#Elwing and Earendil are the couple of all time
Text
Silm AU Concept that Won't Leave me Alone:
Earendil falls ill, not long after his marriage. None of the healers in Sirion– human or elven– can explain why. Maybe it's because Idril and Tuor left for Valinor recently, and no one really thinks they'll make it there alive. Maybe it's the plague that's been sweeping through war-torn Beleriand. Maybe his body is just giving up on him– it's not unheard of for half-elves to die that way.
And it's becoming clear that Earendil is dying. Nothing they do helps. Some of Elwing's advisors try to keep her away from his bedside– half out of fear his illness is contagious and half because she spends all her time there, refusing to eat or rest. They're trying to protect her from the horrible truth. It isn't working.
Elwing knows of two great sources of magic. One is her own– inherited from Melian, running far stronger in her blood than any had expected, far stronger than it had in her father. Strong enough that she's spent most of her life learning to hide it. Flowers bloom under her feet, birds flock to her side. Elwing is powerful, but she's young; untrained. She tries to help Earendil. She fails.
And then there is the Silmaril. The Silmaril's power is not like hers. It does not make things grow, or bring the birds and gentle beasts of the world to their doorstep. But it drives away the orcs, keeps the wolves at bay, cuts through the darkness, burns away evil. It is a much more violent kind of purification.
And Elwing thinks, is it not evil coursing through my husband's veins, choking his lungs, threatening to tear him away from me?
She takes the Silmaril and pries it open with a dagger, pouring it's divine light into the abalone-shell cup that Idril had given her before she sailed away. She gives it to Earendil, comforts him, climbs into bed beside him. They hold each other, whisper their marriage vows again in the darkness. When Elwing drifts into sleep, she doesn't know if he'll still be there when she wakes up.
And then Earendil wakes up with clear, bright eyes. It works. It works very well. It works so well that Elwing has to teach Earendil how to hide the new light in his eyes and the shimmer under his skin.
Elwing keeps the Silmaril hidden away after that. Some whisper that she's become obsessed with it, just as her father had. In truth, she's just trying to hide the fact that the gem has no light left. Somehow, she doubts her advisors would approve of her decision.
But she doesn't care, and neither does Earendil. They are happy, and in love. Not long after Earendil's recovery– a recovery most think was a miracle sent by the Valar– they have children. Two very strange children with sharp teeth and bright eyes who they love very much.
It looks like everything will work out for Elwing's little family, right until the day the first letter from Maedhros Feanorian arrives.

He plans on building himself a cabin in the woods, away from civilization and regaining the contact with others slowly.
If it were his decision, Maedhros would probably go on and start appearing publicly again, but it might be kinder on other people not to. He’s relearning self-control and respecting boundaries, he’s not going to leap into politics immediately. (He will get into politics again soon, that much he is sure of, just not perhaps this soon.)
The cabin in the woods sound more appalling every time he thinks about it. Too far away from people, how is he meant to re-accustom others to his presence when there are no others around?
He mentions so much to Caranthir the next time he ends up laying on his brother’s couch, smoking some suspicious leaves Amrod apparently dropped of a few weeks earlier and Moryo just laughs.
„We have a house on Tol Eressea. My wife hates the island, but the taxes for selling property there are horrendous.”
„You’re offering I could stay there?”
„Transferring property to family is free. Promise to reimburse us sensibly once you are able and it’s yours.”
„Your wife won’t mind?”
„She’s been offering the house to every reasonable relative, you’re the first who even considers it. Trust me, she’ll be delighted”
„You know, you were always my favorite brother”
(In a hindsight, he should have probably asked why does his sister in law hate this house so much.)
The first time he saw her, Maedhros was convinced he had seen a ghost.
(She lives on this island, it’s the newest, biggest market they just opened. Why should she not be there?)
(If only he haven’t seen her on bloody a marketplace before.)
The second time it happens, Elwing sees him too and freezes. He considers approaching and apologizing, but Fingon keeps giving him the talks about giving people space, so instead he just nods and gets out of there.
(He considers mentioning that meeting to Fingon, but decides against it. They are only starting to be at ease with one another again and that would worry him too much.)
They keep running at one-another and he knows she’s uncomfortable. He is too. For a brief moment, he plans on giving up this doubtful pleasure (really, new market or not, why are there so many people there, all buying spices?) and going back to shopping on a smaller, local market but then she deliberately snatches the last pink melon from the stand after seeing him reach for it and that really pisses him off.
(Fingon was going to visit, and considering how one flavor he always adored was that of pink Vanyarin melons, Maedhros really doesn’t think he can be blamed for his later actions.)
A week later, he overhears her talking to a woman he can only assume to be Galadriel’s daughter about needing to buy cloves for Earendil’s favorite dish and promptly makes sure to purchase all the remaining ones.
It’s a war now and there’s no knowing who will break down first.
Afterwards, it would be foolish not to expect a retaliation, so the next time Fingon visits he makes sure to get to the market extra early. He reaches the melon-seller, just to be informed that all of the fruits have already been sold out.
A seagull laughs at him.
Better person would have given in. Luckily, he really doubts that Elwing sees him as a better person.
He persuades Caranthir to help him bribe the vendor into sending the next month’s delivery of cloves directly to his house.
(In a hindsight, the unfortunate chain of the house’s ownership is to be blamed on birds. They shit on the porch constantly. Elwing really does not control the local pigeons (but will not, under any condition, ask them to stop, not while he is holding the cloves hostage). It’s not her fault he moved into this neighborhood. They even exchange a couple of semi-polite letters on this matter.)
A couple of years latter, Elrond almost gets an aneurysm after coming across his mother and Maedhros shopping together and discussing which of the vendors has the best tomatoes.

