In search of the Old Ones: Where to find the world's longest-lived trees

The Fortingall Yew. In a small church yard in Perthshire sits a yew tree which has been growing for thousands of years. Experts haven’t been able to gauge the exact age of this incredible tree but it’s thought to be somewhere between 3,000 and 9,000 years old.

Of some 140,000 species of woody plants on the planet, only about 25-30 can, without human assistance, produce specimens that reach the age of 1,000 years or older. Of those millennials, only about 10 can reach 2,000 years. And of those supermortals – all of them conifers – only three can produce trimillennials. Only one can produce quadrimillennials.

In California, one of these hardy pines has survived for 4,800 years

A Fitzroya Cupressoides tree located in Chile’s Alerce Costero National Park (above🔼), is more than 5000 years old.

That would make this tree, known as the Alerce Milenario, the world’s oldest known tree.

In Sierra Nevada. a number of Mariposa Grove's Giant Sequoias have been determined to be over 3,000 years old.

Been missing the desert lately,

Feeling the warm breeze sweep across my skin as I relax in the shade of an old juniper,

Stepping carefully through the sagebrush, pinching off a leaf every now and then to take in the fresh scent and soft texture,

Waking up in the middle of the night, nose cold from the chill as I listen to the coyotes sing across the valley

A billion stars shining overhead, and absolute silence as a hush falls over the sleeping landscape.

Great Basin Tectonic Event DIPA (Picked up at Total Wine in Las Vegas). A 3 of 4. A pretty classic West Coast IPA with some nice herbal and resinous hop notes in the nose. Sticky lacing that hangs around forever, and relatively high bitterness in the body. Solid.

I haven't posted any photos in a while, so here are some from Great Basin National Park. We camped out there for a few nights and had an amazing time.

It's one of the least visited US National Parks, but it is quite beautiful. The Lehman Caves are very unique, and have some extremely rare formations. I'd highly recommend a visit!

Entering Great Basin National Park, Number 41 Visited! by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While more of a snapshot type photo to capture the entrance into another national park, there were several stories, or thoughts, behind this image. One was maybe seven or so years ago when a friend send me a message, saying she was spending a long weekend exploring this location and an idea kind of formed back then. Another thought for this image was that I was saving the best for last on this road trip through southern Utah with a few national parks there and then finally Great Basin National Park. I was in the mountains and would be enjoying cooler temps...a wonder feeling!
