Series: They Say I Shouldn't, But...

One dinner later, days passed and things became… Not better. Not at all. Far from it. One would think that it would be easier to be honest but Eula could not say that at all. In fact, the thoughts had only gotten worse.
The conversation at good Hunter had not been that bad. Ann, was it? The only daughter of the Von Lupus family. Never had she expected to run into the young woman in the first place. And Eula had no idea either. But it was what it was in the end. And the two had been talking for a good while, maybe a little too long. They had even forgotten about Amber, only realizing at the end of this dinner that she had been present to begin with. She told both of them to not worry about it of course with her usual smile yet that didn’t exactly help the guilt… As short lived as it was to be honest.
Because things only became more and more irritating since and Eula just couldn’t wrap her head around it. She had a hard time concentrating and the training dummies had to be the sacrifice, being sliced into pieces one by one each day. She claimed to ‘blow off some steam’ and it wasn’t exactly wrong. It was that and her trying to sort out her own thoughts. But nothing was working. Brute force was obviously not the answer but it was frustrating the knight beyond belief. She was even more of a mess by the day, some of her men had taken note and called her out on it. But she said the same thing to them everytime. “ I’m fine! ”
The same response over and over, that she was fine. Just fine. Even if she wasn’t, her mind wandered around all day long. And it all went back to the same girl, to Ann. Why her? What was this nonsense? Eula didn’t get it! She was about to have a headache the more she was thinking about it. It made her all dizzy. Maybe she was wasting too much thought into something which didn’t matter in the end. Yeah, it was probably just that. It didn’t matter, at all. And yet… Yet…
All she did was let out a sudden scream, followed up by: “I have to make her pay! Pay pay pay! This isn’t funny anymore!” And before knowing it several training dummies were sent flying, one after the other, landing as they were being torn into pieces. It was a sight to behold, to say the least, and even Eula may have been impressed that she was able to pull off something like this. Even if it was honestly expected of her at this rate, given her position within the knights themselves. This dinner was a mistake! A big mistake! Not because it went horribly, far from it…
Why can’t she just forget? Actually, why was this even happening to begin with? It didn’t make any sense and was just driving her insane, right against a wa— Wait, no. She shouldn’t even make that comparison, given that she had literally driven Ann against a wall that one time. But what else was Eula supposed to think? If she was a mess like this… She had to sort this out as quickly as possible or it might affect her performance.
As for the reasoning… It was embarrassing to admit but she had asked Amber for that one time. Mainly because the fellow knight had been around at the time of dinner and seen it all. And Eula had no one else to turn to to begin with. Who’d listen to her of all people anyway!? And even then, Amber’s suggestion was something outlandish for the woman’s very own ears. It was something she couldn’t believe in all honesty.
“Maybe you really like her.” Was the suggestion of the Outrider, saying this with no hesitation. And at that time Eula had just looked at Amber in utter shock, as if she just had been hit with the most outrageous claim there ever had been. And yet, it hit, but she wasn’t exactly sure why.
“Have I ever said that I actually dislike her?” She had asked, just to make sure. No, like can mean many things. Like is like. Just like. Nothing more. Yeah, maybe that was just that. Just like. Like. Like. Like like like. Li–
“Haha, of course not. But think about it. You say you think about Ann a lot ever since, right?”
“What’s your point?”
“Hmm… You’re like one of the protagonists in a romance novel!”
“Romance wha—”
“Ah, I just mean it as a maybe! I mean think about how Ann makes you feel, alright?”
That was the advice Eula had gotten. How this woman made her feel… How she felt? Well, the knight couldn’t think straight for one. Literally. And it was confusing. One headache after the other and yet, she didn’t dislike the girl. In fact, maybe—
Ah no! No no no! What was Eula even entertaining here!? What type of thought was this!? Was she taking Amber seriously here!? Because there is just no way at all! Eula being in love with someone like Ann!? That’s just nonsense!
Right, not in love… And she made sure to hold onto that stubborn belief for as long as possible. There was just no way after all… Right?

magnolia ; a flower for cruelty & grief .. for a time where my muse raged in grief and anger as a reaction to a loss in their life.
(Time for dice... 13. Eulanne!)
Eulanne's rage is magnified because of her connection to the Voidsent Umbrosa. So when Ysayle sacrificed herself to stop the Garleans in Azys Lla... It was not the prettiest time.
She was numb as they entered the facility proper, but once they warped to the second island, her anger and grief came out in full force. She decimated the escaped research creatures in an attempt to reach the third island and get at the Garleans. And once she got there, it was a bloodbath. Yasha and the others could not stop the combined might of Eulanne and Umbrosa in time for platoons of Garlean soldiers, mechs, and machinery that awaited them there. She fought without considering her injuries, taking many small wounds in the process. Umbrosa's Astral Aether helped her fight and fight and fight. It took the combined might of all of Jana's job mentors and the other Warriors of Light to stop Eulanne from reaching the Garlean flagship proper and get her back on track to hunt down Thordan.