Elven Maturity (Tolkien)
an interesting thing about Tolkien's elves is how historical they are: they are the living history of Middle-Earth as they know it (dwarven records & the avari memories likely differ).
the noldo and silvan elves met in LOTR are OLD. so old that Legolas could very plausibly be interpreted as having suffered being treated as "the baby" for, like, four hundred years.
(i assume that Arwen & her brothers are older simply because their parents became a couple before Thranduil became a king)
the age of Tolkien's elves thusly makes it difficult to discern a true "age of maturity": Galadriel was born before Arda had a sun, Elrond's dad is a star, Elrond married Galadriel's daughter and her grandkids look as old/young as she does when the Fellowship meets them. Arwen was an "adult" by mannish standards when Estel came to live at Imladris but her subsequent move & stay with Grandma Galadriel spares readers the awkward thought of Arwen grooming Aragorn for her husband.
This fixation on Arwen is Key because she is of the Peredhel, the half-elven. The first known peredhel is technically Luthien, born of maia and elf, but it is her child with a human who is the first "true" instance of a peredhel in the sense of a "Schrodinger's Immortal".
The age of elves becomes very pertinent to the modern reader when Dior is seemingly orphaned, married to an elven princess(?), has three kids with her, gets abandoned(?) by his maia grandmother due to his grandfather's violent death & left with said grandfather's throne... by the age of 33. not as in "33 years of The Trees" or "33 years in The Lamps"... 33 solar years. Mannish years. THIRTY THREE.
Dior was the first peredhel to be both mortal (human) and immortal (elf): Luthien was the Tolkien equivalent of a demigod but it's unlikely that that changed the expectations for her, in terms of lifestages or maturity.
Dior though? He was raised by isolationist elves during a Politically Tense period of time and no love story is alluded to, between he and Nimloth. The elves Dior was raised amongst did not think highly of humans nor dwarves (nor other elves) and Dior was the first half demi-god, half human elf known. Did they think that his mannish blood made him quicker to mature & doomed to mortality? Did Dior or any of the persons involved with his marriage have enough experience with ELVEN children, nevermind human children to compare against, to discern how "mature" Dior was or wasn't?
I cannot think of any elven romance that did not take at least a decade or three to result in a promise of "forever" or 'til mortality. This makes the prospect of a 30 year old King Dior, newly father to twin peredhels, a disturbing image.
Then we have Dior's daughter, Elwing, meet the only other peredhel not related to her: Earendil, son of Idril Celebrindal and the human Tuor.
Where Elwing was raised by elves & recently orphaned, Earendil had grown up in Gondolin with both an immortal & mortal parent to mind him. Earendil and Elwing were both 23 when they wed: this I find easier to accept, with the extent of their shared experiences of being refugees and not-wholly elven. that Tuor, a human mortal, is also canonically present helps significantly with my comfort zone: no alarms rang in his head when these two 23 year olds got hitched and thus, by mannish standards, they were two consenting adults.
HOWEVER.
we still do not know what ELVES think makes a wholly mature elf - the Noldor elves that these peredhel live amongst are still adapting to the "quickness" of mortal lifespans, of life beyond Valinor. There is, presumably, still a majority amongst the Noldo who predate the first sunrise: whether the silvans hold alternate expectations of maturity, based on living amongst mortals all this time, is unknown. I would safely consider Earendil to be am adult by human standards: he may have also had the mental faculties of an adult elf as well, thus able to recognise and understand an Eternal Committment.
...Elwing probably doesn't. She was raised amongst elves and likely expected to be exactly like Dior and he like Luthien: part-divine and thus, potentially, mature by default. Her actions upon meeting her childhood nightmares - the Sons of Feanor - seem more in-line with a traumatised youth than a traditionally "wise" elf (or human): she jumped out of a window with a [very definitely cursed] holy lightbulb without much thought to the two small children she left behind.
which... her childhood nightmare was "The Sons Of Feanor Stole My Parents And Brothers": Elwing yeeting herself from a tower does Exactly That, all to keep her "rightful inheritance" (i.e. Luthien's winning a silmaril off Morgoth by sing-off/right of conquest & Elwing being Luthien' direct descendant).
the only way i can read Elwing's actions - did SHE know she could turn into a bird when she yeeted herself? did she ever plan on, y'know, coming back after her understandable panic response? no? straight off to alleged elf heaven? kidnap fam it is then - is as Elwing, young adult of several species and never truly able to be any bar one, being out of her depth and going full maia (as her great-grandmother melian before her).
Elrond taking a few centuries to get together with Celebrian, Arwen then taking a few decades to figure things out with Estel... the difference between these later love stories in contrast to Dior and Elwing (& to elf/elf romances) is Very Striking.
Tolkien's elves can get very, very old. Their societies developed with the core concept of their getting old & living eternally. Elves cannot simply marry on a whim - they had better be certain on their spouse or they're in for a very, very taxing eternity (the Avari have different customs but any cross-cultural exchanging of notes seems to have failed miserably in the face of The Maeglin Situation).
The first [mortal&immortal] peredhel died before the weight of immortality could be felt; the second peredhels all left the realms of mortals very abruptly; the third generation of peredhels had entirely unique circumstances that resulted in Elrond being Elrond, Father Figure to generations of Mortal Men and Designated Sane Voice in every crisis.
I wonder what Elrond would think of his grandfather Dior if he were to ever meet him: Elrond has spent several immortal lifetimes learning all things peredhel. I struggle to think of Dior leaving the halls of Mandos, of Dior adapting easily to life amongst the truly immortal.
