Which Is Your Favorite Character In Ashes Of Love?
Tumblr media
It is not often in a drama whereby it is hard for the viewers to hate the villain, what more to actually root for him or her. This situation can be found In Ashes Of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜). In fact, even the secondary characters are a pleasure to watch and I really don’t mind them having more screen time. While I think the drama itself is a bit too draggy (you can read my Ashes Of Love review), the characters are interesting and the stars portray their roles well. The varied characters give life to the story and it will be great to delve a bit further into them.
N.B.: The following contain spoilers! For detailed episode summary, you can go to my Ashes Of Love Drama Recap.
Jin Mi
The main character Jin Mi is played by Yang Zi. She is supposed to be someone who is innocent about love and romance because she had been fed a pill that made her detached from love when she was born. So, Jin Mi is very naive and treats everyone as a friend. She is clueless that her behavior could invite misunderstandings especially when she is friendly, warm, and bubbly by nature. While it is part of the plot that her character is innocent and clueless, I can also understand why some viewers might find her irritating. There is a limit of how much ignorance one can take from a character before it feels overdone.
The good thing is her character becomes more matured as the drama progresses. Jin Mi is smarter and more rational in the Mortal Realm which helps to save the drama for me. Once back in the Heavenly Realm though, we are back to being treated to a Jin Mi who slept with Xu Feng while being engaged to Run Yu. But at the same time, she is a little afraid to break off her engagement. Then, she is again detached from love due to Run Yu’s manipulations.
Overall, Jin Mi is a neutral character to me. I don’t hate her but neither can I totally love either. There is a window of opportunity for her to firmly reject Run Yu but she didn’t do so. Towards the end, I get the feeling that her love for Xu Feng is also mixed up with heavy guilt and hence, a strong urge to atone for her mistakes. It is a bit different from Bai Feng Jiu’s straightforward love for Dong Hua Di Jun in Eternal Love Of Dream.
Xu Feng
Allen Deng Lun portrayed Xu Feng. I have watched a few of his dramas including Blossom In Heart. His most recent appearance that I have come across is a guest role in Skate Into Love. Xu Feng’s character is supposed to be smart but non-ambitious. His privileged background automatically garners him a lot of respect. His mother also paves the way for him by doing all the dirty jobs behind the scenes. It is easy to like Xu Feng because what you see is what you get. He doesn’t have sinister motives or put up any pretenses.
However, my complaint of Xu Feng is his selfishness towards Run Yu when it comes to Jin Mi. He asks his brother to give up Jin Mi when he knows his brother also loves her. Moreover, Jin Mi is engaged to Run Yu. In return, Xu Feng will not fight with him for the throne. It sounds like a barter trade to me. While I understand that Jin Mi doesn’t love Run Yu, I just find Xu Feng’s actions lack respect and empathy for him. But the saving grace is he is upfront about what he wants.
Xu Feng’s character also changes a little while he is in the Demon Realm. For a smart immortal, it is certainly uncharacteristic of him to trust Sui He. He is even planning to marry her! Then, his hatred for Jin Mi is suddenly gone after he hears of her sacrifices to resurrect him during the wedding ceremony. The change is very abrupt and the screenwriters fail to develop their relationship further before the drama rushes on to the war.
I guess I can sum up Xu Feng in one sentence – he is a prince who wants nothing else in life but the girl.
Run Yu
Leo Luo Yun Xi played the character Run Yu in Ashes Of Love. I have watched him in Princess Silver and he shone in that drama as well. Run Yu is a tragic character just like Rong Qi. He suffered immensely as a child. He has to constantly stay out of the limelight to avoid antagonizing the Empress who is Xu Feng’s mother. The interesting aspect about Run Yu is that his character changes in a negative way but viewers could totally understand his plight. You might even sympathize with him! So, Run Yu is a villain that I can’t hate. It is a good thing that he didn’t die in a tragic way in the end.
No doubt Run Yu is manipulative and hideous. I can also add he is obsessed with Jin Mi until he changes to become like the people he hates. I guess he craves for love so badly because his world has always been cold and lonely. If only he can open up his heart for Kuang Lu, he might find the warmth he seeks.
What I like about Run Yu is he remains responsible in the end. He didn’t run away after creating all the mess. Perhaps Xu Feng’s conversation with him enlightens him when he is about to give up. But I like it that he reverts to his old self and knows what he has done wrong. It is a pity that he still feels empty in the end since he can’t have Jin Mi’s love.
Liu Ying
Liu Ying is portrayed by Chen Yu Qi. The last time I watched her is in Heaven Sword And Dragon Sabre 2019 in which she played Zhao Min. In Ashes Of Love, Liu Ying is a princess in the Demon Realm. But her character is upright and cheerful. She speaks her mind and is not afraid of challenges. Liu Ying is very consistent in her principles and demeanor throughout the whole drama. She is one very lovable demon princess.
What I like about her is her courage to love and remain loyal to the people who matters in her life. Her love with Mu Ci is a sad one but she comes out of it with much positivity. There is nothing to dislike about her but then again, Liu Ying is not the central attention of the drama. There is not much opportunity for Liu Ying’s character development unlike the 3 main roles above.
Pu Chi
Liao Jing Feng played the role of Pu Chi or Yan You. I don’t know why but he looks a bit like Yalkun Merxat who starred in Legend Of Yun Xi. Pu Chi is such a cheerful and witty character that it is very easy to fall in love with him. Although he has a personal agenda in the beginning, Pu Chi never crosses the line. He knows his limits and what he shouldn’t do. Despite his joking and carefree ways, he cares about the people he loves deep in his heart. If you want a loyal friend, Pu Chi would make a great one. He is always supportive of Jin Mi and respects her decision.
Another reason why I like Pu Chi is his wisdom to walk away from being corrupted by evil doings around him. He chooses to disassociate himself from Run Yu when he sees that Run Yu is going down the wrong path. He warns Run Yu but when the latter refuses to listen, he simply leaves. Pu Chi saw how his foster mother suffered because of her obsession for revenge. He learned it is better to let go and he follows it through. Pu Chi is a fun and interesting character but hides a lot of wisdom beneath the playful exterior.
Dan Zhu
Dan Zhu is portrayed by Xia Zhi Yuan. He is also known as the Moon Immortal who is in charge of love and marriage of the mortals. I find him unique because they have purposely made him look youthful although he is an uncle to Xu Feng and Run Yu. With his youthful looks, his funny behavior automatically fits in with his character. Dan Zhu is always trying to matchmake his nephews and provides the drama with some comedic element together with his antics with Pu Chi.
Despite his non-serious character, Dan Zhu also knows when to chip in when the situation calls for it such as the trip up Snake Mountain. He is not featured in the last episode, so Dan Zhu just seems to fade away as the drama ends. It is a pity as his comical relationship with Immortal Yuan Ji could have been explored a bit further just like Si Ming and Shi San in Love And Destiny.
Kuang Lu
Bella Du Yu Chen plays the character Kuang Lu. This is a loyal subordinate type of character but with one-sided love thrown in. Kuang Lu stands by Run Yu through thick and thin. She is adamant on being by his side and quietly support him although she knows he is someone she will never have. She loves Run Yu. But Run Yu only has Jin Mi in his heart.
Kuang Lu will always feel conflicted. On one hand, she wants Run Yu to be happy and win over Jin Mi. But on the other, that happiness will cause her to be miserable too. While I admire her loyalty, she is also throwing away her future by staying close to someone who would never love her in the way she hoped for. Her plight a bit sad to me because she does have a good heart and deserves better. But I guess she should be contented in the end as she becomes Run Yu’s only confidante.
My Favorite Character
If I were to choose, I would say I like Run Yu the best out of all the characters in Ashes Of Love. There is a lot of depth to the character. I like him when he was kind and gentle. I can also understand when he turns bad. The background of Run Yu is very well explained which is why he is a villain I can be sympathetic towards. It is very different from the other villain in the drama which is Sui He who is very one-dimensional and predictable. The fact that Run Yu eventually ends up repentant and responsible but lonely as the Emperor also melts the heart.
It is not often that one could love the villain. Do you feel the same? If not, which is your favorite Ashes Of Love character then? 🥰

The family of three deities had bid adieu to their relatives in Quingqui and taken the magical boat to Bihai Cangling. Dijun and Fengjiu had both managed to handle their respective duties and arranged for messengers to visit them here at their new place of residence, actually their real home, for the next few months. They were all very excited about it.
Fengjiu was remembering their last visit fondly. The last time she had been here, she had spent some magical time with Dijun.
Dijun was also remembering his last visit. But there wasn’t any fondness in those memories for him. He had been there was to build the Star Light ward. He had not expected to come back alive to this place, much less to come back alive with his wife and son. He looked at Xiaobai and marveled at her. It had been her who had saved him and saved his home. She was the best. He lovingly played with her hair.
