"To the extent that 1776 led to the resultant U.S., which came to captain the African Slave Trade—as London moved in an opposing direction toward a revolutionary abolition of this form of property—the much-celebrated revolt of the North American settlers can fairly be said to have eventuated as a counter-revolution of slavery." - Gerald Horne

Turn Off "The News".1: Black Power Media on Paul Robeson
Turn Off “The News”.1: Black Power Media on Paul Robeson
I’m starting a new series of posts here to express appreciation for and link to pieces published online by some of my favorite sources of news, information and analysis. The title refers to the difference between these sources and what is conventionally understood as “The News,” ie, mainstream outlets like NPR and the New York Times, CNN or Fox, MSNBC or CBS>NBC<ABC etc., and PBS Newshour as…

MLP: Chaos is Magic part 2 (part 1 here)
TL;DR: Gee Shadow, how come Sega/Tumblr user PilloTalkin lets you have two dads???
Answer under the cut..!
Equestria has long endured tensions with the umbrum, and though violence has largely been avoided, the situation has become untenable. In a bid for peace, King Eclipse (Gerald Robotnik) proposes something to the ruler of the umbrum, King Comet (Black Doom). They will use magic to create a half-pony half-umbrum child- their own spawn- who will serve as the liaison between their peoples and represent the hope for lasting unity between their kingdoms. King Comet agrees to this, and Prince Midnight Star is born.
The two rulers spend much time together raising their son and improving their kingdoms' relations. King Comet even begins wearing jewelry bearing the symbols of the Equestrian royal family (the eclipse, stars, moons). All seems to be going well, and an era of peace seems to at last have been heralded across the land. But it wasn't to last.
Soon after the true extent of Midnight Star's magical prowess makes itself known, the palace suddenly finds itself under siege from the umbrum army. King Comet wishes to take his son and use him as a weapon to conquer all of the world, all strides towards peace and harmony eschewed in favor of greed and lust for power. In the struggle to protect the prince, many are killed, with the final casualty being Princess Fragile Dawn. Face to face with the king of the umbrum, the young princess refused to back down, standing bodily between father and son and protecting her brother with all her might.
It wasn't enough.
The moment her body fell to the ground, a piercing cry filled the stagnant air, and a burst of magic so strong and bright it was seen across Equestria consumed the entire castle. Once the light faded and the dust settled, each and every umbrum within the palace was dead, including their king. When the guard and King Eclipse entered the throne room, they found the prince laying protectively over his sister's body, his horn shattered, his face wet with tears, and his head resting on her silent chest.

hi Bree! I am currently doing research on modern paganism as a whole, and have come across a few passages about how some practitioners claim to follow an 'old' or 'the old and true' religion. I know Margot Adler mentions this briefly in "Drawing Down The Moon" (page 77) - but I'm wondering if you've seen any other sources on this? I want to learn more about the origins of this 'old and true' religion, but none of my regular resources are turning up anything of substance.
-gasps in Witchstorian- Is it time? I think it's time. Excuse me while I put on my very best hat.
Today, we're going to have a chat about MARGARET FUCKING MURRAY and her thoroughly discredited theories about a Great White Western Witch-Cult. (I have plans to do a wholeass podcast episode on this nonsense in the coming year, so consider this a warm-up. I should also note that debunking claims of an Ancient Unified Religion of Witchcraft is part of how I first earned my stripes as a fledgling Witchstorian. So this be my wheelhouse and I welcome ye to it.)
In her 1921 book, The Witch-Cult in Western Europe, Murray put forth the theory that the ceremonies and rituals detailed in witch trial documents were actually descriptions of practices utilized by a matriarchal pagan fertility cult whose adherents had survived in secret following the Christianization of the British Isles. She pointed to a number of historical personages accused of and/or executed for witchcraft as members of this alleged "Old Religion," presented the idea of "flying on broomsticks" as a ritual activity involving a leaping dance with brooms held between women's thighs (the handles being smeared with a hallucinogenic salve), and claimed that the "Horned God of the witches" was later twisted into modern artistic depictions of Satan as a method of quite literally demonizing these supposed pagan ways. Furthermore, according to Murray, the cult had survived into the present day in the form of a certain secret groups in rural areas of Britain. (It should be noted that while Murray did not invent this theory, she was its' biggest and arguably most legitimizing proponent in her day.)
If any of this is sounding familiar, you get a cookie.
Gerald Gardner was a big fan of these theories and further bolstered the claims when he touted the New Forest coven as a surviving group from the "Old Religion." He incorporated many of Murray's claims into the early framework of his own myth-building. If you read Witchcraft Today (1954), you'll see a lot of Murray's work repeated as a framework for Gardner's own theories on contemporary witchcraft practices, which later became the basis for Wicca.
The issue here is that Murray was working with both a flawed premise and a really terrible use of source material. Repeatedly, she cited superstition, prosecutorial arguments, and confessions from accused witches from 16th-17th century trial records as fact, completely ignoring that none of this had any physical evidence attached to it and that confessions were often made under torture or the threat thereof. She also cited a lack of evidence as alleged evidence of a coverup by the Church and the Crown, or the cult itself covering its' tracks. Even her contemporaries viewed her work as fringe theory and it's largely because she was invited to write the Encyclopedia Britannica article on Witchcraft and the later use of her theories in the creation of Wicca that she's taken seriously by anybody at all.
While Murray's claims are thoroughly discredited, almost literally laughed out of academia during her own lifetime, certain sectors of the modern witchcraft and pagan communities still cling to this idea of a secret surviving pre-Christian goddess cult. I can fully understand why this is tempting, given the romantic notion of clandestine meetings and bonfire dances out in the woods, as well as the need of some modern witches to feel connected to some form of borrowed martyrdom as a mirror for their own feelings of disenfranchisement. No serious scholar of the early modern period or the history of witch trials during that time considers Murray's work credible and modern historians are prone to cringing whenever her name is mentioned.
So yeah, if you see a work on modern paganism or witchcraft referring to "the Old Ways" or "the Old Religion," that's very likely what it's talking about. Margot Adler and Ronald Hutton, both noted and credible authors writing about the modern witchcraft movement, mention Murray's witch-cult hypothesis in their books....but mostly only to say what a crock of shit it was.
For further reading, I recommend Jacqueline Simpson's 1994 article, "Margaret Murray: Who Believed Her And Why?," Ronald Hutton's "Triumph of the Moon," and the Wikipedia article on the witch-cult hypothesis (purely for a condensed version of how the theory came to be and how it has affected modern thought).
I'll leave you with this quote from A New History of Witchcraft: Sorcerers, Heretics and Pagans (Russell and Brooks), regarding Murray's work:
"That this 'old religion' persisted secretly, without leaving any evidence, is, of course, possible, just as it is possible that below the surface of the moon lie extensive deposits of Stilton cheese. Anything is possible. But it is nonsense to assert the existence of something for which no evidence exists. The Murrayites ask us to swallow a most peculiar sandwich: a large piece of the wrong evidence between two thick slices of no evidence at all."

