Sigyn Meta: Who is Sigyn?

A Norse Goddess who is known for being the wife of the Trickster, Loki, and holding the bowl to protect him from the snake’s venom.

But besides that, Who is Sigyn? What does she mean to others?

Journey with me as we explore who she is -- not only in the mythologies, but in other forms like the Marvel Comics, Worship and through fans.

Sigyn’s Origins (Mythology):

Sadly, not many stories that have Sigyn in them have survived till today. She is only attested in the following works: Poetic Edda & Prose Edda.

In the poem, Lokasenna, the most famous of poem’s with the couple, it talks of how Loki has been bound by the gods with the guts of his son, Nari, and how his son, Vari, has been turned into a wolf. The Goddess Skadi fastens a venomous snake over Loki’s face, from which venom drips. Sigyn, stated as Loki’s wife, stays by his side and holds a basin under and catches the venom so it won’t drip onto her husband, but when the basin grows full, she pulls it away to empty it, during which time venom drops onto Loki, causing him to wither so violently that earthquakes occur that shake the entire earth.

In the poem, Gylfaginning, Sigyn is introduced in Chapter 31 as being married to Loki and that they have a son by the name of “Narfi or Nari”. She is then mentioned again in Chapter 50 where events are described differently than in Lokasenna; Vali, described as a son of Loki only, is changed into a wolf by the gods and rips apart his brother, “Narfi or Nari.” The guts of Nari are then used to tie Loki to three stones, after which the guts turn to iron, and Skadi places a snake above Loki. Sigyn of course catches the venom in a bowl. This process is repeated until he breaks free, setting Ragnarok into motion.

In the poem, Skáldskaparmál, Sigyn is introduced as a goddess, an Æsir, where the gods are holding a feast for their visitors and in kennings for Loki: “husband of Sigyn” and “cargo [Loki] of incantation-fetter’s [Sigyn’s] arms.”

Sigyn’s name means “Victorious-Girlfriend” in Old Norse.

Sigyn may appear on the Gosforth Cross and has been the subject of an amount of theory and cultural references.

She appears in the 9th century skaldic poem Haustlöng from pagan times, written by the skald Þjóðólfr of Hvinir. Due to this early connection with Loki, Sigyn has been theorized as being a goddess dating back to an older form of Germanic paganism.

Sigyn in Worship/Honor:

I’ll be speaking on this through my personal experience of working with Sigyn while also sharing some tid bits of basic info from others on this subject. I’m someone who works with Sigyn primarily, but sometimes gets help from Loki.

For those who work with Loki, you will also find yourself working with Sigyn. And sometimes you don’t even need to work with Loki first in order to work with Sigyn (like me!)

Sigyn is usually a calming and motherly presence. Loki is protective over her, but they usually work in unison together to help.

Holding the Bowl: It is a reflective act of Sigyn holding the bowl to protect Loki from the snake’s venom. This is usually the major one.

Sigyn in the Marvel Comics:

Sadly, Sigyn is not portrayed the best in the Marvel Comics of Thor, resulting in her being missing from the comics since 1996 and practically killed off (only being referenced to in flashbacks.)

Loki comes across her and desires to have her. However, she is already engaged to an Asgardian named Theoric, who Loki has killed and ends up taking on the disguise of in order to take Sigyn for his own. On their wedding day once the vows are said and done, Sigyn accepts her duty as his wife, granting her the title Goddess of Fidelity by Odin.

She doesn’t have much of an agency or personality besides being Loki’s faithful wife in this.

Fans wish for her to make a comeback in the Comics and MCU with better characterization. Hence, much Fanfiction, Cosplay, Roleplay and Fanart has been made of others own interpretation’s of Sigyn and #JusticeforSigyn is shared around in hopes of this.

I could go on and on about the subject of Sigyn. She’s an amazing, caring and loving goddess who teaches us many helpful traits we need throughout life. Despite still not being that well known, she is greatly loved by this community -- and none other than Loki.

Hopefully someday she will make a comeback in the Marvel world and get the proper characterization and love she deserves. Till then, us fans will continue to share the love, joy and appreciation we have for Sigyn and her relationship with Loki, welcoming anyone as Sigyn does with open arms and loving hearts.

Comparison of Loki & Sigyn in Mythology & Marvel Comics

I’ve decided to compile a comparison for the differences between Sigyn and Loki with Mythology and the Marvel world. I thought this would be a fun and educational thing to do.

PLEASE NOTE: that with many retcons in mythology and especially Marvel that I’ve tried to put this together as much as I can. Some things might be missing or might not be clear, but I tried to get the basics down mostly.

Differences between Mythology & Comics Sigyn:

In the comics Sigyn is given the title of Goddess of Fidelity by Odin. In Mythology Sigyn is called a goddess along with other kennings “incantation-fetter” & “beloved of monsters” being a few. We don’t know her exact virtue.

In the comics supposedly Sigyn is the daughter of Freya, Goddess of Love and Iwaldi, a dwarf from Alfheim and sister to many of Freya’s other daughters by Iwaldi (Nanna, etc.) This makes her a Vanir despite being called an Asgardian Goddess. I’m not sure exactly where this came from if it’s a retcon of the comics or something fanmade. As for mythology, all we know is Sigyn is a member of the Aesir and the wife of Loki.

Theoric is a construct of the Marvel Comics and was never in the Myth’s.

Differences between Mythology & Comics Loki:

In the comics Loki is the adopted son of Odin and Frigga and Adoptive brother to Thor & Balder. While in Mythology, Loki is implied to be the blood-brother to Odin and Step-Uncle to Thor and Balder.

