❄️✨❄️REMINDER THAT IDW SONIC WINTER JAM IS OUT!!! ❄️✨❄️

I'd love to talk about some neato things I got to draw in the comic! Spoiler warning for some contents below! If you haven't read anything yet, come back after reading the comic!

Let's start off with the cover thumbnails! I was more inclined to do A since it wouldn't spoil the big surprise Orbot and Cubot had in store! Otherwise I probably would've gone with B or D! It has that bombastic party sort of feel that I think would've been super fitting!

Here, Eggman is temporarily staying at one of his many bases throughout the world after the collapse of his Eggperial city! This base is inspired by Industria from Future Boy Conan and a bit of Eggmanland!

He also sure loves his chicken and fries!

A little beachside balcony in Green hill! I felt like we generally don't get structures there as much so I thought it'd be a nice addition!

The design on the floor is the stage from the JP Sonic X intro! It gets covered up by snow after but still neat to include!

Look at this magnificent cast of characters! I wanted to use the poses that each pair had when they were first seen together! I'd considered giving Big his winning animation pose from SA1 but alas no space haha!

Cubot's taped on eye brow gag was one I suggested and it's a reference to the same gag from FLCL!

Lil sonic team logo Iasmin asked for! Sonic sure knows to appreciate himself! Good on him.

And here's a sonic 3 wreath and the SA2 lock on reticle from the mechs!

Amy and cream's spread of delicious looking food beautifully rendered by the coloring god Reggie! I wanted to include all their items from the Official Sonic the Hedgehog Cookbook! So if you want to make them yourself, YOU CAN! (except for uhh the experiment on another panel. you guys can figure out what's in that yourselves haha)

Also made sure to list all the pages you can find the recipes!

This is one of my fav gags that Iasmin wrote in!! Can you all guess what this is meant to vaguely resemble?

Mecha Sonic mark 3? Yep Iasmin wanted him to be there and so there he shall be!! Hopefully we get to see him again!

I remember seeing the story Iasmin made and it really felt like it could be something you'd see in a sonic anime episode if it were made nowadays. I drew the comic with some influence from Sonic X because of that. I think the most telling detail fans might notice is the constant 3 spines for Sonic.

On the topic of EarthSpark factions, let’s also consider the Autobots.

Hasbro, understandably, wants to mostly use characters who sell so Optimus, Arcee, Bumblebee & Grimlock tend to be the Autobots primarily used the most in things. Lately Wheeljack and Elita-1 have become more common fixtures, and while it’s preferable to have Elita get a chance in the spotlight again over the somewhat forced Windblade and Pyra Magna back in the IDW days, it’s still a big symptom of modern storytelling. The insistence to use the same five or so Autobots over and over again is proving to be stale. It wasn’t THAT long ago we had a more varied cast but there’s only so much you can do with the same five guys and gals over and over again without completely rewriting them (Arcee being a particular stand out due to Prime and IDW).

Like the Decepticons, it feels like the Autobot cast in EarthSpark is miscast.

For instance, if GHOST is meant to be part of human relations anyway, shouldn’t some of the Autobots be public service vehicles? This show is Rescue Bots for Teens, own up to it, man!

Like where’s Inferno & Red Alert?

While never really depicted as a gay couple before, if you want an organic relationship, these two are it. It wouldn’t take much to pivot these two into being husbands. Plus, Red Alert’s paranoia could easily (and rightfully in some cases) played off against Megatron and other GHOST aligned Decepticons.

Human/TF romance is also something that could be played up with Powerglide and Sea Spray.

Powerglide for the aerial recon and support (it’s not like they do anything with Wheeljack’s drones in show anyway) with Astoria being his semi eccentric co-pilot and one of the rich sponsors that helps fund GHOST.

Alanna and Sea Spray I had it were part of GHOST, who research aquatic areas of interest related to the Decepticons.

Tow-Line! A personal fav of the RiD01 Autobots. Still following his No Parking! mantra, he’s mostly comic relief towing away Decepticons, Terrans and fellow GHOST operatives who park irregularly.

Quickshadow! Pretty much a straight transplant of her Rescue Bots self, and the straight woman to a lot of the antics of the Terrans and her teammates. Notably she’s the only Rescue Bots Autobot to make the leap to the big kids table in this scenario.

