MORE TONIGHT HELL YEAH!!!! i actually watched the first episode of the live action today!!! and yeah i decided i do NOT like mackenyu's acting as zoro. i dont really blame mackenyu for it bc i assume its an issue with the producers or writers or whatever wanting to make him more badass,, but i kind of cant stand it. he has the cool guy vocal fry.... i hate it... i hate that. i looked up videos of mackenyu in like. regular settings! and he seems like a genuinely cool person!! i think if he could channel his regular energy into zoro more.. it would be perfect . i would say that is the perfect zoro. to be fair though he could relax a bit with the cool guy thing later on in the show and i just don't know it yet bc i only watched episode one (holding out hope that thats what happens). overall . besides my issues with zoro being too cool n serious and monotone.. it was actually really enjoyable!! the kobylu moment where theyre stargazing together?? hello??? hello???? for the record i dont really ship kobylu but i do enjoy the ship.. does that distinction make sense.. i hope it does. and also zoro has freckles. i cant get over that... freckles ... he has freckles.. there r a few choices i didnt like (that i cant remember rn) but it was a fun watch!!!!

i definitely played games online as a kid but i also like. was on websites i should not have been on (deviantart) as young as 10. my old youtube comments arent that bad to look back on, sometimes theyre kind of funny, but i imagine finding any of my old accounts on any other website would be very upsetting 😭. i dont know if i ever deleted my accounts or if theyre all still out there . for me to come across at any time. (though i doubt i ever will, considering i havent in the 10+ years since)

i also try not to put anything else out there, but sometimes i (stupidly . very stupidly) decide to just. not care that much. i have just accepted that people have probably found photos of me as a child online (not that i remember posting anything from before i was like 15 but. still) and i. just live with the constant assumption that i am being watched. im a very paranoid person sometimes so i know if i stress out about whatever is online about me it will literally turn into an existential crisis

i was actually looking up vocaloid stuff yesterday.. learning The History (i was watching kaito x gakupo mmd's) and i found out nyan cat?? was vocaloid?? originally?? and the version that got popular was utauloid?? i used to play 10 hour nyan cat videos on the tv. this was a monumental discovery. i love finding out that niche internet communities are like . the beginning . of a huge internet meme.. its seriously so interesting. plus i recognized a lot of older popular vocaloid songs!! i had no idea it had seeped so much into my life . without me knowing it.

i was kind of tempted to go see kikuo and bo en live!! im kind of?? a bo en fan?? i listened to that song that was in omori before omori was out (i still dont really know what omori is) and i like a few other songs by them but im not really someone who likes musical artists. i just like a few songs,, or one song,, from an artist,, and then nothing else. i do like quite a few of kikuo's songs though!! most of all i was just tempted bc the timing was right and i noticed they were coming to a city nearby. didnt end up going bc i couldnt justify it!! did u have a good time!? also i saw the miku expo experience,, in portland.. where they just got what was visibly just,, a tv. even as someone who is a Beginner vocaloid fan.. that is so disappointing

my aphantasia isnt really that bad and its not something i notice most of the time, so it doesn't really get in the way. i kind of think it might help me in art because i dont get stuck on the blank canvas part, trying to picture what to draw? idk ive heard a lot of ppl talk abt that being a struggle. i just jump right into it since i cant come up with anything most of the time anyways. other times tho i can picture things very clearly.. i think part of the aphantasia is just that i have autism. and adhd. and i cant concentrate well enough to picture things a lot of the time, especially when i actually want to. most of the time the things i successfully picture are involuntary

literally the whole setting of water 7 was so interesting and cool and . i adored it. the aqua laguna,, part of the city being underwater bc the water level keeps rising. the canals!! the water horses!! its all so fun. i actually do love the frobin moments in enies lobby, and i love kaku, and i love the "i want to live" moment, but other than that i dont have much i found super exciting.. oh and the moment with the merry at the end of it. that broke me . why give me hope and then rip it away from me!! oda always does this. /pos though.

