before meeting you, he was for sure reckless. but after the two of you got involved with each other, he promised himself he’d be a lil more careful for you

everyone knows riding a motorcycle is dangerous as fuck, so he never wanted to have you worried

sometimes there’s night where he may go a lil too fast & ends up getting chased by police..

he texts you & tells you to have the garage open so he can just come in & have you close it immediately.. trust, you end up reprimanding him

he always takes you on rides when the sun is setting. idc, he tells you it reminds him of you

does wheelies just to scare you

one day you ask him to teach you how to ride & he says “last i checked, you’re already good at that”

you were left confused until it hit you.. “that is NOT what i meant!”

whenever he gets hit on, he mentions you with so much quickness

if a girl does happen to ask for his number, he gives them yours 😭😭😭 they don’t even know until they text you

if he ever gets injured, the first person he goes to is you, even if he feels that you can’t help. you’re his sense of comfort

like boy could lose a whole leg nd he’d prob call you first to let you know LMAO

his friends hate you bc they say you made him “soft” but you disagree completely!!!

you fear for your life half the time you're his backpack

he speeds through the smallest little cracks between vehicles on the freeway

he uses anything as a ramp & you hate it

when he's making sharp turns he touches the fucken ground with his hand "look how close we are!"

whenever you're in your car & he's on his bike, he always gaps you nd you think it's so mean. yet, he laughs every time

sometimes when he picks you up, he makes sure to make the most noise ever. that's mainly how you can tell he's arrived

i feel like his wardrobe is all black. the only color he has are the clothes you buy for him bc you tease him for being too emo

you also buy him a pikachu skin for his helmet as a joke, but he ends up loving it

he plays deftones on his rides, that or cigs after sex idc.. maybe even sign crushes motorist.. i feel like he's always in his feelings LMAO

whenever you guys are stopped next to a bus or a big semi truck, he always touches it

records pop vids & sends them to you..

i honestly don't know what kind of car ken would drive..

but whatever car ken drives, he puts WORK into.

you love being around whenever he's working on his cars tho, he'll be all dirty with oils nd shit but its so rawr

ken gets excited over new car parts too

one time you bought him a carbon fiber front bumper and he damn near cried over it

he put starry lights on the roof of the inside of his car to give you something pretty to look at

he lets you keep your little essentials in his glove department or his arm rest

you leave a scrunchie around his gear shift & glosses in his cup holder, plus lil makeup wipes in the lil side compartment on the door

i fear ken has road rage.. he hates slow drivers and flips people off so fucken often

not only that but this man never goes the speed limit???

his car is all blacked out.. so flying down dark highways with his headlights off is his fav thing to do

he hates when you opt out for driving your car.. especially when there's other cars being loud nd making noise. he feels left out, like a puppy taken from its owner

This piece went through at least 3 major revisions but I'm glad to have seen it through! I wanted to expand on the world of the piece "Chasing the Apocalypse" with a full rewind to the very start of the story, with the main character "Ax'L Turbski" lining up for his first race. Giving him a last second rundown of the course is former Fenrite miner Darryl Bedrock (much to his sister Anne's [who can be found running across the street in the back] displeasure of getting involved with this stuff).

I wanted the setting to be about 10 or so years after the end of this huge 20 year galactic conflict where everyone's expanding back out across the stars, and the story takes place on the most popular of the former frontier planets, Vakmerő. technology wise they have advanced past the "Space 80's" and are into the late 90s, roughly 1997 ish. With everyone expanding to new planets they need fuel-efficient ways of getting around wherever they settle down, and as such tit's given birth to an automotive renaissance, and this coupled with the rapid expansion of the size of Vakmerő's port city, Túl, has led to a growing illegal street racing racket being run by the city's growing gangs, who fight over who the city "belongs to".

There's more to this that I'd love to expand on with future illustrations but in the here and now please enjoy!

