there are two possibilities when you find yourself unmoving in the wake of catastrophe: either time has stopped, or you are stuck within it. most likely, it’s both.
However, reason and understanding don't fix these behaviors—they originate in the most primitive self-preserving part of our nervous system, and in order to resolve them, we need to revisit and restructure the drama of the unwanted child. You need to come to a point that you can lovingly and compassionately observe what you had to endure as a child and give the part of yourself the care that was lacking back then. Getting there always is an arduous process. One keeps hoping that other people will love that wounded kid that you yourself can't stand.

I nominated Louis Hofmann, Jannik Schümann or Alex Barone as Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler, Peyton Elizabeth Lee or Anna Cathcart as Jubilation Lee/Jubilee, Tom Hopper, Joonas Suotamo or Dane DiLiegro as Piotr Rasputin/Colossus and Justin Rain or Justin Johnson Cortez as Daniel Lone Eagle/Forge in X-Men for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
If the girl can't breathe enough to even respond during a love confession or a proposal, is that a metaphor for something else? Yes.
For Pirates of the Caribbean context, Elizabeth's corset is tied too tightly. It's a plot device to get her tied up in pirate shenanigans but it's also a metaphor for Elizabeth feeling like she doesn't have a lot of options in life: she can't breathe because she is living a life she's not entirely happy with (she feels a lot more free once she's experiencing adventure and is free from proper society) and because she's being pressured by her father to marry this man because of his high rank. She's just not interested in him, especially as she has a crush on Will Turner.
Is this a serious parallel? Kind of. Is it hilarious? Yes.
Btw, after El beats s5 and finally gets a social security number, I think she should get to pick out her name and that name should be Elizabeth. Like yeah, technically her real name is Jane but like, she obviously doesn’t identify with that name much, plus there’s no way we’re getting rid of El as a nickname. Elizabeth is like half her own new liberated identity, half the name all her loved ones gave her. Plus, if we still wanna honor Terry (which we should), I present to you: Elizabeth Jane Hopper-Byers. Like do you see the vision.
Children create an inner map of who they are in relationship to their surroundings based on their experiences. Abuse and abandonment become hardwired in the brain. A child who is abused, unwanted, neglected or abandoned cannot help but attribute the misery of his or her existence to who he or she fundamentally is.
