The Harassment of Billy Hargrove fans #5

I have taken screenshots to reference and prove the behavior I critic but I have gotten rid of all identifying content as to avoid further harassment. Please don’t go out looking to harass anyone. Let me know if I need to add any warnings this is a somewhat serious, heavy, and layered discussion. We are talking about how humans connect to fiction here so it’s bound to be complicated.

These post are degrading towards Billy fans. Yes, they are degrading! The creators are making fun of people for not interpreting or seeing media the way they see it and in turn they are ostracizing and making fun of a big part of the fan base. who are real life people might I add.

The first post is making fun of people who don’t think Billy is racist because two people automatically interpret him as such🤷🏿‍♀️ honestly I don’t get the logic but whatever 👏🏿go 👏🏿off👏🏿 bestie 👏🏿

The second post is making fun of Billy fans who know he is abusive but believe Billy can change for the better. Why do that, maybe I’m interpreting it wrong?

And I would just like to point out in the real world racists don’t have to be out right in their racism to be racist... stranger things isn’t the real world… when something is not explicit it’s up to interpretation and even then nobody has to give a fuck about cannon when they reimagine a character.

I call the first post degrading because this is a vague post made by the same person who talked shit about my mama😃. they posted it on their blog and it’s clearly about me (cuz I'm nosy I noticed).

They literally say they don’t care like at all that I got abused by my mom as a child. Amazing 👏🏿 go 👏🏿off 👏🏿 bestie👏🏿

I might just be to nice but I do kind of think my response was kind of mean but I’m not gonna apologize because they don’t care that I was abused as a child.

This is degrading I’m not even gonna explain it🤦🏿‍♀️

I come to tumblr to get away and feel okay in myself after a long day of college, anticapitalistic organizing, learning a new language, healing from trauma, and etc. I’m asking kindly that if you see this post please don’t engage in the behavior I critic in it because you would be creating a toxic environment for marginalized community members who can see them selves in Billy’s story arc (even though it is flawed). I’m not trying to ruining anyone’s day I just want a healthy and respectful environment to enjoy the media I enjoy. Maybe I’m reading 2 much into this. Maybe I’m stupid for wanting tumblr to be less toxic.

I recognize that online harassment is an issue in all fandoms and it’s a wider systemic flaw with the internet at large so this 5 part series isn’t gonna stop this issue. I just wanted to do my part to advocate for a healthier stranger things fandom. But oh well if my efforts are useless because the Billy Hargrove fans out there still have each other 🫂. I want the Billy fans on tumblr to know you can get things wrong /make mistakes in other situations and that’s okay. On the other hand, don’t let anyone tell you you’re wrong for liking Billy. I hope I gave someone the tools to be more confident in their “cringe” hyper fixation.

Go live a great life or whatever and enjoy yourself. Thanks 4 reading if you we’re able to get through all the Drama. If you’re a Billy fan and anyone ever gives you heat let me know and I’ll try my best to respectfully defend your personhood if I’m able.

I'm sorry but the "content creators are not your parents and owe you nothing, not even a breakdown on why their content isn't problematic" is fucking shitty, if someone has done something that's actually problematic and someone calls them out, the attitude of "I owe you nothing" or "if you don't like it don't listen" is extremely childish and immature to have. this is not an accusation directed to you or anything, it's just that point really bugs me

ooh hello, my first ask disagreement!

from the viewpoint of both a creator (ex creator, more like) and someone who doesn’t create at all / consumer, in multiple fandoms, yes there are genuinely ‘problematic’ creators out there who mess up and should acknowledge it and accept when they’ve caused discomfort or offence, who are not above scrutiny, i agree with you. at the same time, it is also true that those who clash with creators, and those people’s methods, are equally not above scrutiny. there haven’t been enough examples in this fandom (or any other) of people who approached calling out ‘problematic’ creators maturely or constructively (ie without anonymous trolling/hate, death threats, libel campaigns and attempted ostracism). however much it isn’t what they realise or intend, and however much there are some out there who try to go about it maturely, only the sheltered would deny that the libel and the screaming are the majority of what happens with most discourse. i’ve never seen discourse that ended with any happy lot, positive change or achieved goal, so what’s the point? the intent doesn’t always justify the means. especially if it’s trying to prevent destructive behaviour through... destructive behaviour.

beyond the above, you’re gonna have to put your name to your take in my dms or non-anon asking me if you really do want to discuss it. i’m not a discourse blog, one reblog with one tag doesn’t change that. and of course the other option if you don’t want to dm or non-anon ask is to unfollow me: it’s clear we have very different stances on the issue of responsibility for oneself in fandoms, which both of us are equally entitled to, and it’s unlikely we’ll change each other’s minds. (i don’t mean this any more accusingly than you do, and however much we disagree i hope you have a good day)
