Not an Easy Job
My contribution to @raggedyannrevivaleffort's 2023 gift exchange! @stpaulofsuburbia, I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it!
Synopsis: General D. rides at night. Now, he rides alone. This gives him ample opportunity to ruminate on his position as General Darkness, Decay, Dissolution, Done For, Death, Doom.
Fandom: Raggedy Ann/Rag Dolly Character: General D., Bat Mention, Wolf Mention, Marcella Mention, Raggedy Ann Mention Dynamics: Past General D. and Bat and Wolf, Marcella and Raggedy Ann Rating: General/K+ Content Warnings: MASSIVE spoilers to Rag Dolly, heavy themes of death, grief, repression as present in the show Beta read?: Yes
Being Darkness is a dull job. General D. must operate mostly in the nighttime, only working in daylight in times of emergency and crisis. To be Darkness is, literally speaking, just that. He is one with the darkness, in most cases, to bring new souls into his army. Working with just the din of midnight's stillness leaves him ample time to meditate--no, ruminate--on his position in his travels. Granted, often, his right-hands killed that quiet, whenever he had right-hands, but even when he has none, or just finds peace, these thoughts occupy him instead. He supposes it comes with his rank, and he shouldn't be one to complain.
Being Decay is a gruelling job. So many people and animals die every single day. If one were to think about it, it's no wonder he needs an army. The volume of his workload is simply impossible to ever dream of fulfilling entirely on his own. Come to think of it, the General should probably think of recruiting some right-hands. He was beginning to regret letting Bat and Wolf fall victim to their own hubris. They were both very useful for covering more ground on busy nights. Then again, they were prone to taking entirely too long at their jobs. And pestering him. And, of course, thinking independently. Well, just because the General's army is large, it doesn't mean that there aren't no-good, clumsy, wimpy, flat-out useless excuses for soldiers within his legions.
Being Dissolution is a thankless job. No one ever thinks about the work it takes for him to consider when a soul is ready for recruitment. Yes, there have been countless miscalculations. In fact, not long ago, he had thought he found a good recruit to take Wolf's place, but the dog survived his ills and was back on his paws in no time. And, of course, Marcella still stings, considering that was when Wolf's soul died to begin with. But usually, he knows when it's time. Like now. He has finished recruiting a bullfrog who has met the end of its life. It was ready. It had been for a while. Each time, he takes whichever appendage is the most suited for a handshake, congratulates the new soul on their use of their life, and then presents them with their new title as Soldier of General D.'s Army. Then, he points them in the direction of the nearest boot camp for the dead to have the liveliness trained out of them. If they're lucky, they may rise to the top legion, just below right-hands to the General. Even just his workload adds up. He needs to hire right-hands.
Being Done For is an annoying job. Lately, it's been a bit quieter since Bat and Wolf have been gone, and it's allowed for some welcome peace and quiet on good days, to allow the General to meditate-ruminate. There are still times, though, that he finds himself pestered by the newest soldiers. Their relentless cries over regrets in their lives, seemingly endless questions as to whether their families and friends would be okay without them, what their title meant, and whether this surely would be forever. Even this bullfrog seems so unsure of themself in their first few minutes in this realm. The General has seen this countless times in varying orders, but it gets no easier to tolerate it every time, especially after he has just told them what they were now, for how long, and where the nearest boot camp was. He briskly takes Bullfrog's hand and tugs them along. Once he thankfully finds a veteran recruit, a human whose car he found on the road one rainy night, he shoves the clueless amphibian onto her to take to camp. Now, he could focus more on honing down the gentleman he was after next.
Being Doom is a lonely job. It is true. Despite the countless thousands of legions that he has accrued over the course of his career, despite, yes, the company of Bat and Wolf, the General has always been lonely, in a sense. It is something he does to himself. Being a harbinger of heartbreak, after all, does not necessarily grant one social capital in a world that can never seem to agree whether death is a good thing or a bad thing. He is quite positive most of his soldiers don't have a high opinion of him. Even more, though, he is trying not to get too attached to his recruits anymore. The last time he sought companionship with one, he not only lost his chance at bringing her aboard when he wanted to, but in his rage, he ended up losing his own right-hands. It truly is a shame, whenever he thinks about it. That's why he tries not to. Companionship only distracts him from his work.