And if I consider 33 to be "too young" for a Peredhel to swear eternity to an immortal elf... what does that mean for the wholly elven Maeglin, whose orphaning at 80 solar years lead to his being RAISED in the utterly alien Gondolin? Maeglin, whose tween crush on his cousin (who is, if not "older than the sun" very certainly "old as heck" at this time) became blown entirely out of proportion due to his very existence being a Scandalous Tragedy to the Noldo.
Maeglin dying at 190 is considered "very young for an elf". What humans was Doriath in the habit of noticing for them to consider 30 year old Dior an eligible bachelor?

A take on Elwing that I'd really like to see is one where she goes through several periods in Valinor where she assesses her own past behaviour completely differently. Realising her own mistakes? Wishing fervently she had just given the Feanorians the stupid rock? Going “no, actually, fuck this, I was barely more than a kid and nobody should judge me”? Wishing she’d given up the Silmaril again, this time with an awareness that that would have meant no going to Valinor and no saving the world, but fuck everyone, she should have gotten to raise her own children? Having all the time and resources in the world to further develop her healing craft* and often wishing she’d known this or had that when she was at the Havens of Sirion and refugees arrived malnourished and exhausted, or one of her people came home injured after an encounter with orcs or poisoned from drinking from a stream Morgoth had corrupted... Wondering why it didn’t occur to her to throw the Silmaril in the sea and get on a boat with Elrond and Elros and a couple of trusted followers and disappear somewhere far away to the south? Realizing her responsibilities to her people were important too and she shouldn’t have had to choose between those and her own and her children’s safety? Learning just how powerful oaths are and how little choice the Feanorians had left by the end and feeling bad for them for a while? Then going “actually, fuck them, they still swore an oath that can explicitly turn them against elves, i don’t care what they intended, it’s still their fault and i’ll always hate them”? Being angry at Idril and Tuor for sailing and at Galadriel and Celeborn for going off to the East and at Earendil for being away at sea so much and at Gil-galad and Círdan for not being closer and even her parents for being dead because “i was SO YOUNG and i needed HELP dammit”? No longer even being really angry at anyone but just becoming indifferent to the Noldor in general and the Feanorians in particular? Comingto the opinion that no choice she could reasonably have known to make would have really been better than the choices she made back at Sirion? Becoming close to Celebrían and hearing her stories about Elrond and his refusal to avoid or condemn Maglor with a mix of hurt and anger and pride? Also hearing Celebrían’s stories about her grandchildren and being just proud? All of these in some sort of order please. Bonus points if she has someone to support her in all this and tell her all of her feelings are valid, even when they don’t align with how people expect her to feel.
These don't have to be in a specific logical sequence moving in a particular direction, I just think over a couple thousand years, your opinion of choices you made in your twenties under impossible circumstances would change a lot. It’d probably eventually gravitate towards acceptance and self-compassion, but not necessarily towards forgiving the sons of Feanor. Just ... Elwing is so young when her canon story happens, and I think she would go through a lot of growth and healing after that.
*I’ve decided Elrond and Elros got that talent from their mother. The text states (Elrond) and implies (Elros, because “hands of the king are the hands of a healer”) that both of them had it, why not imagine it ran in the family.

I'm curious, I think you already answered this, but I do not remember, but who are your favorite couples/ships? And couples you don't like? And your favorite characters?
I don't think it's possible to get tired of answering this question 😁
Daeron/Maglor is my favourite ship, the one that got me into writing fic (again, as an adult). Here are some Asks I've answered about them: their dynamic, why I love them, and again. And my and my favourite Daemags fics.
... my other favourite ships are Maglor/Whoever I Can Rationalise Pairing Him With (e.g., Maedhros, Finrod, Fingolfin, Glorfindel, OCs). I also like certain dynamics of Daeron/Luthien, Daeron/Finrod, Celegorm/Finrod, Aredhel/Turgon, Earendil/Elwing, and Feanor/Nerdanel. My favourite OT3s are Idril/Tuor/Voronwe and Fingon/Maedhros/Maglor.
There's only one currently popular ship I am indifferent about and it's more to do with it being a Second Age ship than the ship itself. I'm just not that interested in the Second Age. Doesn't mean I don't or won't read fics set then, or for that ship. There aren't any ships I'd never at least try out.
I'm sure you'll be shocked to know my favourite Silm character for all time (22 years and counting) is... MAGLOR.
The best Silm characters in my opinion, from a literary perspective, are Feanor and Turin.
Thank you for giving me the chance to talk about my blorbos!
There are so many men on this list I'm terrible.

Elwing and Eärendil? I have Thoughts about them and now I wonder what yours are
Tumblr media
Oh boy you got me 😔
I know this is a really uh…controversial take, but I don’t ship them. Everything about them smacks of imprisonment. Like get a divorce already.
I think they got married way too young way too fast and that actually neither of them enjoyed being married, and Eärendil didn’t enjoy being a father and Elwing didn’t enjoy being a mother. Eärendil is constantly gone (????) and wanted to make the choice of Men, but Elwing talked him into making the choice to be counted amount the Eldar (entrapment) which then leads to him having his heroic big moment against the dragon only to be essentially imprisoned for the rest of his life as a star (entrapment). Like not to discount how cool they were for sailing to Valinor & petitioning for aid, and Elwing’s sacrifice to jump into the ocean with the Silmaril — but they both read as sort of an antithesis to Beren and Lúthien for me. Beren and Lúthien chose their destinies and went to them gladly. Eärendil seems to rage against his for his entire life only to be trapped by it in the end, and Elwing is a tragic victim of her birthright as heir to Doriath, a child monarch who is crowned before she’s old enough to understand what that kind of responsibility even means who “dies” well before her time, just as Dior did. These two are drenched in tragedy.
