The first time I remembered HarveyToons while being born in the 90's was through Little Audrey's debut short film Santa's Surprise. The short Christmas themed film follows Audrey and many multicultural children as they sneak inside and hitchhike Santa's sleigh before realizing he's been through a tough night sending presents to all the good boys and girls. By returning the favor, she brightens up a brilliant idea. Audrey and co. clean up the entire house and create a present to honor his good deeds.
While knowing Santa's Surprise was one of the first HarveyToons I knew when Little Audrey became my first encounter, I explored other characters like Casper, Wendy, Herman, Buzzy, Katnip, Little Dot, Little Lotta and even Baby Huey, to name a few. HarveyToons, at the time of being previously handled by Paramount Pictures under both the Noveltoons name and Famous Studios, were heavily considered underrated. But despite the fact it couldn't pull off a monumental rivalry against the likes of Disney and WB, it's safe to assume reliving these characters from the 90's was the best thing ever. Hell, even DreamWorks was in good business with them that they decided to buy Classic Media as a whole and give themselves in to Universal!
Yes, I was in the mood for HarveyToons while I got bored of doing nothing these days. Wonder if I should save up on getting the Best on DVD?

This is my first IF project, although I've been writing original stories and fanfiction for years.
I've included the story description and character profiles from the itch page below the cut.
This blog will be a combination of development info, images and music that I associate with the story, and other musings.
Fair warning, there might be spoilers from the latest chapters here, so I recommend catching up before reading too far.

You’re an urban legend in a county full of them. When you were thirteen, you were found passed out in the road by one of the local cops. No missing persons report. No fingerprints on file. No memories. Just a name.
Oh, and some bizarre psychic powers.
You're content with simplicity. You like your isolated cabin and helping Carter track down missing persons. You know that in theory there are more people like you out there, but you've never wanted to look behind the curtain to find out.
However, with the disappearance of a local teen named Casey Powell and a recent attempt on your foster father's life, your serene, isolated life comes abruptly to its end and a new chapter begins.

The Second Sight is an urban fantasy story, where you step into the role of a psychic whose strange powers have always separated them from others. Those same powers will drag you down the rabbit hole and into a world that is both the familiar and foreign to everything you know. A world filled with magic, witches, fae, demons, and the unknown.
You can immerse yourself in the story by customizing your protagonist's general appearance, choosing how they interact with others, and whether you lean on logic or intuition to problem solve. There are three love interests planned (more may be added depending on player reception and feedback), the genders of which will be selected by the player upon meeting them.

Jacob Carter
Age: Late forties
Race: Human. Definitely.
Gender: Male
Temperament: Carter radiates grizzled, old bastard energy and despite being the least paternal person in the world, he is your adoptive father. While harsh and aloof on the surface, he is also fiercely protective of you and has bent over backwards to give a decent life to a kid that isn't even his. He doesn't talk about his life before coming to Herman County and you haven't asked him, though that might change soon enough...

Age: Late twenties.
Race: Human.
Appearance: Umber brown skin, black locs, grey eyes
Temperament: Gentle and resolute, Z isn't what you imagine when you think of an agent of the mysterious Magic and Anomalies Bureau. Kind, soft-spoken, and exceedingly polite, Z is Carter's former apprentice and something about them puts the old man on edge.

Renard/Rowan
Age: Appears to be in their late twenties or early thirties
Race: Human. Maybe.
Appearance: Tall and slender, white-blonde hair, and gold eyes.
Temperament: Playful and flirtatious, talking to R always feels like a game of cat and mouse and you can never be sure which role is yours. Part sad clown, part trickster, and always maddening to work with, the only things you can be certain of with R is that they probably know what they're doing. Everything else is up in the air.

Unknown aka "The Kestrel"
Age: ???
Race: Definitely not human.
Appearance: Tall, beautiful, elegant, with black hair and black eyes.
Temperament: The Kestrel is a complete unknown. It's impossible to say whether they are a lethal ally or deadly enemy, but either way they are a powerful dreamwalker. You don't know how long they've been watching you, but you're willing to bet that it's been longer than you're comfortable with.

