The Law According to Lidia Poët / tv show review.
Tumblr media
This is just my opinions on the first season of The Law According to Lidia Poët. Pretty much spoiler free!
Although I have many foreign period dramas on my netflix list that are not just kdramas or from the UK, and in general I want to watch more foreign content, I rarely get around to do it. But a six-episode Italian period drama sounded so exciting to me, a fun and quick watch, that I couldn't resist. And I'm glad I took the plunge.
The Law According to Lidia Poët is a lively and fun period drama that anyone who loves a good mystery and just period pieces in general with gorgeous, but not necessarily period-accurate, costumes and fun characters.
A remarkable amount of story, as well as character development, is stuffed into these six episodes. The progress of the story is fast, but there seems to be still good enough moments for the story to stop and breathe and linger on the important moments. There is good family and personal drama within the narrative, and overall the whole Poët family is very interesting to watch. It never feels rushed or anything.
Each episodes follows a 'case of the week' so to speak, just as many older mystery shows did. The cases are fun, but have not that much to do with the progress of the story itself, or have a huge impact on each other. They are actually there for the characters to have something to do and let us get to know Lidia's methods for solving these mysteries and learn about her as a character.
But still, at the same time, I feel like each case is trying to highlight a little bit of the social and political issues that the story is dealing with; the status of women and the unrest in Italy at that time, although there is never really an exact year set for this series or explicitly stated within the narrative. Or if it was I didn't notice it.
Lidia herself is that determined young girl you expect from period drama like this. A female protagonists that usually doesn't fit the mold of traditional women but more unruly as to (often, but not all the time) appeal to a modern audience. But it works well here. The real Lidia Poët was a trailblazer after all and ready to fight against an unfair system. So it doesn't come across as inauthentic, or too girlbossy, in this series, as it does in some other period dramas. Lidia is a sharp and witty character who manages to be more than some archetype.
In fact, I think that most of the characters in the show are characters that you might expect from such shows, without falling into any archetype per say. There is a good dynamic amongst all the characters, especially Lidia's family, and there is a lot of heart going on, and the actors and the script manage to breathe good life into all these characters. I hope we see them again in the next series, because as the story came to a close, I still wanted to see more of all of them.

The Flight Attendant (2020-present)
A show that slowly crept up on me, the Flight Attendant might have some pacing issues in the first episodes, but once it finds its feet it became one of my favorite watches this year. 4/5 stars. More in the link.

Had to sort some crazy tech issues early on, but worked everything out. I talk about my soap and art business, some rad charities, an update to my Buster Keaton book, some upcoming projects, give a recommendation for the TNT series Animal Kingdom, and talk about the tv/movie review series I'll be starting next month.

I think it would be a good idea
If movie/ tv show reviews included a list of questions they googled while/after watching. Like, we were watching Will Trent this week and, off the top of my head, I googled:
What is Gullah Geechee culture?
What is a boo hag?
Does [Will Trent actor] speak Spanish?
Idk i think it would enhance reviews if they came with a 'let-me-google-that-for-you' of common questions viewers had. Non-spoilery, of course.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Season 5. Final Season.
Thoughts (in a list):
Mae exited as quickly as she entered
I finally notice that Astrid, Midge’s sister-in-law, is Willa from Succession
Frank from Succession also makes an appearance
This season felt rushed and unprepared, but last season felt slow and aimless so....
I'm wary on the score I should give it...on one hand: it was a great season for what limited time they had; on the other hand: there are so many things brought up or introduced that are not fleshed out:
Susie’s college lover?;
Lenny Bruce?;
Rose's "business"?;
Abe's revelation about his sexism?;
MAEEEE?;
Midge's kids as adults?;
The gangsters that Susie had a problem with many seasons ago are suddenly NOT just there for comedy chops? (oh are we supposed to take them seriously again?)...shit like that
I did really like Zelda’s new husband, Janusz, saying that this family is a bunch of morons who can’t take care of themselves. Midge is no better. On one hand, she can’t understand or pick up what Zelda is telling her about the book she created with instructions for them to follow about the house, and on the other hand, she FULLY understands and is annoyed that her in-laws, Shirley and Moishe, are unable to pick up that SHE is a writer on a talk show and SHE got them tickets for that talk show. She’s willfully ignorant one minute, then can’t comprehend how someone else can have that same ignorance the next minute. It’s just not funny, it’s sad, and a little pathetic.
**Watched from 5/16 - 6/1, two full sittings I believe. No Score...or between 3.5 and 4.5, I guess.

