavy handed and the shows spend a bit too much time on that aspect of the plot, but the story manages to be pretty fast-paced, does not drag on too much and there is always some tension there to grab you, so I was never bored.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, s4: This show was so self-aware of itself; both in terms of their flaws and what made them great that they actually managed to be a pretty chill and fun watch. But as the series progressed they somehow lost that spark and the ability, took itself maybe a bit too seriously and yet not serious enough so a part of it was just too silly and some things felt like they were trying to hard to be bold and dark but failed.
Mr. Queen: Shin Hye Sun's amazing performance in the lead role makes Mr. Queen a pretty decent and fun show. It's rather light, funny and exciting. The drama would not be the same without her. It did drag a bit, especially in the beginning, or feel a bit all over the place. A fun, light fusion sageuk.
Signal: I can understand all the praise this show has received and I enjoyed it, but they also never hooked me in the way that I did. But then again this isn't my type of genre and a lot of these types of shows don't manage to do so.
Extraordinary You: At its core, this is a very ordinary teendrama about love and friendship and finding oneself. The drama does a lot of these things incredibly well It's not perfect, but it's so sweet and with a huge heart behind it where you can feel all the emotions the characters are feeling and all of the character, or almost all of them, are so lovable. The concept of it is quite neat, and it does manage to do something new, while also just telling a very standard teendrama story.
Dickinson, s2: It doesn't look or feel like your standard period drama with it's use of modern popmusic and other things are used to make everything a bit surreal and not quite normal. Death comes to visit or someone uses modern slang that pulls you out of the story, but in a good way. It adds to the carm of it. I think the episodes are strangely fun and work well in their absurdity and I hope we get more series of these episodes because I think they just have room to grow.
Merlin, s1-3: The first three series of these episodes are just really good adventure family show. It has this fairytale vibe to it, which I really enjoy. They are never trying to be more than they are, although they sometimes rush through things, but I really do appreciate how light and fun this fantasy show full of adventure and magic is considering how dark and bold some of these new fantasy shows post-GOT all feel. I miss this sort of feel-good fantasy.
The Office, s1-4: It's taking me a while to get me through this show. I do not know if it's out of all these memes I've seen and I feel like I've already seen a lot of these jokes or if that humor isn't really my thing. I like it well enough and often have it on in the background but I am not often in the mood for it. I do not think they are that funny.
Crash Landing on You: I was was not that into this one. The characters were good and I found many things interesting about this drama, but the romance and just the story itself dragged on for such a long time. The episodes were some over an hour long and it did not have enough story for that. So towards the end I was really bored.
Alice in Boarderland: This was a real roller coaster ride and the story is something I espect more from a Japanese movies than dramas (though I may not have seen enough Jdramas). The story was fast and constantly surprising you. Really good, the story was so gripping and full of twists and interesting characters. Bloody and brutal, but in a good way.
Vincenzo: Vincenzo surprised me so much, but I was not expecting this entertainment when I started it. A strange mix of soap opera level drama, comedy and legal drama that works somehow so well together. Very colorful, wacky and fun characters, one of the most entertaining bad guys I have watched in a kdrama in a long time. I was always looking forward to watching the next episode and the story never seemed to drag or drop in intensity or action throughout it's run. Could well end up being my favorite drama of the year. Pure and simple entertainment that I will not easily forget.
Sisyphus: The Myth: I need to stop torturing myself through the Park Shin Hye drama just for Park Shin Hye. This drama had a really great idea behind it and it started of pretty well, but I thought the mystery in the episodes dragged on for a long time and just wasn't that well put together or that exciting to watch. This was more romance than science fiction and I was not feeling the romance here and I found the lead male character so boring.
Age of Samurai - Battle for Japan: At first I thought it would be a drama, but it turned out to be a documentary. Really interesting history which I really immersed myself in.
The Lost Pirate Kingdom: I felt like I knew about a lot of these events that this documentary talked about through the tv show Black Sails that it might have damaged the suspense a bit. Sometimes I felt like I was getting a really detailed recap of that show. Still quite fun.
Wandavision: It was just like I expected a Marvel tv show to be. It was great fun, great action and fun characters. The episodes take advantage of a slightly slower story that TV shows offer compared to movies, but still have this Marvel feel to them. Marvel knows its audience very well.
Lost Cities with Albert Lin: I got Disney+ and enjoyed so many of the documentaries that were on there. I loved learning about all the lost, secret treasures and cultures that history has to offer, that are almost hidden from modern view.
Lost Treasures of the Maya: Albert Lin has some great series on Disney + that are really fun to watch. He's almost like the modern Indiana Jones. I devoured his shows over the course of a few days.
Drain the Oceans: So much fun learning all that's hidden on the ocean floor. I did not watch all the episodes in this series, but I went between the episodes that had more to do with ancient history and things that I'm interested about.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: It went a slightly different route and had more to say than I honestly expected from a Marvel tv show. And while it did have a rather slow start it manage to say everything they needed and wanted to say and manage to build these characters well enough so that this origins story of the new Captain America is well set up and established for the next phase of Marvel cinema. It was very fun and exciting.
Navillera: really heartfelt show that truly did tug at my heartstrings every episode. The story is really emotional and sincere without being too sad or depressing. It never drags you down, but much rather gives you a bit of hope and wholesome vibes.
Not Yet Thirty: Very short but fun stories about three friends. The pacing wasn't the best, it felt a bit rushed, and I didn't think they divided the time between these friends that well, so parts of it felt underdeveloped and boring to watch.
Shadow and Bone: a rather traditional YA fantasy story and maybe a bit lacking in depth here because there was a lot going on and it only had eight episodes to tell it all. But the characters were really fun and there was always a lot of excitement going o.. And thanks to the Crows there was always something that surprised me at every turn and it was just so fun how they wove it all together. Came out much better than I thought it would and I'm really excited for what's next.
Youth of May: I did not expect much from this drama at first, but it still surprised me how light it was, despite the Gwangju uprising being one of the topics it covered. The story got darker as time went on, but it never got too hard to watch or too sad. It was really well done and the despite how short it was compared to many other kdramas it never felt rushed or anything.
The shows I dropped:
Lovestruck in the City: The characters were just so boring, especially the male lead. And the format that the episodes were trying to have - almost like they were filming a documentary - just did not work for me.
Royal Secret Agent: I love period dramas and I find Myungsoo really cute. But there was just nothing really going on here and the story felt like it was trying to be more clever than it actually was and the characters didn't seem to be going through any type of character development. It was just kinda boring.
My Father is Strange: While cute and cozy, these types of stories aren't really my cup of tea. They just don't seem to hold my attention that well.
Beyound Evil: Might give them another chance, because even though I'm not very fond of crime and murder mysteries like this, I have heard almost nothing but praise for this drama and I'm a huge Yeo Jin Goo fan. The mystery didn't hook me that much though, but maybe I just didn't get far enough into it.
Doom at Your Service: I do not know what it is… but this kind of paranormal romance does not really work on me even though I love fantasy and I like rom-coms. I prefer ghosts and such to these immortal supernatural beings... unless it is the main female character who is supernatural and lonely. The romance of a immortal male and a human female just doesn't seem to work for me.

Deke's surviving skills are something I need lol I'd have never thought about, running to hide in the vents like that, and of course he lived such a shitty life, he'd know where to go
Also Deke's speech about how he comes from another universe is one I made several times? because if their changes affect Deke's timeline, then they never went to a destroyed world and they won't change it and re-start the paradox. If Deke dies, it's because of a fight he's in. And Jemma is once again betting her life on theories they have
Deke 'self-serving' tho... the guy literally went to die to bring the team home and save the world, instead of escaping with other humans or letting Daisy go to Enoch while he stayed with the team, and he’s been trying to give people back up and help instead of ditching them, but okay
can the show also properly acknowledge that Deke was a human enslaved and forced to grow up inside the Lighthouse, watching his loved ones get sent to die as a kid, forced to live a life in which he had to take care of himself, and had never seen the outside world, just heard some stories about the fantastic past planet and then fixing the framework so he could see a replica of it himself, but of course nothing tasted or smelled right since he never really got the chance to see the real thing, and lemons were a treasure and people almost killed each other over disgusting food tossed to them the way you give animals theirs, pouring it on the ground (food used to sterilize them to control the population), and sometimes the matrics shoved in their arms went red and you had to kill people or be killed until you were one of the left standing? it's not only traumatic, it's hell, and this man is so well-adjusted, considering, and he just wanted to see the real world but instead he chose to stay at the Lighthouse and help

some Jemma / Jemma & Fitz critical stuff:
oh god, I could have been okay with Jemma going against Daisy orders just because she believes Daisy is focusing on Coulson so she had to do something about the particle accelerator, and having a fight with Daisy, but not with the way she was at the beginning of the ep, like she's siding with Fitz, can't look at people in the eyes, and hugging herself every time she's uncomfortable - she did it when Fitz was cutting Daisy, she did it when Daisy looked at her and Fitz angrily in this episode - because it's still and always giving me the vibes of 'wife who will literally accept anything from her husband and claim that nothing is wrong, they need no help, just love, but is actually internally freaking out'
also now Fitz critical stuff after read more (and always not happy with Fitz and Jemma's relationship too), I'll try to refrain from writing more about this (but people, including me, criticize Jemma all the time, it's criticism not being anti, so I shouldn't feel so nervous saying it), and I just need to get it out of my chest, but before that I'll write one thing here:
I will never find Fitz being so hard on Deke funny, none of the scenes where he is make me smile, they just make me roll my eyes. It's why I also block the anti tag. Because I can agree with criticism against Deke, especially from Daisy, but when it comes to those scenes I just... cannot find it humorous. I found funny the 'ugh Deke' part back in the future with the whole team being done, even if I liked him it didn’t matter, it was funny to me, but the way it's playing now? not my thing.
