What inspired you to try/create that muse/s:
well , if you’ve been with me long enough then you know that tooru started out as an AU ! o.ikawa t.ooru, where instead of attending s.eijou , he went to s.hiratorizawa ! to be honest , i kind of just wanted to try my hand at writing that kind of thing ? it was the very first time i had made a tumblr rp blog , so i had no idea that people rp different verses of the same character on one blog !! i originally rp’d on deviantart , and it was very commonplace to have different blogs for different verses ... i had over 70 rp blogs on there and most of them were literally the same 2 characters but in different AUs LMAO ... so imagine my surprise when i saw people rp’ing different AUs on one blog ... RP’ing multiple muses on one blog ... !! but i kinda just stayed with my iteration instead of playing canon ! kawa anyway , since i didn’t really see the point in starting over .
as tooru developed more , though , i began to use him as a venting tool because this was a part of my life where i was really depressed . but as time grew on and i eventually made him into an OC , he became a much happier character . he really is my best friend ; he’s been there for me through it all , and even though he’s just fictional , i really owe him a lot for helping me out during rough times .
What is inspiration for that muse/s:
well , currently , a lot of things ... lots of music , japanese culture + religion , and also my own experiences . in general , i have a p.interest board for him , so ... maybe you could say i draw inspiration from that , too ! i also rly enjoy the band MILI . their songs really fit tooru , like ‘ bathtub mermaid ’ . i’ve also been listening to hello , again and am planning on drawing something based on it for him ( + the song’s prequel , “ goodbye ” ) . i mainly tend to daydream while listening to songs , so ... yeah .
as for characters who serve as inspiration for tooru ... well , i think that’s an artist meme , so i might just fill it in in lieu of answering this properly lol ... but two i can think of off the top of my head are leon from f.ire e.mblem e.choes and n.eferpitou from h.xh !

B.NHA AU ... !! i’m hyperfixating sm on that one ... idk , a lot of planning and plotting goes into it , esp since a lot of my mutuals are in the fandom . in particular , i love love love the story i’ve created with @noquirk . i literally cannot envision a more perfect plot for tooru in this verse . heck , it’s literally my main go - to timeline when i draw / write for it . tooru is , quite literally , not very much in this AU without deck .

his canon story , in parallel motion , deals with existentialism and alternate universes . ultimately , it’s a story that serves as a physical manifestation of my own struggle with depression , and while it’s sombre in tone , i want it to tell whoever’s reading it , “ you matter . ” it’s why tooru is placed into so many marginalized groups ; he’s fat and trans and biracial and bi and suffers from bpd + depression + anxiety but he’s a good person through it all ... his story is tragic because he’s not allowed to exist and will be forgotten when he dies , but his existence impacts so many other characters’ lives ... it’s a butterfly effect kind of thing . because you exist , you’ve made so many peoples’ lives better . and i understand it’s rough and i understand depression + sucky real life aspects try to convince you otherwise , but just ... think about it . there’s an alternate universe where , because you don’t exist , something huge was probably impacted . and even on a smaller , more intimate scale --- if you hadn’t existed in another life , then one of your friends might not be here . they might not be as happy as they are now , because you make them happy . life can be awful . but it’s wonderful and beautiful , too . that’s what i want tooru to be to others . someone to look up to and relate to , and someone who tells you , “ it’s okay ! ”
What do you think about character’s design/how do you came up with this:
he’s ... kinda generic LOL mainly cause he’s based off of o.ikawa looks - wise due to his origin ... but part of his looks also derivate from an old ask blog muse i had :
i just really like that bangs - over - one - eye hairstyle ngl ... also i have no idea how / when his hair became maroon - brown since o.ikawa’s hair is chestnut brown , but ... yeah . also have no idea when he gained red eyes HDKJSFS,,,, i find fangs appealing on a character though , so that’s why he has fangs and does the :3c ... honestly i think i kinda just slapped together what i like in a design and put it on him , so even though he may look like an NPC ( lol ) , he’s still appealing in my eyes .

the pairs of shoes strewn in front of the door. the pair of socks that didn’t make it into the sock drawer and simply remained on the ground. the sweater crumpled by the bed. the duvet, twisted at an angle, practically diagonal across the mattress; the sheets pulled the other way, sliding out, inches from brushing the unclean floor. the pillows tossed against the wall, covers wrinkled from where his head lay the night before. the random pile of things he couldn’t even name in the corner by the bathroom door.
he hates the mess.

