Anime Overview: The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady

Whew, not typing that again! We’re calling it Magirevo. If you couldn’t tell from the trademark long title, it’s a light novel adaptation, but most importantly, it’s a yuri light novel adaptation.

(And yes, technically an isekai, but the isekai element isn’t focused on a lot. It only comes into play at the last minute, in a surprisingly emotional way!)

The story centers around two extraordinary girls- Anisphia, nicknamed Anis, and Euphyllia, nicknamed Euphie. Anis is a rambunctious princess who’s given up her claim to the throne. Royals are expected to be able to wield magic, and Anis was born without the ability. So she’s developing her own field of study, “magicology”, and inventing tools that will allow anyone access to the wonders of magic. Since magic was restricted to nobles before this, Anis making it easily accessible to the common people naturally threatens the gentry, and Anis is branded a heretic. On top of all that, Anis has openly declared if she ever did get married, it would have to be to a woman, and she’s not interested in continuing the royal “bloodline”.

Euphie, in contrast, is entirely focused on fulfilling her role as a proper noblewoman. She’s arranged to be married to the future King, Anis’ brother, Algard, and is determined to live up to expectations. But then Algard betrays her and publicly destroys her social standing.

That’s when Anis steps in to save the day. She takes Euphie’s hand, quite literally carries her brother’s girlfriend away, and promises Euphie they’ll discover the root of the conspiracy brewing against her. So their partnership- and blooming romance- begins.

Sometimes just I want to watch girls fight dragons and save kingdoms and use cool magic. And sometimes I want to watch girls be gloriously joyously gay. I want to watch them fall in love, kiss, dance grandly, and team up to defeat enemies with swords and sparkles! I want to see layered, powerful queer protagonists in fun fantasy adventures! Magirevo delivers wonderfully on all those fronts, and (easy mark that I am) that alone would probably have been enough for me, but that’s far from all the series has to offer.

Anis and Euphie are great protagonists. Anis is chaotic and passionate with her love of magic. She’s bold, openly queer, and charming right off the bat. Meanwhile, Euphie is a girl struggling with the fact she spent her whole life trying to fit into the mold of perfect lady, perfect prodigy and perfect future queen. Every choice was made for her, but now that life has been ripped away. She’s free to make her own choices now, but all that possibility is frightening and overwhelming, and seeing how other people live makes her feel empty aside. The care that the show puts into representing Euphie’s depression is one of the best parts of the early arcs. The sharp direction really lets the viewer feel Euphie’s sense of loss and melancholy, as well as the hope she comes across when she realizes there’s a power in making her own choices, and when she finds inspiration in Anis.

Both girls are dynamic, easy to root for, and have a strong rapport with each other. They also both go through some nice development. The story starts off with Euphie as the vulnerable one who’s burdened with expectation and Anis as her confident savior, only to completely reverse the roles near the end of the story. We get to enjoy the journey of watching Euphie grow bolder and more self possessed, meanwhile as the story goes on it becomes clear that Anis’s sunny nature hides some aching insecurities and royal traumas. She’s not unscathed by how others denigrate her for not having magic, or from the pressure of her role. The character arcs are simple to follow, but the development is satisfying.

Yuri adaptations are often cursed with scant resources and middling-to-poor looking animation (sobs in Otherside Picnic) but Magirevo is thankfully a glowing exception to that. The animation is slick, and the show delivers some punchy action scenes and great emotional moments. When Anis and Euphie wield dangerous magic to fight an attacking dragon, it’s just as fun and hype as your average action shonen, and it’s great to see lesbians get to go feral and do ridiculous OP fantasy shit.

Magirevo also has some really fun side characters, like the cynical goth gremlin Tilty and Anis’ charmingly snarky maid Illia. There’s a few fun surprises in store- like a compelling hints of another wlw side romance, involving a vampire! It would be nice to see these characters get a little more attention, but the anime can only cover so much.