it just makes me think that while Fitz and Jemma could always be rude to people, this is too different from how he was before, the level of it, the attitude, especially in the context of everything else he did and said recently - can you imagine Fitz being like that with Skye in s1 when in the first episodes she tried to joke around and didn't understand science, so she had several goofy moments? or with Ward, constantly, instead of trying to be nice to him too and warming up to each other? or with Hunter who is so much like Deke? and Fitz himself knows what it's like to look for a connection and get that kind of attitude, the 'you are not smart enough, good enough' especially from a parental - or grandparent - figure? so uh... no.
To me there was also never anything wrong in Fitz being much nicer before. There are plenty people who are caring and forgiving and would put aside their needs to help others while still not letting others walk over them.
I always complain about Jemma's flaws, for example how she can be hypocritical as hell, so I think it's fair that I admit what I don't like about him either, and if this is the new Fitz, I miss the old one. If I met this character now I wouldn't like him, same way I don't like Sherlock. I loved Fitz so much, the way he was, he wasn't perfect but he was amazing to me, but the character he is now? he's not one I'd be a fan of. He's NOT badly written, like Jemma who has no realistic reactions, just not my cup of tea as a character or person. (Now Jemma, if she had realistic reactions, would probably not be my fave person either, I can't know because she’s everything that other characters will need her to be depending on the scene). It's one example of how traumas can change people, but I don't have to like the way you become just because it has a good explanation.
Which is why the fight Mack and Elena had was exactly the kind of fight I have wanted for FS in s2 when Jemma was starting to unravel and be murder-y with Ward, and also a similar fight about Fitz thinking she'd be capable of hurting Daisy, and also a fight about change that was resolved, and possibly I just wanted that kind of fight and conflict and messed up emotions and 'we've been through too much and it messed you up' now in season 5 with the way Fitz has been since the Framework (but because she loves him, everything is okay?) I find unsettling that Jemma was just okay with everything he was saying, always.

Cameron’s Pilgrim
Spoiler warning S4 Halt and Catch Fire, until 4X05
I’ve read recaps and comments about Cameron’s choices , words and actions, and I would like to contrast it with my understanding of what 4x05 “Nowhere Man” revealed.
The first half of S4 we are kept much in the dark about what’s going on with Cameron. We just mostly know how it appears to Joe, Bos and Gordon. Joe thinks she’s searching for something out there, to reinvent herself. Gordon - the outdoor man who loves camping - calls it 2 giants living on a timble. Bos jokes about space bikes. Nobody takes it seriously, just like Donna didn’t take Cam seriously and thought of her as an impulsive child in S3, but it turned out that junior had married, bought a house and had worked on a better solution than credit cards even. And the reveal about Cam’s game Pilgrim in 4x05 suggests that Cam knows why she bought the land, the airstream and why she wants Joe to make love to her there. Cameron is the sole person who is not “searching”. Instead, she wants her loved ones and especially Joe to find and understand her. If Joe was the mystery man throughout the seasons, Cameron was the mystery woman.
From her conversation with Bos in S1, we know that Cameron always had communication issues, especially when it involves her feelings. It’s not something she will just grow out of. Discovering the program language Basic helped her find a language to communicate. She’s a coder and thus her language, communication and actions are coded. More, especially the S1 episode where she pitches her OS idea to Joe as wanting to make people fall in love with the machine, while holding a toy up, it becomes rapidly clear that toys and games are her tools of connection and communication. It is how she reaches out to people and reveals something about herself.
Cameron is at odds with Gordon for 2 seasons, until they start to play Nintendo together.
Bos rarely understands her games, but he tries (love that moment when he asks the coder monkeys to help him get out of the damned cave), and he knows the games she develops tend to be about her.
Donna and Cameron have a stellar working-friend relationship, but the misunderstandings begin to heap up once Donna’s chat pushes Cameron’s games out of Mutiny, until eventually Donna pushes Cameron herself out of Mutiny.
Her relationship with Tom hits off while they play a physical shooter game and work together on making a virtual/digital version of it.
The particular scene where she pitches the OS idea to Joe while holding the puppet in S1 is Cameron actually revealing that she wants to make him fall in love with her, or how she can fall in love with him.
Joe is rewarded with a passionate night with her at Comdex 90 (and unbeknownst to him at the time her heart), when he figured out the lighter game.
When viewers and her friends and lover regard her airstream as a childish game, they not only sell her short, but expect Cameron to just grow out of her communication handicap. She will always need these tools. She is not immature, or lost to herself. She is trying to show and communicate something. Her heartbreak and disappointment over nobody figuring out her message via her Pilgrim game, not even Joe, is not so much about professional failure but her failure to communicate her soul, heart and vision adequately. Cecil commenting that not even he can explain her coding work to connect his rudimentary code to her solution and it is at another level entirely emphasizes this.
Her isolation in the airstream is a physical manifestation of Cameron’s communicative isolation. But it does not mean she has stopped trying to communicate the same message she put into Pilgrim. Instead of making a “new digital game”, she uses an entirely different medium: Cameron uses material tools and physically tangible items. So, when Joe told her to move on from the Pilgrim failure and make a new game out of nothing, Cameron actually took his advice. She just did it with real world items, like a builder, which is quite unprecedented for her, way out of her comfort zone.
And she picked these new tools for Joe. He took the step in S3 to learn BASIC code, telling her that even if he might never be great at it, he is not unteachable. He loves HTTP and HTML because it’s such an elegant, simple code that almost anyone can learn and use to make something out of nothing.
Joe’s personal coding of expressing himself isn’t programming code though, but metaphors: the browser is a stadium or a doorway and HTTP is the roseta stone.
Simple, real world, physical items. He is a physical guy:
swinging bats to hit for the fences and breaking the bat when he feels betrayed by his father.
Hitting a car with a sledge hammer to turn her on and show her he’s a prime specimen in great shape
Using a low voltage live current to turn her on
Using torches to shoot for the stars and dispel a hurricane
Immolating a shipment of empty, soulless portable computers (after Gordon tried to compliment Joe that the Giant was like him)
He wins her heart with lighters
He betrays his passion, his love and need for her at Comdex 90 in a very physical way
He waits for her for years in a basement, where they used to have sex
Her message hasn’t changed. She’s very much trying to use Joe’s metaphorical language, initially in Pilgrim, because she was 5000 miles away from him, and when that fails she uses the physical world to show him those metaphors. Pilgrim and the airstream are Cameron’s mixtape for Joe.
Let us look at the evidence of my claims above, and I’ll start with Pilgrim and what Donna discovers about it:
Joe says he was once on TV as a “pilgrim” over the phone reconnection. And thus overall Joe is the intended “pilgrim” in Cameron’s game.
The pilgrim is a blue man. Joe started out at IBM, called Big Blue, and IBM men usually wore blue suits.
Donna clicks the “key” item in the menu when she starts the game. In other words, the path and the discovery is a crucial “key” to understanding the game and consequentially Cameron.
The avatar reaches an area with what looks like flames in the air. I’ve read recaps and reviews who think those orange-brown things flying in the air are broken pieces of the puzzle, but I’ve watched every previous image of the game and it has nothing to do with the puzzle. I think the things flying in the air that the avatar eventually climbs are meant to be “flames”. In other words, they are a different version of the lighters that Joe and Cameron play around with at Comdex 90 where their relationship and passion was “rekindled”.

