Snowbaz & Co Barbie Outfits

I was chatting with a few others in discord and we were all in agreement that Simon and Baz would absolutely be going to see Barbie, and would be bringing Mordelia, Petra, and Sophie along.

But what would they wear?

This is how I’ve spent my job hunting free time over the last few weeks.

Pink and nonsense below the cut.

Petra

I feel like she’s a total horse girl. She spends all of her time thinking about horses and drawing horses and riding horses both real and imaginary. When Baz tells her they’re going to dress up for the movie, Petra is ready with her pink accessories to be Equestrian Barbie. There are a few versions of this Barbie, but I wasn’t that into them. Petra can do better. I asked my horse-riding friends how they would Barbie-fy the standard English riding look, and they said pink accessories. So:

Let’s start with our base equestrian look. White top with pink lining on the collar/cuffs, beige or... whatever color that is for the breeches, and field boots (I hear this is what they are called?). Then we add the pink accessories! (Yes, that is a unicorn on the end of that crop). Hot pink breeches optional. I’m foregoing the riding coat because it’s summer and we just don’t need that extra layer, but it does really pull the look together, and I did find a suuuuuper cute pink one. 

I don’t know anything about riding, especially English riding, so don’t come at me if this doesn’t make any sense (I would like to know how you would Barbie-fy your own riding look, though!).

Sophie

Sophie heard “wear pink” and knew just the dress for the occasion. This was the dress she wore for her most recent birthday party (because they totally have super posh, fancy kid birthdays that require nice new dresses, right?). I’m pretty sure the twins are somewhere around 10 now, and this is definitely something I would have worn as a 10 year old.

My inspiration for Sophie’s look was the 2010 Modern Princess Barbie (left) and the 2011 Cut ‘N Style Princess (right).

Mordelia

I imagine Mordelia goes immediately to a retro look. She’s around 15 at this point and could totally be into makeup and fashion. I like to imagine she’s kind of artsy, and while she’s the perfect age to be in her emo phase (which I would love for her to have), I understand this is not a “thing” anymore among the youths. Either way, I like to think Mordelia is a bit of a chameleon and floats around to whatever style inspires her at the moment. (Am I projecting? Yes. Yes, I am.)

I think she would prefer to go for the original 1959 Barbie with the black and white swimsuit (bodysuit?) and sunglasses, but Baz insists on pink (or Simon... yeah... it’s definitely all Simon). So they compromise on a modern take on the Flower Power era of the 60s and 70s. The dress has the large-scale, brightly colored floral print and miniskirt of the 60s with the bell sleeves more common in the 70s. I used this 1969 P.J. Talking doll for inspiration.

She goes all-out on the makeup with the recently revived and renovated mod eye look (top left) and sort of clumped, thick bottom lashes (bottom right) (there’s got to be a better way to describe that....). And the knee-high white boots, of course. She’s really just an amalgamation of all the most fun trends of the 1960s.

Can you tell I had the most fun with this one?

Simon

I had a really hard time with both of the boys. But here we are. As soon as I saw the 1982 Ken Fashion Jeans, I knew that was my inspiration for Simon. It just felt so right. Though I didn’t use the actual jeans part as the inspiration, I did go with another 80s jean staple: acid wash jeans. And imagine the light pink shirt is actually the most obnoxious hot pink you can think of. 

I like to think Simon already had both of these pieces in his closet. Baz will be ensuring those top buttons stay undone all day, as god intended.

Honorable mention to this shirt that also has a Simon-look-alike for a model (tbh I still think maybe I should pick that one every time I look at it) and this basically mesh shirt.

Baz

The one that I’m sure you’ve all been waiting for that I’m also sure is going to disappoint... Baz. Boy did I struggle with Baz. What would he wear? A suit? More casual? More costume-y? Ultimately I decided casual since everyone else would be casual, it’s summer, and, more importantly, I couldn’t find any hot pink floral suits for men.

Once I narrowed it down to casual, I still couldn’t decide. I didn’t even have a good reference for inspiration. Nothing felt quite Baz.  Honestly, I need help.

I think I’ve settled on this large-scale floral print on the top left that feels like a very Barbie-esque print, but it’s not quite right. It for sure needs to be a little less boxy and a little more tailored like the slightly more classic Bazzy floral shirts below. The cherry blossoms (top right) are pretty and pink, but not quite Barbie and not quite Baz. The bottom left seems the most... typical? Not a bad choice (aside from the fact that Baz absolutely would not shop at Target or Walmart where I found this shirt). The bottom right is a little more bold and has the hot pink, but... I’m just not sure. 

And of course we need a good “Baz, you’re wearing jeans!” moment. Why is there a picture of Trent Crimm/James Lance instead of jeans on the left, you ask? When is a photo of Trent Crimm not relevant to Baz? He’s wearing jeans, isn’t he?