Eulanne never really processes her grief over Ysayle's sacrifice.

"Well, Yasha, you asked me out here... Is something the matter?" Yda asked the serious gladiator turned Scion following her to a bridge near the Sylphlands.
"I.. um.." Yasha fidgeted with her hands a moment. "I thought we worked well together... again." She rubbed the back of her head with a self conscious grin.
"We did, didn't we." Yda grinned. She took a couple of cheerful steps towards Yasha, an arm behind her back. "But that's something you could've said back in camp, isn't it?" There was mirth and a flirty tone to her voice. "But instead you asked me to come to this beautiful waterfall."
"I think you're beautiful!" Yasha blurted out nearly immediately after Yda's words. She immediately went red and covered her face.
Yda stepped close to Yasha, taking one of her hands and bringing it to her face. "I think you are quite beautiful too, Yasha." She nuzzled Yasha's hand, dropping her own to her side.
Tumblr media
Yasha, a little dumbfounded smiled a goofy grin. She hummed a cheery little ditty before putting her forehead to Yda's aethermeter with a soft thunk. She pulled back with an embarrassed giggle, which Yda joined in with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yasha looked at Yda with dreamy look in her eyes, quietly asking, "May I give you a kiss, Yda?"
"Mmm, yes, I think you may." Yda gave a soft giggle and leaned in close.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yasha leaned in close as well, and gave Yda a soft kiss. One that missed its mark on Yda's waiting lips and instead was clumsily on her cheek. Realizing her error, Yasha reeled back.
"I'msosorryYdaI'vegottago!" Yasha bolted back towards the Gridanian territory, leaving a confused Yda behind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Yasha! Wait!" Yda reached out towards the departing Scion, but with Yasha's embarrassed speed, Yasha quickly vanished into the undergrowth. Yda blinked under her mask a couple of times, before sighing.
Tumblr media
"Oh my, I think I'm falling..." Yda muttered as she gently touched her kissed cheek.
Bonus:
Tumblr media
A day later, back at the Waking Sands.
Tumblr media
Yasha was a blushing mess as she recounted her mishap with Yda in the Black Shroud
Tumblr media
"So, let me get this straight. You asked Yda to a private place, attempted to court her, KISSED her, and then ran away at the first sign of something good happening to both of you?" Jana directly and bluntly laid out the bare bones of Yasha's story.
Tumblr media
"It was quite silly of you Yasha, I do agree with Jana's reasonings. But I'm sure Yda thought you were still quite cute." Eulanne tried to console the mess that was Yasha.
Tumblr media
Jana slammed her hands on the table, roaring, "It's not very the worst that you did that night! You had a chance to actually see under Yda's mask and you messed up your opportunity! I am so disappointed in you Yasha!"
Tumblr media
"Now, now, Jana. Yasha is still a fledgling. And frankly, the fact that you haven't seen Yda's lovely eyes is a problem of your own." A'tyla finally butted in with a laugh, turning Jana's attention towards her instead of Yasha.
"Wait, what? You've seen Yda's eyes!" Jana incredulously turned to A'tyla.
"Yes."
"Do tell!" Jana scooted her chair over to A'tyla with rapt attention.
"A lady never gives out her secrets." A'tyla taps the side of her nose with a wink.
"WHY YOU MAGE!" Jana flared up again, reaching for her staff.
All while that was happening Eulanne had scooted over to Yasha and patted her on the shoulder. "You'll likely get a second chance hotshot, just close your eyes after you make contact with her lips."
Yasha just sank even deeper into her chair as she turned an even darker shade of red.

Ever since that conversation the feather was just moving on its own. Ann did not need to think long about words, how she wanted to phrase things. Their head was full of ideas, them even humming each time they were writing down whichever word came into their mind. It was a quick process, they did not need to waste too much thought on it. They were just writing down one word after the other, managing to create coherent sentences in no time! That was how fluid their writing was at this point. They had forgotten the time, perhaps even having forgotten when to sleep and eat. But that was not important at the moment. They had been in a literal rush and they couldn’t back out of it now! Not like they were going to anyway…
The story was piecing itself together – A young knight going on various adventures. Her having been wronged by everyone around her, her family and the townsfolk. Journeys to prove herself, one test after the other to win the favors of those around her, prove that she was not even close to the role everyone wanted to shove her into. Small tasks yet also massive ones, one after the other. Bit by bit. Each adventure had been living vividly in Ann’s own head, them unable to stop themself. Yeah, this idea should work! People might enjoy such a tale. No, her many tales! Surely, they would be something to behold! Or at least entertain… They should not get too ahead of themself here.
And yet, when reading through the lines while writing with their feather, they paused these movements for a moment. Their eyes were scanning the lines again, over and over, reading what they had decided to write.