The avatar hits some type of invisible “airstream”, taking it off balance.
The avatar must climb upwards into the sky or towards the stars where the airstream and flames were, not walk forward towards a future which is just another crappy version of the present to Cam.
There’s a flash of light and the pilgrim reappears at this empty space of light (star level). Only Joe’s arc has had a similar scene happening in S3, what I think of as a “rebirth” scene.
We see a shooting star landing on an island or continent with a 2D image of the avatar stamped on it. This is the place where the pilgrim gets to actually play the game. And it is highly likely related to the Shangri-La (magical land) concept that Joe wrote a letter about to both Gordon and Cameron. Only Gordon confirmed in S2 that he read the letter. Cam refrained to answer Joe about it. The map and land though suggests that Cameron read the letter.
Then 8 crystals or starlight emanating shards appear (”jewels”). Each acts as a “doorway” to a partition of the island/continent, and immediately transports (like Star Trek) the avatar into that piece of the map. Cameron called the airstream a “jewel” to sweep Joe off his feet into a magical land.
The doorway that Donna chose to transport with landed her in the SW of the island, and a Japanese winter garden with a shrine in the middle of Tokyo (you can see dark skyscrapers in the background), emanating warm welcoming light and surrounding torches. The only person Cameron mentioned a shrine in a spiritual sense to was Joe.
Cameron herself says it’s not just a game you play, but a game you live.
All evidence points to the pilgrim meant to be Joe, rather than Cameron. The island and continent represents Cameron herself. Unlike what some reviewers claim, Cameron doesn’t need to be put together or fixed, since the continent is whole already. What she needs and desires is for her pilgrim to explore her completely. And her comment about the game being something you live suggests the game is meant to represent life or a lifetime exploration. In a romantic sense Pilgrim is Cam’s proposal to Joe, not unlike Gordon’s decoder engagement ring for Donna.
There is the addition that even if the pilgrim misses the clue to climb the flames, but instead stays on ground zero, getting himself distracted by picking up treasures and completing puzzles, he gets transported back to the beginning, to try again and find the airstream of flames. Cameron drops that hint to Joe when he calls her up about the game. If this is about Joe, as I claim it is, then Cameron is trying to say she’ll wait for him until he figures it out. She’s not going anyplace else.
At an instinctual level, Joe does get that the game Pilgrim is a means of connection between them. He plays it and calls her up when he gets sent back to the “start”. And when she mentions how beautiful the moon is in San Jose, Joe looks at the Pilgrim avatar on his screen and decides to spend the night with her in San Jose. He understood the indirect invitation then.
But nobody gets the game and it gets pulled from publication. Cam says dejected that even Joe doesn’t like her game, while he reassures her he hasn’t finished the game yet. As he then also advises her to “move on” and keep making other games, she retreats to be by herself. If of course, the game represents the lifetime she imagines for herself with Joe, he unwittingly disappoints her by mentioning “finishing the game” and “moving on”. What we have here thematically is “lost in translation”, which is of course a book and movie set in Japan. Joe assumes things about her and the game that are erroneous, including the belief she forgot and stopped caring about them while making this game, as he claims during his camping with Gordon in the season opener. Notice how that tent is beautifully lit in the darkness like a beacon in that camping scene, and just a material iteration of the warmly lit shrine in the Japanese garden in Pilgrim in 4x05.
After playing “doom” and Gordon telling her that the purpose of the game “is not to get killed”, she returns and “unpacks” by throwing her Japanese past with Tom in the bins, doing what Joe asked her to do, but in her own way. And after that she buys the bike, messes around with hardware, rides around the country. Gordon and Bos later make the link to it being a materialization of the “space bike”. Space Bike was a game about Cameron’s values and talents: she can make herself big or small, befitting the environment (proportion), sense of humor, sense of self, decency and the latter leads to common sense. But the bad-ass chick on the Space Bike is homeless and unbound, forever traveling from one planet to the next, only requiring drinks and a shower. Instead of doing it virtually, Cameron now tries to materialize this.
While she rides her Space Bike she discovers a plot of beautiful land with a sign that says “If you lived here you’d be home now”. And come on, it’s a very beautiful piece of land in that discovery shot, has a fairytale or magical quality to it. And the sign has three key words: live, home, and now (instead of the future). Whatever she eventually would end up building there for a house, it has the ideal potential to be whatever Joe and Cam could want it to be. Think of the scene between Joe and Ryan in S3 in the basement of Macmillan Utility where Joe intends to set up the local network connected to NSFNET. So, she buys the land, but instead of hiring an architect and immediately get contractors to build something on it, she pretty much leaves it in its ideal state of a blank slate full of potential. Is that wrong? Of course not. She shouldn’t be deciding what the permanent form ought to be by herself. Joe should be part of its creation, so that their mutual vision can be part of the walls and lay-out. On top of that, even if Joe has asked her to move in with him, she’s still not officially divorced and they haven’t discussed the form of their relationship, nor said “I love you.”
It’s actually surprising a little that Joe doesn’t totally get that or hates it out there. He did hike up to the Observatory in Texas once via scenic route at the end of S1 a decade before that, walking into Sarah’s life. He’s a stargazer, right? And yet at the start of S4 he can’t see the moon from his home, blocked by a hill. Also, with that wool sweater and her long auburn hair in this phase of S4, Cam reminds somewhat of Sarah.
Anyway, instead of building a house all by herself on the plot, Cam buys the airstream. To the owner who sells it to her, with Joe standing right there, Cam explains it’s a temporary solution, before something “permanent” can be “built” there. We are introduced to the onthologist in the same episode who stipulates how one word can have different meanings, using “bark” as an example. The word “airstream” can be an airstream trailer, but it is also a change in the air caused by heat as it does in the game Pilgrim. Cam reveals she used to play in the airstream with her friend in her youth, and Joe asks her what she’d play in it then. “Airstream,” she answers. Here is Cam’s second hint to Joe how he can play the Pilgrim game. Oh, and she calls it “perfect”, which was the word of understanding between Joe and Ryan.
As they try the bed out, Joe asks her why she wants him to consider the AOL money. And she replies it would give him more time spend time with her, mentions “human touch”. He asks her whether the long trailer means she’s moving out, to which she immediately replies, “No,” and clarifies, “She’s trying to buy this jewel to sweep him away to a magical land”. This is her third game hint: the jewels, sweeping him into the air, and a magical land.
She takes the trailer out there, builds a hearth and puts up some lights in the air that have the form of “flames”. This is Cam’s 4th hint. Watch her face of disappointment when neither Bos, Gordon or Joe take much notice of it.
These are not just all hints. They are her material recreation of Pilgrim. And here follows the clue that Pilgrim was created for Joe and her fantasy of the two of them while stuck, isolated in a doomed marriage at the other side of the world: she’s all happy when Joe promises he wouldn’t want to miss out on his first night with her in that honeymoon bed, but she is near to tears when Joe fell asleep on her.
Instead of Joe actually visiting the airstream to find her and be with her there, even if just for a night and make love to her there, we’ve seen two other character seek her out at the airstream: Bos and Tom. Bos goes out there to help her out with her plumbing and tells her he’s proud of her getting out of her comfort zone. She discovers his compass, and he reveals his money trouble, and she is the sole person who helps him out, on the condition it’s a one-time gift. Tom goes out there to get the divorce papers signed, gifts her the solution to the noise mystery in their apartment back in Japan and she apologizes to him for the pain she put him through and says her goodbye to him.
So, Joe… Why is he blind and tonedeaf to what she’s actually trying to do out there in her “space trailer”. Basically he’s doing the same thing the Japanese did with their shrine – rebuilding the original process.
Team up with Gordon and bring Cameron into the business
Connect with Cameron in the basement, which in the past was the first location both in the bar and at Cardiff where they had their first sexual encounters. It’s where he waits for her for 4 years. The basement at Westgroup is also where he had the time-sharing idea, to then team-up with Gordon and eventually have a “hands-on” business relationship with Mutiny and Cameron. The number of first downloads of the bugged browser “loadstar” is after all 69, which is a quite famous number for sexual position.

We as viewers can empathize with Joe trying to recreate the environment and circumstances that brought them together originally as well as how frustrating it is for him to have Cameron refuse to step into business with him, while she shares his bed. Joe Macmillan isn’t the manipulative cutthroat anymore that he was in S1 and so he naturally believes that if he works with Cameron this time, now that they have reconnected, they could pull it off. His work is his life and he wants and hopes to include Cameron in that. He tangibly looks forward to working with her again, since the S3 finale. She’s his muse after all.