Smokescreen! I see him as a hybrid of his Prime and G1 self. Young and impulsive, but having a bit of a smoking problem which is useful for confusing Decepticons. Hes largely kept in check by Quickshadow and his human partner Jack Darby.

Strongarm! Transplant of her RiD15 self, slightly less rigid but no less by the books. She’s in on the Terrans, and drops by the Maltos to teach them what she knows of what it means to be an upstanding Robot in Disguise. The bit with her and the Terrans is a toned down version of IDW Tailgate being taught by the fastidious IDW Ultra Magnus about the Autobot code.

(Frankly I’m terrified Prowl’s upcoming role as of typing will make him an ACAB type due to IDW and current events, so Strongarm is my choice of having a competent cop that’s doing what’s she’s supposed to be doing.)

And to round us out: Grapple. The artsy fartsy type of the GHOST Autobots who leads reconstruction efforts with a squad of other construction themed Transformers like Bulkhead, Quickmix & the Constructicons. Very detail oriented and a perfectionist, buildings MUST be up to his standards to the letter. Grapple, Jawbreaker & Thrash tend to be played off in work/play scenarios where they learn from each other.

I do understand that the Terrans are meant o be the standouts and the Decepticons, due to favoritism, are getting the oddballs, but it bothers me that the GHOST aligned Autobots especially feels like an afterthought (because in a fashion they kinda were…).

What makes things especially ironic is that IDW in particular seems so quick to reference things from recent happenings, be it from social media things like memes or the takeovers, MOSTH, etc., but most things pre-Forces aside from characters is strangely quiet and subdued. Unless it's something that's frequently pushed in your face like fav foods or in/famous quotes.

(At least from what I've noticed. I get some things are off-limits; and comics having easter eggs isn't new, but it does seem like at times the writers are 'reliant' on what fans got from the games [or lack thereof] than what games themselves produced. If that makes sense.)

What makes IDW's game references ironically funny is that aside from them being mostly surface-level, they're not even correct!

Off the top of my head, there was the instance in one issue wherein Tails comments about a Chaos Drive and how Dr Eggman uses them in his robots. Except this isn't actually correct. Only GUN robots and Artificial Chaos have them. SA2 goes out of its way to show this, with the doc's Badniks in the Desert stages having animals and every other enemy that isn't supernatural having Drives.

And no, '06 doesn't count. Because it never happened. So Tails shouldn't know about '06 bots using Drives. But y'know, not surprising for someone who erroneously claims that Neo Metal Sonic was upgraded by Eggy when if you played the damn game, Metal himself outright states that he changed his own body with his own hands. Infuriatingly, Flynn used this BS to bolster his own BS claim that Eggman never has a solid plan.

I've always wondered, what made you start to ship Tangle and Espio in the first place? It's cute but what's the reasoning?

Saved this question for Valentine’s Day, grab a seat folks, bc it’s a bit of a story.

So, rewind back to the summer of 2023. I was writing down potential comic ideas, specifically unlikely characters interactions (think IDW Sonic 2022 Annual).

TMOSTH had recently dropped at that time, Espio having a prominent role in it, so naturally I wanted to write him interact with my favorite character.

Tangle’s the kind of character who’s seems to have a fun dynamic with just about everyone, but up until that point, I didn’t have more than a basic understanding of Espio’s character. My understanding of his at the time was that he was just a calmer, ninja version of Knuckles. Then Tmosth happened and he was becoming my one of my favs.

I don’t remember how I initially came up with the story idea, but it’s since then been scrapped bc I don’t have time to draw it all, but the story I had in mind was that Tangle wanted to train with Espio after seeing the Chaotix helping Jewel with some missing person cases at the Restoration.

As I tried to plan out little bits of their training session, I started to feel like they’d really get along well and be a fun duo. And then a split second thought occurred: “Lol what if I shipped them?” So I started to play with that concept, and what I got I thought was genuinely really sweet.

It only got better as I learned more about Espio. Like how he’s a pretty awkward with hugs, and while he can be reassuring and wise, his serious behaviors will sometimes be unintentionally comedic, he tries to be the levelheaded one, but he’s still a Chaotix, can’t deny he is also silly XD.

I thought he and Tangle balanced really well. Flash-forward to now, and Tangle and Espio are my two favorite characters, my rarepair, but more importantly just a duo I’d love to see in the comics💜🩶

Your favorite iteration of sonic? (Via show/comic/games etc)

That's a tough one. There's so many that I like-!