Gungun saw that they were about to reach to a beautiful landscape, the likes of which he had never seen. “Father, your home is so beautiful. It’s even better than the Sky Kingdom!”, he exclaimed clapping excitedly.
“Gungun’s reaction to Bihai Cangling is just like yours when you came here for the first time.”, said Dijun smilingly to Xiaobai. "It's your home too, Gungun. It’s our home.", he added. He liked the sound of that very much.
Xiaobai noticed that a lot had changed since she had last visited. Row of fruit trees and vines had been planted - grapefruits, pears and grapes. There was a long corridor with an artificial hill. The hill really looked like a real rocky mountain, just smaller than a mountain. On either side of the corridor there were beautiful trees of foiling flowers. Spiritual birds danced to ‘paying homage to the Phoenix’ near by.
Then there was a pavilion overlooking a lotus pond. White and pink lotuses swayed gracefully in a cool breeze there. White sandalwood on each side of the pavilion gave the seating area a perfect cover from sun.
Xiaobai recalled her own words from the last time she had visited. Dijun had done everything she had asked for. She was transfixed.
When they walked a little further, her jaw dropped to the floor. Sitting atop a slightly raised platform was a house. Not just any house - the bamboo house she had drawn! Oh, Dijun!!!! She stood dumbfounded with tears in her eyes.
Dijun realized she had stopped walking and turned around. When he saw her face he asked with worry, “What’s wrong? Did I mess it up?” Forgetting about Gungun watching them, she ran forward and hugged him. She buried herself in his arms and said, “No, Dijun. No mess up. This is perfect. You made our home. Our home!” She choked on her emotions and couldn’t say anything else. Dijun smiled and planted a kiss on her head.
Gungun was watching all this and came running. “Mother and Father are kissing again. I want a kiss too.”, he giggled. Dijun picked him up and twirled him high. His giggles and Dijun’s laughter filled the space. And Xiaobai’s heart. They were home.
When they went inside, Xiaobai realized that all the basic things they had planned for, had been done. There was a study, a living room and a well-lit, well ventilated kitchen. The large kitchen window overlooked the fruit trees. There were two identical rooms - one for Gungun and another for his little brother/ sister, as Dijun explained, his eyes hinting mischievously. It made Gungun very excited to think that he would have a playmate. Then there were a couple guest rooms. Dijun and Xiaobai’s  room was a spacious suite with a large bed. A foiling flower tree was the headboard of that bed. They even had a nice little hot spring next to their room.
“Dijun, the house is great, but there’s still work to do. We have to set up the kitchen, the wardrobes and such.”, began Xiaobai. “If I do everything, what will you do?”, he interrupted her, pretending to be arrogant and tapped her forehead. Then he leaned in and whispered in her ears “But I have already done so much work here. You owe me big this time.  I will collect my dues from you at night.” Seeing her cheeks instantly color up pleased him.
There was a balcony behind their room. It overlooked a large playground with targets set up for practicing archery, an open space for sword plays and martial arts. On one side was another building. “That is a workshop where we can forge weapons. I have also placed all the weapons I have made or collected in a room in there. I am sure you will like it.”, said Dijun. She looked at him with pride in her eyes. Dijun felt that all his efforts had been completely worth it.
“I am so hungry, mother. When can we eat?”, asked Gungun. “You and Father can put your things in your rooms. I will quickly get food ready.”, said Xiaobai patting him. They all went their separate directions and got busy.
After some time they all got together in the dining room and ate a simple but delicious meal. Fengjiu had found that right next to the kitchen was a vegetable and herb garden. She had picked some fresh veggies to prepare rice porridge and mushrooms-vegetables stir fry. Some lentil cakes rounded up the meal. She had always been good in cooking. Her years in mortal realm had helped her perfect  the art of making do with whatever was available.
After they cleared up all the food, Fengjiu wanted to go to her room and take a nap. But Dijun insisted they go to the lotus pond and catch some fish. She almost suspected that he wanted to keep her away from their bedroom. “May be he has made a mess in there with all the stuff. I better not go in there or else I will end up cleaning everything myself.”, she thought to herself as she followed her guys to the pond. When they got there, she rested her head in Dijun’s lap and dozed off happily.
She woke up a little while later when tiny hands were trying to tap on her head. "Mom, wake up! Look I caught a fish!! My first ever fish!!!", Gungun was showing off with eyes wide with excitement. She couldn't help by smile at him. "I will make sweet and sour fish for dinner tonight with this. You both like it, don't you?" She said. Two heads full of silver hair nodded in fervent agreement. "Like father - like son", she chuckled.
She completely lost herself in cooking dinner. In addition to sweet and sour fish, she also made sticky rice and soup. "For Dijun and Gungun. They need this nourishment.", she told herself. All this was gobbled up pretty quickly between the three of them.
After dinner they took off for a long walk that led them back to the weapon forge. Dijun took them in and Fengjiu was like a kid in the candy store. She enjoyed designing and creating mechanical weapons. Among other things, this was something she and Dijun had in common. Gungun was quite curious and looked around with amazement. But he was slowly beginning to get tired and needed to get to bed. So they all returned homewards.
"You take him to his room and get him ready for bed. I will bring him a glass of milk. He will sleep well with that.", said Dijun. Fengjiu nodded and walked away holding Gungun's little hand. In his room, she helped him bathe and change. They both were happy they didn't need to dye his hair anymore. As she was settling him in his bed, Dijun came in with a glass on milk in his hand. He made sure Gungun finished it up. Then they both dimmed the candles, kissed Gungun sweet dreams and left the room.
When they reached the doorstep of their bedroom, Dijun gestured Fengjiu to stop. "What's wrong?", asked Fengjiu puzzled. "Close your eyes.", ordered Dijun. "Why should I?", replied Fengjiu more puzzled. "Please, Xiaobai. Do as you are told.", Dijun coaxed her. So she sighed and closed her eyes. "You are acting very weird tonight.", she said.
She found herself being lifted in his arms. She felt the door opening and he walking in with her.
"Can I open my eyes now?" Feng Jiu asked. "Not yet, just a little bit longer.", Dijun replied. She could feel the smile in his voice.
"What's going on? I am opening my eyes now." She nagged him anxiously as she felt herself being lowered on something extremely soft.
"Wait. Just a few more moments.", Dijun replied as he adjusted her clothes. "Okay, you can open your eyes now.", he said.
She was so not ready for what she was seeing. The room had been transformed. It looked like a bride's chamber on a wedding night. There was an altar placed for heaven worship ceremony. Gold, white and purple lanterns adorned the ceiling. Matching candles, flower arrangements and curtains hung everywhere. Every seat in the room and the whole bed was covered in foiling flower petals. She was draped in her wedding gown. And then as she turned towards Dijun she saw that he himself was looking extremely handsome in his wedding attire. Nothing in the room was nearly as mesmerizing as the sight of the regal man himself. He took her breath away and she could not help but stare at him open mouthed.
"I never gave you a proper wedding. I have regretted that very much.", he said huskily as he walked towards her with a purple veil. "Tonight, let's get married, Xiaobai.", he said softly as he came close and arranged the veil over her hair. She didn't know what to say or do. She was completely under his spell.
He led her by her hand towards the altar. They kowtowed to the heaven and earth. They remembered her parents and kowtowed for them. Then they bowed to each other. Very carefully he lifted her veil and took her hands in his.
"In all three eternities you are the only one who has moved my heart, Xiaobai. You, little fox, will always belong to me.", he looked deeply into her eyes and promised possessively.
She smiled with stars in her eyes and promised him back, "In any eternity I will bring you in my life. Because I love you the most Dijun, you will always belong to me."
He leaned in and planted kisses on her face. He kissed her hair, her forehead, her eyes, her nose and then covered her lips with his. He felt her respond to him and deepened the kiss. She trembled and moved closer in his arms. Slowly he moved to her ear. "Ever since I have had this dress made for you, I have imagined so many ways I would like to undress you from it.", he teased huskily. "Um? So you got this elaborate and extravagant dress made only so that you could undress me from it?", she asked pulling back and squinting her eyes at him. "HHmm.. ", he pursed his lips and nodded solemnly. "You are so... ", she started to say, but completely lost her train of thought under his hot, hungry gaze. He claimed her lips again and started undressing her.

First sight
What if Dong Hua noticed Feng Jiu when she was a maid? Did I write this before? THIS IS A ROUGH DRAFT!
Ok...to be fair, the dude has seen countless beauties, I doubt he would be impressed by Feng Jiu. So he wouldn’t be dazzled by her beauty.
Rather, he would be interested in her culinary skills.
Notice how he remembered her name when he asked for someone to feed his fox?
Anyway, before Dong Hua leaves to duel Xiao Yan, he decides to try out Feng Jiu’s cooking by ordering her to prepare lunch alone.
Like hell Zhihe won’t sabotage her. Good thing Chonglin shoos her away.
So Zhihe’s maid works magic trickery in her stead.
But this is the princess of Qingqiu. She can so use her own magic to undo the damages.