Being Death is a cruel job. There are times where he does get a sick kick out of it, one should not get him wrong. The General usually is the first to admit that he has historically had quite liberal standards as for whether a soul "deserves" to be taken. Even when he killed Bat and Wolf, he is willing to admit, he felt a rush that he had not felt in so long. But even then, he has standards, and death is indiscriminate by design. Death is neutral, not on anyone's side. As such, especially since Raggedy Ann saved Marcella's life, he has begun to somewhat regret some of his recruits. He begins to feel sympathy for their loved ones. Each tear of confusion from a child who has seen her goldfish flip upside down in her tank. Each pained caress of a trunk from a pack of elephants at their matriarch's funeral. Each cry of anguish from a man freshly grieving his wife after a fast-acting illness. Again, he tries so much not to let himself get distracted by his feelings and do his job without any feelings of, "what if?" He is beginning to turn into a sorry excuse for a General, if he were to say so.
Being General D is not an easy job. It never has been, and it never will be. It is only getting harder. That is the one thing certain to him tonight as he finally finds his next recruit. An old man surrounded by his loved ones. There is no doubt to the General that it's his time. He cleanses the tattered, shattered, freshly-aching remnants of his heart, then he makes his entrance.

Andy: "The Letter?"
Teddy: "yeah The letter, that you burn it."
Andy: "No you said to me to 'write a letter about how you feel about them and Burn'"
Teddy: "burn what you wrote!"

Ya know I WAS going to make a cool comic before revealing the design, but I can't hide this yummy color palette, so here's another crossover character for the Sinful Circus AU! Thanks for the given permission from @ask-the-rag-dolly, the influencer has now infected this AU as well!
I'd like to this that the reason she resembles Ragatha is because she wants to torment the ragdoll due to her being the most innocent prisoner within the circus. The Influencer had taken a multitude of forms, even once being Jax and Caine- however Ragatha's her favorite one to torment. Not to mention, she knows how much her servants appreciate her recent form as well
Being basically a wanted criminal AI, of course she's not as strong as she COULD be. She avoids the other AIs due to the wanted poster. Also her and Pomni have a very complicated relationship (and she often flirts/teases with the jester)
Abilities she has (inspired by @ask-the-rag-dolly's general blog ^^)
-Can shapeshift her hand into things -Makes grayish bland mannequins with sunglasses as minions -If you're insane enough, she can basically mind control you Bioshock style by asking politely for you to do something, and you'll just do it no question -Give you D I G I T A L H A L L U C I N A T I O N S if you piss her off enough
We love gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss

Do ya ever think about Andy and Annie's dance during "Rag Dolly" and feel like watching that specific scene on loop AND sorta feeling like doing their little dance with someone at the same time 'cause hhhhh I love it and those sibs a bunch, it's just the somftest and adorablest dance to a likewise comfy song made more so by Andy's singing and I get a genuine burst of serotonin revisiting it (and lowkey that scene/song alone was what got me to watch the musical for the first time a couple years back :> if ya also have knowledge on who animated their dance or any part of Rag Dolly for that matter that'd be cool to learn about too! but I understand if that might end up being a lot to share :0)
AAAH i love love love that sequence so much!! its the cutest dance it has so much character and Andy's voice becoming so gentle and sweet right after singing No Girl's Toy is just the best thing ever. he doesn't even like Babette he's just helping his sister make a good impression.
analysis under the readmore:
what's crazy is looking through this whole book - i'm talking about The Animated Raggedy Ann  & Andy - An Intimate Look at the Art of Animation Its History, Techniques, and Artists by John Canemaker (the linked version has no pictures D-:) - Rag Dolly isn't really mentioned that much, despite being essentially the main theme music.
i would love to tell you more for a fact, but i just can't say for sure who animated it, as a lot of scenes aren't credited individually.
for some songs, like Richard Williams doing No Girl's Toy, Tissa David doing Candy Hearts, Art Babbitt doing Blue, and Emery Hawkins doing Never Get Enough, the artists get a section dedicated to them and the main chunk of animation work they contributed. in the credits of the film, Art Babbitt animates the Camel, Emery Hawkins animates the Greedy, etc etc - they were generally in charge of those character-centric scenes, along with a team of inbetweeners, painters, etc.
there isn't one for Rag Dolly, since it's relatively short and bounces between characters. so basically TAKE ALL OF THIS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT!!!