Reol is one pathetic, thickheaded sellout. I have not had an artist breakup like this since The Neighbourhood. Imagine working on an infamous pedophile’s series’ remake and THANKING said pedophile just when you were given the benefit of the doubt (Nobuhiro Watsuki, author of Rurouri Kenshin). Imagine hopping on a track (while we’re at it calling it extremely mediocre would be generous) of a Vtuber with such a racist past that a producer who simply sent her company a beat felt the need to apologize and stopped promoting that song. The Vtuber in question (Mori Calliope) did a half-baked “apology” when called out and then went on to complain about “cancel culture” in a song, instantly disproving any possible remorse. Most recently (yesterday), imagine collaborating with McDonalds when they’re on the official BDS list when there’s no excuse for ignorance as there are extremely frequent protests and events for Palestine in Japan. When there are numerous Japanese artists expressing their support for the freedom of Palestinians. Seeing this come from someone who considers herself a minority and has spoken out against racism before, either she really lost any bit of the common sense she had in 2023, or just as believably if not more, she really was fake and performative throughout her entire career. I found myself to be fond of her early last year and I can certainly say I personally witnessed an incredibly laughable downfall, both music and more importantly morals wise. I don’t know if I can say I blame myself because nobody saw this coming and I wasn’t put onto this Earth to keep a 30 year old woman’s behavior in check, but I’d be lying if I said I don’t regret supporting her and recommending her throughout a time period of around a year, because I truly do. May her platform be diminished sooner or later.

So that’s why I’ve been posting less and less about this lady in the past couple of months and what the username change was truly about… I’ve been finding out more and more about these incidents and stopped supporting her in private. I am responsible for and deeply regret not posting about this earlier (minus the McDonalds collab bc as I mentioned it happened yesterday and I’d post about the Kenshin thing immediately if I’d found out she personally thanked that creature though I was disgusted either way) and thought just removing her from my pinned would suffice, since that’s what I do when I no longer like an artist as to not give them attention at all and bc few of my mutuals are into her anyway but the MCD was the last straw for a post like this (as I mentioned I haven’t been listening to her at all for a while now). I realized I used to post about her more frequently than I remember and it didn’t feel right to just not call out someone I used to like as opposed to notoriously problematic figures I’ve disliked for a long while. I’m doing this because I DID use to give her lots of positive attention only to find out she didn’t deserve it, and I simply do not stand by it anymore. And I’m not calling all of my current faves unproblematic perfect angels either bc that’s frankly untrue, however her shameless check-chasing has reached revolting levels. If I have ever recommended her music to you, don’t even bother.

My Review of Rurouni Kenshin (2023)

If you grew up in the 1990s and early 2000s, chances are you’ve come across this title.

Rurouni Kenshin’s original anime aired in Japan from 1996-1998. It managed to make it out west with being licensed by Media Blasters and aired on Cartoon Network’s Toonami block in the early 2000s. With 95 episodes to its name, Rurouni Kenshin was pretty popular everywhere. In later years, a couple of OVA’s were released. One of them was a prequel that was never seen outside of the manga. The second one was a sequel to the main series that goes in a different route from the manga. And the third was a retelling of one of the series best moments.

And just laying it out there, yes, this series is sadly also known as “Samurai X”. I say “sadly” due to what was done to the series with that name. What with the bastardization of people’s names and what have you! The name of the series is Rurouni Kenshin. If you see that other name, turn around and don’t look back.

Now, does this series live up to the hype? Yes and no. While this was one of Japan’s most rewatched animes of all time, the series could have been better. Pretty much everything after what is known as the Kyoto Arc is seen as garbage to many. In some cases, they’re not wrong. It’s just a sea of fillers until the series ended in 1998. I guess some of the blame could be that they changed studio hands during the run of the original anime. Studio Deen has such a lousy reputation for messing with a good thing.