In Myth, Hel is Loki’s daughter by Angrboda. In the comics, they retconned her as being called Hela and made her an adoptive sister of Loki’s and daughter of Odin instead. In fact, In the MCU, anything to do with Loki’s children is completely retconned and not mentioned.

Obviously Loki’s Biological parents were changed around in Marvel with Laufey being his father and Farbauti being his mother when it’s the other way around in the Myth’s.

In the myths, Loki tricked the dwarves Brokk and Eitri into making Mjolnir for the Aesir by making a bet which resulted in Loki getting his lips sewn shut. While in the comics, Mjolnir was forged in the heart of a dying star.

The Jotun are displayed as Frost Giants in Marvel, but in Mythology they are giants and a member of a race of nature spirits.

How Fans Become Stans

Our modern idea of a Fan and fandoms arises as a result of the rise of mass culture in the late 19th century (Coppa 2014, p.77). If fans emerged due to mass media, I would argue that the term ‘stan’ arises as a result of the digital revolution. The term Stan first appeared in 2001 in Eminem’s song of the same name. The song talks about an overly obsessive fan called Stan, who resorted to violence and harm to get recognition from their idol (Urban Dictionary). The term though is more commonly associated with Twitter, where hardcore fans of a celebrity or media object interact with each other and form a community (Whitehead, 2017). ‘Standoms’ even have names, Beyonce’s fans are the Behive, Mariah Carey’s fans are the Lambs and BTS stans are called the Army and Harry Potter fans are Potterheads. Although Stans are sometimes seen as obsessive and frankly as bullies, the verb ‘to stan’ is less stigmatized and part of the internet’s daily lexicon (The Take, 2021).

A recent study showed how GenX and GenZ interacted with fandoms. The research showed GenX limited their discussions about the fandom to their close circle of friends. Their activities within a fandom were mostly limited to traditional media. Comparatively Gen z expressions within the fandom are usually found in social media and they tend to be more creative, making fan arts and fanfictions (Clamor, 2020). This is not to say some people from GenX and the generations before them were not active in fandoms. One of the earliest fandoms revolved around the Sherlock Holmes series. In the late 19th century fans would line up to buy the next book in the Hound of the Baskerville series, much like Marvel fans today line up to see the next Avengers movie. (Coppa, 2014, p. 80) The Sherlock Holmes Society was formed back in 1934 where fans would discuss the content of the books and create analysis and related stories. However, the more dedicated fans that actively took part in fandom were seen as ‘antisocial’ and simple-minded (Jenkins, 1992, p.277).

The digital revolution managed to change outsiders' opinions of the fan community. New Technologies enabled ‘average consumers to archive, annotate, appropriate, and recirculate media content’ and media companies had no choice but to take notice (Jenkins, 2006 p.1). Even in the early days of the internet, there were fan forums and sites dedicated to particular celebrities and media. However, these sites existed in a vacuum isolated from outsiders (Whitehead, 2017). Social Media would skyrocket fandoms from subcultures into the mainstream.

With the rise of social media, Fandoms have become more accessible than ever. Making it so much easier for large groups of people to obsess over the same thing While GenX would have to actively search for online forums or even fan clubs to participate within a fan community. Now social media exposes us to different fandoms on a daily . You’ll be guaranteed to find a stan with the username along the lines of ‘Arilover24’, under the comment section of any popular social media post. Algorithms also recommended fan compilations of celebrities and TV or movie characters on streaming sites. I literally began watching ‘Friends’ after watching a twenty-minute video on the relationship between Chandler and Monica.

Another big thing that contributes to our larger participation with fandoms is our overall obsession with Social Media. Studies show that last year we spent at least 100 days of the year fully online (Currey, Kemp, & Mazloumian, 2020). Whereas before super fans could only meet with their fan club once a week, we can get notifications on our phone every minute. Now it's actually harder to marginalize ourselves from these communities. After the premiere of Marvel’s Avengers Endgame people went the extra mile to avoid spoilers, blocking keywords, downloading a Spoiler-Free Chrome extension, and not using their technology altogether, (Barrett, 2019)

Becoming a stan is also easier than ever, long gone are days of Harry Potter fans lining up for hours under the rain to get the next book. Now I can put my favourite artist's new single on replay while I do my homework. When Ariana Grande broke the Spotify record for most streams in the day, we definitely did our part as Stans, but compared to people lining up to get movie tickets for hours, it was a fairly easy and approachable task (Mulcahy, 2018).

We as a generation are not inherently more participatory, critical or creative in fandoms than the generations past, this sort of fans activity. The general public was just too busy asking these ‘fans to get a life’ instead of exploring the complexity and value in these communities (Jenkins, 1992, p.277). Stans do face backlash (and some of it, is pretty justified in my eyes), but a lot of activities that were seen as ‘obsessive’ and ‘too much’ thirty years ago, maybe even twenty are extremely normalized. No one thinks I am a social pariah because I share memes about glee on my Twitter page or watch Marvel fan theories when a new movie is about to premiere. Maybe my collaborations on this Tumblr page are a bit of a stretch according to social norms, but it can be considered more of a quirky hobby. We as a generation have been so lucky to grow up with access to a platform that further engages with these discussions and makes us come together as a group (Hillman, 2014).

Volume four of the Gamer’s Handbook of the Marvel Universe — Serpent Society thru Zzzax (1988) is the last of the main group of books. They were followed by four annual updates ('89, ‘90, ‘91 and ‘92), which noted the major story lines, costume changes, deaths and first appearances. All told, these books amount to a clear accounting of five or six years of Marvel comic history. They’re a fascinating time capsule, given their publication on the threshold, then across that threshold, of big changes in the comic industry. But I mostly just like them because they remind me of being a kid.

X-men on the cover, which seems like a given. Wolverine was starting his trend of appearing in everything right around then. Also, punk rock Storm forever.
