Oh noooooo! The rabid dogs are holding Kakashi sensei captive!
I guess he won’t make it to training any time soon…

I wanted to practice dogs, so naturally I drew Kakashi and his pack.
Once again, I have no idea what anything other than Kakashi’s bed looks like so I put them all on my sofa. I have a corner sofa and Shiba is in my spot. I put them all in my living room autism nest lol (minus some squishmallows).

Kakashi, Young
Kakashi is quietly panicking on many levels, springing over rooftops, scanning them and the ground below.
Konoha was a big village.
Pakkun was a very, very, small dog.
He'd known that going into the exercise, but Pakkun insisted. An unwilling part of him grudgingly admitted that he was probably owed some of the stubbornness.
It was still a stupid decision to let a seven pound pug try and run on the rooftops.
"It's not like you could have known," Rin pointed out, as though she had read his mind.
She loved the puppies and while he had initially been resistant to it, he was glad to have her around now.
"Bisuke was about the same size when he started training with you, and Pakkun is already faster. I'm sure he's fine."
"If he was fine, he would have already found us," Kakashi replied.
Rin fell silent.
He felt a little bad, but Pakkun had never failed a tracking exercise before. The only thing he could figure was that adding a restriction to rooftop travel alone had resulted in some kind of incident.
"We should split up --"
"No," Rin interrupted. "What if he's still looking for us? Splitting the scents won't help."
She was right, and he sighed.
-- Across the village --
"Are you sure it's this way?"
You'd always suspected part of the reasons the village shinobi stayed on the roofs wasn't just to keep out of the way of civilians.
Confined to the ground yourself and with a little passenger in tow, it was very clear that the two of you were getting lost.
"I'm sure," growled the little pug. "Put me down. I'll find the boss on my own."
You looked skeptically at the bandage you'd wrapped around his back leg and then quickly away when he twisted his ears back.
You looked up into the sky, maybe this "boss" would find you two before you found them. In the mean time, the pug was cute. So cute. Too cute. Especially when he wrinkled his wrinkly little nose and growled at you like that.
"No way," you say, turning in the direction the little pug is still facing. "That leg needs to be treated. Are you sure you don't want me to take you too the hospital instead? Or maybe the Inuzuka compound?"
The puppy's little whine almost breaks your heart. You really wish that you could get up on the roofs too, but walking around with your crutches hoisted over your shoulder so you can carry him is really about all you can do right now.
"Left," he says sulkily, as you trail down yet another narrow street.
"At least put me over your shoulder," he grumbles finally, when your right leg shakes again, protesting the weight placed on it too early.
You pause, admittedly tired, but putting the dog on your shoulder seems a bit unstable.
You put him gently down on top of a barrel and shrug out of your jacket. It's a bit of maneuvering to make it into a serviceable sling but you do actually try to pay attention in the academy's survival classes so it doesn't take that long.
The dog seems much more comfortable in it while you click down the street at a slightly more even keel.
"By the way, what's your name?"
The dog is silent for so long you look down at him. He's swinging his head to-and-fro to catch whatever scent he has you tracking.
"What's yours?" he asks, gruff.
When you give it, he tells you to turn left again.
"I'm Pakkun," he says finally.
"It's nice to meet you, Pakkun."
He just humphs and tells you to turn right.
"Are you sure you're ok--"
The dog, Pakkun you remind yourself, glares at you.
"-kay with the sling?" you quickly tried to cover.
Pakkun grumbled and then told you to pause. "It's fine," he said. "You're in the academy, right? We need to go west."
You dared to stick a hand in the sling to pat Pakkun's back. "That's probably easier than trying to navigate the alleys. Just let me know if you loose the trail."
Pakkun tensed under your hand so you withdrew. Ninken weren't like normal dogs and this dog wasn't like a normal ninken.
"Maybe if we get to a more open area your boss will be able to see us better?"
"Just keep walking," he muttered so you did, making your slow way west. It took you a moment to figure out that the little thump at the edge of your ribs was probably what you'd feel getting hit by a little wagging tail.
Pakkun was right. It was easier to simply head in the right direction without having to decide which exact path was right.
It also so happened that you could head west and south a bit and end up passing the hospital, which is probably where you would look if you ever lost a teeny tiny ninken after he'd tumbled off a roof.
A cold nose touched the tip of your finger as you neared the end of a wood area.
"Wait."
The rest of Pakkun's adorable head followed, his soft puppy fur brushing your wrist.
Kidnapping, erm dognapping, wasn't exactly a crime in the ninja world as long as you didn't get caught and the dog was willing, right? If you told Pakkun how adorable he was maybe he'd let you dognap him just once a month... you and your teammate stole things from one another all the time. It was good training in tracking.
Light as air, a boy with grey hair and a mask landed in front of you, hands in his pockets.
Your eyes widened in surprise and you leaned back a bit on your crutches, stabilizing Pakkun with a hand on his very soft chest when he nearly leaned out of the sling.
The boy glanced at you with a dark, unreadable eyes before looking back down at the dog.
"Hey boss," the pug said, half sheepish, half grumble, but you could feel his curly little tail again.
A second later, a girl with short brown hair landed behind the boy.
"Pakkun!" she exclaimed, "what a relief."
He grunted. "This," he looked up at you, half lidded eyes still skeptical as he said your name, "found me."
This?
The girl came forward, which seemed weird since the dog clearly belonged with the boy, but she was also more patient as you rearranged the crutches and lifted the sling over your head.
"I found him limping, so I bound the leg, but I think he needs a healer."
Pakkun glared at you and you shrugged sheepishly. Just because ninja were trained to hide injuries in the field didn't mean you should hide them among allies.
"Pakkun! You should have gone directly here. What's with the trail we picked up behind the west side scrap iron shop?" The girl scolded, already unwrapping your jacket, her hands burning green.
You blinked in surprise, "You're a healer?"
"Mhm," she said, immediately distracted. You looked up at the boy to see him standing in a way that seemed a guarding position and then stepped back to look at the scene properly.
Both of them had their hitae-ate, so they'd probably seen battle already.
Pakkun had his leg extended as the girl moved her hand around it. Even though you wouldn't exactly be able to fight like you were used to with your leg the way it was, or really needed to in the village, you sharpened your awareness too, paying attention to what was going on around you instead of with her healing, even though you would have preferred to watch.
Out of the corner of your eye, you saw the boy glance at you and one shoulder sag back into a more relaxed position.
"Okay," the girl stood up, wiping sweat from her brow. She picked Pakkun up with one arm and offered him to the boy, who finally took back the dog with what seemed an intentional lack of expression, and then gave back your jacket.
"Thank you for finding him," she said. "We were getting really worried."
The boy turned his body away in a way you were sure was meant to convey that he was both done with this conversation and had not been worried, but his fingers were already buried in Pakkun's short fur, checking over the girl's work.
"Ka-"
A boy with orange goggles and spiky black hair all but fell from the tree behind you.
You tumbled back, wincing from the noise, although the girl seemed unperturbed.
"Where were you," she immediately changed tack to launch into the familiar chiding tones of someone who had said this exact same thing before. "We already found Pakkun."
The new boy rubbed the back of his head, "I think I followed that weird trail through the alleyways. You know they took three lefts?"
You barely covered a cough of laughter but the ninken's sharp ears, and apparently the grey haired kid's too, picked it up enough for Pakkun to send you another twist-eared look. The boy, you thought, might be similarly embarrassed, although he stood so stiffly he was doing a decent job of hiding it.
The dark haired boy and the girl were standing shoulder to shoulder, the way old friends often did. She glanced once at the other boy and then seemed to somehow resign herself.
"Anyways, thank you," she said with a kind smile. "See you around sometime."
And then they were turning away, bantering back and forth in a familiar rhythm as they took to the trees and were gone.