i have a theory that sonic and shadow have connections to chao and by extension the ancients
BIG RAMBLE:
this started as a crack theory, but it became more sensible the more i thought about it.
the ancients and the black arms are not only aliens, but are very simalar in design, specifically their bipedal stature, their head shape, lack of a mouth, eyes, 3 fingers and 2 toes
Tumblr media Tumblr media
chao actually have a similar mutation, which would be neutral to dark
like chao and their hero/dark favoritism system, shadow the hedgehog absorbs dark and hero energy, you get dark energy by doing bad things in his namesake game, that includes hurting humans, which is simalar to the fact that the black arms feed off of human souls.
reasoning for the black arms, more specifically black doom to be evil? idk. maybe he disagreed with something. maybe he was a victim of “the end”s laser bast. maybe he’s vengeful to humans for whatever reason.
during the “project shadow” development prof. gerald created “chaos drives” which is crystalized chaos energy to transfer to living tissue, this was used for the creation of the ultimate lifeform. these can also be used on chao. these drives have different power types; one of them being running.
here’s fully grown run/run type neutral and dark chao:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
these chao don’t look like sonic and shadow, it’s the other way around.
why a hedgehog as the ultimate lifeform?
there IS a popular theory since it’s implied gerald visited angel island and did research, since he has replicas of chaos and a replica of the master emerald shrine, that he may have based the both of the designs off of these prophetic murals (possibly created by the ancients):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
perhaps he used hedgehog dna? or maybe he just looks like a hedgehog because that’s how chao can look when they evolve. who knows?
as for sonic we have no clue on his current in-game backstory, so we don’t know HOW this could have been done so i’ll just shoot some ideas and similarities:
sonic and shadow have the same abilities, despite having “nothing” to do with each other
the ancients have green eyes like sonic’s and tendrils that curve downwards like sonic’s quills
like the default neutral chao, he’s blue (plus the yellow gradient on the arms could be similar to sonic’s arms if ur feeling reachy) (the reason why i mention this is because shadow and dark chao)
one of his biggest gimmicks is absorbing chaos emeralds and mutating which is what chaos does. yeah others can do this (supposedly) but whatever
neutral chao always have a curved tendril (?) and a dark chao always has an angular tendril simalar to sonic and shadow’s quills.
edited:
not really a similarity but sonic has been described to neutralize the chaos emeralds when he has them (sonic rush). his ability to withstand a super form is also much greater and drains less energy from him (narratively speaking). it’s a little weird how connected he is to the emeralds when they’re not from his world. although, it’s the same case with the master emerald as well.
before i edited this ended it off with a joke saying i think they’re chao. no i really don’t. with this theory in mind shadow would at least be related genetically speaking.
i know sonic has been described with origins in the past, but they’re all outdated and never mentioned in games.
i do believe wholeheartedly he has connections with the ancients somehow, since it is a little weird that he does look like a chaos energy mutant chao.. i don’t think his origins would’ve been like shadow’s though. i think it would be funny i think since sonic can’t swim but he’s related to water people.
this was not really to be taken seriously, 100% because it is only a theory. i don’t actually think this word for word wholeheartedly, just something i found weird and wanted to info dump about. i also just love the idea of sonic having weird out of the ordinary origins. okay bye.
edit:
the dark chaos chao (devil chao) can get horns…….you know who else—
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the black arms own ancient temples on earth that closely resemble the ones on angel island and the starfall islands. (built by the ancients, well angel island is implied to be) they homed replicas of the master emerald.
shadow the hedgehog (2005) is actually the first game to display cyberspace. it was owned by the united federation, but i have a couple theories. one: that it originally belonged to gerald as an attempt to replicate the ancient’s cyberspace, since he did visit angel island for research. two: it’s mentioned in frontiers that g.u.n had visited the sf islands before eggman did. this could be where cyberspace was found by the gov. you could also probably combine the two theories.

so like... i was thinking about shadow and maria. and how shadow was suppose to be like a medical solution towards her illness.
so like, i think at one point in time gerald would've tried a blood transfusion with them both, to see if shadows blood would help maria's body fight the illness. and what resulted after several attempts of this is maria slowly developing black arms traits. it started small, with her skin becoming a different texture and shade that was almost unnoticable. then her nails became stronger and grew faster. her sclera started to yellow in next. then she started developing bumps on her forhead, which alarmed gerald.
he stopped the blood transfusions after that, but her bumps turned into small horns still, since shadow's blood was still affecting her. amongst other small traits that started to amplify
