Ranking Cosmere Dads for Father’s Day

It’s Father’s Day! In honor (?) of this holiday, I’ve put Cosmere dads into a tier list. So who are the best & worst dads in the Cosmere?

[Spoilers for all Cosmere works, including Tress of the Emerald Sea!]

S-Tier: Best Dads in the Cosmere

Lem, Rock

Here we find dads who support and love their kids, no matter what. Lem, Tress’s dad in Emerald Sea, actively helps his daughter sneak off the island to rescue the man she loves, calling in all of the favors he’s built up by being an all around great dude. Rock, from Stormlight Archive, loves his family. Even though he believes very strongly in the jobs-by-birth-order tradition, when his daughter Cord decides to abandon pacifism and join the fight, he supports her. We love dads who help realize their daughters’ dreams, even when those dreams may differ from the dad’s own worldview!

A-Tier: Really Great Dads

Wax, Eventeo

Eventeo, Sarene’s dad in Elantris, and Wax of Wax and Wayne fame, are both excellent dads. Eventeo supports his daughter Sarene as best he can, although he doesn’t always realize how Sarene is really feeling. When Sarene arrives in Arelon to find her fiance “dead,” she’s determined to stay in order to maintain the treaty that her marriage has created--but Eventeo wants her to know that if she wants to come back home, there will always be a place for her. Wax seems to be a great dad to Tindwyl and (sigh) Maxillium, and he flies his kids around! That’s pretty fun.

B-Tier: Pretty Good Dads...Most of the Time

Kelsier, Elhokar, Stormfather

I’m counting Kelsier as Vin’s dad, for the record! Elhokar from Stormlight Archive has a baby son, and the Stormfather is the father of the Honorspren like Syl. These dads definitely try to do right by their kids. Kelsier is a good dad to Vin, overall. He may not support her love for Elend at first, but when push comes to shove, he does risk his life to save Elend just because Vin loves him. And he loves and supports Vin the whole way through. Elhokar doesn’t really have much to do with his little son, but he does try in the end to rescue him and dies in the process, so that has to count for something, right? The Stormfather has, uh, trouble supporting his kids because he’s so paranoid that the oaths will kill them, but when push comes to shove, he really has no choice to accept their oaths. That’s support! Albeit forced by his nature as a spren, etc. All of these dads do intend the best for their kids, but they’re maybe a tad problematic about how they go about it.

C-Tier: They, uh, Mean Well I guess?

Dalinar, Lirin, Taravangian

Dalinar is tricky because he may be a pretty solid dad now, but hoo boy was he not such a great dad in the beginning. He barely remembered that Renarin existed, and he spent most of his time wantonly slaughtering people. So on average, I put Dalinar at C. I may get in trouble for putting Lirin so low but LISTEN. He called Kaladin a MONSTER. He REFUSES to accept his son as he is! But, like, I know he loves Kaladin and means well, etc. Taravangian may be a villain, but as a father, he does make darn sure his kids & grandkids are outside of his schemes so that they won’t be implicated and he trades the whole world for their safety. Which would be sweeter if not for the “everyone else can die for all I care” angle.

D-Tier: They Basically Suck As Dads

Charlie’s dad, Iadon, Dedelin, Tevidian, Gavilar

Now we get to dads who are lowkey abusive. Charlie’s dad from Tress of the Emerald Sea tried to force his son into an unwanted marriage, and when that didn’t work and Charlie ended up kidnapped, he just sort of shrugged and replaced Charlie with someone else. Wow. Iadon, Raoden’s father from Elantris, was paranoid and grumpy and his son was actively working to undermine him. Iadon in turn barely batted an eye when he had to throw his son into Elantris. Dedelin, Siri’s and Vivenna’s dad from Warbreaker, so favored his daughter Vivenna that he sent his unprepared and innocent daughter Siri to what he thought was her death. And finally, Tevidian (Vin’s biological father from Mistborn) was Lord Prelan. He goes into D-tier almost by default. We don’t know much yet about Gavilar’s relationship to his children, but he did try to make Jasnah marry AMARAM, and he seemed to feel scorn for Elhokar. That’s not great material for a father’s day card.