Case and point, Rozen Maiden 2013!

It’s just that when Kenshin gets into the swing of things, it’s a thrill to watch. So, having a retelling of the story and have it be faithful to the manga is welcoming for long-time fans and curious newbies.

Just. One. Thing. Though.

THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM: Nobuhiro Watsuki is the creator of Rurouni Kenshin. Back in late 2017 while he was releasing more Rurouni Kenshin in manga form, it was discovered that he was in possession of child pornography. This news alone is an immediate red flag, drop everything, cancel this bro right stat now kind of thing. What happened was he was arrested, paid a fine, and went back to releasing his manga after a several-month hiatus.

Obviously, everything about the story is disgusting. I’m not sure how much child porn was removed from this man’s place but I feel like it was somewhere between what Jared Fogle had and a fuck-ton. And now every fan is having this moral dilemma of watching this anime if it’s supporting this man. When it comes to me, fuck yeah, I’m still watching it. Do you have any idea how many things I still watch where the original creator is a fuck-bucket? And don’t lie, you probably do the same. Ren and Stimpy, The Loud House, Rick & Morty, Earthworm Jim, all of these and more are the product of some sick ass-banana. Just keep that in mind before tossing stones. You all know who you are and you all aren’t squeaky clean in what you watch. None of us are.

In the end, it’s your call to make on watching this or reading anything else that comes from Watsuki. Certain companies have made their call already when it comes to Rurouni Kenshin. Weekly Shounen Jump still prints whatever Watsuki puts out. Viz Media however has put an end to the latest Rurouni Kenshin manga that’s been put out in the last few years, but has kept the original manga up.

OKAY, NOW LET’S ACTUALLY TALK ABOUT THE ANIME: I know it’s a lot to go over, I just felt it necessary to do the frank discussion before I talk about the anime. This anime is a full reboot. That means, it’ll be a different studio animating it, it will supposedly take after the manga instead of diverting into a different path like the original series, and yes, the cast will be different. Which cast? All of them!

Rurouni Kenshin goes like this. It has been well over a decade since the end of a brutal war. With the entering of the Meiji era, peace was assumed as weapons like swords are banned. Of course, that won’t stop people from killing. And the never-ending fight with the government can cause this peaceful time…it was never really peaceful. Kenshin Himura is a wandering rurouni. He carries with him a double-edged sword despite the sword ban law put in place. Prior to this moment, Kenshin was known as “Hitokiri Battosai”, a ruthless killer. But after certain events, Kenshin swears to never kill again.

One day, he meets a young girl named Kaoru Kamiya. She’s the owner of a dojo that specializes in a certain style. At first, she confronts Kenshin thinking he is the dreaded Hitokiri Battosai. Most of it was a misunderstanding because yes, Kenshin is that, but he’s not the one using the name in vain and using Kaoru’s fighting style. After several incidents between the characters, Kenshin decided to set up shop and stay with Kaoru at her dojo. Eventually, two other characters join along. Yahiko, an orphaned boy who is training to be a great swordsman one day. And Sano, who once served during the brutal war is now a bit of a drifter. But he’ll have Kenshin’s back when they’re in a battle.

BETWEEN THE NEW SUB AND THE NEW DUB…AND EVERYTHING ELSE: I’ve gone on in length about the dubs to Rurouni Kenshin in the past. Prior to the 2023 remake, there were a total of three English dubs. The first one was for the original television run featuring Richard Cansino, Dorothy Elias-Fahn, and Wendee Lee. This was dubbed by Media Blasters. The second one consisted of the OVA’s featuring folks like Shannon Weaver, Gray Haddock, and Katherine Catmull. These were dubbed by ADV films and later Sentai Filmworks. And as for the third dub, that would be Sony’s sad attempt at redubbing Rurouni Kenshin filled with bastard names, a bastard name title, and new voices.