"I'm want to go through a few of the boxes today, is that okay?"
Kakashi clearly didn't want to leave your still-new home and you didn't want him to go, but he had some sort of clan meeting to go to. And Tsunade had been on your ass about making him.
Unfortunately, this was the kind of thing he couldn't be late for.
He sagged further into his flak jacket collar, which for someone so tall shouldn't make him appear cute but it did.
"It's fine," he murmured, looking around at the scattered boxes of stuff you'd dragged from his home when he'd made it clear that he wanted to start doing something about the mess of his clan's records. He really had let it pile up over the years. "Are you sure you don't mind?"
You grinned, showing just a little too much teeth, "I keep hoping to find some more pictures of you as a kid. I want to have evidence so you'll believe me when I say how adorable you are."
He looked down at the ground and sighed. "Well good luck. There weren't many of those to begin with."
Carefully, so he had time to pull away, you wrapped your arms around him. He didn't return the embrace but he did nuzzle against the scent gland under your jaw and seemed brighter when he straightened up.
"Well I'm off. Have... fun."
There was no intentionally audible sound of his stepping away so you figured he had probably used a shunshin. He had been understandably territorial after the move, taking circuitous routes to get here and back and concealing himself more than usual until the new space had finally started to smell of the two of you again.
You moved toward a promising looking box, Guruko padding through the maze behind you.
It wasn't Kakashi's fault really. A lot of the village's smaller clan records had been made into an absolute chaos when the Kyubi had attacked and fairly interval attempts on the village infrastructure hadn't really slowed down from there. The fact that Kakashi had mostly kept things from his old house packed away in boxes had likely been what kept it from being literally tangled into a hopeless mess.
The box you chose had worn edges, more than some of the others, and you sat down cross legged to slowly sort through the documents.
In a corner, about halfway down, was another smaller box. It was also half-squashed given that it wasn't all the way full, but all that padding had kept the treasure inside near pristine.
You purred to the empty room with delight when your mate's face, younger than even in his genin photo, appeared at the top of the stack.
There were a lot of shinobi in the village and there was a lot of your mate that you would never know because for a long time you hadn't known him. In that way you envied Asuma and Kurenai. Theirs was the kind of romance you'd dreamed of as a kid. They knew everything about one another because they'd lived so much of it.
Kakashi told you things, if you asked, but he was used to keeping his silence, pushing the past as far into the dark as possible, and you didn't often know what to ask about. He preferred to talk about you, but you adored him and wanted to reciprocate that interest.
It made you proud how far he'd come since you first started sharing glances across the room, back when you were the new person being pulled into the orbit of people Kakashi associated with over dango and stories of stupid choices made during promotion tests.
At least one of the photos was obviously an academy school photo, plane background and your mate in an incredibly nerdy little scarf.
A lot of the other photos were later, and equally cutely, of the pack as puppies.
Some of them had clearly been captured by an inexpert hand, the picture blurred with laughter as Kakashi tried not to trip on a very excited young Shiba, and a cute girl, Rin you knew, carefully wrapping Uhei's paw while Pakkun watched.
You frowned at the photo, something tickling the back of your memories.
A few more pictures gave you that same feeling, including a picture of Kakashi and Pakkun alone, looking comically similar with their half-lidded expressions and awkward postures, clearly being forced to try and pose.
You knew Pakkun now of course and it was obviously him, but something about that picture seemed awfully familiar.
Guruko wagged his tail when he asked you to find one of him and you couldn't refuse so together you dug through the box. There were even the dogs' first collars in a sturdier wooden box under a few old papers that looked like academy assignments.
You were still in it, Guruko rolling around and telling you stories about training as pups, when Kakashi came back home.
Kakashi smiled fondly when both you and Guruko immediately rolled upright and went to him.
"Look what I found," you tugged his sleeve in excitement and pulled him to the couch and coffee table where you had carefully place the pictures. "I'm so glad these survived. Look at how little the ninken were. Look at you," you pointed to another slightly shaky picture that showed Bull and Uhei "playing" a game of tug of war where Bull had to do very little to win while Kakashi was clearly laughing in the background.
You didn't miss the slightly sad scent that began to cling to your mate or the way his fingers shook when you handed him the photo.
You leaned shoulder to shoulder and went quiet while he sifted through the pictures. Stored in the box as they had been, they didn't look nearly as old as they clearly were.
"Obito took these," he finally said, softly.
You should have guessed you suppose. There were far fewer pictures with the dark haired boy in it, and of those most were selfie like and cut off part of the person he was with or his own brightly smiling face.
They were youthful photos of a much different time.
You pressed a kiss to the back of your mate's hand and tried to hold onto some of the weight that settled all too easily on his shoulders.
You pressed gently on the scent gland at his wrist when he'd hit the vague edge of the limit you'd sort of agreed on for guilty pining, in the event you found some new memory of his he'd never shared before. You let a whine build in your chest, just enough to let him know you were getting worried, and he slumped over on you, pressing you into the couch with his whole weight.
It was a funny little thing he did that you weren't sure if he had learned from Bull or Bull from him. Usually it meant he was redirecting his stress into literally using his body to protect yours.
For now, you allowed it. You didn't like the implication of value there, but you also knew it soothed your mate in an important way. And he did let you gently tug him so he was more just laying on top of you and he could feel the rumbling purr you were making.
You rubbed circles into his back while he opened his one sharingan and perused the photos again.
When he got to the one that had stopped you before, you finally spoke, keeping your words to a low murmur.
"There's something weirdly familiar about that one, like I've seen it before."
You allowed yourself a little snicker when Kakashi held it up and that expression, which he still made but in a slightly less petulant way that still mirrored Pakkun's more committed sulks, came back into full view.
Your mate's mask had slipped as he sometimes rubbed his face against the juncture of your neck and shoulder and you could feel the tired quirk of his smile against your skin, the way he huffed a faint laugh.
He even gifted you with a little purr when you tugged your fingers through his thick, soft hair.
"He does still make that face."
You snorted and felt like the sun had lit up your chest when Kakashi chuckled.
Kakashi would have happily fallen into a doze like this, but neither of you were in the particular habit of napping, unfortunately. There were dogs to feed and yourself to feed, clothing to unpack, bedding to air out.
He swiped the photos off the table and back into their box, to be stowed away for now, but a few days later he gifted you the one of him and Pakkun in a new protective frame.
The others ninken of course saw it and slowly, gently, demanded that Kakashi find some of them too, claiming that the captain couldn't be the only one with a photo around the house.
Pakkun gave you a weird look when he caught sight of your staring at the photo one day, grinning to yourself and pushing away again that feeling like you were missing some detail in looking at it.
It hit you a week or so later when you were alone again, trying not to fret about your mate being out on what should be a relatively safe information retrieval mission. Others were busy and he'd wanted to go out for a while, so he'd gone and left Pakkun with you.
This reassured you he didn't think the mission would be that tough, but it also had the downside of having the little pug's judgemental little face watching you find things to do to distract yourself after your own work was already done for the day.
"What?" you finally asked him, after trying and failing to read a book. "You've been staring at me for days. Is there something I should know?"
"Do you really not remember?" Pakkun asked, skeptical and gruff.
You frowned and looked where he did, at the shelf where the photo was leaning.
"I--"
"I never forget a scent," Pakkun said somewhat haughtily.
You had all but memorized the picture yourself by now. Pakkun's wrinkled baby face. "No way."
One of his adorable little eyebrows raised.
You looked back at the photo.
"It was his decision start courting you-"
You amusedly decided not to bring up the reality which was less like courting and more like the local tomcat adopting you via a series of birds brought to your door.
"-so we didn't say anything, but I told them all you remembered."
"I've met you before!"
Pakkun's adorable little tail was starting to wag.
"But I don't remember where."
He slumped into a sulk.
"Sorry," you said, patting his head in apology and going into the kitchen to get him some ham.
"Hmph." He followed you anyways, toenails clicking on the wooden floor.
"It was a long time ago though. Maybe it'll come back to me."
He leapt onto the counter and grumbled some kind of vague agreement, taking the meat delicately from your fingers.
You leaned against the counter while he ate, looking around the apartment. Kakashi's discomfort was shared. Your mate could be away for days or weeks at a time when things were busy or something bad came to the mission desk.
Having a space you owned, that wouldn't be subject to change every few years, somewhere for him to come back to, had seemed like the right call.
It was the right call, you reminded yourself firmly. Both of you needed some kind of stability, if only to help Kakashi start to unravel years and years of avoiding a majority of physical and emotional attachments.
But the time it was taking to really make the apartment feel like home could be frustrating. You missed having Kakashi's scent just being around as a consequence of his frequent presence.
"Don't worry too much," Pakkun said, gnawing on the little bone in the center of the ham. "The Boss will be back before you know it."
Boss. Hmm.
You shook your head, "I suppose finally putting together some of the cabinets will make it easier to put things away. Want to learn how to use a hammer?"
Pakkun licked his lips and looked up at you. His steps were so light you almost couldn't feel them when he sprang up to drape on your shoulder.
"You know dogs don't have thumbs right?"
"That hasn't stopped you before."
Pakkun just huffed ham-scented breath into your face as you went into the bedroom.