the ONLY expertise i have is that 1. ive flipped thru john canemaker's book and 2. i love this movie so much
what i CAN do is make wild guesses ^_^ and this first little verse as Ann fidgets with her dress and apron just SCREAMS Tissa David to me. here's a pose from that sequence side-by-side with one of her famous (and one of my favourite) Raggedy Ann drawings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
here's something she notes about Ann's first action sequence of falling off the chair (she was set to work on candy hearts before anything else, to really get to know the characters):
Tumblr media
and here's a fantastically convenient gifset from Rag Dolly. EVERYTHING!!! her hair falling in her face, the movement of the fabric, the wonderful sense of timing. also note the lack of eyelashes, which isnt exclusive to one artist or anything, but does pop up in David's drawings:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now to go on a tangent about an artist who could well have worked on that scene, and whom i wish there was some more info about!!!
"The only thing that Disney never understood is that to animate girls, one must be a girl!" - Tissa David believed (along with pretty much the rest of the team) that herself and Chrystal Russell (whose work is woefully sparse in the book but very much present in the movie) were the best animators of 'little Annie'. she also worked on Fern Gully; you can find her credits under her married name, Chrystal Klabunde! she supported Tissa as the primary actor for Raggedy Ann, and her style appears as this distinctive, adorable, muppet-y look throughout the film. these pics are examples of, if not her own drawings, then her stylistic influence in these scenes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
she's credited as animating the playroom dolls, but you can notice her influence in Annie come through from the beginning ('I Look, and What Do I See?') to the end ('Home') of the whole thing. like i said, the credits are never too specific, but if i had to GUESS, then this looks like her stuff. we also know for a fact she worked on the first song because of this lovely set of drawings in the book!
Tumblr media
here's the sweetest photo of Didi Conn (Ann's voice) and Chrystal together with some clean-up sheets of a shot right before Rag Dolly - when Ann introduces herself to Babette, 'my name is Raggedy Ann, and this is my brother, Raggedy Andy,' (i still can't confirm whether they're her drawings but i wouldn't be surprised!):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyway tl;dr: i have no way of knowing for sure who was in charge of it, and no doubt a whole team of artists were involved, (and i'm in no way trying to discredit anyone if i'm wrong) but my best guess is you can thank Tissa David for the first part, and Chrystal Russell (now Chrystal Klabunde) for their dance together - the animation changes subtley between those shots. i wish i had more artists/resources to look at, or god forbid a full breakdown of that scene, but at this point i would bet money on David's part in Annie's little introduction.
also some final appreciation for this silly slide to the ground that Andy finishes with:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyway i'm SO sorry for going on such a long rant in response to this lovely ask!! and i'm sorry it took so long! it took so long, in fact, that i was actually accepted into university halfway through writing it the other day! so thank you!
i had so much fun playing amateur detective so double thank you!!! again i'm probably wrong about ALL of this but it was a blast to reread sections of the book and rewatch different bits of the movie to sleuth around for clues. i hope whatever i have come up with is of some interest to you, and i hope someone learned something about the wonderful artists behind this movie :-D

Raggedy Andy and the Christmas Time Challenge
Happy Holidays, @strawberryxfieldz ! I hope you enjoy you Andy-stuffed treat! Sorry if it's a tad late...
Synopsis: It's time for Marcella's toys to plan for their Christmas meal! But when Andy wants to take control, time literally stands in his way.
Fandom: Raggedy Ann/Rag Dolly
Character: Raggedy Andy, Raggedy Ann, Teddy, Camel, Baby, Marcella mention, Poppa mention, General D mention
Dynamics: Raggedy Andy and Raggedy Ann, Raggedy Andy and Teddy, Raggedy Andy and Camel
Rating: General
“It’s time to plan for Christmas dinner, everyone!” Raggedy Ann proclaimed, a ruler in one hand and a piece of chalk in the other.
Marcella’s five toys all clapped and hollered at the idea, even Andy, who usually hated planning. It brought out everything he didn’t like about the other toys. Teddy was overattentive and used long words, The Camel with the Wrinkled Knees moped if no one liked his ideas, and Baby would come up with a silly fashion stuffed dance like in the movies (and also moped if no one liked her ideas.) Besides, he was always “spur of the moment”, a firecracker, a whizz kid, and anything else that sounded amazing. He wasn’t for dinner planning, even if presents came after.
“First order of business,” Ann said as she pulled in the kid sized chalkboard, “is who’s gonna plan it. I did the Fourth of July, Teddy did Columbus Day, and Baby did Thanksgiving. This time it will be Andy!”
