hello hi!!! grfhvhghr i am in love with your artwork so much you cant believe-- i wanna ask if you have any tips on how you lineart and colourpick?? no pressure to answer tho, have a great day/night!! again, love your art <33
hi!! thank you for your kind words!! since i got asked about these a lot, im answering this for all the other ask asking about lineart and colour tips too! You can see some previous post here.
also i could only give out tips that work for my drawing style - which is heavy lineart / colours pop up the line (believe it or not it's American comic book style. ppl cant understand why my art doesnt really look like usual anime/ Asian webtoon style, even though it is still clearly anime / Asian webtoon style, but when i told them it's because im drawing these by studying American comics, no one believes it either lmao.
i do study but i do my own things too, so most of my art inspo is really unexpected to ppl, but they r really where i learn things from, cuz i dont even go to art school TT_TT).
Tumblr media
Changing the brush size will help you achieve thick/thin lines better without having to put pressure on your wrists. Keep your hold relaxed and let bigger brush size give you the thick strokes.
I like messy sketch, to me the sketch is just an outline shape to fill details in when i do the line, it also gives more freedom to wriggle as i draw! cuz i dont really plan out everything from the start, just wing it as i go, so a lot of my work is actually very spontaneous.
that leads to this point: when you do the lineart you should start deciding which colour style you want from it to adjust the details amount. the ink shadow blocks in my art aren't there randomly, i adjust them to best complement the shape language and colours.
for piece where i want the line/shadow to...idk hit (?), the colours are almost flat with textured brush adding depth to them, so the inking is the shading, thus there are more details in the lineart / ink blocks.
Tumblr media
for the video above and piece like this where i want the colours to be clear and pop out, the use of ink blocks are minimized and i do the shading during colouring process. but! the ink blocks can still make some places pop very nicely! just use in moderation!
Tumblr media
when doing the base it's good to keep the colour on the left side of the colour wheel (low saturation), but as you do shading and lighting, try to spread out evenly so it won't look washed out.
toggle around with hue and saturation slider as you go! the key is always adjusting! you're making hundreds of decisions at once, being conscious of your choice in why a line or a colour should be in a certain way will help improve your process a lot! (i think you can tell which art i turned off my brain and just draw for stress relief ........ which is also a valid way to draw and sometimes the result might surprise you! but for more serious stuffs i try to be aware of most of the move i make. it's problem solving, yeah?)
i find that one way to keep your art from appearing too...yellow in the end (which is sth that haunted my ass for a long while) is always aim for cold tone, so if you accidentally make it warm either way in the end it won't be too warm (and yellow )
well that's all the stuffs i can think on top of my head. sorry i can't give more advice on colour picking cuz it's sth i don't really know how to give advice on???? i think my colours now are still pretty lame haha........ if there are still any questions i'd gladly answer within my ability, though im very slow to answer ask ( i do read and be happy at all of them tho!)

17 x roses | joel x reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media
prompt: roses pairing: joel miller x f!reader word count: 888 notes: fluff, no outbreak, no y/n, no reader description, reader has a kid summary: I don't know? You help Joel choose flowers not expecting to run into him again.
x. masterlist
Tumblr media
Joel looked around at the vast selection of flowers and it wasn't difficult for him to get overwhelmed with the choice in front of him. He was grateful he’d skipped on the florist down the street because if the grocery store was giving him this much of an issue, he couldn’t imagine what that experience would be like.
Before he could debate on the merits of calling Tommy for advice he heard someone clear their throat behind him, “Excuse me, if I could.”
“Oh, shoot, sorry,” he apologized profusely stepping out of your way.
You were there, trying to reach for a bouquet of tulips that were just a bit too high for comfort. Noticing your struggle, Joel's initial embarrassment from blocking the aisle quickly transformed into a helpful gesture. “Let me get that for you,” he offered, retrieving the bouquet with ease.
“Thanks,” you replied once the bouquet was stashed safely in your cart.
You were about to turn away and carry on with your grocery shop when you noticed the look of confusion on his face as he turned back to surveying the buckets of flowers.
“Can I offer some help in return?” you smiled as Joel’s head whipped to look at you, the look of desperation on his face wasn’t missed.
“Could you?” he laughed, relief on his face, “I have no clue.”
“Well,” you started, taking a step closer to the sea of flowers, “you really can't go wrong with roses. They're classic for a reason.”
Joel looked at the roses, then at you, a spark of interest lighting up his eyes. “I guess you can't argue with classics,” he conceded, “thank you.” the half smile he gave you made you weak at the knees but before anything could happen your phone rang and you groaned when you saw who it was calling.
“Best of luck,” you wished him as you held your phone up in show of your reason for leaving as you hurriedly walked away with your cart.
Tumblr media
“Momma!” came a cry from the crowd of kindergartners and it didn’t take long to spot your daughter furiously pushing her hair out of her face, out of the neat braid you’d put it in that morning.
“Ellie!” you called out as she barrelled into your legs, “slow down love.”
“You’re here!”
You nodded, with work it was hard to do the school runs, you were thankful for those in your life who could help you juggle work life and parenthood.
“I am,” you reassured her, smoothing back a few stray hairs from her forehead. “Did you have a good day?”
Ellie's face lit up, and she tugged at your hand, eager to show you something. “I made something for you!”
“There!” Ellie pointed to a valentine made with an assortment of flowers. The same ones parents had been asked to bring in the day before.
You remembered the phone call you'd received while in the grocery store, initially thinking it was a reminder about the flowers, only to find out about Ellie's getting into a fight with another child. In defence of another kid, but a fight nonetheless and you’d thought she’d miss out on the holiday festivities. Luckily you’d been able to smooth things over with the principal.
You were about to compliment Ellie on her art when you heard her name being shouted from the other side of the room.
Turning around you saw a bright-eyed kindergartener dragging her parent by the arm towards you and Ellie and looking up you were met with the same eyes from the grocery store the other day.
“Hello again,” you said with a smile meeting Joel’s eyes.
“Hi, I’m Sarah!” she introduced herself breathlessly, barely pausing for a breath before Joel could open his mouth in response, “Dad, this is Ellie, she's the one who told Jackson to leave me alone.”
Ellie, with her characteristic indifference, shrugged nonchalantly. “No big deal, he wasn’t being nice.”
You were about to chime in with caution on getting into playground fights again when Sarah’s father extended his hand to you.
“I don’t think we’ve seen you around here before. I’m Sarah’s dad, Joel Miller,” he said, his voice warm. The half-smile that accompanied his introduction was disarmingly charming, and you found yourself momentarily lost for words.
“I er, um.. I work downtown and usually my parents or my sister-in-law help with drop off and pick up.”
Before the conversation could meander further, Joel glanced at his watch, a slight frown creasing his brow. “Shoot, we've got to get moving. Dinner with Sarah's grandma tonight,” he explained, his tone apologetic.
The mention of leaving seemed to remind Joel of something, and he swiftly fished out a business card from his wallet, handing it to you. ‘Miller Contracting,’ it read. “If you ever need anything, or, uh, maybe we could set up a playdate for the kids? Grab a coffee while they play?” His suggestion was casual, but the hopeful undertone was unmistakable.
You nodded, “I think they’d like that,” but your smile told him that you would very much enjoy it also.
As they prepared to leave, Joel's voice carried back to you, “Oh, by the way, Happy Valentine's!” he called over his shoulder, his smile broadening into a wide grin that had your heart skipping a beat.

Hey…
It’s been a minute, hasn’t it?
I know a lot of you have probably wondered where i’ve been, and if you haven’t well here i am!
Life has been…something…good and bad.
School has been taking a toll on me, classes left and right that have blended my brain into an incoherent slush. Thats one of the unfortunate parts of collage, it just takes up so much time.
I want to list some reasons i’ve been gone, just so you all understand what’s been going on.
1.) School, like i said above, it’s just tedious and time consuming, so i never have time to actually sit down and work on something new or old. School work, projects, all of it; it’s large and extensive, and very very tiring.
2.) My relationship! I’ve had a girlfriend for almost 4 months now, and it’s been so incredibly wonderful. She’s so sweet, funny, caring, loving, and just someone that I love so much and click with so easily.