F-Tier: Actively Harmful To Their Children

Edwarn, Lin Davar, Straff

And finally, the dads who are ACTIVELY and SUPREMELY abusive! Edwarn is Wax’s uncle apparently (I thought he was Wax’s dad whoops), but I think he fulfilled the dad role. Anyway, he tried to have Wax KILLED. Lin Davar was an abusive nightmare to all of his kids (and I’m including Shallan) until Shallan had to kill him to save his brother.

And Straff. Straff (Elend’s dad from Mistborn) is the worst dad in the Cosmere. Bad to his son Elend. Bad to everyone his son loves. Bad overall. I can’t even. I’m so glad he got cut in half with a giant sword.

Because I’m tired over parenting debates where the only true answer is Straff, who’s the worst sibling?

Motivations under the cut:

Reen - Was physically and psychologically abusive towards his sister.

Zane - Tried to have his brother assasinated and tried to make his sister in law fall in love with him because he was jealous and when she didn't reciprocrate tried to kill her as well. Also got multiple of his other siblings killed during the previously mentioned assassination attempt.

Gavilar - Used his brother as a weapon and then used his following ptsd and addiction as a way to manipulate him. He also persued the girl he knew his brother wanted to court.

Dalinar - Was about to kill his brother once, got drunk and didn’t listen during his meetings and eventually fucked his widow (which is good for her but I imagine Gavilar would take issue).

Telsin - Faked her death, killed her brother, then tried to nuke his home city.

Eventeo - Took the throne from his brother and banished him.

Kiin - Tried to take the throne back from his brother by force.

Balat - Let his sister deal with their family problems and feel responsible for him and their brothers despite being the youngest.

Helaran - Left his siblings alone with their abusive father.

Kelsier - Died? And fought over a girl.

Venli - Set off events that led to her sisters death, kinda. Idk it's not her I just wanted more women on the list.

Prime Elhokar - Had one of his sisters closest allies murdered in front of her. Basically locked her up so she couldn't tell anyone and then married her off to Sadeas/Amaram against her wishes.

Finished Elantris! Don't have any pithy comments but I did want to share this: my list of cosmere siblings ranked from best to worst. Incomplete as I haven't read Mistborn Era 2, Warbreaker, or Tress yet, I'll update it when I do.

1. Adolin and Renarin - obviously

2. Kaladin and Tien - also obviously

3. Kiin's children - so originally they were gonna be 4 but then the twist about Adien happened and I realized: 5 years and the two 10 year olds NEVER said shit about their brother being Elantrian. Do you know how big of a fucking narc 10 year Olds are? Those kids must have really loved their brother. A++ 10/10 family

4. Beldre and The Citizen - generally look out for each other as long as one of them isn't possessed by Ruin. Upon reflection even IF one is possessed by Ruin

5. The Davar siblings - they love each other its just...boy their family is dysfunctional

6. Jasnah and Elhokar - more distant but hey, they still like each other

7. Elend and Zane - literally never met and by their own admission do not hate each other so

8. Kelsier and Marsh - put here but I'm literally expecting them to try to kill each other at some point

9. Kiin and Eventeo - so uh...dont know exactly what the fuck's going on there but it ain't GOOD

10. Venli and Eshonai - care for each other but probably would be best if they stayed far apart

(10.5 Raoden and Eton - my man got cut from the final book so he doesn't count but if he did they'd go here)

11. Gavilar and Dalinar - fucked up!

Elantris Characters and their Dumb, Stupid Secrets That are Dumb

Joe_Anglican: I'm new to Mr. Sanderson's work and my first book, Warbreaker, was enjoyable.

Maybe it's depression or the global pan-pizza but I just finished Elantris and I found it just absolutely got under my skin in all the wrong ways. Among many things that bothered me was the CONSTANT revealing of secret identities or keeping of secrets.

I really do want to be a fun-haver not a fun-ruiner, so to get out of my bad mood I wrote this up in the spirit of giving the author a gentle ribbing. I hope you like it, internet strangers.

<SPOILERS, DUH>

CHARACTERS IN ELANTRIS

Has a Secret Identity or Engages in Secret Keeping for Literally No Reason:

Prince Raoden - Aw shucks, I’m just a regular Joe Leper.

Galladon - Aw shucks, I’m just a regular Jose Farmer.

Princess Sarene - Now that I have bad skin I’m sure no one wants to hear how the King was a cultist and hung himself.

