He hates it.

He hates all the pageantry, all the falsity if it all and all those ladies being thrown at him since he grew into a man.

Ladies are presented by their female kin who are at court to mother and put on display for the social season. All their success depends on this presentation and who mother names the diamond of the court.

Why he must be there when this was a woman’s thing, is very obvious.

Aemond is unwed and unattached. Every attempt to capture him in the Septon's Noose has ended in failure and will until he decides to settle down.

Which is never.

He has no patience for romance nor children. As a second son with only a meager household in the city he doesn’t have the means to marry anything less than an heiress and those ladies do not want a man missing an eye.

He is content with his solitude. If only his mother could understand that.

“Can you believe her? She is delaying the girl’s presentation to be the last one in. As if that would make her dull daughter any special.” his mother grumbled under her breath now that they were in the halfway mark of list. Rhaenyra was to present her daughter, the girl who stole her twin brother’s birthright for being born about an hour before him, and refused to go first.

‘My daughter is just another young woman, treat her as you would treat a perfectly ordinary girl.’ Rhaenyra had said with a tight smile as she quoted the blasted scandal sheet circulating about when she arrived and handed the heralds the card as all the other mamas did.

She was really milking that cow by the looks of it. No one had seen Aemma Velaryon outside of the Crownlands since she flowered years ago. Last time he had seen her, she had been a ten-year-old girl and considered pretty. Aemond was curious to see what she grew into.

The herald cleared his voice for the fourteenth time this fucking morning as the doors to the queen’s sitting room opened at his gesture. “Princess Aemma Velaryon, presented by her mother, the Princess of Dragonstone.

His half-sister and her daughter dress in the white and ivory demanded by mother’s rules and act as if they were mere nobles instead of the heirs to the Iron Throne. Aemma had eschewed the monstrosity that was the new fashion of ostrich feathers introduced in recent years and, unlike the previous girl, did not faint.

She was a beauty with deep purple eyes, Rhaenyra’s smile and silver-gold ringlets braided back like a valyrian goddess. Why the Morning Scandal would call the so-called Pearl of Dragonstone ordinary is beyond him.

A shame she is not on the list, Helaena whispers to him as mother’s calm smile turns tight at the scene before her.

They perform the walk as if they invented it, the girl curtsied deeply ---something Aemond was not expecting given the animosity between their families--- and Aemond wondered if mother would drag this out a little longer as she does with those of Rhaenyra’s faction.

Court is never hospitable to a Black, Blacks are never on the list of eligible women he gets every year since he turned five and ten. Aemma, despite being third in line for the Iron Throne and every ambitious man’s dream, will be eaten alive even if her charm matched her good looks.

The Diamond is always Green. As Green as an emerald, the Morning Scandal had called it when setting court afire for pointing out the queen’s obvious favoritism.

Cassandra Baratheon was to be such jewel given she was at the top of this year’s list of potential brides, but this year his mother must name a Black the Diamond of the Season and Aemond knows who she will name.

While the Court gasps as the queen rose from her throne and looked at her victim with a mask of serene joy, Aemond stares at the poor girl his mother will ruin with her next actions.

Queen Alicent bids the princess to rise with her delicate hand under her chin and kissed the forehead of her rival’s daughter, “The Gods have blessed you with a Diamond, stepdaughter.”

For the first time in twenty years, the Diamond is not affiliated with the Queen’s party.

As much as Aemma liked being made to feel special, this was most unexpected.

The queen has always hated her, ever since she was a girl the queen always took great pleasure in finding ways to be cruel to her. As if it were her fault that the king neglected her children with her and saw in her all the potential Aegon lacked.

“Thank you, your grace.” Mother took the compliment with something akin to modesty and soon enough they were leaving the drawing room the same way they came in.

Aemma was supposed to be ignored, to be made to feel as ordinary as the gossipmonger had written. Aemma was not supposed to be the fucking diamond of the season.

If she were to be seen as not magical nor any better than the rest of the girls debuting in society, the worst of her suitors would not dare approach her. If she were the diamond, she would be the star of the show and have her pick of the men.

The Diamond is always well-dowered, well-bred and ended the season well-married. Usually, the man is someone of the queen’s choosing and thrown together often enough to make it look like it came about organically and not because the Greens gain something from the match.

Aemma wants to marry a man of her choice --- of the available men in mother’s list, she’s not a fool---, she will be damned if she lets the Green Snake of the Hightower take that from her.

Anyway, tears aside, I REALLY enjoyed Ghostwire: Tokyo. It’s really well written, the premise and the aesthetic are excellent, and it’s just overall very fun to play. I liked it a lot

I did play it in Japanese, because I like to play with default settings on my first playthrough of any game (how the devs intended for it to be experienced), and Japanese audio is the default, but I would like to play it again in English because there are several Ghost of Tsushima cast members in the English cast (Feodor Chin, Greg Chun, and Daisuke Tsuji, though the latter two just play extras)

I’m gonna try for plat first and then we’ll see what I decide to do lol

Also there is a fat ginger cat named Sweet Potato. I kind of love what a mess Eli is. Nick is also a bit of a mess but masking it better. I loved them both.

I love this book so much! I did not want it to be over and I lingered over it as much as is possible with an audiobook, having a fantastic time. THE BONE SHARD WAR is the conclusion of the Drowning  Empire Trilogy, a story of memory, identity, and connection in the context of a war filled with greed, shifting loyalties, and magic arising from unexpected sources. 

As a sequel, and the final book in the trilogy, THE BONE SHARD WAR wraps up pretty much everything I could think of in ways that range from surprising to satisfying, but all of them wonderful to read. Jovis has an entirely new phase in his life, this time he is coerced and magically enslaved by an enemy rather than his previous state of voluntarily working with Lin. Lin, two years after being told that Jovis was dead, is trying to do what is necessary to hold the empire together, slowly beginning to understand that holding the empire together at any cost might not be what's best for the people within it. None of the storylines are wholly new, but they are in new phases which are distinct from the first two books. Finally the characters start to understand the connections between the various sources of magic, and solve mysteries related to the white bladed swords.