Machine learning & marketing: 5 tips from Jim Sterne
We were honoured to have DAA co-founder and president Jim Sterne join us at the most recent edition of our Digital Analytics Forum event in Paris where he treated our audience to a riveting talk on machine learning in marketing, the topic of his latest book.
During his presentation (which you can watch below), Jim took us through the rise of AI and the benefits of machine learning for marketers, but also highlighted why the human brain and savvy will always be necessary to complement our computers. And because machine learning has certain particularities to consider, Jim also shared tips on successfully onboarding machine learning into your organisation… catch them below!
The 3 types of machine learning
Before taking any action, it’s important to truly understand what machine learning is and how it can be applied. Jim provided a run-down of the 3 distinct types of machine learning and what they can each contribute:
First, there’s supervised machine learning, where the computer receives a massive quantity of labelled data to train on, returns statistics-driven results, and receives feedback and corrections (hence the “supervised” aspect). Jim sums up supervised learning as: “I know the answer and I’m teaching the machine. I’m giving it lots of labelled data and lots of examples. I explain, and it listens.” Take image classification for instance, where the computer has “seen” thousands of images of, say, dogs, and has “learnt” which set of features constitute a dog.
Then there’s unsupervised learning. Like supervised learning, we have vast amounts of data, but on the contrary, we don’t have the answers to train the computer on what’s true or false. So we pour in all our data and ask the system, “Show me a pattern, something interesting, a correlation or an anomaly,” says Jim. And the machine grants our wishes, highlighting curious correlations and relationships between data like “people buy more online when it’s snowing”. But the pitfall to avoid with unsupervised learning is assuming causality where it doesn’t exist. (Does ice cream cause drowning? Watch Jim’s talk below to find out…)
Lastly, there’s reinforcement learning, where there are no absolute answers – just positive outcomes – and we can reinforce certain results, thereby teaching the machine to optimise. “If the outcome is better, give the machine a numeric reward. If the outcome is worse, give the machine a numeric demerit,” explains Jim. He highlights that for reinforcement learning to successfully optimise outcomes, there are 3 things machines require:
– immense volumes of data
– a very specific goal to achieve
– the agency to act or revise their behaviour after fresh data is fed in
Take a moment to consider the infinite potential of an amazingly powerful computer brain which can wrangle a limitless number of dimensions, combinations and possibilities that we as humans cannot even begin to conceive. Who wouldn’t be excited about integrating machine learning into their marketing strategy?
Jim Sterne’s tips on machine learning for marketing
The combination of man and machine talents can lead to great results, but there are a few important things to keep in mind when onboarding machine learning into your marketing actions. Not only will Jim’s advice help you achieve stronger results, but it will also help ensure your machine learning initiatives maintain buy-in and support from your organisation.
Set clear, specific goals
Forget “raise awareness” or “optimise customer retention” – you must be super specific and narrow with your objectives for machine learning to work toward a real result. Proper examples of a specific goal would be “increasing the number of clicks on my ad banner” or “increasing the number of email opens.” Look at what you want to achieve and break it down into multiple concrete actions that machine learning can help you achieve.
Temper management’s expectations
As seen above, even the machine has a learning curve, so your management shouldn’t expect to see amazing results right off the bat. The machine will start with zero knowledge, experience a rather steep and spectacular learning curve, and will then plateau after results have been optimised.
“Be warned”, notes Jim, “First, [the machine] is a dumb as a rock, then it gets brilliant, and then it just becomes average. So what do you do? Give it a new problem, or fresh data. And then it continues to be an amazing, powerful system.” Be sure to set expectations internally so as not to lose support for your machine learning projects if results seem sub-par at a certain point. And always be thinking about how to iterate on your current project to keep your machine learning systems constantly improving.
Data quality is paramount
If you expect accurate and reliable outcomes from your machine learning projects, you must feed your machines with data that’s equally as complete and trustworthy.
“When your data streams hit the data lake, that is where the magic happens,” says Jim. “If this is all clean, consistent and reliable, then machine learning can come in and help you find interesting things in your data lake.”
But for that magic to happen, “you need a data steward watching each data stream,” he notes, to ensure nothing is amiss with tagging and collection. Indeed, while machine learning can do amazing things with quality data, it cannot evaluate or control the quality of the data it’s being fed – human brains are needed to verify that data is clean, accurate, completely, timely, consistent and without bias. (As an AT Internet customer, you’re already in a prime position thanks to the powerful combination of high-quality analytics data and Data Flow to feed your data lake.)