Herman Carter / The Doctor:
Truth be told, Herman may enjoy running certain experiments on you to see the limits of your curiosity and drive for more information. If there ever could be someone more curious than you, it would, without a doubt, be him. You’re likely to find him watching you from afar if he’s not directly throwing you into some dire situation, just to see how the cogs in your brain turn. Yet, during his research, the strangest discovery he’s made is that you seem to approve of his methods. You never even seemed angry when he thought he’d see which teammate you’d choose to save from a hook first. Frustrated, maybe…but he knew you were cooking up something of your own. Trials are more like cat and mouse games between the two of you, both of you constantly running your own experiments on each other, ticking and plotting. He must admit: you’re the most interesting specimen he’s had since long before he was taken.
Talbot Grimes / The Blight:
Long has Talbot known what he did in his time was unethical, even back then when the lives of most were effectively considered disposable. Of course, he doesn’t regret what he did…a true scientist will always recognize that, sometimes, a breakthrough in your research can only be reached by doing some awful things. There aren’t many other scientists in the fog, so he appreciates having another one roaming around, even if it’s one he may not see eye to eye with. You’re the one survivor who he can catch eyes with from far away while he’s in the middle of conducting some twisted sort of experiment and not sense an air of judgement about you. Sometimes, he’s even compelled to allow you to tail him if you need to observe something he’s doing for your own work. Someone else who’s just as passionate about their work as he is…
Albert Wesker / The Mastermind:
Albert, truthfully, isn’t usually one for running silly experiments that don’t have some kind of worthwhile outcome. He built his entire life on science, and he knows when to not waste his time on something that won’t give him results that he can use; so, when he does run some sort of experiment on the puny survivors, it’s much more high-stakes. Life or death, either of you or your teammates. He knows, for this exact reason, he isn’t exactly popular among the survivors in particular. But over time, he’s noticed that you don’t really seem bothered by anything he does. If anything, in fact, you seem to encourage him. He slowly started trying to press your buttons to see where exactly you’d draw the line regarding unethical experimentation. He hasn’t found it yet, but he will…

(for the ask game from a few days ago) could you do Victor for 2, 12, 15 and 24
2. Favorite canon thing about this character?
i had to sit and think because this one was so hard to narrow down. on a surface level i find all sorts of things about him endearing from his mannerisms to his speech patterns, but i think the thing that got me hooked on victor as a character was how emotionally demonstrative he is, particularly for a male protagonist. this also extends generally to his love for nature, for his friends, and his siblings (disregarding the incestuous implications of his relationship with elizabeth...)
i think this was only intensified for me when i started delving into frankenstein academic essays and analysis and then, by extension, the frankenstein fandom, and found that en masse it was people criticizing victor for just what interested me to him in the first place: being emotional, and therefore somehow melodramatic, overreacting, self-centered, egotistical, etc. it was this kind of climate of victor-hate that pushed me to make a tumblr account in the first place. someone had to be the sole victor defender in this barren wasteland

this is silly and probably not the serious answer you were looking for but like 2 years ago a dear friend of mine and i were joking about how you could catch victor frankenstein in a mouse trap and ever since then his assigned fursona in my head has been a mouse:
15. What's your favorite ship for this character?
by far its waltonstein (robert x victor). im aware clervalstein is vastly more popular, and while im charmed by it in-canon i dont find most depictions of it to my taste. i don't see their relationship as wholly reciprocated–one-sided on walton's end–which is part of the reason why i like their dynamic so much: its established that walton romanticizes the unobtainable, chases the unknown, and that's why he hangs all his hopes on things he cannot feasibly reach. first becoming a famous poet and going down with the greats, then sailing to find the northern passage despite being an inexperienced captain, all the while hoping for this impossibly idealistic image of a companion who would be perfectly tailored to his interests and manners, and then, against all reason, he finds this in victor, wherein victor becomes an extension of this habit, who is dying and too hung up in the past and on martyring himself, because everyone who has grown close to him has been hurt for it, so he cannot love again, or at least in the way walton wants. yet victor still has a reciprocated interest and finds a friend in him, even shares the same sentiment of the importance of friendship, but like he says no man can "be to him as clerval was." its very much wrong place/time but the right person.
ive said this before but i think, too, that if victor had recovered and lived than walton may fall a little less in love with victor. their relationship was founded on their dynamic of sick/caretaker, and beyond that, victor would have already exhausted his story, so there's no air of mystery around him anymore–nothing for walton to glorify or romanticize. ultimately i think even if they had the best of intentions and loved each other, they could not have a healthy or fully mutual relationship, and part of the appeal to me is this tragedy!
24. What other character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them?
im drawing a bit of a blank on this one because no other character encompasses just what victor Is to me, but theres a whole host of victor-esque characters i could name because he is the literal foundation for the mad scientist archetype. if i was pressed i think id say geoffrey tempest from sorrows of satan by marie corelli (beyond his blatant misogny), and i remember some parts of emil sinclairs early narration in demian by herman hesse reminded me of victor. lucifer/satan from paradise lost also, particuarly the bit where he says he cannot enjoy the beauty of earth for the suffering of his fall, but that almost feels like a cop-out answer.
lastly–and this one is completely unfounded–itd have to be double dee from EEnE.

