The fact that humans and hyenas have two of the worst births in the mammal family and a gnoll has both of those traits combined is frankly underutilized in worldbuilding. No wonder they prefer to burst out of hyenas, their maternal and infant mortality rates must be horrific.

Unfun fact: gnolls in baldurs gate are born by gorily exploding out of hyenas that ate things killed by other gnolls. They are always chaotic evil, and only barely capable of speech. I believe they are also explicitly demonic in nature.
aw man... well, honestly, gnolls are usually such a minor enemy/race in any given setting or story that unless I know they're featured as a main character or something, I tend to assume they're going to be evil with no nuance, and it's like, whatever. The gorily exploding thing is something extra though, I'm not looking forward to that when I play the game. That's so unnecessarily edgy lol

Would you like some Gnolls during these trying times?
I always see the scraggly buzz cut and Mohawk situation on Gnolls in the source material-Let me doll 'em up a bit. Given how I represent gnolls (specifically male gnolls) in my own homebrewing, they're kinda househusbands. So of course, they gotta look their best for their ladies.
I kept the tendency of orangey/reddish coloration in their hair from the source material and mirroring real life hyenas whose manes are sometimes sort of orangey. I did a lot of hair research to make sure all their hairs looked unique in texture, presentation and decoration.
I ended up liking the striped gnoll a lot for some reason. Probably cause it looks like he uses 4 cans of hairspray to get that volume.
(Male Hyenas actually DO get hazed by new Hyena clans they're trying to enter cause they can't hang around their birth clan cause everyone is either their sister or MOM. They spend all their time sucking up and trying to make nice with everyone in the clan for approval-After which they are accepted as the new LOWEST ranking male, even under cubs.)
