It’s Fine Press Friday!

This week we present In Spring by Edith Sitwell, with wood engravings by Edward Carrick, privately printed in an edition of 290 copies on handmade paper for Terence Fytton Armstrong, better known as John Gawsworth, in London, 1931. All copies were signed by the author.  

In Spring tells the story of the lonely ghost of a man that was killed by being caught in a snare trap used for hunting. The ghost hears the stirring of animals in spring. The poem ends:

And outside in the warm spring weather, Humble creatures, glad together, Creatures that when he was living He had hunted, snared, forgiving

Cried: “We’ll warm with fur and feather Your cold heart, our lonely brother – For we are brothers, once again Since you were snared and knew Death’s pain.

"Una cosa su Marías che forse non tutti sanno è che, almeno per qualcuno, è re di un’isola disabitata nei Caraibi: Redonda. Il regno di Redonda è una micronazione, uno di quei piccolissimi territori che pretendono (più o meno seriamente) di essere considerati come stati indipendenti ma non sono riconosciuti da nessuno. Redonda lo è da quando nel 1865 il banchiere Matthew Dowdy Shiel comprò l’isola e ottenne dalla regina Vittoria di esserne re a patto che non si ribellasse al dominio coloniale britannico. Gli succedette il figlio, lo scrittore di fantascienza Matthew Phipps Shiel, noto soprattutto per La nube purpurea, che alla sua morte, nel 1947, lasciò i diritti sulle proprie opere e il “trono” di Redonda a un altro scrittore: John Gawsworth. Non si sa bene chi sia stato il “legittimo” erede di Gawsworth (avrebbe venduto a diverse persone il titolo per problemi economici): secondo una versione fu l’editore Jon Wynne-Tyson, che nel 1997 abdicò in favore di Marías. Da allora lo scrittore spagnolo ha concesso titoli nobiliari a varie persone che fanno parte del mondo culturale internazionale: Francis Ford Coppola e Pedro Almodóvar sono il duca di Megalópolis e il duca di Trémula, Pietro Citati è il duca di Remonstranza e Claudio Magris il duca di Segunda Mano."
