“Well, it started off quite evenly matched,” smiled senior stewardess Chinami Murakami (centre in white uniform jacket above) broadly, “it was three of them against three of us, although they had the advantage of both being men and being armed!”

However, this Japanese Airlines (JAL) cabin crew demonstrated once again that physical strength alone is no guarantee of victory if your smaller opponents are skilled, determined and, in this case, female. “We were helped by the fact they turned out to be the most useless would be hijackers in the world!” laughed the white uniformed crew manager. When confronted by Chinami and her team (stewardesses Hanako Maeda (on the left above) and Izumi Nakano (on the right above) in the empty connecting section between Club and Economy, the three men seemed to panic. One immediately slipped when the plane suddenly hit some turbulence and he fell to the floor; the second, in pulling his gun from his belt dropped it, while the third simply gave up and surrendered to Izumi. Chinami and Hanako hauled the fallen hijacker to his feet while Izumi put her prisoner into a double armlock. While Hanako similarly restrained the man she and Chinami had captured, the crew manager took off in pursuit of the hapless gunman who had fled, catching up with him before he could enter Club Class and disappear. She seized him by the wrists and he also gave in. The triumphant women frogmarched their demoralised captives past wondering eyes in Economy and took them to the rear of the plane where the stewardesses tied the despondent men up. With their hands bound behind their backs and gagged, the humiliated and defeated hijackers were strapped into seats and then had their ankles tied too by the delightedly disbelieving women.

“Perhaps it was a rather uneven contest after all,” laughed Chinami later, “after all we girls are quite intelligent while those guys were clearly idiots!”

ADEAM was launched in 2012 by designer Hanako Maeda with an AW2013 collection at New York Fashion Week. Maeda focuses on combining traditional Japanese techniques with modern silhouettes.

Not willing to compete, Kasumi declines Olivia's offer to join the fun, but eventually gets involved anyway and dispenses her own brand of mischief. Soon, a strange friendship blossoms between the peculiar trio, and they decide to form the "Pastime Club," where they are free to resume their daily hijinks.

Whether it be failing to learn English, trying desperately to become popular, or getting caught by teachers at the wrong time, school life will never be boring when the girls of Asobi Asobase are up to their hilarious antics.
