Just saw a comment on FB calling the 60's sitcom version of The Addams Family "the most functional tv family".
No freaking kidding! I mean, look at it: Gomez was treated as the head of the house. Morticia was supportive of Gomez, never put him down, respected his authority- and Gomez, at the same time, respected her boundaries ("Morticia, that's French!" "Gomez, later, we have an important matter here" "Ah, yes, later"). They supported each others ideas, goals, dreams, and rarely, if ever, called them silly.
Their kids were well-behaved, knew the rules, and followed them. Yeah, they did some really weird things, but they were not out of line with their family. They were taught to respect their parents, because their parents respected each other and their kids (this is a very important distinction, because respect is learned by watching, not by being lectured).
Anyone who came into their house was welcomed as family. Crazy old Uncle Fester, who arguably causes more trouble than any other single character in the show? Chide him a bit for threatening to shoot someone in the back, perhaps, but he still gets his own room. Grandmama needs someone to look after her in her old age? Set her up with a crystal ball and a gypsy tent in the living room so she can carry on her profession as a fortune-teller while still being surrounded by family. A detached hand that somehow managed to come to life has nowhere to go? Take him in and set him up with a system of tunnels under the house and boxes that open only from the inside so he has a private place to feel comfortable while still being a part of a family. Got a butler that looks a bit like Boris Karloff and is somewhat introverted and doesn't like to talk? Pay him well, give him decent servant's quarters, thank him for everything he does and let him know at every opportunity just how much he is appreciated, and give him as much time at the harpsichord as he wants (besides, he plays it beautifully and the whole family loves to dance). Heck, there were times that Lurch was treated like he was Gomez or Morticia's brother or something- I mean, there was a whole episode where Lurch's mother came to visit, and Gomez and Morticia pretended they were the servants- of their own house!!!
And then Cousin Itt has his own miniature room for whenever he comes to visit, and the entire family, instead of insisting that he try to get over his speech impediment, just learned how to understand him. Gomez made arrangements for his mother-in-law, Granny Frump, to get pampered beauty treatments at a high-class health spa, and insisted that Granny Frump was a lovely woman (and if you haven't seen that episode, Granny Frump was played by the same actress who played the Wicked Witch of the West). Morticia's sister Ophelia had a terrible habit of body-slamming Gomez, for whatever reason, and while Gomez didn't seem terribly fond of her (understandable), he never turned her out of the house, and he never said a bad word about her, because she was his wife's sister, and he loved and respected Morticia too much to disrespect her family.
And anybody that came into their house was treated just as well as the rest of the family.
It's never been expressly stated just what the Addamses are. Witches? Vampires? Ghouls? Maybe just a conglomeration of supernatural creatures? Whatever they are, they're one of the best examples of a loving, respectful family I ever saw.

With the recent release of the Netflix series “Wednesday” I’ve seen a lot of online debate over who were the original Addamses, and how many versions there have been. So I decided to compile as much of that information as I could into a bunch of posters.
My answers to those questions are:
The original Addams Family is the cartoon that Charles Addams created.
And I don’t know how many versions there are. It depends what you want to count. Which actors played the characters? How each character looked? By the individual titles? Which versions you think are valid? I think we can debate that one if we really want to, but we’ll be here all day.  I’m just happy this family has remained relevant since 1938. I’m happy to see new fans, and I’m glad there are still new versions of The Addams Family being released into the world for us all to love and enjoy.

The Dark Side of The Moon
This popped into my head and kept on knocking so, here it is. Enjoy and be gentle.
---
Marc Spector was standing in front of a cave.
A cave that had featured in many nightmares and, even as he stood there on daylight, he could still hear echoes of both that day and the aftermath. A shaking breath misted in the chilled air. His sweaty hands clenched so hard the knuckles went pale. And he pressed down as hard as he could.
The explosion shattered the origin of all his pain. Rocks and flame smothered that gapping maw, filling it up utterly. Never to trap anyone else again.
Silently, he turned to the two figures standing a foot away watching. “To new beginnings,” he whispered to himself. A statement that echoed twice inside his head.
---
Gravel crunched loudly as Steven staggered towards the house. Moaning, he barely noticed the gate opening as he desperately tried to not fall asleep on the driveway. Again. “Think they managed to get tío Fester?” Jake asked as Steven’s head knocked against the door. “Would be our luck the one time we aren’t there,” Steven’s yawn nearly sent him right off down the stairs, until a large pair of hands gripped him gently but firmly, “um, ‘Morning Lurch.”
Lurch groaned in greeting. Humming back, Steven allowed the body to be guided to the dining room. Seemingly in the time it took to blink they were seated at the table. “Good morning boys,” their mum cooed in her usual soft voice, “Terrible night?” “Morning. I was out for most of it, Marc or Jake would know more about it,” Steven stiffled another yawn. “Fair enough,” Morticia nodded, “We’ve had an...interesting evening.” “Oh? How so?”