But she steadfastly refuses this, and Joe clearly doesn’t know what to do with it. For a big part that is because this is how he goes about it with anyone he connects with and can be himself, by working with them – Simon, Gordon, Cameron, Haley. He even tries that angle with Joanie. It’s so fundamental to him to have a working relationship with the people he admires or tries to include, that he expresses how clueless he is where his relationship with Cam is going to Gordon, in a subtextual manner in 4x05. He asked her to help him with Comet, she refused and fled to the airstream, he smashes the wok, goes all S1 Joe on Gordon the next day until Gordon orders him to take a fresh breath of air. Then when he comes back with a newly bought wok (while Cam is opening a box with a wok she bought too), Gordon mentions that Cam is on the phone line. Joe says he doesn’t even know which problem he’s trying to solve. How he was in the basement for 3 years (aka waiting for Cam to choose him over Tom and come back into his life), he finally has his arms around “it” (Cam again), but now he can’t see it anymore. As Gordon asks Joe whether they’re talking about the future here again, Joe says he should call Cam again. Gordon then asks him about whether Joe saw this (Comet) ten years ago in Gordon’s garage. To which Joe explains it was not about where it would end up, but knowing the feeling of working together. He could envision how it would feel to work with Gordon, and we can infer how Joe envisioned that working with Cam would turn him on completely. He does not know what it would be like to share a life with Cam without working together. That is why he says he has been beyond patient with her. He’s been waiting for her to show up at Comet one day and agree to be part of the team, and to prove to her she can trust him as a business partner.
Meanwhile he’s also insecure and unsure about Tom. His gut always told him to never regard Tom as a true rival to the intensity that Joe and Cam had even when separated in S2, nor in S3. Where Joe is a grown man, Tom looks like a kid, and conservative to boot too. He very much regarded Tom as Cam’s mistake like he mistakenly sought a replacement in Sarah, and the night at Comdex 90 and the www project would make her see “the light”. But it didn’t turn out as he expected it would. Cam did the decent thing – stick to the marriage - with the man he believes is wrong for her. We can see how afraid he is of what she wants to tell him that is so urgent she asked him to pull over the car, when she reveals she saw Tom that day. Joe sags his head and closes his eyes. It’s as if he fears that Tom and her reconciled. After all, Cam stuck with Tom outwardly in the way Sarah didn’t stick with Joe. The “facts” seem to prove to Joe that his gut was wrong about it all.
Basically, Joe is afraid to lose her and too afraid to upset her or have an actual fight with her. And when that first fight occurred, he doesn’t know what will come next.
But none of the facts are what they seem. It turns out that his gut about Cameron’s feelings for him trumping those for Tom was correct. It turns out that she waited for Tom to leave her voluntarily, that she loves Joe, and thus that she wanted to be with him since 90 as much as he wanted her to be with him. If he was miserable in the basement, she was miserable in an apartment in Tokyo, handcuffed by guilt to a husband (which is what the Stephen King book Geralds’s Game is a horror version parallel to) she wanted to leave, while denying happiness to herself. (incidentally Gerald’s Game has a “space cowboy” in it, but he’s a necrophiliac serial killer).
This sort of unhappiness though has its impact in the present, just in a different way than assumed. She’s not unhappy that Tom left her, has another woman or having a baby. But what is important to recognize is that Cameron basically denied herself almost completely for the last 4 years, and adapted herself to fit the needs and wants of Tom. Anyone who stayed too long in an unhappy match, denying their own wants and needs, will recognize that once free from such a relationship, one is bound to be very reluctant to move into what looks like a complete life of a new partner: Joe’s home, Joe’s work, Joe’s friends, Joe’s colleagues, Joe’s business partners. It doesn’t matter that Joe allows her to be who she is, endeavors to stimulate to do the things she loves or does not oppose her from doing her own thing even if he’s not a fan of it. She needs her own turf, see the people that Joe might regard as business rivals. It’s not enough for him to make room for her into his established life, and quite unhealthy for her to fit and mold herself to his.
It should be “their life”, and that is why it’s so important that he too needs to let go of his own comfort zone and try to immerse himself into this nowhere plot of land and airstream, and try to imagine what they could built together out there with “steel and concrete and building blocks”. I don’t think her intent is to fit and lock him into the airstream, but to “play airstream” where they can brainstorm and fantasize what type of life they want to build together, while she “plays house” in his apartment simultaneously. And if he does that, she might even surprise him how much she’s willing to compromise.
When he asked her over breakfast in 4x02 whether she knows what she wants, she looks up and stares at “him”. When he tells her over the phone he wants to know her in his life, she makes a little silent fist of victory. And by 4x05 she tells him she loves him.
So, unlike others, I disagree that Cam should just quit her “games”, “grow up” and “move in” with Joe. Joe should not move into the trailer, but he should “play” and discover her there.
ETA: I’m not saying that Cam and Joe shouldn’t compromize. The “airstream” does not represent a permanent home, not even for Cam. What I’m saying is that a) Joe makes the error to regard it as Joe’s home vs trailer b) while Cam herself regards it as Joe’s home AND trailer to build a foundation and discover together what their life together might be like. She does live in his home too. Even people who know each other intimately, the worst and the best, for a decade, but wanting or hoping to establish a lifelong commitment for the first time after all that time, still need game-room to play around with ideas. 3x09, 4x02 phonecall and breakfast were perhaps their first three proper dates.

I belatedly discovered this webseries, and it resurrected (see what I did there?) my love for Wednesday and how the Addams Family canon runs on the endless possibilities of this loving, happily eccentric family being 100% true to themselves and the world just having to deal with it. The show was everything I never knew I wanted till I watched it, the perfect blend of Addams-macabre and cozy slice of life with bonus Wednesday navigating the world alone, without always knowing her family will back her up, and it made me crave more of adult Wednesday’s mini adventures in LA. For this canon, I’m good with gen or, if you want to write that, more of Wednesday’s adventures in dating guys who really aren’t up to the challenge, and you can absolutely have Wednesday interact with OCs I haven’t listed as part of a pairing. I’m keeping the prompts pretty short, just to (hopefully) pique your creativity, as I expect I will love any way you make these or any similar scenarios play out:
-Wednesday goes to IKEA
-More of Wednesday’s interactions with the nice interns at her receptionist job. Maybe they invite her out to happy hour, or to the beach or a club. Or maybe we get to eavesdrop while they shoot the breeze on their lunch break, possibly over barbecue-chicken pizza from CPK.
-More of Wednesday’s gigs. She already babysits and walks other people’s dogs, what else might she do for extra cash that would be both really common and seemingly ill-suited to Wednesday, except she totally makes it work for her? Cat sitting (especially if the cat belongs to someone incredibly rich whose house is full of secrets – and expensive things for the cat to knock over), driving an Uber/Lyft, becoming an AirBnB host, catering/server, working the late shift in a New Age/occult supply store where none of the woo is real…?
-Or, alternately, Wednesday finds a career that is perfect for her, in which she can have success and respect. What ever could that be and still fit into the non-Addams world?
-Wednesday tries speed dating
-Or, she runs into Brian a.k.a. chains guy (I cackle with glee every time I rewatch the bit when he tries to kiss her at the pet store) a third time – how does it not go quite as he wanted or expected this time?
-Wednesday’s family comes out to sunny, plastic, image-conscious LA to visit her and make sure she’s doing alright. She gives them a tour of the city, and LA will never be the same again.
-Wednesday takes an evening class, or goes back to school part time, or enrolls in an online degree program
-Wednesday takes a road trip, alone or with her apartment mates/colleagues/Brian/strangers she met for carpooling purposes. Bonus points if you work in real roadside attractions, or tourist traps, or famous sites/landscapes.
-It’s Dia de Muertos, and Wednesday goes out to celebrate and soak up the atmosphere. It may or may not live up to her expectations.

Laura Moon/Mad Sweeney
I ship it. Yes I do. They had me at “gimme-my-coin-dead-wife”-flicks-him-into-wall. The snarky road trip was the best thing I never knew I wanted until it happened, and I adored every second of it, not to mention the upped shippiness in S2. They’re both such assholes and so fascinating, even if they start to mellow toward each other a bit, and all the gods/magic/resurrection stuff swirling around them begs to be explored further. Also I love love love how their dynamic is about equal parts spikiness, pathos, and humor (they’re funny! and the canon doesn’t shy away from putting them in ludicrous situations), and it weaves seamlessly between those three. Plus she’s half his size yet can and does beat him up with literally one finger, and then there’s the angst of he having killed her, feeling really guilty about it, and then bringing her back. And the way that their New Orleans adventure makes clear they have feelings for each other (S1 was more one-sided SweeneyàLaura) but neither wants to admit it. And and and… yeah, I just love them.
