An analysis of Esra’s costume design in Midnight at the Pera Palace (contains spoilers) - PART 3/3

In case you've no idea what this is about, here is a link for part 1 and here is a link for part 2. I recommend you check those first. If you already have, here's the final part:

When she visits Halit at the hospital, Esra’s outfit seems sad and grey. Everything (including the gloves) is pale, like Halit’s skin. The outfit nearly gets mixed with the hospital walls and we barely notice the purple/pinkish elements in it at first. It is only when she accidentally travels to 1917 that those elements become more evident. Suddenly, this is the most romantic costume Esra wears in the entire series. She meets a younger, more innocent, more hopeful and less troubled Halit and they both walk around town under this pastel pink light that makes her outfit come alive. Even she looks younger and oblivious to the dangers of the war they'll both face 2 years later. It is as if time has stopped for a while, and though she is worried about the hurt double agent in the future, she can just get to know young dreamer Halit for now and have a fun innocent adventure with him.

While watching Halit come back from the hospital with Sonya, Esra is now wearing a black coat over a light pink blouse and a black skirt. She’s back in 1919 and back in reality. Her feelings for Halit are still there, but she must repress them. Halit needs to be with Sonya, not her, otherwise her friend, Ahmet, can’t exist.

She is also wearing that same outfit when Halit confronts her and tells her that he remembers the night they spent together in 1917. She’s wearing light make up and her hair is tied up very simply. She barely dresses like Peride now. This is Esra’s true heart, though she’s trying her best to cover it up.

The next day, when Halit gives Esra the ring she asked for, she has red gloves on — and he is wearing a red tie —, but she’s still trying her best to hide her feelings. The gloves have a darker shade of red this time, they’re not bright like the pair she used before learning that Halit was Ahmet’s father. To paraphrase Taylor Swift, her hands are now so scarlet they’re actually maroon. This is war. It’s an apocalyptic scenario. There are more important things than love right now. Her feelings for Halit are stronger than ever, but she just can’t let him know that. She even covers her red hair with a black hat and goes as far as to tell Halit she does not love him back.

After turning him away, Esra takes the hat off, revealing her red hair once again. She also covers her mouth with her red gloves as she cries desperately.

She later grabs a red wine bottle (I assume) and takes the gloves off as she attempts to drink her feelings away.

Meanwhile, Halit does the same at the Garden Bar, but he keeps his red tie on. Esra just said she doesn’t love him back, but that didn’t change his feelings for her. He is still drinking off a cantel when he gets arrested and he’s still wearing the red tie in jail as George threatens him and makes him fear for Esra’s safety.

After getting attacked by Sonya, Esra leaves her black coat open, and we get a better view of her delicate pink blouse. She’s learning that Sonya might not be the best pair for Halit and, not long after that, Ahmet tells her that Sonya is actually Peride’s murderess.

It is only after she hears that Halit has been arrested and decides to visit him in jail that she buttons up the coat, trying once again to hide her feelings from him. But we can still get a glimpse of some pink shades “leaking through” in her costume. The concern in her voice is genuine and she can’t help but kiss him briefly before assuring him that she will get him out of there soon enough. At this point, there’s just no point in hiding it. It doesn’t matter how hard she tries, the glow in her eyes everytime they meet his is evident — even for him. — She still tries, though, for Ahmet.

Once she’s out of Halit’s sight, Esra puts on the dark red gloves, but gets them off right before she meets Halit again to get him out of jail. She hasn’t worn them in front of him since the moment she told him she didn’t love him back, but she often wears it when he’s not around.

After saving Mustafa Kemal — and the future of Turkey — Esra admits to Halit that she loves him, but tells him she can’t stay and they will not meet again. They kiss and then she runs off. As soon as she is out of his sight again, she has the dark red gloves back on. Maybe as a reminder of what she is letting go of.

Lastly, she gets drinks with Ahmet by the bar before returning to the future. The look on her face is much different than the one she had the last time they did that. This is the first time in a while she’s not wearing red gloves (while Halit isn’t around). Ahmet is trying to help her move on, talking to her about the future and telling her that it’ll be easier once they get there. She wants to believe that he is right. The black coat, much different from the light purpleish coat she had at the beginning, is still covering up her pink blouse. There’s no point in hiding her feelings from Ahmet, so I think now the coat serves more as a reminder of the “grief” she must be going through. She’s literally about to leave the life she wanted in the past, the life she can never have.