I think there could be a lot of things that contribute to the state of Kakashi's living environment. And while, yes, I do think he suffers from depression and that it might impact his ability to maintain his space as he'd like it at all times, I think moreso it would just come down to... available time.
When he's running constant missions, I would like to hope Kakashi allows himself to rest even if things are a little disorganized. I also think some of the "mess of a man" fanon stuff might come from the ninken.
Like, people with dogs often have toys and treats and hair all over the place at any given time. So when he's recently had the ninken in his place, I would expect it to be messier?
That doesn't mean he doesn't attend to it when he can (doesn't even mean it doesn't irritate him while it's like that, lol) but I can definitely understand some of the HCs about his space in context, I guess.
I don't know. Obviously, you don't have to agree with it (or me!) and you don't even have to answer this if you don't want to, but that's just sort of my take on it. Hope you are enjoying your free-range eggs and cheese!
Hey! Thank you for your input!
I think you brought up some good points, and I’m sure there’s probably times where he lets himself and his environment get a bit dishevelled, and though we don’t really get any hints from the show of that specifically, I can at least make a bit more sense of that, even though his living quarters are literally always neat and honestly, very minimalistic. That’s not really what bothers me though.
My contention is more the ‘total slob’/‘mess of an adult’ thing because I just don’t think there’s anything in canon to support that, the opposite, in fact. I know that’s not what you were talking about but that’s what I was thinking about, specifically. Like there’s a lot of wow Kakashi is a disaster (just like me) energy on tumblr and the person they ship him with is strong and perfect and will take care of him and I’m a bit over it if I’m 100% honest 😂
But I totally appreciate your opinions!! Thank you for sharing 💕 and I will! I’ve been craving halloumi recently but I’ll be very surprised if I see that anywhere lmao. Hope you’re having a good day 💕

Do you like Kakashi's dogs? Let's talk about why there are eight of them.
another example of naruto's ✨cultural code✨
contents | the eight dog warriors chronicles · legacy · eight confucian virtues. also look at the cuties love them sm
Tumblr media
Naruto Vol. 10 CH 90
[ one dog is wonderful, I'm saying as the owner of a sweet little york terrier. two dogs are good, they won't be bored together. three dogs? yeah, cool! how are you going to walk them though? four? yes... look, maybe we have to draw the line h- wha- EIGHT? Excuse Me!? ]
surely, it's worth starting with the fact that eight is a lucky number in Japanese culture — everybody watched Hachi. of course, this is not the only cultural detail where the eight is mentioned. I want to pay special attention to a thing that I didn't know about until I googled it, and this is clearly what Kishimoto was doing homage to with Kakashi's eight ninken.
The Eight Dog Warriors Chronicles
Better known as Nansō Satomi Hakkenden. and it's not just some kind of book, it's a novel, consisting of 106 booklets written by Kyokutei Bakin in XIX century. Hakkenden is considered the largest novel in the history of Japanese Literature. this is one of the main representatives of the gesaku genre, which includes works of a frivolous, joking, silly nature. further I will emphasize a few more times how damn popular this work is and how often it is reflected in culture.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
here are some illustrations for these books
now let's talk about the plot. It's weird, but it's weird at samurai-dogs-story level so stay here.
In brief, the story tells about the commander Satomi Yoshizane, whose native lands were attacked by the army of a man, whose forces surpassed those of Satomi, and the samurai in despair swore to a dog named Yatsufusa that the dog would get his beloved daughter Fuse as a wife if he chewed that man's throat. surprisingly, the dog not only understood the owner, but also fulfilled his wish! after that the commander refused to keep the promise. however, Fuse, true to her word of honor, went with Yatsufusa to the mountains and became his wife. upon learning that his daughter was pregnant, Satomi, in a rage, sent a samurai to kill Yatsufusa and bring Fuse home. she stood up for the dog anyways and died with him. at that moment, eight pearls with hieroglyphs that denoted the foundations of Confucian virtue burst out of her womb. (...cheers for mythology, I guess)
Soon, eight dog warriors who were Fuse's spiritual children were born in different parts of Awa province. after going through hardships, they got together and became vassals of the Satomi clan, then won the battle, and soon reached peace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
some more illustrations made by Utagawa Kuniyoshi. from left to right: Inukawa Sōsuke (the dog warrior), Inumura Daikaku (the dog warrior), Princess Fuse (their mother).
the novel mainly tells about each individual warrior dog and his shenanigans in a funny adventurous way. huge fame has led to excerpts from Hakkenden being staged at the Kabuki Theater and mentioned in the anime and manga, such as Inuyasha, Dragon Ball, as it turned out, Naruto and so on. there's also a lot of films and video games.
The eight virtues
these are loyalty, filial piety, benevolence, love, honesty, justice, harmony, and peace.
they relate more to Chinese culture, but basically Hakkenden was inspired by it too. since I did not read the whole novel, I would still like to mention at least the values on which it is based, and which were embedded in the symbolism of this story. It's quite interesting to apply this to Kakashi's dogs. gives them more weight and depth.
It is also interesting to note that the reason why Fuse gave birth to dogs was also that her father was cursed earlier in the story in a way that his descendants would become depraved like dogs. in Japanese culture, dogs embody the duality of character: the same mentioned filth and depravity, and devotion and bravery. so as samurai. but this is a different conversation, more related to Kakashi and his dog poetry.
Tumblr media
Did you get here? Here's an additional discovery for you✨
Pakkun's name (パックン) is derived from the Japanese onomatopoeia “pakupaku” (パクパク) which reflects the sound of munching.
Kakashi, that's very sweet of you.
Tumblr media
thank you for reading this to the end ♡