‘ Seeking out the knight, that was what they had desired after so long. She was always away, far away. The country wasn’t big but big enough to always reside home, waiting for her return. Oh how the lover had craved for her – Not just her touch but also her smile. Just wanting the young Knight to return home safely, like always. It was an unbearable thought after all. Sure, she was strong, they knew that. But tragedy can strike at any time. Oh how they prayed for her. ‘I beg of thee dear Barbatos. Please carry her home safely. Please let the wind protect her, so that she may return home and I can hold my beloved in my arms once more.’ They would pray at every opportunity – Morning, afternoon and evening.
Oh how painful this was, being so far apart from another. The longing only became stronger the more time passed. This was unbearable, almost cruel. And yet the young lover had to hope. They had to trust the Lady Knight, put their faith into her. She will come home. She will. And once she has returned home, the two could be in each other’s embrace yet again. ’
Once the lines had kicked in they were just staring for a good few moments. Ann had done it again, hadn’t they? Yet again a tale featuring this ‘lover’ character. Honestly, that had not even been planned. They were just writing away and before they knew it they had worked on a love story in between all the trails and fights going on. A person who was yearning for the knight, wanting to stay close no matter what. All based on the imagery they constantly played in their own head, the imagery of Eula right in their head. Right with a beloved, a young person who—
Wait, hold that thought. This was starting to sound like something. Something more… What had Amber once asked?
“Are you sure it’s really just for a story?”
Back then they had answered it with a (more or less) clear ‘Yes’. It was just a story, nothing more. Right? That’s why they wanted to get to know Eula, having more inspiration and material to work with. Create a protagonist who is resembling her. Yeah, just that. A protagonist who is doing just that! And yet… Everytime they pictured anything they couldn’t help but be in awe before drifting into a daydream and essentially doing just that… Noting the daydream they were having down.
At first Ann had paid no mind to it. It was nothing after all and it could have been an interesting plot element. Yet they got sidetracked yet again, focusing more on one aspect, one they shouldn’t. But they did. And the more they read it over and over the more it started to sound like their inner desires. Something they wanted deep down. Because the more they read it the more they saw themself in there… Them being the lover yearning for the Lady Knight. Said Lady Knight being Eula of course…
It made them sit in their chair, staring onto the ceiling and consider all of this, each of the options. Is it just a story at this point? Is it really just that? Or is this more? Was this all just an excuse to live out their own fantasies on paper? Fantasies they had? It started to look like it, certainly. Desires, wishes, longings – All of it. The only thing making sense. It would explain the heart beating each time they were writing anything with this protagonist.
Yeah, there was no denying. They desired her, the Spindrift Knight. They wanted to be with her no matter what, be the one in her arms and… And…
Ah, this is a case of full on lovesickness, isn’t it?

It had been out of nowhere, just when Ann had decided to take a walk around Mondstadt. It was rare for them to do so. Honestly, they were just forcing themself to take a break. They couldn’t stay inside their home and write all day and night long. It would be a dream coming true, if they could just live like that all the time. But alas, life was not so simple nor so kind. If they didn’t push themself to take a break here and there, who knows where it might lead to. Plus otherwise they would just constantly get nagged at in the several letters. ‘Take a break Sis! Your stories are running nowhere!’ Perhaps there was a point to be made here. Usually they would not be too fond of breaks though, always wondering what to do instead of writing or anything related to it. What do people do other than that? It was something They were secretly wondering about sometimes… That was until this day. Then again, maybe it had also been a reaction because they were somewhat mesmerized by the sight.
The brunette had wandered a bit away from town. They had honestly not even noticed until the wind had almost blown off their small hat, going through their hair. It had been a little stronger than usual, then they were used to. It forced them to wake up and look around, spotting the grass as well as a lake nearby. The rays of the sun were bright, bright enough for the lake to sparkle. With the remaining breeze from the strong wind earlier it was already a sight of its own, one the young person couldn’t help but admire… For only a short moment. Because they had been distracted shortly after, another sight captivated them. The moment they had laid their eyes upon it… Or rather, her.
The image was very different from what Ann had been used to, let alone what they usually imagined. An ice cold lady who will put you into place, always having a stern expression on her face… Not afraid to raise her voice at any moment, no matter who you are, and carrying herself with the necessary pride. Though to the point where she can come off as arrogant, to say the least. There is a reason that people send her off after all, Ann would not argue about that. But at this moment… She didn’t come off like that. For a moment they had even questioned if it was actually Eula Lawrence or if it had been a secret twin of hers the public did not know about. But that guess was absurd. It had to be Eula. It just had to be.
The way she was moving, how she was presenting herself… As if on a stage. They had no idea what dance it was but given the movements of her feet and arms they knew that it had to be some sort of dance. They were honestly not too accustomed with all of Mondstadt’s traditions, at least ancient ones, so they could not recognize it. But it did not matter. The way she was moving, holding a rhythm despite there being no sound of music. Maybe she was just playing it in her head. It was elegant, perhaps more than they would think. Sure, she was a noble woman but given her harsh words this was honestly a little unexpected. It was captivating, one move after the other. She presented it with so much confidence. Even if there was no audience, or one she may not have been aware of, each step just fit. It was… Perfect, dare they say? Well, to their unprofessional eye at least. Maybe a professional would think differently about it.