Who/What i started the year with

I watched both seasons of scream queens, i also watched the movie 'men' together with my (now) ex and that shit traumatized me- And most importantly: I watched Heathers for the first time. I knew about the musical for a while, but i didn't know that there was an original movie haha

Who/What i spent the year with

In 2023 i listened to Ghost A LOT. They were in my top artists for my spotify wrapped and theres just a few songs that i can't let go of, for example 'Square Hammer'. Something i got obsessed with too was WWE, more specifically Rhea Ripley! I love her so much and i really need her to riptide me. I wont elaborate further. My best friend got me into Call of Duty, my favorite character must be either Ghost or Price! And i dont suck as much at playing it as i thought i would <3

Who/What i ended the year with

As every year again, i rewatch the twilight saga, but i put eclipse here because thats when Jasper looked the best. Edward this, Jacob that. I say JASPER!!!! Anyways, quite recently i got obsessed with formula one. My moms ex partner used to watch it all the time and i was familiar with names like Vettel, Hamilton and Bottas, but i never really got into it. (Probably also because i was a horse obsessed child and din't want to hear anything that isnt horse related.) Now, with my fascination for Formula one, my interest in cars started growing too. I've always liked motorbikes and cars, but the "friends" i grew up with thought it was lame so i shut up about it. My insta feed is full of Miatas, i love them so much <3

Why Americans Stopped Buying Convertibles

We’ve Traded the Open-air Dream For Climate-Controlled Isolation.

A year after I graduated college, I decided to buy a car. I’d been driving a hand-me-down Hyundai sedan, but I wanted something more reliable for the miles I racked up driving around sprawling Dallas for my job as a reporter.

At first, I narrowed my search to the Mazda 6 — at least it was more fun than a Corolla. But as I saved a few options online, hoping for something in dark green, I said to hell with all that. I could buy a convertible for roughly the same price.

A couple weeks later, a dealer showed me a 2004 Ford Mustang, white with a cream-colored canvas top. He pressed a switch on the center console, and down went the top for my test drive. I’d never ridden in a convertible before. On back roads twisting through farmland, it felt like the sky had been lowered from the atmosphere, settling just a few feet above me, close enough to touch the clouds.

I bought the Mustang and drove it back into the city with the top down. Over the next couple years, I drove it like that as often as I could: on cool nights with the heat turned on and windows rolled up, on a summer road trip nearly all the way through Kansas until the sunburn became unbearable.

I never got sick of the convertible. It turned everyday monotony into an adventure, replaced the rigid confinement of sedans and SUVs with freedom and openness. Who wouldn’t want one?

But the year I bought my Mustang, in 2010, US convertible sales were down to ~140K, less than half of what they’d been just a few years earlier. That was during the Great Recession, near the auto industry’s nadir. Still, the decline has continued.

According to S&P Global Mobility, new retail registrations of convertibles totaled ~70K in the 12 months between March 2023 and February 2024, comprising ~0.6% of all vehicle sales. That’s down from ~2% in the mid-2000s.

2023 sales of the Mustang convertible, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, were down ~87% compared to 2001. Its rival, the Chevrolet Camaro, has been discontinued.

Convertibles are an endangered species, along with the American ethos they exemplified. When Carvana polled Americans on their dream cars last year, the most coveted was an SUV. The characteristic they sought most in their dream car wasn’t emotional attachment — it was technology.

We’re losing the messy, hair-flowing-in-the-wind version of the American Dream to something climate-controlled and closed off to the world. And we might never get it back.

The Car That ‘Satisfies A Youthful Ambition’

Growing up in the ’90s, I rode countless, boring miles in the passenger seats of my dad’s Toyota Camry sedan and mom’s Plymouth Voyager minivan.

I pined for a more exotic ride just out of my reach. My next-door neighbor had an old European convertible — a midlife crisis purchase if there ever were one — and I remember the college-aged woman across the street pulling into her family’s driveway (and looking far cooler) in a Mazda Miata.