Naruto: Sensei … you and Bushier-Brows Sensei have been together for a long time, right?
Kakashi: Mm, we have.
Sakura: When did you first confess to each other?
Kakashi: Actually, Gai confessed to me on Valentine’s Day.
Sasuke: That’s pretty cliche, isn’t it?
Sakura: Cliche?? That’s romantic!
Gai, coming into the room: Not really. We were about 15 years old, I told him I loved him … and he pulled down his mask and bit my arm.
Naruto: … what the heck?!
Gai: *rolls up his sleeve and holds out his arm* See? I still have the marks!
Sasuke: Kakashi … what the hell, old man?
Kakashi: Oi; in my defense, I was raised by my ninken. And they taught me that when you love something, you put your mark on it, to show that it’s yours.
Kakashi, to Gai: You should be flattered! I immediately returned your confession with one of my own!
Gai: NEXT TIME JUST USE YOUR WORDS, RIVAL!
Kakashi: Words fade, but a bite mark lasts FOREVER!! Just like my eternal love for you, idiot!!
Gai, tearing up: Eternal love? Awwww, Kakashi! That’s the sweetest thing you’ve ever said to me!
*the two start making out*
Naruto: S-sasuke ... if ... if I wanted to bite your ... Sasuke, holding out his arm: I thought you'd never ask. Sakura:

THE KAGES AND THEIR GREEN BEASTS
But a modern day AU take with the whole family and the ninken! Ningame is chilling at home, thank you very much. :) This thing took much longer to sketch and color than I anticipated. Hahhhh hahahaha.
Headcanons and easter eggs after the cut
RasaDai: Is it crack? Yes. Is it impossible? Yes, yes, they’re both dead. Do I still ship them? HELL YES. My old old man yaoi (crack) rarepair. Rasa inherits the nearly bankrupt firm from his deceased bastard of a father, and had to devote his whole life to work. He loses Karura after she gives birth to Gaara, and now he’s a single dad whose grown up kids hate his guts. Can this old man still find love with an older DILF? Except he’s definitely not going to wear that green tracksuit. (also that’s Suna designer wear on Rasa and Pakkun’s carrier)
KakaGai: These boys. These men. Husbands, rivals, friends, eternal loves. Kakashi with his jorts and baby pink crocs 😂 (thanks @urieskooki for the color pick) with ANBU gibbets. Gai with Daytime Tiger-inspired shoes! I love having Bisuke perching on Gai and adopting his sparkles ✨. Kakashi giving Gai the ‘I’m pinning you down later’ look. Also, if you really want to know what Kakashi’s reading, check the tags. ;)
GaaLee: My loves, my babies 🥰 Okay I gave Gaara his Shippuden pants bands and his shoes are gourd inspired. He’s excited to finally get to hold a puppy and promptly carries the meanest-looking one (Urushi, surprised, gives a tentative tail wag). In the meantime, Lee has their snacks and drinks ready ❤️ The man is smitten with Gaara. He is composing love songs for him as we speak. He’s also rocking dragon-print kicks (I used my own dragon design from the CNY card).
The Ninken: Ok some headcanons. All the dogs were adopted by Kakashi, except for Pakkun who was his dad’s pet before he died. Pakkun prefers to ride in his carrier than to walk in his older years. Akino, being partially blind, sticks close to his emotional support dog (Pakkun). Shiba is giving puppy eyes to Rasa in case he can get pets. Guruko being a naughty baby running between people’s legs. Bull is just chilling with his new collar—Kakashi replaced the spikes with pompoms for comfort. Uhei likes Lee best and stays close to him.
This image wouldn’t have been completed without encouragement and feedback from @egregiousderp @bayheart @urieskooki Glugchat and the good people who enable me at the KakaGai discord. Mwah love you all.

Hey there! For Kakashi Birthday requests! Either Obito or Yamato trying (and failing) to shove Kakashi's face into his cake, perhaps falling into the cake hehehheh. 🎂 If you're in the mood for drawing his pups, Kakashi holding his birthday cake out of reach of pakkun or another ninken! Of course, everyone involved may wear a birthday hat at your discretion 🥳 Draw whatever brings you joy! Happy doodling!
Tumblr media
I love Obito and Yams, but I think Yams would be too smart for the image that popped into my head with this request 😆