Prime Sonic and Wachowski are so expressive and sweet hyperactive children who are gradually learning things and they are both absolutely endearing to watch. I just wanna grapb these babies and hug them half the time.

Then there's X!Sonic (Japanese version). He feels like the one Sonic who has all aspects of Sonic's personality. He gets cocky, heroic, optimistic, sassy but also gets serious, angry, thoughtful and determined. The one gripe I have with him is how he doesn't seem to be as attached to Tails as the other versions. So not No#1 fav but still a fav, I like his characterization quite a lot. He has this aura about him that tells that he is self sufficient and experienced and has seen so much but is also a child and gets childish and excitable enough to act his age.

IDW Sonic is interesting. He tries to have the most positive and forgiving moral compass but the IDW writers are pushing his emotional and moral limits with every other arc. He's being put through test after test when it comes to patience and his morals. He is being taught that sometimes, you don't have a choice but to do what you don't wish to do. Sometimes, you have to let go of the goody morals of sparing every villain in sight to do the right thing. I have a hunch that the writers are treating Sonic as if he's Sega's restrictions on keeping the boy happy smiley hero 24/7. They're pushing him to his limits to the point that he learns to actually express other emotions, to actually stop an antagonist for once because you can't save everyone. You can't keep giving somebody a chance who has a choice but doesn't want to change. The writers are going, "Oh you wish to have Sonic as the King Positivity who never harms a living being and remains smiling no matter what? We'll give you a Sonic that's this way. And then put him through the horrors till he breaks. "

And Boom Sonic! He's an absolute mood! I love all of Roger's line deliveries in Boom, they were done so well. He's super fun to watch too.

Classic Sonic is a kid who is heroic and egoistic and is learning to enjoy life and have friends and be happy. Ova Sonic, Mania Sonic and AoSTH Sonic are my favorites when it comes to Classic.

And from the Games, well, SA2, Unleashed, SatBK, Secret Rings and Frontiers have some of my favorite characterizations.

In conclusion, characterization wise my favorite iterations of Sonic are:

3. SatBK

4. X (Japanese version)

5. Frontiers

6. Boom

7. AoSTH

Alright, so first of all, thanks anon, you inspired me to draw so many Mikeys just to prove how much I love him, as he’s my actual favourite 🧡

The funny thing with Leo is that he’s usually my least favourite of the four. I just relate to him most. So I end up drawing him a lot. I guess a way I’d explain this is; Mikey is how I’d wish to be or who I’d love as a friend. He’s my comfort character. Leo is like looking into a mirror and thinking „ I want to see you happy more than anything else, but boy does looking at you frustrate me’.

Who my favourite is depends on the iteration but Mikey is always up there. For example (from favourite to least fav);

OH YOU SEE THATS SO HARD. I love all of them for different reasons!!! I have the same reaction when people ask my favorite star trek series. The ones i'm most familiar with are 2012 and rottmnt, i'm also very slowly watching 2003 and reading the IDW comics right now but I haven't had time to track back and properly read anything before issue #140 or so...

I love how fun and fast paced rise is, and rise leo reallly intrigues me leo is my special little guy in any iteration but the changes they made to him in rise was real interesting and fun to watch. I also really love that they're different species of turtles its a very nice spin rather than just being a vague "turtle",, I also really fucking love baron draxum like adsfhgjklaiefjs he's so deliciously dramatic. I love the part in season two where he's trying to save some human and he's like "HUMANS YOU WILL COME WITH ME" or something i am LITERALLY cackling thinking about it. I also love mikey in this series, it's a little painful how 2012 kept giving out plots that seemed to beating his siblings over the head with the point that they should take him seriously and then they just.... continue to not... (sidebar but Mikey is so silly in 2012 I love him so much its worth it despite the lack of respect he gets) They are all so caring for each other and the episode where mikey goes out by himself to get the lou jitsu video game is probably my favorite episode of the whole series.