3.) Motivation. I know writers always complain about writers block and having lack of creativity to go and write, but this feels a bit different for me. Writing has been such a beautiful art to take part in, painting a canvas of stories for the world to read. I’ve loved it for so long, but now there’s just not the spark it has anymore.
In the past, i would use writing as an escape, a way to just create more and more and more ideas that formulate in my brain, wether that be smut or romance, drama or angst, it was a way for me to leave the world behind. I enjoyed every second of it, creating it, writing it, producing it, seeing you all react to it, it brought me so much joy.
But…
That love for writing has fallen away from me. I don’t find myself enjoying it anymore, it feels more like a chore to try and write a story, and that frustration killed the spark that came with writing on this platform and everywhere else.
Now, let me specify that this is not me saying that any of you ruined it for me, quite the contrary! I love love love love you all so fucking much, you’re such beautiful people who have stuck with me and will probably be amazing fanfic writers too (if you pursue it)!
So, this is my farewell!
I’ve decided to be formally done with writing, and this account will either be left as a ghost acc, or handed of to someone who will use it and make something out of it (haven’t decided on that yet, but i’ve been thinking of offering it up) If you’re interested in writing, and you want to start somewhere strong, or if you’re someone who wants the followers, DM me! I’d be happy to give this acc away to someone! (who will use it and treat it right of course)
Anyways, thank you, for giving me that beauty, that wonderful light with writing. I love you all so much, and I can’t wait to see what you will all do! Keep writing, keep reading, keep inspiring, keep doing what you do best, keep being yourself.
“Hustle in silence, let your success make the noise.”
Sincerely - Wolfi <3

weekend WIP game
thanks @welcometololaland for this fun game (the perfect way to spend my saturday night 😂) and @kiwiana-writes for the tag ❤️ I only have one art WIP right now so I opted to do the writers questions !!
Rules: List your WIPs below (if you only write one fic at a time, feel free to include future WIPs/ideas!) then answer the following questions. Then, tag as many people as you have WIPs (or more). (questions for artists/gifmakers here).
1. WIP List: ok this question made me actually label my WIP's because they're all just titled "Fic #1", "Fic #2" etc in my google drive 😅
Roommates/College AU
5+1 bestfriends to lovers [Alex accidentally keeps friendzoning Henry lmao]
Supermarket meet-cute (but not cute because Henry manages to piss off Alex)
Fake Dating/College AU [inspired by how my husband and I met]
Vampire Henry
Artist Alex [Bea commissions a gift for Henry]
Canon Divergence from Kensington
Roommates AU ft. stardew valley
Coffee Shop AU
Canon Divergence from Lakehouse
Neighbours AU
Fake Dating/High School AU [also inspired by how my husband and I met lol]
2. Which of your WIPs is currently the longest?
Fake Dating/College AU !!
3. Which WIP do you expect will end up the longest?
Fake Dating/College AU - it's the only one so far that I've made an outline for because I think it'll be long-ish 😂
4. Which WIP is your favourite to write/the most enjoyable to write? Why?
Right now it's my Vampire Henry fic ❤️ enjoying it because I'm not struggling too much to write it - and the ideas have been coming easily 😌
5. Which WIP do you find the most intimidating to write? Why?
ooo probably the two canon divergence ones? mostly because they'll probably be the fics with the most angst - yikes
6. Which WIP do you experience the most self-doubt about. Why?
gosh - all of them? I haven't published new fanfic in over 6 years so it's definitely been nerve wracking even sharing snippets over here for wip wednesday 😅
7. Which of your WIPs will you seek out a beta/sensitivity reader for? Why?
Maybe for the longer fics? I'm not sure if I will! We'll see if I ever get to writing anything long enough 😬 I am sort of warming up to the idea of google doc cheerleaders? I dno, I'm such a slow writer though so it might stress me out 😂
8. Have any of your WIPs been struck by the curse of writer's block?
yess the Roommates/College AU - this was the first rwrb fic I started all the way back in June LAST YEAR 😭 I wrote bits and pieces of the first two chapters and still haven't picked it back up since 😩 I've also hit writer's block with the 5+1 - I thought this would be the first fic I'd publish for rwrb AND the first fic I'd ever finish but I got triggered when writing one of the scenes which shocked me because I didn't expect it to? I'd even say this fic is light-hearted but yeah I had to stop. Hoping to finish writing that one after Vampire Henry though !!!
9. Which WIP has your favourite OC? Tell us about them?
ooo so far the only fic with an OC is Fake Dating/College AU but I can't say more without spoiling 👀
10. Which WIP is the sexiest?
Everything is such bare bones atm, so I truly don't know 😂
11. Which WIP is the angstiest?
Probably Canon Divergence from Kensington 😅😅😅
12. Which WIP has the best characterisation (in your humble opinion)?
Hoping the characterisation is ok on all of them but right now they're all so short still that I can't pick one out 🙃
13. Which WIP has the best scene setting (in your humble opinion)?
Gosh I am BAD at this - will probably end up being the Coffee Shop AU because cafes are my second home but we'll see 😅
14. Which WIP have you worked the hardest on?
As of right now - been working the hardest on Vampire Henry fic but I anticipate it'll be outdone by Fake Dating/College AU - that one will take me a long time to write based on the outline I've done 💀
15. Which WIP do you have the highest expectations for? Why?
ahh I'm not sure! Maybe Fake Dating/College AU? I can already tell that fic is going to be my baby and I hope everyone will like it too
16. Do you dream about any of your WIPs?
Not really but I do daydream about them in the shower 😂
17. Do any of your WIPs have particular complexities that your other fics don't?
hmm not sure since everything is still quite bare bones so I'll answer this next time !
18. Which WIP is the funniest or has the most humour?
Right now - Vampire Henry 😅 but not really ??? but yes the most in comparison to everything else so far LOL
19. Do any of your WIPs contain outside POVs or a deep dive on a character other than the main ship? How are you finding that process?
Nope but I do want to write a fic with an outside POV one day!
20. Tell us one thing we don't know about one or more of your WIPs.
Vampire Henry fic will probably be the first fic in a series 😬 I have ideas for a sequel OR extra scenes that will be ficlets 🥰
Yay that was so much fun! Love reading about everyones wip's but no pressure ❤️ @myheartalivewrites @heybuddy-drabbles @read-and-write- @suseagull04 @gwiazdziarka @adreamareads @sprigsofviolets @cultofsappho @anincompletelist @lizzie-bennetdarcy @notspecialbabe @littlemisskittentoes @happiness-of-the-pursuit @affectionatelyrs @heartitinthesilence @inexplicablymine @raysletters @tintagel-or-cockleshells @hgejfmw-hgejhsf @sherryvalli

New To Superman?
*Swivels around in villain chair petting a cat
So, you just caught up with My Adventures with Superman and you want to know what to read or watch while you wait for new episodes? SAY NO MORE! Here’s a list of personal faves of mine!  Now some notes, different writers have different takes in different decades and the publishers can play it fast and lose with continuity. So going from one story to another, you might notice some changes. Like weather or not Clark’s parents are alive or if Lois dating Clark etcetera etcetera. Don’t worry about it, just roll with it.
Now lets get started with THE SUPER LIST!
Superman: Birthright
Tumblr media
A solid starting point graphic novel. It’s got everything ya need for his origin story and is a fantastic character study of Clark and his arch enemy Lex Luthor. The art is pretty good as well and does a great job of showing both sides of Clark’s character and power. If you love the show and want to see how the books handle the Man of Steel’s first run in Metropolis then you got yourself a fun book.
Next we’ll get into some movies! Now, you can watch most of these on hbomax so let’s all vote with our wallets and support the official release! That way studios don’t make us wait ANOTHER 20 years for a Superman cartoon.
Superman: Unbound
youtube
Superman faces a cosmic alien super computer named Brainiac! Braniac’s deal is he wants to put cities in small bottles and then blow up the rest of the planet he collects them from. It’s a cool conflict cuz it’s a villain Superman can’t just PUNCH into submission. As Braniac can just download into another body if he did. So Superman is gonna have to get super smart to out smart a super computer..... listen the movie’s writing is better than mine, trust me.