My prompts are a combo of prompts I had after I binged S1 and others I added throughout S2. Even if some of this is addressed or hinted at in canon, feel free to diverge – canon divergences and canon-adjacent stories are my jam!
Please give me either missing scenes from the road trip (if you can work in a divergence, that’s great - for example, I like Salim, but if you want to have him boot Sweeney and Laura to the curb and go off on his own, or Sweeney to boost his taxi before Salim catches them, or whatever else to have those two alone, go for it!), or a divergence from either season (instead of going to Ostara, they go where? to see whom? about getting Laura resurrected. Or things go down differently in New Orleans, or Cairo, or anywhere else) or something about these two post-canon.
-Laura discovers (how? you decide!) that Sweeney gave her back the coin after their accident – whatever happens next, some punching may be involved. (If nothing else, Mama-Ji mentions that the coin is now in Laura’s heart, and we saw Sweeney place it on her ribcage after the accident, whereas it was originally in her gut like she’d swallowed it. Laura might ask herself how the hell it moved.)
-Wednesday’s big war finally comes, and “don’t you dare die on me [again], you asshole” is a line either Sweeney or Laura (or both) might say to each other.
-Laura asked “What does Wednesday have to lose?” and the answer is…? (Yes, give me that sweet poetic justice. One possibility, though not remotely the only one, but as of S2E3 Laura is technically a god-killer...) Or later when she straight-up says she’s going to kill Wednesday, but is warned to bring power with her when she does, how does that work? How else might she damage Wednesday or ruin his plans, just in case she can’t actually kill him?
-At the end of S2, Laura hoists Sweeney’s dead body over her shoulders and strides off, seemingly leaving Cairo, Shadow, and all of it behind. Tell me what happens then – does she use Baron Samedi’s potion to bring him back, and whose is the blood filled with love she uses (does she still bleed? You could get creative here, worldbuilding is also my jam)? Does her/his coin play a part – and how come the coin still “powers” Laura despite Sweeney’s death? Does she bring him back another way, maybe figuring out how to keep herself around and be able to give Sweeney back his coin? Does he come back like she did, more undead than alive, or does his godhead, however depleted, help with that? That still leaves Laura to be fully resurrected too… Or does something completely out of left field happen – surprise me!
-Possible divergences from “Treasure of the Sun”: Sweeney manages to kill Wednesday, and then Laura rolls up, and then…? Or Laura rolls up and makes like Mama-Ji told her – destroys some motherfuckers? Or Sweeney gets killed temporarily but Laura brings him back, or brings herself back, or does something else with the Baron’s potion, and is Sweeney’s blood the one filled with love, or can we interpret voodoo spells in a non-literal way? Or what happens with Gungnir hidden in Sweeney’s hoard? And definitely how do they deal with each other once they meet up in Cairo, given how they parted in New Orleans (I don’t know what hurt more to watch: Laura deflecting at the diner, or Sweeney rambling drunkenly about her when Shadow finds him, or later on telling Shadow with such desperate sincerity to keep her away from Wednesday)?
-Or how about a wild divergence from the last several episodes? Sweeney and Laura manage to settle their differences (ahem, more fucking, on this plane of reality, might help) and don’t part ways before leaving NOLA. Or they roll up in Cairo separately but at the same time, and confront Wednesday together, and neither of them die (or die more, in her case). Or they’re there together when the police nearly raid the house. Or they have Wednesday (the ultimate cause of Laura’s death) and Ibis (a death deity) and Bilquis (a love/death/life deity) on hand, surely they can concoct some kind of resurrection thingamajig for Laura, and if they have to twist some divine arms then so be it. Or or or…?
-Wednesday told that luckless cop that Sweeney had been against the big gods’ war from the start, and while Wednesday lies, what if Sweeney decided much sooner to say to hell with Grimnir and his war and his having Sweeney kill random people? I’m guessing Sweeney too drank three glasses of mead so he can’t back out without dire consequence – but he does have a fierce, dead woman in his corner.
-They go to some as-yet-unnamed old god (feel free to bring in whatever mythology you want) in order to bring Laura back to life. Between Sweeney’s mouth and temper, and Laura’s mouth and temper, it doesn’t go well. Now one or both of them are in big magical trouble with a pissed-off deity and have to get themselves/each other out of it.
-Speaking of other deities, I really enjoyed their brief canon interactions with Ostara, Anansi, and Mama-Ji, and I’d like to see more of that, especially Ostara’s polite yet over-it attitude, Anansi very obvious over-it attitude and his dramatic flair, or Mama-Ji being one of the few capable of giving Laura pause.
-All the petty, ridiculous ways in which Sweeney’s bad luck manifests itself make me laugh (can’t help it, won’t even try), and I’m down for more variations on that theme.
-Sweeney and Laura fighting together, like they did on Mr. Town’s train of torture. Whether it’s a bar fight of their own making, or the big gods’ war they find themselves embroiled in, or something else entirely.
-Things happen and Laura finds herself in the position to throw Sweeney under the bus but also help/save him, and while he knows it’s only karma (he did kill her way back when), he can still be pissed off about it – how do they navigate this?
-Related to that, the Baron said: “In death is her true love, but she betrays him also.” If that meant Sweeney, or can mean Sweeney in the future (I don’t like destiny-wills-it stories, and they’re definitely not there yet, but they could maybe get there at some future point, and even then It Would Be Complicated), was the betrayal Laura rejecting him after the loa ‘fuck them,’ or is it something that hasn’t happened yet, and if so, what?
-Laura gets fully alive again, but traces of her (un)dead state remain – what are they, how does she cope, what price did she/he/they have to pay for her resurrection, and how does their relationship change? I’d especially be curious how it would work if they’re already a sorta-maybe-item and then she’s alive again and it’s weird in a new way.
-For reasons I’ll leave up to you, Sweeney and Laura have to stay put in a single place for a while and end up essentially cohabiting, regardless of what their relationship is at that point. Take “cohabiting” as literally or as creatively as you want – in any case, I’m sure it will be marvelously disastrous and amazing. If the place they have to stay happens to be NOLA, all the better, I find everything about that city fascinating. Or, if you wanted to use book canon, Laura and Sweeney (rather than Shadow) are the ones who have to spend time living in Lakeside and deal with its creepy Norman Rockwell-ness and with Hinzelmann.
-Slight or major AU from the opening of “The Ways of the Dead”: Laura has hitchhiked with Sweeney instead of going off in a huff with Wednesday, or she otherwise gets to New Orleans sooner, and she and Sweeney tear up the town together. Gimme bar fights, carnival shenanigans, all the food and drink porn, backstage craziness with the Christian rock band (Sweeney seems to have a backstage pass on a lanyard around his neck when Laura finds him)… Maybe they even cross the paths of some loa and it doesn’t get all angsty (for what it’s worth, I think the reason the sex magic didn’t bring Laura back to life was because she couldn’t accept the truth(s) revealed during the astral-plane sex and just ask Sweeney to prick his finger for the potion – instead she defaults straight to “this is all Wednesday’s evil plan” the morning after – not because the loa fucked them over). They were actually getting along nicely in those first couple of scenes in NOLA, only ribbing each other a little while still being their grouchy selves, before they got to Le Coq Noir. I wouldn’t have minded seeing some more of that.
-AU from the end of “The Ways of the Dead”: they still have their big fight (which was amazing as well as painful) or some variation thereof, but they don’t split up. (Maybe the reason is as mundane as Sweeney refusing to get left behind or they have a shared ride out of town, or maybe the more time passes the less Sweeney can afford to be far from his coin – or maybe the coin needs him close by to work at full capacity.) And then what?