“Pass,” Andy said, closed his eyes and leaned back. “Toss it over to Teddy. He loves overthinking.”
Teddy grimaced at the remark. “While it’s true I do like to ‘overthink’ on projects, I propose it’s fair to pass it on to Camel, since he hasn’t had the chance to plan a holiday dinner yet.”
Camel’s droopy eyes grew wide. “Me?! Oh thank you so much, friend!” He reached his floppy legs across the table to shake Teddy’s hand. Andy, sitting between them, could see why the wrinkled knees were in the name. Andy folded his arms and closed his eyes with a huff. All he had to do for the next hour was half-listen for the chance to make some wise jokes and jabs.
“First off, we need a brilliant, delicious, green bean casserole!”
Andy’s eyes popped back open.
“Green bean?!” he yelled at the humpbacked horsey. “GREEN BEANS?!?”
“Andy, hush!” Ann demanded, pointing her ruler in his face. Andy pulled it from her hand and pointed it back at her.
“No, YOU listen! I hate these boring planning sessions for holidays I could spend doing a million other things than cooking, cleaning, or singing, and now…GREEN BEANS?!!?”
“Well, you chose not to plan this dinner, so that’s on you.”
“Well,” Andy said, “I change my mind. I SHOULD plan Christmas dinner. I’m a million times more qualified.”
Ann sat down in her chair. “Okay, then. How are you more qualified?”
“I–” Andy started before realizing he didn’t know. He thought back to all the little lessons Marcella’s old man would always give her to see if there was anything. Then he remembered her at his sewing table showing how to tell time.
“I can tell time!”
Andy gave the surest smile imaginable with a squishy (but tough!) pair of crossed arms to boot.
The other dolls weren’t convinced. Teddy raised a questioning eyebrow and pulled out a polished, gold painted watch. They opened it and showed the inside to Andy.
“Can you tell me the time on this watch?”
Andy leaned in and squinted. There was a circle of small dashes with squiggles placed around it. What did any of that have to do with time?
“Take your time,” Teddy said with a wink. “I’ll give you thirty seconds.”
Andy could’ve given up, but he didn’t want to look stupid in front of everyone. And he certainly didn’t want green beans.
“Oooooone…” he strained. He looked back at the others. Baby’s head was coked to the side, Camel was biting his teeth, Ann already covered her mouth to hold back a huge laugh, and Teddy stared like General D’s less dreary child.
“Forty-five seconds,” the bear said.
Andy looked over the face for clues. He spotted a line with a tiny diagonal on the top and a little line on the bottom. That must be a “one”.
Then, he remembered something the old man told Marcella.
“This one is also a five.”
The one is a five? How is that possible? Still, a clue was a clue! Andy scanned the clock’s face for some other hint. He looked at the big and little lines coming from the center. Maybe they pointed at numbers?
“Poppa, do the big hand point at the hours?” Marcella asked her dad in that same conversation.
“No, chick, that’s the little hand’s job!”
“That’s dumb,” Marcella told him.
Andy agreed. But wait…the little line was pointing at the one! He was halfway right! Now the minutes. The big line was pointing at a triangle with a long line, three spots down from the one. Was it four minutes?
“You have fifteen seconds, Andy,” Teddy said, his glass eyes and everyone else’s eyes on him.
The four…four…five…the one is five. Five minutes?
“Yes, chick! The one is five minutes, the two is ten, and on and on.”
Two is ten, Three is fifteen, and four is…
“Twenty!! The time is one twentyyyy!!!”
Andy turned to Teddy so fast, it was a surprise his stitches didn’t rip. Teddy gave the small mouthed look they gave when Poppa was around. They looked down at the watch, then back at Andy.
“That’s correct!”
“YES!!!” Andy yelled as he jumped off the table and ran across the room, his legs propelling him over the bed and table and around the chalkboard. He jumped with the sounds of fireworks. “Boom! Boom!” Baby clapped with her porcelain arms and Camel with his felt covered hooves. Andy landed on top of the table and bowed.
“Now, back to business! The appetizer will be a giant, chocolate–”
“BWAAHAHAHAHAHA!!!” Ann laughed with an almost stitch ripping smile.
“What’s so funny, sis?” Andy asked with his hands on his hips.
Ann wiped a tear from her eye.
“It’s just…wait, one second…BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA!!!” she laughed again, falling over.
“What is it, huh?”