This yearning went back generations, to the time automakers, after painstakingly working to enclose early model cars with roofs, realized they could spark people’s imaginations (and extract more from their wallets) by offering a topless experience.

Costing anywhere from $2K to $5K in the 1930s, roughly 2x-4x the average family income at the time, convertibles made by Duesenberg, Rolls-Royce, and Packard became status symbols for the prosperous few who could afford them.

“It is possible to follow the careers of stars through their motor cars,” noted a reporter in 1938. “When he or she first reaches the dizzy heights of movie fame, flash, gaudy cars are in order.”

Clark Gable owned a Packard convertible, and actor Wayne Morris preferred a topless ride in his Lincoln Zephyr “in any type of weather.” Marlene Dietrich was chauffeured in a tan Rolls-Royce convertible.

“No doubt,” wrote the reporter, “the gaudy car… satisfies a youthful ambition — and all of us have had it.”

The less starry got to fulfill their desires when Chevy, Lincoln, and Buick introduced roomy, space-aged convertibles in the ’50s and ’60s. My grandparents bought a 1962 seafoam-green Impala.

In 1964, Ford released the Mustang, the brainchild of famed auto developer and executive Lee Iacocca. Priced at ~$2.3K, or about one-third of the median family income, the Mustang was a magnet for middle-class Americans who wanted to inject adventure into their daily lives. It also helped bring annual convertible sales to ~500K in the mid-’60s, around 5% of total vehicle sales in America.

Safety concerns and a weak economy put a kibosh on convertible dreams in the ’70s. Cadillac claimed its ’76 Eldorado would be the last convertible ever designed, and total convertible sales fell to ~43K in 1982. But Iacocca reignited the flame with the release of the Chrysler LeBaron that year, ushering in the expanding convertible landscape I grew up with.

The Hustle

My dream car back then was a Dodge Viper, but I saw more practical convertibles everywhere in the ’90s, the peak era for manufacturers to turn the simplest of car models into adventure machines, equipped with rollover bars or fortified support pillars for safety.

The Pontiac Sunfire, Toyota Paseo, Chevrolet Cavalier, Mercury Capri, Honda Civic del Sol, Ford Probe, and Geo Metro (which could’ve lost to a riding lawn mower in a drag race) all had convertible versions.

Annual convertible sales Climbed to ~170K in the mid-’90s. They increased to ~315K in 2004, about 2% of the entire vehicle market, as automakers perfected the retractable hard top (and, somehow, convinced Americans to buy PT Cruiser convertibles).

Yet, as I failed to save for a Toyota Celica convertible by my 16th birthday — my realistic vision of a gaudy purchase — a tectonic market shift was underway. You could see it reflected in choices made from the Heartland to Hollywood.

After Good Will Hunting catapulted Matt Damon and Ben Affleck onto the A-list, for instance, they splurged on cars just like Gable, Morris, and other young stars before them.

Except they bought Jeep Grand Cherokees. “The really dope new truck at the time,” Affleck later explained to IMDB.

The SUV Loophole

Back in the late ’70s, the legal distinction that helped precipitate the decline of convertibles (and cars in general) seemed insignificant. A loophole the size of a needle eye.

In response to the oil crisis and a burgeoning environmental movement, federal regulations went into effect in 1978 requiring automakers’ passenger car fleets to meet a fuel standard of 18 miles per gallon. But “passenger cars” meant sedans, station wagons, coupes, and convertibles.

It didn’t apply to “light trucks” such as minivans, pickups, and SUVs, the latter two of which were mostly used by farmers, contractors, and laborers who needed the extra space for hauling material. To avoid placing an economic burden on workers, light-truck fleets were subjected to lower standards. While automakers had to shrink cars to hit the fuel standard, light trucks remained spacious.

So began an emphasis on SUVs and trucks (and minivans, at least until an association with soccer moms doomed them). SUV sales increased from ~112K in 1981 to ~800K in 1987.