In the beginning, I was hoping for the absolute best-case scenario when it came to an English dub for this retelling. When it comes to me, I will always pick the first dub and that is for one big freakin’ thing. Steven Blum voicing Makoto Shishio. That and I always thought Richard Cansino was the best Kenshin. I’ve already been disappointed when Sentai didn’t reunite the original cast when retelling the Kyoto Arc several years ago and that’s why my skepticism is in play here. Plus, I’m pretty sure some of the original dub cast has already retired from voice acting. Sadly, the original voice for Misao (Philece Sampler) passed away in 2021. Much to my dismay, there was a new cast alright. Who they are was the bigger question.

Crunchyroll dropped the episodes without warning three months after the premier and without stating who would be in the cast. That’s certainly out of character for them. They get chatty when showering the masses who is going to be in an English dub cast everywhere they can including all social media platforms. I would have chalked it up to the SAG-AFTRA strike. But then I remembered, Crunchyroll has a conniption when it comes to that certain union. Plus, it never stopped them before as they’ve been whoring other English lists that same week this dropped. So, the obvious reason has got to be fear of having the audience badger the cast for being in Rurouni Kenshin after what the creator did. Only Kenshin’s voice actor came forward a week after the actor’s strike. The rest, most of us had to guess. Except for Yahiko, he just sounded like an angrier Gon. So, it’s Erica Mendez.

Just so you know, Aniplex had a live festival with seiyuus promoting the shows they’re on back in September of 2023. And what do you know, Souma Saitou and Rie Takahashi were on stage promoting Rurouni Kenshin. Out and about, no one getting doxxed, threatened, hate-mailed, or anything of the sort. I have a few scattered thoughts here. First of all, if there’s any bad-mouthing of Rie Takahashi of any kind, you and I are going to have a problem. Second of all, American fan-bases are fucking toxic and would harass the voice actors relentlessly to the point of no return. And third, why couldn’t they just come up with some fake-ass alias names for the English cast? On the other hand, I’ve seen how people on social media has harassed voice actors over trivial bullshit and it’s only getting worse. So, I kinda understand why this happened.

As for the sub, yes, the voices here have changed. So, when I originally watched Rurouni Kenshin, I watched nearly everything dubbed. It wasn’t until much later when I stumbled upon the sub, I discovered that Kenshin was voiced by a woman. Now, I’m getting another case of whiplash as I’m getting used to hearing Kenshin having more of a manlier voice. With all of that said, here’s the cast of Rurouni Kenshin 2023!

JAPANESE CAST: *Kenshin is now played by Souma Saitou (known for Diavolo on Jojo’s Pt. 5, Yamaguchi on Haikyuu, Kain on Rinne, and Miyano on Sasaki to Miyano)

*Kaoru is now played by Rie Takahashi (known for Ai on Oshi no Ko, Megumin on Konosuba, Emilia on Re:Zero, Sumi on Rent-A-Girlfriend, Ena on Laid-Back Camp, Mash on Fate/Grand Order, and Tomo on Tomo-chan is a Girl)

*Yahiko is now played by Makoto Koichi (known for Elza on Interspecies Reviewers, Young Jun on Tomo-chan is a Girl, Sumika on Yuri is my Job, and Sakura on Lycoris Recoil)

SHIPPING: Can I delve into this topic without going off the deep end and bringing up spoilers?

No, not really. These spoilers are over 30 years old. Deal with it.

Kenshin x Kaoru is a ship that has set sailed into the sea. No matter how much sex appeal Megumi can throw at it! Trust me on the matter, it’s a signed deal. I know that it almost seems one-sided in these 24 episodes, but that’s how it is.

WHAT TO COVER: In a reboot, you’ve gotta see what this version kept and what they didn’t and if it’s all in the right part of the story. Of course, we get the stories everyone is used to with this series like Kaoru being duped by that old creep and the debuts of Sano and Yahiko. Near the halfway mark, we’re already introduced to Aoshi and watched Kenshin and Sano take on the drug lords that were using Megumi. There have been a couple of episodes dedicated to some familiar storylines like Sano’s old comrade and the young lad Yutarou who wound up on the wrong side of the blade. Meanwhile, I’m squirming around in my seat waiting to hear something from a certain awesome villain. I have made no secret to loving the Kyoto arc and its main villain, Makoto Shishio.