But I love the dramatics of 2012, and I find the shredder Very Hilarious (imagine having beef with four 15 year olds) and also a very engaging villain just like draxum is. Like i was for real scared of him watching some scenes especially when leo got his ass whooped by him. I also love leo in this one (once again he's my special little guy across all iterations) I love how he's a star trek nerd (well.. "space heroes" but cmon.. it was star trek and as a trekkie i appreciate it so hard. I know in my heart leo would convince donnie to dress up as spock with him as kirk). But 2012 also has its fair share of silly times and fun episodes and good action I think its a really nice balance. The writing gets more flimsy later on in seasons... 3+ i think i'd say? (don't get me started on leo's injury after the krang invasion I was so disappointment on how it was handled it could have been SO GOOD and it WASN'T.) (also don't get me started on Karai they built up this interesting character and then all but dropped her off any of the plotline...) But they're still enjoyable and I love the characters and their interactions.. 2012 Donnie is special to me he's such a sarcastic ass (said affectionately). I have seen mixed feelings on the Splinter from this one and honestly I find him hilarious at times in a very very specific way that I can't describe right now. I think its clear how he cares for them despite the fact that he's harsher or stricter at times than rise splinter. I love all the brothers personalities I feel like they are very well established and it works very well they're SUCH a joy to watch. I also like that they leaned more heavily into the sci-fi elements tmnt goes into sometimes, personally.

I've also seen people say they act more like teenagers in rise and I personally don't get that, every tmnt thing I've watched so far they act so teenager-y it hurts. Cue 2012 Splinter grounding them and them all immediately sneaking out.

If I had to pick one, I think despite my gripes with some of their choices I had the most fun with 2012.

I have so so much more I could say and i don't think I mentioned April once im so sorry April but this is long as fuck LMAO

Back again with a transformers question! What is your favorite backstory/origin story(stories) of a character/characters? Be they the og concepts, retellings or built upon. My two favs are primes soundwave and idws shockwave, as their backstories help add more insight into how bad and corrupted the higher ups who ran cybertron were.

I'm gonna be a copycat and say that IDW Shockwave is one of the best characters in all the comics. The idea that he was a totally normal looking robot, but was given a cyclops eye and removed hand as punishment for his corruption was and still is such a cool concept and explaination to why some robots look the way they do. Also IDW's Megatron Origin is a banger. It's been said a million times by a million people, but that comic is so good and turning Megs into a miner turned gladiator is super neat and really adds some understanding to the radicalization and rise of the decepticons.

oh where to begin!! it was wonderful to see celestia be - how to put it? - less perfect than she might appear, like seeing her have emotions and make mistakes ♡ and her love story with sombra was soooo adorable! the ending really was bittersweet, I can't help but wish there was a way for them to meet again but what he did was for the best 🥺 sacrificing himself to save the two worlds and the pony he loved. he really had a heart of gold !!💛 I actually really like this version of sombra, makes me wonder who "our" world's sombra was before he turned so evil.

I used to wonder why celestia was so reluctant to twilight's friends going with her through the portal in equestria girls, but now that I've seen what can really happen when parallel worlds become unbalanced I understand why!

i always love seeing more of celestia and luna's friendship as sisters, they just have such a strong bond and it was very fun seeing more of star swirl too (my favourite moment with him must be when he tried coffee for the first time haha 🤭)

the humor was great too! I really liked the reading I watched, the voice acting was super fun! and pinkie pie in particular made me laugh quite a few times. here are a few of my favourite funny moments:

for asks! do you have a favorite and least favorite character across the tomt franchise and why?

favorites are easy!! its donnie (regardless of iteration, but idw and 2003 are my favs) and jenny :-)

donnie has been my favorite ever since i started watching tmnt (probably at roughly 4 years old? give or take?) and its really no wonder bc i always seem to gravitate to the designated scientist characters in most media i interact with! plus 2003 donnie (that was my first tmnt) in particular is very kind and sweet and i think that probably influenced my opinion of him too! and hes been my best friend ever since in all iterations :-)

i only found out abt jenny a few months ago when i started reading the idw comics because its the only iteration where she appears sadly. im not sure why i got so attached to her? i guess the idea of a fifth turtle sister has always made me happy but shes awesome even besides that. not to mention her being canonically bi and a musician! on the other hand, shes also a human who mutated into a turtle. which is something i dreamed about as a kid. so maybe thats also why i like her so much gkfnjgfd

as for least favorite, or rather most hated, id have to say specifically 2012 splinter. shitty father treated by the writers as the epitome of parenting. my detested <3 hes a really interesting character and i WISH the show examined at least some of the things that influenced his actions as a parent and i WISH at least ONE character voiced a concern in that regard or SOMETHING but the way hes written instead just makes me want to punch him. heart <3

im also not a huge fan of bebop and rocksteady in the idw comics SPECIFICALLY because theyre the kind of villains that actually genuinely scare me gfkgf,, ik its silly and like. they can be fun when theyre not brutally slaughtering people but the fight scenes with them make me feel sooo uncomfortable,, also their solo comic series are. exhausting. and just really ruin the mood for me tbh.