Actually if the wood mice was introduced to North Africa through agriculture about 10.000 years ago only I don't see why I can't argue that rats were similarly brought to Vvardenfell by Nord settlers in the late Merethic era.

SFW Alphabet Ask Meme for Surviving the Game the Doctor
A = Affection (How affectionate are they? How do they show affection?) Herman isn't the most conventional of people, or partners for that matter. Although he can be very affectionate to the person he cares about, the way he shows it is... odd. He'll offer to include you in his experiments or (lovingly) offer to implant medical devices in your body to 'upgrade' you. Then you can electrocute people together!
B = Best friend (What would they be like as a best friend? How would the friendship start?) He doesn't remember when you stopped being a test subject and became a friend, but now you are and that's great! He's rather absent minded, but when he does remember that you're around, he'll try to include you in his projects in some way. If it helps, he'll show interest in whatever you have going on! As long as he remembers anyway...
C = Cuddles (Do they like to cuddle? How would they cuddle?) Yes! Cuddling is a fantastic way to discharge excess static! Since Herman's on his feet so much, when he does get the chance to sit down, it's nice to have someone beside him. He might lean on you, or you can lean on him. As long as you're touching in some way, he's happy.
D = Domestic (Do they want to settle down? How are they at cooking and cleaning?) This man doesn't have time to settle down! He has things to do! Cooking?! No time! Cleaning?! No time! Just throw out whatever's dirty and buy a new one!
E = Ending (If they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?) He might honestly forget he hadn't broken up with you yet, and when you confront him about why he's been ghosting you, he'll remember and tell you then. It's not personal, he's just got more important things to do!
F = Fiance(e) (How do they feel about commitment? How quick would they want to get married?) NO TIME FOR THAT! HE HAS THINGS TO DO!
G = Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?) Although he's a lot softer physically than most of the other Slashers, he tends to carry a lot of electrical charge in his body and will probably zap you 9 times out of 10 without meaning to... He's not purposely obtuse when it comes to emotions, but he's got such a single track mind for statistics and variables, he might not even notice you're not happy.
H = Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are their hugs like?) Hugs are also a great way to discharge excess static! If he's been busy shuffling around the lab all day, it's probably better to stay out of reach until he's gotten a hold of someone else...
I = I love you (How fast do they say the L-word?) His love of science is never ending and he'll be sure to tell you that all the time. Oh, you mean towards you? Hasn't he told you yet? Oops.
J = Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?) Herman will absolutely get jealous if he thinks you're going to someone else for something he could have helped with. He's a doctor after all!
K = Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss their partner? Where do they like to be kissed?) Herman is not a kisser, but he doesn't mind being kissed on the cheek.
L = Little ones (How are they around children?) Children are fascinating little gremlins! There's a never ending amount of things to learn from them! But keep them away from his lab equipment. They're grabby and clumsy, and that stuff isn't cheap.
M = Morning (How are mornings spent with them?) Fast paced and full of weird, random, and sometimes seemingly pointless experiments, usually involving breakfast food.
N = Night (How are nights spent with them?) Often incredibly late. Nothing makes a man lose track of time like the riveting data of his latest tests. How did that mouse's head explode, and can he get the same results on something bigger?
O = Open (When would they start revealing things about themselves? Do they say everything all at once or wait a while to reveal things slowly?) He probably won't even realize he's revealing it. Get him talking, and he won't stop. That often ends up with him going on rants about people he used to work with, tests that didn't turn out well, and how a certain pattern reminds him of his grandmother's couch.
P = Patience (How easily angered are they?) Other than the things that make him jealous, nothing angers him more than a promising experiment suddenly going belly up with no clear reason as to why.
Q = Quizzes (How much would they remember about their partner? Do they remember every little detail they mention in passing, or do they kind of forget everything?) Herman usually doesn't bother to remember what day of the week it is much less what specific dates are important. Unless it correlates to an important scientific breakthrough that is.
R = Remember (What is their favorite moment in their relationship?) When you led him to a breakthrough in a project he'd been struggling with. It had simply never occurred to him to get an outsiders perspective, but he'll cherish that moment forever.
S = Security (How protective are they? How would they protect their partner? How would they like to be protected?) It may take him a while to realize you're in danger, unless he's the cause. He'll do his best to keep you safe even if that means putting himself in danger. The only thing he wants you to protect is his research. He can handle himself, but if anyone gets into his files, there's going to be hell to pay.
T = Try (How much effort would they put into dates, anniversaries, gifts, everyday tasks?) If he remembers (it'll be very last minute) he'll scramble to put something special together for you. Hey, at least he tries!
U = Ugly (What would be some bad habits of theirs?) He simply doesn't understand why no one likes his beside manner. What do you mean, your hands are cold and 'shocky'? That's not a thing! Maybe he should run some tests to find out what your problem is.
V = Vanity (How concerned are they with their looks?) He doesn't have time for that nonsense! Looks are secondary to results!
W = Whole (Would they feel incomplete without their partner?) Only if he notices they're missing.
X = Xtra (A random headcanon for them.) Herman has fired more computers than any other Slasher around. He has to be incredibly careful not to overload them, but eventually forgets to discharge any excess electricity in his body and there goes another one! Due to this, almost all his research is handwritten and stored in carefully coded filing cabinets that take up almost every room in his house.
Y = Yuck (What are some things they wouldn’t like, either in general or in a partner?) Don't. Touch. His. Research.
Z = Zzz (What is a sleep habit of theirs?) He usually falls asleep sitting at his desk after working for too long. It's scared the shit out of quite a few of the others when on occasions they've gone to talk to him, then realized he wasn't actually awake.