Don’t let the Gareth/Reader tag convince you this story is crack. This story is painfully earnest and made me want to read a hundred more fics with this version of Gareth. Trust me, it’s a good one.

Another friends to lovers, Normal AU with Baz seeking out Gareth’s services. The premise sounds the same but these authors both approached this storyline very differently. In this one, Baz is a bit of a loner who gets taken in by Simon and his friend group. I love an awkward Baz, totally enamored by a popular, magnetic Simon. The first chapter was so fun and I can’t wait to see where this story goes.

This fic is sexy but so fucking tender (just how I like my smut) and sets up a compelling mix with Demi!Simon and an angsty, Baz in crisis, meeting this ray of sunshine at just the right time. Plus, we are absolutely spoiled with gorgeous art in both chapters. I’m very, very into this fic and can’t wait to see where it’s going.

Another friends to lovers Normal AU. Here we have writer!Simon telling his roommate Baz he had a strange sex dream about him the night before. When Baz asks Simon to demonstrate, we see the careful boundaries these two have put around them to keep their mutual attraction at bay quickly crumble. This fic is so sexy, and uses some great food metaphors to sate your hunger. Truly delicious.

Is This the Real Life? Complete, 5.6k, rated T by @captain-aralias

Watford era, canon divergent story in which Baz walks in on Simon practicing to ask Agatha out, he says yes before realizing what really happened, then pretends he was being sarcastic. The boys immediately leave for spring break, and both wonder whether they legit have a boyfriend. This fic takes place mostly while they are apart, trying to figure out what it all means, but man, their tender emotions and blooming self-realizations are so good.

Not all the time, but often enough. Simon and Baz take a shower and Simon gets to hold a lizard, but not necessarily in that order.

The series this starts,"Mouth Shapes,"is probably my favorite post-canon snowbaz universe. it does a really good job of projecting healing & comfort & the home our characters are building, and the whole thing just makes me smile very much. the second in the series, "Licking Silk" has an excellent drinking scene AND an excellent blood drinking scene AND an excellent simpard kiss scene. the whole thing just pulses with warmth and safety and happiness.

What fic are you emotionally attached to?

Oooh that's trickyyyyyy - but ultimately I'd have to say: A Christmas Pitch by @facewithoutheart - I literally love all their works (it is at this point that I looked at who asked the freaking question, and felt a bit stupid - however I stand by my choice). I've always loved a good trashy romance movie, and A Christmas Prince is exactly that. I was so excited when I saw that someone had made a Snowbaz (sorry, #bazbury) version of it!! I think I actually squealed. The movie really got me through quarantine - even though it was so trashy - and then so did the fic, hence the very (positive!) emotional memories linked to it. Plus the fic had a few less plot holes, so, yay!

What fic of your own do you read for comfort?

This one is an easy one: A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes by @nonsensicalollieie (I hope this is actually their tumblr - sorry if it's not, random-person-I've-just-tagged!) I truly adore Disney, and this fic makes me feels so nostalgic. The author picked the best Disney films as well. And I adored the fact that Simon and Baz really felt like teenagers in this fic, I love seeing Baz as the typically female character, without losing any of his... vavavoom. I read it in like a day, and I've reread it like 1 million times since. I also relate to Baz a bit too much in this fic, except I didn't get my prince(ss) charming at the end 😭. PLUS THE REALLY COOL ART!! I LOVED IT - BAZ WAS SO SASSY - HIS FLAIR WAS EVERYTHING