But like, not in a fun way IMO? I think Eärendil really resented Elwing for the Choice they both made and it really feels like he never wanted to be around at all, for the amount that he’s just not present in the narrative of Sirion — in theory he ought to be father and king consort — and also ought to be a ruler in his own right over the refugees from Gondolin. He’s heir to Gondolin after all. And he has two heirs of his own to raise. Instead he’s Eärendil the mariner and it feels to me like he just shirks all that responsibility because he craves freedom. He’s the classic runaway price archetype who does the Big Hero Things…but at what cost? Tolkien makes it clear in characters like Eowyn that the Big Damn Hero Thing is not really the ideal which he lauds. Better to live a quiet life than to yearn for a vainglorious death (again…Earendil’s fight against the dragon feels almost…suicidal to me? On the one hand it’s cool. On the other hand it resulted in the drowning of beleriand. It’s like Eärendil wanted to be the subject of songs and tales, always wanted to burn out fast and bright. Etc etc. and then he’s left in stasis with the Silmaril in the sky…)
I’m rambling oh my god, in any case I dislike both of them and I especially dislike them together. They feel to me like those couples who were really cute in high school but then got married before their brains were done developing, had kids too early, and now Dad is Always Working and Mom has postpartum depression and a wine problem and you just wish they’d get a divorce already but they won’t because they’re both too unpleasant and stubborn to do so. I don’t think either of them were ready or equipped to be parents and while I am grateful that they got married & had kids so then we get Elrond and Elros, I don’t think it was good for them and they would have been way better off apart.

So, I've read yours and many others' wonderful Elwing appreciation posts and it's such a delight to read them, so forgive me for being curious but what about Earendil? What do you love about him? And do you have any headcanon or takes about him? Sorry, I love that you're not only an Elwing but a Earendil enjoyer as well. His situation makes me sad but I admire his bravery and initiative.
Hello ヾ(•ω•`)o Admittedly, I haven't given as much thought to Earendil as to Elwing, but I do think he's an interesting guy!
Like Elwing, he is a child of war, though he was lucky enough to have both his parents survive. He lost his entire home in Gondolin, his grandfather, and many of his friends (in some drafts of The Fall of Gondolin, he specifically asks about Ecthelion as they're fleeing the city and is grieved to hear of Ecthelion's death).
Like Elwing, his people settle in Sirion to try to rebuild (iirc the Doriathrim were already established there at the time the Gondolindrim refugees arrived).
And I so love the idea of his and Elwing having been childhood friends and playmates before they became a couple <3 Generally I think of him as a pretty chill, amiable type of person. Very low-key, even as the lord of Sirion, and always ready to help (even when he really doesn't have time!) I think he likes animals, especially seabirds, and he can be excitable about things he's enthusiastic about. He was over the moon about getting his own boat the first time.
I think his attachment to the sea and sailing is a really interesting thing to explore and how that impacts his life on shore. I imagine there were times his work as a mariner was frustrating to him and to his family, particularly after the twins were born, but the work's got to be done, right?
And the personal/emotional strength it would have taken to keep sailing for Aman after he learned about what had happened at Sirion...that takes an incredible kind of fortitude I think, to understand what was at risk and know that placing his own family first could result in the destruction of the entire continent.
Earendil got to take the lead in the piece I wrote for the last Sindar Week, Carrying the Hope of All the World. I also took a quick peek at his relationship with Turgon here.
I'll also throw in a tag for @swanmaids who may have some Earendil thoughts to share!

Turgon/Elenwe/(Finrod)
Idril/Tuor/Voronwe
Elwing/Eärendil
Luthien/Curufin’s wife 😏
Celebrimbor/Sauron
turgon/elewne - i love them so much, although elenwe being ANOTHER dead wife for the sake of a man's pain is annoying as fuck (fuck you tolkien im clawing at your grave). turgon/finrod does nothing for me honestly i just see their trip as lads on tour lads lads ladsssssss so them as a throuple, again, does nothing for me
idril/tuor/voronwe - voronwe is too traumatised to be stable enough for a couple let alone a throuple 2 me, idril and tuor r the couple that has the mutual bestie that comes with them everywhere tho
elwing/earendil - i didn't care for them much for a long time, mostly beacuse i hate absent fathers and thats what earendil is/was to me. however, you have since converted me into actually caring about them as a couple (rather than just being an elwing lover) so thank you for the corruption!!!
luthien/curufins wife - THANK YOU FOR POSTING EROTIC FANFICTION OF THEM JESUS CHRIST IM STILL FLUSTERED THINKING ABOUT IT. FUCK. YEAH. DAMN OK YEAH. HAHA. FUCK. YUEAH THATS GOOD STUFF
celebrimbor/sauron - canon to me. obsessive corruptive manipulative. bonus points if sauron never actually cares about celebrimbor all along and never even has a hint of remorse. he used him for his skills as a smith and his skills as a great fuck and thats all. meanwhile celebrimbor thought himself in love. slay!!!!!!!!!

Candy Hearts Exchange Letter
Hello dear writer! Thank you so much for writing something for me. Below the cut are some ideas to get you started for the exchange.
Silmarillion:
Celebrimbor/Sauron
My favorite disaster couple. Could be angsty, smutty, humorous, dramatic, romantic, horrific or any combination of the above! Traditional Eregion setting is fine, but so is a less traditional setting if you have an alternate canon or post-canon idea. Torture and dub con is fine so long as they're mutually attracted to each other with a history of genuine friendship, as well as any kinks so long as they’re not on the DNW list.