Roger Rabbit theory: the allegory of Judge Doom
Now, if you haven’t seen the 1988 masterpiece that is “Who framed Roger Rabbit.” (Based extremely loosely on the 1981 book “Who censored Roger Rabbit”) I can’t recommend it enough. It’s a great time had by both family and individually. But I want to talk about one of the characters invented for the movie, (As the original book was VERY different) The very imposing and remembered Judge Doom. Total spoilers for this character ahead, just letting you know now.
Judge Doom is the main villain of the piece with an insane plan to build the first freeway (This movie being set in 1947) clear through “Toon Town,” a location housing hundreds of “Toons” IE, Quite literally, Mickey Mouse, Donald, Goofy, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, and so on.
This includes a number of original characters, such as the titular Roger, his wife Jessica, Baby Herman (Who works with Roger), And so on.
However, Doom’s plan is to spray the only substance known to kill toons, “Dip” everywhere, which will kill all of Toon town’s residents, destroy their houses, and anyone not caught in the destruction or even humans who have a problem with it will basically be swept under the rug.
Why? Because Doom’s idea for this “Freeway” is basically just that. Eight Lanes of high speed traffic, on either side of which are restaurants selling rapidly-prepared food, inexpensive motels, and billboards. Lots and lots of billboards. And all of it will be overseen by Doom’s company, Cloverleaf industries, of which he is the sole stockholder.
His plan falls apart when his henchmen literally die laughing and one of the main characters of the movie (Eddie Valiant) kills him, once but-not-really, and again when, after being crushed, he reveals he’s actually a toon. Not just any toon, the one that killed Detective Eddie’s brother, so he has to dip him in a combination of self defense and possibly revenge.
Now, We can see that Doom’s plan is a combination of genocide and gentrification. His utter apathy for his own people is pretty amazing, but overall this is a story of a greedy monster getting his comeuppance by the end and the winding road up to it.
But what if I told you that Doom, as a character, is not just a shadowy real-estate murderer, but rather, he is is also steeped in something deeply associated with Cartoons of the day and even now. Doom is, in a lot of ways, a reminder to keep in touch with our inner child.
What do I mean? I’m glad you asked. Think about how dismissive Doom is to the plight of Toons, who are basically the people being used as a metaphor for racism in the story. He doesn’t care that all of these people, animals, and living, thinking, feeling objects, are going to vanish at his hand. In fact, he relishes the idea all in the name of making money.
These days, we see these kinds of people. Those that say things like “A good reminder that cartoons are inappropriate for anyone but children.” “I’m a mature adult, I must do mature adult things, your silly fantasies aren’t a good use of anyone’s time!” “If you play video games, you’re a loser!” Those sorts. I would posit that Doom is a metaphor for this line of thinking.
