US — Albany, New York. Three days before winning the Democratic Primary, New York State’s first female governor signed into law a bill that essentially eliminates the sex-parity rule designed to guarantee women a voice in politics. Legislation S.6901-B/A.7933-C, dubbed the Gender Inclusive Ballot Act, adds “a non-binary gender X to the potential options for gender designations in elected positions that require that the elected people be of varying genders.”
According to Governor Kathy Hochul, the goal of the bill is to enable “individuals who do not identify as a binary gender to run for party positions.” However, the result of similar policy played out on a city level after October 2019, when Émilia Decaudin, a male politician who identifies as non-binary, persuaded New York Democrats to rewrite a rule requiring each district to designate one state committee seat to a man and another to a woman. The rewritten rule requires the seats be filled by two people who “do not identify as the same gender.” Mr Decaudin won the Female District Leader seat in Queens with 52.56% of counted votes, beating Deirdre A. Feerick, who was endorsed by the Queens Democratic Party. When Mr Decaudin faced a backlash for filling the female seat and for sporting onstage at a political event a tight red dress onstage showcasing the bulge of his genitalia, the then-20-year-old advised detractors: “suck my girld**k.”

New York State’s sex-parity rule was put in place in New York in 1920 to guarantee women a voice in politics. After American women demanding voting rights at a 1917 march endured arrests, followed by clubbings, beatings and miscellaneous torture while in police custody, the right to vote was established nationwide. Eleanor Roosevelt and the League of Women Voters then fought successfully for the sex-parity rule as a guarantee that women would forever have a voice in politics.

Commenting on Legislation S.6901-B/A.7933-C, Assemblymember Jessica González Rojas said: “I’m thrilled that the Gender Inclusive Ballot Act is being signed into law today. As the rights of communities are being stripped away, my bill will help non-binary people build power in New York by being able to run for a political party office and meaningfully engage in elected positions. Émilia Decaudin said: “I am so grateful to Governor Hochul, Assembly Member González-Rojas, and Senator Myrie for helping to bring this important piece of legislation to the finish line. For decades, non-binary New Yorkers have been legally excluded from the most fundamental form of political participation in our state. With the signing of the Gender Inclusive Ballot Act into law, that ends today.”

The United States Democratic National Committee (DNC), the governing body of the nation’s Democratic Party, began the trend of gutting the sex-parity rule on August 23, 2018, when it passed a charter that allowed seats once reserved for women to be filled by male politicians who identify as women or non-binary. Governor Hokul has also signed into law the Lorena Borjas Transgender Wellness and Equity Fund Legislation S.8884-A/A.9418. According to New Pride Agenda Executive Director Elisa Crespo, this “investment in trans led organizations in New York” will “foster new and emerging trans leaders.” The legislation provides direct health services, including controversial medical procedures, along with “cultural competency education and training, organizational capacity building and transgender wellness initiatives” for “the transgender, gender non-conforming, non-binary and intersex (TGNCNBI) community.” She additionally called for 30 New York landmarks – including One World Trade Center, the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, Empire State Plaza, State Fairgrounds Main Gate and Expo Center, Niagara Falls, Grand Central Terminal, and MTA LIRR – East End Gateway at Penn Station – to be lit in the rainbow flag colors on June 23, 25, 26, 28 and 30, and lit the colors of the transgender flag on June 24, 27 and 29. Last month, Governor Hochul signed into law a bill allowing all residents of New York State the option of choosing ‘X’ in the sex designation field on a driver license, learner permit, or non-driver ID card. The law is in keeping with New York’s Gender Recognition Act, signed into law last year by Governor Andrew Cuomo, which allows New Yorkers to change their names, sex designation, and birth certificates to reflect the sex they self-identify as. In January, Governor Hokul issued a policy directive to allow New York state inmates who declare they have “a gender identity that differs from their assigned sex at birth” to be imprisoned with inmates of the opposite sex.