Celebrimbor/Galadriel/Sauron/Celeborn
Really any 3 from that group would be fantastic! Or all 4, don’t let me stop you. With Celebrimbor/Galadriel/Sauron, how are Galadriel and Sauron trying to one up each other through Celebrimbor (maybe literally)? With Celebrimbor/Galadriel/Celeborn maybe Celebrimbor has made some sex toys for them to try out? or they’re a throuple with very different political goals? With all 4, maybe Sauron thinks he can control Celeborn, but ends up getting screwed over (again, maybe literally!) while Galadriel and Celebrimbor watch (while getting each other off, maybe). Or maybe it's an AU where Sauron has captured all three of them and terrible predicaments ensue, maybe with a side of coercion (though I would like in this situation that all parties are attracted to each other). I would like Celeborn and Galadriel to be in an open marriage and OK with other partners, and absolutely no Celeborn bashing please. Or if you have an idea for Celebrimbor/Sauron/Celeborn or Galadriel/Sauron/Celeborn don’t let me stop you! (unless it’s on my DNW 😇)
Celebrimbor/Finduilas/Turin
They’re all in Nargothrond together, so they should fuck.
Wait, you want more of a prompt? ok. Turin is basically catnip for elves -- elfnip. Celebirmbor and Finduilas both have a giant crush on him and scheme together (or against each other) how to get him. This could result in a threesome or just Celebrimbor/Finduilas having sex, both fantasizing they’re with Turin.
Earendil/Elwing
Could be sexy, could be more adventure focused! Maybe their first time, finding love at the end of the world. Maybe doing it on boat. Maybe their voyage to Valinor with various adventures through the enchanted islands (I’ll be real I’m thinking about Voyage of the Dawn Treader but any adventure would do), maybe them exploring space! I’d love all of it.
Finrod/Turgon
This one could be sexy or more focused on their friendship. They’re both so interesting, getting the alliance of large numbers of Sindarin followers and creating hidden kingdoms -- they both clearly have charisma and then some to spare. One thing I’m not interested in is any bashing of Amarie or Elenwe. Are they swingers in Valinor? Does Turgon drown his sorrow over Elenwe in Finrod? What happens when Turgon hears of Finrod’s death? Is that maybe part of what drives him to join the Union of Maedhros?
Idril/Tuor
For Idril and Tuor, I’m actually most interested in post-Gondolin stories with them. What was the escape and long journey after the fall like? How did Tuor handle finally meeting more Edain in Sirion? Did they both love the sea, or was that a tension between them until they decided to sail? Did they ever want to have more children? (and how does that work between and Elf and a Man where one needs to intend it but the other doesn’t?) so many questions! Going with a more tragic story here than is in the Silm would be fine with me, so long as they love each other and sail trying to reach Valinor to get help for their people.
Melian/Thingol/Other
I love Maia/Elf couples and I love the idea of Melian and Thingol having an open marriage with additional lovers for both of them. The third could be (almost) anyone! Celebrimbor, post fall of Nargothrond escaping to Doriath; Finrod or Galadriel, discovering the mysteries of Melian for the first time; Sauron, trying to sabotage Melian by sleeping with her husband (ends up getting fucked by both of them I think). Anyone else in Doriath like Daeron, Mablung, Oropher, Nellas or an OC could work too! Not Turin, Nienor, Luthien, or Beren though please.
Celeborn/Galadriel
I love Celeborn and Galadriel as two people who love each other very much but are also very independent. For a more serious story, why does Galadriel choose to leave Eregion, but Celeborn stays? On a humorous note, an article exploring their relationship and how their choice to live in different locations (in the second age, third age, fourth age, w/e) a la obnoxious new york times style piece could be very good.
Legolas/Gimli
I really only want one thing with them -- roleplay, preferably Valar roleplay with Gimli as Aule and Legolas as Yavanna: humorous, sacred, profane, sexy. If that doesn’t work for you, but you have an idea related to my more general likes in my sign up, I’ll love that as well!

Honestly, Earendil and Elwing seemed like the most unhappiest couple in Middle Earth and that was before the Feanorians sacked Sirion. What man leaves his wife and young children alone to lead a group of survivors on a trip he knows he won’t come back on?
And then in Valinor, they don’t even stay together. Like at all. Elwing isolates herself and Earendil is never able to spend time with her.
I’ve never seen what happened to them as a victory. It’s incredibly sad, from start to end.

Ooh, could I get 22, 88, and 69 for Earendil and Elwing for the otp asks?
I love them!!! <3
(From this ship ask game)
22. How do their personalities complement each other? I like to think they have a very much partners-in-crime-best-friends dynamic (partially due to being the only half-elves, which is how i think they might’ve first formed a friendship) but they do have a lot of differences that balance each other. Earendil is a sunshine boy, idealist, romantic, optimistic, very friendly. Elwing is more cynical, practical, guarded, quiet, serious. Some of these traits devloped out of coping mechanisms for their trauma, Earendil hides himself behind his jokes and forced lightheartedness. He truly is very hopeful and cheery, but he doesn’t let himself show negative emotion ever, faking optimism. Elwing keeps up her cold, solemn exterior, afraid to let herself hope or find joy. In the Havens they meet, and as they build a friendship they start to heal. She grounds him and reminds him that he doesn’t always have to be the happy one, that its ok for him to be sad or angry or disappointed. He brings hope to her life, the first time in many years, and teaches her to let herself open up and dream and find joy, even with the fear that it might be dashed.
88. How do they comfort each other when they are helpless to do anything about the situation? I imagine that they aren’t a very talkative couple, tending to comfort each other and express affection just with their presence, a squeeze of the hand, a small smile, a gentle hand on their shoulder, a whispered “Remember, I love you.”