ROTTMNT review / brainrot

Hello, I have now watched the entire first season of Rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtle, and had time to collect my thoughts, and I will start this off by saying: I LOVE IT I love the show, the boys characterisation is amazing. Between the 2003 version (The one I grew up with) and this, I really love it. I remember watching the movie for the first time, and was like “Wow they are different.” But I really love the difference, and Leo is my absolute favorite turtle out of them all, with Donnie being an absolute cutie.  If I had to rank it, I would rank Raph above Donnie, but I love all of them. Now, for my thoughts about some of the villains: MEATSWEATS - 8/10 - very enjoyable Did Meatsweats die??? Did he die??? Because like, I haven’t watched season 2 yet, but the way that one episode ended with the bbq show, and them wanting to eat him, did he die Is he not coming back D: I actuall really enjoyed him and that whole episode with him being besties with Mikey. It was really fun. Meatsweats, as barbaric as he is, was just a fun character. Enjoyable villain to watch.  HYPNO & WARREN - 9/10 - I expected more though Absolute power couple, we only got one episode where they were a power couple though, which I found to be kind of unfortunate that there weren’t more, but I liked that episode. I did expect more though. As someone coming from the movie, where they made an appearance working together in the beginning of the movie, I was expecting them to be a bit of a regular occurence in the show. It would make sense in terms of showing them in the movie, and I expect to see them together again in season 2, but them only making one occurence together in season 1, just didn’t really make sense to me. I love both of them though, Warren is a funny character with his whole: I AM YOUR ARC-NEMESIS >:( He got going on, it’s funny, and hypno is genuinely lovable with his whole personal expression. I love the purple. BIG MAMA - 7/10 - I LOVE HER Ok, I gave her 7/10, but I still absolutely adore her. Her whole way of phrasing her sentences are amazing, and the whole twist with her being a massive spider, incredible. I expect more villany from her in season 2, right now she is kind of there, she was kind of a threat in a few episode, but I expect a little bit more.  BAXTER THE STOCKBOY - 6/10 - His whole ordeal was funny I wasn’t expecting Baxter to be reoccuring, but his whole: Subscribe to me :D Pay the small members fee :D thingy funny, Baxter was neat. DRAXUM - 10/10 - What a bitch boy Ok Ok, hear me out. Draxum’s whole arc was so funny when you think about it’s progression, from: “You’re BEAUTIFUL :’O” To I will destroy you Is objectively so funny, because his whole shift is like “I created you so you would kill humans!” “But we protect the people!” “GASP HOW DARE, I CREATED YOU, IF YOU STAND IN MY WAY I WILL KILL YOU, LOSER MUTANTS” And his side kicks are not to be forgotten, They are likeable, but they didn’t stick as well in the charming meter for me. They are ok, I’d give them a 5/10 THE FOOT CLAN - 10/10 - cuties Now the footclan is amazing, I loved them from their introduction to now. I love Cassandra, I like two foot guys, and I like how both in the movie and in the show, they just have someone they worship. What a great cult. It’s my favorite thing the show does. They don’t just make villains, the villains are also just goofy people with interests such as Lou Jitsu, and Jupiter Jim. It’s just fun. I might talk about the main characters another day, I just really liked the villains, and wanted to talk about them.

You know I had no idea what Eat/Pray/Love was before getting this ask, and I know you meant Snowbaz and not snowball. BUT it is something I'd very much write, so have a taste (wink wink) of it under the cut. (Or read on AO3.)

Crashing Waves (M)

This is not what I had in mind when I planned my trip around the world to find myself again, but I can't say I'm complaining.

Because I've got a cock shoved down my throat, fingers still sticky from the decadent fried pizza Baz made me try for lunch, and I'm forgetting all about sacred cows and temples and bald men in orange tunics. (I'm mixing some things up, aren't I?)

It turns out I don't need to visit India to explore my way through spirituality and nirvana. (Did I get it right this time?) I don't even need to get to Rome and kneel in the middle of Piazza San Pietro under the giant screen showing the Pope's ramblings, or wander into the first local church I find—there is one behind every corner, it wouldn't be a difficult quest—and ask the priest to show me the light.

Because here, kneeling on the floor of a little house a hundred metres from the sea, my stomach so full of pastiera and babà that I'm not sure I can let Baz come in my mouth and then swallow, I feel closer than ever to finding my religion.

If I died here, with the fingers of an Italian man gripping my curls to push my nose deeper against the thick hair at the base of his cock, and the promise of more Neapolitan cuisine for dinner, and more sex after that, I'd be pretty confident about my chances of heading straight to Heaven—or at least to a version of Heaven where I can be held by strong, tanned biceps, and twist my pointer around wavy, raven hair, and lose myself in the grey ocean of smiling eyes as I twirl my fork in a plate of spaghetti alle vongole and make a mess of myself because I'm too busy comparing the shades of his irises to the actual sea lapping below this terrace.

I'm not even sure how I ended up here—how a god descending from whatever the Latin version of Mount Olympus was could look at me, a sad, pale boy from the land of endless rain, and decide I was worth his time, and his cooking, and sucking his cock.

But I guess this was the goal—leave England, leave my empty flat where even the sound of my laughter at stupid TikToks felt pathetic, and travel to Italy, and India, and Indonesia (I may have planned my trip Googling foreign countries in alphabetical order) to find food, religion, love, and maybe something in between.

As it appears, I didn't have to go past my first stop. I know it when Baz tugs at my hair to warn me and I let him come in my mouth. I know when he allows me to drag him to the floor, next to me, and he opens his lips to my kiss, and licks the inside of my cheeks to swallow his own come. (I am really too full to do it, though even his spunk tastes like summer, and new beginnings, and the salt on one's skin after an afternoon in the sea.)

I know it when he takes my hand, and takes me to his bed, and undresses me as if I were a painting and he was uncovering every detail with his artist's eye. I know it when he traces the planes of my face with his calloused fingers, and whispers to me words I don't understand, but feel like a promise of love pressed on every inch of my skin.

I know it when he takes me in his hand, and I feel like poetry unraveling in flower gardens. I know it when he laughs, and the sound of it buries itself into my flesh along with the sound of the waves, of busy restaurants smelling of fish and sea, of hurried steps on cobblestone, of violinists playing love ballads at the corners of narrow alleys.

