Today’s recent commander sleeper is less friendly on the budget than most other highlighted cards, but it’s still under $2 at time of writing (and even cheaper over here in Europe). People might skip over it because of its Standard play, which often makes commander players consider a card to not be for their format, but this one is.
You know what generic tutors needed? More flexibility! While nowhere near the power of a cheap tutor like Demonic or Vampiric, I often find myself avoiding those anyway, and not just for the price, just because I like having some variance. However, one or two tutors that have other uses are fine in my book, and this is a good one.
The real power in this card is in the Read Ahead ability, making it a modal tutor/reanimation spell. For five mana, you get either a tutor and a reanimation from any graveyard, or just a reanimation in a pinch. The first mode isn’t that useful in commander, however if you don’t fear enchantment removal it can be used to delay your tutor to the same turn you’ll use the tutored card, which might be hard with five mana invested in this.
Neither mode is particularly efficient for commander that has access to animate dead and cheap tutors, but the versatility and often getting both across two turns makes this an option you should consider for your black decks.
Also I have Saga and they have great art.

Re the person asking for a keyword meaning ""this object is all colors". While it's not a keyword, 3 cards like that exist. Transguild Courier from Dissension, Sphinx of the Guildpact from Ravnica Allegiance and Fallaji Wayfarer from the Painbow Dominaria United Commander deck.
FYI

Cornwall's Random Card of the Day #856: Shivan Reef
Tumblr media
Shivan Reef is a rare from Apocalypse, seen here in its Dominaria United printing.
Shiv was home of Jhoira, who, along with her husband Teferi, phased it and Zhalfir out during the first Phyrexian invasion, as a big "fuck you" to Urza. Eventually, Shiv, phased back in, though to do so without destroying the multiverse, Teferi had to sacrifice his spark. Also Zhalfir was left phased out forever. Of course, both those things have since been undone, so I guess never mind that part.
The Mana Rig is a giant invention by the Thrans to siphon mana out of Shiv to be turned into powerstones. Once they died, the native viashino and the goblins they had used as slaves continued to maintain it, not knowing it's real purpose, but keeping it in working order. Which was great news for Urza, when he showed up and commandeered it! I'm not sure of its fate now, I'm afraid.

Finally got around to reading chapter 4 of New Benalia's Light, and wanted to say congrats on finishing it (and also for writing 36 thousand words in a month, god damn).
I'm glad you decided to continue it after the first chapter, as it was an excellent insight into the invasion from the ground level and really sold me on Danitha as a character (newish Magic fan, and Dominaria United was my first taste of Dominaria). In particular, I really enjoyed seeing how the trauma of losing her father along with the weight of the expectations placed upon her impacted her.
All in all, great work!
🥺🥺🥺 This was such a moving note to wake up to!! Thank you, thank you thank you—your support from the first chapter onward has meant so much (and it’s been so much fun to work through Augur of Agonies, too)!
That trauma was the kernel of this story. I’d loved Danitha ever since the second or third Magic game I played (Danitha Capashen, Paragon was essential in my Knight typal Commander deck), essentially just because of her stained glass sword and armor. It awakened something in me, something that said this is Good. So when her main appearance in Dominaria United’s story hinged on killing her father, woof, I was extra sold—and THEN, seeing her new Selesyna appearance in her MOM: Aftermath card convinced me that I just had to. I love that this whole exploration of faith, trauma, legacy, and expectations all came about because I saw this awesome lady with a cool sword on a tiny little piece of cardboard—but I’m glad it did.
Needless to say, after said 36,000 word/month output, I’ll probably be moving to shorter chapters in my next project, whatever it might be!