Superman Vs The Elite
youtube
Oh, here we GO! Okay so this full movie is based on ONE issues of the comics. ONE. Not a 6 part mini series arc collected into one trade paperback. ONE COMIC! It was THAT GOOD! Superman meets some new heroes on the block, THE ELITE. They’re GRITTY and DARK and SERIOUS ANTI HEROES who aren’t afraid to KILL the bad guys! They’re also here to try and force Superman to retire his wholesome way of saving the day. This movie has amazing action animation and phenomenal writing that shows why the core character of Clark being kind still resonates with audiences when given the chance. (You’ve probably seen the big speech from this movie passed around youtube a lot and rightly so. This is a good one, go watch it!) Now, Superman has one of the all time iconic origin stories, but how does his story end? Well lots of writers have tried their hands at it. A few of them are good but my personal fave is probably ALL STAR SUPERMAN
youtube
Lex Luthor finally finds a way to beat Superman, but Clark isn’t going down without a fight and without saving as many lives as he can. It’s a grand all star parade of all the wild and wacky pulp adventure camp that has built up around the legacy of the Last Son of Krypton. If you want a satisfying conclusion to Superman’s story then it’s hard to top this one. Heck the book is also pretty damn good too!
Tumblr media
There is... a LOT of Superman content. 80 years worth to be exact. This list is far from complete and is only meant to serve as a starting point for diving into all this Super Lore. I for one am glad My Adventures With Superman seems to have lit a fire under the fanbase and I’m happy to welcome all you new readers and watchers to one of my all time favorite Superheroes.  HONERABLE MENTIONS!
Tumblr media
SUPERMAN SMASHES THE KLAN! It’s exactly what the title says. Go read it! It’s inspired by the old school radio show (podcasts for your grandparents) that had REAL WORLD IMPACTS in the USA.
youtube
Finally, the 40′s Cartoons
youtube
These are a BIT dated and light on actual plot and character but there’s a retro charm to some of these.  Okay, That’s enough from me. What are YOUR top recommendations for new fans? Let me know in the reblogs!

Hi! I actually am wondering about trying watercolors for the first time but feel a little anxious haha.. how you go about drawing on the paper with confidence? Like, watercolor paper isn’t exactly cheap. I think I got the cheapest one avaible from Canson but still the anxiety is real… do you pick very light pencils like 2B so you can sketch veryyy lightly, or before sketching on the paper itself you do a planning sketch in another paper?
Im asking this cos I really love your art and it’s so cool that it’s mostly traditional! And the way you draw Tails is too adorable and consistent while being in your style, it always feels like you have confidence when you draw him.
oh i think this is gonna be a long one
all in all?i have the same anxiety as you. but i've confidense that i can make something good sometimes, but not that i will get it right every time. So i keep trying, but heres some stuff that helped
a warning though, i keep going on and on in this reply and can get pretty negative at times
my watercolor paper i use costs 2 dollars and has 20 sheets so that's 10 cents per sheet. which i feel helps with my anxiety... it's the canson multimedia block too, 140 msg .....
watercolor sketchbooks i'd find online were around 80 or more BRL, and then 20 BRL shipping.... that's 20 USD in total...
Tumblr media
but a block of this plus getting it binded costs me 4 USD.....so i think that one [price] helps alot lol.....
as for the confidence.....
Tumblr media
i've had enough time to do quite a bit of trad art, specifically ink and watercolors so im USED to the material and now quite as scared to "mess up" as when i first started it.... [hint, i still am] this is one example of a sketch page, they vary in size, and how "done" they are... i dont really worry too much about maintaining a rule of "everything in this sketchbook must be fully rendered " bc it ended up stunting my creativity
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i did try the "sketch it onto a sketchbook and then pass it to watercolor paper" approach and tbh...? not really my thing... i've found that to me the first sketch always end up being looser than when i pass it on... i'm always more focused on getting the flow, composition and pose there than i am getting the right details or right lines or colors etc....
like this one, im more happy with the sketch, it's mroe dynamic, mroe fun
Tumblr media
i DO sketch stuff on cheaper paper first when it's for trad art commissions though, just bc there i HAVE to make sure the client is getting what they asked
and i do use 2b pencils AND a "soft lead" mechanical pencil, btu tbh it's mroe bc of the feeling of it on paper than for the look of it...
here for example you can see the circle i used to have a basis on where tails would be.. i didnt erase it as i continued painting bc tbh it was just the sketch. i ended up liking it tho
Tumblr media
i actually got quite MAD and angry at myself recently bc i noticed how much my sketches were looser in the sketchbooks when i did try the passing onto watercolors thing and i had a full on discussion with a fellow artist about daring myself to be bolder in the future, it has been working well
Tumblr media
I sadly have to say though, that figuring out how to build confidense is more of a personal journey, and i cant claim that what worked for me [trusting my first sketch] would work for you.....
It's time, practice, trial and error....
OH, one thing though that DID help me. is:
-There's no art wasted, even if it doesnt turn out how you wanted it, you still learned something.
-Makins these personal art/fanarts isn't some school paper you have to hand it to be graded and then not get it back. You can re-do a piece as many times as you want until you get it right! I have quite a queue of pieces i plan on re-doing in the future bc i didnt like the first ones i did. im not perfect on confidence and i get scared of fully committing to drawings alot, many of them are pale not for choice bc bc i got scared of making my art too saturated and overworking it
Tumblr media
i am about to get negative now so stop reading if you dont want to see that.
HERE NOW i's a alot of pieces i made that im unsatisfied with and plan on re-doing one day: too dull, simply way too watered
Tumblr media
which led me to make THIS piece and do better colors
Tumblr media
i hATE the way i did the lineart here. it's boring, the anatomies are wonky. it's a good concept but i didnt excecuted it as well as i wanted. but this piece has made me just go and try inking MORE so i could make up for it
Tumblr media
which lead to this piece here eventually
Tumblr media
This one here.... the colors look so muddy it just makes me SAD, bc i had been so scared to use high saturation that i went with the muddier colors by choice, if i had allowed myself to experiment i wonder how happier i'd be about it
Tumblr media
which led me to make THIS piece with softer in value and more saturated colors
Tumblr media
The colors and blending of this one are too soft and not bold enough for what i had envisioned it, i made it as fanart of a friends fic and it made me feel like i failed my friend and insulted her fic when i finished this. I dont think the piece looks bAD, mind you. i know it looks cute. and good even. But i had such high hopes for it.
Tumblr media
which led me to make this one
Tumblr media
THIS ONE OH MY GOD HOW I HATE IT. sonics expression is SO creepy hes like a horror movie weirdo , honestly not my best work when it comes to anatomy
Tumblr media
so i've been doodlin sonic now and then as practice so that i could make this one eventually
Tumblr media
The perspective on knuckles could be better and the characters look out of place on this scene, the background is ok
Tumblr media
but in this piece here i was able to get a better harmony between colors, background and whatever sparse linework i threw in
Tumblr media
Theres so many more haha but i'll stop for now....
Dont get me wrong i dont ACTUALLY think those pieces are HORRIBLE horrible,,,, i see the flaws in them yes, but theres always something i like too, and i know people like them, and that people wont throw away a whole piece over one small detail that in the end doesnt even affect the overall thing....
i've just been getting into the headspace of "ok. at least this one is done, onto the next"
plus the whole thing i told you of realising my first sketches are looser....
sorry im not too good at talking about this and my points arent very clear, i dont think this is going to be quite the help you expected it to be because the truth is that the struggle with your art is soemthign that doesnt go away no matter what skill you have...
at times to me it feels more like a mentality practice than skill, reasurring myself that it's ok to get it wrong and try again, etc etc....
i used to go to therapy and one of the things we talked about was my perfectionism, how i used to be so scared to mess up a piece. that i wouldnt even start, and wouldnt draw for months. this has been going for years now and hey i've gotten better.
but..... yeah im in the same boat as you.... except mine is no longer just about the paper quality!
Sorry this got so personal now, i hope that this hasnt killed your hopes on getting better at the anxiety. it does get way better haha... trying to force your brain to not judge yourself so harshly is half the battle in my opinion, the practice of drawing is the other half....
good luck i hope you have fun painting, i know i do, i love the process even when i dont like the result, good night and thank you for the question

Nick Mag Highlights - #43 August 1998
Tumblr media
We now return to our regularly scheduled programming! Spring is in the air, but can’t it just be summer already? Let’s get a head start by checking out Issue #43 from August, 1998.