I know it when he guides my fingers to his back, when he nods as I move on the sheets to taste his arse with my tongue, when he looks at me like I could fit in a museum but he wouldn't like it because it would mean I wouldn't be a secret just for his eyes.

I know it when we lie next to each other, and he tells me stories of mermaids, and red horn-shaped pendants against bad luck, and witches living on volcanoes, and puppets, and dances whose names sound like dangerous spiders.

I know it when he looks at me, and he tells me Faresti riscoprire il senso della bellezza anche al più disilluso, and for the first time in a lifetime, seagulls gliding out of the window, I can breathe.

Medieval History AU

For my piece for the medieval era, I took inspiration from illuminated manuscripts.

I want to first say a huge thank you to @bazzybelle​ for organizing this event and also for just being a really great human. ILY! Despite the fact that I of course left everything to the last minute, I have had a blast working on my two posts and can’t wait until I have time to actually look at what everyone else has done.

About the artwork:

This is a haphazardly researched piece at best.

I initially planned to simply do a group drawing, showing the gang dressed appropriately for their places in my medieval AU. I had that sketch sitting around for months and never felt inspired. Then I started to think about how I could adapt my arsenal of art supplies to give the effect of something more suited to the time periods. And then I thought about a lovely comment that someone made on one of my drawings, that it reminded them of an illuminated manuscript. And then the book art nerd in me was activated. Thus, I spent the next week pulling references from various illuminated manuscripts that have made it online in some form or another over the years. Next came the design. I wanted to find a way to still include the whole group, but a simple line-up no longer made sense. I wanted to make SnowBaz the focal point, for obvious reasons, but I found a way to include the others in insets, as some full page illuminated manuscripts depicted smaller scenes around a central idea.

I knew that I had to include at least one dragon for Simon and somehow reference Baz's vampirism. Monsters appear all over illuminated manuscripts, after all, and I saw no reason why they shouldn't be in mine. Vampires in medieval folklore were different to the way we think of them now; they weren't living people who turned into blood drinking creatures, but rather reanimated corpses. These revenants are usually depicted as some variation on a rotting corpse or skeleton. I decided to stick with our modern understanding of vampirism, because I'm not wholly sold on the zombie thing. A skull and some rats chilling around it probably gets the point across, and ties in Baz's years in the Catacombs, which definitely still exist in this AU. Also, I see medieval Baz as a minor feudal lord of some kind, which plays into the classic vampire metaphor. Simon is a former knight errant who gave up his questing days once he faced the reality that perhaps he wasn't all that different from the monsters he hunted.

The vessel at their feet, which sits over flames, is a crucible. Because of course I was going to include a crucible in my medieval AU. The crucible is an ongoing metaphor in Simon and Baz's story, and I wanted to carry that motif into my piece, too. I based the shape off a couple different depictions I found that related specifically to alchemy. Alchemy is all about transmutation, rather fitting for two half monsters who continuously challenge the roles they've been assigned. (One of the crucible drawings I found even had a tiny dragon looking down the spout and blowing fire into the vessel!)

The alchemy theme continues to the top right corner, with a green lion eating the sun. This is a very common image in alchemical texts, a metaphor for vitriol purifying matter, which would then leave behind gold. Next to the green lion is Agatha, who finds far more to interest her in making friends with unicorns than in the attentions of any courtly suitors. The larger panel in the center shows the castle, the hub of medieval life, inspired by the look of Watford as depicted in the map at the end of Carry On. This version of Watford is also protected by a moat filled with merwolves, because they are exactly the sort of unholy beast that would appear in the marginalia of an illuminated manuscript. (Maybe the Mage got the idea of the merwolves from one of the "four-hundred-year-old texts" he dripped gravy on.) Stars fill the sky, because we all know how important those are. On the castle's other side is Penelope, bent over a parchment in a room filled with thick books, living her best scholarly life, now that she's retired from life as Simon's shield bearer. She and Shepard are both modeling the latest trend in eyeglasses, which is to say, the only trend, because that was cutting edge technology back in the day. (Would either one of them have had access to that kind of fancy tech in their respective positions? Idk, but they have unicorns, and flying sheep, and merwolves, and dragons, so let them see is all I'm saying.) Shepard is, if you couldn't guess, a shepherd, because I had to. But he's still a nomad at heart, and this new flock was acquired in a rather secretive deal during his last adventure. Lastly, the slogans on either side of Simon and Baz are the Google Translate Latin equivalents of: "Magic separates us from the world. Let nothing separate us from each other" and "Light a match inside your heart, then blow on the tinder." (If you can actually read my writing, and you actually know Latin, and these aren't correct, just pretend that they are.)