Ok maybe this isnt even remotely interesting to anyone but me. but im posting it for myself cuz i finally have it all as a full circle. everything i like is connected theory :3

also i like eddsworld, mlp and sonic so if u like those three maybe this is a little cool to u idk

so. these three were big internet popular stuff in the 2000s, so theres a lot of fancrossovers. i think thats silly and cool, but im focusing on canon/official/real connections. even if theyre connected by a small thread, LOL. also a few may be one sided but that doesnt matter 2 me!

starting with eddsworld and sonic!

surprisingly, there are actually fanmade crossovers of these 2 and i just like. smiled super wide when i first found it.

BUT like i said before, i wanna focus on 'official' stuff! a lot of current ew animators and staff are sonic fans, n draw sonic and stuff. i think thats super cool! but thats not the only thing..!.!.

i feel like a more direct connection is pretty awesome-er......... like these sonic mentioned/referenced stuff Edd Gould made!! idk if theres more, but this is enough 4 me! im not sure if he was a big sonic fan or anything, but either way its still pretty cool.

This is about IDW published comics, specifically a cover artist who has done covers for both the Sonic IDW comics AND the My little pony IDW comics.

a particular artist, the amazing Natalie Haines, has done BEAUTIFUL sonic and mlp covers!!!!!

so so so so pretty!

and the my little pony ones!!!!!! im not all that caught up with g5 stuff, but so cute nonetheless. so awesome.

aaannd last but not least, because i had to find the old old stuff pre-2012, eddsworld n my little pony! he made this stuff, so yea! edd gould, creator of eddsworld, was a brony. his fav was fluttershy and he would like a buncha mlp stuff on his twt and tumblr. i thinkt that is awesome

I have been following you because of Essek and I just found out that you've drawn Starscream in the past! I didn't know you were into the IDW Transformers comics. A little shook that we share more than one interest and favourite character (is he your favourite?) lol 😂

Oh Starscream has been blorbo since I watched Armada as a 11 year old. I read the IDW comics much later and really enjoyed them. Loved MTME the most! Not into any of the new animations cuz they are too childish for me (that's fine though, I'm just not the target audience), although I enjoyed Animated as a kid. I think I had a crush on Blackarachnia in Animated, but I wasn't aware of my homosexual tendencies yet back then lmAO.... I think Starscream's femme clone (was it Slipstream??) also made me feel things... 😳.

My fav bots are probably uuuuh Starscream, Whirl, Cyclonus, Thundercracker, Chromia, Rodimus, Tarn and uuuuh probably a bunch of others that I can't think of at the moment. I hope the new reboot will be good cuz I really really really couldn't get into IDW2... It felt so odd lore-wise and unemotional... 🫣 The art was pretty tho!

🍓 What’s a fic you’ve written you feel is underrated?

I'd say Behind the Hockey Mask.

Granted it's only 6 chapters.

But out of the what 3 running fics I've carried on.

It's definitely the one I feel is underrated.

To explain its a reimagining of the teenage mutant ninja turtles 2012 series, from season 2 onwards.

From the perspective of Casey Jones.

Because he's my fav, he's my boi and his backstory is never explored in the show.

Taking inspiration from the tmnt IDW comics.

Casey has an abusive father and a little sister called Angel. He takes several off jobs just to get by, taking care of them both.

April becomes his best friend, completely platonic.

And the turtles and her become his family.

It's a story about him struggling alone and finding his place, finding his people, and feeling better in himself.

It's basically recovery, the fic.

I am currently working on the start of what will be the episode Fungus Humongus.

This is a fic where Casey's been a solo vigilante for years and isn't used to working with others.

I just love this fic even if I'm shit at consistent updates.

Anything explicit.

I won't write smut, anything in that territory.

Not something I'm comfortable writing nor want to especially when pretty much all the characters I write in fics are teenagers.