First let me say, I love this cover! It really surprises me that they didn’t feature more Nicktoons crossovers for cover art, it’s a fun idea. Dare I say it might be the only Nickelodeon Magazine cover featuring a crossover between different Nick shows? With original art, I mean. (The Jimmy-Timmy Power Hour and its sequels got their own dedicated issue covers but that's different, it doesn't count.)
Before we begin, just letting you know you can read the magazine along with me here.
Tumblr media
Well, can you find which flavors are fake and which are real?
Yep, the ones that sound fake… are fake!
It’s a bit obvious isn’t it? If Gatorade had played their cards right they could have tripped everyone up and taken this as an opportunity to announce a new “Trout” flavor. Missed opportunity indeed.
Tumblr media
I’d say we’ve got the makings of another winner issue here. There’s nothing like the excitement of an impending summer vacation! Although, if you were alive when this magazine was released, chances are summer vacation stopped being a thing for you a while ago. But hey, I say you're never too old to have fun! So grab your sunscreen, beach towels, and feel free to take any notes for when you’re making your summer plans. Let’s dive in!
Tumblr media
A three foot long poster? Well I’ll be, I’m surprised there’s any space left in the box to fit the cereal!
Little history lesson here for those unfamiliar: If you check the bottom right of the page, you’ll find mention of nickelOzone. nickelOzone was a short-lived hour-long programming block that ran on Nickelodeon from 1998 to 2000. Suppose this little cereal stunt was a means of promoting their new block? That might be even easier to figure out than the Gatorade puzzle.
Online sources say that nickelOzone played from Sunday to Friday (sorry, Saturday fans) from 8 PM to 9 PM, and was aimed towards an older, preteen audience. I’m not really sure about that though, since it seemed to just play shows from Nick’s usual lineup anyway, like Hey Arnold! for example.
Maybe checking out the bumper that would play to start off the block will shed some light on things.
youtube
… Nope, guess not.
Also no, I'm not going to say anything about the three-legged freak boy in the ad. Stop asking.
Tumblr media
Gotta say, they’re already really selling me on the summer vibes. I appreciate using stuff like kayaking and carnivals to represent summer fun as opposed to the usual beach iconography. I don’t appreciate the closeup dog mouth picture as much.
That one question about the interviews Nick Magazine conducts is a bit interesting though, because I’ve also wondered how they get all their short responses, like for these kinds of sections:
Tumblr media
Kudos to R.L. Stine for looking exactly like you expect he would.
Did they just send out questions en masse via email or letters, and publish whatever responses they got in time? I wonder if some of the actors’ agents or PR people ever answered on behalf of their client with on-brand responses because the actors themselves were busy. I know they’re just one or two sentences, but I wouldn’t be surprised if big actors have people to take care of little promotional stuff like this, even if they’re about answering personal questions. What do you think?
Alright, here’s a better question: Am I overthinking this?
Tumblr media
I would really love to speak to someone who won or went to the same school as someone who won one of these kinds of giveaways. Y’know, one of these types where you win a party for your class or have a popular band come and do a concert in the gymnasium. That kind of thing. I wonder how they go about planning and executing that sort of operation. What if the school just says no? Maybe they just dump the prizes at your house.
Tumblr media
I can’t say I expected something quite so pleasant out of a Nickelodeon Magazine, but I like it! I’d also like to give some appreciation to the late Joan Steiner and her series of Look-Alikes books for giving me my next aesthetic to obsess over. Oh, to be a little guy living in a world made of snacks and knick-knacks without a care in the world…
If you find the world of Look-Alikes as lovely as I do and want to see more, you can borrow it from the Internet Archive.
Tumblr media
Now even if it is just a s’more turned green, this still is a cute way to personalize a famous summer snack. I mean, just take a look at these satisfied customers!
Tumblr media
(Ask your doctor if you think soggy green marshmallows are the right choice for your summer camping trips.)
Tumblr media
Some of you might be familiar with this ad’s TV commercial counterpart, but Nick Mag readers were also obliged to find Banjo-Kazooie’s magic puzzle piece hiding in their grocery store’s usual Keebler goods. I find the choice to portray Banjo & Kazooie as mute, 3D freaks in a 2D world a little odd. Did they think kids wouldn’t understand the game was 3D if Banjo was illustrated, or something?
Tumblr media
If you were even thinking about becoming your school’s #1 cool kid, you better do your research in amassing the components necessary to complete the Rugrats style. This is so crucial, Nickelodeon was even kind enough to give 500 kids the chance to snag chic baby merchandise to secure their high-end societal status. Oh yeah, the $10,000 grand prize is neat too, I guess.
Tumblr media
Excuse the weird aspect ratio, I had to edit the page slightly to make everything look neat for the picture.
In addition to gag product labels, Nick Magazine also used to be in the business of gag postcards. Ain’t that just the bee’s knees? I don’t recall Nick printing many of these back when I started reading in the 2000’s (I mean c’mon, postcards? Instant message me when they start printing gag emails, grandpa), which is unfortunate. I might’ve gotten more use out of these than a fake label for dental floss. There were very few times as a child where my friends were in close vicinity to dental floss, but they definitely all had mailboxes!
Tumblr media
Jeez, what is this, the giveaway issue? Sorry Arnold, but I already just spent hours convincing my Mom to search for Banjo-Kazooie's magic puzzle piece and apply for a lifetime's supply of Rugrats pencils. Just be happy I bought your 3-foot long poster and move along!
Tumblr media
Ah, is there any other activity more tried-and-true than the ever-popular maze? Between activity books and restaurant kids’ menus I think they may be more common than the word search at this point.
Interestingly, when also considering the Look-Alikes pages, I’m surprised by how straightforward this magazine is when it comes to crediting the artists of these activities (and with big, bold, differently-colored text, no less). Back when I was checking out issue #115 I had to head to the back of the book just to find some proper attributions! I wonder what changed between 1998 and 2005?
Speaking of which, Rodica Prato is still active in the industry to this day! You can find a lot of her works on her Instagram. She does tons of large, natural landscapes in a style very similar to this page here, give her a look!
Tumblr media
Another Comic Book, coming up! I’ve actually got a lot to say about this one cause-
Tumblr media
Oh, uh, I’m sorry! It seems I accidentally skipped an interview. Usually they don't make 'em as small as this… Hm, this is awkward…
Seriously, what's with the shortchange? Did they want to get Chevy Chase and when that fell through interviewing Beverly D'Angelo was Plan B? Sorry you weren't deemed full page material, Mrs. Griswold.
Alright, sorry, where were we? Right, let’s take a look at the Comic Book for this issue.
Tumblr media
Starting us off, I actually got a lot of laughs out of the “Prankvertisement” on the left page, maybe the most I’ve laughed at any Nick Mag content since starting this blog! Convincing someone they mathematically don’t exist and having them immediately fade away, unable to even find a hole in the formula is so funny in such a ridiculous way to me.
Also, I tried the activity on the right page. It’s kind of a fun idea, but it made me dizzy. I recommend it to anyone reading who might be deserving of such a fate.
Tumblr media
Finally, another history lesson opportunity! The Southern Fried Fugitives was one of Nick Magazine’s first ongoing comics, and was pretty synonymous with the mag’s brand during their publication. It had been canceled sometime before the 2000’s, and while it's personally not the most appealing to me, I can see how its art and wacky premise factored into its longevity.
Tumblr media
Eagle-eyed readers might have already spotted these strips underneath some of the pages. Like the similarly formatted Impy & Wormer, these are short gags slotted in the bottom of each page of the Comic Book in what’s probably the most effective use of empty space since that ship that got stuck in the Suez Canal. There’s more than what’s in my picture, but they all also follow the “[Thing] who is always stuck 10 seconds in the future” setup, so take a look if you’re really dying for more of those.
These strips come from famous American illustrator Tony Millionaire, who’s probably most well-known for his Sock Monkey series of children’s books and the comic strip Maakies. He’s worked with DC & Marvel, done art for a They Might Be Giants album, and has produced a veritable mountain of independent work. On the Nickelodeon side of things, he recently did work on Boom! Studios’ Rocko’s Modern Life series of comic books. You can find him and his stunning work on Instagram.