Please Vote
Hello this is just a little reminder that if your eligible to vote, please vote in the upcoming governal election. There are a lot of things that are going on in the states right now, or could happen that are / could be really really bad. Now I can't vote yet but I need others to do that.
My home state of New York could go right to shit in only a few days. And I know from the internet and from others I've talked to in person that their families might move them out of the state if Lee Zeldin, the Republican runner gets elected. But others are saying they'll move if Kathy Hochul, current Democratic Governor gets re-elected. Honestly, the state might be better if all those people move.
But, if some of those people moving because Kathy Hochul has a good chance of getting re-elected have queer children it won't be good. I'm speaking from personal experience. Which is why we need to help each other. If your an under-aged queer person, try to help out other under-aged queer people. Because based on the upcoming elections, not just in NY this stuff could happen everywhere.
Please, please vote. And if anyone wants a post about the pro or anti-lgbtqia+ laws in a specific state let me know and I'll try to gather some facts.

No matter what the Republican-majority US Supreme Court does nationally about abortion, in New York abortion rights will continue to be protected.
NY Gov. Kathy Hochul signed six bills protecting reproductive rights in the state.
It’s a good week for the governor. She just received the coveted endorsement of the New York Times.
New York Times endorses Hochul
I am voting for Hochul – the first woman to be governor of New York. My philosophy is never to vote against Democratic incumbents in a primary unless they are people like Rod Blagojevich or Andrew Cuomo. Foolish internecine battles only weaken the Democratic Party at a time it needs to be united.
If the Republican SCOTUS overturns Roe v. Wade then the US will look like a bizarre patchwork where abortion rights remain fully intact in some states, subject to the death penalty in some states, and in a variety of gray areas in many other states. This could lead to abortion tourism where people will be taking short vacations in states like New York, Illinois, California, and Massachusetts.

Someone needs to primary this lady. Is it just a gaffe and not a worldview? Maybe, but you see it all the time: minorities feel trapped between overt racists and insincere panderers. I don’t think that’s totally fair but if people interpret this as a mask off moment, I can’t hardly blame them.

Finance: Credit Card Surcharge Guidance Set To Start In New York
— By Damon Fletcher | February 6, 2024
Rochester, N.Y. (WROC) — There is a new guidance for New York State businesses when charging an additional fee to customers paying with a credit card, starting on February 11.
This new guidance comes after Governor Kathy Hochul signed into law Assembly Bill 2672 in December, which imposes disclosure requirements with respect to credit card surcharges for transactions with New York customers.
“Transparency is crucial in building trust between businesses and communities and now patrons will be empowered to budget accordingly,” Governor Kathy Hochul said.
The New York Department of State also provided a list of dos and don’ts:
Tumblr media
DO:
The business lists the higher credit card price next to a lower cash price.
The business lists the credit card price for items and services, then lets customers know they will receive a discount for using cash.
The business changes all prices to the credit card price.
DON’T:
The business posts a sign on the door and at the register stating an additional 3.9 percent surcharge will apply for credit card purchases.
“This business has a 4 percent cash discount incentive built into all pricing. Any purchases made with a credit or debit card will not receive the cash discount and an adjustment in cost will be displayed on your receipt.”
A convenience fee, service fee, administration fee, non-cash adjustment, technology fee, processing fee, etc., is charged to credit card users and added as a separate line item on a customer receipt.
The price tag of an item shows “$10.00, + 4 percent if paying with a credit card.”
Vendors will be required to post the highest price that consumers might pay when using a credit card, along with the price that is offered when the customer uses another payment method such as cash, check, or debit card.
Any surcharge must be no more than the amount charged to the business by its credit card provider.
Failure to do so can lead to a $500 penalty after every violation.
Local businesses continue to take and utilize credit card usage. Some businesses that spoke to News 8 that their customers’ credit card usage is about 90%.
For Three Heads Brewing’s taproom, that figure amounts to about 70%, but the president of the company, Daniel Nothnagle, says that credit card surcharges still cost the brewery $1,500 – $2,000 a month.
“We’ve always looked it as a necessary evil, we all like using credit cards, I use them myself for all my purchases, so no one wants to see extra fees, so we’ve always rolled it into the cost of products at the bar, we can afford to cover the cost of the surcharge,” he said.
He added a bulk of that surcharge is businesses footing the bill for credit card rewards programs.

Ngl I wish Kathy Hochul would speak out more about important issues. Governor Newsom has been talking about the protests and threats to our democracy. I haven’t really seen Hochul do that. Idk if I’m just missing it or she’s not speaking about it