The second episode has a few hiccups that might stick out to some viewers- Anis’ father reacts badly to her antics and her declarations that she loves women, and his reaction is played in a goofy anime slapstick violence way that’s very tonally weird (it's even weirder in prose, believe me). There’s also jokes made about Euphie feeling initially uncomfortable about Anis’ flirtation and this includes Anis “helping her get her clothes off because they’re too complicated to do on her own” and Euphie being obviously unhappy with this. In the light novel, since we see Anis’ POV and there's not much of a negative reaction from Euphie, so we know she genuinely did just want to help Euphie with her clothes and wasn’t being a perv, but it doesn’t quite come off that way in the anime. Though at least the whole thing is much briefer and less skeevy than it's manga counterpart. (And Anis never repeats this behavior again).

There’s also some brief scenes of Anis at the bath later on, and an even briefer scene where Anis touches a girls boob as part of an examination and said girl is super embarrassed (this one goes by quickly enough and Anis’ expression is detached and clinical enough it doesn’t make much of an impression- it was so much worse in the manga). In the area of things that are unsettling on purpose, there’s a pretty well-done scene where Anis has to listen to a bunch of old nobles talk about her like she’s breeding stock, and a lot of emphasis is put on her disgust, fear, and discomfort. It delivers the message well, but might be upsetting.

The other caveat of the show is that while making magic accessible to commoners and upsetting the outdated hierarchy is a clear theme of the show, it’s far more focused on Anis’ and Euphie’s relationship. I think that’s for the best, though it might make one feel like the show glosses over some things. You shouldn’t expect super complex political intrigue or a rigorous, detailed examination of oppression- the show’s more into romance and cool fights. (The ending of the anime also makes it clear the fight to reform the kingdom is ongoing, so we might get more in the novels, for what its worth).

The anime also manages to condense three light novels into 12 episodes. This leaves the last arc feeling a little cramped with all the big emotions and ideas its covering, but after reading the light novel I discovered that the anime didn’t cut out much of value. The anime is by far the best way to experience the story, as the light novels are incredibly repetitive and full of exposition dumps. The anime wisely cuts all that out and focuses on what matters, the emotions and the characters. I do wish there was one more episode at least, since judging by the care the anime team shows I think they would have capable of adding good original content, but overall I’m very impressed with all the adaptation decisions. The anime turns an uneven, dragging novel series into a tighter, jam-packed story with a satisfying finale.

And what a finale it is!

When I say joyously gay, I really mean it- the Magirevo finale is one of giddiest celebrations of queer romance I’ve seen in anime. You will happily drown in rainbows.

It’s so rare to see a yuri adaptation get far enough with the source material that we get romantic catharsis, and Magirevo goes for every inch of it! Even the early moments of Euphie’s shyness and Anis’ pushy flirting become more meaningful as the roles are reversed in a truly fun way.

We even see the isekai concept used for meaningful emotional drama I always wish more stories would go into! It’s stellar all around.

Magirevo is a fairly simple story at its core, treading on some well-worn fantasy archetypes and tropes. But the loveable characters and jubilant execution of the romance make it a treat to watch. Who cares if it’s not super deep? Queer viewers deserve something shiny and fun once in a while, and Magirevo truly has a magic of its' own.

What is this another Weeb Wednesday and I am going to bring up an isekai, how can this be? You might remember that I said the last isekai was the second gayest anime of the season only losing to golf, but this came out after. So we have the gays and you know what is next? Magical girls! I still have not run out of them, yet. But what anime can out gay gay golf? One that speed runs the “is it yuri or is it bait” question in two episodes. Be warned though it is a mouthful: The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady or TMRotRPatG for short, or MagiRevo for even shorter that you can actually say. Really there are plenty of ways that I can explain how gay gay very gay gay gay homosexual gay it is with just four images and text (from /r/Animemes).

In the first episode the main character Anisphia "Anis" Wynn Palettia crashes a party her brother is having, she steals her brother’s soon to be ex-fiancé Euphyllia "Euphy'' Magenta, decides it is in everyone’s best interest to keep her, and the two end up in bed. I mean there is other things about the fact that Anisphia is a princess who cannot use magic so is creating her own system of magic, that Euphyllia is a genius (and turns out to be a bigger switch that at first glance), also there is maids and a lesbian vampire. This anime is gay, and I think that the anime actually did the light novel justice and might have made it moar gay. Also a deep story about what is needed to be a ruler of a country and if someone is willing to give up what they want for others. Also again a lesbian vampire, who yes is not a big stompy dommy mommy but still should be called out.