Come episode 19, I heard his name uttered and know that it’s coming up.

Wait a sec! There are only 5 episodes left in the season. If this studio dares to even cram the whole Kyoto arc in that short amount of time, I’m throwing this entire media out the window. There’s gotta be a second season. Even if it’s only like 12 episodes that covers the span of the Kyoto arc, it’s better than the worst-case scenario. Thankfully, they did not cram the entire Kyoto arc into an episode. No mad man would ever do…Studio Deen would do that.

Case and point, Rozen Maiden 2013!

I am now being informed that I have already insulted Studio Deen’s attempt with Rozen Maiden twice now in this review. Let me get back to what I was saying. Thank the great good lord those guys are not in charge of Rurouni Kenshin again.

Actually, two of these episodes were a flashback episode that was originally an extra chapter to the manga. And if you’re wondering if this flashback episode contains Kenshin back when he was the legendary manslayer, it does not. It’s a story of Kenshin a couple of months prior to meeting Kaoru and the rest. For Kenshin’s past…just watch the OVA’s from 30 years ago.

The final episodes of the season set the stage up for the Kyoto arc with the introduction to Hajime Saito. Ten years prior, he was a bit of a rival to Kenshin back when he was the noted manslayer. Now, Hajime is part of the Shinsengumi. Kenshin and Hajime end up facing off like back in the day and he wound up reverting back to his manslayer mode.

Apparently, Kenshin can turn off that mode with a punch in the face.

As one does! The last time Kenshin was in that mode was when Kaoru was kidnapped earlier in the series. This time, Kaoru’s voice had no effect. This moment leads to Kenshin’s crucial decision at the end of the season. After the spar, he is confronted by Okubo Toshimichi, the man who has been trying to make the Meiji era a more peaceful time. He asks Kenshin for help of taking out a certain someone. Yes, it’s Makoto Shishio. Also known as, the man who just won’t die. Case and point, he’s been stabbed, knocked unconscious, and even set on fire. He’s still standing! Hell, he’s even known as the new Hitokiri Battosai manslayer. Kenshin gave this a lot of thought as he wants to remain peaceful and never kill again. Unfortunately, he’s given no choice when Okubo…well, he…

He fucked around and found out!

One of Shishio’s commrades (Soujiro Seta) murdered Okubo and sent a stark warning to Kenshin about going forward with anything brash. Kenshin truly wants for a peaceful nation and doesn’t want to kill again. In the final moments, we see him have a few precious moments with Kaoru before proceeding to leave her.

DON’T CRY, FANS! HE AIN’T GONE FOREVER! But a season two must, must, must, must, MUST COME!

Thankfully, two days after the finale we get the announcement that Rurouni Kenshin is indeed getting a sequel in 2024. Unknown to when in 2024, if the same studio will be doing it, how many episodes it’s going to be, or if Steven Blum is going to return as the voice of Shishio. Seeing as NO ONE from the original English cast has returned to do this project, I’ll shut up about it...

For now.

Was this a great reboot? That’s your call to make. For me, it’s too early to tell as there’s only been 24 episodes and none of them are the classic Kyoto arc. It’s too preliminary to call it a masterpiece or trash. Manga readers are somewhat split as they will always find fault with everything. Not every anime adaptation is going to do everything by the book and that’s their conniption. I read the manga too and I wasn’t picky about the adaptation. It’s not like they skipped 50 chapters and went right into unknown territory.

And before you say, “Oh, there goes Medea again bashing Rozen Maiden 2013”. NO! I was actually poking at The Promised Neverland this time.