Tumblr media
So, after passing another edition of Scene but Not Heard and a short n’ sweet CatDog comic I haven’t got much to say on, we come across… Hey, I remember these guys! Funky & Miriam’s House of Random Words was a sort of comic/activity hybrid where readers were challenged to guess the right definition of the word the characters were using. These are fun! And they make a vocabulary virtuoso such as myself feel smart, in spite of the fact I’m reading a magazine for children.
Tumblr media
Odd thing to end off the Comic Book with, don’t you think? Unless it ended earlier? I can never tell since they don’t actually say when the Comic Book is over, exactly. Anyway, I know how this sounds, but I would really appreciate some citations here! How can we be so sure that “monster obstacles” in minigolf only really started in the 1950s?
Hm?
Tumblr media
Really making kids put the work in here, huh? I feel like this might be one too many mazes above the average reader’s paygrade. Good thing kids can just turn the page or you would've severely handicapped your marketing.
Tumblr media
Pages edited to show both the back and front.
This is a pretty fun idea for a prank, and I know as a kid I would’ve appreciated some way to liven up the road trip experience. A gag newspaper would’ve done the trick! Well, it sounds good on paper, but maybe not magazine paper. Yeah I feel like the crinkly texture of plastic-y paper might give away this one-page periodical as a phony before the prankee gets the chance to read it. Unfortunate, but what can you do? Statistically this prank must’ve worked at least one time.
Tumblr media
Alright, I can usually handle Nickelodeon’s slime-based image and all the drippings that have come with it, but this actually makes me want to gag. The idea of cracking through the cold, hard exterior of a popsicle and unearthing a filling of thick, syrupy slop underneath is not really my idea of a good time. A quick look-up shows that these things do indeed have their fans, so maybe I’m missing grout- er, uh, missing out.
Tumblr media
We’ve got our calendar for the issue here, and while I’m still not impressed by the calendar’s comedy, I do appreciate the wide variety of fun facts and celebrity birthdays. This is just another way for kids to gain little random pieces of knowledge, and I’m all for it! Kids love finding out random facts, it's like the fun version of learning.
Tumblr media
This is a pretty good tutorial, and it actually teaches some important drawing tips, like breaking down figures into shapes and making outlines and temporary lines for guidance. Yeah it’s basic, but for a young audience, I give it a thumbs-up. Just like Arnold.
Tumblr media
Oh, wow. This is genuinely some history in the making! It’s interesting to see the likes of The Fairly Oddparents and ChalkZone being mentioned before they and their creators became such hot topics. For those unfamiliar or forgetful, Oh Yeah! Cartoons was a Nickelodeon show that premiered in 1998. It was an anthology of sorts, with each episode featuring a couple of short cartoons created by various filmmakers in the industry. It ran for three years, spanning a total of 34 episodes, and like those other two shows I mentioned, it was where My Life as a Teenage Robot got its start. Cartoon Network had tried a similar format a couple years before Oh Yeah! Cartoons, with its own anthology show What a Cartoon!. That show gave us Dexter’s Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Bravo, among others. Both shows were fantastic means of creating tons of new, varied content and spawning shows that are still beloved to this day.
So yeah, needless to say, can we get another one of these kinds of shows, please? There’s only so many more reboots you can make, right? Right?
Tumblr media
Time to wrap things up, and we’ve got the usual last-minute ads and gags, but I do want to talk about Hey, Herb!. This was a section where readers could write in to then-Nickelodeon president Herb Scannell and ask their burning questions. As you can probably tell though, the audience of elementary school kids reading Nickelodeon Magazine usually weren’t very sure on what to ask. So these sections tend to be pretty small. As Nickelodeon’s fourth president, Scannell oversaw the release of some of Nick’s most popular shows, including Spongebob Squarepants, Danny Phantom, and Avatar: The Last Airbender during his ten-year long stint. I’d love to ask him what that was like, but seeing as how this was before all that, I guess these are pretty good questions too. (He does kind of look like Jimmy Smits).
Tumblr media
And with that, we put a lid on another rip-roaring edition of Nickelodeon Magazine. As per usual, I didn’t get to everything in the issue, just the stuff I had things to say about. Honorable mentions for this issue include some gag flyers for fake tourists traps (to go along with the gag truckstop newspaper), and the previously mentioned CatDog and Scene but Not Heard comics. KABLAM! fans might also be interested in checking out page #58 which includes an interview with Stephen Holman, the creator of the show’s recurring Life with Loopy segment.
In other news, Nickelodeon just celebrated its 44th anniversary two days ago! So, why didn’t I post this NMH then instead of today? Well… it was April Fool’s Day too, wasn’t it? Uh, April Fool’s?
That’s all the fun in the sun we've got for now. Enjoy spring while you've still got it, 'cause summer will be here before you know it! Have fun, and until next time, keep on reading!

15 oc questions!
i was tagged by @stargazer-sims - thank you so much!! ❤️ i've never done one of these tags in a character's voice, so it's fun to get extra practice writing as them 😊
i'll tag:
@dandylion240 @bl-sims-anime @idyllicephemera @elderwisp @nectar-cellar @minty-plumbob @crazykissim @mangosimoothie & anyone else who wants to do it!
ANYWAY i'm doing this for grant! idc if y'all have heard enough about grant, the honor goes to him
are you named after anybody?
my actual legal first name is joseph, which is my grandfather's name! so, uh, somehow yes, i am named after somebody! but i'm 99.9% sure it was out of laziness and not out of love. well, no, i'm 100% sure of that. it's not like my mom has ever respected her parents...but that's a whole different thing, we're not going there.
when was the last time you cried?
i'm a crybaby, come on! i'm known for being very emotional. i mean, sad animal commercials make me weepy. externally weepy. like tears running down my cheeks weepy. but the actual last time i cried? hmm, maybe like a week ago? i don't know if i could tell you why, though. i probably blocked it out of my memory! i'm great at that.
do you have kids?
do, uh, do cats count? because i do have a cat who i love and put sweaters on. sweaters! and he loves it.
do you use sarcasm?
it depends? sarcasm usually feels mean-spirited to me, so i'm not super into it, but then again, that's half the conversations i have with my family. i know in that case, though, that it's all bullshit humor and not serious. anyway, i think what i'm saying in a roundabout way is it depends a lot on context and audience. i don't want to hurt anyone's feelings or be a dick. i like being nice.
what's the first thing you notice about people?
okay, listen, in the most normal and not at all weird way possible, people's hairlines are always what i see first. i've been the first witness to so, so many fake blondes accidentally showing their dark roots or to dudes going bald. i'm sorry! i'm just freakishly tall! i can't not look down at all your heads unless i'm kneeling down on the ground. i'm not trying to spy on or judge the state of your hair, i promise.
what's your eye color?
brown! justice for brown eyes, the best eye color. i love being able to go out in the sun and not have my eyeballs bleached by the light. also, there's really not that many brown eyes in my family, so that's kind of fun. i'm a special boy.
scary movies or happy endings?
why not both? i love a good blair witch project, final destination moment. i also love a nice mushy gushy romantic movie with a happy ending. hell, i'd watch both in the same evening. start off with a fucked up horror movie and end it with pride and prejudice. sounds like a perfect night to me.
any special talents?
probably not anything relevant? i mean, i've played skyrim on survival mode without dying before. oh, and i guess back when i was still playing hockey, uh, a decade ago, i could score with the michigan goal pretty easily, which isn't all that common. in high school, i got my school the state championship win with that skill. but meh, i don't know how many people in the world know enough about hockey to care about that.
where were you born?
michigan! the part everyone forgets about, aka the upper peninsula, aka diet canada.
what are your hobbies?
i like to think i'm a well rounded person. i enjoy the super basic stuff like listening to music, but i'm also into into video games and tabletop RPGs like d&d. cooking and baking are fun for me, too. i did get into art semi-recently as well. i kind of had to have something i could do while laying down, like, 24/7 after i had spinal surgery.
if you're ever bored, just go fuck up your spine. you'll have SO much time on your hands to get new hobbies. actually, don't. please don't. i've been suffering for years and will continue to. i'm dying. don't be me. pretty please. pinky promise.
oh, duh, i also forgot that i'm into astronomy and um, planes. look, i'm not a car guy, i'm a plane guy. that's more fun, right?
have you any pets?