69. Do either of them have secrets even the other doesn’t know? Not many at all, I think. The one thing that perhaps one of them doesn’t know in full is that Elwing never told Earendil that she doesn’t know what happened to Elured and Elurin. She rarely mentions them at all and Earendil assumes that they died in the kinslaying, but in truth Elwing has no idea if they’re alive or dead and she wishes terribly that she just knew.

fic writer questions - thanks for the tags, @grey-gazania @curufiin and @thelordofgifs! Sorry that it took so long.
1. How many works do you have on Ao3? 51, though one is a compilation of unrelated short pieces.
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 89,680
3. What fandoms do you write for? At present just Silm and Lotr, but I'm hoping to participate in Yuletide this year and thinking about The Handmaiden, Hustlers, Swan Lake, and The Wolf Den as potential fandoms to offer
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
spirited away (outsider pov legolas/gimli)
post mortem (clinical/epistolary post-second kinslaying)
it takes a village (5+1 SoF and celebrimbor)
the straight road (epistolary legolas/gimli)
the stones wept (orpheus and eurydice au legolas/gimli)
It seems like my most popular pieces are L/G or sons of Feanor. And they ARE fun to write about, so I'm not complaining!
5. Do you respond to comments? Yes. But sometimes it takes an embarrasingly long time. Because I suck.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? haven (everyone dies) sister sister (everyone dies) if our deed faileth (everyone dies) woe unto worlds end (everyone dies)
Sensing a theme.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? coastin' (Elwing gets her pussy ate by her sexy husband and has an orgasm)
8. Do you get hate on fics? Lol I'm not relevant enough for that.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Yes lol. I'm not sure what's meant by "what kind", but I've done F/F, M/M, F/M, F/M/M, M/F/F/F/F and a fairly big variety of kinks so like... most kinds?
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? No, and I'm not a huge reader of them, although I long for a Silm/Succ crossover
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes! The lovely @camille-lachenille translated see it fall, child of war into French. You can read it here.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? No. I write very slowly and erratically, which I don't think would be fair to any potential cowriter.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship? Legolas/Gimli is a long term otp and one couple where I really can't see either side with anyone else (if they want to invite Aragorn or Eomer to join for a night I'm not opposed). Elwing and Earendil is another couple that I feel the same about (and I'm also defensive of them as a couple and genuinely see them as an example of some of Tolkien's most romantic writing). I also really like Celegorm/Orome for being basically perfect for my id.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Eeeh. I'm really trying not to officially throw in the towel on any of my wips. It's just taking me a long time...
16. What are your writing strengths? Can I say smut? I think I'm quite good at setting, food, and clothing descriptions too.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Any plot that's more complicated than "emotion in space" or "dick in hole". Also actually DOING the writing.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I used to do it much more than I currently do. Now I feel like it breaks the flow of the story.
19. First fandom you wrote for? LOTR.
20. Favourite fic you’ve written? I've said it before but I was really pleased with how one of your girls came out and have reread it a couple of times since publishing. Actually I think I got some writers block after publishing it because I feel like I can't surpass it lol.
This was fun to do! I'm very late to the party so I think most people have been tagged, but if anyone else wants to do it then please go ahead and say I tagged you.

I was wondering if you had any headcanons on Húrin and Morwen's first meeting and the early days of their relationship.
-@outofangband
I do!!
They have changed a little over time, but not much. To make a long story short, I tend to think their engagement was arranged by Hareth and Emeldir -- I HC Morwen's mom died before they got to Dor-Lómin -- since politically it made a lot of sense and helped arrange the legal settlement of the Beorian refugees that survived that far. Also, once they're engaged, it's even easier to treat them as closer kin, and the concessions to her house and people don't feel like charity. I think I'm attached to this because Morwen herself is very attached to it -- it's important for her, for example, that Túrin is not going to Doriath to beg refuge, but as kin to the king, or that what Aerin gives her can be passed off and what is rightfully hers, though everyone and their mom knows it's just charity :/ she's very prideful...
I think Morwen is 11 when she arrives there and Húrin not much older?
The issue now is that we don't know when exactly Húrin and Huor were sent to be fostered with their Haladin kin, so the way this works is: either Morwen met, or at least saw the brothers before, during her own people's stop at Brethil, and then in Dor-Lómin was eventually informed that the straw-headed boy was going to be her future husband, or the brothers were still there by the time she arrived, and they met at least once officially as betrothed before he and Huor departed.
Either way, I don't headcanon them as childhood friends like Elwing and Earendil. I like to think they kept regular correspondence; at first practicing letter-writing and maybe even Sindarin with each other, but eventually growing more comfortable and authentic in their exchanges... I also like to imagine they'd send each other gifts of their growing-up exploits: she would send him items embroidered by herself and the like, and he would send her tokens from successful hunts and whatnot :^) Maybe they met in person a couple of times during specific events, but I am growing more and more fond of the idea that they didn't, really, and were mostly penpals hahaha.
The brother's disappearance is a heavy blow to Morwen, I think, because it's another reminder that fortune is ungovernable and your comfort and safety can always just suddenly be taken away from you. Like, she was enamored of Húrin and comfortable with the idea of marrying him, etc, and then, suddenly, misery... I think she just expects them to be dead, though secretly hoping it isn't the case: very much what happens later after the Unnumbered Tears, and why I think it was hard for her to give up hope then, when before Húrin had also disappeared one day, just to suddenly reappear safe and sound some time later...