It was like a spell – Ann had fallen target to it. They were in a trance, literally, having eyes for nothing else but the young woman right then and there. A different side yet a side they admired in mere seconds all the same. They just couldn’t look away. It was impossible, literally. So very impossible. Everything else seemed blurry. Only Eula had been in clear view. It was easy to get lost in this sight. And yet, all the same they were asking themself… Was this really her? Was this really the Spindrift Knight they got to see a few times? It seemed too good to be true. Catching her at a moment like this… Honestly, they could watch for hours and their words would still not be enough to describe—
“Hey! What are you doing here!?” And yet, one sentence was enough to rip Ann out of their own thoughts, literally. When they had noticed they were startled, enough that they jumped on the spot for a moment, having been more than startled. Their dreamed gaze was gone and they had been brought back to reality… Though they honestly would have rather been not brought back to it. Because the two had been coming face to face, to the point the face of the female was right in their face.
It had been Eula, of course it had to be her. Her face was so close, her gaze ready to pierce through the young person. The words were stuck in their mouth, unable to get out a word. It was nothing but nonsensical stutter. “I… Uhm… I… Well…” was the most they could say. Ah, coming face to face with her of all people! Never had they ever thought they would. And it was too much, as they had thought! Facing a woman like her after all…
“I have asked you a question!” She continued regardless, her voice not calming down. In fact, her gaze became sharper. May as well stab them with her claymore while at it.
And yet, all it did was make their legs wobble, wanting to turn into a puddle or become one with the ground. “I… Passed by…” They managed to force it out of their mouth, even if extremely slowly. It took more courage than thought to even get out a peep, literally. No, they can’t handle this! They had to get out of here!
Even worse when they felt that Eula’s gaze was scanning their entire body – Their gaze wandering around and their posture. And she would most likely not be pleased. Actually, she made it known. “Look at me while you’re speaking and repeat your words!” She demanded. “Hold eye contact while speaking to someone! Do you have any idea who you are—”
“I’m sorry! I’ll leave you alone!” It shot out of Ann’s mouth, out of literal nowhere. They couldn’t handle it – The pressure as well as the young knight’s presence. It was just too much, way too much. So, before they could hear any other word they quickly turned around, running off without a warning. At most they heard a ‘Hey! Get back here!’ from the mouth of the woman but it was too late. Ann had decided to flee the scene.
Yeah, this was too embarrassing! They could never! Watching from afar was already too much but face to face!? No way! This was too much on them! It was impossible for them to get closer to her! Impossible! Literally impossible!

Chapter 1 - Admiration From Afar

Usually the people in Mondstadt do not take too kindly to anyone from the Lawrence clan and Eula is of course no exception to this. Most in Mondstadt rather avoid her if anything. Thus it may have caught anyone off guard when there is someone in Mondstadt who does not seem to mind at all, in fact has been lurking from time to time. A quick glance whenever they had been outside when seeing the Spindrift Knight pass by, taking in the mere sight. It was nothing else however, nothing but admiration. Because the thought of approaching her was terrifying. Not because of the connections to the Lawrence clan but because of the status as a noble, let alone being one of the Knights Of Favonius. And then the conversations they had overheard… They could only imagine how it would go…
“You! Why have you approached me!? Firstly, you should make sure to greet someone properly instead of stuttering around! And look into my eyes if I speak to you! Your posture is also lacking! Stand straight! This is not how you speak to anyone, especially not a noblewoman! Where have you been raised!?”
And that possibility alone made them a little nervous and they would just run should she ever spot them. Not like they could get any closer to begin with. They were leagues apart from one another, it may as well have been two completely different worlds. Ah, no, wrong. They do live in two different worlds. She is a knight, well respected within her ranks most likely, and they are just a mere writer, doing usually nothing but write their own stories in their small house. Yeah, there was no need to try, it would be hopeless. So all they could do was to admire. Though they had no idea why, what made them always look at Eula and no one else for that matter. Why were they acting up to begin with? It was something they did not understand, at all, and thinking about it made their head hurt. It was a confusing time, really, and felt rather irrational.
They hated that they had no answer for this, even when asked by a Mondstadter who had caught them staring.
" Ann, dear? Is there something interesting?  An old woman had asked them, making them flinch and their cheeks burn, as if caught red handed. And yet there was nothing to feel caught for… Right?
“ Ah! No, it's nothing! Nothing at all! ” They had responded that time, though the tone was nervous, as if they had something to hide. The old lady had taken a peek, not believing a single word and then… The next sentence was all too obvious.
“ Are you eyeing that woman? She had asked, her tone switching to a hint of disgust, all occurring the moment she had spotted the Spindrift Knight.