-All the old gods hide their true appearance to an extent. A situation arises in which Laura sees Sweeney’s true, or at least old, self (I’m thinking of his surprise!poignant monologue about when he used to be a king, and him in full Celtic warrior mode in the S2 flashbacks). Or Wednesday’s war ends in victory, meaning the old gods again get belief, worship, and sacrifices. How does Laura, the ultimate skeptic even when she’s on the other side of the mirror, react? How does this new knowledge and new reality change her opinion of/attitude to Sweeney? Or to flip that around, if Sweeney were again relevant and believed-in, would that actually change his bad attitude and fix his issues (my guess is it would be complicated)? On that note, Sweeney’s decline from Lugh to king to leprechaun was more sketched in than really explored in canon, ditto I didn’t really get why he couldn’t seem to remember his own history except in snatches (the curse that made him a bird/madman of the woods?) – I’d love to see more about it and his (not) dealing with it, or with a reversal of that decline. Eorann told him long ago to adapt and change with the times – but what does that mean after humpteen centuries in a rut and becoming used to always feeling angry and unappreciated?
-The power of names, since they never use each other’s in canon: for all his “dead wifeing,” there comes a time when Sweeney (has to) call her by her actual name, and that’s a tricky moment for them to navigate. Or, Mad Sweeney is not his actual name, and true names have great magical power and so must be kept secret; Laura discovers or learns his name, from someone else or from himself; what does she do with that knowledge? Or, Sweeney gets to say “cunt” in a situation (sexual or otherwise) where, not only does Laura not peel his lips from his gums, but she finds that she can’t object, even though she knows that he knows that he’s getting away with it.
-So far in canon, it’s pretty clear that Sweeney has a lot of complicated but sincere feelings for Laura. Laura is still pretty focused on Shadow (or rather her idealized vision of Shadow and what their relationship might yet be), whom she seems to equate with her own lost-maybe-to-be-regained life, although that’s starting to change at the end of S2. For one thing, she’s starting to soften toward Sweeney as she realizes he’s doing things for her that are not all about getting his coin back (and her sparring match with Wednesday in “Muninn” as well as Shadow refusing to be called puppy anymore in “Moon Shadow” may finally force her to accept that her relationship with Shadow died alongside her and Robbie on that road in Indiana). Not to mention the shared truth revealed in “The Ways of the Dead” (bullshit was that just Laura’s truth!) and how Laura flips out rather than deal with it and Sweeney can’t spit out that it mattered to him either, or how obviously cut up she is about Sweeney’s death despite refusing to admit it. Tell me the story of how Laura stumbles her way to feeling – and acknowledging that she feels – more complex, maybe kinder or softer, really annoying for her blunt-force-trauma-personality things about Sweeney and about the notion that her dynamic with him is different from the way she tended to use men for her convenience without really letting them in in the past. Also I’m pretty sure that even if they can admit they feel the same – or sorta in the same ballpark – about each other, their relationship would still run on a lot of conflict, and I would so be here for it.
-On that note: in “Munnin” it also becomes clear that Laura has, without realizing it herself, started to rely on Sweeney. The “I trusted you” line made me think, whoa she’s too furious to catch herself doing it but this is huge for Laura, and the fact that she goes off with Wednesday (!) basically because she’s mad at Sweeney because she thinks he’s prioritizing his debt to Wednesday over her… Yeah, I would like to see that explored some more and/or to see Laura and Sweeney get to a point where they trust each other and rely on each other, and know it and accept it, however difficult the getting there and being there may be for them.
-Sweeney has this intense need to see himself as a brave person and someone worthy of the world’s respect – but his past and his long experience as just a leprechaun have chipped away at that. Add the guilt of having been the instrument of Laura’s death and then all the pesky feelings he develops for her, and it’s a lot. Obviously his final actions in S2 are his trying to reclaim that courage and nobility of old (also to spite Wednesday, who’s messed both him and Laura up), but I would love to read about his character development under different circumstances, where Laura is there all the way, as opposed to them parting ways and meeting up again multiple times like in canon.
-And since I’m on the subject of Laura, you know how she’s not actually an abrasive bitch all the time to everyone? And when she is, the people on the receiving end of it sometimes richly deserve it, or very occasionally they push back (ILU, Mama-Ji!), and anyway it’s refreshing to see a female character who defaults to confrontational and doesn’t bother flirting and accommodating others for the sake of social harmony? As much as I enjoy watching her rip into people (ahem, Sweeney), I also love it when she acts differently, like her genuine interest in getting to know Salim and her joy in seeing him again in S2, or her running passive-aggressive battle of wills with Wednesday. Her beginning to feel sympathy for Sweeney and her anger and disappointment when she feels let down by him are a part of that, and I’d love to see all that explored more. Nuance! Give me all the nuance and seeming contradictions in both Laura and Sweeney’s characters!
-Sweeney and Laura get drunk and wake up married. Or some sex and/or blood resurrection spell results in basically an unbreakable marriage bond, whether it also secures resurrection or not. Or marrying the dead keeps them (sorta) alive. Or being married makes it possible for them to share magical/supernatural abilities. They’re both pissed about it, but secretly having to make it work may not be the worst thing that’s ever happened...
-My perfect AG spinoff would basically be Sweeney and Laura tooling around America, looking to get her resurrected (whether they succeed or not is up to you), stealing ever more ridiculous vehicles, arguing/fighting and having those pesky moments where vulnerability and genuineness creep in – and fucking. So yessiree I’d be down for porn, including “it’s technically necrophilia/zombiesex” porn, including a canon-divergent first time, or their second time, or all the later times after they had their first time in NOLA in canon.
-If you wanted to throw in some worldbuilding, maybe something exploring living death. Magical bargains. What kind of favor did Sweeney do for Ostara that would be worth her bringing someone back to life as repayment? What other powers might Sweeney have – or have left from when he was Lugh? How long can a dead wife keep going before she’s “soup”? What other superhuman abilities might dead!Laura have? Can the dead do magic? What even are the rules governing and the limits of different beings’ magical abilities? For example, why can’t Sweeney just take his coin back, or why does Laura gain super-strength as part of her undead package deal? Is the hoard in the same space as the behind-the-scenes accessed through the merry-go-round, or it’s a different place? Why does the coin seem to start to “run down” the longer Laura has it? Why did Wednesday need Laura to kill Argus when he killed Vulcan himself just fine? What happens with Gungnir now it’s in the hoard – can only Sweeney get to it, has it been transformed somehow (it’s now the treasure of the sun), etc.?
If it helps your inspiration, you can find some of my meta and lots of tag-burbling about these two here. I have read the book though I remember it only in bits and pieces, and while I prefer the show characters and the fact that they get thrown together, you can use or riff on book material if you want, though I’d prefer a story that isn’t just a retread of the book. With reference to one of my DNWs, for this canon, describing Laura’s physical decay is totally fine. Also, Shadow/Laura don’t interest me except as a part of Laura’s backstory (so if your story wants to include Laura figuring out or having already figured out that pinning all her hopes on Shadow to make everything right is unrealistic, unfair, and not how it works – by all means, go for it!), and Shadow/Sweeney interest me not at all.
Canon-specific DNWs: Sweeney dying/staying dead (at least not permanently), Laura being treated as just a part of Sweeney’s story, and Laura being Essie’s reincarnation/descendant/reincarnation of Sweeney’s wife from back when he was a king in old Ireland. Reincarnation/“new love looks like old love”/“lost love found again” plots bore me, and I don’t enjoy ships that hinge on characters being somehow destined to be together. Characters having agency is my jam as much as canon divergences are. Anyway I’m certain that Laura would have neither time nor patience for the notion that Destiny Fate and All That Jazz threw her together with ginger minge, and even if it were technically true, she’d still want this relationship to work on her terms – and Sweeney obviously has a problem with Laura’s cheating, her relationship with Shadow, her personality (though he also recognizes they’re alike in many ways), and all that maps onto his anger and sadness over becoming irrelevant over time, so it’s not just about Laura. So yeah, let them be their own (grumpy, spiky, dysfunctional) people, and let Laura’s dynamic with Sweeney not be shaped solely by his past and his issues.

I fell so hard for this show. So hard! The beautiful production values, the wonderful cast, how the characters develop, how the show slowly but surely unfolds one reveal after another and packs so much into two short seasons, all the period detail, the genuinely tense action scenes, the moments of humor and intense emotion, the intertwining of political intrigue and zomg! really scary zombies, how the zombie outbreak works on multiple levels both literal and metaphorical…
I love the brave, kindhearted, but sheltered prince, whose whole life has been so privileged yet shadowed by the possibility of death if he loses his position as heir, learning what it means to actually rule and lead people, to protect them and be protected by them in turn. And I love Seo-bi the fearless, dedicated, selfless physician, who notices things and figures things out regardless of whether this annoys the people in power. I ship them, but I also love their platonic interactions, how instantly and fiercely loyal she is to him (not just because he’s the crown prince, but because she’s seen how brave and altruistic he can be) and how he immediately takes her advice and experience seriously despite her being a woman and a commoner in this super-hierarchical setting. So I’m good with either / or & for this pairing, and you can work with any of my prompts accordingly. In a / fic, I’d even be good with a totally sublimated, “they both must kinda know what’s going on between them but for reasons of both their personalities and their respective genders and social positions, nothing overt ever gets said or done” scenario! So don’t stress too much over which flavor of dynamic you write for them.