At the meal, Dong Hua is suitably impressed with Feng Jiu’s cooking and asks her to teach his chefs.
To be fair, Feng Jiu’s cooking really is a work of art to be able to outdo the royal chefs of an emperor.
Feng Jiu is busy in the kitchen so she doesn’t see Dong Hua going off to battle.
When he comes back, his cultivation half gone, Feng Jiu is understandably worried. But she is a servant and has to remember her place.
That doesn’t stop her from sneaking a jar of cotton rose ointment to Dong Hua under guise as floral sauce to accompany his lunch.
Dong Hua thankfully is smart enough to recognize it as medicine and not food.
Feng Jiu hopes to have more interaction with Dong Hua but she just cooks for him....
Then the wedding came and Feng Jiu was heartbroken. She chooses to resign.
When they meet again at Bai Qian’s wedding, Dong Hua vaguely recognizes her.
Story follows as canon, only when Lian Song tells Dong Hua about Qingti, Dong Hua doesn’t have a headache for neglecting a beloved pet in mortal danger.

@mcheang said   :    First off, I wouldn’t say Jiheng was abandoned by the demon clan so much as she abandoned them when she left them to pick up the pieces of the botched wedding. She knew she would be exiled and chose to run away anyway. Second, it was never really stated that Dong Hua would stop visiting her after he was married. He would still have to check on the poisoned daughter of his trusted general and make sure she survived.
The admins always think of a few quotes to go in each essay as textual evidence, and admittedly with these next few quotes the previous essay would’ve likely been more complete - we just don’t want to overload our audience with paragraphs and paragraphs of text. So, let’s consider this the Ji Heng Essay, Pt. 2, feat. some Interesting Narrative Foils / Parallels, because I think we don’t actively recognize how similar Ji Heng can be to our leads, and I think sometimes we have to directly look at that and to look within ourselves to figure out why we let our favorite characters off, but we go hard on Ji Heng forever. You’ll have to bear with me - this carries a lot of extra analysis of the text per point addressed, but I believe a somewhat more thorough exploration is required.
TW SUICIDE MENTION, TW DUB CON MENTION, TW GASLIGHTING, for mention of certain canon events, proceed with caution
TO THE FIRST POINT, we have to address, in further detail, what happened after Ji Heng ran away from the wedding. When Xiao Yan tells Feng Jiu about the story Ji Heng told him of what’s happened since they went their separate ways, he does say that she stayed away from the demon clan of her own accord:
Feng Jiu massaged her shoulder, and looked a touch confused: "What does that have to do with Princess JI Heng?"
Xiao Yan was even more confused. "Did I never tell you, that when Ji Heng ran away with that little guard Minsu, they eloped to Fanyin Valley?" He scratched his scalp, the face as beautiful as autumn flowers under the moon touched with a tint of red: "Actually, I only found out half a year ago. All this time, Ji Heng's true love Minsu was a girl who was dressed as a man, and she liked her brother. After she figured that out, Ji Heng couldn't deal with the shock and fought with Minsu, and they separated, but she felt that she was too embarrassed to return to the demon clan, and so she stayed in Fanyin Valley to be the court musician."
However - later, at the end of the book when Chonglin goes to ask the Red Demon Clan about Ji Heng and where she is, he gets this answer:
When Chonglin went to meet with the Red Demon Clan, Lord Xuyang said that after the incident three hundred years ago when his sister ran away with Minsu, the Red Demon Clan had already banished her, and Ji Heng had no contact with the Red Demon Clan since then. Their clan could not tell where she was now.
If anything, then, I think it would be considered a mutual abandonment. For, drastically different reasons, I might add. Ji Heng’s reasons for staying away from home appear to be pride - that she ran away with someone who ended up not being in love with her, who ended up to be lying to her this whole time. That she’s become “pitiful,” because she didn’t follow through on the marriage her brother arranged for her even if she didn’t want it, and now she’s unhappy. Put yourself in her shoes for a minute - and because Admin Ro is both Asian the queen of analogies, imagine that you’ve decided against everyone’s wishes in your family that you were going to be an actor. They all told you you’re going to starve, and, what do you know, they were right. You are in fact out of work and poor. Would you go home, to a chorus of I-told-you-so? To a chorus of people more pleased that they’re right about you than they are willing to support your dream and what you want to do with your life?
Along that vein, her brother’s motivations for banishing her are likely more political. He arranged Ji Heng’s marriage to Donghua because he wanted the political ties to Heavenly Realm. And, in the aftermath of the elopement, in all likelihood he’s trying to disown Ji Heng as fast as possible to avoid it being a reflection on him / his clan, so they don’t get into trouble with either Donghua Dijun (who, by all means should’ve been humiliated by this turn of events) or Jiu Chong Heaven. He does not support his sister’s decision, and in fact, does not want to even be seen supporting his sister’s decision.
Now, food for thought, okay - take a moment and compare that to Feng Jiu, who’s had a very similar narrative. When Feng Jiu goes after someone she loves, going so far as to become a maid, pretend to be a fox, and, basically lose all face for Qingqiu, and he turns out not to have loved her and he turns out to hurt her, what happens? She goes home, to friends and family that do love her. That do support her and have shown support for her, all this time. She has a family who’s waiting for her to go home, who’ll be shields for her, as Zhe Yan says, who she trusts because they’ve always been there for her, over political obligation sometimes. The Bai Family “help their family, not the one that’s in the right.” And let’s take a look at what happens when Feng Jiu runs away from a wedding okay - she blows Cang Yi’s whole palace apart, and yes, she gets punished for this but it’s no more drastic than, likely, being locked in the cave or being spanked. Her family doesn’t disown her because she lost face or because she made a political blunder.
The fact that fandom in general holds these two women to very different standards in this very similar event despite them both being just women who’re trying to run away from a political marriage they don’t want - is concerning. But that fact notwithstanding - from just these two different environments, it’s not hard to see why, in the face of certain decisions, Ji Heng and Feng Jiu make different choices. Now, as a person, I firmly believe no matter what your situation is you make your own choices. So, it’s still on them, as to what choices they make when faced with yet again, a similar situation: not being loved by the person they love. But, with any amount of compassion, you can see, very clearly, why it’s more likely and easier for Ji Heng to make the bad choice. She hasn’t had a particularly large amount of strong relationships in her past, familial or otherwise, that shows her what a good, healthy, strong relationship is like. There is no reference point.
One might argue that Donghua’s just the same, since he has had no real parents and he isn’t close to his foster family. Well, that’s just it - out of this void, where his close relationships are supposed to be, Donghua doesn’t do any better either. In fact, he screws up just as much. Now, I can’t weigh “threatening to kill yourself unless your crush divorces his wife” and “lying to your crush and changing their memories so that they forget everything bad you’ve ever done and sleeping with her using a whole different identity” against each other on a scale of, which is worse. Because they’re both bad, and it’s both toxic in a relationship - but, it seems as though the fandom in general judges them differently as well.
With Donghua, we seem to be more capable of admitting that the things he does are mistakes. We seem to be more capable of saying “it’s because he doesn’t know what he’s doing, it’s because he hasn’t had any experience, it’s because of xyz.” We seem to be capable of understanding that his flaws are flaws, but that Donghua is not a fundamentally evil character and these flaws don’t fundamentally define who he is. We seem to be capable of liking him and forgiving him for his flaws overall. Whereas, with Ji Heng, the general trend I and Admin Lins have seen is to dislike her, even though these two characters screw up the same amount, and, I mean, for similar reasons and to a similar scale.
And while I’m not saying people can’t dislike the characters they dislike - I think we have to to evaluate ourselves and ask ourselves the question - why is it that we are capable of forgiving Donghua for what he does, but we aren’t capable of forgiving Ji Heng? Why is it that we would rather assume that Donghua is a good person and that he isn’t making these decisions because he is bad, but we aren’t capable of the same assumptions for Ji Heng?
One of Donghua’s major flaws is carelessness - and that lead us TO THE SECOND POINT. When Donghua leaves the valley with Feng Jiu, Ji Heng catches up and asks to be taken with them. His response implies that Ji Heng’s condition was not really a concern to him at that moment:
A flash of surprise entered Ji Heng's eyes, but her gaze was full of hope as it directed toward Dijun. Donghua said coolly: "Living in Fanyin Valley will control the Quishui poison. If you live here for three thousand years, the poison will fade away by itself."
And also gives a response that leaves even Feng Jiu saying he’s cold:
Donghua suddenly said: "Your father asked me to take care of you before he feathered...but, I have never liked to care for someone who has designs on me."
Ji Heng's face was suddenly pale, and after a long while, she said sadly: "Yes, I understand."
At the edge of the lake, Feng Jiu stared at the surface of it. Dijun wet a handkerchief and gave it to her. Feng Jiu took it and pressed it to her face for a while, and waited for the cold to sink into her skin, and finally woke up entirely to say: "Thank goodness when I was maid at your palace, you didn't have the chance to know me. If you met me then, you would've said to me what you said to Ji Heng today, right?" And said, tentatively, "You were a little cold, when you said that."