Thankfully, Rurouni Kenshin was done well. The art was beautiful. LIDENFILMS did a spectacular job. If you’re not familiar with the studio, they have recently done Call of the Night and Tokyo Revengers. The music was great. Every opening and ending were bangers. Reol was the real stand-out star in that department. They kept the language Kenshin uses when he speaks, that they did. I’m satisfied. I know more fans would want to see some more footage of Kenshin back when he was the notorious Battosai. I’m just going to say to be patient. You’ll see some stuff soon enough. And if you’re an impatient fuck, the OVA’s are around. Trust & Betrayal will give you what you want.

Can I recommend this? Not without having a giant elephant sitting on my shoulders.

The original 96-episode series is currently on Hulu. The recent live-action movies are currently available on Netflix. All of the OVA’s (Trust & Betrayal, Reflections, and Kyoto-arc retelling), I can’t seem to find them streaming wise. Also, unsure if the hard copies are out of print or not.

*(I'm noticing this morning I'm having some trouble with spelling & grammar, and had to make lots of corrections, so hopefully this all makes sense and isn't like...complete gibberish) I get where people are coming from when they say they're nervous to get into Made in Abyss because,

(CW: mention of exploitation material, and short description of real life molestation)

"what if the mangaka turns out to be a pedophile, or even in possession of CSAM??!!!"

And I understand that line of thinking, but that can happen with any creator, regardless of what they illustrate/write. Any creator can turn out to be anything from an animal abuser, a spouse abuser, or in possession of material that exploits real humans, and so on.

I fee like, "it's always the ones you least expect," has become a little too much of a joke, and it's definitely not always true, but to some degree I think it can be.

To stick with the theme of manga for a second, in recent memory Nobuhiro Watsuki was charged for possession of CSAM. I never got into Kenshin, but a quick google search shows that most of his illustrations are of adult, and young adult characters, i.e. there appears to be nothing that anyone could perceive as implying his criminal activity.

To continue along the line of, "it's always the ones you least expect," sometimes it's the well-loved grandparent that, "just wants to make sure you're wearing underwear," or the kind, elderly spare teacher who hugs your whole body to his a little too long, and doesn't let go when you make it clear you're done, and instead grins down at you like an animal.

The only thing you can judge accurately is behaviour. Sometimes, the illustrations and the stories match up with said behaviour, but the same could be said WRT video games (sorry, I know this gets trotted out every damn time); We know that violent video games don't cause violence, but that violent people can be drawn to said games. Just because some violent people play violent video games, should not implicate everyone that does.

What a person produces or consumes cannot be used as a sole diagnostic tool.

If it turns out, down the line, that Tsukushi is in possession of exploitative material, then that's that; I can't do anything about it except make the decision to not financially support his work. But I'm not going to worry myself stupid over it either, considering that personal experience has taught me that even the nicest people, with the most 'pure/innocent' or even 'boring' taste in fiction/art can be rotten inside.

I got a question to ask.

I wanted to watch the Rurouni Kenshin anime. But I have learned about the dirt behind the creator Nobuhiro Watsuki. Now I don’t know because people have been saying “don’t support it,” or the reboot because it’s getting a reboot. Am I contributing to something awful and giving Watsuki money if I watch the OG series? I don’t know. It sucks because I really wanted to watch it because it looks so good but now I don’t know.

I had to look up who that was because I didn’t know. After reading about his child porn controversy on Wikipedia I’d say just pirate the anime and manga if you can find a site that hosts it if you don’t want to support him. You’re not an awful person. Don’t let people call you that.

I didn’t really spend a whole lot of time looking up about this guy so it’s totally up to you what you want to do. I can’t really find a decent news story about when he was arrested or if he ever pleaded guilty. Just about the police raid and the fine he had to pay. I’m guessing it was probably real child porn and not the school girl type of role play with grown women. But It’s also been 4 years and he could have changed tune since then and learned from his awful mistake and got help—as much as I hate pedophiles and anyone who hurts children.