I have a very clear image in my mind of Húrin and Morwen meeting again and for the first time in a looooong time after his return, and her trying so hard to keep her face schooled and neutral, but just tearing up anyway ;_; her tears break the awkwardness and they start getting closer now that Húrin is back in Dor-Lómin, learning whatever is it Edain lords need to be Edain lords. I like to think that at the feast in celebration of his and Huor's return, Húrin gifted Morwen with a ring or whatever is the official betrothal custom in his house :')
That happens when Morwen is 16; she is 21 when Túrin is born. My HC is that they must have gotten married when Morwen was 19; that's around the time Húrin's dad dies and he becomes the new lord. I think their relationship between Morwen's 16 and 19 grew more and more romantic; I'm positive they were both very attracted to each other, BUT ALSO I imagine the whole thing being very proper! I can't imagine Morwen fooling around tbh, she cares so much about acting her part and about her ladylike dignity 😂 and you just know Húrin is a goddamn gentleman... So I think they exchange a few smooches and lingering touches, but all very tasteful. Tongue and hand-under shirt only after they get married (and btw, that's the complete opposite of how I imagine Huor and Rían's courtship lmaooo I think Rían was already pregnant by the time they tied the knot 😂😂😂)
I think that's pretty much it! I do have other small scenes and headcanons in my head about that time and they change a little, but, for example, I like thinking of Húrin relying a little on Morwen when he comes back, because she has spent all those years in Dor-Lómin close to Hareth, and by now has a better idea of how the land works than he does... I also tend to think of Huor as a little intimidated by Morwen hahaha, though loving her fiercely, as he does!

Oh, brother
Tumblr media
for the request: Galadriel and her brothers
Summary: Galadriel’s surprise birthday bash! Modern AU
Characters: Galadriel x Celeborn, a whole lot of Silmarillion and LOTR elves :D
Word Count: 1.9k
Warnings: none really, family fluff, annoying older brothers. a whole lot of blondes.
If there was one thing Galadriel couldn’t stand, it’s surprises. She likes to know when things happen and have everything planned out. If she had the choice to foresee the future, she totally would.
But Celeborn wasn’t like his wife. And he really couldn’t refuse three ruthless blondes from barging into his home to throw a surprise birthday party for Galadriel, their baby sister. They would’ve broken the door down anyways.
It was a weekday, so of course Galadriel was working. Celeborn had taken the day off to pick up the cake that Galadriel had chosen for herself, and pick Celebrian up earlier than usual from school to help get a few decorations. The decor included a handful of balloons, and some party hats, which were mostly for their daughter than for Galadriel herself.
The door practically shook in its hinges at the sudden knock later that afternoon, making Celeborn jump. If it had been Galadriel, he would have been worried, but she had said she was working late. So who on earth...
“Celebooooooorn!”
“Oh... great.” Celeborn sighed and cursed internally. He set his laptop aside next to where Celebrian was colouring and hurried to the door, bracing himself.
“Is that Uncle Angrod?”
“Sadly.. yes,” Celeborn grumbled. He opened up and nearly fell back at the sight of three grinning faces. They were carrying large plastic bags and a few gift bags, and he immediately regretted opening the door.
They pushed inside, with Celebrian jumping into one of her uncles’ arms without any preamble, and Celeborn had a looming sense of dread about why they had shown up randomly at their home.
Finrod was the eldest, and the more approachable of the three. He explained their plans to set up a surprise party.
“You know she hates surprise parties! The actual birthday dinner is this weekend, you know that!”
“Yes, yes, we know, but we figured we’d do something different this time.”
“Why?!”
“Galadriel works wayyy too much, Celeborn,” Aegnor huffed, flopping down on their couch. His blonde mullet was sleek and straight, and Celeborn caught a section of pure white that shot through one side of his hairdo. Another last-minute dye job, no doubt. “You both work way too much. If you’re not going to do anything about it, then we will.”
“She’ll kill us all.”
“Yeah, that’s fine. Come on, help me with the disco ball.”
“The disco ball?!”
-
Galadriel knew what was going to happen the minute she pulled up to her home. If the half a dozen extra cars in the street didn’t say anything, the flashing lights from the living room window gave enough away. She sat inside her car, genuinely debating if she should speed away and just come back in the morning, leaving Celeborn to deal with the aftermath of what looked like an attempt at some sort of party.
But then she remembered her chosen cake and pursed her lips in defiance. She had been very excited to eat it, and curl up with her own  family to just watch a silly movie the rest of the night. She’d find a way to enjoy her birthday, even with her nagging extended family.
But the first person who greeted her at the door wasn’t her husband or any of her relatives. It was Gandalf, with a butterfly painted on his cheek and a top hat on his head. He had a juice box in hand and pulled her into a hug when he saw her in the hallway.
“Happy birthday, dear friend!”
“Oh, Gandalf. What have you done?”
“For once, this idea wasn’t mine. I was simply invited.”
“I’m sure you arrived on time.”
“I always do!”
He promised there’d be no fireworks this time; when he had set off his pyromaniacal schemes last, poor Radagast’s hedges and flowerbeds had burned to a crisp.
In the kitchen, Celeborn was nursing a wine glass filled with apple juice. Galadriel didn’t see any alcohol opened anywhere, which did help relieve her stress. He saw her come in and his face scrunched up in an apologetic expression, and it made her laugh.
“My love.. I’m so sorry-”
“Don’t start, Celeborn. What’s done is done. I suppose I’ll be forced to enjoy my birthday now?”
He grimaced and sipped his drink a little more. “If it helps, Celebrian is enjoying herself immensely.”
“Oh, is that right?”
“Orodreth is here. I promise everything is family-friendly, even if it is a little... wild.”