Now, I can’t tell you for sure whether or not Donghua meant exactly to make good on it - but the implications are all there. Telling her the poison is no longer a concern and she should just stay in the Valley while he presumably leaves,  and when he talks about her father, doesn’t that sound like a threat? It certainly probably would have, to Ji Heng: “I know you like me, now stop, or I’ll never come back.” That’s what that sounds like. Now, both admins on this blog have anxiety, and, if you look at Ji Heng and how she was literally ready to kill herself at the end of the book, it’s not hard to conjecture that she probably has some mental illness. Piecing that together with what we previously discussed, it’s not hard to infer that she likely has some anxiety surrounding abandonment.
In her mind, that might very well translate to a straightforward, he’s leaving and never coming back. One might say “why doesn’t she just stop liking him then” but that’s an unreasonable thing to expect...honestly, no one can just turn their emotions off like that, we know this, right? We can’t expect that of a person, so we can’t expect that of a character or that character would no longer be authentically human. Furthermore, if you look at the actions Donghua took in the Valley before he and Feng Jiu ever got together, I think you can see where Ji Heng’s mind might take that even more drastically. The second Feng Jiu showed up in the Valley and this coincided with Donghua’s visit, what does Donghua do? He makes her cook for him, he goes to live with her, he straight up puts up a ward to block them both from the rest of the world. He basically declares to the whole world that, “the only thing I care about here is Feng Jiu.”
Bear in mind, he visits Ji Heng every ten years and is the only thing close to a friend she has in the Valley before Xiao Yan shows up. Ji Heng has been cooking for and living with Donghua every ten year interval he has shown up. To be suddenly and quite completely shut out and removed by this person she thought was her friend, that she had feelings for, even if they were only on her part as far as she knew, is hurtful. It’s like Donghua is saying “I like Feng Jiu, and so I don’t care about you or what you do anymore.”
Now, that’s not Feng Jiu’s fault, and it’s not Donghua’s fault. He’s free to do that, of course, and people change and they outgrow each other and they leave. But - to a person who’s been left by a lot of people, doesn’t it make sense for Ji Heng to react drastically? Doesn’t it make sense for her to see that Donghua is getting married to Feng Jiu and further extrapolate from his previous actions that he’s unlikely to visit again? Think of it if it happened to you - if your best / only friend, one that you care about a lot and are extremely invested in, left you because they found a new friend, can you truly say that you wouldn’t harbor a single bitter thought for that new friend? Can you say in those circumstances, every time, you would make the right choice?
IN CONCLUSION, all this, and the previous essay, is not to say that what Ji Heng does throughout the narrative isn’t bad. It is bad, and it is messy, and it does hurt people. These are explanations and not excuses for her behavior. I and Admin Lins will both agree that of the two of us, I am definitely the harder one on Ji Heng. I get my little bursts of rage when I get to certain areas in the novel that, yes, I can’t soothe over even knowing everything that I know. However, I do think - that a part of evaluating reads and the flaws of each character is trying to understand them. I think I have enough faith in Tang Qi that I believe she wouldn’t put a flat antagonist character in a novel to be “evil” for evil’s sake - and therefore, when I go through my read and I see the hints of dimension, I can say, I see it and it’s there.
In the end, sure, it’s about what everyone wants to believe. You can see that evidence and interpret it however you want. That’s how art and subjectivity and reads work - no one read is completely right.  No one read is completely objective. If someone looked at all of this and thought “nah, bull, Ji Heng did all of it because she’s just an awful person,” I guess there’s nothing to stop them. But in literature,  where every character is a reflection of a living, breathing, relatable person, the admins on this blog are more inclined toward a middle read. That not everyone is completely good and that not everyone is completely bad. That people make bad decisions because of their pasts, because of their circumstances, because of their mental illnesses, but that it does not make them, over all, a bad person forever.
I think if I can extend my compassion to Donghua and Feng Jiu, who have screwed up all over the place throughout this novel, and say, “I understand why you did this, you’re stupid, but I love you anyway” then I can extend that very same compassion to Ji Heng. And I think, if I can say “It’s ok, give them time, they can do better” about the main characters, then Ji Heng also deserves that very same hope. People are flawed. People make mistakes. People can regret it and get better.

Eternal Love of Dream - Episode 7
Tumblr media
I was way too busy to watch the new episode as it came and... I didn’t really feel in a hurry to know what is going to happen. Actually, I barely remember what happened in the last episode? Was it that Siming was taking Fengjiu back to Qingqiu after she hurt Ji Heng? Anyways, I am still giving a chance to this drama. Because the opening track is just so nice to listen to.
So while Fengjiu is sadly baking sweet potatoes in the palace’s kitchen, Siming tells everything or almost I guess to Cheng Yu. She’s really mad that Fengjiu was treated that way and wants to make Dong Hua pay for it, however Siming convinces her not to, it’s just that Fengjiu and Dong Hua are not meant to be, no matter how much they can try to help and force it. He asked the god in charge of gods’ fate. The only way they can help Fengjiu is by getting back her fur from the demon lord.
Fengjiu is depressed and sad because she’s leaving. She made the sweet potatoes for Dong Hua and wonders if by eating them he will be reminded of her. But at least, she gives up on chasing him. I hope she means it.
Dong Hua finds the sweet potatoes and takes them away after watching them for a while.
Cheng Yu wakes up in Lian Song’s room: she got drunk the night before. Third prince wants her to come to the banquet with her, but she refuses because she wants to get back the fur for Feng Jiu. So her, Siming and Zhe Yan go confront the demon lord to get it back. Is that demon lord really bad ass? They have to be the three of them to defeat him.
Back at Qing Qiu, Bai  Zhi is really worried about his granddaughter and scolds Bai Zhen for not caring so much about her whereabouts. He thinks they should find a good husband for her and that Bai Yi, Fengjiu’s father, should discipline her when he comes back from we don’t know where.
They get the fur and Siming sends Fengjiu back to the Peach blossom forest. He entrusts her in the care of Jingwei. She’s in a pitiful state. Zhe Yan offers to blow off the roof of Dong Hua’s palace, but Fengjiu says it’s fine and there’s no need. He just doesn’t like her back and thinks of her only as a disobedient pet. Zhe Yan heals her and give her back her normal appearance to make sur her family doesn’t get worried and doesn’t try to go and confront Dong Hua for what happened.
Nie Chuyin gets to the secret place of the Mo people and summons the Queen of demons. He tells her he wants to serve her and break the seal that locks her. She informs him that he must get the soul locking jade to free her and that it will probably throw the world in total chaos. He doesn’t care because it’s always better than being oppressed by the gods.
Dong Hua’s bride is coming her way and right as she get out of the sedan chair, someone wearing dark clothes come to abduct her. But that person is caught easily and realizes that under the veil, it was Zhihe and not Jiheng. That person is actually Yan Chiwu, coming for his beloved one.
So basically, what happened is that Zhihe surprised Jiheng meeting with Min Su. So Jiheng begs Zhihe to her leave the next quietly, so there won’t be any wedding in the end and this will not hurt Dong Hua’s... how could I say... reputation? Prestige? Whatever, point is that Dong Hua is still untouched by this. Given the opportunity, Zhihe just decides to got in her stead once Jiheng is gone.
So both the Heavens and the Demons are really unhappy about this and nobody knows what happened there. Yan Chiwu is mad at Xu Yang for not fighting for his sister. Xu Yang is mad that he brought danger to the demon clan. The Celestial Emperor is mad too. Dong Hua is mad. Then a demon dude informs Xu Yang that Min Su is also missing.
Seems like Dong Hua actually helped Jiheng to escape. Min Su tries to tell her something, but she says there is no hurry, they can talk later.
So far, I am just hoping for some development in the story. I feel like there’s no plot at all, compared to other dramas, the love story itself isn’t interesting enough (in my eyes) to be worth watching. But I am still hoping, maybe when we get to the dream part it will become more interesting, I don’t know. I have really mitigated feelings about this drama and have more interest for the side stories than the main cast’s stories. And I want to see Yang Mi again as Bai Qian! Can I hope?

I have started (and am loving!) Ten Miles to Peach Blossom Island aka Eternal Love aka To the Sky Kingdom aka Three Lives, Three Worlds and - I love Dong Hua and  Bai Feng Jiu . So, image how happy I was to learn that they have a series coming in 2019! I do have some questions, that I’m hoping fans can help me with:
I read the summary on Wikipedia for  Three Lives, Three Worlds, The Pillow Book - and I’m a little confused. It talks about them first meeting at a wedding. It’s like they have a different history. (I’ve only seen the tv show, so maybe they have a different story in the novel?)
Speaking of it, is their relationship different in the novel? Do they have a lot of “screen time” in it?