Hrathen - No secrets here! I just thought tattooing “Deus Ex Machina” on my demon arm would be funny.

Dilaf - Type III Demon can only be damaged by +1 or better weapons.

Brutal Gang leader Karata - actually an honorable nursemaid.

Brutal Gang leader Shaor - actually a petulant child.

Brutal Gang leader Aanden - actually a not-crazy sculptor.

Arteth Fjorn - I was the bumblingest of fools who disappeared in the first chapter but guess who I’m going to kill at the end of the book?! It’s like RA-ee-AAAIN on your wedding day!

Does Not Keep Nonsense Secrets:

Lord Birthmark - actually pretty sensible to keep your plans to usurp the throne and sell out your country to the bad guys on the down low.

That one guy who just loves scrubbing slime

Brandon Sanderson: Ha. That was pretty hilarious. Joe_Anglican, You'll probably find it amusing to know that I cut out a couple of big twists that ended up being useless except for them being twists. The first draft was even worse.

Chronology of events in Elantris

This is full of spoilers.

Day X (Possibly Day 1; it has to be less than five days before Day 1). Raoden is thrown into Elantris. Raoden meets and hires Galladon.

Day 1. Hrathen and Sarene arrive in Arelon. Sarene meets Iadon. Raoden recruits Mareshe (craftsman). Raoden, Galladon, and Mareshe get stuck on a rooftop in the rain. Hrathen dismisses Fjon and makes Dilaf his Odiv. Hrathen has three months to convert Arelon. (But how long is three months?) Hrathen starts attending court balls (this could have happened at a later date, possibly as late as Day 3. According to Shuden, Hrathen started attending balls as soon as he showed up.)

Day 2. Sarene sees Hrathen in Iadon's court. Sarene meets Kiin and his family.

Day 3. Sarene sees Elantris and interrupts Hrathen's sermon on the wall. Sarene sees Raoden, Galladon, and Mareshe from a distance (yes, they are still stuck on the rooftop). Hrathen meets with Arelene nobles.

Day 4. Raoden is met with Aanden's men and is prevented from recruiting anyone.

Day 5. Three people enter Elantris, and Raoden recruits them all: Maare (housewife), Riil (workman), and Saolin (soldier). Raoden sees Aanden and recognizes him as Taan (sculptor). Seon Ien comes to Raoden. Sarene is introduced to Raoden's old friends: Count Eondel, Baron Shuden, Duke Roial, Count Ahan, and Baron Edan.

Day ?. Hrathen and Dilaf give a sermon. Hrathen uses a Seon to contact Wyrn.

Day 11. Raoden recruits Loren.

Day (X + 1.5 weeks. Possibly Day 11). Raoden has been in Elantris for 'barely a week and a half.' (But how long is a week?) Raoden finds a text in Aons. Kahar (cleaner) joins Raoden. Karata and twelve Elantrians visit Raoden. Raoden leads Karata into Iadon's palace, then return to Elantris. Karata shows Elantrian children to Raoden and joins him. Sarene joins Eshen's embroidery club of about ten women, including Daora, Atara (wife of Telrii), Seaden (wife of Ahan), and Torena (daughter of Ahan). Sarene offers to teach them fencing. Sarene attends Telrii's ball with Shuden, and remarks that Hrathen is a full week ahead of her in attending balls. Sarene hears there has been a break-in at the palace. Hrathen has a secret meeting with Telrii on Elantris wall, and hears the gates close.

Day ? (Day X + 2 weeks). Some days after Kahar joined. More people have been joining Raoden. Raoden tells Galladon about Duladel Republic's collapse and the plan to grow corn. Raoden confronts Aanden (Taan). Aanden and some of his men join Raoden. Sarene starts teaching fencing to ladies in embroidery club. Sarene meets Omin, a Korathi priest, and learns about Widow's Trial. She learns from Eventeo that she must help Iadon. At night, she hears a strange noise in her room.

Hrathen and Dilaf examine Diren, an Elantrian. They burn the Elantrian peasant. Hrathen contacts Forton for an elixir, which will take two weeks to arrive.

Day ?. Raoden is attacked by Shaor's men. Raoden visits the hall of the Hoed.