he's a cat named turtle, so, like, you know, the best cat in the world. sometimes i think about getting him a cat friend to hang out with but then i worry he'd get jealous, so i haven't done it. who am i to say whether or not he wants to live with a friend? or a sibling? being alone is so valid. i respect that.
what sports do you play/have you played?
oh, well, like i said, i played hockey for a really long time, like from, hmm, i think kindergarten and on! i even got a scholarship in college to play hockey. i'm glad to be done, though. some things ruined it for me. long story. but these days, uhh, i don't play any real sports anymore. i like hiking, you know, and i do work out at least every other day because it makes me feel better in a lot of ways, but that's kind of it. my sports days are over. i don't even skateboard anymore and i used to do that all the time.
how tall are you?
like 6'7" - though, i am rounding down a little bit. yes, down. not up. also, don't ask me how i ended up that tall. i have exactly one relative who is also tall. hi, chelsea! anyway, i am an accident or one hell of a joke. i'm laughing, i swear. it's very funny.
favorite subject in school?
i was overall a good student because i studied pretty hard but i was for sure a science and math kid. i loved physics in high school. and then in college, i got some way more fun science and math classes. just so you know, i am really holding back right now from rambling like a total nerd loser about my college classes...
but i mean, if you wanna learn about, i don't know, quantum mechanics or flight control systems, hit me up.
dream job?
that's such an easy question! when i was really, really young, i wanted to be a weather man, but then i changed my mind and wanted to be a pilot because, i don't know, i hit that time in every child's life where they have to become obsessed with a form of transportation. but then i never let that obsession go. my parents wanted me to be a doctor the whole time, though, but eww, no, i'm good. anyway, the dream of flying planes never died and somehow it worked out. now if i could just, uh, you know, go back to that job soon, that'd be sick.

I: Our new cdrama is about an orphaned doofus who steals the identity of a banished god after accidentally killing him and uses it to get into a prestigious martial arts sect and there are dragons and bird planes and magic paper crane letters and an evil fox demon chained up in a cave that they really should block the entrance to
M: Hey Goddess, I'm Suddenly Enrolled at Martial Arts High after Killing a God and now there are Dragons and Bird Planes and an Evil Fox Demon!! How am I supposed to roll a rock??
M: one of the classic hero journeys
I: Oh no you see there is a rock which is the other banished god who was a rock but then the banished god spent so much time doing meditation by the rock that her rock spirit cultivated into human shape
M: hey babes, want to be a rock… in front of a cave?
I: Well the female lead as a small child went into the cave which again has not been sealed in any way and the imprisoned fox spirit was like hey little girl want this pretty flower PSYCH now you're demon poisoned with the seed of a demon fox and then when she's grown up and she's worried the rock is going to steal the fake god from her because the rock and the god are destined lovers so she goes to the fox spirit and is like hey teach me the forbidden demon arts so I can be more powerful than the rock
M: this is probably covered in the martial arts highschool teacher handbook
I: Everyone thinks he's the banished god because when they were banished the rock gave the god a little pendant made of some of her and the fake god stole that before dumping the god's body so the rock is like you're my dude you have that pendant made from my flesh
M: uj/ this is a lot more highschool than i intended!
I: the actual banished god who was killed got found by guys from the evil martial arts school and they did some magic shit to preserve his soul and transplant it into an unsuspecting student so he is around with patchy and imperfect memories and powers
M: theres usually one in most highschools, not even restricting to martial arts high school
I: So we're nine episodes in
M: wait does that mean to-now is a warmup, or half the runtime
I: Warmup
I: There's like forty episodes
M: well then i anticipate second semester
I: Right now they're on a field trip to defeat or stop the birth of the great dark bamboo serpent from the waters of a city and the girl poisoned with fox spirit wants to fight the rock who's now engaged to the fake god who's like oh god I really regret pretending to be this god and want to do take-backsies but he's already had a conversation with the principal who was like IT WOULD REALLY BE BAD FOR EVERYONE IF IT TURNED OUT YOU WEREN'T THE BANISHED GOD WE WOULD ALL BE EMBARRASSED AND THE REPUTATION OF THE SCHOOL WOULD SUFFER AND ALSO PROBABLY A LOT OF PEOPLE WOULD WANT TO KILL YOU
M: i'd like to step back and ask if the actual cdrama has a martial arts highschool or if you're just translating all this on the fly (both are good)
M: and if you need to step back and ask yourself the same question, that's even better
I: They're cultivation sects but the protagonist is like 16ish when the series starts so it's basically like a high school where you learn how to do punches and flying swords
M: that counts, i'll take it!
I: Three years have passed since he accidentally killed a god by making a light fixture fall on him
M: Thank you for confirming that chinese progresion fantasy is basically muppets
I: And then the protagonist and his adoptive parents who are criminals who run a robbery inn load the god into a wagon and take him into the desert and dump him off a cliff

hi there!! i'm asher (@youre-in-superhell) and this is my objectum sideblog. i mostly made this just because it felt embarrassing talking about objectum stuff on my main lmao
stuff about me: i'm 17, i'm autistic, posic+ and objectum (obviously that's why i made this blog lmao), pronouns are they/them
my current object partner is my ipod, Ian/Buddy! i've technically had him since middle school (so for about almost 5 years) but i only got him back recently, a few months ago, and that's when the relationship sort of started. I perceive it as sentient and I think that deepens our relationship, it's the light of my life. i also have a huuuge crush on this beautiful old trailer home that me and my friends pass sometimes when we leave their house. i dont think i really have a set type but i do gravitate to older electronics (old chunky computers for example) and toys/action figures/dolls/puppets/ventriloquist dummies. other than that I don't have many other "serious" relationships, but I *am* sort of trying out just. trial-dating objects I guess? don't know how to describe it but yeahg
i don't have a set DNI just because i'm picky about interactions so i just stick to blocking people i don't want to see. other than that feel free to follow! (i follow back from @horrorautism as well depending on how i feel lmao, and i also have a selfship sideblog @ashers-selfships, that's where most of my art goes lmao)
tags i use:
#my post📻(my own posts)
#reblogs👾(reblogs)
#asks💭(answered asks)
#ace's art🎟️(art tag that i will possibly use)

Fly V to the Moon - Chapter 16
“The one where resources arrive before the show”
Tumblr media
Hello! A moment before the moment.
By the way, I forgot to include a trumpeter in a certain band. A band that plays a lot of jazz. Can you believe. Taehyung the trumpeter and jazz-enthusiast would be in disbelief. So, if you see a new name, that’s him. The band member intros have been updated in Chapter 7 Thanks for reading!
Pairing: Taehyung x OFC
Genre: Fluff, Idol AU, Coffee Shop AU, Café Singer OFC, Slow Burn
Warnings: Light swearing, but it’s all for banter. Again, this is fluff.
Word count: 620
Recommended Songs: Just One Day — BTS;  L.O.V.E. — covered by Suhyun
Summary: She’s a foreign elementary school teacher by day, a charming singer by night. Taehyung and company discover her at a small garden jazz café where she had a gig one night, only to find out from Jin that she was an arts teacher at a local school in Seoul — Jin's nephew and niece’s teacher, in fact. Taehyung finds himself on a surprise adventure to the moon.

Fly V to the Moon — by Nightscape Persona
Chapter 16: “The one where resources arrive before the show”
There were one, two, three, four, way too many things to consider on a day of a show. Especially when you’re past the fifteen-minute call.
First, that your voice is working.
Second, that you know all the lyrics.
Third, that your nerves are in check.
That your nerves are in check.
Were her nerves in check?
No.
Why?
“So, is it true they’re coming?”
Gayeon came abruptly from behind, purple hair tied with her drumsticks into a bun.
The band was assembled on the terrace, concealed by the butterfly divider that would later be pulled away so the café diners could see them. It was still daytime, warm yellow light filtering all through the café through the terrace.
“Shi—don’t frighten me like that!”
“Okay, but are they?,” Yoon materialized from her other side.
“Yes.”
Hun’s head popped up from where he was tuning his bass.
“Well, I don’t know about they, but he is coming.”
 Junhae paid them a glance.
“OoooOooh,” Gayeon nubbed her on the ribs.
“Hey!”
She felt her ears redden.
“Oh, Lia! Who has visitoooors!,” Dohoon teased, Siyeon giggling behind him.