The new kenshin anime news has brought up so many feelings from that first year after the news broke. I feel fucking terrible to be honest like it feels just as intense as though it happened yesterday. I went on twitter(i know, cesspool website) and left and right people were talking about it and its not like i even disagree with everything they're saying (it shouldnt be made, people shouldnt watch it, watsuki will rot in hell forever with those that support him etc) but i am just heartbroken again and again at how something that used to bring me so much joy to share with others is spoken about like this. Since 2017 i have been able to enjoy kenshin and even make new positive memories with others revolving around it but its just.. its hard right now. Especially with the guilt. I am mostly past the guilt of having loved kenshin and given watsuki money in the past because i couldnt have known, but i feel guilt in waves still at how i am unable to cut kenshin out of my heart.

I do hope on a different emotional note that something is done eventually about the rampant pedophilia problem in the manga industry. Seeing how little anyone gives a fuck and how almost every major mangaka in the business continues to celebrate watsuki makes me furious. Naruto, inuyasha, bleach, toriko, one piece, trigun, mha, the list goes on for fucking ever none of those people care in the slightest. Imagine if any other industry was like that

I guess for now i just need to keep on reminding myself that

it is not wrong to love something that brought and continues to bring me immeasurable comfort.

I couldn't have known, and it is not my fault. (I know it is not my fault logically, but i have ocd and trauma from csa so. If you get it you get it.)

Loving kenshin does not make me a bad person.

the RK live action movies are praised for their action scenes and like sure the stunt work and choreography are nice up to a point

but they have some long af fight scenes to the point it gets boring to watch like I don't care anymore

the far larger issue however is the mooks

there are so many mooks in the live action movies to beat up, they're added to Kanryuu's mansion, they're added to the Kyoto fight, they're added to Jinchuu, it's a genuine narrative problem

the obvious reason is because it sucks out a lot of the emotional impetus in the fights because there's so many of them dragging the fights out for no reason except for rule of cool because Kenshin's swore style is supposed to pit the one against the many

but the bigger issue is the thematic and characterization problems it generates for the main characters, especially Kenshin

there are mooks in the manga but really not that many for the amount of battles that occur given that it's a battle manga, it's basically Hiruma's men, the yakuza that have Yahiko, Shishio's men, and then the guys in Sano's hometown (Enishi has underlings but they don't fight)

in terms of characterization, Kenshin is a pacifist, he tells mooks they are free to leave if they do not want to be hurt that's what makes it exceptional in the village Shishio took over that Kenshin says I'm not going to spare a single one of you

(and it doesn't even happen on screen, it cuts away to Saitou protecting Misao and the kid by stabbing a man through the head and it kind of makes it feel like Kenshin's outburst of anger against these nameless men is more shameful than Saitou's lethal violence in the defense of others)

but when they attack Shishio's ship, Kenshin delays the fight with Shishio so Shishio's mooks may escape and Saitou lets him do it, no one fights the mooks in Kyoto either, not the police or the Oniwabanshu or the rest of the Kenshin-gumi, they get chased off from starting fires by citizens shouting at them and Kaoru also offers to take care of any of the wounded after defeating Kamatari

and Enishi's mooks don't fight, but Sano fights the mooks in his hometown to protect his family and because of the Ishin Shishi politician paying them and exploiting the town and it's mostly off screen again

and maybe Watsuki just didn't want to draw a lot of mook fighting but the result ends up supporting the themes of the series

almost all of the people the main group fights especially as the series goes on are named, they have desires and backstories, and especially with Enishi's group they have particular grievances against Kenshin though some are more petty than others

if you're going to have a character atoning for killing out of empathy for his enemies then his enemies have to be people both to him and the audience like it's good that the audience likes Aoshi and Soujirou because it means this worked

this doesn't work if you have him carelessly beating up nameless men all the time and don't show him or his companions offering compassion to them

the fighting in the live action movies detracts from the themes rather than supports them