All Ann did by then was nod, redness not disappearing and their mind racing. It was weird. And yet, that was how they had felt at that time.
“ I will give you some well meant advice – Do not involve yourself with someone like her. She is one of them after all. ”
“ Huh? I… know that but– ”
“ Then you should know what's best for you. Do not involve yourself with the Lawrence clan in any way. ”
That had been the only thing they had heard whenever speaking to anyone about it – To not involve themself with Eula. Because she is a Lawrence and the Lawrence have an awful reputation, being the former rulers and wanting to rise to power yet again, stubborn on this belief. And most were acting up. Ann had seen it themself…
Then again, maybe that was what made Eula so interesting? After all, she is part of the Knights Of Favonius so she can’t be that bad, can she? And when taking a look she came off different from the usual Lawrence noble. That did not make her any less terrifying to approach of course but… Honestly, hearing all of this only made them more curious if anything, if that made sense. Besides, isn’t it common logic? if something is forbidden, then maybe, just maybe… One could become more curious. Wait, maybe that was why they were so curious? No, it did not end up exactly either.
And yet, everyone was just making it more and more tempting as time went on. The longer this went on, the more they were hearing… Ah no, this is all some dream. This would never happen. They were not hoping for it. Though the thought—
Ah no. No use daydreaming. There was no pint. There was no chance and that was that. The admiration will always stay at a distance, won’t it? Yeah, it will…
Or so they had believed for months… Because technically… You never know, do you?

Chapter 22 - Infiltration

“Don’t go running around so innocently! It was you, wasn’t it!? Of course it was! Scram unless you want to confess and tell us where you are hiding her!”
An accusation which should not be taken lightly and yet, Eula understood somewhat where the townspeople were coming from. After all, the Lawrence clan was infamous for not just its past but also its present. Even when little she had heard of several incidents, some she wished she would be able to unhear. Disposing of people they don’t like or deem a threat was not uncommon for most of them. Her family would step that low if they really had to. All to ‘restore to former glory’ someday. Former glory though… What glory? There was no glory to be found here, not with them. They still think they are in the right, that their reign was justified. How laughable.
Yet of course that also meant that they would get rid of someone who did not fit into their image. And Ann may as well have been the person. After all, it was weird for anyone to stay close to a Lawrence. Even Eula herself had been confused for a long while. She didn’t get it. She was always side eyed, glared at or shooed away. So hearing that someone was willing to get closer to her was a surprise of its own. But it would raise eyebrows, especially to this extent. So her family getting all sorts of ideas was not too surprising. That or… Honestly, they did not need a reason to dispose of anyone honestly. They would just go on ahead, making sure that no one will catch on. And yet, given their reputation it is nothing but an open secret. The only thing anyone lacks is the necessary evidence. And yet, maybe it was the obvious answer. The least Eula could do was check it out, see if they maybe have decided to take Ann and push them into one of their cells. It was a possibility.
Despite it being unsightly behavior she could not just stand there and do nothing. So in the end the young noblewoman gave in, deciding to at least give her own home a closer look. Of course it would require her to sneak around, especially since she would be sneaking around the deepest parts of the entire building. And it was already as massive as it was. But what if it was true? What if they had taken Ann and kept her there for days now? Maybe Eula was just paranoid…
Hah, this ended as badly as she could imagine. No, even worse. All because she let the young woman get closer. Now she may be in this mess. Maybe this was a mistake. Maybe Eula shouldn’t have given in. Because what if it was too late? What if… It was all a what if yet it was a possibility. And even if Ann survived, made it through this torture… She would just put herself at risk. Hopefully she is no such fool and yet knowing that woman, she probably could be. She was stubborn after all… Putting herself in danger like this, what an idiot. Maybe the decision was rash but thinking about it all… Maybe she would blame Eula for this. And rightfully so. Agh, there was nothing but guilt overcoming her! Fear and guilt. But that made the decision easier, as painful as it would be. Right, it was an obvious plan. It was for the best if the two were not to see another again. After all, who says that it wouldn’t happen again? The thought made Eula’s own stomach turn but what choice did she have!? Or so it felt like… Sometimes it is best to keep people at an arm’s length.
She didn’t get it anyway honestly, why Ann was so persistent, why she insisted on staying close to the noblewoman. Even if her own reputation could be damaged, the risk of being seen as a traitor… Why did she not care? It was so hard to understand… That girl didn’t make sense. At all. She just didn’t.
But the thoughts had to be brushed aside. Eula was looking through one room after the other, one cell after the next. Surely if her family kept the girl somewhere she would not get kind treatment. And yet, so far nothing. Maybe it was a false alarm? But even then, it would be worse. Because the search would continue. Secretly Eula may have hoped to find Ann here. Just so she can get this over with. Both possible fates were cruel – Being killed by a wild beast or killed by the hands of a Lawrence. It left her both uneasy. Honestly, at this rate she was just praying that the girl was alive at least. That was all she was asking for right now. It was the first step of finding her. And yet, hope seemed to nearly vanish.