Doom is also a toon though. In doing what he was about to do, he’d be reduced to one of the only of his kind in LA, possibly a great deal of the US. But he doesn’t care. The carrot at the end of his stick is money. Money. Money. Money. Now, of course greedy people exist, and and some of you would probably sell out some people if the money was good enough. Even if you know it’s wrong to do it.
Doom, though, he isn’t just selling out his own kind. He’s selling out and trying to directly kill icons of childhood, artistry, mirth, fantasy, and lastly, fun. He’s not so much the fun police as he is the fun executioner. That’s his hand holding that cartoon shoe in the barrel of dip.
But why? Why would someone go to all that trouble just to kill all of those things? It comes back to his answer in the first place. Money. His obsession with getting as much of it as possible, lives, livelihoods and people in the crossfire or in the way be damned, he’s getting it. If to do so, he has to leave behind or exterminate those who don’t know how great the stuff is, that’s what has to be done.
This is why Doom hides himself as a human for most of the movie, so people won’t think he’s some jokester goofball. That he is worth taking seriously and respecting/fearing as a person. This is supported by a line Roger drops, “We Toons may act idiotic, but we’re not stupid.” Doom, as a killer who still used a cartoony means of doing it on Eddie’s brother, (Dropping Piano from fifteen stories) was trying to start a new life with all the money from the bank job that lead to the chase where the death happened and was trying to leave being a toon behind in the pursuit of being seen more seriously and forcing the world to mature with him.
That’s what he wants, maybe not as much as the money, but it’s definitely as a supreme bonus. He’s basically trying to kill what remains of himself from when he was still just a Toon. From when he was younger. Maybe he considers that life some kind of childhood he HAD to grow beyond. What is the best way to make sure you move on from something? Eliminate the ability to go back to it. Hence his plan.
When Eddie flattens Doom with a steam roller only for him to stand up and out himself, he embraces his toon powers in a last-ditch effort to make his plan go off without any further hitches, but if he didn’t need to, he never would have considering he doesn’t in the fight up to that point.
He struggles against his innate Toon-ness. He’s not just an evil whack job, he’s a self-hating monster.
Doom is a walking metaphor, one about keeping whimsy. He made his life all about money and in the end killed a man, injured another, drove people out of business, and nearly committed some variant of war crime, I’m pretty sure. Doom is the ultimate metaphor for forcing yourself to be an adult and making your life all about money. Eventually, it’s the cartoons that stop him as well, as Eddie uses a prop mallet with a boxing glove to trigger the dip spray that kills him.
The only way to stop judge doom was with something whimsical and fun on top of the evil he was intending to do. With the very things he was trying to destroy, and using to destroy them. His undoing was half his own doing. It’s all very poetic in that way. Remember, don’t be like Judge Doom. Embrace the fun things while you have ‘em and keep them close to your heart. Don’t make money and just “Being an adult” your only goal. Lord knows what damage you’ll do to the people and things around you.
