Kyoto, printemps 1865.

Gohatto (1999)
Tumblr media
Gohatto (御法度), also known as Taboo, is a 1999 Japanese film directed by Nagisa Oshima. It is about homosexuality in the Shinsengumi during the bakumatsu period, the end of the samurai era in the mid-19th century.
Reviews:
This is a well done, good looking but bizarre little movie that delves deeply into the Shinsengumi Keppuroku chapter “The Boy With Bangs”. Basically one of the Shinsengumi’s impressive new recruits is a very pretty young man named Kano Sozaburo. As one might imagine in a place where men are stuck with men pretty much 24/7, young Kano starts becoming the object of many men’s desires though he seems not to be interested.
When murders of Kano’s admirers begins happening no one is quite sure who the culprit is, but Hijikata (terribly micast in my opinion) is determined to find out. (http://shinsengumihq.com/?p=57)
Story: The Shinsengumi just settled into their new headquarters in Nishi-honganji temple and are doing a round of recruitment. The new men are now hand-picked and must pass the test against Okita Souji, genius swordsman and Captain of the 1st Troop of the Shinsengumi. Only two men out of the many who tried to enlist passed the test, Sozaburo Kano and Hyozo Tashiro. Because of Sozaburo Kano’s good looks, many men in the Shinsengumi was smitten by him however Kano tried to avoid their advances. New member Tashiro himself falls in love with Kano quickly and soon rumors abound inside the Shinsengumi compound about Kano taking a lover in Tashiro. Suddenly several members including some officials in the Shinsengumi approach Kano wanting to be his lover and partner. This became a problem in the rank and file and soon the Vice-Commander, Hijikata Toshizou takes notice, observing Kano’s interaction with Tashiro, other high-ranking officials like Inoue Genzaburou and including himself. In the meantime, a murder is committed within the ranks of the Shinsengumi, the motive they suspect is jealousy. Finally Hijikata enlist the help of spy Yamazaki Susumu to solve the matter, but Yamazaki finds himself slowly changing as Kano becomes more open to his advances. In the end Okita Souji and Hijikata takes it upon themselves to put an end to the unrest in the Shinsengumi with Kondou's permission.
My thoughts: Should you watch it? It took me around four times before I got through the first 15 minutes of this movie. Don’t be fooled by the first scene where Okita is matching his shinai against Shinsengumi wannabees, that’s about as much action as you’ll get in this entire film. This movie is about drama, human intricacies, it is all about being sublime and suggestive… Very Japanese if you ask me. The movie is definitely one where you have to be in a certain mind-set because it requires you to pay attention throughout. That alone makes this movie worth watching because it is an intelligent movie and requires extra effort from the viewer. Perhaps maybe it is because this came from a director whose specialty and interest circles around the provocative social themes that border on the macabre and defies censorship. Although perhaps I wouldn’t take this work as one that epitomizes the life-work of this director, it is however a good come back after his relatively long break due to a heart attack.
Anyway, as for the actors and the acting in this movie, there’s not much to say aside from it was well casted. Kano’s actor Ryuhei Matsuda is indeed beautiful, he definitely stood out in the Shinsengumi group and naturally he gets all the attention. Ryuhei received the best new actor award from the Japanese Film Academy for this movie. Tadanabu Asano did fine as Tashiro, however it would’ve been better if we were reminded that Tashiro existed in the movie as I almost forgot he was alive until the latter parts… Beat Takeshi Kitano who played Hijikata Toshizo was quite adept as well, save for that rather annoying eye problem that plagued him throughout the movie. Sorry I don’t mean to be “mean” by pointing it out, for those who do not know, that was the result of injury in a motorcycle “accident” which he later labeled as a suicide attempt years ago. I believe Shinji Takeda who was Okita Souji, did well in being the Okita most people knew. I say this because Okita Souji’s character is quite a contrast to the rest, his always smiling and bright attitude seemed out of place in the movie, however it is very possible that this was deliberate.
As you can see the movie definitely had it’s flaws… But let me get back to the point that it is a very intelligent movie that is worth watching. If you like mind puzzles, don't mind the slow pace, and answers not given to you in a silver platter, then definitely watch this film. Although the topic is about homosexuality in the Shinsengumi, the true subject matter is much deeper and much more familiar. The movie challenges not one's sexual preference or gender bias, rather it challenges the viewers sense of morals and values. Who in the film had the moral high ground? Did they have a right to do what they did? Who was in the right? The answer will probably elude quite a few and I believe this is one of the strengths of this film. Genius and yet frustrating. Watch anyway. :) (https://web.archive.org/web/20080326153939/http://hajimenokizu.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=199&Itemid=133)
The Shinsengumi ("New Selected Group") was a special elite squad formed by the Edo shogunate government to eliminate the revolutionaries who demanded the regime change. It is well known and one of the most popular theme covered by Japanese historic novels and movies that depict the county facing mounting pressure to open for trade with foreign (western) counties. Much lesser known is the homosexuality, though.
From the title "Gohatto" (trans. Taboo), people (especially in Christianity) may easily think that the forbidden is the homosexuality, but not exactly. The fact is "Shudo" (homosexuality) among Samurais are rather popular (not welcomed by many but not prohibited) in that era before the Christianity is formally allowed. And samurais in lower rank cannot refuse when seduced by those in higher ranks.
As a Japanese I know the fate of Shinsengumi, banded under fanatic and xenophobic belief (some form of insanity). That is why they needed very strict rules (Gohatto). And the balance started to deteriorate when they admit a too- beautiful young boy. A hidden theme of this film may be that one can only draw blurred lines between trust, worship, affection and lust. Ryuhei Matsuda, in his film debut, looks like Kabuki actor portrayed by Japanese Ukiyo-e masters. (https://www.imdb.com/review/rw4512420/?ref_=tt_urv)

Sketching during presentations and boring things gets my creative juices flowing quite well... Here's a new Unico character I'll be introducing soon in Nameless Fools! Haven't decided on a name yet, though the name Hyozo rings with me...Not sure though.... I really love Kabuki stuff... https://www.instagram.com/bahamutaxiom/p/BvQezQYlpc8/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1cy3jzqbt68s2