I have watched their whole story (it’s all online and subbed) and. . .they get the worst ending! I’m so annoyed they went that way. I need other fans! Someone find me and chat with me about Dong Hua and Fengjiu!

Chapter 22
“Ye Hua” - I rolled over to hug him but it was just emptiness beside me. It’s weird. He never left bed without telling me where he’s going.
“Ye Hua” - I got up and called him again. He was by his changing rack, his back facing towards me. His long silky hair was untied. It’s been a long time since I saw that. I smiled.
He turned over and returned my smile. “What are you smiling at?” - he asked, walking back to bed and caress my face lovingly. “What are you smiling at?” - he asked again.
“Many others would mistake you for my Shifu but I never did” - I said, leaning on his shoulder. “Expect for the first time I met you at the Eastern Sea. You gave me a bit of a shock. You know.. you are actually very different from Shifu”
“Really?”
“Shifu’s eyes aren’t as dark as yours” - I said to him, looking into his eyes. “They are not as calm as yours”
He grinned.
“Tell me. You’re considered quite young among the gods. Why would you behave so much like an elderly god? Even more worst then Dong Hua Dijun?”
He grinned widely.
“You can keep looking for a while longer” - he said, rubbing my shoulder. If you are tired, you can nap in my arms”
“The sun has rise..”
“Are you going to get up or sleep for a while longer?”
“I’m a little thirsty. Get someone to make tea?”
“Sure. I’ll get A-Li here to have breakfast with us too”
Breakfast was a simple affair. A-Li gulped down his porridge and had second helping. Ye Hua fussed that he’s eating too much, while I was siding our son saying that he’s a growing child. A-Li was the happiest of all.
“Come A-Li. Let’s read something while your Father goes through his morning reports” - I suggested after breakfast.
“Sure! Can we read a mortal story?” - A-Li asked.
“Of course, my dear”
Ye Hua smiled and settle himself at his table. I gesture the maid to pour him a cup of tea. Not long after, we heard footsteps. Consort Le Xu and Su Jin walked in.
“Your Highness” - the maids greeted her.
“You may all get up”
A-Li went forward to greet her. “Greetings, Grandmother”
“Quickly get up” - she helped A-Li to stand.
“Greetings to Crown Prince and High Goddess” - Su Jin greeted us with an icy cold tone voice.
Consort Le Xu came forward to me.
“High Goddess Bai Qian. According to the rites, I should bow to greet a high goddess. However, as you’re marrying my son the formalities greetings between us can be overlooked” - she suggested.
Uhuh. Bad idea. You going make me look bad again? I was humiliated once and I don’t want to make it twice.
“Er.. I will go with Ye Hua’s order of seniority in the family. Bai Qian greets Consort Le Xu” - I greeted her instead.
“Then I’ll accept the greeting from my future daughter in law”
“Thank Y..” - I did not get to finish my words. Su Jin suddenly yelled.
“Your Highness!” - she called out to Ye Hua and guided Consort Le Xu to him.
“Ye Hua, you’re always so busy with work. Your tea has gone cold before you have the time to drink it. Why don’t I get you a new cup of tea?” - his mother asked him.
Something must be up for the both of them to come here at the same time. What is this Su Jin up to now?
“There’s no need to go to such trouble” - Ye Hua told her. “This tea is at my preferred temperature” - he emptied the cup.
“Eh, you can’t drink that tea!” - his mother protested.
Why can’t he drink that tea?
Ye Hua looked at both of them curiously. “What is wrong with this cup of tea?” - he asked.
Consort Le Xu hesitate before replying. “I’m just worried that you’ll feel unwell from drinking cold tea. You’ve recently recovered from a severe illness. What if you get sick again after having cold tea?”
“Mother, don’t worry. Qian Qian made me this tea. She added in the nourishing elixir from High God Zhe Yan. It’s used for improving one’s health”
Yikes. There he goes again. There is nothing I can hide from him.
“High Goddess is very thoughtful” - Consort Le Xu turned to me. Su Jin was so upset that her face showed it all.
I knew this had something to do with you. Or else Consort Le Xu wouldn’t be here.
I quickly approached Consort Le Xu. “Your Highness do not need to be so polite. After all, Ye Hua is my future husband. I also hope that he can fully recover soon”
Ye Hua grinned from his mother’s back.
“Speaking of which, that reminds me of your wedding. High Goddess has been to the Nine Heavens twice already”
How did she know? I exchanged looks with Ye Hua.
“Now that you don’t seem to be leaving any time soon, why don’t we move the wedding date forward and have it done soon? What do you think, High Goddess?” - she asked.
I somehow thought Su Jin will have a heart attack there and then. She looks like she’s going to have one.
“Although I’m Qing Qiu’s Queen but my parents are still alive. I will have to ask them about my marriage”
“Good. I’ll speak to the Heavenly Lord to prepare for the wedding in advance. After all, the marriage between the Celestial Tribe and Qing Qiu’s Fox Tribe is an important occasion that is not to be taken lightly”
I just had to bow my head. Elders has to be respected.
She turned to Ye Hua. “Ye Hua, why are you keeping so quiet?”
“As Mother said, this is indeed an important occasion. The Heavenly Lord will have to discuss it with the Fox King. It cannot be rushed”
“It’s good that you’re aware of it. Then I won’t keep the Crown Prince from handling official affairs. I’ll take my leave”
They left with Ye Hua glaring after them. I told A-Li to keep reading and went to sit beside Ye Hua.
“How did you know that I added the nourishing elixir to your tea?” - I was curious to know.
He laughed. “Even my mother knew that there was something fishy with the tea. If I didn’t, wouldn’t that makes me seem incompetent?”
Ye Hua pulled me for a hug. “If there is just one person I can trust here in Nine Heavens, there is no doubt it would be my wife”
“Hmm. By the way, what are you going to prepare for our wedding?”
“It’s an important occasion. We must discuss it carefully. Once the Heavenly Lord has some time, I’ll discuss with him and suggest the wedding date that you picked”
“Alright. Ye Hua, I’m going back to Qing Qiu for a while to settle some things. I’ll come back later. Is it okay?”
He gave me a quick kiss. “Sure. Come back soon. We will be waiting for you”
*****
Luck was on my side as 2nd and 4th Brother was in Qing Qiu when I went back.
“Auntie, are you really going to marry the Crown Prince?” - Feng Jiu asked.
“I have to marry him sooner or later. There is no harm in choosing “earlier”” - I looked at 4th Brother.
“Surely not. I’m just surprised with your fiery passion for Ye Hua. You can marry whenever you want. I wouldn’t dare to voice an opinion” - he teased.
Ha! Once fine day I’ll tell you the whole story, 4th Brother.
“The marriage of Qing Qiu and the Celestial Tribe is a very important. We can’t be the only willing party” - 2nd Brother said.
“The wedding was brought up by Ye Hua’s mother first so I came home to discuss about it”
“Ah, so it was Consort Le Xu that mention it?” - 2nd Brother sounded pleased. “But..”
“2nd Brother! Look at you!” - 4th Brother interrupted. “They are already engaged anyway. It’s just holding the wedding now. Why do you have so many worries?”
2nd Brother looked at me with a serious face. “What about Mo Yuan?” - he asked.
Why does everyone thinks that I love Shifu? I wondered.
“Once a mentor, a father for life. I do have to inform Shifu about it. However, this marriage was decided by Heavenly Lord and Father. Shifu wouldn’t object to it. Moreover, I don’t think Shifu knows that I’m a girl”
“Naive.. you’re too naive” - 4th Brother shakes his head. “Do you think that Mo Yuan couldn’t see through Zhe Yan’s magic? They are brothers!”
“I always thought that you had Mo Yuan in your mind all these time” - 2nd Brother suddenly said.
“2nd Brother! You mustn't make such a joke! Shifu saved me from my heavenly trial. He also mentored and educated me. He’s as close to me as Father is. However, Ye Hua is the only one on my mind”
“All right. If you say so. Since you clearly know what is it you seek, I won’t hold you back. It’s just that you’ve been engaged for a long time..”
325 years to be exact.
“.. Why are you suddenly in a rush to get the wedding done?” - 2nd Brother asked.
“It is because Ye Hua went to Yingzhou for me and used up his cultivation to make the elixir for Shifu. He doesn’t have much cultivation left. I’m worried that should he one day take the throne of Heavenly Lord, he might not be able to withstand the 81 sacred blazed and 9 holy lightning bolts”
“What has his inheritance to the throne got to do with your wedding?” - 4th Brother asked curiously.
“Since the ancient times, both the Heavenly Lord and Empress have endured the trials together. If I could marry him soon, I could take the trial together with him” - I explained.
“You’re not his wife yet and you’re already so thoughtful of him?” - 4th Brother asked.
2nd Brother held his hand up signalling me not to reply 4th Brother. “All right. I’ll write a letter tomorrow and sent it to our parents” - he promised.
“Thank you, 2nd Brother! Then I’ll get going” - I stand up, wanting to go back to Xiwu Palace as soon as I can.