PS. Yes I am doing my part to keep Weeb Wednesday gay. For the children.

Hare's isekai Quest - The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady

I recently reblogged a list of female led isekai manga and decided to make a list and dive into a bunch of them and report my findings! This is the second one I've read now. I caught up to the most recently translated chapter pretty quickly!

A quick summary- Princess Anisphia awoke to the memories of her previous life in a normal world many years ago and was inspired to throw herself into researching magic and specifically magical technology that can be used by anyone whether they have innate magical ability or not. Meanwhile on the other side of the palace her brother the crown prince is currently breaking off his engagement and denouncing his former fiance, Euphyilia, for allegedly tormenting the otome heroine Lainie whom he and a circle of other handsome influential young men have fallen in love with. It's not made clear whether Euphyillia actually did anything at the moment, but the prince's public condemnation in the middle of a party is very bad news for her. Luckily for her, Anisphia crashes through a window while testing her new flying broom and sees the situation and abruptly decides to kidnap Euphyllia. She takes Euphy to the king, tattles on her brother who made this whole scene and broke off an important political engagement without his father's approval, and convinces the king and Euphy's father to let Euphy live at her villa and become her research assistant to help rehabilitate her reputation. This all happens very rapidly (like two chapters) and then the story proceeds to the part it's more interested in, Euphy opening up to her savior Anisphia and the two of them quickly falling for each other. Then Anis fights a dragon and gets cursed and it turns out Lainie's a vampire!

I got the feeling that I was missing something from this one because I'm not that familiar with the specific subgenre of isekai that is villainess isekai. I wasn't totally at sea since I am a big fan of otome games, which is where the tropes originate, but I definitely felt like there were references I wasn't getting.

I'm of the feeling that it maybe shouldn't really count as an isekai, since that element of it is so perfunctory and inessential to the story being told. The fact that the princess has memories of a previous life in a normal world is covered in a one page flashback and very rarely brought up again and doesn't seem to influence her at all except in how much she loves magic.

In my opinion there's three main pillars to the isekai genre- The first being an element of portal fantasy, being transported to a new world in some way, either physically or through reincarnation, the second is the litrpg element, game mechanics as part of the world building. The third is the element of indulgent fantasy- the main character in some way is living out a fantasy for the author/readers, whether that is being extremely powerful, or being acknowledged as unique and important, or just attracting the attention of a lot of big titty elves. Without all three of these elements, I don't think something truly qualifies as isekai.

In the case of Magirevo, the portal fantasy element is vestigial, the video game mechanics are only there if you squint (Lainie's inexplicable charm is basically the mechanic of being the main character of an otome game, and it's explained as an actual magical effect later) but the indulgent fantasy element is undeniable. You can really feel the author's fix it fic longing to rescue and rehabilitate the villainess from their favorite game. In fact there's not much else going on at first at all. The early plot feels extremely perfunctory and is rushed through as quickly as possible until the point where Anis and Euphy are finally alone together to talk about their feelings. After that there's sort of a sense of it not being sure where to go from there.

That said, it is a good time. The action is fun and fast paced, the characters are compelling, and the art has some fun stylized flourishes. I particularly like that the female characters are allowed to make intense, unattractive expressions you usually only see on male characters.

The relationship between Euphy and Anis didn't do much for me, but I could see it being engaging for someone else, particularly someone with more experience in villainess manga.

That's the good and the bad, time for the ugly. It's time for... "How much did the author's fetish get in the way?" Good news this time, honestly! There's some standard cheesecake, an unnecessary undressing scene and one instance of some dubiously consensual groping. But overall, much less fan service than there could be and no niche fetishes cropping up to make things weird. That was a pleasant surprise!