Illuminated manuscripts were usually embellished with gold leaf, and my budget version is metallic gold marker, which I used sparingly throughout the piece for fire and other objects of note (though it's probably hard to see in the scan).

for anyone waiting for the next chapter of my highwayman fic, i have good news and bad news. the good news is that i am working on a highwayman story. the bad news is it isn’t the snowbaz fic.

it’s the story i had in mind that i eventually decided to turn into the fic. the very general premise is the same- a struggling innkeeper meets a highway robber, they get into shenanigans fall in love, somebody maybe dies. but the characters are very different, and so the plots are, too.

and so today’s offering is from the original story version. nothing of the sort will appear in the snowbaz fic. this is the first meeting between the protagonists, from the perspective of the innkeeper, Eliza. she believes the highwayman is, well, a man, but she isn’t.

“Is that what this is? Pride?”

“It’s the principle of stealing things you don’t even want or need. The tea will be cold and bitter without a pot to heat it in. Now…” I once again try to look unbothered, pulling myself up to my full five feet of height, “let me past, I’m running late.”

“Not until you give me the tea.”

“No!”

“Are you willing to die for it?” His words should feel threatening, but this argument is so absurd, I feel like we’re both on the brink of laughter. I think I see his lips twitch, suppressing a smile.

“Honestly? Yes! I stand by my principles! You can have my purse and my hat, but I would rather take a bullet than buckle to the demands of such an insecure thief, he would rather kill someone than make his own tea.”

And then he does laugh. It’s a mellow sound, unguarded and higher than his voice.

“Go.” He shakes his head.

“I bet your pardon?”

“Go. Just leave. Take your tea and your purse and your ridiculous hat. Just get out of my sight.”

“My hat is actually very fashionable.” I retort, but I mount my horse again and set off at a trot. The man and I maintain eye contact as I approach and pass him, and I’m startled by the fire behind his grey eyes.

3. Character you relate to the most

Oops— I already answered this, kinda. I relate to them in different ways: I relate a lot to WS Simon because he has abandonment issues and “kid who was told he was extraordinary and then grew up to be ordinary” issues. We also both have a “fix all the things for everyone” complex, too.

Baz — It took me a while to get into Baz’s head, but I would say, I relate to him because of his intense emotional world and tendency to see the world through an intensely romantic/tragic lens. But also he’s a Pisces. and I’d never do that like a Pisces does. (Sorry, not sorry.)

4. Which character would you like to go to lunch with?

SHEPARD obviously. I don’t feel the need to elaborate.

5. Favourite non-Snowbaz ship

Ooh! Probably Lamb/Baz or Simon/Shep or just...literally anything. Like, I will read anything as long as it’s well written. The weirder the better. (Within...legal and moral limits.) in my other fandoms I’ve been a big multishipper and there’s not a lot of options for that in CO - which is fine - but wholeheartedly support rarepairs :D

6. Favourite non-romantic OTP

So, obviously Simon/Penny and Baz/Penny are great ones, but I think the nearest & dearest to my heart is Simon/Agatha. The kind of siblings/unwillingly dating/weird exes dynamic and the way they both shaped each other’s lives is just so interesting. And while Simon & Penny are closer, Agatha and Simon represent their aspirational selves to one another. And the way that they were both tied to one another along with their gender roles/places in society and both broke away at the same time is just...mwah

7. Favourite Baz outfit

I honestly dress kinda like Baz. Anything involving a printed silk shirt or a floral brocade suit, so like, all of them? I love WS Baz, his fashion sense is so thoughtful yet fun. He’s so expressive with it — in the sense of both being guarded, being sexy, and playing with masculinity/femininity.

8. How do you feel about Wayward Son?

In case it wasn’t obvious, I absolutely love it. I mean, from a writing/narrative standpoint, I don’t think it’s the most elegant or engaging book ever written, but it’s just so raw and fresh. I don’t see many examples of an author trying to do what Rainbow did, which is build a complex emotional AND plot-driven story with so many characters and so much lore. I’m very excited for AWTWB.

9. Favourite scene from Carry On, besides Chapter 61

I like what the book does/sets up overall. Honestly probably the first scene, where Simon walks to the bus stop & takes the train and just thinks about his life and makes lists -- I love Simon. I know Rainbow said she thinks that bit is boring, but it honestly says so much about his character in a short time. (and he’s an extremely complex character!) Also, Baz’s dramatic entrance. Also, the chapter where Baz says “and I’m hopelessly in love with him” because it’s just so dramatic, and it comes out of nowhere

10. Favourite scene from Wayward Son, besides Chapter 41

Baz and Lamb’s journey across the Strip - vampire lore, jealous Simon, Baz getting to be his own character— it’s beautiful.

11. Remind us about something in canon readers might have forgotten about

Ahahaha um. Simon says he thinks Baz’s cousin Marcus is fit. That’s pretty funny.