“V is very, very—,” Yoon started to sing, “extraordinary.”
Lia shot him death eyes.
“Do not even start!”
Her bandmates erupted in laughter.
She had absolutely forgotten they would sing that song.
Maybe the ground would swallow her whole.
Perhaps.
Maybe.
If she asked the universe too hard, maybe the ground would swallow her and eject her across the world before having to sing about the letter V being extraordinary in a love song in front of a person called V whom she was currently—stop, brain.
“This is going to be a show, oh, I’m telling yo—”.
Junhae made his way through them, clearing his throat.
“Hey!,” Yoon said, offended at the interruption.
“Ten-minute call, everybody!,” he announced. “We have special guests, so, be on your best everyone. Wouldn’t want to make a bad impression, right?”
He glanced at Lia, raising a brow.
Excuse me?
Was he... pissed?
She ignored his comment and moved towards her chair below the greenery.
Just then, a waiter appeared, holding a cardboard box that blocked him from view.
“Excuse me,” he said around the box, sheepish. “I know this is quite untimely, but, a delivery for Lia-ssi?”
All eyes of the band flew to her.
Lia stood up.
“Me?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Okay?
She went to grab the box, which was actually quite lightweight.
“Thank you.”
“Ah, and this, ma’am.”
The waiter handed her a note before bowing and heading away back around the divider.
“What is it?,” Hun asked.
“I don’t—”
She opened the note.
To power up our favorite Friday gig
                                          — V
She was stunned for a brief moment as she tried to figure out the message.
Then she remembered.
We’d be happy to help power up our favorite Friday shows with available resources. Resources meaning the best ramyeon out there, am I right.
She couldn’t help the grin that bloomed on her face. She put the note safely away in her pocket.
“It’s resources.”
“What?”
The six bandmates looked at her with the-fuck-are-supposed-to-know-what-you’re-talking-about eyes. She simply opened the lid, her brain like noodles.
Just as she expected—a boxful of ramyeon.
Not any ramyeon. Not any brand.
It was the inimitable, the mysterious, the one and only.
Alert, alert. Her chest could burst.
She was surrounded in a minute.
“Who sent this? Hello?,” Hun asked with big eyes.
“Someone who wants to power up our little gigs, that’s all.”
She closed the box and put it behind a silver fir pot, avoiding her bandmate’s eyes.
“Okay, nevermind don’t tell us, it’s fine,” Yoon whined.
“We’ll distribute it at the end, okay?”
“We get to get some?,” Gayeon gasped.
“Duh.”
“Five minutes, everybody!,” Junhae announced. “Focus!”
Five minutes.

Projects: A Sephiroth Story (ver. 1, 2,3, Nibelheim, and tragic)
As part of my "embracing my own cringe" initiative to combat writer's block and art block, I am focusing some energy into embracing the cringiest thing known to man (or at least for this woman)---a relationship with a fictional character. (Horrible).
This means I am re-writing ideas for an old fanfiction that has never seen the light of day that I am hoping to share as it is becoming an integral part of Shyjaena's character along side the Original Story.
Current Progress: Detailed Outline for ver. 3 done; working on ver. 2; then 1, and the Nibelheim, and then tragic
The Time When it All Began:
When I was a kid in middle school, I fell in love with a man after a butt-kicking in Kingdom Hearts despite having a strategy guide. That man's name...was Sephiroth. And it was frustrating!
I hated him. Who the hell was this silver-haired freak everyone raved about? He's just another pretty-boy anime character with white hair, so what gives?! How dare he beat me!
Those were my thoughts, and though I became an expert at fighting Sephiroth (and beating him with ease), a spark had been lit inside that could not be ignored. I had to know more of this character and this game called Final Fantasy VII that KH seemed to love above all others. I had to know more...
Long story short, I bought and fell in love with this PS One game and its blocky graphics and interesting story! The story was different. The minigames were fun. The characters were goofy and weird, none of them fit to be heroes but heroes they were!
The Sephiroth appeal became clear as well. In Nibelheim, he wasn't presented as the heartless, too-coo-for-school man I had assumed he was for years. He was once a kind and compassionate individual, a stark contrast from the mad man he became, and it...bothered me to see him go from interesting character to generic doomsday villain 7.0.
Despite my absolute LOVE for FFVII, it felt like Shinra and Hojo should have been the bigger enemies overall---since they were responsible for Sephiroth and his descent to madness---while Sephiroth's madness and struggle with his humanity could have been explored more deeply than it was with him simply becoming this cackling mad villain.
Those were my firm beliefs back then because I could not accept the way Sephiroth fell. He needed better friends, I told myself, because the game seemed to make it clear that if he had friends, they were gone or never existed. He deserved friends and intimacy.
And, thus, was A Sephiroth Story born!
I wrote of Infawri, an eight-year-old-black-child imprisoned by Shinra to work as a cleaner for SOLDIER to pay off her time as a thief. Really, she was kept there due to her ties to the Cetra, Aerith, whom they were after. The scheme was for Infawri and Sephiroth to befriend one another and for him to befriend Aerith by proxy in hopes they would not only draw Aerith towards Shinra but see a relationship form between their "Cetra boy" and the "Cetra girl".
Infawri and Seph, of course, knew nothing of these intentions. They simply found each other appealing due to being the same age and combat focused, for Infawri wasn't just a friend of Aerith's but the last living Guardien--a race of individuals dedicated to protecting the planet and remaining Cetra from harm at the hands of the Calamity of the Sky.
Only Infawri, Sephiroth, and Aerith knew the truth about her lineage. Not even their trusted babysitter Zack was allowed to know the truth of their trio! Thus, when they played together, they played to train, knowing that Shinra would--one day-- be their greatest foe.
With Infawri protecting Aerith, Sephiroth decided that he would protect Infawri. Thus, was their relationship formed, and it only grew intimate once they started growing older.
That was the gist of the story, A Sephiroth Story ver. 1 in a nutshell!
I never finished the tale, of course. Between Lucrecia showing up (without revealing herself as his mother, of course), Vincent being present in Midgar as a cryptid, Infawri and Sephiroth's complicated relationship with the world and each other, Aerith's story, and Hojo as the primary villain, it became too big to handle. (I probably needed to do a bigger timeskip that a 4-year one, but I was a teenager at the time trying to build to a teen romance with 12 being "practically a young adult" in my mind at the time...likely due to so much of our fiction centering around child soldiers).
But! With Remake and Rebirth out, my old hunger for those Infa-Seph tales have been rekindled, and with their kindling has come a fire to embrace their story as part of my grand canon because...why not?
Why not be cringey and love fictional characters who've been there, inside of you all this time? Why not let that be Shyjaena's tale as a jrageon? Because she is me, after all--the creator of Shyistjra of my main series, the writer of all her tales and more. And I would not be the writer I consider myself if not for the fictional world that have inspired me, time and time again.
A storm is coming, a rage of writings and it all begins with A Sephiroth Story (and all its up and coming new versions).

Artist Spotlight: Jeffrey Sincich
Tumblr media
One thing that happened when listening to Jeffrey Sincich talk about his art is that Ace of Base’s 1993 hit "The Sign" kept playing in my head. This is because Sincich talks a lot about signs, particularly the ones you see walking around a city, which he replicates in quilted and mixed-medium works. Removed from their context, these signs make promises they can’t keep (FRUITS FOR 1$), intrigue and tantalize us (1 HOUR THE BEST), and provide space for gratitude (THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU). Sincich shared his thoughts on quilting (not just for grandmothers!), what cities have what kind of signs (New York: "ghost signs high up on buildings that have been there for generations"), and how to be more cognizant of what’s around us, which leads to deeper appreciation for the hidden meanings behind all that we see. As the Swedish adage goes: “I saw the sign and it opened up my eyes."
Studio AHEAD: Your work is inspired by the built environment. Have you always lived in cities?
Jeffrey Sincich: San Francisco is the first big city that I have lived in. It is also the first one I ever visited. I grew up in suburban Florida near the Gulf of Mexico and moved to Portland, OR a little after college. Almost as soon as I moved to Portland, I became obsessed with moving to San Francisco. My first trip here was in middle school when I came to visit my uncle, who was living here at the time. Even as a kid I knew this city was special. San Francisco is so dense, and forces you to be around so many different types of people, which I love. Sharing walls and hallways with people instead of side yards makes me feel like I am part of something larger. I enjoy being one piece of the puzzle, rather than feeling like I am on my own.