Also, I love most of the cast (not a huge fan of Chancellor Cho, but he is an effective antagonist), and would be delighted to see any of them in fic too. Especially the loyal and funny and badass Mu-yeong (he was loyal, despite the Haewon Cho clan’s blackmail, and if you want to diverge from canon so he lives, I would not mind that at all), the even more badass and wounded and snarky Yeong-sin (or is that “Yeong-sin”???), Chang’s sparky, exiled uncle several times removed, and the terrifying and frankly unhinged young queen are my favorites. I even have a soft spot for that mostly-useless coward Cho Beom-pal, but really, they’re all great and I would love reading about them too, or just about the prince and the lady physician – whatever works!
Finally, before I get to prompts, I know a bit about the Joseon period, but we’re talking the bits and pieces I remember from a college class, and what I’ve read on Wikipedia and picked up from this and other Korean movies and shows. I know a bit more about some of the cultural background, like the Confucian values, the social stratification and feudal system, the gender segregation among the aristocracy, the wars with Japan, but again – my knowledge is limited. So if you want to teach me stuff about Joseon, go for it! If you want to invent or handwave stuff, as long as it fits the canon’s mood and broad cultural parameters, go for it! And if you want to treat me to some worldbuilding, period detail of any kind, and/or costume porn, definitely go for it.
Prompts:
Zombie fighting anything! Learning to survive in a society that’s rapidly breaking down, having to transcend their habitual social roles and challenging each other, anything! Maybe one of them teaches the other to hunt, or to make herbal medicines, or to fight with a sword, or heck, to cook or clean dirty clothes. (FYI I wrote most of these prompts before I was quite done with S2, and the time-skip took me totally by surprise. So while my prompts ignore Chang renouncing the throne, I’d also be down for the untold adventures of the former prince and his traveling companions, as Chang learns how to be just regular folks and they pursue clues about the resurrection flower, or for your take on what happens in S3. Use whatever works for you in my prompts in any way you want!)
Figuring out how the zombie infection continues to evolve and/or working together to find a cure beyond dunking the infected in water – whether that means to destroy large numbers of the undead, or to develop an antidote, or to cure and bring back those afflicted. One plot detail that really struck me: more experimenting with zombies, like Chancellor Cho started to do, might also hold the key to a cure?
Political intrigue anything! Having to fight zombies and/or factions at court with both friends and unexpected allies (not gonna lie, I would have loved to have seen the young queen unleashed on some zombies, even if that did not make her the prince and Seo-bi’s ally).
More road trip/survival/battle goodness – maybe Seo-bi offers Lee Chang some advice while they’re navigating their new situation, or she witnesses him developing his leadership muscles, and it brings them closer together than before. Or maybe a moment of humor, relaxation, or quiet affection on the road or in between zombie-slaying, especially if it catches them both a bit by surprise. Or one of them gets a non-zombifying injury (nothing too gruesome or life-threatening, please!) and the other one has to care for them – extra points if Seo-bi is injured and the prince kind of bumbles through the most basic things so she has to talk him through her own treatment. Or nightmares/being triggered by something, like we saw both Chang and Seo-bi react at the sounds of zombies growling and people screaming in S2E5.
We have seen Seo-bi insist on staying loyal to the prince, and Lee Chang rely on her repeatedly to the exclusion of all his other people – give me a situation in which he has to make clear his own loyalty to her, as a part of both his becoming a better leader and as a step in advancing their relationship. Or, there comes a time when Seo-bi really pushes against the rules of what someone like she can and cannot say or do to/around a crown prince – we’ve seen Chang refuse to stand on his dignity to the point where so many of his interactions with commoners would end in the commoners’ death, but I imagine even he has his limits, and that kind of clash can only drive this dynamic forward!
Canon divergence in which Seo-bi gets sent to the capital and assigned to be the personal physician to the petulant, frustrated prince we meet at the start of the show (handwave the gender segregation and impropriety). She knows her place, but she also does not suffer fools or male nonsense. Sparks fly, social conventions get tested, zombies may or may not happen, and a new mutual understanding is born.
Canon divergence from the scene in S2E2 when Seo-bi finagles her way to being allowed to see the prince and he instructs her to resurrect Ahn Hyeon – what if instead of that, they came up with another plan of escape? Or maybe Chang sending Seo-bi to spy on the queen goes a different way than in canon? And really, anything that requires those two to pass secret messages while grabbing each other’s hands and staring intently into each other’s eyes is A++ with me!
One theme which emerges gradually, and I really loved, is people having to compromise their principles to survive and ensure the safety of those they feel loyal and/or obliged to: Ahn Hyeon agreeing to turn the sick villagers into zombies, dear Mu-yeong having been a spy but also protecting the prince all along, Seo-bi resurrecting Ahn Hyeon, Lee Chang instructing her to do it as well as his thousand-yard-stare after having to finish off what’s left of his father… I’d love to see more such compromises, how their consequences ripple out, and the emotional fallout.
In addition to zombies, other magical and/or supernatural events and creatures start to appear in Joseon. If you want to bring in something from Buddhist mythology or Korean folklore, please do, and any and all worldbuilding would be awesome.
Post-canon something in which Lee Chang is king, possibly of only a part of the country (maybe a zombie-free enclave, or a part he won in a civil war against the Cho clan or a cadet branch of his family), and Seo-bi is there as his advisor, physician, and unofficial chancellor. Gimme policymaking to deal with the lingering zombie issue, and assassination plots, and servants/guards/ladies in waiting gossiping like it’s their real job, and all the palace intrigue!
Kind of related to the previous: even as a “spare” prince, Lee Chang can’t marry a commoner. Would he ever think to offer Seo-bi to become his concubine? I don’t think she’d go for it, and he might realize it, but maybe I’m wrong! Or maybe being intensely platonic at each other is as good as it gets for them, and they’re kind of okay with that. Or they get married in secret and have to very careful not to let slip anything by word on gesture in public, or not to let Seo-bi get pregnant. Or, y’know, one day or night on the road or in a fortified town, in between scavenging for supplies and fighting zombies, they decide to bone just because their lives are weird enough now to forget about propriety and all that jazz for an hour. (For this canon, I’m DNWing smut, please keep it M rated at most.)
Role reversal: Seo-bi is the sheltered, willful princess fearful for her position (especially since she’s a woman as well as the daughter of a concubine only) and Lee Chang is the proper yet willful provincial physician. Do they meet as in canon, or under different circumstances (maybe she must flee the court to escape assassins, accusations of treason, or an arranged marriage, with or without bonus zombies)? How would their dynamic be complicated (and made awesome of course!) by the gender reversal? Also, burning question: does Princess Seo-bi already know how to fight (because she forced Mu-yeong to teach her back at court, of course), or does she have to learn once zombies/brigands/insurrection/whatever happen? And does Physician Lee Chang know one end of a musket or sword from another, or does he need rescuing at some point?
I realize that some of these prompts could work as well (better?) as a no-zombies AU, and that’s fine if you want to take it in that direction. Just so we’re clear. :-)
Starred Up (2013 movie)
Oliver Baumer, Eric Love
Yes I do ship it, I do, I do!
Ahem. Don’t get me wrong, I liked what the movie did with the father-son relationship and its influence on both men’s character development – but I really wish they hadn’t got Oliver out of the action before the story’s climax (not like that!). The final denouement with Love father and Love son was great, as was the hint at the end that Eric learned something in anger-management group and has a support network that will help him a lot. But. I would have wanted to see more of the intriguing dynamic between Eric the intelligent, semi-feral, yet not-incorrigible, young thug and Oliver the educated, dedicated, kind yet aware of his own potential for violence (what was he on about with “I need to be here”?), slightly older counselor. They had me at Oliver’s “I want him” and Eric later telling his father that Oliver’s a better man than Love Sr. Also the not-flirting and the push-pull in the scene when Oliver picks up Eric from his cell - yowza!
Prompts:
-I would love to see Oliver return to holding his group in prison, so the two of them can interact more, either in the movie’s immediate aftermath or years down the line, as it’s implied that Eric will be serving a long sentence. Give me more scenes from anger management or the ribald, honest, free-flowing conversations in group, either with the other men present (I liked Hassan and Tyrone especially, among the group members) or a one-on-one session.