Morticia quirked an eyebrow and looked towards their right. Someone was sitting, looking at them as if unsure how to interpret them and was afraid of that fact. “Oh, hello,” Steven blinked passively. “Had a long night, boys?” cackled Granny Frump as she came over with a smoking mug, “Here, this should reboot those brain cells.” The mug’s contents were a deep purple, foaming as it bubbled away.
Steven knocked it back without hesitation. And their mind cleared.
“Uncle Fester?” he asked with a manic grin, “Is it really you?” “I- ye- Yes!” Fester concluded with utter confidence. Confidence that waned as Steven’s arms were flung around him, vertebrae crackling ominously. “Oh, we’ve always wanted to meet you!” Steven grinned into Fester’s shoulder, “Dad’s told us so much about you!” “Now, now Steven,” Gomez chuckled, “Save some of your uncle for the rest of us. You three will have plenty of time with him in the future.” “Especally after some sleep,” Morticia added as Granny set his breakfast down in front of him.
“Right,” Steven nodded, still somewhat out of it, and tucked in. Everything else could wait.

This was a weird crossover thought, but hey, it’s a rare pair:
Grandmama Frump has no idea how, what, when, and where the ancient grimoire had dumped her, nor the spellwork that pushed her into a metal body, but the entrails did say she will be on quite a transformative journey. Meets up with the DJD by intercepting on their List. Not her fault if the mechs were stupid enough to bother her and joins them after admiring their skills. Grandmama Frump and Vos would get along like fire on a gasoline-soaked body.
She can fully appreciate a being that can fully transform into a sniper rifle. Granny Frump prefers to go down and bloody close to the target, so she tries to convince him to get a bayonet attachment.
Nothing says romance than a personal stab, together.
Just as nothing says “I love you” so much to an Addams than causing chaos, mayhem, and murder with a partner, especially if they could literally use their partner. How intimate…
Vos and Grandmama would croon sweet nothings full of murderous intentions to each other. Unfortunately, they do all the time, especially during meals.
No one understands what the hell they’re saying since they’re speaking in the respective dead language of Primal Vernacular and Ancient French. Except for Tarn… and he’s dying from the horniness.
The leader of the DJD feels beyond uncomfortable, but Tarn can’t turn away when Granny climbs into Vos’ lap, face to face as she steadies herself with his shoulders. The romantic locked deep in his untouched spark practically swoons as Granny tenderly cradles Vos’ mask and simultaneously recoils from what Vos purrs back.
There are some things a mech is not meant to know. Please stop playing with the ruffles and seams of her armor.
Actually, everyone is dying from the horniness. They may not understand, but even the blind mech could feel that raw tension.
There’s many strange sounds in Vos' habsuite. It’s screaming. A lot of screaming. Not of terror. Sometimes agony, but it’s mixed with pleasure. With laughter. High and demented that leaves scratches over a brain module, like rusted nails shoved deep into a helm.
Once it stops, the door opens to dreamy Frump swaying to invisible music as she heads to the shower rack.
The way she moves is reminiscent to the artistic bodily freedom of the Golden Age music underground and the famed courtesans of the High Towers and Primal Palace: strangely sensual and oddly provocative in its fluid grace of free-form steps and twirls. The armor she uses doesn’t help, it sways to her movement.
Vos, in berth and completely enraptured, watches on, smoking a cygar.
Tarn and Kaon gives him hell for it since the ship has designated smoking areas and the communication officer hates the smell leaking to his hab.
Grandmama had commandeered the kitchen and refuses to let anyone else into it. Not even if it causes the fire alarms and toxicity sensors to blare. She has it well in hand, sonny! There are at least three cauldrons always on the flames from a sweet simmer to furiously frothing to the point the lid will become a deadly projectile. The smell can be absolutely delightful or completely atrocious -far, far worse than Tesarus not properly deep-cleaning his most inward blades.
Tarn has no idea if Granny Frump is trying to kill them by an obvious poisoning attempt since whatever she heaved over to the shared table is... ghastly vibrant with a sludge-like consistency. And possibly in its dying throes as she smacks the cauldron insides with a spiked ladle. And he’s absolutely not imagining that muted shriek-
Between Nickel’s medical programs, Tesarus’ ununtrium-coated tank, and Helex’s ability to heat his own internals to a deadly scorch to kill everything, they can take on whatever malice she wields.
Luckily, there’s the usual Energon dispenser in the mess hall, but Tarn can only watch in mute horror as everyone else eats it, even the Pet enjoys it.
Helex and Tesarus wolf down over half the cauldron with large doses of aluminum flakes and cobalt swirls. Kaon eventually switches to the dispenser, but only because the smell overrides the lovely taste. Vos eats his extra blended portion with a straw. Even Nickel is in on it: sipping on her bowl with a side of boron biscuits.
He is not the weird one. He is not-

The evolution of Grandma Addams (1)
Some of you may know her as Grandmama. Others as Grandma Addams. Some as Granny Frump, or Grandma Frump. This character, the elderly of the Addamses, has a lot of names, a lot of faces, a lot of identites - and quite a bumpy “evolutionary” ride through the media... But for the sake of simplicity I’ll refer to the character-unit as “Grandma Addams”.