Most Americans still didn’t need to haul anything, but they were hooked. In 1987, a J.D. Power and Associates survey even found SUV owners felt a sense of adventure while driving them — similar to a convertible.

For automakers, the economics checked out.

“You can sell a Cadillac for a lot more than a Chevy even though the Cadillac only costs marginally more to produce than a Chevy. The same thing goes for those truck-based SUVs because they’re sold as rugged,” says David Lucsko, an Auburn University professor who researches automotive history. “You can sell them at a premium and rake in the profits.”

The Hustle

Later, brands popularized the crossover utility vehicle, giving consumers the space of an SUV with a smoother ride. Crossovers, despite being built on the same frame as a car, are typically classified as light trucks. The takeover was complete: Light trucks outsold cars for the first time in 2002. Their sales now comprise nearly 80% of the vehicle market.

No Cars Means No Convertibles

That shift has filled the roads with increasingly large vehicles, which is hardly an ideal environment for convertibles. But Drew Dorian, managing editor for Car and Driver, says he’s doubtful safety fears have driven their decline, noting that safety-concerned families would be unlikely to buy convertibles anyway.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has found that, while SUVs have lower driver fatality rates than the average vehicle, convertibles aren’t any less safe than enclosed sedans or coupes.

Speaking of sedans and coupes: Many brands don’t even make them anymore. The only Ford car that hasn’t been discontinued in North America, for instance, is the Mustang. No more Taurus or Focus or Fusion. That’s been really bad for convertibles, which are typically derived from cars.

To develop all those ’90s convertibles, automakers just tweaked the design of popular sedans at a low cost. Now, according to Tom Libby, associate director of industry analysis and loyalty solutions at S&P Global Mobility, cars aren’t popular enough to justify turning into convertibles.

“To propose a convertible now, it’s almost impossible to create a proposal that includes a volume that’s big enough to make money,” he says.

The Hustle

Money is also in short supply. Car companies are investing huge sums in the transition to electric vehicles, Libby says, and sales of EVs slowed last year, complicating the calculus of how to emphasize true EVs vs. hybrids.

Just as the purchase of a convertible requires a feeling of relative financial security and a sense of boldness, so does the act of designing one. And right now most automakers lack both.

Opting For Open Air

As with movies and clothing, trends rarely die in the auto industry. They go into hibernation until one successful experiment draws copycats and the trend becomes inescapable.

Just as the success of Iacocca’s Chrysler LeBaron led other brands to turn popular car models into convertibles in the ’80s and ’90s, Libby can imagine brands developing SUV convertibles as they seek niches for consumers demanding greater variation.

This makes sense: There’s increased time for adventure as millennials delay having kids or don’t have them at all. While summers may be excruciatingly hot, especially in the Sunbelt, the other seasons are warmer than ever. And Gen Zers crave experiences.

“The enjoyment of open air,” Libby says, “I don’t think that’s gone away.”

“But based on what happened to Nissan a few years ago,” he adds, “I don’t think [SUV convertibles are] imminent.”

He’s referring to Nissan’s crossover Murano convertible, which failed to gain traction in the 2010s. Land Rover’s Evoque was also swiftly discontinued. Americans spoke with their wallets: They didn’t want the open air.

When I’m driving on temperate days, I rarely even see other drivers with their windows down. That might not be a coincidence. Lucsko, the car historian at Auburn, says automakers now design vehicles for consumers to seal themselves in.

“I think the car has become more and more a cocoon where we go to be isolated from the world,” he says.

Driving a convertible means being exposed to the world. It means embracing the elements and putting yourself out there, an ever-harder proposition in our increasingly curated, digital lives.