I buy the line that Mark Rosewater wanted acorn instead of silver border because he got tired of telling people they couldn't play silver border in sanctioned events. As a creator it makes sense that would frustrate him, that there's an audience that very clearly wants to play these cards but feels like they cant. I think that makes a lot of sense. I wish they'd been a little more conservative with it (did stickers really have to be Eternal legal?), but my point is I believe the decision to switch to acorn came from a sincere place.
What's unfortunate is that it comes in the midst of this deluge of product that has personally worn down a lot of my goodwill. The Warhammer commander decks look interesting and well made, but these are the most expensive commander precons we've ever gotten. Jumpstart: Dominaria was a dud product, so now we might not ever get another Jumpstart again because that's how market research works. Dominaria Remastered seems cool, but Timespiral Remastered was already too expensive for me to really participate in. Same with the Double Masters sets. We did a draft for Double Masters 2022 for my birthday but it was 60 bucks for the buy in and very much an indulgence.
And now with the Alpha proxies being $1000 for 60 cards I really do have to wonder.... where is the product for me? It feels like maybe that should be Dominaria United, but the truth is I just bought a couple of singles I wanted for Cube and called it good, because we already spent too much on Magic this year. Maybe it could have been Unfinity, but it feels like a set with so much random baggage attached. I would rather they take all of the lottery cards out of the set, make it silver border, and price the thing dirt cheap so I can get in as many games as I want. But that's not what happened so... I guess I just wont be playing with these cards at all.

Today’s recent budget commander sleeper is one that made a bit of noise on release with the latest set precons, but ended up drowned in the constant noise of magic these days.
Ramp is good in commander. That’s not news. And it’s hard to come by in white, at least cheaply. Knight of the White Orchid is still the gold standard of white (catch up) ramp, able to fetch nonbasics, and coming on a solid body on turn 2, it’s a white Rampant Growth that sometimes doesn’t work.
This is similar. It’s a turn slower, because it has a tap ability, the land enters tapped and the body it’ll leave behind will end up being a 1/1. However, that’s where the downsides end and the upsides start. Just like Knight of the White Orchid, it can fetch nonbasic Plains, which is even important on a budget nowadays with the two cycles of common typed duals in Kaldheim and Dominaria United.
Scholar of New Horizons also works even if you’re not behind. Granted, it only tutors to hand and doesn’t ramp you then, but hitting every land drop is oftentimes more important than ramping, since you don’t have to spend resources on it. It can also be used cheekily with this with the cycling typed duals (and triomes) to draw a different card. Oh, and the ability can be activated at instant speed which most of the time won’t matter, but will be very appreciated when it comes up that you’re going first and an opponent ramped on turn 3 and suddenly unlocks your own ramp instead of the land draw you’d resigned yourself to.
Beyond that, Scholar, by itself, can be used multiple times for no extra cost, as long as you have counters in your deck, which most decks do, even if incidentally. Have a cathar’s crusade? A Felidar retreat? A luminarch ascension? You’ll have a plentiful supply of counters to feed this turn after turn then, and those are just for mono-white.
In some cases, removing counters might even be an upside, if you expect -1/-1 counters, or, much more importantly, have any saga in your deck. Having the scholar out with the saga allow you to not only keep ramping or making your land drops and keep the saga forever, it also allows you to repeat any chapter from that saga every turn, even the last one should you so wish. It gets absurd with many of them, from Urza’s Saga tutoring every turn and sticking around to the Cruelty of Gix being a free tutor or reanimation every turn. With a Luminous Broodmoth, it’ll make any creature be able to die every single turn and come back.
Don’t get me wrong, this card doesn’t NEED synergies to be good. I’d play it in any white deck as ramp even if no other card in the deck ever had counters, right behind Knight of the White Orchid and in front of Loyal Warhound. On a budget or not. But it does much more than it would in a vacuum, and basically any deck will have some tools to synergize with it. It might actively up the number of incidental sagas I include in white decks just by existing. (But I’m mostly looking for an excuse, I love sagas.)
The card currently retails for under $1 (with the extended art version where you can read the name and artist for half of that), and I’d encourage you to snag one as soon as you find the occasion, in case this doesn’t get reprinted. It’s just staple-level good, much more than any other card that has been featured on here so far.

It's been a while now, but I really appreciated the Legends Retold box toppers in Dominaria United; bringing old underpowered legends back up to speed with current Commander design conventions. So high fives for that. Can we expect more or less of this design approach down the line? I'd love to see something like Thriss, Nantuko Primus get a glow-up for example.
If we did it again, what batch of legendary creatures would you like us to focus on?