your boyfriend can’t help but sigh, the smallest of pouts sitting on his pretty lips. “I’ll just feel more comfortable if one of the ninken are here with you while I’m gone,” you can see the sincerity in his eyes, only pure intention behind his gaze, “I’m gonna be gone for who knows how long and i don’t want anything to happen to you, not when things between us are just starting.”
it’s with a small smile and a dramatically loud sigh that you roll onto your back, “fine fine, don’t have to get so sappy on me copy ninja,” kakashi smiled at your words, rolling over and resting on his forearms, placing a kiss to your cheek before getting out of bed.
you watch him with a smile as he summons his ninken, you expect to see the whole pack but only one appears, pakkun.
“what is it boss?” the deep voice makes your smile grow wider, the dog nods along as kakashi explains to him what’s happening.
“hi pakkun” you wave, the dog lifts his paw slightly and you giggle. kakashi can’t help but stare lovingly at the interaction, his eyes forming into small crescents.
“I’ll summon you again when i leave, got it?” the dog replies in a grunt before disappearing just as fast as he arrived.
kakashi got back into bed with you, opening his arms so you could rest on his chest. it was quiet, the only sounds were a couple birds chirping and the wind rustling the leaves in the trees.
“d’you think he’ll like me?” your eyes were wide as you looked at kakashi, he smiled and kissed your forehead before replying, “he’s gonna love you.”
and so as you closed the door as kakashi left for his mission you turned to the pug, a smile on your face, “do you like doing regular dog things too?” pakkun’s tail wagged involuntary as you showed him a frisbee.
kakashi was gone a week, for him it was a long grueling, terrible week.
pakkun had the best week of his life with you. he’d gone to a lake, played fetch countless of times, got to walk around the village with you, and best of all he got endless cuddles and pats from you.
when your boyfriend returned he was shocked to find pakkun upset at his arrival, already asking when he’d be summoned to protect you again.
and so every other time after that, pakkun was always summoned while kakashi was gone, his little tail wagging as he saw you and practically jumping into your arms when kakashi left.
you loved the little dog so much. you’d even convinced kakashi to let pakkun be the ring bearer at your wedding (it didn’t take much convincing.)
nothing changed when kakashi became the sixth hokage, when he knew he’d have a late night he’d summon pakkun to keep you company.
and so when he learned his wife was pregnant, pakkun became like gum to your side anytime kakashi was gone. you didn’t mind, you loved having him around to keep you company and help you run errands and it gave your husband peace of mind. it was a win-win really.
kakashi never really got to see much of what you two got up to in his absence. during the beginning of your relationship you’d always greet him at the gates of the village. now that he was hokage he’d always come home to you cooking or doing something, pakkun usually just sitting next you.
with a happy sigh kakashi set aside the last of his paperwork for the day, glancing at the clock and smiling when he realized he was done nearly two hours earlier than what he had told you. he quickly grabbed his things and made his way back home, excited to finally be with you again.
the sixth hokage opened the door quietly, slipping his shoes off before his eyes landed on the two figures on the couch. his heart grew in his chest, warmth spreading across his body as a smile found its way onto his lips.
pakkun lay curled up in your lap, your hand resting softly on his back, you’d surely fallen asleep petting him. the two of you were breathing evenly.
kakashi didn’t wanna move, he didn’t even wanna breathe in fear of disturbing the two of you. but alas, pakkun was ninken and his ears twitched as the sound of kakashi’s quiet steps.
“welcome back boss” pakkun sat up, jumping off the couch and stretching with a big yawn, shaking before sitting in front of kakashi.
“i see you’re having a grand time with my wife,” he laughed, pakkun looked back at you before looking at kakashi once more.
“she gave me bacon today, she told me not to tell you but i just can’t keep things from you” kakashi smiled at his words, he couldn’t help but picture his own kid confessing that you’d snuck him an extra cookie after dinner.
“kashi?” you mumbled, sitting up and rubbing your eyes, you stretched a bit before smiling at your husband, “you’re home early.”
kakashi wasted no time in sitting next to you, placing a kiss to your cheek and resting his much larger hand atop your now growing baby bump. “couldn’t bear to be another second away from the two of you.”
pakkun had found his way to your other side, nuzzling himself under your arm and laying down, a content sigh when you scratched the top of his head.
“pakkun told me you gave him bacon,” your eyes went wide and kakashi laughed, “mama is gonna spoil you rotten isn’t she?” he spoke, bending down a bit to place a soft kiss to your belly.
“as if you won’t!” you retorted, a smile on your face when he blushed deeply, shy giggles leaving his lips. he couldn’t fight back, he knew you were right. instead he placed a kiss onto your forehead before getting up to shower and change.
before he rounded the corner to the restroom he glanced back, smiling as he saw you placing a now napping pakkun onto your lap, continuing to shower him affection.
kakashi couldn’t help but smile at his little family, happiness and love coursing through his veins as pakkun nuzzled up to your baby bump.

Pakkun knows it's time. Has felt it coming for a long while, now.
His muzzle is grey, his joints ache when he tries to climb the stairs outside, so he uses Gai's ramp instead. He can't jump up onto the couch anymore, but that's all right because there are always plenty of cushions for him on the floor.
It's one of the nice things about being back at the Hatake Estate, ever since Kakashi returned with his partner and his Rival shortly before welcoming the little one that totters around, now, knocking into low tables and screaming for his parents.
Pakkun is grateful to have witnessed all of it, grateful that Kakashi senses their time running short, too, and no longer dismisses him unless Pakkun asks.
He doesn't know how to tell Kakashi that it's time. Doesn't know how to grumble the words I love you, but I have to go.
It was never supposed to be like this. Pakkun is a ninja hound, a tracker with an analytical mind and a skill for violence. He and Kakashi made a pact when the latter was still a boy. Pakkun remembers how he didn't flinch as he sliced his thumb open to sign the contract, remembers the strange aloofness he exuded, so unexpected for a pup so young.
Had Sakumo not died, Pakkun imagines he and Kakashi might have maintained a purely professional relationship.
But watching that stoic child crumble into a broken version of the pup he should have been allowed to be tugged at something within Pakkun with a ferocity he typically reserved for missions.
He slept beside Kakashi that night, the way he had once watched over the boy's mother on the eve of his birth. Perhaps it was not exactly a mission, but to protect Sakumo's progeny seemed well within the parameters of his duties at the time.
The thing which blossomed soon after that--affection or respect or whatever it might be--had been unintentional. Without a pup of his own, Pakkun found himself drawn to Kakashi's side increasingly often beyond the scope of missions. Found himself grateful when Kakashi summoned him on his days off, so they could spend time quietly within one another's presence as Kakashi read and Pakkun napped in a sun spot at his feet.
Now, as Pakkun rests on a cushion, watching Kakashi smile with his family as the little boy in his lap unsuccessfully fights off sleep, the creases at the edges of his eyes tell a story of both tragedy and triumph; one Pakkun is proud to have witnessed. To have played an important role in.
He knows he should do something. Make it obvious. That he should lift his grizzled muzzle and say, Boss, to gather the room's attention. Pakkun knows Kakashi would hand his son to Gai or his partner and direct his attention to the little pug he's known all his life, even before his life began.
He's become keenly aware of Pakkun's age in recent months, especially, taking care to spend extra time with him whenever possible.
But Pakkun doesn't want to interrupt the happy moment before him, so he simply huffs a low sigh as he settles his chin on his crossed paws. His eyelids feel heavy, his breath moves slowly in and out, unhurried. He almost laughs because why would his lungs hurry when there is nowhere else he'd rather be?
Bull and Uhei and Shiba and Akino will understand. Bisuke and Guruko and Urushi will not, but that's okay. They will still have one another. Still have Kakashi.
Even without their diminutive leader, Pakkun knows the pack will fight on. Welcome new ninken into their ranks. He knows one day, Kakashi's pup will sign a contract of his own, though he isn't sure the boy will be as composed as his father when he does.
He's inherited all the best parts of both parents, and Pakkun thinks the fact that he's more emotive than Kakashi was at the same age is probably a good thing.
A soft chuckle fills Pakkun's ears and he looks up at Kakashi one last time, notes the twinkling joy in his dark eyes as he listens to Gai tell a raucous story, rocking softly as his son sleeps, face tucked against his chest. Peaceful despite Gai's booming voice.
Pakkun knows it's time. Has felt it coming for a long while, now. He doesn't know if he will stay here, or if his death will act as a dismissal, sending him back to the place where his packmates are.
Whatever happens, he only hopes Kakashi will forgive him for not interrupting the moment to say goodbye. It's too good a moment to shatter with sadness, even if he does wish he could say one more time that he is proud of the man Kakashi has become, of the life he has built.
But Kakashi knows already; words have never been necessary between them to be fully understood. A gift of their pact so many are never lucky enough to experience.
As his eyes slide closed, Pakkun knows Kakashi will understand. Even if he's hurt or angry at first, he's never been one for emotional farewells, either. It is gift enough to know you have been truly cared for. An even greater gift for Pakkun to know Kakashi will be well loved even after he is gone.
I love you, but I have to go. And now I know you'll be okay without me.

