In mid-nineteenth century France, landscapes were increasingly common subjects and became extremely popular with collectors. A group of artists who faithfully depicted the French countryside are now identified as the Barbizon School. So named because they gathered in the small village called Barbizon on the edge of the Fontainebleau forest, not far from Paris.

I John Lavery's portrait is of the American artist Gaines Ruger Donoho. The work was painted in the summer of 1883 at Grez-sur-Loing, the village on the fringes of the Forest of Fontainebleau - the haunt of art students since its 'discovery' by pupils of Carolus Duran in 1875.