-An oblique or open-but-undramatic admission/declaration that they both know there’s something there, even if they don’t know what to do with it. Or, one or both of them knows exactly what to do with it, and the push-pull that would result from that.
-Dirty talk: used for arousal, as a defense mechanism, as a form of flirtation. Eric using slurs to assert dominance, and Oliver not letting him hide behind profanity, when he can use colorful language to express emotion and/or sexual interest. There could definitely be some verbal taunting/flirting about who wants/is eager to do what or is good at doing something. There may be some sniping comments about logistics and (lack of) condoms and barebacking and what men get up to in prison. There probably wouldn’t be deep discussions about sexual identity.
-An emergency in the prison requires a lock-down, so Oliver gets temporarily stuck in Eric’s cell or another room with only Eric for company. Things get porny and/or emotional.
-Eric is eventually released (you can handwave this so it happens soon after the movie or have it happen years later) and crashes with Oliver while he adjusts to the outside world. You guessed it: things get porny and/or emotional.
-How do they get to the point where both can cross that line from friends/whatever the hell they are and become, to lovers? (There’s Eric’s personal history and general discomfort with vulnerability, plus all the ways prison sex can be or make things complicated, and if it helps, I headcanon Oliver as either gay or bi and at least somewhat closeted, at work especially.) Who initiates and “directs traffic”? How does their always-contentious dynamic shift during and after sex? Is the sex an isolated (series of) occasion(s), or a progression/escalation over multiple encounters (how would I love especially an escalating series of encounters, let me count the ways)? Eric might seem like the logical initiator and/or dominant partner as well as using the possibility of sex to manipulate and exert control, but then Oliver might (or might not!) surprise him and is definitely the one more in touch with himself as well as aware of his custodial duty toward the men in the group.
-At some point in their intimate relationship (probably not right at the start, and probably not in prison, though if you can make it happen in prison, more power to you!), Oliver decides he’s going to take his sweet time and make Eric fall absolutely apart with pleasure, while using dirty talk to both arouse and empower Eric to own his desires – by that point, Eric is in a place where he can let that happen and enjoy it, even if he still talks tough.
-Role reversal: Oliver as the con (jittery, shut off, sticking out like a sore thumb in prison with all his fancy learning, yet no pushover) and Eric as the newbie counselor (kid from the wrong side of the tracks made good? Youthful hoodlum turned around his life, now trying to help others via tough love and lots of swearing and maybe a bit of manipulation when called for?)
BTW, for this canon my blanket DNW for dubcon does not apply! If it calls to you, I’d prefer if it ends with everyone getting just what they want -- say, one person needs to be dubconned into what they secretly want but can’t admit, rather than one person getting off just as they wanted and the other one feeling used or cheated.

I love pre-canon, canon, post-canon, canon-divergent, and missing-scene stories. I love character-driven and plot-driven stories equally, and I love fics which mix humor and angst/serious business when appropriate for the canon.
I love stories about characters at work and play, group dynamics, family dynamics (including constructed families), professional partnerships, friendships, alliances, rivalries, intimate couples (new lovers/first times as well as long-term/established couples), UST-ridden couples who are not just UST-ridden but connected in other ways too, etc.
I love irony, snark, humor as well as angst arising from the characters rather than the plot crowbaring it in, linear, non-linear, and 5+1 stories, hopeful endings, happy endings, bittersweet endings, worldbuilding, spiky characters who keep their jagged edges and spikiness in adversity as well as when their lives are going well, square-peg-in-round-hole characters, characters who are their own worst enemies as well as those who can get over themselves when the occasion calls for it, characters with conflicting values which may or may not be reconciled/resolved, characters who treat each other with respect and as equals even if they hate/annoy/can’t stand/love to dislike each other.
I especially love workplace stories (this can mean anything from an actual workplace/casefic/procedural setting to anything that revolves around the canon world in which the characters live) in which the characters are competent and dedicated to the job, and while they may not be exactly friends and they may well irritate one another, they still manage to rub along to get the job done and maybe even grow to care about one another (much to their surprise and sometimes reluctance/discomfort). Or, if they can’t get along, show me why not and what’s preventing them from finding common ground.
In terms of ship dynamics, I love (where it fits the characters) banter, competitiveness or antagonism shading into attraction (this tension need not be resolved), oh-god-why-did-it-have-to-be-you-what-did-I-do-to-deserve-this, bickering yet loving couples, characters who are serious about their romantic interests, characters who think they are much better at flirtation than they actually are, characters forced to work together only to prove much more compatible than they initially assumed, fics which mix an exploration of characters’ professional and everyday lives with shipping. A dynamic I cannot resist is shipping a couple who are incompatible in some important way (they are ideological enemies, cop and criminal, spies from opposite sides, one betrayed the other or they betrayed each other), and while they love and want each other they’re also not willing to change sides or surrender/compromise their identity for the other’s benefit, and how they might (or not) make their relationship work anyway.
I don’t have any very specific likes for smut, other than smut fitting the characters – show me how their canon dynamics spill over into the bedroom (or other place of congress). I also like sexual scenarios that subvert expectations a little and surprise the characters themselves (e.g., the person who’s usually quiet or more passive taking charge, the more aggressive person goes with it possibly snarking or commenting on it as long as they can). And I like sexual scenarios that contain an element of competition, antagonism, oh-god-this-is-a-bad-idea-but-we’re-going-for-it-hammer-and-tongs, not wanting to admit feelings or show vulnerability except oops it happens anyway, whether the characters acknowledge it or not, or just people getting way more into it or being more affected by it than they thought they would. When it fits the characters and their canon dynamic, you also can’t go wrong with we-both-wanted-this-for-forever-and-now-we-both-know-it-so-here-we-go-diving-in-headfirst. For het and/or slash, oral, vaginal, anal incl. pegging, manual (ifyouknowwhatImean) – it’s all good. You can go as veiled or as explicit as you like, but please avoid excessive medical jargon – I don’t find a lot of mention of “penis” or “clit” sexy.

to say this is my favourite, most precious & treasured piece of fiction would be an understatement!! i give all my heart to hyouka’s themes (finding your identity & place in the world, relating & empathizing with others, following your passion etc etc i could go on) which were told beautifully through a wonderful core cast of 4 characters! the depth and flaws and emotional weaknesses of hyouka’s main cast is Too Much For Me To Bear and i love them in any and all permutations and just WANT TO READ ABOUT THEM ALL THE TIME!! also i’ve written satomaya to the moon & back but let me tell you... i would still read satomaya content any day ehehe. BUT i am very intrigued by satoshi & chitanda’s r/s which hasn’t been written much about in the fandom yet so maybe??? HMM!!

this anime is a good example of me loving the small moments and characters so much more than the overarching plot! i liked s1 more than s2 because of the development of kumiko and reina alongside each other, but i loved the spin s2 gave on kumiko & asuna’s r/s! while this anime isn’t a top fav of mine, the r/s between the ladies in this show is SO GOOD!!! would love to see what you can do with it!

3. Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun
i am so so fond of this anime and its gags! while the character dynamics are incredibly fun to watch, they also feel very ‘predictable’, not only because of the running jokes but cause their r/s never seem to advance that much. so i would absolutely LOVE if you threw me fic about the most unlikely pairs that don’t interact so much in canon and hence have less running jokes, i would love to see what pans out, and the fic needn’t even be romantic!!

Flint and/or Madi eventually locate Silver and find him alive and happy? dead and sad? half alive/half dead and thoroughly screwed up?
Silverflint/Silverflintmadi Flint and the Maroons are defeated on the beach and Hornigold and the British make it through to the village (season 3, episode 10). Silver is captured whilst Madi retreats to the underground shelter to keep the villagers hidden. Hornigold proceeds to torture Silver to discover the location of the cache and to avenge Dufresne's death. Can Flint and the remnants of his forces mount a counterattack and save Silver? Can Madi sneak out of her hiding place and rescue him? Or is Silver doomed to die at the hands of a very angry, silver-haired grandpa?
Silverflint Flint, Dooley and Joji are unable to rescue Silver at the wrecks (season 4. episode 3) and see him carted off to Nassau by the Redcoats. Rogers takes out all his frustrations on Silver during some rather brutal interrogations, and attempts to humiliate him and his cause by mocking the street for fearing/following a tiny, one-legged nobody. Somehow, Flint manages to rescue Silver before Rogers hangs him. Don't ask me how. I have no idea. But I have Great Faith in Flint.