Overall, I enjoyed this one. Even if the plot is a little handwaved, the execution is still compelling enough to keep me invested. I don't know if I'll try to keep up with it, but I don't regret reading it. I'll give it 6 out of 10 magic portals.

The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady, known as Tensei Oujo to Tensai Reijou no Mahou Kakumei or MagiRevo for short, is a yuri isekai directed by Shingo Tamaki. It is based on a Japanese light novel series by Piero Karasu and illustrated by Yuri Kisaragi, which was later adapted into an ongoing manga. The series was produced by Japanese anime studio, Diomedéa.

This animated series primarily centers on a Princess named Anisphia "Anis" Wynn Palettia (voiced by Sayaka Senbongi). She remembers her previous life, love of magic, and tries to turn these fantasies into reality. By accident, she comes upon her brother, Algard, who is breaking off his romantic engagement with Euphyllia "Euphie" (voiced by Manaka Iwami). He publicly declares his love for another woman. After she whisks Euphie on her magic broom, she convinces her father to let Euphie come live with her, become her magic assistant, and help restore her royal credibility.

Unlike yuri isekai, such as The Executioner and Her Way of Life or I’m in Love with the Villainess, this series focuses on a reincarnated princess living her second life. In fact, Anis, applies what she remembers about witches from her previous life in Japan, to this new world, to move it into toward social, or industrial, revolution.

MagiRevo mixes dramatic and slow scenes with bloody battles. Anis the "Marauder Princess" fights magical monsters and takes parts of them for herself. Through it all, Anis becomes the heart of the series. She deals with her father, King Orfans II Palletia (voiced by Kenji Hamada), who dislikes her. Furthermore, her trusted maid Ilia Coral (voiced by Ai Kakuma), becomes her sister of sorts.

The series remains engaging due to the Anis' determination to study science to create magical gadgets. This is coupled with Euphie becoming more sure of herself. While this happens, both women slowly develop feelings for one another.

In some ways, Anis gives off a vibe similar to Chisato in Lycoris Recoil. Other scenes are reminiscent of I'm the Villainess, So I'm Taming the Final Boss, but there are more similarities to a 50-episode webcomic, The Girlfriend Project, which ended last year.

The aforementioned webcomic is set on Earth, and centers on two girls: one from a wealthy family (Ryn) and another from a working-class family (Julia). This anime echoes some of themes. The webcomic and this series both focus on finding one's self, confronting privilege, and dealing with obstinate family members.

However, MagiRevo has more drama and meddling male characters, such as a jealous prince named Asgard (voiced by Shogo Sakata). He is the equivalent of an over-controlling woman, such as Ryn's mother, since he wants to gain power by any means necessary.

MagiRevo depicts monarchies as slow-moving and bureaucratic. The King does administrative work, as does the Prime Minister (and father of Euphie) Grantz Magenta (voiced by Tomohiro Tsuboi). Anis takes bold action without needing anyone's approval. In one episode, she even brings Euphie with her to slay a dragon while the royal council is deciding what to do, enraging him.

This contrasts, in more ways than one, with the "benevolent"/"enlightened" monarchy shown in Elena of Avalor, or the incompetent one in Disenchantment. This is partially because the King in MagiRevo is a reformist, as his Grantz, while he fights against institutionalists and conservatives among the royal ruling class.

MagiRevo more than a yuri isekai. Anis is very principled, which influences Euphie to see the potential for a society with inventions created by Anis. Such qualities are enhanced by her character's sweet nature. She says that magicians should use their magic "to make other smile", rather than to hurt others.

Anis even creates special weapons for Euphie and believes she can make a better world. In other ways, how Anis acts is an indicator of how someone can have independence, even under monarchy, as Elena does, to an extent, in Elena of Avalor.

The villa where Anis lives shares similarities with the Cursed Princess Club in the webcomic of the same name, in that she brings in those who don't have another home. For example, Anis saved her maid, Ilia, from a marriage she didn't want, and Euphie after Prince Asgard dumped her.

Even so, Anis can be reckless, making her more than happy to help Euphie become more certain with herself, and recognize what to do with her life. She also goes to extreme lengths to ensure she can use a power akin to magic. What this means for Anis, is that she implants crystals from a powerful dragon into her body which turns her "into a monster" as the dragon cursed her.