12. What are your hopes and fears for Any Way the Wind Blows?

I don’t have any hopes because I don’t want to be disappointed - and that’s not a cynical thing, I just want to go into it with an open mind. (I’ll take a break from fandom and reread the books beforehand so I’m (more of) a blank slate) I guess just...interesting emotional journeys, whatever that ends up being. There’s a lot that Rainbow has to do in the book and I don’t think any one person could get through all of it -- that’s why we have fanfiction.

Fears? I don’t know. I think just...the series ending. Even though I’ve been in fandom for less than a year I just really love this fandom & the thought of that kind of eroding away is sad. But also I don’t think that will happen immediately, and change is a part of life. I’ve never related as much to Cath as I do now :’)

13. An unpopular/cracky opinion you hold

unpopular: Lamb is the best character; I don’t want Simon to get his magic back; both Simon and Baz should have other romantic options.

14. Something from your head fanon

Hmmmmmmm well. Just mean things about Baz really. Like that he’s weird looking, not that great at football, and actually has kind of garish fashion sense. (which is a self-roast as well - see above.) I just feel like Simon/fandom put him on a pedestal, and Simon’s an unreliable narrator re: Baz anyway. So I like the idea that Baz is this average looking kinda strange nerdy guy who is everything Simon has ever wanted in life.

And before you tell me that Baz was hot at Watford and Agatha was into him, have you ever been to a tiny boarding school? Standards get weird 😂😂😂 and Terry being into him — come on. The guy’s a violent pervert.

also - back to Watford being a tiny school. Baz doesn’t have much competition to be the star of the football team. (also, does anyone except Simon even think that he is?)

Any potions-esque subject because I loved chemistry lab. Latin because I loved Latin in school. Uhhhh I don’t like history class, so not that — maybe a literature course focused on the derivation of spells.

19. What would your magical implement be?

Ooh! This is a good one. I’d like to think it would be a weird body piercing. Or a belt a la Gareth. Maybe some kind of traditional south Asian jewelry, like a nose chain or mang-tikka or something. maybe a hat. like, imagine your magical instrument being a fedora and you just have to...wear a fedora all the time.

Hm. Kiss it better? Candle in the wind?I should try to think of a non-horny one. honestly they’re all so cool and clever - I love the magic system in CO/WS.

I read fangirl & the pages at the end mentioned carry on, so I read that, and enjoyed it but I wasn’t obsessed. Then I read WS spring 2020, reread it a bunch of times, reread CO, freaked out about the cliffhanger/cool vampire stuff/unresolved sexual tension, had pandemic cabin fever, got on AO3, and the rest is history.

As @annabellelux knows, I wrote my first (published) fanfic after reading her amazing fic Drop The Game. and the first fanfic I read was @captain-aralias’ Greener Grass. I was so obsessed that about a month later, I searched through the AO3 tags for it, because I couldn’t remember the title or author but kept thinking about it.

Favorite Fics: Drarry Edition

Like I mentioned last time, reading has been a big comfort to me with all this craziness and sheltering at home, so I want to pay it forward and send love to some of the writers whose work has been brightening my quarantine. Thanks, guys!

For this list, we’re leaving the MCU for a while and heading over to the Wizarding World. I liked Harry Potter when it came out, but I never really read much fanfic until I realized a couple of years ago how much a redeemed Draco fit into the redemption trope that I loved in Harringrove, LoVe, SnowBaz, and other fandoms and ships. Once I started perusing the fics out there, I realized that one of the strengths of this fandom is the length and quality of the stories. I love stories that are a meal, and Drarry provides so many!

As I’ve gotten into the ship (so many years late, lol), these are my top 10 favorites.

dirtynumbangelboy by @magpiefngrl

This is probably the Drarry fic that I most enjoy. I come back to it fairly often when I need just a good read in the HP world. Fake dating is one of my absolute favorite tropes, which made this one an automatic win for me, but it’s written with such heart. I really, really love Draco in this fic. His uni studies and his flat being so different from the diffident image he projects. This is also probably the best Astoria I’ve ever read. Also--Jam Today! Read it now!

Do It All Over Again by DracoWillHearAboutThis

I only discovered this series earlier this year, and I’ve already read it at least three times from beginning to end. It’s a re-telling of the original series starting from Book 1. Draco sends himself a letter from the future basically saying that his dad is wrong, and he needs to give up his pure blood ideals and befriend Harry, then--boom--the Golden Trio’s adventures all happen with Draco in tow (and eventual romance, of course). The plot is fairly similar to the actual series, but I am there for the angst and the character growth. Narcissa kicks ass in this ‘verse, and Draco/Hermionie as besties is a treat! Book 4 and Book 6 are both amazing. And her titles are hilarious. This is the only series on my list that is still a WIP, but there’s plenty to read. Books 1 - 6 are complete, and a new chapter for 7 comes out every two weeks. It’s a safe bet so far, and it’s so good--why wait?