“Where are you going?” - 4th Brother asked. “This is your Qing Qiu Fox Den”
“Riceball is still young. Ye Hua is constantly busy with work. I have to go back and take care of him” - I told them. I can’t wait to go back.
“Look at her. What a good step mother she is” - 4th Brother quipped.

200 dresses
After reading the ELOD pillow book sequel...
One day, Feng Jiu was surprised to see beautiful and unfamiliar wedding decorations being hung about the holy blue sea. When asking Dong Hua what was going on, he said he was going to hold a wedding reception feast for 200 days to make up for his absence at their official wedding ceremony and their separation for the last two centuries.
Feng Jiu did harbor regrets that she didn’t get to have a real wedding, and that she didn’t even get to wear her beautiful wedding dress! But to host a wedding reception after everyone already knew they were married and so much time had passed already. Isn’t it a bit obnoxious?
(Actually Feng Jiu just didn’t want to tempt fate to ruin another elaborate wedding where she could be humiliated. But Dong Hua doesn’t fear fate so she had to word her excuse carefully)
Feng Jiu: there is no need to make up for it. I forgave you.
Dong Hua: I want to do this
Feng Jiu: I don’t. And since you are doing this for me, shouldn’t my consent be a dealbreaker?
Dong Hua paused, and looked into his wife’s eyes carefully. “Are you sure you don’t want this?”
Feng Jiu gave a show of looking thoughtful, then gave a decisive nod. “I’ll feel silly rather than happy at such an event.”
Dong Hua relented and ordered Chonglin to take down the decorations.
Chonglin mentally sighed that at least the invitations weren’t sent out yet. Though Si Ming’s reputation as the gossip encyclopédia may suffer a hit.
Dong Hua looked at his wife. “Why do you look like you are regretting your decision?”
Feng Jiu: I’m not. I just...what I really regretted was that I didn’t get to wear my wedding dress. That was what I had looked forward to most about our wedding.
Dong Hua's eyes gleamed. “Who says you can’t wear it for our honeymoon?”
And that was how a 201 honeymoon was planned where Feng Jiu modelled her original wedding dress and the ones Dong Hua wove for her every night.
Gun Gun: Brother Chonglin, what is a honeymoon?
Chonglin had learned from Dong Hua about ridiculous and nonsensical replies. “It is when a husband tutors his wife. Right now, your mother is behind in her studies. She needs to catch up.” Actually this was true but Dong Hua had decided to just do his wife’s homework for her so he can get more cuddle time.
Gun Gun nodded in understanding. “Wah. Father is so thoughtful to mother. Actually taking the time to review scriptures.”
Later, when Gun Gun failed his history exam, he wished his father would be more thoughtful about his grades... mother had never failed when father lord was helping her!

Sky Lord’s karma
What should be due karma for the evil sky lord? Judging by how he was present to invite Zhihe to the sky kingdom, I say he managed to escape disgrace following Bai Qian’s memory recall.
To be fair, Ye Hua had died so Bai Qian wasn’t in the mood to get revenge. And since a wedding is supposed to be a happy occasion...bleh...BQ...plz learn your lesson from Xuan Nu and Su Jin. It is not good to delay punishment because they will come back to bother you again.
Well, at least the sky emperor is treating Bai Qian decently.
Still, I want karma.
Maybe after Feng Jiu wakes up from her coma...?
While she prefers living near her aunt, she and Gun Gun both agree that they prefer the carefree lives of Qingqiu. She refuses to allow the dragon clan to babysit Gun Gun.
After all, the sky lord had such harsh standards for his own grandson. And he was so biased about Su Su. Plus, Le Xu raised such a horrible foster daughter in Su Jin. Feng Jiu was terrified at the idea of leaving Gun Gun in their care.
While Dong Hua doesn’t really care about the sky lord, he does want his wife and son to be well taken care of. And who better than her uncle-in-law? It’s a shame his authority can only go so far.
Perhaps it’s time to make sure Ye Hua’s coronation happens sooner rather than later.
Dong Hua asks the sky lord why is he delegating all matters to Ye Hua, who is only a crown prince? Under this scrutiny, the sky lord claims to want to prepare his grandson for his future role.
Dong Hua: and what have you been doing otherwise?
Hmm...throwing parties, feasting, basically stuff retired, rich people can afford to do.
Dong Hua: I only retired when it became clear there was nothing left I was needed to do. Since you yourself have nothing left to do, why not let Ye Hua succeed you now?
Ye Hua was very soon made sky emperor.
But if you think the sky emperor got to live a happy retirement, you are sadly mistaken.
Bai Qian may be too forgiving for her own good, especially towards her in-laws, but Dong Hua is not. Especially when Xiao Bai loves visiting her aunt.
Being shameless, Dong Hua has no qualms about asking Ye Hua if he is fine with his parents raising Ali when they had raised Su Jin, and look how she turned out.
Worried, Ye Hua decides to sentence his parents to mortal trials using the excuse that this would be a good way to cultivate energy since they are kind of weak.
As for the sky lord, Dong Hua wonders how Ye Hua and Bai Qian could be so forgiving of a man who plotted to kill Su Su, and was even willing to let his son marry that witch Su Jin. But after all, Bai Qian did not go after Xuan Nu, and it’s not as if the former ghoul empress ever returned to provoke them.
Ye Hua realizes that it is probably best to make sure his grandfather doesn’t meddle in his personal life again. And he wants to make Bai Qian comfortable in her new home. His parents are out of the way (and will stay that way unless they want a test on whether their personality has improved from their mortal trials). But since his grandfather is retired, Ye Hua asks Dong Hua to help him exile his grandfather to some mountain to help him get away from the pomp and excess of celestial life. In other words, let him be forgotten and under guard. Kind of like how Su Su was treated.
The former emperor certainly felt betrayed by his own precious grandson. What an ungrateful brat. Now he was stuck alone, with some ladies and servants.
But karma was not done. Su Su had been unfairly deemed guilty.
One of the former emperor’s old enemies decided to take advantage of his plight by finally accusing all his previous sins. He was unable to get justice before because the emperor would always deny accusations and see the innocent party punished rather than slander his reputation.
This was actually true, but the old enemy definitely exaggerated the sins committed.
The old emperor was hence officially exiled, despite his pleas, because Bai Qian and Ye Hua of all people know how corrupt he can be. Exile is kind of merciful compared to what Su Jin went through.
Without any status or guards now, the emperor was easy prey for all the parties he offended before.

What if Feng Jiu improved the sword design in public?
cos seriously why wait??? If she can write with a brush, she can use tea as ink!
Using her tail, she circled the flaw.
Dong Hua and Lian Song saw and admitted she was a very smart pet (albeit with faulty taste buds)
Tumblr media
Feng Jiu happily accompanied Dong Hua to pick out the sword materials but she was not happy to see Jiheng upon their return.
She huffily turned her back on the princess.
It went on like this. While Dong Hua still brought Feng Jiu with him everywhere, Feng Jiu’s joy was dampened whenever Jiheng was present. She was especially grumpy Jiheng had to arrive at Dong Hua’s rooms at night.
When Jiheng announced her plan to make a food dish for Feng Jiu, the fox immediately ran inside and hid. She thought of her position as a popular princess, to have sunk so low to a pet.
To stay with them after the marriage was out of the question. Feng Jiu was broken hearted as she made the decision to leave while in isolation.
Seeing Dong Hua care for the snow lion further saddened her. She was replaceable after all...
But she would leave with dignity.
Jiheng and Dong Hua were surprised but pleased when the fox greeted them with cooked yams for breakfast. Jiheng happily accepted this peace offering. Dong Hua approved.
Feng Jiu waited till the wedding day itself to make her disappearance, knowing Dong Hua would be too busy then.
Yeah...even with Cheng Yu and Si Ming trying to help her, it took Xiao Yan’s arrival for Feng Jiu to make her escape.
Needless to say, Dong Hua was very sure Yan Chiwu stole his baby fox.
Feng Jiu didn’t want to hear news about the wedding and so forbade mention of it in her presence.

What happened to Mu Yun once Xiao Jiu committed suicide?
What did I just write?
Anyway, Feng Jiu promised to rescue her.
Well after Feng Jiu returned to Qingqiu, she visited Si Ming and requested his help to give Mu Yun a happy life once she spirited her away from the Song empire.
Just in time too. After the emperor’s death, there would have been no one left who could have saved her.
Feng Jiu insisted that in Mu Yun’s next life, she would be given a chance or push to cultivate her way to immortality.
So either Mu Yun ascends and somehow becomes Feng Jiu’s personal maid again, or she stays in heaven as another new immortal.
Either way, as an immortal, she still has the ability to turn into a butterfly and stir up the winds.
When Zhihe returns for Bai Qian’s wedding, a chill ran down Muyun’s spine.
Looking at the princess’ face, Mu Yun felt an instant dislike for her.