While Prince Algard is a villain without repute, it is funny how Anis intentionally, or unintentionally, shatters his plans. In the end of the fourth episode, Anis and Euphie fly off to fight the dragon while Algard tries to convince the King into fighting the dragon on his own while threatening his authority. This is supported by the fact that Anis has more experience, as a high-ranking adventurer, while it is not known if Algard has any battle experience.

MagiRevo is woven together nicely. Other than the cuteness of the show itself, the writers did a good job with the story. Unlike some other series, they don't jump into a relationship between Euphie and Anis. Instead, it is built up over time, making it a slow burn. There are nice scenes of them Euphie together, including when they fight alongside one another, or slow dance at the end of episode 5, even complete with a mutual marriage/relationship proposal.

That is not unique, as the strained friendship between protagonists Catra and Adora is the central theme of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Another recent example is the canonized relationship between Blake Belladonna and Yang Xiao Long in the ninth season/volume of RWBY, a young adult animated series. As such, this makes MagiRevo one of the recent series which has employed a queer slow burn between its characters, something which certain creators prefer over other storytelling methods.

The latter half of MagiRevo builds on what happened in the first half. Even characters such as Tilty Caret, the research partner of Anis, and Lainie Cyan, have more of a role. For Tilty, it means studying curses and medicines, but for Lainie, it involves unknowingly using their power to influence others, a "power of fascination". This was coupled with an novel explanation of "vampires" as humans who manipulate people's thoughts rather than sucking blood.

The show's writers did a good job constructing the friendship, and later romantic feelings, between Anis and Euphie. Both complement each other in some many ways, with Euphie as more practical in her attempt to trying to sell the idea of magicology concocted by her friend, Anis, to those who are skeptical. Their connection is only enhanced later in the series, with Euphie going along with Anis, who believed she had to accept her royal birthright.

These plotlines are expanded in MagiRevo with the presence of various enemies. The brother of Anis, Algard, wants to take power for his own gain. He goes to extremes in an effort to change the kingdom, even stabbing himself in the chest with a magic crystal, and fighting his sister. Their battle is only stopped by Euphie in the nick of time.

Algard embodies a similar toxicity present in Cassandra in Tangled. The latter is manifested in her actions against Rapunzel, when being manipulated by Zhan Tri. It is also displayed by the traumatized Ash Graven in Final Space after Invictus controlled her toward her former crew members, and an angry catgirl named Catra in She-Ra and the Princess of Power toward the princesses (and Adora herself). Algard is off his rocker and not being dictated by anyone else. This is his own off-the-wall plan. It ends in his banishment to the borderlands and Anis re-inherited as a princess.

One of the well-constructed aspects of MagiRevo is the internal struggle Anis has to confront when faced with the prospect of becoming queen. She does not want this, but resigns herself to it, even though this means abandoning her passion for magicology. The fact that Euphie sees through this, and tries to do whatever she can to ensure that Anis doesn't become queen, is a testament to her character! In fact, Euphie even agrees to take up a spirit contract with Lumi so she can enter the royal family, and will live forever, as she will become a spirit.

The last two episodes of MagiRevo bring home everything that has happened in the series. Anis tries to hold onto her identity as a princess and doesn't want it to be to be stripped away. I liked that Euphie directly challenges this mentality, coming off so strong that they end up fighting one another in the final episode.

Although Anis is unsuccessful, and Euphie wins the fight, they still respect one another. This isn't a series where they break apart, but grow closer instead. In fact, Anis even confides in Euphie that she has memories from her past life and wonders whether she is "real" or "fake", with Euphie providing the reassurance that she is human after all.

The final episode ended very powerfully in terms of the romantic development between Anis and Euphie, including multiple kisses, and implied sex. This wasn't something new in the series, as they are shown sleeping together many times. Unfortunately, Anis' father declares that Euphie is her "sister" now, a oft-used trope in anime. However, it appears that Euphie is only a sister on paper and a formality, as both of them are not related by blood.