hi! welcome back! may i request some dad!kakashi hcs?
omg just thinking about dad!kakashi makes my heart melt, i originally thought about him having a daughter but i think you can read it as it was a boy just aswell, and i imagine them being like 3-4yo. anyway, hope you like it! let me know what you think!!!
dad!kakashi who everyday wakes up early to make them breakfast, most times just simple animals shape pancakes that he knows it will make them smile.
dad!kakashi who cant never say no to them, of course he didn't want them to be spoiled but he couldn't deny anything they asked. playing with dolls? yes. dressing up as characters? sure. tea party? of course. playing in the mud? absolutely. drawing on the wall? make sure to hide it from you.
dad!kakashi who didn't think he was going to be a good father when you told him you we're pregnant, but couldn't imagine his life without your children now.
dad!kakashi who always took you two on walks by the creek, one hand holding yours and the other one on his pocket, watching carefully your children walk in front of you two, always getting distracted by their surroundings. most times his ninken were there too, and while you and him sat on the grass and enjoyed each other presence, they would play with your kid and you two would just watch it in pure bliss.
dad!kakashi who always carries them when they're asleep, holding them carefully and slowly walking back home, not wanting to wake them up after consuming so much energy after playing all day.
dad!kakashi who reads for them every night before they go to sleep, always making sure to change his voice in certain characters lines.
dad!kakashi who every night tells them 'i love you' before giving them a forehead kiss and making sure their puppy plush were there for them to hold at night.
dad!kakashi who sometimes does not wakes up early, but gets woken up in his favourite way instead, with your kid happy voice jumping on the bed and a caressing kiss on the cheek from you.
dad!kakashi who don't rush his kid way to the academy, if they want to be a ninja just like their parents its okay for him, he would teach they everything they wanted to know, but at the same time making sure they're happy and enjoying their childhood just like any other kid, no pressure at all.
dad!kakashi who loves just sitting on the couch, you three together plus the dogs, under the blanket and watching a movie peacefully on rainy days.
dad!kakashi who on the same day when the lights goes out because of the rain, tells histories to your kid, most of them about him and you, and how after so many years loving you he finally made you reciprocate his feelings, which you always corrected him saying you always did but he was too 'silly' to notice.
dad!kakashi who on the nights they would wake him up, afraid about the monster under the bed or hiding on their closet, he were always there to calm them down and to make sure there weren't any monsters, even threatening the said monsters if they dared to scare his kid again.
dad!kakashi who most of his days he liked to spend his time holding you tight, watching the little piece of love you two created together, not believing how he got so lucky.
_________
"but dad what if they come back?" he had been asked, watching the concerned look on his kid face.
"if they come back me and mom will be here to protect you pup, and they would have to deal with a very angry me for scaring you again, they would be in trouble for sure" he said stroking their hair.
"what are you going to do with them? are they going to be grounded?"
"worst, pup", he looked in their eyes with mischievous smile on his face "i'm gonna make them eat all the broccoli we have on the fridge".
"oh my god" they said afraid for the monsters.

A late submission for Kakashi Week 2023: Recovery.
[obkk; ninken; obito survives the war; nightmares; comfort]
Tumblr media
Bedtime Story
Obito is fighting a lot of demons because all those voices and urges can’t disappear without a trace all at once. He needs support, he needs someone to believe in him. Kakashi gives him that. They sit on his bed. Obito has learnt what affection is like, and he is learning how to show it himself. Deep in his heart he knows he doesn’t deserve it, but Kakashi’s voice is reassuring. He says that he cares; he says that he loves him, the real him, and that he will be there. Through all the bad things, unpleasant things. Obito asks to tell him this again, and one more time. He draws Kakashi closer, their foreheads touch. Obito’s hand moves slowly, gently and stops over Kakashi’s heart. It flutters; it overflows with fondness. For a split second everything stops. Mokuton release swiftly pierces the heart. Kakashi recoils, finds Obito’s gaze, and doesn’t recognize the face three inches away. Mad red eyes are there instead of Obito’s familiar loyal, wondering brown.
_
Kakashi wakes up in cold sweat scooting away to the edge of the bed. It’s the same bed, the same dark room, so he’s trying to shake it off as fast as he can and get a grip on reality. He’s not new to nightmares, but this… This was horror. Seeing those eyes again, filled with that ruthless crazy determination to put an end to everything, was nothing less than devastating. He turns on the night lamp to invite some warm light into the bedroom and dissipate the remaining fear of… Obito.
He takes a deep inaudible breath and turns to look at the man sleeping next to him. Splayed on his side of the bed, Obito is occupying as much space as possible. He is lying on his back with the blanket covering only his stomach. His left leg is resting on Bull who doesn’t mind serving as a footrest as long as he is allowed on the bed now and then. Another ninken occupies half of Obito’s pillow (because “He can’t just take my favorite pillow, Boss! I don’t care if it was his in the first place!”). Unaware of his furry rival, Obito has his head tilted to the left, so Biscuit’s butt is only millimeters away from his nose.
Kakashi contemplates the scene and can’t help but chuckle. After having taken in the view, he turns off the light and quietly moves closer to gently guide Obito’s head away from the dog’s bum to the right side. He notices a couple of dog hairs on his cheek and blows them away. Then he settles on his left side next to Obito, facing him. Before Kakashi can go back to sleep he takes Obito’s right arm and hugs it in, close to his chest.
It was just a bad dream.

part of the pack
kakashi x reader
This is based on an excerpt from a sequel to one of my stories. Also, I was craving some Kakashi fluff so I turned it into a little one shot <3
Word count: .7k
---
By the time you walk through the door and are met with your dark apartment, you can barely keep your eyes open. Your movements get slower and slower as you lean against the door and it clicks shut, toeing off your sandals and letting your bag fall off your shoulder. Unpacking can wait until the morning; all of the energy you have left will be spent peeling off your mission clothes and immediately getting into bed.
It’s then you remember that there will be no one to get into bed with tonight, and your heart hurts for a moment. Kakashi left for his mission today, only a few hours ago you have to guess. You pray good thoughts and safety over him once again as you click on the small kitchen light to get a glass of water before bed.
It’s then you spot a sticky note on the corner of the cabinet in familiar handwriting. A tired but warm smile creeps onto your face as you read it.
I’ll be back in a few days. I already miss you. - K
Not only does the placement of his sticky note warm your heart (he knows you almost never go to bed without a glass of water), but these simple, thoughtful notes have seemed to become a custom gesture. You have quite the collection now, all kept in a small box in your closet (Kakashi doesn’t know that).
With a fluttering feeling in your chest, you grab your water and make your way to the bedroom. Despite your growing exhaustion, you feel happy, safe, and loved even when Kakashi isn’t here, and he always knows exactly what to do to make sure that’s the case.
But it's the second sticky note by your closed bedroom door that catches you off guard. In the same characteristic, scribbly penmanship, there’s a short note:
They wanted to sleep here tonight.
Your heart warms for the second time that night as you chuckle and open the door. Sure enough in the darkness, you’re able to make out about eight lumps of dog-like shapes covering your entire bed as well as hear Bull’s deep, rhythmic snore.
When you first met his ninken, Kakashi introduced you as his partner. “She’s a part of the pack, now,” Kakashi had said. The next thing you knew, they were all over you, giving you kisses and nuzzling against your leg. It was one of the greatest honors you’ve ever felt, to be welcomed into Kakashi’s family. The dogs became a constant presence in your life from then on as well as frequent house guests (They would never tell Kakashi, but they all think your bed is much comfier).
They made the stress and exhaustion from missions and work instantly disappear from your mind whenever they were around, and they loved your constant attention because of that. And now, their presence gives you comfort even when Kakashi is gone.
You quickly change out of your mission clothes and into your pajamas before the exhaustion hits you fully. Through the dark, you can see all of the dogs piled onto your bed, not leaving much room for you. You try to make as little movement as possible as you carefully climb in, stepping under the blanket and squeezing into a spot between Bull and Uhei. You pull part of your pillow out from under Akino so you can lay your head down fully, letting out a large sigh as soon as you do. Your body instantly relaxes into the warmth from not only your blanket but the dogs as well. You turn to find Pakkun lying on top of the other pillow next to your head where Kakashi’s mop of moonlight hair usually is.
You’re hit with an overwhelming feeling as you sink into the pile of dogs around you: that this is your life, this is your family, and even when you thought you would have to fall asleep alone, someone made sure that you wouldn’t have to.
It almost causes you to cry as you turn on your side and pull the blankets up to your chin with a smile. How lucky you are. How lucky you are to love and be loved by Kakashi. How lucky you are to watch out for each other for all your lives.
You fall asleep with the moonlight shining through the window, gratitude warming your heart, and sweet dreams of Kakashi.
And somewhere far away, Kakashi stops in his tracks, looks up at the moon, and smiles.