Tumblr media
Who is originally Grandma Addams? Well, she is very clearly Gomez’s mother - and if the visual clues weren’t enough (her having the same darker skin than Gomez, them sharing a stout body type...), Chas Addams spelled it very clearly in his writings. She is Gomez’s mother and Morticia’s mother-in-law. But a question arises... What is her name? Well, according to the book “The Addams Family: An Evilution”, Charles Addams intended her name to be “Grandma Frump”. Now I never actually saw the text including this name - I could only lay my hands on the description of the character, where her name is nowhere to be seen. But I’ll trust the book on this one for now. So... She was Grandma Frump. Which begs a lot of questions... Did Chas Addams considered naming the whole family “Frump”? After all, he never came up with the “Addams family” name, the television show (and the audience of the comic strips) did. Or would it be her own and unique name, the same way as “Uncle Fester”?
Another detail we have is the fact that she appeared very early in the “family’s “history. She first manifested herself as an elderly neighbor from which Morticia tries to borrow a cup of cyanide, and from there slowly makes her way into the family before being identified as a regular member of the strips. If we are incline to invent a backstory based on the chronological order, we could almost see how Morticia ended up meeting Gomez: first living alone with the Thing and Lurch in her decaying manor, Morticia then establishes a connection with her elderly neighbor Grandma Frump and from there meets Gomez and the love sparks... Of course this is just my silly reading of the drawings’ chronology. Clearly Addams just went with the flow of his ideas and never intended such a grand backstory, but hey, I like to over-interpret. Another thing of note: in this very early drawing, a thick black silhouette can be seen climbing the stairs behind Grandma in her house... Who could this mysterious person be? So many questions, so little answers...
Tumblr media
Grandma Frump looks like your ordinary, kindly grandmother. She is often seen cooking for the family ; she prepares clothes with a sewing machine ; she offer the children sweet treats and tells them bedtime stories... But of course there’s always a twist : the sweet treats are bat and skull-shaped cookies, the bedtime stories are of dragons eating knights, she uses an iron maiden as a sewing mannequin, and she cooks with poisoned mushrooms and eyes of newts. If you look careful at the pots of herbs she keeps in her kitchen you’ll see she also keeps the ashes of the dead in there (one pot contains the remains of a certain “Harold”... Maybe her deceased husband?).
Strangely however, in the drawings Grandma Frump spends very little time with her son (except in one drawing where she is sick and a worried Gomez visits her - of course, for someone whose diet is made of poisonous and crematorium ashes, she needs a very unusual treatment: toad venom, and tome dust mixed in oil of newt). In fact, beside the kids, she seems to spend the most time with Morticia. It was together that they discussed the name of a future baby, and Morticia can be seen playing cards with Grandma. It seems she cheats quite regularly - due to Morticia’s utter surprise when she discovers that for this one party she doesn’t!
Tumblr media
Beside her big nose with an equally big wart/mole and her mane of untamed white hair, Granny Frump is mostly recognizable through her iconic outfit: a variety of paisley shawls over a bombazine skirt (sometimes torn at the edges). Interestingly, her facial expression seems to be stuck in a passive smile, sleepy eyes over happily curled lips, a sort of lazy or almost senile bliss.
Is Grandma Frump a witch? This is an excellent question... She is after all an elderly lady who cooks in a cauldron using poison and bizarre ingredients... She does lack the usual witchy traits (no pointy hat, no hooked nose), but a few elements here and there left by Charles Addams hint at a witchy nature. She is never seen flying with a broomstick, but for the “Mother Goose” books Grandma replacs the titular mother, flying under the full moon on an abnormaly large goose. And Charles Addams did draw her floating in space on a basket with a broom in hand, like the Russian Baba-Yaga, puzzling an alien by her mere presence... An unreleased sketch of Charles Addams found in “The Addams Family: An Evilution” is also fascinating as it draws a parallel with the drawing of proto-Ophelia and her mother. Grandma Frump is seen in an almost identical kitchen/hut, with the same black cat at her feet, with a witchy attire hanging on the door, cooking in front of a cauldron, with by her side a thin blond girl - too old and expressive to be the proto-Ophelia, but still... Either Grandma Frump is a witch or she likes hanging out with some.
Tumblr media
And all that being said, here is the official description Charles Addams gave of her in preparation for the upcoming sitcom:
“This disrespectful old hag is the mother of Gomez (husband of Morticia). She willingly helps with the dishes, cheats at solitaire and is thoroughly dishonest. She, too, is a favorite with the children and will make them cookies in the shape of bats, skulls and bones. Good humored about all and can be garrulous. The complexion is dark, the hair is white and frizzy and uncombed. She has a light beard and a large mole. She wears a shawl on all occasions, thick socks and fleece slippers under a bombazine skirt.”