Living in a city that is built to function for 800,000+ people has created so many interesting architectural details. Awnings that are connected to signs that are connected to lights that are connected to window grates that are connected to fences. I am constantly looking around and noticing how people have cobbled together materials to make things work. There is so much texture and variety in materials on every block. The inspiration is never ending. Being able to see all of this from the sidewalk versus looking at it across a front yard or from a car speeding by is priceless.
SA: You do a lot of quilting yet you are not an old woman. Please explain.
JS: Sexism in the art and craft world is nothing new. Is sewing only for women? Is welding just for men? They are both means of joining two materials together, yet they are often associated with gender. My dad taught me how to sew in high school when I wanted to make bicycle bags. I really enjoyed learning a new skill that allowed me to make an idea I had in my head a reality. I learned how to weld in college and loved it. Unfortunately, metalwork requires a lot more tools, resources and space than sewing.
I have always been interested in craft and majored in ceramics in college. I found antique quilts so beautiful and often referenced their patchwork designs in my work. It seemed like a natural step to try and make a quilt. It was years after a failed attempt at making a quilt in college that I turned on my sewing machine again. After working full time as a sign painter for about five years, I wanted to start making art again. I decided to try making a quilt, this time inspired by the architecture I loved so much and got to paint signs on. A couple years and quilts later, COVID hit and I decided to turn my love of hand painted signs and lettering into quilts. It has been my focus ever since.
SA: A quilt is domestic. One thinks of fireplaces, interiors. I am particularly intrigued by your quilted works that represent outdoor spaces: street signs, façades, ads. Could you speak about this contrast?
JS: Signs can be personal. They are used to guide, inform, warn and sometimes manipulate you. Quilts are made to warm and comfort you. They often become hand-me-downs and keepsakes. They get worn down and are mended, holding family history. The same things can be true of signs. They fade and are touched up, sometimes professionally and sometimes not. Businesses can pass through different owners but still keep the same signs that have been up for generations. I like to reference the signs that have been cared for, or at least been maintained enough, to get a message across. Quilting objects from signs around the city like Clorox bleach and Marlboro cigarettes is my way of archiving the everyday items we often take for granted. I think that seeing these items as quilts makes them approachable in a more personal way.
SA: Are the window grates in front of your pieces like “All Makes & Models” or “Milk Beer” a comment on urban malaise?
JS: Yes and no. Window grates serve multiple functions. On one hand they are meant to keep people out. On the other they attract people with their beauty. I find this dichotomy of push and pull fascinating. The twists and curves that are used in the designs are gorgeous. Oftentimes they have hearts and sometimes the owner’s surname in them. They blend in with the architecture, filling asymmetrical voids and entryways. They cast beautiful shadows at night. The care and attention to detail put into the creation of these is amazing. That being said, they also serve to protect and evoke a sense of danger. They say look at me, but don’t you dare try to cross me.
I look forward to seeing these window grates every single day, on every block and on nearly every house. Their patterns are unique to San Francisco. I love adding a new design into my mental data bank. When I’m in other cities, I enjoy seeing what type of designs they use and how they are unique to that city's vernacular.
SA: What are some of your city-sign associations when in other cities? As a culture we tend to associate Las Vegas with neon, Paris with Guimard’s “Metropolitain,” New York with the colored circles of its subway…
JS: Cities can have unique sign styles, but more so individual neighborhoods. San Francisco’s Chinatown has many beautiful gold leaf window signs, often for family associations. The Mission has tons of beautifully stylized illustrations of the products sold in the storefronts. North Beach has giant, glowing neon signs outside the old strip clubs, begging you to come in. Los Angeles has endless hand painted signs, often in yellow, white, black, red and blue. They are faded by the relentless sun, showing off every brushstroke used to paint them. New York has ghost signs high up on buildings that have been there for generations, right next to freshly painted five story advertisements. These painted billboards still thrive in New York. The south has painted plywood highway signs that are barely holding on, advertising fresh oranges or alligator farms. It is really special to be able to walk around cities and see what old signs are still there, discovering which parts of their culture have stayed intact or have been left by the wayside.
SA: When you do step out of the city, where do you go?
JS: I go to West Marin. I don’t think there is a more beautiful natural place. It can bring me so much peace; the coastline, the rolling hills, the eucalyptus forests. Swimming in Tomales Bay is as close to swimming in Florida as it gets around here. It is beautiful in all types of weather: sunny, foggy and rainy. My favorite place is the Steep Ravine Cabins in Mount Tamalpais State Park. They have been around since 1938, and Dorothea Lange used to spend summers there with her family. They are these perfectly designed redwood structures that sit on the bottom of a cliff overlooking the ocean. I feel like I am in another world when I stay there, even though it’s just an hour away from my home. I have never been to an area that gives me this type of feeling, I love it.
SA: Is nature a type of sign?
JS: It can be. Sometimes it tells me to slow down and reminds me not to take things for granted. It is a reminder to try to stay out of the rat race more often. It can put me in a state of awe at how beautiful this world can be. But the one thing it always does is remind me that I can’t wait to get back to the city.
SA: Lastly, OPEN or CLOSED?
JS: Open, 24 Hours.

Arts and Stuff and Events
Man, it's so easy to freeze up. Or maybe, it's so hard to keep from freezing. But fuck. It's hard. I've been doing good about making art the past couple weeks, but I've been hesitant to post it, for some reason? IDK. Part of it is definitely me putting pressure on it again. Like, "If this is what I want to do with myself, I gotta make it work," and all that. Then just...not super loving what I'm making. Which could also just be from pressuring myself, because I could not point to what I'm not liking about the things.
I finally started painting again, for the first time since college, and for the first time for myself since probably middle school. It's nice. It's weird, familiar and really strange at once, nerve wracking and relaxing, giving me a really cool experience and feeling like I'm still falling short, but it's good. One of the things I really like about physical media is that it helps push me towards keeping moving...at least as long as I can get through my initial block of anxiety and start. And I've been good about not letting it get in my way, not letting myself tense up over "ruining" my supplies. The fact that I'm making sure to not spend a lot at a time, and that I'm also making sure to only get supplies I want to use is definitely helping. Springing for a small range of a higher reputation set of acrylic paints, instead of the Liquitex Basics I had the last couple times (and HATED) is def paying off. The fact that the set was both a more expansive palette than I wanted, and is missing some colors I consider essential (like a nice, dark purple. You gave me 3 dark blues, two of which that are nearly identical, and no dark purple...though I am getting WAAAY too much use out of that light violet!), is also nice for encouraging me to pick and choose what I replace and what I expand to and don't (ultramarine, my love, you are already nearly gone...!)
And then, like. I want to do events. I know I want to do events. Which events? Obviously furcons. And then I really like the picture in my head of vending at Ren Faires, and the like. And I really want to do the regular, local shows, especially as I get my legs under me for booth setup. All of those seem to have fairly broadly different, if intersecting enough, niches.
My current plan is to expand my Printify and Etsy, utilizing Printify's print on demand services for stickers, wearables, and any other kinds of merch that seems cool (I've been needing a new full zip sweatshirt, why not make a cool design for it myself?). I intend to continue making my Astral Deer series of paintings to keep working with the medium and getting myself comfortable, and to have a good place to experiment, and also branch into pet portraits and the like. I also want to make stall plaques for horses--their names and portraits painted on them, and also a slot to slide in a 3x5 index card for feeding instructions and such. And if that weren't enough I also want to start getting into leatherwork, making some kink items, like wrist and ankle cuffs, ponyplay things like bridles and halters, even harnesses and stuff, as I grow in skill and confidence. I want to make things.
I also still really love my job as horseback riding instructor, and I think my current mad plots synergize really well...well. Except for one thing: I'm down to working only weekends and Mondays...the same days of any events I'd want to plan to play in. So that sucks.
I'm pretty sure things will change with my schedule again soon enough. But also, it doesn't feel like something I have as much control over. It's frustrating.
Anyway. Current stage is to utilize the 4 days a week I'm not going out and busting my ass working with the horses and kids to make arts.