The sun glistens through the trees of woodburrow as the sun ascends. The trees bristle in the breeze as the scene fades into the training room where Spyro,snap shot, Tessa, Food Fight, and Cynder sit. food fight still holds scars from the previous battle that night.” we can’t just let Wolfgang’s plan go into fruition we have to stop him which means learning to control these forms.” snap shot states. “Aggred. It seemed like food fight had more control over himself last night. Maybe the time you turn you will too.” Tessa adds. food fight fiddles nervously in his seat. He craves fresh air food fight has always been an outside spirit and it is in his very nature as a life elemental to be fond of the outdoors.” uh, Tessa I know this is a rather nutty question but can I get some fresh air? Being cooped up in here has my leaves going in a frenzy. He asked. His voice was laced with discomfort.” alright food fight. Just be mindful and keep an eye out for chop chop.” Tessa dismissed Food Fight who leaped out the window and onto a nearby tree. Food Fight sniffs the air to his nostrils being treated to the scent of autumn-baked leaves.” ah, that’s it…”food fight whispers to himself as his leaves shift up absorbing the sun’s light. Food fight climes the trees and watches people pass by from above. He then hears his stomach growl and even though Tessa said to keep his attention low he sniffs the air smelling the aroma of apple pie and other sweets. He leaps from another tree to see the marketplace. Foxes and other creatures gathered around chatting away and shopping. Food Fight drools slightly smelling the sweet smell of apple pie.” a slice wouldn’t kill anyone right?” Food Fight thought quietly to himself. Like a cat food fight creeps down from a branch and lands on the ground not making a sound, he strolls through the crowd and locates the pie stall. “Freshly baked pie! Come get your pies! Coated in cinnamon and brown sugar!” the vendor announces. The vendor glances down to see a slice missing with four gold coins replacing it. Food Fight now sits at the border of the market eating the slice. Meanwhile, in the center, someone could be seen pushing villagers and tourists aside forcefully grumbling. It was chop chop, sprocket,flameslinger,fright rider, and Short cut were trailing behind him admiring the scenery, unlike the grumpy skeleton. “Ah, the market of Woodburrow what place is more peaceful?” short cut comments looking at the ginger, warm-toned tents. “I know right? And smell that? The pies? It smells like autumn itself!” sprocket adds. “Focus on the mission! We don’t have time to be distracted by this warm nonsense!” Chop Chop remarked gruffly. “Se détendre chop chop we’ll find food fight. Heck, he might even be here looking with us or just visiting now that I just thought about it I haven't seen him recently! He aime tarte aux pommes!”flameslinger replied coolheaded. “Wait what did you say!? and say it in English!” chop chop rose up having a light bulb moment. “He loves apple pie?” flameslinger repeats. “Hmm…” Chop chop glances down to see a crumb trail. Meanwhile food fight leans against the trees the birds above him nest and feed their young. Food Fight hands them a crumb and the bird feeds it to one of her chicks fostering a smile on Food Fight’s face.

” that pie hit the spot..” Food Fight mumbled. chop chop parts from the group stealthy upon seeing food fight. He draws his swords and stealthily approaches him suddenly something stops him. “Chop chop look at this magical plunger hat! It’s so cool!” Chop Chop grumbles upon hearing rider’s voice in the distance. He pulls himself back to the group before they get suspicious of him. Food fight hearing something looks behind to see no one and decides to return to the guesthouse. Meanwhile in the woods snap shot hunts. He crouches in the long grass with his arrow out watching a chompy. He picks up every sound and scent. His sense is enhanced by the werewolf curse. Snap shot’s eyes glow as he narrows them aiming and then he releases the arrow hitting the chompy with perfect aim.” bingo.” snap shot mumbles. He then walks back to the guesthouse but catches the scent of chop chop around. He looks around uneasily” I hope lil buddy’s okay.” he says to himself. Meanwhile at in the golden desert. the sunbeams on the pyramid in the distance, bone chompies roam the land looking for any form of life acting as vultures. The scene fades into a thrown room with a gold figure atop a thrown leaning on her hands restless. “ dream catcher anything from wolfgang yet?” the figure asks. “Not yet my queen. He somehow blocked out his dreams from my view.” dream catcher responds.” ugh! That mutt is getting on my nerves every few months he’ll do this damn thing where he’ll not appear here for who knows how long!” the figure growls.” golden queen should we send nightshade to retrieve him?” dream catcher asks. “We might have to do that…I need a new stash of gold and I'm getting tired of waiting!” Golden Queen replies. Suddenly dr. krankcase races up their staircase holding a scroll. “My queen! Wolfgang sent this!” he said. Golden Queen snatches it from him. She reads it and her gold face flares red. “That MUTT! Who does he think he is!” she yells. “What is it golden queen?” dream catcher asks. “Wolfgang says he’s leaving the doom raiders!” golden queen flares up. “WHAT!? No one leaves the Doom Raiders!” dream catcher responds.” doom raiders! Gear up! We’re paying wolfgang a visit!” golden queen announces. To be continued.

Sunday, Eloise learned to drive and later met up with Emmalline at the diner for some lunch.

Then they went to the library to finish up their respective novels. Eloise has actually maxed the writing skill, thanks to a head start as a toddler; a sci-fi novel published in childhood, Esto es mi roboto; and I think a whole lot of tabcasting when i wasn't paying attention to her, as I am otherwise at a loss to explain it.

At the library, Eloise completed her hit sci-fi followup, The Timeline Tangle, while Emmaline published a flop drama novel, Melodramatic Melancholy. Well, they can't all be winners, but how that must have wounded her Diva soul I can't imagine.

I didn't know what to do with Evan, so I sent him over to the Ivanov's to visit his new niece, Bellatrix. He taught her to walk, because heaven knows her parents aren't going to.