Book Club (Kakashi Hatake)
Prologue - The Ambush
Kakashi sure as hell isn't going to flirt. Good thing you've got sleep-deprived courage (and Gai) at your back.
cw: alcohol use
word count 1.9k (chapter 1/9)
read it on ao3 here
"Maa, Asuma, did you forget to invite Kakashi again?", you scold, scanning the room for a flicker of silver hair even though you know you won't find it. All you see is Genma at the bar, buying a drink for a woman you're pretty sure is different to the one he was flirting with fifteen minutes ago.
"No. He just didn't want to come.", Asuma states this in a tone that suggests a lack of surprise, even as Gai slumps in his seat with disappointment. Kakashi has never been much for getting together with your old academy class, even when alcohol is involved. Asuma shoots you a sideways glance over his drink. "Although I'm sure that would have changed if I'd told him you'd be here."
"Huh?"
"Come on-", he takes another sip of sake and scoffs, not unkindly. "You've noticed how strange he acts around you."
You also take a swig of your drink, intrigued but not quite sober enough to really think about his words. "It's Kakashi. Isn't he strange all the time?"
Asuma laughs loudly - Kurenai looks at him from all the way across the room, you notice, you'll have to corner her in the bathroom later on - and claps a hand onto your shoulder. "Alright, I won't spoil it for you." He's smiling at you like the cat that's got the cream. You don't like it one bit.
"Asumaaaaaaa, don't be like that!", you complain, shrugging his hand off your shoulder and trying to fix him with a stern glare. When he returns it, you crumble - you're glad you didn't have him as a sensei back in your genin days. Besides, Asuma is too loyal to Kakashi, and not much for gossip. But-
"Gai! You know what he's talking about, don't you?!". You point an accusatory finger across the table at Gai, who has already won three separate drinking contests and has the flush to prove it. It's comical how hard he tries to avoid your gaze.
One more drinking contest later, he's yours. Asuma sighs as Gai begins his usual speech.
"My eternal rival Kakashi feels very strongly about me! Our rivalry is intensely passionate, in fact, it is unmatched! But, because our hearts are so inexplicably connected-", Gai lurches to his feet here, eyes shining with tears, "-I can sense that Kakashi feels almost as passionately about you!"
Huh? That can't be right, can it? You take a deep drink and barely even wince; then you look at Asuma, who surely can put the story straight. It's probably more like you've accidentally offended Kakashi, and inadvertently sucked yourself into a weird eternal-rival-threeway. Maybe one of his ninken likes you more than him. Yes, that'll be it. Pakkun was particularly taken with you that time you had to swing by Kakashi's apartment to deliver a message.   Asuma looks somewhat defeated, but also a little pleased. "Oh, yeah. He's got it bad for you. Remember how he disappeared from your birthday party?" You'd assumed Kakashi had just got bored and went home to nap. He'd barely even said hello to you that night. "Genma got him pretty drunk and we managed to get it out of him. Then I got him more drunk, and he fell out the chair when he tried to get up and wish you a happy birthday."
"And I carried him home in my arms.", Gai sniffles, clasping your hand tightly. "And he opened his soul to me and cried freely from the power of his love!"
"No he didn't.", you deadpan.
"No-", he concedes. "But I know he wanted to!"
This is not how you expected the evening to go. Part of you doesn't quite believe them - then again, Asuma isn't the type to stir the pot and he knows Kakashi well - and you've heard enough of Gai's power of love speeches to know how serious he is about the topic. Thank God Kakashi isn't here tonight, or you might combust.
"He's going to bolt if I tell him I like him, isn't he?" Both of your friends nod gravely. One thing you remember very well from the academy is that Kakashi loves to brood: you need to let him stew in his feelings until he can't ignore them anymore, or you'll just scare him off. It only takes you and Gai two more drinks to come up with a brilliant idea - why not give him a little push in the right direction?
~
Ah. There he is.
He's running late - again - to meet Gai. You're not sure why Gai doesn't just start scheduling their weekly training sessions for the afternoon, instead of an ungodly time in the morning. You don't remember ever seeing Kakashi out before noon of his own volition. Then again, you don't remember Kakashi being on time for anything either. You briefly imagine Gai trying to fit in 1000 pushups before his eternal rival arrives at the training ground.
Oh, well. He's already late. Might as well commit to it.
Clearly, Kakashi is unbothered by the thought of neglecting his poor, dedicated rival. In fact, he isn't even looking where he's walking - and why would he? The wide street down to the yard is always empty at this time, because any sensible shinobi is in bed, asleep, and staying out of trouble. He doesn't notice you perched up on the rooftop of the ramen shop even when he walks right in front of it. You grin a little to yourself: you really are quite good at masking your chakra. You're so confident in your abilities that you even lean over the edge of the roof to get a proper look at the book he's buried his nose in.
It takes everything in you not to gasp out loud with glee. You'd recognise Jiraiya's preposterous illustrations anywhere.
This makes everything so much easier.
There's a little side alley a short way up, that weaves between shinobi apartments before coming out onto the boulevard right by the weapons store. Kakashi is wandering along at the leisurely pace of a man with nowhere to be, so it isn't much of a rush to reach it, but you're still a little breathless with anticipation. He's chuckling quietly at his book when you dash out the alley, swing a left, and crash square into his chest. Right as you do, you unmask your chakra, allowing it to just brush against his in a faux expression of surprise. He recognises your chakra, you can feel it, how his own energy reflexively gives way to yours. Kakashi doesn't stagger at all and you pretty much bounce right off him, but you do hear the snap of his book closing swiftly.
"Woah! I'm so sorry, I'm in such a rush to-", you exclaim, with what you think is a pretty good attempt at shock, as you right yourself and look him in the eye. "Oh. Hey, Kakashi!"
He blinks, then greets you in return. "You should be more careful. There's no need to be in such a rush all the time."
Your heart flutters a little bit at the implication that he pays such close attention to the chaotic pace you live life at.  If you aren't careful, you're going to be the one leaving this encounter flustered. So you laugh it off, and pretend to readjust your flak jacket. "I do rush, don't I? It's just, I've been up all night pretending to be a particularly noisy owl outside one of my genin's window, and honestly I'm just desperate to go home and sleep."  This is true - Haruki called you old for needing a nap yesterday, the little shit.
Kakashi doesn't even question why you've decided to torture one of your students. "I prefer to make monster noises outside Naruto's door when I'm aiming for sleep deprivation."
The one eye you can see crinkles slightly at the corner when you laugh. Otherwise, he doesn't react, so you decide to store away the image of him growling with his face pressed up against a dingy apartment door for a time when you need cheering up. Instead, you decide to set your plan into action. You're going to lose your nerve if you don't get a move on.
"Are you going to train with Gai?", you ask, as if you don't already know. Kakashi hums nonchalantly, switches his book to the other hand, and leans his weight against the wall of the store. You inch forward just a little as you continue, "We should get together someday soon too."
Kakashi's eye widens slightly. "Hm - to train, oh -", and you're so glad he has a dirty mind, because the thought of flustering him has your courage building by the second.
Finally, you allow your eyes to flicker down to his Icha Icha novel - he's carrying the discreet cover version, rather than the much more lewd one you've seen in the bookshop underneath your apartment. The plain binding makes it easy to see how well-thumbed the book really is. Flashing him your loveliest smile, you move in for the kill. "Say, Kakashi, what are you reading? It must be quite a book for you to be so engrossed so early in the morning."
It's hard not to almost, almost, feel bad for him as his whole body tenses up. "It's, ah... well... it's...",  Kakashi pauses, clears his throat, and then clears it again. You give him an encouraging mhm as his knuckles turn white against the cover.  "...An action novel." He finishes, his voice strained.
"Well, I've been looking for a new book to read in my downtime. Would you mind if I borrow it once you're finished?", you ask. You're starting to grin a bit too much as you speak, but hopefully you're managing to pass it off as just being happy to talk to him - to be honest, you smile at Kakashi far too much even when you aren't torturing him.
He's starting to slide down the wall just a little as his knees weaken."You want to read it?"
"If that's okay with you. It would be interesting to see what you like," you respond, allowing the pause to drag out just a little longer than necessary,"...to read." He might actually be having a nosebleed under his mask, you think, as he fixes his gaze very intently at the lamppost behind your head.
"Everything alright, Kakashi?"
Suddenly, he's skirting around you like you're hot coals. He starts to skitter away up the street, one hand rubbing the back of his neck as he mumbles,"Yes. I just realised how late I am to meet Gai, I should go, hate to leave him waiting-"
A gentle hand on his forearm stops him dead in his tracks. "Of course. Well, it was a lovely surprise to see you. Enjoy your training session." You're sure to give the exposed skin there a gentle squeeze before letting go. His chakra chases after you.
"Enjoy your nap.", he replies, staring at you unblinkingly, voice absent. Something tells you Gai will be winning whatever fresh hell he's got planned for this morning - he's probably about 500 pushups deep right now, so you really should get going. Maybe you'll have a nice warm bath and read an action novel of your own. You start down the boulevard in the opposite direction, in much less of a rush than you began, and wave back over your shoulder.
"See you soon, Kakashi. Remember to bring me that book once you're finished!"
You can only see one quarter of his face, but you're pretty sure he's blushing. God, you really do like him.