“Was the disco ball Aegnor’s idea?”
“Yes.”
“Of course.”
Galadriel’s siblings were all successful, hard-working people. At least, when they were on their own. Once you put the three brothers together, all hell would break loose. Despite their sheer differences, they were able to put things together and become a team. Often to the dismay of their younger sister who had to endure the torture.
Finrod was the eldest, and therefore the most responsible. He was a successful CEO who took his time to travel and explore every corner of the world. He was stern-faced, and defiantly defensive of his family and his life choices.
Angrod was the middle brother, and the most outlandish. His passion could lead to anger very quickly, but it made him the most emotionally expressive. His son was practically the sheer opposite of him. Orodreth was a little older than Celebrian, and very soft-spoken and quiet. He was incredibly gifted and intellectual, but you would never be able to read his face and discern that yourself.
And Aegnor was the unhinged youngest brother. As an artist and creative thinker, he explored one medium of art to the next. Galadriel believed he had a lot of potential, and being the two youngest they bonded and got along very well. But she had no idea where his life would lead him. One week it would be pottery, the other it would become architecture. But he was kind and encouraging, which made him the most favourable to babysit Celebrian out of the three uncles.
But once put together, all precedented rules of their characters went out the window.
Eldalote was in the bathroom giving people painted faces, and Galadriel assumed that was where Gandalf got his colourful butterfly. She knocked on the door and came in on Orodreth getting a big fish painted on his forehead. Her daughter was watching diligently next to her aunt as she painted. She had a large flower and heart on one cheek, and a party hat tied snugly on her head.
The minute she saw her mother she squealed and ran into her arms. Galadriel picked her up swiftly, and suddenly felt she  couldn’t be mad at her brothers anymore. Nor could she be mad about them getting ahead of themselves and starting the party before she got home. It made it easier to blend in rather than have all the focus on her as soon as she had opened the door.
“Hello, sweetheart,” she nuzzled her daughter’s unpainted cheek who began babbling about the party thus far. Orodreth said a shy hello and wished her a happy birthday. Galadriel wondered how her idiot, reckless brother had ended up with such a diligent and sweet son. Nonetheless, she gave him a hug before Celebrian tugged her back to the living room, where the main socializing seemed to be happening.
The three elder brothers were plotting in a huddled group near the disco ball, and as soon as they saw Galadriel, they swarmed her. Aegnor set Celebrian on his hip, and Celeborn rushed to Galadriel’s side, still looking a little forlorn and guilty for letting the party get so rowdy.
“Sister! Happy fucking-”
“Hey! There’s kids.”
“Sorry. Happy freaking birthday, sis. Do you like our party?”
“I hate it.” Galadriel crossed her arms, but her eyes were twinkling. “You know how I hate surprises.”
“Hey, that’s why we’re not giving you a speech, alright? You should thank me.” Aegnor bumped Finrod with his fist. “Fin was planning on drawling on for forever if we hadn’t stopped him.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Finrod rolled his eyes, but he gave Galadriel a quick side hug. “We know you never celebrate yourself, Galadriel. So this is for you. We practically had to tie down your husband to let us decorate.”
“I mean, clearly.” Galadriel looked at the overwhelming amount of  paper decorations and bright balloons. “He’d never allow it to look so hideous if he could help it.”
“You wound me, sister,” Angrod clutched his chest.
“Your cake remains untouched though,” Celeborn pointed out. “That’s the one thing I was able to protect. The rest of the house.. not so much.”
“Oh, well I suppose that’s alright,” Galadriel sighed. She watched the small group of friends and other people in her life gather in the living room and other spots in the house. The music was cheery but not blaring. And from the looks of it.. people brought their own dinner items, like an impromptu potluck.
Elwing and Earendil came over to greet Galadriel with happy smiles and a congratulations. The couple were constantly glued to each others’ side, and Galadriel was glad to have another set of seemingly sane parents in their social circle.
Their twins, Elros and Elrond, were sprawled out on the carpet with Lego and toy cars. Elrond’s face had been smeared with cupcake icing that he had scarfed down, and Galadriel watched, amused, as her daughter went over to him, tutting like she often would. She had a napkin in hand and proceeded to wipe his face, effectively smearing the icing even further onto his cheeks.
The sight made her chuckle, and the initial stress she had seemed to finally leave. She supposed she could enjoy as much of it as possible.
“To be fair, this party is looking to be the best I’ve ever had.” She looked around, slipping her hand into Celeborn’s. “Food I don’t have to pay for. No idiot college friends or condescending relatives. Kids who are actually enjoying themselves? I’d rank this in the top five, boys.”
“Then our work here is done!” Aegnor declared, bouncing Celebrian who giggled happily in his arms. “Now let’s get that cake.”
“Nuh-uh,” Galadriel wagged a finger at him. “That’s for me and my family alone. There’s enough food for you behind you. Go on, you swine.”
Aegnor stuck out his tongue, and she swatted him. He went off to explore the dishes that were laid out on the dining table. So did the rest of the group; going to get their faces painted or wolf down whatever fatty snacks were in reach. Galadriel turned to her husband and gave him a firm kiss.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t defend our fortress, my lady,” he sighed. She rolled her eyes.
“It’s quite alright. I’m not angry. Maybe because I was met with a very gleeful Gandalf at the door rather than my overbearing siblings. Besides, we didn’t even have to cook.”
He laughed. “I knew that would be the thing to win you over.”
A/N: I love these guys ;-; This is my character interpretation of Galadriel’s brothers/family in a modern AU. I posted this out of order for CB’s birthday- I finished it over a week ago but then I realized how close it was to the 14th so I just waited! I hope you enjoy my loves