Day ?. Sarene meets with Roial, Ahan, Edan, Shuden, and Eondel. A week has passed since their last meeting, or perhaps since Sarene's zoom call with Eventeo. "Telrii's accounts have swelled drastically during the last two weeks.' (Would this be 2 weeks since Day 3, or since Day 11?) Planting began last week; accounting day is coming in two months. Sarene makes a deal with Iadon that profits him and lets her enter Elantris. Her maid has run away that afternoon, the fourth girl this year to do so. Sarene hears noises in her wall again, and notices a pattern. She had heard it three times total. The noises are heard twice a week at eleven.

Hrathen finds out Dilaf has made Odiv of all of Hrathen's supporters. Hrathen talks to a beggar. Hrathen talks to Omin. Omin questions Hrathen's lack of faith.

Day ? (Approximately 3 weeks after Day X). Shaor has not been able to capture a newcomer in weeks. Raoden hypothesizes that surrendering one's humanity is another way to deal with pain. Raoden finds out that Shaor is Telrii's daughter. Sarene's Widow's Trial in Elantris begins. Sarene strikes a deal with the "despots" of Elantris.

Hrathen avoids Dilaf but cannot get rid of him.

Day ? (Approximately 4 weeks, or 1 month, after Day X). Sarene does Widow's Trial, with Torena. Telrii and few other nobles watch. Raoden had been helping this week. Raoden has been in Elantris for a month. New Elantris had potential only for a week. Most of Galladon's workers disappeared last week. Galladon's father was an Elantrian. An old Elantrian shows the way to the Pool.

Same day, Sarene learns that Spirit (Raoden) is in charge of Elantris. Sarene has "saved the monarchy." Sarene urges women to accompany her to Elantris next day, with no men. Edan has fled the country, to avoid accounting day. Hrathen receives a package containing four vials from Forton. He drinks one.

Next day (or possibly later; the narrative makes it sound like it's the next day, but Sarene had told the women that there would be no nobleman the next day at the Trial, and Eondel was actually there, making this look like not the very next day. However, the Shaod potion seems to work quickly, Which would support tge Next Day interpretation here.) Raoden has started reading books from the secret room and understanding AonDor. Shaor's men attack the food cart. Eondel defends the nobles. Saolin falls. Sarene bullies Iadon into calling off an attack on Elantris. Lukel jokes that Iadon will abdicate in favor of Sarene. Shaod took Hrathen last night. Hrathen enters Elantris and begins praying. Elantrian Hrathen's Day 1.

Elantrian Hrathen's Day 3. After waiting for two days, Raoden lets Saolin dissolve into the pool. People have been returning to new Elantris. Raoden ambushes Shaor with seed corn. Few of Shaor's man come to Raoden to cook.

Same Day. Sarene has spent last three days in reflection. Now she attends a party Roial and she planned weeks ago, before the events at Elantris. This is the night of the lunar eclipse. Sarene's servant has run off again. Sarene follows Iadon into the sewers, where his cult meets. Eondel and Roial rescue Sarene. Dilaf also witnesses the scene.

Same Night. Hrathen thinks of the moon as the goddess of the heavens, but does not worship it as Jeskers do. He's been praying three days.

Elantrian Hrathen's Day 4. Morning after Raoden's attempt at restoring Shaor men's sense, they show up with Shaor's wig and convert to him. Iadon hangs himself, with Eondel's suggestion.

Elantrian Hrathen's Day 5. After trying for two days, Raoden knows it's impossible to restore the minds of Shaor's men. It has been FIVE DAYS since he entered Elantris. Raoden has discovered the reason for the slime. Hrathen has been healed.

Same Day. "FIVE WEEKS and you've already dethroned the king," Eventeo says to Sarene. Iadon hanged himself last night. Seinalan left Teod for Arelon as soon as he found out. Sarene & Co have been thinking two days about how to deal with Telrii. Shuden suggests Sarene marry Roial. Engagement is on and last four days, wedding planned for the day of Iadon's funeral. Hrathen exits Elantris, in the afternoon of the fifth day of his exile.

Day ?. "I'm alright, Raoden croaked, ashamed. They would realize how weak he was, that he couldn't stand the pain of even a month long stay in Elantris." (Earlier, hr said that he's been in Elantris 5 weeks, so that means a month is longer than 5 weeks right? Unless Raoden meant he was in his fifth week, not spent 5 full weeks?) Raoden is overwhelmed by pain, has a vision of immense pressure, and glows.