Meanwhile, time to attend to my midlife crisis-havers, David and Ruby! David wanted a tattoo. I got him a small set of flames on his left forearm in tribute to his firefightin' days.

Afterwards, he thanked the tattoist profusely, then displayed the maturity of his advancing years in the way that only he can.

Ruby wanted a makeover.

The stylist's original vision

was to put Ruby in a vivid green and purple coat dress, add 1980s-themed Day-Glo eyeshadow out to her temples, and do nothing about her sad flower-child hairdo. Atrocious. Ruby liked it, but I am the boss here, and I did not like it one bit.

Somehwere in the midst of all this, I sent David back to audition at the coffehouse again.

Success this time! In fact, nailing this audition propelled him to level 4, his max level for the Acrobat career according to the dice roll. So, technically, I shouldn't let him play this first gig of his on Monday. I should have him quit now and begin working in the Journalism career that he rolled for his next track.

But c'mon. Does that sound like any fun to you??! Me neither. The show must go on!

Cas arrived home early the day of what he’d since dubbed “The Coffee Table Incident.” Dean still didn’t like to think that Cas had given it a cutesy nickname. Or the air quotes he made whenever he’d mention it.

“Dean, do we need to have a repeat of” – and up go the air quotes – “‘The Coffee Table Incident’?” Raised eyebrow.

Fuck no, thank you very much.

The week after they’d moved in, three months after the fire that destroyed their home, they’d found the coffee table on the grass outside a house a few streets over when they were first exploring the area. Driving around the neighbourhood, Dean behind the wheel of the Impala while Cas followed their route on his phone.

It wasn’t a great neighbourhood, and it wasn’t nearly as good as the one they’d left, but it wasn’t the worst place Dean had lived.

They passed row after row of small wooden cottages. Two- or three-bedroom single level homes, similar to their own, in various states of care and maintenance. For every overgrown yard with one or more rusted vehicles out front, they passed a small but well-maintained garden. Teenagers worked on cars, and elderly residents walked small dogs.

Waiting at the traffic lights while the kids from the local grade school trooped past in their high visibility vests, being herded like day-glo geese by a couple of adults, Dean’s mind was on paint samples and flooring timber.

The house needed a fresh coat of paint, and he was itching to rip up the linoleum flooring and lay down some floating wooden floors. The kitchen also needed a full renovation. He’d have to run it past Castiel first, but maybe they could replace the small stove with a range cooker. Cas might agree if he could find one cheap enough, and promise to do it up…

He jumped, ripped from his reverie, when Cas flung an arm out in front of his face and pointed to something out his window.

“Dean!”

Adrenalin flooded his veins as he looked for whatever threat he’d missed, even as he berated himself for his lack of attention. All he saw was the gaggle of brightly coloured children, and a little old lady standing at the traffic lights holding onto a walker.

He was already reaching for the crowbar he kept under the driver’s seat, silently cursing Cas that his no guns in the house rule extended to the Impala.

“Look Dean! Look at that table. It’s perfect.”

He took in the pile of furniture Cas was pointing at. Out the front of a dilapidated house surrounded by a hurricane fence, a pile of furniture rotted on the kerb.

“What the– Cas! What the fuck?”

Cas had wanted to pick it up then and there, but covered as it was in mud, grass clippings, and bird shit, there was no way Dean was putting it in the backseat of his Baby.

“It’ll still be there tomorrow; we’ll come back then and pick it up in the work truck.”

“But Dean!” Cas stared at him like he was the loopy one. “It might already be gone by then.”

“Seriously, dude? It’s probably been out there for weeks.” There was grass growing up between the legs. “We’ll pick it up tomorrow.”

Instead of answering him, Cas jumped out of the car and ran across the road.

“Cas! Goddamn it. Get back here!”

When Dean flat out refused to allow Castiel to load the table into Baby, no matter how much he pleaded, he insisted on waiting at the side of the road until Dean came back with his work truck.

It was Dean who loaded it into the truck, and Dean who carried it into the garage at home.

It had taken him a solid two weeks to restore the table to its former glory, and he – somewhat grudgingly – had to admit that Cas was right. It was perfect. Cleaned, sanded, and lacquered to a shine that highlighted the wood grain, simple but well made, it was probably the nicest piece of furniture they owned.

After witnessing how Dean treated their last table, the one that had gone up in the fire that had claimed everything else they owned, Cas had gone so far as to make it one of their Rules. No shoes on the coffee table. In fact, no feet on the coffee table at all.

Dean mentioned at the time that Cas should probably talk to his therapist about his fixation on the first piece of furniture he’d chosen for their new home.

Whether Cas spoke to Missouri or not, Dean would probably never know. But Cas’ indignant huffing was almost worth the time spent over his knee, and the ten stripes he’d earned from the belt taught him not to mess with the object of his partner’s obsession.

Mostly, anyway. Sometimes he forgot.

Sometimes, he came home from work early, grabbed a beer and made a bowl of popcorn, and sat down on the sofa to watch Dr. Sexy on the second-hand television Charlie had given them as a housewarming present because.