It was all smelly, like rotten corpses. This place has not been cleaned in centuries, has it? Not much of a light either, forcing Eula to have lit a small candle herself to even see anything. And yet, she did not see much. It was nighttime, sure, but would it honestly matter? No, not really. It’s not as if light was in there to begin with. It would never shine through, supposed to give the prisoners no sense of hope. ‘ This is where you die ’ and the people mostly kept rotting in there, not being taken care of. It was sickening beyond belief. And yet, Eula would keep looking, until the last cell. Only then she would assume either the worst or wonder if Ann had not been somewhere else.
And yet, there was a voice she heard mumbling after what felt like hours of wandering. It made her stop dead in her tracks and take several turns before noticing that it had been a little further away. So Eula’s legs carried her there until hearing the voice behind the door.
It was locked when she tried to push down the door knob so there was no choice… Smash it in! After placing the candle somewhere safe of course and turning the small light out. She would have to make due with the outlines she was seeing.
The knight had expected this, grabbing her claymore in an instant and literally smashing it open, perhaps a little too loudly. She had to check who it was in there, being desperate at this point, just hoping by now.
The door had been torn into pieces in a matter of seconds, slammed across the room against the opposing wall before crumbling into dust. Eula panted as a result, it had taken some of the energy out of her. And yet, she did not stop, dropping her weapon at first before walking inside. Her eyes only slowly adjusted to the dark before spotting an outline of a person, laying on the ground… Somewhat. They had shot their head up in surprise, most likely startled by this entrance.
“Ann!? Is that you!?” The knight decided to ask while running over. And even if it wasn’t, she was not going to leave someone in here behind. However, a moment of relief when hearing their answer…
“Huh!? How did you—” She was about to respond yet then noticed, adding: “Wait… Eula?”
Yes! It was her! But she did not waste her breath further, only hurrying over to make her hands trail around a little, yet carefully. Soon enough she would notice that the hands and legs were tied up, surprisingly tightly, thus untying them in one swoop. “We’re going to have a talk later you hear!?” She even said somewhat scolding. Honestly, she didn’t know why it slipped out like that. But it did. Maybe because she was worried. Regardless, there was no time for this. Before Eula could even hear another answer of Ann’s she grabbed the brunette’s arm and lifted her up quickly, off the ground. “There’s no time!”
“N… No time? But I still don’t know how—”
“Who wouldn’t at least take a look around here?” Eula interrupted, knowing that she just got lucky. Accusing her own family of this… And yet, it was exactly that. It was their style. This wasn’t their first time after all. “Anyway, save it for later! We’re in a rush!”
“Rush? W… We—”
“Stop talking and just come with me already!” Another interruption yet Eula was not having it. So she dragged Ann out with her after having picked up her claymore, then speeding up with her own two feet. It was so loud it was only a matter of time until anyone would catch on that—
“Halt! Who goes there!?”

Their eyes opened, though slowly, extremely slowly. And even then the view was extremely blurry to be honest, at least for the first few seconds. The eyes took their sweet time to adjust yet once they did Ann may as well have been blinded by the mere light which was shone right onto them. They wanted to cover it up with their hands but couldn’t because once they wanted to move them they noticed them on their back, tied together. It was tight, so tight that their wrists started to hurt the moment they had become aware. In fact, they nearly believed that their hands were going to fall off at any second now. And yet, they couldn’t free them. They had to endure the pain no matter what. And thus they had their eyes closed, but not for long.
“Ey, open them you brat!” They heard a male voice echoing through their very own ears. It had them startled, enough to make them open them… Only to be met with the unbearing light yet again, only spotting the silhouette of a tall male, seeming to have his head lowered to stare at the person right beneath him. He was just standing there, probably looking, yet who is to say that he would not hesitate to slap them or something? They seemed to be unable to move, feeling their legs tied up also, forcing them to sit on the cold floor beneath. So they had to oblige, no matter what. “And don’t close them! Speak when I tell you to!”
His voice was loud, unbearably so. Their ears hurt from the volume alone so the echo only made it worse. They wanted to flinch yet couldn’t. So all they could do was nod while trying to keep their body still. What was this atmosphere? What was going on? Where were they? And who was he? Answers they would never get but did it matter? No. Because there was an air of uncertainty filling the place. The unknown, not sure what will happen next in a situation like this. Who knows, one wrong move and it could be off with their head. They did not know what this man (or so they assumed honestly) wanted from them. They could never be so certain. Especially when being tied up like this… It was far from a good sign. No one in their right mind wouldn’t be scared… Or so they would like to think at least.
And yet, it wouldn’t stop there. Because soon enough they felt the top of their head grabbed tightly, their hair being pulled right up. They felt their body slightly going up as a result, being forced to look at the shilouette’s face. And despite only being able to see a little bit they could feel the gaze right at them, so cold, ready to be ruthless if he had to be. “You better fess up now little spy!”