Seeing Feng Jiu kick the mean princess into bird poop, Mu Yun laughed and asked her help in pranking Zhihe.
Realizing how wronged Muyun had been by Zhihe, Feng Jiu agreed. But they must be careful. Zhihe is still under Dong Hua’s protection.
While Zhihe is walking back to Taichen Palace, she passes a pond on her way.
MuYun summons a strong breeze that stirs up tiny stones and leaves. It’s not enough to knock Zhihe over, but Feng Jiu sneakily kicks a pebble at Zhihe’s back.
Splash, the princess fell in.
Enraged, the princess turns around to demand who dared to push her.
She finds herself watching Chengyu pelt Lian Song with pebbles as the prince runs away.
Chengyu was happy to join in the fun. Innocent Lian Song was wondering what he had done to offend Cheng Yu lately.
Zhihe huffs but hurries on home before anyone sees her. But ouch, her back hurt.
Zhihe wanted to let her back recover but Chonglin had already had her bags ready and the carriage summoned to take her away.
Apparently Dong Hua was clear that she should be gone before night fell.
Zhihe miserably changed her clothes before boarding the carriage. And were these seats always so uncomfortable or was it just her aching back?
Muyun sadly could not witness this as she and Ali were busy persuading Zhe Yan to rescue Feng Jiu.

DongFeng in TMOPB AU
What if it was Feng Jiu who was having her mortal trial when she met Dijun?
Feng Jiu had been helping her aunt seal Qingcang and had taken the blow for her too. Her Phoenix feather birthmark became a red dot.
Bai Qian informed her family and they began the search for Feng Jiu.
Dong Hua travels to the mortal realm because Miao Luo is seeking the soul locking jade.
While they fight, the nameless Feng Jiu comes across them and decides to help Dong Hua. She may have lost her memory, but not her interest in swordfighting.
As Miao Luo strikes her, she realizes this mortal has her missing drop of energy.
Tumblr media
Dong Hua helps Feng Jiu vanquish Miao Luo. He wants to take her back to Taichen under his protection, but she enjoys her freedom and was going to part ways.
Dong Hua tricks her by having her care for his wound. He thinks of how to persuade Feng Jiu to leave with him. In the meantime; he orders his staff to clean up his stone palace.
While the staff clean the place up, Dong Hua enjoys being pampered and mothered by Feng Jiu and eats her homemade food.
Dong Hua offers to hire her as his chef.
This catches Feng Jiu’s interest and she accepts.
Dong Hua takes Feng Jiu to Bihai and visits her there regularly. It helps that her food is the best he ever tasted.
The nameless mortal had been used to living alone. Men kept trying to court her, and women were too jealous of her. She couldn’t make friends easily. Hence she adjusts easily to Bihai and befriends the animals there. Although she is confused by how the palace cleans itself.
Feng Jiu offers to teach Dong Hua how to cook. She wasn’t interested in him as a romantic interest but she did enjoy his company.
Dong Hua named her Xiao Hong (little red).
Zhihe was upset Dong Hua no longer hangs around to eat meals with her.
Dong Hua decides to become Feng Jiu’s teacher because she does show interest in swordfighting.
Eventually they play jokes on each other, usually with Dong Hua winning.
Enough time passes that Dong Hua and Feng Jiu unknowingly fall in love with each other.
Feng Jiu is the one who acknowledges her feelings first but does not make the first move. Rather she asks that she be allowed to leave because she needs to be exposed to the world and make more friends.
Dong Hua refuses, claiming it is for her own protection.
Feng Jiu: what am I to you? Your prisoner?
Dong Hua: no. You are my student.
Feng Jiu was saddened by this answer and insisted on leaving.
Dong Hua refuses to take her out, but realizes Feng Jiu needs more friends in her life. But who? Zhihe hates competition so that was a bad idea. He needs someone loyal to him and who can keep a secret. Chonglin? Hmm, why does the thought of a male with Feng Jiu bother him? He needs some time to think.
In the meantime, he sets Feng Jiu a challenge. If she wins, he will take her out.
While watching Xiao Hong practise, Dong Hua realizes his feelings for her because he was contemplating her potential as his queen.
Feng Jiu fails the challenge the first time. Dong Hua said that because she lost, he suggested she marry him. To his delight, Feng Jiu was receptive to the idea.
Dong Hua confesses he is an ancient immortal king and he needs to build Feng Jiu an immortal body. So he sets out a search for the Saha fruit, literally ordering anybody who has one to give it to him or face punishment at his hands. Considering his bloody and legendary feats, people complied. The biyiniao queen said they had one and offered it to the king.
Dong Hua enlists Xie Guchou’s help and secrecy to create the immortal body for Xiao Hong. He will wait for Xiao Hong to die of natural causes before placing her soul into the immortal body.
Dong Hua claims to go to seclusion but really just spends all his time with Xiao Hong.
Xiao Hong asks about his family. Dong Hua claims to have none. She asks if he is embarrassed for her mortal status. He denies it, having no sense of shame. He just doesn’t want to share her. And he also wants to protect her from Miao Luo. Xiao Hong tells him it is not fair that he can wander about but she can’t. Not to mention, wouldn’t she be safer when surrounded by more Guards.
To make her happy, Dong Hua relents and brings her back to Taichen. News spread of Dong Hua’s mortal lover. The Sky lord does nothing. He’s too busy trying to get Ye Hua and Bai Qian to meet, but the queen is busy looking for her missing niece.
Zhihe is instantly livid and jealous but seeing how Dong Hua had placed a constant guard around Xiao Hong, she is forced to hold back her insults.
Zhihe tells off her foster brother for ignoring her, claiming to be worried he will ignore her completely now that Xiao Hong is here. Dong Hua tells her she is ridiculous but relents to include his sister when he spends time with his fiancée.
Dong Hua would rather Feng Jiu spend more time with girls than boys. As a result, Feng Jiu doesn’t get the chance to meet her old friend Si Ming, though she did meet Lian Song briefly.
Zhihe plays on Xiao Hong’s doubts, telling her Dong Hua is only marrying her so Miao Luo can’t get to her. After all, what is a human lifespan to an immortal?
Xiao Hong protests that Dong Hua was planning to give her an immortal body.
Zhihe: if you say so.
Xiao Hong is revealed to be pregnant. Zhihe poisons her tea and causes Xiao Hong to have a miscarriage, breaking her heart. The poison also nearly kills a Xiao Hong but Dong Hua manages to save her.
Dong Hua suspects foul play. Zhihe’s maid takes all the blame. Zhihe pleads on her behalf but Dong Hua punishes her to be tortured to death, reborn as an animal and never return, facing hardships for every lifetime.
Zhihe is also sent away to her teacher’s.
Things take a turn for the worse when Dong Hua announces his marriage to Jiheng for the sake of the realms. While Dong Hua assures her the wedding is false, Feng Jiu can not help but feel jealous he is spending time with Jiheng at night for the charade.
Was he also playing a charade with her?
The wedding falls through because of the runaway bride. Zhihe has also been exiled for her role.
Dong Hua returns to cherishing Xiao Hong, but she can’t help doubting his affections.
It doesn’t help that Dong Hua insists on keeping her hidden away (he gets jealous of the curious male immortals) when she wants to go out. Was this always to be her future? Being a guarded treasure?
Dong Hua notices Xiao Hong’s depression but cannot think of a solution right away. But what to do? The immortals can’t accept her until she becomes immortal herself. So she has few friends. And there was no way he was introducing men to her.
In her exile, Zhihe plots to remove Xiao Hong permanently so she cannot reincarnate. She begs to be allowed to visit and make amends with her future sister in law.
While Dong Hua was busy, Zhihe invites Xiao Hong to the punishment platform. Zhihe took care to drug the guards’ tea so they have to use the restroom or fall asleep.
Once there, Zhihe pushes Xiao Hong over.
The Guards arrive in time to see the action. Zhihe claims Xiao Hong accidentally fell over.
Except why the heck would Zhihe even bring Xiao Hong there in the first place?
Dong Hua holds a trial and furiously removes Zhihe’s immortality, never to be accepted as an immortal again nor will heaven ever give her mortal incarnations any aid. She would have faced a painful death had it not been for his debt to her parents. He also punished the Guards by exiling them.
Dong Hua contemplates suicide but Lian Song reminds him of his oath to keep Miao Luo imprisoned, and his debt of honor to Meng Hao.
Dong Hua becomes a miserable recluse. Going out only for these 2 things. He spends most of his time at Bihai, to the point that even Chonglin moves over there. To everybody else, he seems the same. But to those closest to him, they see how sad he behaves.
Meanwhile Xiao Hong returns to her immortal self. She reunited with her family as a high goddess. However, having had a taste of celestial life, she decides she wants no part of it and decides to forget the love she feels for Dong Hua.
Bai Qian and Ye Hua’s wedding is eventually arranged. Lian Song persuadés Dong Hua to go out for some fresh air and just escort the bride to heaven.