Avatar: the Last Airbender / tv show review.
Tumblr media
This is a pretty much spoiler free review of the first season of Avatar the Last Airbender on Netflix.
I knew as I was going into this series that not every storyline from the original animation was going to be included in the new netflix adaptation and the plot would be at risk of stretches itself too thin, there would be some cramming and mixing of plot points to move the story along in only eight episodes. But it certainly felt a bit painted by numbers and without too much care. Sort of like they had a list they needed to check off some plot-boxes and didn't really care how they did it.
This netflix adaptation does manage to look cool and be action packet (even if the actions that was used for the bending didn't really seems to be very distinct between nations), which is truly what people seem to want out of fantasy tv these days. But any action doesn’t hit as hard without the quiet moments where we build on the characters and let the plot slowly breathe and build. Because in order for the action to have stakes you need to make the audience care for the characters. And therefor Avatar the last Airbender fails a bit with it's very well choreographed action, because so much of it felt rushed.
A good majority of the character’s backstories was shown way too early and then the show having a bunch of characters like Fire Lord and Azula have scenes way to early and it ruins the suspense and fails to make the story build up to something in the end. I can understand that with a lot of the fat trimmed of the now very bare-bone plot they needed that focus to the story, but the mystery behind that 'big bad fire lord' is no longer there and I think it's because the people who made the show didn't trust the audience to get it without showing it to us.
You can tell how little the show actually trust its audience with the way the show very badly infodumps the backstory and the lore onto you and the sheer amount of tell but not show storytelling of the main characters. The characters talk endlessly about things that plague them as characters, how they can't be kids and have fun or the pressure of becoming a leader at a young age, the responsibility they have and the consequences of the war but for all the talk about it we rarely get to see it in action. It's like they don't have the time or the trust in the audience to making the characters too flawed and then go on a journey to change. Because they need to get from a to c and tick all those other plot boxes in x amount of time.
There is a sprinkle fun bits here and there that will undoubtedly excite the original fan of the story because you loved those moments the original animated series. The cast is doing an admirable job and manage to make Avatar: The Last Airbender into a fine, if somewhat mindless TV spectacle. The series never destroys the original story, but there is little there that is a refreshing new approach to the story. It's easy to get the impression that the people behind the scenes only saw the fun action and a story that is still popular on the Internet but did not understand the essence of Avatar: the Last Airbender.
I'm still very surprised how Sozin's comet won't have as much significance in the story in this show, not only because it was such a crucial part of the story in the animated series but because we see the firenation destroy the airnomads and therfor becoming the lords of that universe because of that comet and from such from a narrative point of view, it would be an ideal opportunity to build up to that storyline and go full circle. Letting the power of the comets be what will ultimately cripple the firenation in the end.
But many producers and media executives know nothing about how to tell a story or have much media literacy and just see "Game of Thrones was a hit... because it was gory, full of action and people like to see characters die unexpectedly in a brutal ways" and not because Martin worked hard to buildup the characters and their flaws and make sure that the complex characters made mistakes that they then had to deal with (which the show did well in the first three seasons) and mistakes that often lead to their deaths instead of the plot saving them because they are the main character.
Avatar the Last Airbender is an action-packed little fantasy show that seems to be able to be some surface level fun and an introduction to new audience to the this fantasy universe. You can certainly have fun with it, marvel at the costumes and the CGI and it has its good moments and enjoyable callbacks to the original source material to keep you going all the way to the end. But it lacks care and heart and the warmth of the original that came with its very strong character arcs and fun adventures that this adaptation let's fall on the sidelines for some action and rushed plotting.