“S… Spy? But I—” Yet they were silenced by feeling a palm across their face, leaving a mark most likely.
“Didn’t I say to only speak when I tell you to!?” He screamed before shoving them back onto the ground. “Why else would you spend time with this girl of ours!? You are looking for something, aren’t you!?”
Ann couldn’t help but remain silent at this point… Their chest was pounding, though for all the wrong reasons. They knew exactly that if they said something now he would not take kindly to that. And yet, they were just confused. Spy? Spy on who!? And who is this ‘girl’ he–
Wait, right… They could at least take a guess. Once more thinking back to what the old lady had said… That they were not knowing what they got themself into… The Lawrence clan. But was it really that big of a deal to them? After all—
“So you better speak up. Or you won’t see another day!” The man continued to threaten them, stepping closer and forcing their head up yet again. “You’re spy, right!? Right!?”
Another moment of silence. They weren’t sure what to say, what to think… If they were even allowed to—
“Speak!”
“N… No, I—” They were about to respond, quietly, voice shivering yet that seemed to have been the wrong answer.
“Don’t make me laugh with your lies! Who hired you!? Huh!?” His tone only became more and more aggressive, making them want to escape and cower in fear, right in the next best corner.
“N… No one di—”
“Hah! As if a brat like you isn’t in desperate need for money! Look at your rags you call clothing! As if anyone cares for your shitty lullabies!”
They felt their eyebrows furrow for just a moment, wanting to growl? What did he just call their writing? The nerve! But it was stuck in their throat, afraid to talk back. What could they do at this point? Nothing. They didn’t even know how to untie the rope across their arms and legs. So it would not be a smart move to behave as if they could do something right now. And that was terrifying… And they hated that they had to take this insult.
“Now say! Who hired you!?”
“N… No one!”
“Don’t bullshit me!”
“It’s true! I don’t know what you are talking about Sir!”
A moment of silence, them noticing that they rose their own voice a little. It made them nearly gasp the moment they had noticed, wanting to apologize. Wrong timing! If they did that then who knows… Oh who knows! They did it now, didn’t they!? Ah drat! This was—
And yet, at least for now they were let off the hook it seemed. He let go, letting them drop to the ground before turning away. “Tch, no good to ask you now. I’ll wait. Maybe later you’ll be ready to talk.”
And before knowing it he left them. The room had gone dark yet again, making Ann stare at the door, or where they believed it was. This was… Ah god, she was right. The old lady was right. They should’ve been careful but… That would have meant to keep distance. And they didn’t want to do that either… The Lawrence clan, right? Was Eula in on– No, that was not like her.
Yet Ann was too exhausted to think about it, only plopping to the ground, right onto one of their sides, feeling the cold floor. No matter what thoughts went through their head, they only had themself to blame here… Hah, this was probably the worst.
And this went on for days… Enough days. Or was it days? They lost count, they couldn’t even see the sun rise and fall in this room. There were no windows whatsoever. It was just a dark cell or something… Pitch black when no one opened the door and shone a light into the room…
Can’t someone just come and get them out of here already!? But maybe that was asking for too much…

Chapter 20 - Sudden Disappearance

Disappearances are all sudden. Before you know it someone you take at face value can just vanish from the face of the earth, nowhere to be found or seen. Though no one had drawn the conclusion right away. One day? Maybe two… Three at most. One could conclude that maybe she had not been feeling well. After all, the only thing Ann did was write inside the comfort of her home or do research which is writing related. So of course it would be nothing unusual if she one day just fell sick and needed some rest. Most people had thought nothing of it for a while. “ Let the girl have her break ” people said.
And even Eula was somewhat ready to follow that advice. However, when wanting to pay a visit, having finally made some space in her schedule, no one had opened the door. How did she figure out where the young author lived? Simple, by a simple question. And Ann had told her before to begin with during one of the conversations. So it was not hard to find. Usually she would be at home, that is what she had said. And yet, when knocking, no one opened. That was already odd. The door was locked too so maybe she just didn’t want to be disturbed? But for a long while like this… No, she couldn’t. So Eula knocked a few more times, even threatening to open the door by force… Until she has had enough and just kicked in the door full force! Yet once she did… It was empty. Everything was untouched, even the papers which were already prepared on the desk, as if she had not been there for a while.
Word has spread quickly since then and needless to say, it left everyone somewhat startled, terrified perhaps. After all, it was not all too common for someone to go missing. Surely people would have noticed something! Anything!? But no, it had slipped everyone’s radar. Did Ann run or was she apprehended? It was hard to say at this point yet most would assume the latter. Because if she ran, would she really leave her beloved writing tools behind? Given how overly passionate she was about her craft at any point, this was truly unlikely. Girl cannot sit still without a day of working her hands. Unless there was another reason, running off would be unlikely. Wouldn’t she have returned home first for that? But honestly, that was just speculation.