Hi! I see some fanarts of Kakashi with his ninkens in house (washing, slleping together etc) - but we haven't such plot from Kishimoto. I'm sure, his dogs are summoned beings (like frogs by Naruto, like Katsuju etc). A summoning requires chakra as we know, so Kakashi do in when it needs help from his ninkens. Maybe, maybe he can summon them just for fan... But I think really they didn't live in his house like a usual dogs.
What do you think about?
Yeah, you're absolutely right, unlike the Inuzuka dogs, Kakashi's Ninken are summons so they don't actually live with Kakashi canonically, they have their own world and Kakashi only summons them when he needs them because they do need chakra to be summoned but it's just fun to do fanarts of them with Kakashi, I think everyone already knows that it's canonically not possible for them to live with Kakashi and I think the reason why ppl do that just with Kakashi's summon and not with any of the other characters summons, like Naruto and his toads for example is just simply because everyone loves dogs lol, I mean, look at them, they are so adorable 😍❤️

not a ship post but how funny would it be for people to mix shino and kiba's names up? at some point people give up and call them by 'shiba' just because it's guaranteed to send both kids running (we are talking genin-age).
tsume at some point: shi - ki - argh whatever SHIBA!
shino and kiba tuning into a very old summoning technique - call your kids the wrong name jutsu: THAT'S NOT MY NAME!!
bonus fun facts
tsume and hana had genuinely mixed up shino, kiba and akamaru. shino by virtue of his association with kiba had been called akamaru more times than his name. he's used to it
kakashi has a ninken named shiba that runs loose and he doesn't genuinely want to summon kibashino but somehow they've been trained to react to the name so kakashi is walking the street calling for shiba (the dog) and two teenagers (shiba - shino and kiba - unholy duo) turn up like 'you called?'
people who haven't met shino or kiba before think shiba is their name
shino and kiba have called each other shiba completely on instincts and now they just sigh and move on
it was funny when they were 12 but now naruto can't tease kiba anymore because kiba hypes up shino like you wouldn't believe. every team needs a cool guy and kiba nominates shino for this title (he literally told everyone but shino and hinata)
actually convenient to summon all three of them (akamaru is now part of the shiba bundle). imagine you're out in a field then suddenly there's a dog, a dog ninja and a bug ninja summoned from thin air. i'd retire
easier to shift blame. kiba played this card well into adulthood. he's perfected 'did you mean to call for shino or kiba?' and when people try to deliberate this he would disappear
shino's kids at the academy call him 'shiba sensei' and it stuck. they think shino's legal name is shiba aburame
kakashi somehow worked out a deal with akamaru and occasionally takes the massive dog out for a walk with all his 8 dogs (sometimes even without kiba knowing). when asked, he makes sure to introduce akamaru as shiba 2.0 and akamaru would nod and shake (why does he have two dogs name shiba? why not?)
it's listed in bingo books under aliases and as someone who have to endure bureaucracy weekly, making changes is akin to hell so people leave 'shiba' where it is. the trouble is that both shibas get in a rotten mood if they hear 'are you shiba?' from an enemy because that should really never leave village gossip
kiba very seriously said one day that if they get married it would be mr shiba aburame or shiba inuzuka x2 (think mr and mrs taylor lautner) and shino gave him fleas
mirai doesn't know who is who but she does know shiba. shino will let her have that one up until the age of 3
a lot of people just assumed they got married somewhere along the way? anbu delivering messages for kiba sometimes would find shino who's dead on his feet and would receive the message like it's for him. ANBU: are you mr inuzuka? shino who is too tired to correct the joke at this point: yes i am. people call kiba mr aburame in the same vein except kiba takes it with more fanfare
tsume wasn't that happy they eloped without her knowledge but shibi also genuinely doesn't know what's going on and he's not going to ask shino, so they roll with it and have family dinners between the two clans every fortnight and the shiba trio don't register this as anything unusual
im southeast asian and my aunt was a teacher so the spouse of a teacher is also a teacher by association. what this means is that kids also call kiba sensei. inuzuka sensei. shiba sensei. kiba who had never taught in his life after a child incorrectly identified him as married to his best friend and also his first name: yes sensei is here. how can i help you my child
when they do get married they were threatened by the clan elders to actually say kiba (shiba) aburame (he is a second son and the aburames love akamaru) and shino likewise dutifully put (shiba) on his actual legal marriage certificate