My own convertible era ended years ago. I had to ditch my Mustang for a move to hilly, snowbound central Pennsylvania. But I haven’t ditched my ambition for the open air, and I hope Americans haven’t either. Whether it’s a classic droptop or a futuristic roofless SUV, it will always feel good to say to hell with all that and buy a convertible.

the day started like any other; lisene headed in to work early to finish a commissioned piece. after nearly completing it the night before, she was eager to get it done. so, lisene's spent all morning in her office - despite the shrill thump, thump, thump of her sewing machine and the radio beside her playing the greatest hits, her mind wanders to her husband: is he still sleeping? and then, i wonder what he's up to... just as she's thinking of him, the intro to love shack plays over the radio. if it hadn't felt like a not - so - subtle ode, lisene would've found it hysterical! she finishes with her work quickly before inevitably whipping out her motorola razr, sending a series of texts: mon beau ↷ outgoing txt ( 11:17am ): takeout & a movie? mon beau ↷ outgoing txt ( 11:18am ): i've got titanic on tape! mon beau ↷ outgoing txt ( 11:21am ): leaving the store 2 pick up takeout in like.... 10? mon beau ↷ outgoing txt ( 11:42am ): home safe w the goods - could u pls grab wine? i forgot ! </3 c u soon..? Living in my world of hands-off and break even

I would like to have someone manage my fleet and break even. That’s all I want. Money in = Money out.

I want someone to make my game and I want to eventually get my money back on that. Money in = Money out.

Then I could have creations and assets and still have my money back.

Reality is that these projects are scary, and I dont want them to fail.

I know that I should just not do anything. Relax and live my life. But I want t o CREATE. I think source draws me toward this. But I know that I need to fucking relax. Maximum relax.

I want my car collection. I want my therapy. I want my games created, because the ideas are so much fun and excitement!

I want to have the LC, the crosscabriolet, the TRD Camry, Mazda 3 Turbo, the miata. I want developers.

I want it all. I;m gonna have it all. I’ll make it work.

Well above it ll, the poogo is making money bery soon. Imagine. xviz. mingeek. Big huge fucking names like this. The hub. Holy shit. imagine the revenue. I could become a multimillionaire, like tens of millions of dollars. Easy.

And on top of that, my money is coming in. Already at like 8000 usd this month and its the 22nd. my money just keeps raining in. I feel brilliant and abundant. I feel like Im; doing less than ever and getting paid more than ever. Its brilliant. Its wonderful. I love it. I’m on track to gigantic wealth. its great. and my fav part is the interest money i get from it. if i had 100k, if be making 2500 a year or 208 a month just from that. Wouldnt that be nice? my fave kind of money. real passive. true passive.

anyway, big things coming up. i can basically have anything that I want. and I can ultra relax. Thats what I want most. I want great treatments and relaxation.

That money draws so CLOSE NOW.I can almost feel it. Its so much moey. I dont know if I will live all that different. But I think the possbilities will be fantastic.

Weekly Writing Report - July 29, 2022

Wait. An actual report? Mostly on time? With progress? What is this madness?

Fanfic

Clare Apologizes to Miria. I think I’ve come as far as I can editing the outline and making sure it’s internally consistent. I’m sure other things will arise when I start the narrative, but I’ve been avoiding it long enough. It’s time to start the narrative. Rereading the outline, I don’t hate it though. And, like Clare, my respect and admiration for Miria has grown as a result. Though I’m pretty sure Clare already respected, admired, and outright loved Miria a lot. Putting Clare in a position of, “Oh hey, I’m in charge now! Shit…” has a way of making one see things they couldn’t before. Next week’s goal is to have the narrative started. Let’s start simple. The goal by next week is the first 1,000 words.

Clare and Miata Meet. Word Count as of 3 PM Pacific: 35,434. Words written since last update: 2,069. This week I’ve managed to wrap up some scenes or write the beginnings of scenes that had endings. I still need to write some major scenes in between, but the ending sequence is actually taking shape. I also have to reference Teresa more. She gets some at the end, but besides the idea that Clare has an insight as to what Miria dealt with during the seven years, Clare wonders if this is how Teresa felt back then as she grows closer to Miata.