A Secondary Education by Thunderbird587

In this fic, Draco takes a job as Potions Professor at Hogwarts after getting divorced under horrible circumstances and renews his acquaintance with Harry, who is the DADA Professor. It’s got a bisexual awakening, and manages to combine friends with benefits with some supreme pining. Like a whole pine forest. Thunderbird587′s Draco POV is so fleshed out, and yet it also lets us see how Harry is pining, even when Draco himself doesn’t. Plus, at over 200K, it is long enough to get lost in for ages, which is perfect right about now. And when you finish the main fic, there are three other ancillary fics, two in Harry’s POV that take place during the main one. The cufflinks one is my favorite, but the writing is so good that I even thoroughly enjoyed the third sub-fic that fleshed out an OC. So, so worth the read--all of it!

The Foundations!verse by Saras_Girl

All of the fics by Saras_Girl are great. You can’t go wrong with any of them. But Reparations, Foundations, and all the little one-shots after are my favorite. It honestly surprised me at first, because alcoholism is a trigger for me, but this fic actually helped me realize that it’s the addiction part, the fall to rock bottom that triggers me. Recovery stories are different. And, I guess, this one is a bit different in that, though it has plenty of characters recovering, Draco himself is actually in a healthy place and facilitating recovery without relapsing. Harry is a Healer in this one, which is not the usual, and I quite enjoy his other relationships in this ‘verse, as well. He, Ron, and Hermione’s friendship is great in this one (their pub nights crack me up), but I also really like Harry’s friends at St. Mungo’s. My second favorite Terry Boot ever, and two awesome OC chicks. And the process of Drarry going from can’t stand each other to in love is slow and prickly and yet really believable. Oh, and Harry and Narcissa’s relationship in this one is just fabulous.

Golden Age by zeitgeistic (faire_weather)

The Hufflepuff in me was bound to fall in love with this fic. I really enjoy Eighth Year fics, especially the ones that embrace inter-house unity (shouldn’t have taken them a war to see the need for that!). This one takes it to a new level when everyone in... I think it was 6th - 8th years were resorted at the welcome feast, and the whole 8th year dynamic is shaken up. Harry, Draco and Neville become Hufflepuffs; Hermione and Pansy become Ravenclaws; Ginny becomes a Slytherin; and somehow Ron and Blaise are the ones who stay in their houses because the hat thinks they are basically the uber Gryffindor and Slytherin. But with the rest of them, we get to see them embrace other facets of their personalities, which is super interesting. And then, after the resorting, we find out that Hufflepuffs have a whole different world going on that basically no one outside their house knows about, and that world is brilliant. Even Hufflepuff food in the Great Hall is different! Everyone would enjoy this story, I think, but if you are a ‘Puff, you really, truly should not miss it. And if you like this one, check out some of zeitgeistic’s other works. Her world building is fabulous.

Life skills outside the curriculum by Endrina

In this fic, Harry gets fed up with the Dursleys before his 11th birthday and runs away before he gets his Hogwarts letter. He ends up on the streets and somehow embraces this kind of instinctual magic that is really fascinating. A few years later, Draco runs away rather than get involved more closely with the Dark Lord, and of course they meet up. This whole fic is super compelling. Harry’s world view and the way people gravitate toward him even without chosen one status. Also, this fic has one of my favorite versions of Remus and Sirius ever. I really wish there was a part two that went in depth on everything that happened after the end of this one, but even on its own it is so worth the read. And everything is wrapped up. I’m just greedy and would’ve loved more. :-)

A Convenient Impracticality by @firethesound

This fic combines friends with benefits and fake dating into a really enjoyable story. Harry is so oblivious, but it all works out in the end. And Draco is a secret mastermind, but in a good way. So is Hermione. Unlike some of the other, angstier stories on my list, this one is so fun, and I love it. And if you like it, check out more of firethesound’s work, as well. It’s worth it!

And then, back on the angst train, lol. Soulmates, red string of fate, rejected bond = terminal disease. Whew! There’s a lot to unpack in this one, but after I read it, I never forgot it. I read a lot of fic in a lot of fandoms, and I always know a story is going to become a favorite if it stands out so much that I remember it later and think about it. That surely happened here.

This is one of the first fics I read on my first Drarry binge, and I’ve always remembered it. Just like I love Eighth Year and Hogwarts professor fics, I also love fics where they have really unexpected jobs--pretty much anything other than Aurors. In this one, Harry is an artist/photographer and Draco is an up-and-coming rock star. The music and art, the creativity is important in this fic, but it also really looks at Draco’s recovery after the war in ways I haven’t read since, and I’m also a sucker for our favorite characters actually addressing and recovering from their trauma. 