Start with the right tasks
You might have already dreamt up a vast number of project ideas built on machine learning. But certain tasks are better adapted to your computers than others – Jim suggests favouring tasks that are repetitive in nature and low risk, and which involve large amounts of data, such as ranking, sorting, segmenting, clustering, correlating, segmenting, and anomaly detection – these are all activities where machine learning can beautifully do the heavy lifting.
All that’s left for the analyst to do afterwards is assess the results, determine what looks useful, and continue to explore further. (Take Explorer’s new anomaly detection feature, for example. Powered by machine learning, it alert analysts to suspicious fluctuations which they can then study in more detail.) By allotting the right tasks to machines and humans, both can contribute their talents where they add the most value.
Use your human advantage
Jim’s final piece of advice to was to embrace what makes us different from computers – and what makes us human: our common sense, reason, emotion, empathy and imagination.
“You need to decide what problem we’re going to solve. You need to decide what data is going to be considered. And you need to decide if the output from the machine makes sense,” he says, adding that thanks to our common sense, we’re easily equipped to run “the smell test” – simply looking at something and knowing that it’s bad, won’t work, or is a poor idea. And despite computers’ brilliance in other aspects, this is something they can never learn.
“What happens between your ears is astonishing, and that’s what you should make use of the most,” he reminds us.
“Computers are incredibly fast and accurate… but stupid. Humans are slow and inaccurate… but we are brilliant.” – Jim Sterne
With all the game-changing developments brought by AI, he says it will be more important than ever to combine human and computer intelligence to build our brands and create systems that can interface with other systems (voice assistants, for example). “Be prepared that marketing is going to change wildly,” he says. “It’s going to get really weird!”

In today's Whiteboard Friday, we welcome the brilliant Heather Physioc to expound upon the maturity models she's developed to help you diagnose your client's search maturity and remove blockers to your success.

What up, Moz fans? My name is Heather Physioc. I'm Director of the Discoverability Group at VML. We are in Kansas City. Global ad agency headquartered right in the middle of the map.
Today we're going to talk about how to diagnose the maturity of your SEO client. I don't mean emotional maturity. I mean maturity as it pertains to SEO capabilities, their ability to do the work, as well as their organizational search program maturity. Now a lot of times when a client signs a contract with us, we make the assumption that they're knowledgeable, they're motivated, they're bought in to do the search work.
So we go dumping all these recommendations in their lap, and we're trucking full speed ahead. But then we're surprised when we start hitting blockers and the work doesn't go live. I actually surveyed over 140 of our colleagues in the search industry, and they reported running into blockers, like low prioritization and buy-in for the work, limited technical resources for developers or budgeting for copywriters, low advocacy, high turnover, and any number of different things that stand in the way.
I didn't just ask about the problems. I asked about the solutions, and one of the tools that came out of that was the ability to diagnose the client's maturity. So a maturity model is intended to evaluate an organization's capability to continuously evolve in a practice. The point, the purpose of this is to understand where they stand today, where they want to go, and the steps it's going to take to get there.
The SEO Capabilities matrix
Let's talk about the SEO capabilities first, the technical ability to do the job.
Harmful
On the low end of the scale, a client may be engaging in spammy, outdated, or harmful SEO practices that are doing more harm than good.
Tactical
From there, they may be tactical. They're doing some super basic SEO, think title tags and meta description tags, but nothing earth-shattering is happening here, and it's not very strategic or aligned to brand goals.
Strategic
From there, the brand moves into the strategic phase. They're starting to align the work to goals. They're starting to become a little more search savvy. They're getting beyond the titles and metas, and they're more thorough with the work. While good stuff is happening here, it's not too advanced, and it still tends to be pretty siloed from the other disciplines.
Practice
From there, the organization might move into a practice. Search is starting to become a way of life here. They're getting significantly more advanced in their work. They're starting to connect the dots between those different channels. They're using data in smarter ways to drive their search strategy.
Culture
Then from there, maybe they're at a level of culture for their SEO capabilities. So search here is starting to become a part of their marketing DNA. They're integrating across practices. They're doing cutting edge. They're testing and innovating and improving their SEO implementation, and they're looking for the next big thing. But these groups know that they have to continually evolve as the industry evolves. So we don't just look at their whole SEO program and figure out where the client goes on the map.