Day of the funeral. (Four days after Hrathen's healing.) Hrathen has been and is giving sermons outside. Senalan arrives in Arelon. "Barely more than a month had passed" since Sarene set up an easel in Iadon's throne room. Iadon os buried. Sarene's wedding is interrupted by Shaod coming upon her. Elantrian Sarene's Day 1.

Next day. Elantrian Sarene's Day 2. Raoden suggests to Galladon to find a way up to Elantris wall. Sarene is thrown into Elantris. Sarene had delivered large batches of food a"few weeks back." (Widow's Trial ended just 9 or 10 days back.) Spirit (Raoden) shows new Elantris to Sarene. Ashe comes to Sarene at night.

Next Day? Hrathen is well on the way to converting Arelon, with nearly six weeks left before the deadline.

Next Day? Elantrian Sarene's Day 4. Raoden and Galladon go up to the wall of Elantris, and this is the third day Galladon has asked Raoden to come. They talked about finding a stairwell two days ago. They are city guards around Telrii's house. Sarene tells Raoden all the news from Kae. Seon confirms Telriii is king.

Same day? While Telrii celebrates at his coronation party, Hrathen watches Elantris for Sarene. Eventeo contacts Hrathen via seon Dio, and agrees to heal Sarene in exchange for Eventeo converting.

Probably Next day. Elantrian Sarene's Day 5. Hrathen is praying aloud for healing on Elantris wall. Sarene says Aon Aon is the shape of the land. Sarene is healed. Hrathen gets Sarene out of Elantris. It took five days until Sarene was healed. Sarene suggests to her barons to openly oppose telrii. Roial and Sarene break betrothal. Sarene met Kiin two months ago.(Sarene, just five days back, you said you set up an easel barely more than a month ago. Now you say you meet Kiin two months ago. Those two events happened on the same day. How do you count days?) Sarene learns of her father's conversion. Telrii tells Hrathen he wants to be gyorn; he sent messenger to Wyrn days ago.

Day ?. Five days have passed since Sarene's departure. Sarene has convinced her Lords to rebel against Telrii. Sarene has been sending supply dumps. Raoden figures out that Aons are missing the chasm, and draws an aon correctly, with explosive result. Aons work only weakly, and does not heal Elantrians. Raoden can disguise himself.

Day ?. Sarene is leading the fencing club. They have met every second day for a month now. (They began meeting two weeks after Day X.) Raoden shows up to fencing club, disguised as Kaloo. They spar.

Hrathen notes disappointed merchants in the empty market. Dilaf is there, and he says he has victory.

Day ?. Likely not the same day, because kaloo had time to write a letter to Sarene and she returned it unopened. So a few days later. Galladon sews the wound on Raoden's face. Roial invites Kaloo to join Kiin's meeting tonight. Eondel suggests killing Telrii, and most of them agree. Sarene recognizes kaloo as Spirit. Ahan betrays Roial. Telrii has Roial killed, and orders the rest killed too. Kaloo reveals himself as Raoden.

Same night. Eondel attacks the palace and kills Telrii, and dies.

Next Day. Day after Roial's death. Raoden has sent Galladon to Elantris this morning to teach aon dor. From Kiin's house, Raoden and Sarene see Eondel and Telrii's corpses at the palace. He attacked the city last night. Last couple of days have been hard for Shuden (future father in law a traitor, mentor dead). Elantris city guard come looking for Raoden to make him king. Coronation is held within the hour. Dilaf undoes Raoden's illusion, but Sarene crowns him anyway. Raoden send Ashe to Galladon to warn him to be ready for anything. Hrathen follows Dilaf to the market and finds that the Fjordell merchants were DakHor monks in disguise, sent by Wyrn. It is evening. The invasion of Arelon is happening a month early.

This is the night all the things happen. Raoden is captured by Dilaf. Sarene orders Hoid to deliver a shipment to Elantris, and sends Ashe ahead to Elantris. Sarene is attacked by Dakhor monks and finds refuge in Kiin's house.

Next Day. As day dawns, Raoden uses a stick to complete Aon Rao. Elantris and Elantrians are fixed. Dilaf takes Sarene and Hrathen across the sea, etc., all the stuff happens.

Some days later? Sarene marries Raoden.

A week has passed since the wedding. They hold Hrathen's funeral.