“Original”

The Vampire Story. Good lord. Literally no progress here still.

Transhumanism. The last time I wrote on this, I stated I didn’t like the pitches I already had. Which makes me think back to a panel I sat in on Sunday. So, pro-wrestler Chris Jericho is writing a graphic novel! And he’s going to sell it as an NFT. Those two sentences make no goddamn sense to me. But, as he described his graphic novel, which is based on a character he developed and used in Japan called “The Painmaker/Pain Maker,” the only thing that came to my mind was, “Okay, Dexter… In SPACE!” Perhaps that’s unfair to Jericho but it gets to the issues of originality. You can clearly see where my pitches are derived by the media that’s influenced me. And part of my problem is I think it’s so derivative that even twists on the typical tropes aren’t enough. So I’m frustrated. But there is something I can do with this story and the previous story. But even great media can have very simple, very common stories and be amazing. Demon Slayer for instance. However, I think some of this is due to the next issue.

World-building. So, this came to me after that panel. I think why it’s easier for me (and probably everyone) to write fanfic is the world is already built. Okay Claymore is a bit unique in that… Well, I’ve joked about Norihiro Yagi going, “World-building? What’s that?” So, he wasn’t the best worldbuilder, but there is enough for me to extrapolate (or have very nice discussions with the fam). This is sort of why I attempted to do a full outline of Clare-and-Miata-Meet to see if it’ll make the writing easier. So, the big goal here for both original works is to set aside the story and plot. Build the worlds first. The Vampire Story has a minor leg-up here as I have some world-building documents but I need to scrap most of it and start over. This is where I’m probably going to look for some kind of worksheets or something to help get started. One of the things that made role-playing in that game I was in so frustrating was my writing partner and I often got into it over the limits of the world we were in. I didn’t want a near-omnipotent character, there needed to be defined weaknesses and flaws. If I knew the society I was dealing with, I could maybe craft a better story pitch even if it isn’t the most original thing in the world. And this all goes back to what Seanan says a lot in her panels and Patreon. Those of you rolling your eyes at me, get over it, she’s my favorite author. But she says, “Find what works for you.” And I’ve basically found that “just writing” doesn’t work for me. I need more structure and a plan because that’s what basically worked in graduate school. And that’s true of even my weight-loss and overall health improvements. No, I can’t always maintain perfection, but I don’t have to. I just have to keep plugging and accepting setbacks or not achieving something that particular day as part of life.

Other Writing-Related Things

Multi-tasking. Took a major hit this month and work is trying its best to make it even harder. I can only hope one of the many job applications I have out at different agencies hit. It’s not that I mind working hard, I just want better pay and I topped out at my current agency. Plus, my office is a mess. Senior management knows it but won’t do a damn thing. Their solution has always been, “Come work in HQ.” And now, when I’m willing to do it because they’re allowing remote positions, there are no positions opening because people won’t retire. Still, going back to structure and planning, I probably should try to set a writing schedule. Maybe three-days a week to start. Because some weeks, it’s going to be impossible to even get one and every day seems unhelpful because you can’t sustain that all the time. At least I can’t. If you can, mad respect to you.

Other. Something that came out of that panel on Sunday (Some IP Lawyer married to one of the Twins, The Winner Twins, Chris Jericho, Seanan McGuire, and Todd McCaffrey): You can’t fix a blank page. I have really, really got to stop trying to be perfect the first time out and letting that frustrate me when it’s not. I know this, I wrote a dissertation for god sakes. Hell, I wrote a chapter at the height of my depression (that was so bad that I finally went on antidepressants) that, to this day, I have no idea what I wrote. And while outlining might make draft one seem less bad or easier to write, I just got to write something even if it does not meet up to whatever standard I am imposing. If it is a bunch of short sentences just to make progress.