✓ Data-driven
We actually break it down into a few pieces. First, data-driven. Is the organization using information and analytics and combining it with other sources even to make really smart marketing decisions?
✓ SEO for content
Next is content. Are they doing any SEO for content at all? Are they implementing some SEO basics, but only during and after publication? Or are they using search data to actually drive their editorial calendar alongside other data inputs, like social listening or web analytics?
✓ Mobility
From there, mobility. Do they have no mobile experience at all, or do they have a fully responsive and technically mobile friendly site, but they're not investing any more in that mobile optimization? Or are they a completely mobile-first mindset? Are they continuously iterating and improving in usability, speed, and content for their mobile users?
✓ Technical ability
Beyond that, we could look at how technically savvy they are. Do they have a lot of broken stuff, or are they on top of monitoring and maintaining their technical health and accessibility?
✓ On-page/off-page SEO
Then some standard SEO best practices here. Are they limited or advanced in on-page SEO, off-page SEO?
✓ Integrating across channels
Are they integrating across channels and not having search live in a silo?
✓ Adopting new technology
Are they adopting new technology as it pertains to search? Some clients have a very high appetite for this, but they chase after the shiny object.
Others have a high appetite and a high tolerance for risk, and they're making hard choices about which new technology to invest in as it pertains to their search program. You may also want to customize this maturity model and include things like local search or international search or e-commerce. But this is a great place to start. So this does a very good job of choosing which projects to begin with for a client, but it doesn't really get to the heart of why our work isn't getting implemented.
The Organizational Search Maturity matrix
I developed a second maturity model, and this one is more traditional and you see it across other industries as well. But this one focuses on the search program inside the organization. This is the squishy organizational stuff.
✓ People
This is people. Do they have the necessary talent within the organization or within their scope? That might not just mean SEOs. That means are they scoping appropriately for content and development needs?
✓ Process
What about process? Are they actually using a defined and continuously improving process for the inclusion of search? Now I don't mean step-by-step best practices for implementing a title tag. This isn't instructions or a tutorial. This is a process for including organic search experts at the right moments in the right projects.
✓ Planning
What about planning? A lot of times we find that clients are doing search very reactively and after the fact. We want to reach a point with an organization where it's preplanned, it's proactively included, and it's always aligned to brand, business, or campaign goals.
✓ Knowledge
Next is knowledge. We know that this industry is complicated. There are a lot of moving pieces. We want to know how knowledgeable is the organization about search. That doesn't necessarily mean how to do SEO, but perhaps the importance or the impact or the outcomes of it. How committed are they to learning more through reading or trainings or conferences? At the very least, the organization they're hiring to do search needs to be extraordinarily knowledgeable about it.
✓ Capacity
Then capacity. Do they have the prioritization within the organization? Are they budgeting appropriately? Do they have the resources and the means and the capacity to get the work done?
Initial
When we've evaluated a client against these criteria, we could find them in an initial phase where the program is very new, they're not doing any search at all...
Repeatable
...to repeatable, meaning they're starting to include it, but it's not super cohesive yet. They're not enforcing the process. They don't have super dedicated resources just yet.
Defined
Up into defined, where they actually are documenting their process. It's continuing to iterate and improve. They're becoming more knowledgeable. They're dedicating more resources. They're prioritizing it better.
Managed
We can move up into managed, where that's continuing to improve even further...
Optimized
...and into optimized. So again, this is where search programs are part of the organization's DNA. It's always included. They are always improving their process. They are maintaining or even increasing the talent that they have dedicated to the work. They're planning it smarter and better than ever before, and they have adequate capacity to keep iterating and growing in their search program.
With that, the steps to complete this process and figure out where your client falls on either of these maturity models, I want to be clear is not a one-sided exercise. This is not a situation where you're just punching numbers into a spreadsheet and the agency is grading the client and our job is done. This needs to be a conversation.
We need to invite stakeholders at multiple levels, both on the client side and on the agency side, or if you're in-house, just multiple levels within the organization, and we should ask for opinions from multiple perspectives to paint a more accurate picture of where the client stands today and agree on the steps that we need to take to move forward. When you do these maturity assessments, this isn't enough.
This is step one. This isn't a finish line. We need to be using this as a springboard for a dialogue to uncover their pain points or the obstacles that they run into, inside their organization, that are going to keep you from getting that work done. We need to have honest and frank conversations about the things we need to clear out of the way to do our best work. With that, I hope that you can try this out.