I like one piece but everyone knows oda is notorious for supporting known pedophiles in the manga industry. Nothing I can add to it that hasn’t been said a million times before

I went through your anime tag and I’m mindblown at some of the information that was mentioned. I don’t pay too much attention to anime because I was aware that most of it contained a lot of sexual themes and blasphemous material towards Christians so I don’t look at it’s content too well, just small things here and there ( for example, I only like one character from BHNA which is todoroki and that’s it. I don’t even know what’s going on in the show besides the usual violence nor do I sit and watch it on my own time to understand. ) But after looking at your tag, discernment is going to be on high for everything.

I didn’t know who Watsuki was nor did I know he made that Kenshin ( ? ) anime and movie. I wish I knew this sooner, because now it’s going to make me start doing more detailed research on anything I decide to watch. And to find out how openly blatant CP is normalized within Japanese law and society is making me want to side eye that country more. I always wanted to visit for the scenery, food, and cultural aspects and thought of living there because of natural fascination. But Idk after finding out about this stuff.

Honestly thank you for being super informative and discussing this. This anime / manga content is — for lack of words bleh. Definitely making sure I have research on hand before I check anything out.

I remember when I came out as Christian on tumblr I quickly started to attack anime culture, and I got a lot of backlash from my (now former) newfound Christian friends lol But I always knew I was telling the truth, ad that a few people would eventually get my point.

The whole nekketsu genre (of which BNHA belongs it) is a cesspool of glorified sins. You talk about a few things here and there, but the whole concept of kids with superpowers fighting each other is deranged. The whole nekketsu genre relies on violence, boastfulness, aggressiveness and rebellion ; what type of fulfillment would it bring to Christians?

Oh and at some point people need to grow up and stop reading material whose main characters are like half (if not 1/3) their age, that's embarrassing.... "b-but in Japan they read manga at every age!!" Go in Japan and see how women are supposed to act like brainless children to sound attractive, and where a concerning amount of grown men use this material as an escapist cope to put up with their bleak existence & social unfulfillment. Western people didn't need it to begin with ; but interestingly enough we are now festering the same symptoms by the consumption of such media ; a downward spiral. Anime culture isn't supposed to thrive in a well-balanced society. Kids don't wake up one day and decide to dress & impersonate fictional characters. This is objectively lunacy.

And yes, Watsuki is "Rurouni Kenshin" mangaka. This dude got back to business after retiring for a few weeks and paying a 2000€ fine for possession of child porn.....FYI he got supported by some of the biggest names of the manga industry (Masahi Kishimoto "Naruto", Eichiiro Oda 'One Piece" -who's also Watsuki's former assistant-, Tite Kubo "Bleach", Takeshi Obata, illustrator of "Death Note") so that he could get his career back on track ...God knows what skeletons these scrotes have in their closets to defend a predator that hard.... His eventually resumed his manga shortly after the sentence got ruled, a movie adaptation of his manga got released and everyone forgot about it....

Christianism is RADICAL - we cannot afford being wishy-washy about things - either you refuse to watch anything against Christian values (=witchcraft, violence, fornication, etc) either or you don't. But you can't be like "yeah this show is sinful but I'll skip a few episodes and that will be ok" as if the "spirit" behind this content wasn't widespread into the WHOLE show. IDK if you ever felt that, but sometimes I stopped watching/listening to something, SEEMINGLY innocuous because I felt (i.e the Holy Spirit in me) felt something inside this piece of entertainment was off. God literally shown me in a dream to stop listening to a specific artist (Kyary Pamyu Pamyu) because the spirit behind her music was demonic. Every Christian should feel this way with openly demonic show, but somehow they don't, and it makes me really wonder if they truly have the Holy Spirit.

And sorry I don't know any of the games you mentioned. I think the Ghost of Tsushima is a Historic kind of game, which can be quite harmless (as hIstory is informative) but beware of the oriental mysticism propaganda.