“T–Teddy’s…HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!”
“Spit it out!!!”
“THEIR WATCH IS BROKEN!!!!”
Ann went right back to laughing. Andy wouldn’t believe it.
“Gimme that!” he yelled at the nervously smiling bear and yanked the watch back from them. He put the watch by his ear. No ticking. He looked at the face again. The lines and numbers were right there, but the hands weren’t moving.
“Why did you make me read the wrong time?” Andy demanded.
“Well,” Teddy started, then shrugged, “I didn’t ask for the current time. I wanted to see if you could.”
Ann stopped laughing.
“So…he won?”
“Yeah…I WON!!!”
Once he finished his second celebration, Andy spent the night giving lists of chocolate coated desserts and crunchy salted snacks. However, he couldn’t help but notice Camel seemed a little sadder than usual. Maybe the wrinkled old livestock really did want to plan this dinner.
Daylight peeped through the windows and Poppa could be heard making coffee. He’d be in any minute.
“Close it up, Andy. Poppa’s gonna come soon,” Camel said surprisingly sadder than usual.
Andy looked over from the chalkboard and noticed Camel looking down with a huge frown. Maybe the wrinkled old livestock really did want to plan this dinner. He looked back at his sweets covered board.
He wrote down one last dish.
“How’s this dish?”
The toys gasped. Camel slowly looked up, then smiled as he read “Two pounds of green bean casserole.”
“But I’m not eating a single bean,” Andy stated, just so he didn’t look too soft.

Hello!
We're noticing more people being interested in the Raggedy Ann fandom since the Amazing Digital Circus pilot released, so we thought we'd update our masterpost on where to find more Raggedy Ann media!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Books:
The first two and most well-known books are Raggedy Ann stories (1918) and Raggedy Andy stories (1920), which are in public domain and free to read online! Camel with the Wrinkled Knees (1924) (which the movie was loosely based on!) is on Internet Archive and available to read without an account. You can find many of the other books on there as well.
Cartoons:
The 1940's has Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy (1941), Suddenly It's Spring (1944), and The Enchanted Square (1947).
You've got the 1977 Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure of course.
The Chuck Jones holiday TV specials: Raggedy Ann and Andy in The Great Santa Claus Caper (1978) and Raggedy Ann and Andy in The Pumpkin Who Couldn't Smile (1979).
Most episodes of The Adventures of Raggedy Ann and Andy (1988-1990) are in this playlist here, and you could probably find any missing ones on Dailymotion.
From the Target crossover we have the animated Snowden: Raggedy Ann & Andy's Adventure (1998) and the live-action ice-skating special The Snowden, Raggedy Ann and Andy Holiday Show (1998).
Music:
I've also got a playlist of all the albums I've found on YouTube or were uploaded by us, and there's many more of the older ones available on Archive. The old Will Wooden and Frank Luther ones are very charming.
Musical:
You can watch recovered archival footage of the full first production of the Raggedy Ann musical (1984), listen to the demo album (~1985), or the Broadway bootleg (1986)!
If you're interested in more, I'd recommend exploring the saved playlists on the RARE YouTube channel or the media tag on the Raggedy Ann Fandom Wiki.
We're a group of Raggedy Ann enthusiasts who got together to search for Raggedy Ann lost media (specifically the musical), but now we collect and archive all sorts of things from the franchise! Our ask box is always open and we love to find things people are looking for, or even just chat about headcanons and such.

Join beloved children’s characters Raggedy Ann and Andy and their friends for twelve stages of fun. Take on pirates and monsters on the high seas. Explore the frozen ice caves of Looney Land. It’s a magical adventure you won’t soon forget!
Raggedy Ann is a character created by American writer and artist Johnny Gruelle (1880–1938). Raggedy Ann is a rag doll with red yarn for hair, a triangle nose and a candy heart that says “I Love You.” The character was created in 1915 as a doll, and introduced to the public in the 1918 book Raggedy Ann Stories. Her brother, Raggedy Andy, was introduced by 1920. A 1977 animated film directed by Richard Williams and a 1986 Broadway musical featured songs by Joe Raposo.
This hack was created by filmmaker and artist Garrett Gilchrist, who restored the 1977 film Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure for web release. Half the graphics were designed by Brooklyn Williams, of the Raggedy Ann Revival Effort, which seeks to revive the obscure 1986 Broadway musical “Rag Dolly.” Both projects featured songs by Joe Raposo.
