The part that really breaks my heart in Avatar the way of water is when Jake called Lo’ak Neteyam after he saved Jake from drowning.

“Neteyam?”

“No, dad it’s me Lo’ak.”

And then he tries to apologize for his brothers death.

Like Can you imagine Your dad calling you your dead brother’s name (who’s death your dad blames you for) after you just saved his life.

y’all ever think about how small ten looks without his jacket on that roof with donna? like.

idk i guess what sticks with me is that it’s the ONLY time (so far in nuwho) that we see the doctor take off his suit jacket. like yeah he goes places without his coat, but we NEVER see him without his suit jacket. its basically his armor.

and then, for this woman he barely knows, who yelled at him and insulted him and slapped him, because she’s shivering on the edge of a roof and disappointed about missing her wedding, he just. gives her his jacket. doesn’t even stop to think about it, he’s unbuttoning it before donna even sits down fully.

AND THEN. AND THEN. he didn’t even take the sonic out of it first. and like the doctor is the doctor no matter what tool he uses, but the sonic is one of his BEST tools, one he never goes anywhere without. and he just. gives up his jacket with the sonic in it again to this woman he hardly knows.

and like yeah, it’s RIGHT there. he can just reach over and grab it, but idk that says a lot to me about ten, especially when he JUST lost rose and has been thrust into saving donna.

idk i’m probably reading way too much into it, but i’m mentally ill and i can’t stop thinking about him looking so small and vulnerable on that roof next to donna. he gave up his armor, his tool, for a some essential stranger who needed his help.

EARLY DAZE...

This is how I looked and dressed (and felt), as a teenage "girl" growing up as an assumed teenage "boy" in the mid-70's during my middle and high school days... wearing a slightly oversized tee-shirt, cut-off jeans (and yes, cut off this short - it was the fashion for both boys and girls back then...), even the Chucks... My hair wasn't this long, though, as Dad was, after all, retired Navy, and I can't count the number of times he said, "No son of mine's gonna have long hippie hair..." as he marched my brother and me to barber shop in town...

By the time I was in my early "tweens," I knew I was not like the guys I went to school with or hung out with in my neighborhood... and I felt this way all the time, even as I shared a room with my younger brother - which I did shortly after he was born all the way through to graduation and going off to college...

My pre-teen years - pre-school through grammar school, I'd always preferred the company of girls, long before guys "discovered" girls and began preferring their company for the obvious, different reasons...

My best friends were Jill, across the street, Diane on the corner two doors down to the right, and Janie, on the corner, two doors to the left.

We played together, with the boys in the neighborhood of course, but also just us - with their Barbies and baby-dolls and doll houses and play-kitchens... and as far as I could tell, none of us thought anything about it... We were "always" at each other's houses... but I felt "guilty" not having the same kinds of toys to share with them when they were at my house, though we did color and play boardgames and do puzzles - and watch TV, of course...

I didn't give any thought to how we might be "different" - other than their haircuts and clothes... and I recognized that sometimes I found myself wanting to wear the dresses and knee socks they wore... but also knew I couldn't it bring up to my parents... (as a side note, being in the Cub Scouts in those days allowed me to wear knee socks... which was - almost - everything I'd imagined)...

Things didn't become confusing until we moved to a small town in another state just before I went into the sixth grade - and as I was moving into puberty... as the new kid, I had to wrestle with being the new kid, especially among kids who were already discovering adolescent sexual expression and feelings...

Ok, this is mostly bc I realized we've only seen Sally being passive, but how is she able to hypothetically rip apart larger puppets limb from limb? (if the captions with Howdy hold water with other puppets)

they absolutely hold So Much water! it's a combination of a couple things!

a) Nightlight!Sally is really Strong. i'd liken to her to a chimp, as much as i hate them. despite being smaller than people, they're absurdly powerful. when it comes to Her, this comes from a mix of hysterical strength and something Else i've been pondering but don't want to solidify yet, so shh dont worry bout it. it's also much easier to tear fleece & cotton/stuffing than, uh, Biological materials.

b) none of the puppets are really prepared for violence? they've lived in an idyllic world where true, visceral violence likely hasn't even been a Thought in anyone's minds. like, you watch videos of people get attacked by like... raccoons or rats and they visibly Lose because they panic! they aren't prepared! they don't wanna fight! so the much smaller creature wins. They Don't Know How To Fight, Or Fight Back.

b.1) also, Nightlight!Sally is still... Sally. she's still their dear friend. i know that if a close friend attacked me, i'm not sure i'd be able to bring myself to do much other than defend/flee. i wouldn't wanna hurt them even if it meant protecting myself. hence why Wally avoids all confrontation with her & can't protect his friends from her. he can't hurt his neighbor.

b.2) there's also the shock factor. imagine you wake up from a pleasant dream to an absolute nightmare reality. Boom, automatically thrown way off your rhythm. then one of your close buddies looks Fuckin Weird, Are You Okay? and other crazy shit is happening! you're freaking out!! then your Close Friend Who's Off is suddenly slashing at you and BOOM, your arm's gone & your entire brain is scrambled from shock and fear and "?!?!?!?!?!". plus, i doubt the puppets know they're full of stuffing. seeing yourself sliced open and white fluff spilling out has gotta be just. so Unpleasant on principle.

her fighting method is attack wildly until the threat stops making noise! it's very hard to defend oneself from it! imagine those cartoon bits where a cat attacks someone and its just a Flurry of Unbeatable Violence