The final episode sets the stage for a possible second season, with the King and Queen stepping down, becoming simple farmers, making way for Euphie and Anis as the new rulers. The latter both commission flying ships which remind me of those in the classic 2000s Disney films Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Atlantis: Milo's Return. Whether that was intentional on the part of the character designers, or they were basing them on the manga, I don't know. In any case, the series ends on a strong note, with Euphie and Anis flying in the sky together, while Lainie becomes an apprentice of Illa.

The voice cast is a strength of MagiRevo. Protagonists Euphie, Anis, and Ilia are voiced by Manaka Iwami, Sayaka Senbongi, and Ai Kakuma. These individuals have experience voicing characters in Fruits Basket, Re:Zero, Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club, Spy × Family, The Demon Girl Next Door, I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level, and As Miss Beelzebub Likes.

Additional cast are newer to voiceover work, such as Hina Yomiya (who voices Lainie Cyan) and Arisa Kinami. Others are more seasoned, like Kenji Hamada, Shogo Sakata, Tomohiro Tsuboi, Hiromichi Tezuka and Yū Sasahara (who voices Tilty Claret).

The voices of the characters of MagiRevo are reinforced by the writing, plot, and animation style of MagiRevo. In the case of the latter, the show's animation studio, Diomedéa, is skilled with animating Squid Girl, Riddle Story of Devil, Girlish Number, and Beatless. But, this is their first yuri series they have worked on.

In any case, the fight with the dragon in the show's fifth episode, the battles that lead up to it, and Euphie saving Anis after she falls from the sky, to give a few examples, are emblematic of the amazing animation quality of MagiRevo.

The writer of this anime, Wataru Watari, has just as much experience. He was the screenwriter and creator My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU, but worked on various other series, including Qualidea Code, Girlish Number, Domestic Girlfriend, Get Up! Get Live!, and The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent. Watari is not alone in this, as series director Shingo Tamaki worked on some of the same series, along with others, like Fuuka, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, and Future Diary.

MagiRevo is supported by Moe Hyuga, music composer for the series. He has composed music on some shows I've watched in the past, like Heroines Run the Show and If My Favorite Pop Idol Made it to the Budokan, I Would Die, and those I haven't seen, like O Maidens in Your Savage Season and Steins;Gate 0.

Hyuga's music matches the show's scenes, accompanying the action and drama, making it more impactful. A series can do well, or poorly, depending on its music score, and this series excels in that regard, in more ways than one.

The series grapples with the issues of class discrimination and division in society. It also touches on the topic of parental abuse, which some might think is treated "poorly" in the series. Such a perception is incorrect. Instead, the series primarily shows that the Anis' parents don't know what do with her. They see her as a bit of a wild child. They learn that she is much more than that and has vulnerabilities just like them. As a result, they bond with her and provide her support as she deals with her personal struggles. Hopefully this can be expanded in a second season.

MagiRevo comes at a time that LGBTQ representation in Western media is declining. GLAAD, which partners with major companies, recently admitted this in their "Where We Are on TV" report. They stated that 29% of characters in television programs will not be returning either because of a character dying, leaving the show, or the show being cancelled, ended, or shelved.

In contrast, despite overwork, and bad working conditions, in the anime industry, yuri anime continue to be produced. This year, apart from MagiRevo, the yurish Ippon Again! is airing, as is Soaring Sky! PreCure, while Nijiyon Animation and D4DJ All Mix ended.

This series sets a high standard for other yuri series in the future. With the premiere of new seasons of Tokyo Mew Mew New, Birdie Wing, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, and Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear in April, as well as the debut of Yuri is My Job!, it remains to be seen if these series will be as impactful.

The same can be said for Genjitsu no Yohane: Sunshine in the Mirror (airing in July), The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess (airing in October), Whisper Me a Love Song (airing in January 2024), and I'm in Love with the Villainess and Hoshikuzu Telepath which will air at some point this year. This is also the case for Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club Next Sky (an OVA), Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games, Vampeerz, Laid-Back Camp season 3, and I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level season 2, which are in development.