It was unsettling. Things like these happen out of nowhere, of course they do. And yet, even then, Eula could not shake the feeling off that this was part of something bigger. So she asked around, looked around whenever she could. Someone had to after all. To most it would just look like the usual patrol however. Well, in a sense it was. And yet, would it not be weird? A captain concerning herself with a random woman going missing? Maybe but she could still excuse it as ‘this being a knight’s duty’. Of course it was more than a duty for her and she did not do this because she was a knight, far from it. Yet she couldn’t let anyone else know that, at least not yet. That and she would sink into the ground if she revealed her actual reason.
But would she get any answers from the townsfolk? Of course not. Some gave her the silent treatment, others the side eye and some even said: “Don’t go running around so innocently! It was you, wasn’t it!? Of course it was! Scram unless you want to confess and tell us where you are hiding her!” It was one accusation after the other… Of course Eula would be blamed right away. And she was used to it. She even expected it to be completely honest. No one was of help so no information if anyone saw something or noticed something odd about Ann in the last few days. She was at a standstill.
And said standstill was driving her mad! Could no one cooperate for even one second!? Was this really the time for any of that!? It was so exhausting to hear it every single time, to go through it every single time! At this point she is only good at playing a guessing game, isn’t she!? And since days have passed time was running thinner and thinner at the end of the day. And so did her patience to be honest. The more time she loses, the riskier it became. Because what if something is happening!?
She had to take action somehow! If asking won’t help nor getting any useful intel overall, then she has to take matters into her own hands! The question is just where to start!? How would one start with no leads whatsoever!?
But on the other hand… Shouldn’t Eula know her family clan best? Because if she was really starting to consider it… Maybe there was some truth behind the townspeople’s words…

Chapter 19 - Nosy Girls Should Be Silenced!

A day like any other, or so it should have been. At first Ann had not spotted and did not expect anything out of the ordinary. All they did was talk to people while selling their pieces of work, handing it to the townsfolk coming by. There always was a mix of people, coming from all statuses across Mondstadt. So when they had someone in a maid dress approaching they thought nothing of it, not even regarding their gaze. Sure, it was a little unsettling but they had gotten used to it. Not to mention that they knew someone who could be way scarier with that expression! … Yeah, they mean Eula.
Anyhow, when this mysterious maid had approached them and gotten close enough they thought nothing of it at first, turning around with a light smile even, just to be polite. “Ah, hello Miss. I've never seen you around here.” They said calmly, trying to break the ice as soon as possible.
However, there was some silence between the two, the young author only hearing a small scoff coming from her mouth as she was eyeing them carefully, shooting the glare right at them. “Yeah, you're her.” They only heard the maid mumbling.
“Her?” Ann repeated, only puzzled. “Uhm… Do we know each other? Have we met before?“
“Negative.” Was her first response before stepping closer, uncomfortably so. It made them want to take a step back yet couldn't. “I have only a few questions for you from my Master.”
“Mas… ter?” They asked, not sure how to react. What was this about all of a sudden? No, seriously, what–
“What do you hope to gain from the young lady?” The maid interrupted, however, her voice as cold as her eyes.
“Young lady? Who are you–”
“Don't play dumb. You know exactly who I am referring to.” She responded, tone threatening and ready to pick a fight if she really had to. In fact, on closer inspection she had her hands behind her back, not having moved them to the front ever since. One could only wonder what was up with that and Ann was trying to get a glimpse of what it was… Yet couldn’t. There was no way the maid was going to reveal it so easily or mess up. “Now answer.”
And yet, even with that being said so threateningly, all Ann could do was look a little in confusion, still not catching on. Who was this young lady the maid had been talking about? No, really, who!? Who was she!? That was a mystery on its own. But even if they kept asking they would get no response. It was a cycle at this point, the endless asking of ‘who?’, only for them to get no answer.
“You know who you are trying to get information from, you spy!” Was the accusation thrown right at the brunette. Spy? Spy on who for what reason!? They had no idea what this maid was even talking about to be honest. What was she referring to? What was even—
And yet, out of nowhere during this conversation they remembered something the old woman had told them not too long ago… “You can never be too careful! You look a little too close with the young woman from the Lawrence clan!”
Wait, could it be… Was that the warning the old woman had given them? This simple warning… That one warning… One they had not taken seriously, having seen no need to. Because they believed that it was about the usual misconceptions surrounding Eula herself. However, when in this situa— Wait no! They had no proof! What if this was just a misundersta—
“Fine, if I can’t make you talk… We’ll just have to force you ourselves. You come with me.” Before Ann could react however they felt a sudden pain across their body. And once the pain had shot through their body they gazed down… A sudden stab around their waist area, making them drop down. They had barely time to process it, their gaze becoming all black. They saw nothing but black, pitch black… And before knowing it they had no longer any idea what was going on to begin with.