In Qingqiu, Dong Hua meets Feng Jiu. Curious by her appearance and the fact that she does not recognise him; Dong Hua investigates and confirms that she is his missing fiancée. He asks Bai Yi for her hand but Bai Yi informed Dong Hua that ever since her love trial, Feng Jiu has been determined she will not marry into the celestial tribe.
Dong Hua: I don’t have to stay at Taichen Palace. My residence is now at Bihai Cangling.
Bai Yi: she also wants someone who can give her freedom...
Dong Hua: I won’t force her to do anything she doesn’t want to.
Now that Feng Jiu was a high goddess, she could definitely protect herself.
Bai Yi gives Dong Hua permission to court his daughter. Dong Hua easily handles Feng Jiu’s pranks. He even has the star factor to aid him as Feng Jiu had been an admirer of the war hero.
Things happen as before. He teaches her to fight. She teaches him to cook. They prank each other.
The wedding is set.
But an old loyal servant of Zhihe decides to tell Feng Jiu the story of Xiao Hong.
Feng Jiu wonders if she is a substitute. Is that why he calls her Xiao Bai? She confronts Dong Hua, who admits they are the same person. Feng Jiu asks why he treats her differently now. (See explanation above)
Dong Hua asks how he can prove his love for her.
Cue heart ring condition.
Dong Hua presents Feng Jiu with the ring for their wedding.
Jiheng was devastated by the news, but it’s not like Dong Hua actually talked to her. He visited her for one day then left every decade, eager to be alone again in his depression.
Bonus: I briefly thought about Zhihe returning using the immortal body Dong Hua had prepared for Xiao Hong, but her servants wouldn’t be able to find her in the mortal realm without sufficient knowledge.

The employee
Tumblr media
After seeing Feng Jiu worry about how Qingti is adjusting, Dong Hua can’t help but wonder what their relationship had been. He knows Feng Jiu went to the mortal realm for his sake, and had somehow caused the death of Qingti by her interference. She had then mourned him for all this time...gave up half her cultivation...
What was their relationship like?
Dong Hua demanded Si Ming give him the real scroll for his mortal trial.
As Dong Hua reads through it, his mortal memories begin to resurface, along with a mistrust of Qingti.
Oh, he still trusts Feng Jiu, after all she had done to be with him as a pet, and literally taking a dagger to her heart after she ran away from their wedding, he knows why she committed ‘suicide’, and it wasn’t because of Qingti!
Ok, so maybe Dong Hua is feeling a little insecure. He can still hear Feng Jiu crying out for Qingti before the tomb collapsed.
He reminds himself that Feng Jiu chose to marry him, she did everything for him, she only liked Qingti as a friend...
But Qingti liked Feng Jiu, had dared to steal her from his sworn brother and emperor in the most disrespectful way...yeah, he saved the emperor several times too. Why else would he still be alive right now, and not impaled with the Canghe blade?
Qingti’s memory may have been fuzzy, but he behaves so casually in front of Dong Hua’s empress.
Currently Dong Hua watched Qingti place a hand on Feng Jiu’s hair, pointing out a knot.
That’s it! Qingti has to go.
It was a simple matter, Dong Hua merely gave Siming a new employee. Considering how Siming lied to Dong Hua before; he accepted this with good nature and claimed he was lacking help to Feng Jiu.
Meanwhile, Dong Hua set about cuddling with his empress. He wanted her to be intimate with him only.
Feng Jiu: you need to learn tolerance.
Dong Hua: I disagree.

Celestial kitchen nightmare
I love watching Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmare. And I can’t help imagining him in the ELOD scenario when Feng Jiu leaves Dong Hua. I claim this as a draft
Tumblr media
Backstory: Feng Jiu wanted to own a restaurant because she loved cooking, and honestly, her food is heavenly.
Dong Hua bought her the restaurant as an early wedding present, already staffed and paid by him.
Unfortunately, on the eve of the wedding, Jiheng threatens to commit suicide and forces Dong Hua to come see her. Jiheng is ready to shoot herself, but Dong Hua easily disarms her and ends up shot near his heart. Chonglin rushes him to the hospital.
Sadly, the area Jiheng chose to commit suicide had no reception.
Dong Hua survives and decides to send Jiheng back to her estranged brother, making sure to get a restraining order. Xiao Yan escorts Jiheng while Dong Hua recuperates in the hospital, where they were having trouble with their communications.
Xu Yang wasn’t keen on taking his sister back, but Dong Hua bribed him with a lucrative business deal. Xu Yang agreed you keep his sister within their residence boundaries.
Chonglin had been sent to inform Feng Jiu of what had happened. He got stuck in traffic, and his car broke down...
Feng Jiu left because of Dong Hua’s silence and has gone into hiding.
After Dong Hua fully recovered, he immediately started searching for Feng Jiu, leaving the restaurant in Chonglin’s hands.
Sadly...nobody knows what they are doing. Chonglin is capable but he can’t run a restaurant. He’s a personal assistant/staff manager, not a restaurant manager! He doesn’t have the heart for it. He tries his best to fulfill his orders but fails.
The failing business doesn’t really matter much to Dong Hua. He’s a retired billionnaire and still makes money from stocks and stakes in business. What bothers him is the ruined reputation. How can he give Xiao Bai this restaurant now?
Eventually, Gordon Ramsay is asked to help their failing business.
Gordon points out what they are doing wrong and goes to Chonglin to ask why he is even here.
Chonglin explains that this restaurant was born because of Feng Jiu, and she was the one meant to run it. But she vanished and can’t be found by their billionaire boss.
Dong Hua wanted to give Feng Jiu a successful restaurant when he found her, so he comes from time to time to check on things. Dong Hua does not look into the kitchen at all.
Chonglin says that is the best for everyone because Dong Hua cannot cook...at all.
Gordon decides that the best way to help this restaurant is by returning the heart and soul into it.
Gordon: quick question, does Mrs Bai know me?
Chonglin: oh yeah, she’s a huge fan.
Gordon: just checking...
Gordon hosts an online contest where the winner will receive the chance to work as his apprentice.
Feng Jiu is currently looking after Gun Gun while working temp jobs as she keeps them moving. She sees the contest and decides to try out.
She wins.
Gordon arranges for Dong Hua and Feng Jiu to meet. Before Feng Jiu can bail, Gordon explains the situation to her.
The reunion is very teary.
Gordon does teach Feng Jiu her new restaurant menu, and is pleased to see her own innovative dishes.
On relaunch night, there is a surprise for all, Feng Jiu introduces Gun Gun.
Bonus scene: Gordon dares to try Dong Hua’s sweet and sour fish, and the roasted potatoes. While the potatoes are edible and could use seasoning, Gordon chokes on the thick fish sauce. When he regains consciousness, he recommends Dong Hua leaves the cooking to Feng Jiu.

Jewelry
Feng Jiu treasures her wedding ring and Qingti’s bracelets because they are meaningful, unlike the many jewellery she receives as Dong Hua’s Wife.
For Mother’s Day, Gun Gun gives his Mother a beautiful necklace he made himself. It took him a lot of hard work and research but he wanted to impress his Mother because she had so many jewels already.
Feng Jiu is pleased and assures Gun Gun this is easily her favourite necklace because he made it for her.
She shows Gun Gun her prized jewellery box, separate from the rest of her extensive jewellery. Inside are a few pieces of jewellery she values above all the rest she owns.
1. a hairpin Bai Qian gave her that also functions as a hidden dagger
2. Qing Ti’s bracelet since he wasn’t rich but still spent money on her
3. Earrings from Cheng Yu, her best friend
4. A brooch Ali spent most of his allowance on because Feng Jiu had been unhappy.
5. And now Gun Gun’s homemade necklace
Gun Gun points out that there is nothing from Father inside. Feng Jiu explains she is wearing it right now.
Gun Gun is happy his item is part of this set.
Unbeknownst to them, Dong Hua had entered the room looking for his Wife and had heard her list the jewellery she values most.
Dong Hua gets jealous of Qing Ti and his own Son and plots to remove the competition.
Thankfully, Dong Hua is actually skilled at making jewellery since it involves metalwork and sometimes clay.
While Feng Jiu happily receives them, they don’t go to the jewellery box. Seriously, why is Dong Hua suddenly giving her more intricate and elaborate jewellery?
Feng Jiu explains to Dong Hua that she likes simpler pieces.
One day the box goes missing and Feng Jiu is upset. She orders the servants to look for it.
In the end, Qing Ti persuades her to stop the search. The box may have been sentimental but he is pretty sure the givers were over it.
Cheng Yu hears the news and suspects Dong Hua has stolen the box.
She sighs, “Feng Jiu, Feng Jiu, you had to find yourself a jealous Husband. Oh well, more shopping for us then!”
They end up shopping in Qingqiu.
Lian Song: don’t you think you went overboard taking her jewellery case?
Dong Hua: don’t accuse the innocent. I merely promised to do Ali’s homework if he would hide the case for me.