Boom Clap (The Sound of My Heart) by @femmequixotic and noeon (noe)

This fic takes the Eighth Year trope to the next level. Draco, Harry, Hermione, and some other faves are teaching fellows at Hogwarts. Junior professors, kind of. It read like if the HP crew went to college. And, of course, Draco and Harry fall in love along the way, but not without much angst and obliviousness. I really enjoy the Draco POV in this. His worries and anxieties feel so real for that stage in his life, but amped up because of the past. This was one I read, never forgot, and then had to go back and find so i could read it again.

So, those are my top 10, but there is lots of other good Drarry out there--both from these authors and all the others in the ship and the fandom. Thanks for all the writing you guys do.

#4: My “Golden” AU

I don’t know what EXACTLY to put here since I haven’t worked a lot into it but it’s one of my favorite fanfiction concepts so far and I’m SO excited to work on it next year !!! It’s a Snowbaz secret relationship Normal AU where they’re planning on getting engaged and having a handfasting BUT they need to come out to people and it’s gonna be MESSY . it’s very fluffy and domestic, I just love it so much ! Also: cat dad Simon (Baz too, but like . CAT DAD SIMON !!!!!)

Might seem kind of stupid but this year I really embraced my “enjoy whatever you feel like enjoying however you want and don’t give a fuck about what anybody else has to say” vibes and if there’s a movie I love it’s Fantastic Mr Fox. Kristofferson is 100% my comfort character and it was really fun to make headcanons and pick scenes and listen to Kristofferson’s Theme over and over again !!

The third digital version (named “Fiona losing her shit”) was heavily influenced by what in my mind is Fiona reacting to Baz being chaotic gay, AKA this line:

So poetic. I love it. And her !!!!! I love her !!!!!

THIS !!!!! THIS AU !!!!!!! Gods gods GODS I love it SO MUCH !!!!!!!! I only wrote the basics for the scenes I have planned in portuguese so I’m not gonna share any quotes yet but GODSSS DYWMD literally my favorite thing EVER from all my fanfiction works SERIOUSLY I love it so much GODS !!!!! DYWMD is a snowbaz fake dating / pretend relationship Normal AU with a side of rivals to friends to fake boyfriends to lovers, happy aro lesbian Agatha, Baz & Penny’s friendship, Lucy & Simon’s mother/son relationship and many many other concepts I enjoy deeply. Ugh seriously I love it so much !!!!! I’m SO excited to actually write it and post it omgs

AWTWB - thoughts

I have just finished Any Way The Wind Blows and I just need to let these thoughts out of my mind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 

SPOILERS ALERT. THERE WILL BE A LOT OF SPOILERS

1. Snowbaz

YES a lot of romance, its a 61 on a scale of 1-10. They finally communicate with each other im crying. (I really hate them not communicating in Wayward Son...) But rr didn’t rush it. They had two or three proper arguments, some time off between argument for them to think, and then lots of talking afterwards to make up. AWTWB is truely a book about healing. I like how they are trying, trying and trying. 

2. Penelope and Shepard

Wait what is their shipname? Pennypard????? Shepny? When reading Wayward Son i was afraid that rr will make them kiss within that book. Sure there is chemistry but it would be too rush. Penny needs time. She is not the type to fall in love at first sight. I like the pacing in this book. I think the relationship between Penny and Shepard is very well-written in AWTWB.

Penny is SO lost in Wayward Son. I don’t know if rr intended to do this, but Penny is not Penny in Wayward Son. She lost her personality completely. How could she NOT know that American states are as big as France? How could she thought that a 3-hours drive can bring them from Chicago to California??? How could she go to America without serious planning and research beforehand? Wayward Son Penny is not the Penny I know, and I am soooo happy that the Penny I know comes back in AWTWB. 

3. Agatha and Goats

I used to hate Agatha in Carry On and Wayward Son. Her personality back then was “a damsel in distress who doesn’t want to be a damsel in distress, but still is a damsel in distress”. Actually I did like Agatha with Ginger (is her name Ginger? Agatha’s Normal friend?) in Wayward Son, and I KNOW THAT RR WILL MAKE HER FALL IN LOVE WITH A GIRL. (I have really good sixth sense:) )

I think rr forgets that Agatha liked horses though. She can just causally mention this in AWTWB, like “I have always like animals more then people. When I was younger I used to spend a lot of time with horses” (something like this). 

I really like Agatha taking care of the goats though. I like the whole thing with goats. It now makes sense how important Ebb is, like Ebb isn’t just the Carry On version of Hagrid. I love this part so much. And mAgiCAl fLyiNG gOATs?????? I LOVE THIS IDEA. 

AWTWB is so much better then I expected. (To be frank my expectations were low though. I made myself lower the expectations after reading Wayward Son) There are so many issues and problems created through out the series, I still can’t believe rr found a way to address every single one. This is the best ending any series can have.
